Mariners Down Spartans in Shore Conference Tournament By Michael Rogers The Ocean boys basketball team has a 14 win and 9 loss record this season and have some impressive wins along the way, but in facing Toms River North, who has a 20 win and 2 loss record and are ranked number 5 in the Shore Conference, the task was just too much to overcome. Ocean fought hard all game and never gave up but came up just short losing to the Mustangs by the score of 47 to 36. The Mariners have now won eleven games in a row and their last loss was over a month ago. Toms River North got off to a fast start and led 15 to 6 at the end of the first quarter playing great defense. Ocean got back in the game outscoring the Mariners in the second quarter and cutting the lead

Flaherty and Maybrey Look To Lead Point Beach To An NJSIAA Title By Eric Braun

POINT PLEASANT - The duo of Katelyn Flaherty and Marina Maybrey have Point Pleasant Beach sitting at 20-1 and a number one seed heading into the Central Jersey Group I NJSIAA Tournament.

Maybrey transferred to Point Pleasant Beach over the summer. After a back and forth battle over their eligibility, the pair were granted their playing time and since then the Gulls have not looked back.

For Ocean, Alex Cirlincione led the way in scoring for the Spartans with 14 points while Royal Moore added 9 points. Harry Matrazzo and Eric Musto each added 6 points. Toms River North will now move on to face Colts Neck in the next round of the Shore Conference Tournament.

Brick Avenges Loss to Win State Title By Ted Kaiser

BRICK TOWNSHIP— The goal was clear since the beginning of the season for the Brick Township wrestling team. With seven district medal winners returning from last season’s squad, the Green Dragons believed they could not only get back to the state sectional final, but win it. When the Central Jersey Group III tournament played out this past week, Brick realized they would face a familiar foe in the final in Ocean Township. The Spartans defeated them last year for the crown.

“We set a goal at the beginning of the year to win here at the end,” explains head coach Matt Opacity. The Green Dragons took advantage of the opportunity and avenged last season’s defeat at the hands of Ocean. Dan Wojtasek came up with a critical pin in the 170 lb. weight class as Brick came away with a 42-23 victory for the sectional championship. Wojtasek is 24-3 on the season and doing some of his best work down the stretch this year. The Spartans got out to a strong start, but Dan Rackliffe and Conor Mulligan earned pins in the 106 lb. and 113 lb. weight class to get the Dragons on track. Brick will move on in the Group III tournament where they could do some damage. The team has depth and talent and was hardened by the difficult schedule in the Shore Conference this season. The Green Dragons finished fourth in the Class A South Division, which gives an indication of how tough the competition was.

SCT Boys’ Semifinals are Set By Ted Kaiser LINCROFT— The Shore Conference Tournament boys’ semifinals are set. Top seeded Lakewood will meet 5th seed Toms River North on Wednesday at 7:45pm and 2nd seed Point Beach will face 3rd seed Manasquan at 6:00pm. The SCT boys’ final will take place on Saturday, February 23rd at 3:00pm at Monmouth University. In the quarterfinals last Saturday, Lakewood advanced with a solid win over Matawan 5742. ST JOHN VIANNEY SKATES TO SIXTEENTH WIN, ADVANCES TO SECOND ROUND OF HANDCHEN CUP By Mike Ready

HOLMDEL – Saint John Vianney (SJV) knew that No.1 seed Rumson Fair Haven Regional had been upset by No.8 seed Manalapan earlier in the day when they took to the ice Wednesday night. “We certainly didn’t want to be the second dragon slayed in the same day,” said fourth-year head coach Steve Scanapicco. Fortunately for Scanapicco and his team, that didn’t happen, as the Lancers (16-1-3) skated past No.7 seed Howell (11-13) 3-0 Wednesday night at the Jersey Shore Arena. SJV, ranked No.9 in the state and No.2

in the Shore, had their work cut-out for them. Scanapicco noted, “Howell worked extraordinarily hard, right up to the very end. They didn’t give us a whole lot of space to play, so we were forced to take shots from the exterior. We really didn’t get a whole lot of slot activity, they did a great job keeping us on the outside preventing us from getting quality stuff in the middle. Head coach, Billy Daley (Howell), had them charged up to play.” After a scoreless first period, sophomore center, Matt Kidney, scored on a power-play goal with 5:12 remaining in the second period to put the Lancers on top 1-0. The goal was Kidney’s 18th of the year, placing him second on the team with 32 points. Junior defensemen, Drew Fisher (2 goals, 16 assists, and 18pts.), and Tim Gelatt (5 goals, 16 assists, 21 pts.) assisted on the play. With the score still 1-0 with 9:36 left in the game, sophomore newcomer, Sam Zietara, scored his first career varsity goal, to give SJV a game-changing two-goal lead. Zietara slammed the puck home on a feed from behind the net. He was sitting right in the slot waiting for it when senior, Michael Davie (14 goals, 16 assists, 30 pts.), found him all alone.

COLTS NECK ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS IN SHORE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT By Mike Ready

COLTS NECK – No.4 seed Colts Neck (18-3, 12-1) turned a close game into a rout Thursday night, with 64-45 second round SCT victory over No.13 seed Southern Regional (13-9, 9-5) at Colts Neck. Senior, Brandon Federici, third in the Shore Conference in scoring with a 21.6 per game average, was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points. He also grabbed a team high eight rebounds.

Federici was more impressed with his team’s defense. “Our momentum came from our defense today, we were able to adapt to what the game was giving us. Our full-court press created turnovers and fast-break baskets, Sobieski (James) got the dunk.” Colts Neck’s game plan was to apply man-to-man full-court pressure from the start, and eventually wear Southern down; it worked. Head coach, Lou Piccola, explained, “We decided to press them as soon as they got off the bus; our plan was to wear them down. We made it as difficult as possible for them to get the ball to Gesicki, and to contain penetration. By the end of the game, they were tired; we held them to five points in the fourth quarter. Our fullcourt pressure turned the game around in the fourth.” It was an eight -point game at the half, 30-22, with neither team being able to put the ball in the hoop with any consistency. Federici had nine first-half points, senior, Tim Vangelas, added six, while sophomore, Chris O’Reilly, had five.

Southern cut the lead to five points, 3126 at the start of the second half, but back-to-back three-pointers by Vangelas and Federici put the Cougars back up by eleven.

Vangelas added eight third-quarter points, including two three-pointers. Vangelas added, “We had a couple days off, so we were ready to run. Our game plan was to press full court; we stuck to it and it worked.” In the fourth quarter, Colts Neck was relentless with its press and Southern was finished. Southern had one basket in the first seven and a half minutes of the quarter, while the Cougars reeled off 14 points, for a 62-43 advantage. The two teams traded baskets in the final seconds for the 64-45 final. Senior, Lucas Lulima, did all his scoring in the fourth quarter, putting up five points. Lulima had a fine all-around game, dishing out a game-high six assists, hauling in four rebounds and adding two steals. Piccola was impressed, “Luke’s (Lalima) the one who does all the little things, you just appreciate everything he does, he’s relentless. By Kevin Davis BRICK TOWNSHIP-- Brick Memorial Wrestling defeated East Brunswick 5811 on February 13 to earn the right to defend their title in the Central Jersey Group 4 final that they won a year ago at Jackson Memorial. This year, they advanced to meet Howell, who the Mustangs beat 30-28 in last year’s semifinal. They improved upon that margin this year with a 34-19 win to repeat as sectional champions. This year’s semifinal was a significant departure from the semifinal nailbiter. The Mustangs earned six points each from pins scored by senior, Matt Moore, at 220, junior, Tyler Poling, at heavyweight, freshman, Luke Vescovi, at 106 (in 11 seconds), and senior, Connor Maliff, at 113. Technical falls were awarded to sophomore, Cliff

Ruggiero, at 152, senior, Tyler Richardson, at 170 and junior, Joseph Ghione, at 120, while sophomore, Rob Ruggiero, earned a major decision at 145. Sophomore, Connor Owen (182), junior, Nicholas Costa (195), and senior, Jared Staub, added decision victories for Brick, while sophomore, Jose Bocalman, was awarded a forfeit victory at 126.

Eagles Earn 20th Win and Trip to SCT Semis By Jim Hintelmann LINCROFT - It was a game worthy of a final, but fourth-seeded Middletown South finally outlasted fifth-seeded Rumson-Fair Haven Regional, 51-50, in an overtime thriller to gain the semifinals of the Shore Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday at Brookdale.

Coming into the game, South (20-2), wanted to prove a point and proceeded to do it after a hard struggle with the Lady Bulldogs.

"We've had good teams," said South coach Tom Brennan, "but traditionally, it always seems to be RBC, St. John Vianney, Rumson and Point Boro, but we proved that we belonged there also." The final seconds in overtime proved to be a wild affair in which Rumson almost completed a stunning comeback.

Two free throws by South's Jackie Dluhi with 20 seconds remaining in the overtime gave the Eagles what appeared to be a safe 51-46 lead, but Rumson freshman, Nicole Morris, hit a trey from the right corner with nine seconds left to make it a two point game. South turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass, giving Rumson a chance for a tie. Grace Stant was fouled on a drive to the basket. She missed her first attempt, but made the second to cut the lead to 51-50 with six seconds left.

South's Kieran Gannon was fouled on the inbounds pass, but missed the first of a one and one, giving Rumson one more chance. However, the Lady Bulldogs had no time outs remaining and a desperation shot missed at the buzzer.

"What hurt us was that we turned the ball over in the final seconds of both the second and third quarters and South scored both times," he said.

Rumson grabbed a 41-37 lead with four minutes remaining in regulation time on three-pointers by Emma Miller and Hope LoPresti, but it went scoreless the rest of the way and South finally tied it on baskets by Olivia Liskowitz and Bluhi, setting up the wild overtime. Rumson raced out to a 10-3 lead with seven straight points, five of them by Hannah Miller, but South went on a 13-0 run to grab an 18-11 lead as Bluhi and Brianna Gray scored six and five points, respectively. Rumson rallied and finally regained the lead at 33-31 on LoPresti's trey. There were several more lead changes until the thrilling finish, "It was a great ball game and it was a shame that someone had to lose," said Rumson coach, George Sourlis.

Lady Hornets Move On in SCT By Michael Rogers The Holmdel girls basketball team is the number six seed in the Shore Conference Tournament and with a 15 win and 7 loss record this season the Hornets defeated Marlboro (15 win and 7 loss record and the #11 seed) in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament by the score of 60 to 38. The Hornets will move on to play Point Boro in the next round of the Shore Conference Tournament. Point Boro is the #3 seed. The Hornets had a balanced offensive attack on offense as Tara Inman scored 17 points, Morgan Graziano scored 16 points, and Tori Cardeaci added 10 points. Holmdel also did a great job on defense as they held the Mustangs to 16 second half points while leading by only 5 points at halftime (27 to 22) before taking over the game in the second half and winning by 22 points. Part of that great defense was Holmdel's rebounding and steals as Inman grabbed 7 rebounds and had six steals. Cardaci also had 6 steals and added 7 assists. Fontana also grabbed 7 rebounds and she led a key 11 to 6 run in the third quarter giving the Hornets a 10-point lead. In the fourth quarter, it was Graziano who finished off Marlboro by scoring 12 points in the quarter for the win.

By Kevin Davis LAKEWOOD-- Top-seeded Lakewood (19-1) survived a scare in the second round of the Shore Conference Tournament, rallying from a four-point halftime deficit to overtake No. 17 Middletown North (12-11), 60-44 on February 14. The win set up a quarterfinal meeting with upset-minded Matawan on February 17. Despite the gap between seeds and difference in records between the two teams, the Lions more than held their own in a low-scoring first half that saw the teams join forces to put 34 points on the board. Middletown North rode its first half momentum into the beginning minutes of the second half and saw its lead grow to nine points before the Piners exploded for a 12-0 run to

end the third quarter and gave them a 34-31 lead. Lakewood took control from there, outscoring the Lions 26-13 in the final quarter to beat back the upset attempt. Tyrice Beverette was Lakewood’s top scorer in the win with 16 points.

“(Middletown North has) tremendous shooters and in the first half they gave us a run for our money,” Lakewood coach, Randy Holmes, said after the game. “In the second half, we imposed our will.”

MANASQUAN— Parity has reigned in the Shore Conference this season, so it is not surprising that the Shore Conference Tournament is looking like one of the more wide open tournaments in years. Manasquan has been considered one of the top teams all season, but met some stiff competition while battling to a 17-2 regular season record. Their SCT Round of 16 opponent, Long Branch, has been a confusing team to follow during the season. The Green Wave (12-9) suffered some losses to sub .500 teams, yet proved capable of defeating top teams such as Point Beach, the SCT’s #2 seed. Both teams brought strong efforts to their game last Thursday evening. Long Branch came out strong in opening quarter and jumped out to a 17-9 lead. Dwight Clark, who finished with a game-high 25 points,

The win put the Piners on a collision course with surprising Matawan, the lowest-seeded team remaining in the tournament. LINCROFT— Point Beach stepped onto the court undefeated, but St. John Vianney made sure they walked off the court tasting defeat for the first time this season. The Lancers defeated the Garnet Gulls, 76-54, in the quarterfinals of

the girls’ basketball Shore Conference Tournament at Brookdale Community College. SJV, the 2nd seed in the tournament, proved to have a deeper, more well-rounded roster than Point Beach. The Gulls were in the game early with the score 36-28 at halftime, but the wheels came off in the second half.

Campbell ended in double figures. The Lancers, who are playing without senior star, Kat Egan, who is out due to injury, will face Point Boro in the SCT semifinals at Brookdale at 6pm on Tuesday, February 19th.

The sisters have the Panthers’ one game from the Shore Conference Tournament with a rematch against St. John Vianney who handed Boro their only loss back in January. Kelly who has been a scoring machine at the Jersey Shore for the past four years continued her scoring this season with 24.6 points per game and her sister, Lauren, with 19.3 points per game. The Hughes sisters along with Kerry Malleck and Lindsey Havens have the Panthers offense clicking on all cylinders. Coming off their impressive win over a highly talented Rumson Fair Haven squad in the finals of the WOBM classic, this group looks primed at making a run at the Shore Conference sweep next week for the Shore Conference Title. Up first, they will need to slow down a Vianney squad that has revitalized themselves after the loss of Kat Egan and opened up their offensive play. If the Panthers should get by the Lancers they will look at a possible rematch against Rumson Fair Haven. The Panthers are also on the fast track at another NJSIAA Title shot with a number one seed in the Central Jersey Group II Tournament but once again will have to get the through possibly for the third time this season Rumson Fair Haven and a hungry Manasquan team that is looking to repeat last season’s success.

Spartans Reach Wrestling Final By Michael Rogers The Ocean wrestling team has had a successful season with a 19 win and 6 loss record, but coach Cippy Apicelli knew beating Brick (18 wins and 5 losses) would be a tough task and even though the Spartans gave great effort and coach Apicelli tried some moving of the roster, the Spartans came up short against Brick losing by the score of 42 to 23. Ocean was trying to win a sectional championship that was Brick's second championship. Brick used wins by their top wrestlers along with some other wins to ensure the title. Dan Wojtaszek (24 win and 3 loss record) got a pin over Viet Le in 1:08. Dan’s brother Kyle was also a winner as he pinned Ocean's Patrick Tracey in 2:37. When Ocean won the toss and bumped some wrestlers to different weight classes to try and gain an ad-

vantage, Brick was able to answer at every chance they got. Ocean bumped Tommy Lyster, who normally wrestles at 185, up to wrestle at 220 pounds, which meant Jacob Bell would wrestle at 185. The first part of the move worked as Lyster won his match with a pin, but Bell lost a tough 7 to 4 decision to Anthony Dzugan. In the earlier matches Ocean won at 138 pounds with an 8 to 2 decision by Zach Hertling over Dean Sherry. T.J. Saldutti lost a hard fought 3 to 0 decision to Brick's Nick Pollara and Nick Colalillo lost a tough pin to Steve Cimmino. Brick's pair of junior great wrestlers also came through as they have for most of the season as Dan Rackliffe and Conor Mulligan both registered pins. Coach Apicelli was proud of his team and said, " We needed 5 or 6 things to go our way and they just didn't work out."

Matawan Stuns CBA In SCT Round of 16 By Sean Simmons

Matawan sophomore guard Joe Piscopo led all scorers with 20 points and also knocked down a buzzer-beating fade away jumper to lead the 24th-seeded Huskies to a dramatic 51-50 win over the eighth-seeded CBA Colts in a Shore Conference Round of 16 matchup in Lincroft on February 14th. It was the Colts first home loss of this season and also their first home in the SCT since joining the Shore Conference in 1982.

“Piscopo was tremendous,” Matawan coach Tom Stead said. “We used a lot of ball screens to get him open and he shoots the ball very well off the dribble. He’s only a 5’8” sophomore, but he has the heart of a lion.” With CBA (15-7) leading 24-19 at halftime, Matawan (12-9) used suffocating defense during the third quarter holding the Colts to just eight points and the Huskies ended up going into the fourth quarter with a 33-32 lead. Sophomore guard Jason Dunne provided the spark for the Huskies during the third quarter scoring eight of his 10 points.

Tomkins (five points), each had chances at putbacks that came up short. The ball ended up coming loose in the paint and Phillip made a spectacular play diving into the pile and getting a hand on the ball and rolling it to Piscopo. Piscopo then buried a jump shot as time expired making the final score 51-50 setting off a wild celebration by the Matawan student section who stormed the court in jubilation. Also having a solid game for the Huskies was junior forward, Chris Tawiah, who scored eight points. “We knew going into the game that we had our work cut out for us and playing in front of the Colt Crazies can be pretty overwhelming,” Stead said. During the preliminary round of the SCT, the Huskies stunned the ninth-seeded RBC Caseys (13-7) by the score of 4537.

“We played very well defensively and we didn’t want to give Pat Andree and Kevin Neller open looks at the basket,” Stead said.

According to Stead, it was the Huskies first SCT win in at least eight seasons. Tawiah, who netted all his points on four 3-pointers had six points during the third quarter when Matawan outscored RBC, 13-10 to increase a 15-12 halftime lead to 28-22. Piscopo led the Huskies with 15 points, which included three 3-pointers.

With the Huskies trailing 50-49 with 19 seconds left in the game, Matawan had a timeout to use, but Stead decided not to use it. Piscopo ended up missing a shot and then senior forward, Ian Phillip (eight points), and junior forward, Nick

MANALAPAN— The opening round of the Handchen Cup got underway last week and it didn’t take long for things to shake up. The 8th seeded Manalapan ice hockey team stunned top seed Rumson-Fair Haven (15-5-2) by a score of 6-1. The upset immediately sent shockwaves through the bracket with the heavily favored Bulldogs down for the count. The Braves (14-10) used the hot stick for Patrick Gaglione, an opportunistic power play, and stellar goaltending to pull off the upset. Gaglione, a junior forward, turned in a hat trick with two of the goals coming in the second period to help ice the game. He also added an assist. Fellow junior, Mike Lisciandro, scored twice including the game’s first goal to stake Manalapan to a 1-0 lead. RFH an-

swered back as Brendan Ban scored to tie the game, but Lisciandro put the Braves back on top late in the first pe riod. Gagliano added the first insur ance goal in the second period then Manalapan broke open the game with three goals in the third period. RFH outshot the Braves 39-14. It was a tremendous effort by junior netmind er, Joe Barone, who came up with 38 saves. Barone’s play helped Manala pan advance to earn a date with St. Rose in the Handchen Cup semifinals. The Purple Roses were a 6-4 winner over Freehold Township in their quar terfinal game. The semifinals are set to be completed by this Wednesday with the championship game taking place Saturday, February 23rd at 7:00pm at the Red Bank Armory.

The Shore Regional boys’ basketball team is having a great season with a 16 win and 5 loss season and they have been ranked in the top ten in the Shore Conference for most of the season. The Blue Devil's have used an up tempo style of play all season while using the three point shot as a major weapon in their offense, but against Manalapan in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament just couldn't get their offense going and fell to the Braves by the score of 73 to 57.

Dowd and Handchen Cup Tourneys Underway By Ted Kaiser

JERSEY SHORE— The Dowd Cup and Handchen Cup ice hockey tournaments began last week. The two torunaments are essentially the Shore Conference Tournament of ice hockey, but are divided into two divisions. The top seed in the Dowd Cup is Brick Township who was set to face 8th seeded Toms River North last weekend. Wall, the #2 seed, already advanced with an 8-4 win over Toms River East. J.T. Tarantino had four goals to spark the Crimson Knights back from a 2-0 deficit after

one period. Wall will likely face 3rd seed Brick Memorial in the semifinals. Point Boro and Southern were set to face off in the 4th versus 5th seed game for the right to possibly play Brick Township.

LINCROFT - Red Bank Catholic had beaten A Division Central rival Manasquan twice in a pair of regular season games this year and RBC coach, Joe Montano, knowing that it is difficult to beat a good team three times in a row, wanted to start off quickly in Saturday's quarterfinal game with the Warriors at Brookdale Commnity College. Montano's game plan was accomplished with the Caseys coasting to a 45-31 win in which it was never threatened after grabbing a 16-4 first quarter lead. That set up a semifinal match with Middletown South, which had beaten Rumson-Fair Haven Regional 51-50 in overtime Saturday. It will be the first

meeting between RBC and South since the semifinals of the Shore Conference Tournament in 2006. "I was pleased that we got off to a good start," said Montano. "I didn't want Manasquan to get any confidence. Their coach (Lisa Kukoda) is doing a tremendous job with that team considering she lost three Division I players." Kukoda is a former RBC player who played for Montano a few years ago. In winning, RBC made use of a solid defense and good fundamentals, along with balanced scoring in holding the Warriors to just 10 points in the first half. Alex Alfano, Mary Kate Caverly and Grace Fallon led the way for RBC with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively. "It's hard to pick out a kid every day," said Montano, now in his 22nd year as head playgirls coach at RBC. “If one of our play ers is shut down, others have to step up and do some things. Alfano and Fallon hit some big shots for us." RBC had its largest lead at 31-12 midway in the third period after a seven-point run capped by a layup from Fallon. Manasquan made a brief run, but could get no closer than 34-23 early in the fourth quarter as RBC slowed up the pace.

Sophomore, Mike Jones (23-6), was up next at 106 for the Green Wave. His four takedowns held off Kyle Refalvy for a 10-8 decision, before sophomore, Tommy Flannigan (15-6), restrained Terrier Vito Intili, taking a 8-2 decision.

The sectional final was close throughout the match. It was 10-10 after four bouts and 16-16 after seven. After 10 weights, Long Branch held a slim 21-19 advantage. With four bouts remaining, it was anyone’s match to win.

“I told Hernandez to ‘wrestle to win’,” Long Branch coach Dan George said. “I didn’t want him to wrestle tentative, that’s when you get pinned. So many of these matches could have gone either way, they know how to slow you down and get the pin.”

Now ahead 27-19, Long Branch sent freshman, Danny Rios (5-10), to the mat at 120 against Delaware Valleys Ryan Irwin. Irwin out-muscled Rios to gain a major decision win. The win pulled the Terriers to within four points, 27-23, but it wasn’t enough as the Green Wave had Hernandez waiting in the wings to wrap up the match in dramatic fashion.
