TRINITY HALL SOCCER MAKING HUGE STRIDES IN FIRST SEASON AT THE VARSITY LEVEL By Mike Ready
LEONARDO – Starting its third year with a total enrollment of 110, including 33 freshman students and no senior class, Trinity Hall – an all-girl catholic school - is in its infant stages of athletic competition with many girls never having played a competitive sport before suiting up for the Monarchs.
2005 and 2010. He’s been coaching at the high school and college level for 16 years, including a stint as an assistant coach at Monmouth University. He was inducted into the Villanova athletic hall of fame in 2011 and played professional soccer in both the United States and Portugal. At the end of the day, Santos’ resume should be able to attract the kind of athlete that wants to take her game to the next level and be a cornerstone of building a winning tradition at Trinity Hall. Junior defender Erica O’Kelly and junior midfielder Katie Valsamedis are two such girls. “I would consider Erica and Katie my two leaders and most experienced players,” Santos said. “They do most the heavy work around here as far as the younger girls go, so yea I would consider them our leaders.”
TRINTI HALL’S #5 ERICA O’KELLY However, when you have Ken Santos as your head coach, convincing girls to come out for the soccer team is not as difficult as one might think. Santos, also the school’s athletic director, has an extensive soccer background as impressive as it is lengthy. He coached the Red Bank Catholic girls soccer team to Shore Conference Championships in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and state championships in
In its first year as a varsity sport, his soccer team has already exceeded expectations winning three games so far this season, but when you lack the senior leadership that most schools have it eventually takes its toll. “My juniors have been with me for three years and lots of good things are going on,” Santos said. “We’re young and a little inexperienced but we are playing at the varsity level and the girls are very excited to be doing that. We’re playing against teams that are starting five or six seniors, and upperclass leadership is a huge reason for a lot of success and we don’t have that yet.” The Monarchs (3-8) have wins against Keyport, Kent Place, and Long Branch and have
lost two games by one goal. They’ve played a very tough scheduled including a game against Rumson-Fair Haven – ranked No.2 in the Shore Conference – in which they were down by only one goal at halftime ultimately losing 5-0. “We play hard but our experience makes us fall off a bit eventually,” Santos said. “We’re learning, we’re gaining a lot of experience which is helping us, and we have some really good young players. We had so few girls in the first year we asked girls, who even if they didn’t play, to come out and be TRINTI HALL’S #11 ISABELLA GRIMES part of a team and have that experience. We’re still doing that. We only have 110 girls in the school and we’re basically asking all of them to play a sport.” To be a member of the Shore Conference, you must meet certain minimum requirements with one of them being having 10 varsity teams. Trinity Hall didn’t meet that requirement their first two years, but they do now, and a couple of weeks ago were accepted into the Shore Conference and will competing in the Class B Central division next season. “I think the team is chomping at the bit and hungry,” Santos said. “I can see it in their faces and body language after a loss. I can see their frustration and see that they know just how close we are. And I know they’re not happy with the results. I think they’re hungry and want to see more success.”

TOP TEAMS SHUTOUT OPPONENTS IN SHORE-A CONFERENCE By Michael Ward
Middletown South shut out Howell on Friday night to remain undefeated in the Shore-A North Division. The 47-0 win saw most of the scoring done in the first half and only seven points scored in the second. Quarterback Matt Mosquera threw for 86 yards, which included 2 touchdown passes, and com-
pleted 4 out of 8 attempts in the air. Running back Cole Rogers rushed for over 200 yards and ran in two touchdowns.
out of the gate with 21 points in the first quarter alone, followed by 14 in the second. The 5-0 Lancers will face off against their local rivals when the Raritan Rockets of Hazlet come to Holmdel on October 16th. First place Brick Township prevailed over Wall Township for a 19-0 victory. Brick
quarterback threw for 145 yards, which included 1 touchdown pass all over 6 completions. Ja’sir Taylor was at the receiving end of 5 of those passes, running the football for 77 yards total. Matt Schleifer caught a 12 yard pass in the endzone and the tag team of Joe Sclafani and Thomas Zbranak ran in two.

Olympic Gold Medalist Mentors Rumson-Fair Haven Girls By Michael Ward
Three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Christie Rampone stopped by a Rumson-Fair Haven girls soccer practice to talk to the varsity, junior varsity and freshman squads about how to improve their game and what it’s like to play soccer professionally. Christie is a New Jersey native who grew up in Point Pleasant and attended Monmouth University, where she narrowed her sports interests from four to one. After playing soccer for the Monmouth Hawks and graduating in 1996, she joined semi-professional teams based in New Jersey and eventually made her way to the pros, playing for New York Power. She represented the United States in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 in the Summer Olympics.

Ocean Dominates with 3 Straight Shutouts By Ted Kaiser
OCEAN TOWNSHIP-- Following their second loss of the season, the Ocean boys' soccer team was ready to bounce back and turn that disappointment into fuel for their next winning streak. The Spartans ripped off three consecutive shutouts to instead send the frustration to their opponent's sidelines. First was a 4-0 rout of Red Bank Catholic back on September 30th, then last week Ocean handled Red Bank Regional 5-0 for shutout number two. Sophomore keeper Thomas Gleason made eight saves in net and senior Marlhens Nasanes scored twice and added an assist.
When asked about one area where she wished she would have known when she was in high school, Christie said: “Definitely taking care of yourself and making sure your body stays healthy. Especially when it comes to nutrition.” “It’s easy to not realize that what you take in comes into play when you get on the field. It affects you more when you’re out of high school, but it’s a good habit to get into now as you develop, especially if you want to play professionally.” Another area where Christie gave advice on was in exercising and making sure aspiring professional soccer players don’t put their energy in the wrong areas if/when they go to the gym. “We’re soccer players, right? So most of your strength you want in your core and legs.” Rampone expressed gratitude in being able to play the sport she loves for a living and now gets to spend time with her family, especially her two children.

On Friday, the Spartans blanked Neptune 6-0 to extend the winning streak to three. Seniors Joe Abrams and Nasanes each netted a pair of goals, and senior Ryan Wells and sophomore Steven Carton also scored for Ocean. Over the weekend, the Spartans were set to face Montclair in a non-conference tilt. Ocean's record heading into that contest was 9-2 overall and 8-1 in the Shore Conference Class B North Division. This week they will match up against Long Branch (10/12), Colts Neck (10/14), and Wall (10/16). Wall currently is undefeated and leads the division by one game over Ocean. The Spartans will look to avenge a 1-0 loss in their next contest.

RED BANK CATHOLIC’S LIAM SMITH HONORED FOR SEMPER FIDELIS ALL-AMERICAN BOWL SELECTION by Mike Ready
RED BANK – As massive 6-foot-5, 285-pound offensive tackle Liam Smith stood at the podium to receive his Semper Fidelis All-American game-day jersey Tuesday at the Vincent J. Eck Student Center – presented to him by members of the United States Marine Corp - his humility and modesty were evident before he even uttered a word.
This season, 247 Sports has him ranked the No.1 offensive tackle in New Jersey, the 14th best overall prospect in N.J. and the 41st ranked offensive tackle in the nation. On April 13 of this year, Smith made a verbal commitment to continue his football career at Duke University in 2016.
“I was thrilled, I was kind of surprised; it came out of nowhere,” Smith said. “It’s such an honor and privilege to be able to go out there in California and play on national television and represent my friends, my family and my community. I’d especially like to thank the Marine Corp. for putting on this event and selecting me. Without the things the Marines do for us every day, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to pursue things like football and enjoy the freedom we have; so again I’d like to thank the Marines.”
Two additional Duke University commits, offensive tackle Robert Kraeling from Prince Avenue Christian School in Bogart, Georgia and outside linebacker Koby Quansah of Kingsford-Oxford High School in West Hartford, Connecticut accepted invitations to play in the game and Liam has already been in touch with his future teammates.
Bordering on tears that spoke volumes of the type of man this gentle giant is, his sincerity rang true as he quietly but firmly thanked everyone from his extended family for their support and love, his head coach Jim Portella, his teammates - which he referred to as his second family say-
ing: “you’re all my brothers and I wouldn’t be here without you.” He also thanked the cheerleaders, RBC staff and the entire Casey community, which he said: “made such a big impact on my life and of course the Marines.” His gratitude for all the opportunities bestowed upon him during his three years at Red Bank Catholic High School in the class room and on the playing field flowed from him as freely as one of his trademark pancake blocks which he’s famous for. “First of all, everything starts with Liam as a person,” Portella said. “For all our players, we make sure they understand that their value to us isn’t as football players it’s as people, and Liam’s a good kid, a great leader and a mentor for the younger guys. Obviously he’s a very gifted football player, but what I’ve found, the kids that do really well at the next level are kids that are not just good football players but are the ones that have a great desire to improve and a great desire to work at their trade, and Liam has that.” “Coach Portella has been the best coach I’ve ever had,” Smith said. “He’s a great leader, he’s intense, he gets on his players and expects the best out of everyone. He demands that you give your best effort so you reach your potential and that’s meant a lot in my development.”
LIAM SMITH AND USMC CAPTAIN JOSEPH McGinniss Photos by Mike Ready
As a junior, Smith was selected first team AllShore and second team All-State by the Star ledger while leading his team to their first state title since 1976. He helped pave the way to a total 2,804-rushing yard for a 233.7 per- game average including 167-yards rushing against a very good Delbarton defense in their Non-Public Group III championship win ending a 38-year drought.
“I haven’t been able to meet them yet,” Smith said. “But we’ve talked and we text and tweet to each other all the time.” “I chose Duke University for a number of reasons,” Smith said. “It was where I was the most comfortable and I think their football program is heading in a great direction. I think they got great leadership at the coaching positions and all the teammates I’m going to have there are going to be really solid players that I can count on. And the academics kind off just speak for themselves, they’re phenomenal. I like business and communications and they’ve got great programs in those areas.” “It’s not only a great honor for Liam, but for the program as well,” Portella said. “Liam’s going to have a great experience at the Semper Fidelis Bowl so we’re very excited for him. It’s a great opportunity to see some kids he’s going to play with at the next level and get an idea of the speed of the game at the next level and the physicality of the game at that level.” The bowl name Semper Fidelis is Latin for “always faithful,” which is the motto of the United States Marine Corps and has particular significance for Smith. “That’s kind of a similar motto to the one we have here at Red Bank Catholic,” Smith said. “Everyone on our team is willing to do whatever it takes to be successful as a team, so if that means playing a position you’re not used to playing or doing anything out of the ordinary all my teammates will do whatever it takes.”
LIAM SMITH WITH HIS FAMILY Smith’s job is far from over at Red Bank Catholic before he takes off for Duke University. The Caseys only loss last season was to Jackson Memorial and the two teams meet at Count Basie Field on the final week of the regular season, November 6. Currently the Caseys (4-0) are ranked third in the Asbury Park Press Poll while Jackson Memorial (3-1) is ranked fifth. Then there are the playoffs and chance to win back-to-back championships. “We want to go undefeated this year, we don’t any trip ups like last year,” Smith said. “And we want to win another state championship.” The Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl will be televised on Sunday, January 3, 2016 on Fox Sports 1, live from the Stub Hub Center on the campus of California St. University. “The Marines have a motto,” Portella said. “Once a Marine, Always a Marine.” We have a similar motto here at Red Bank Catholic: “’Once a Casey, Always a Casey,’ and we’re just so proud of Liam for what he’s brought to the Red Bank Catholic program.”

B- CENTRAL / NORTH / SOUTH WRAP UP By Michael Ward
Shore-B North Darkness descended on Shore-B North when the lights went out in the middle of Long Branch’s home game against Rumson-Fair Haven. In the third quarter, Rumson was leading Long Branch by a score of 28-0 when a nearby transformer blew leaving the players in darkness. The game was postponed from that point until officials later decided
that 28-0 would be ruled the final score. Bryan Hess rushed for 123 yards which included 2 touchdown drives. Michael Hess rushed for 67 yards and had a touchdown drive of his own. Shore-B Central Asbury Park barely squeaked by Middlesex in a too close for comfort 14-13 victory. Bam Stephens was responsible for catching two successful touchdown passes and went 135 yards over 4 total receptions. Quarterback Davon Thompson made 50% of his 8 passing attempts. Shore-B South Point Pleasant Boro won in a close game with Central Regional, coming home victorious with less than a possession’s worth of points between the two teams. Nathan and Nosh Husak both ran in two touchdown drives each. Nathan ran for 170 yards and Noah 93 yards. Point Boro is still undefeated at 4-0.

Blue Devil Boys Undefeated
Wall Quite the Obstacle for Opponents By Michael Ward
By Michael Rogers
The Wall Boy’s Squad has proven themselves to be formidable tacticians on the field throughout the 2015 season thus-far. Their strategy of being a highly defense unit has handed them a series of low scoring victories that have yet to be bested.
The Shore Regional boys soccer team is undefeated so far this season and are ranked #2 in the Shore Conference only behind CBA (9-0). The Blue Devils have a record of 12-0 and they are also undefeated in the B Central Division and have a two game lead on Point Pleasant Beach (6-2-1). They have posted six shutouts so far this season and have outscored their opponents 61 goals to 9 this season.
Currently sitting atop of the Shore-B North Division at 9-0-2, the Crimson Knights have prevented many of their opponents from gaining the upper hand or scoring entirely.
In their most recent dominating victory, the Blue Devils defeated Ranney by the score of 7-0 after leading 2-0 at halftime. Shore poured on 5 goals in the second half with goalie Evan Coffey and Matt Malley posting a combined shutout. Shore swept the season series with Ranney, as they defeated them earlier this season by the score of 5 to 1. In another game this week, Shore defeated Mater Dei by the score of 5 to 1. After jumping out to a 4-0 halftime lead, the Blue Devils played solid in the second half as well posting the 5 to 1 win.
SHORE’S #16 JOSH DEFINO
Their two ties are attributed from Saturday’s matchup with Red Bank Regional where neither team scored, ending in a 0-0 tie. The other tie was back in September against Long Branch which ended in a 1-1 stalemate. Since then they’ve come back and bested The Green Wave with a 1-0 effort last Thursday.
SHORE’S #21 MICHAEL BARRECA Photos by: Fran Attardi J.T. Kessler led the offense scoring 3 goals in the game while Dante Montesinos scored a goal and added 2 assists in the game. Steve Jonson scored the other goal for Shore coming off of a Brett Norman assist. Norman had 2 assists in the game. Goalie Matt Malley made 5 saves while the Blue Devils outshot the Seraphs 23 to 6 in the game. So far this season, the Blue Devils have been led in scoring by Kessler who has scored 20 goals and has added 10 assists. Montesinos has scored 17 goals and also has 8 assists, while Steve Johnson and Brett Norman have each scored 5 goals this season and each of them has also added 6 assists. In goal, Evan Coffey has been fantastic all season posting the 6 shutouts; and he has made 36 saves this season. Matt Malley has also gotten some time in goal and has recorded 10 saves this season. The Blue Devils will look to keep their undefeated season going this week with games against Asbury Park (who they beat 4-1 already this season) and St. Rose (who they beat 6-1 earlier this season), before a big showdown with Rumson Fair Haven who are 11-0 so far this season and are ranked just behind the Blue Devils. That game will be on Oct. 17th, and it will be the first time the two teams have played this season.
Before their tie with Red Bank Regional on Saturday, Wall shutout their opponents for 6 games in a row. Long Branch, Colts Neck and Ocean Township all fell in 1-0 losses to the Crimson Knights. Manasquan couldn’t respond to either of Wall’s goals in their 2-0 loss and defense was lacking for Neptune and RBC in their 4-0 and 3-0 losses in late September.
WALL’S #20 ROBBIE WOOD
WALL’S #2 REILLY BARCAS Photos by: Alex Stamoutsos Representing much of the offense is Reilly Barcas, a senior who has scored 7 goals across the season with 2 assists. Contributing also is Junior Ryan Gordon, who has gotten 3 in the net so far in 2015. Japheth Segura, a senior, has been there for his teammates providing a team high 4 assists. The Shore-B North Division is one of most competitive in all of the Shore Conference. Although Wall is currently on top and undefeated, they don’t have much room for missteps. Ocean Township is right on their heels with a similar nine wins but two losses and Colts Neck right behind them at 8-3-1. Looking ahead at Wall’s schedule, they’ll be facing Red Bank Catholic (10/12), Neptune, (10/14) and Ocean Township (10/16). Every game that Wall has won, they’ve shut out their opponents. Only in games that they’ve tied has there been an opponent goal. All of these teams and any future opponents will have to be aggressive on the field or figure out Wall’s defense to prove any effort successful.

BULLDOGS GIRLS SOCCER CLINCHES CLASS A CENTRAL DIVISION WITH WIN OVER HOLMDEL by Mike Rogers
RUMSON – The Rumson-Fair Haven girls soccer team locked up the Class A Central division for the second straight year, dominating last season’s NJSIAA Group II champion Holmdel 3-0 at Rumson’s Borden Field Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 in the latest Asbury Park Press poll, were running on all cylinders as they excelled in all phases of the game when it counted most, playing against their long-time rival Holmdel –ranked right behind the Bulldogs at No.3. The two teams met earlier this season in a Shore Conference classic, as Rumson beat the Hornets 5-4 in double overtime when Grace Forsyth scored off an assist from Jacqueline Littleson to end the marathon contest. In Thursday’s contest, it was the Bulldogs defense and goaltending that shined, holding Holmdel’s potent offensive attack - led by
Hornets all-time points scorer Gabby Bair (55 goals, 30 assists) - at bay until the opportunistic Rumson offense eventually got on the board. At 27:19 of the first half, freshman forward Grace Karagjozi was tripped up in the box and a penalty kick was awarded to the Bulldogs (10-1-1, 7-0-1). Sophomore forward Margot Ridgeway converted her eighth goal of the season, and the Bulldogs took a vital 1-0 lead with the importance of scoring first in a game of this magnitude never underscored. “I usually shoot from the goalie’s right side, even though that’s the goalie’s strong hand,” Ridgeway said. “I shot high because the last game I missed low. So I went high today and hoped for the best.” The penalty kick goal was her eighth goal of the season. On the few scoring chances the Hornets (7-3, 5-2) had in the first half, the defense - led by
Michaela Borneo, Emma Gill, Brianna Worobel and Julianna Meinz - repeatedly clogged the scoring lanes with air-tight coverage that resulted in turnovers and getting the ball upfield, putting the offense back on attack. But the play of the first half – if not the game – came with seconds left as Bair was all alone about ten yards in front of the goal when she fired a shot on goal that Rumson goalie Samantha Beaudreault made a breathtaking diving stop at the buzzer to preserve the Bulldogs 1-0 lead heading into intermission. Beaudreault made nine saves in the game with most riveting in execution. “Sammy was phenomenal,” Rumson coach Mary Beth Coleman said. “She’s doing great this season, she’s improved so much and she’s kept us in a lot of games. The Bulldogs went ahead by two goals at 51:30 when sophomore Sofi Giglio’s dead-on corner kick from the left side found Karagjozi planted in the middle before she soared above the rest of the pack and headed it into the net for her 10th goal and an insurmountable 2-0 lead. It was Giglio’s team-leading eighth assist of the season. “All corner kicks are nerve wracking,” Giglio said. “I usually aim for Margo because she’s the tallest and had a good aim, but Grace made a great play for the score.” Giglio is a lightning-quick player who controls the midfield and who never stops hustling. She’s a spark plug who consistently sets plays in motion by winning 50/50 balls and getting the ball to her forwards upfield.

As a whole, we’re really coming together and our chemistry is taking us to wins.” With a little over 10 minutes to play, Rumson closed out the scoring with a cross from Littleson that found junior forward Grace Forsyth on the rush for her 13 goal of the season and a 3-0 advantage. The Bulldogs outshot the Hornets 12-to-8 while Holmdel goalie Mattie Milkowski made 10 saves. “This was a big game because it was basically for the division,” Coleman said. “We didn’t want to have to share the division title with anybody we wanted to win it outright. Now we’re just taking it one game at a time, we’re not looking ahead to anything. If we continue to play like we did today we’ll be very successful the rest of the way.”

Saint Rose Finds Daylight in Asbury Park By Michael Ward After coming off a nail biting match at Ranney School in Tinton Falls where they just fell short in a 2-1 match on Wednesday, Saint Rose came into Asbury looking for a rebound against their up-beach rivals. Throughout the first half, Saint Rose was a thorn in the side of the Asbury Blue Bishops, driving deep into Asbury territory. The offensive drive ST ROSE’S Saint Rose provided was not Photos by to be outmatched by Asbury for much of the first quarter, as they were able to protect and repel many attacks back to midfield. Asbury Park goalie Joe Johnson was effective and proactive at the last line of defense, racking up close to 15 saves in the first half alone. With four minutes left in the half, Saint Rose’s Matty O’Malley had his persistence rewarded with a goal in the corner of the net, bringing the Purple Roses to a hard fought 1-0 lead.
Cougars Top Shore-B North Food Chain By Michael Ward
The Lady Cougars of Colts Neck have earned themselves quite an accomplishment so far this season: They have yet to be defeated. The twelve teams they’ve faced so far have yet to figure out how to handle Colts Neck. Only Red Bank Catholic has held them to a 1-1 tie.
#15 ETHAN BODINE Michael Ward Asbury Park has their work cut out for them for the rest of the season. Their 2-10 record puts them currently next to last, in front of only Henry Hudson Regional, who hasn’t won any of their nine games this season. Asbury’s next game is against Shore Regional, setting up what could be a to-beexpected matchup, or an upset for the ages.
After the start of the second half, Saint Rose doubled down on their aggressive attack strategy and scored two more points for insurance. Matty O’Malley’s shot in the first half with an assist later, as well as support from Anthony DeMaio and Michael Gowen’s goals in the second proved to be too much for Asbury.
A simple look at the Colts Neck’s past matches makes this feat quite a testament to Red Bank Catholic, as they were able to penetrate their defensive lines and punch in a goal of their own, as well as have their own defense in top condition to prevent Colts Neck from scoring in one of their many trademark drives downfield. Colts Neck doesn’t like to just win, but to win in convincing fashion. The Cougars have scored an average of 4.5 goals on their opponents each match, as opposed to allowing an average of 0.6 goals against per game. Colts Neck has proven that their offense and defense are both forces to be reckoned with as they’ve grown comfortable with shutting
out their opponents and piling on goals of their own for maximum effect. Most recently, Long Branch and Neptune both found out these facts the hard way when they faced Colts Neck and had nothing to show for it but 9-0 and 6-0 shutouts respectively. The Cougars are flying high in their Shore B North Division. The next best thing to their 11-0-1 record is Wall Township, who is 7-4 overall followed by Red Bank Catholic who finds themselves at 7-5-2. At the heart of the Colts Neck effort are two girls who have truly shined as assassins in enemy territory. Frankie Tagliaferri, a junior, has scored an unprecedented 19 goals in 12 games as well as racking up 10 assists on the season. Senior Bridgette King has also proven equally lethal with 16 goals across 12 games. Kayla Lee, sophomore, shows great promise for the Colts Neck Soccer Program for her next two years. She’s been a great asset to the squad with 9 assists.
Saint Rose improved their record to 8-4 while Asbury slumped to 2-10. After this Friday evening match-up, Saint Rose wasn’t given much time to recover and called upon to face the better rested Manasquan Warriors in a Saturday morning matchup. They found themselves on the opposite end of shutout outing having nothing to respond against two goals from Manasquan.

Manalapan Looking To Challenge in Shore-A North By Michael Ward
Manalapan is bravely holding onto third place in their division as we’ve already put a month’s worth of games in the books. As they look to improve their 7-2-1 record, they have some lofty targets ahead of them if they want to move further up and possibly claim first place by season’s end. Right in front of Manalapan is Freehold Township, who is holding on by a thread to 2nd place when Division only records are compared. Freehold currently holds a 6-0-2 record in games against teams in their division while Manalpan is nipping at their heels with a 6-2-1. If Manalapan can surpass Freehold Township, next on their list would be the formidable squad at Christian Brothers Academy. The boys from Lincroft boast a 10-2 overall record and are not used to teams in the division being within a couple of games. If Manalapan wanted a time to strike and get ahead in the division, it is now. Manalapan goes head to head with CBA this Wednesday (10/14). To threaten, the Braves will have to live to their namesake and charge the ball hard and aggressively into CBA territory without giving them a chance to recover. CBA hasn’t

In CBA’s season opener on September 11th, Middletown North was overwhelmed with an onslaught of attacks to the net and was shutout 8-0. Middletown South didn’t fare much better a few days later when CBA made swiss cheese of their defense as well, claiming a 6-0 win. These games will have to be on the back of Manalapan’s mind as they face the top of their division. Strong attacks and keeping their opponent occupied on their side of the field may be the best method to claim victory.

The Shore Regional Girls soccer team started the season by losing their first two games, but since then, the lady Blue Devils have not lost a game. They have improved their record to 10-2-1 and are 5-0 within the B Central Division; a full 2 games ahead of Point Pleasant Beach. The Shore girls soccer team has also moved all the way up to a number 5 ranking in the Shore Conference.
In their other game last week, Shore did give up a goal but still kept on winning as they defeated Mater Dei by the score of 7 to 1. Shore jumped out to a 4 to 0 halftime lead and were led in scoring by Shannon Bonner, who scored 2 goals and added an assist. Hannah Birdsall, Frankie McDonough, and Katie Stephens each scored a goal and an assist in the game. The Panthers, which suffered a 3-0 loss to Donovan Catholic on Oct. 9, now own an 11-2 mark heading into tonight’s home game against Jackson Liberty at 6 p.m. The Donovan Catholic setback marked the first time this season that Point Boro was shutout, and just the second game this season that they have surrendered more than one goal in a game. That other contest signaled the Panthers’ only other loss of the season – a 2-1 decision to Central Regional on Sept. 21. Point Boro, under the direction of 10th year head coach Pete Casalino, bounced back from that Central Regional defeat to reel off nine straight victories. Five of those victories were by shutout, and five were by one goal. For the season, Point Boro has outscored its opposition 30-10, with junior goalie Tyler Haines responsible for the five shutouts. Juniors Sam Monaco and Mason Pitts have steered the Point Boro offense with five goals apiece. The

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN UPSET GIRLS SOCCER By Chris Orlando
Freehold Township head coach David Patterson knows that the rigors of the regular season will yield less than perfect results, but as the Lady Patriots approach the midpoint of the 2015 campaign, he remains cautiously optimistic.
by Mike Ready
HOLMDEL – It was beginning to feel a lot like 2013 for this year’s Bulldog soccer team, when that team made it to the Shore Conference Tournament and the NJSIAA CJGII finals before losing by one goal in each of those championship games.
“Certainly there will be hiccups along the way,” said Patterson, now in his sixth season at the helm. “But we’ve been playing as well as we can and are looking forward to what is yet to come.”
Entering Thursday’s game against Holmdel, the Bulldogs (11-0, 9-0) were undefeated, ranked fourth in the Shore Conference, and had already clinched the Class A Central division.
Heading into this past Saturday’s game at Middletown South, Freehold Township owned an 8-1-1 record and is coming off of its biggest offensive effort of the year – a 6-1 victory at Middletown North on Oct. 8. The Lady Patriots were paced in that game by Nicole Whitley, who found the back of the net twice. Jasmine Colbert and Kiersten Reszkowski each had a goal and an assist, and Jada Colbert and Brianna Cucinelli also added a score. Freehold Township began its season with five straight victories before playing to a 1-1 tie at
FREEHOLD TWP’S #19 CALIEGH FARRELL Photos by Arielle Figueredo Whitley, a senior midfielder, leads the team with 12 goals and seven assists while Jasmine Colbert, a sophomore forward, has totaled five goals and three assists. Senior midfielder Lacey Powell (two goals, four assists), senior defender Caleigh Farrell, and Sasso, a junior midfielder, are the team captains along with Whitley, as well as the catalysts that Freehold Township will look to help deliver its first Shore Conference Tournament since 2011 later this month. Those four have also made their college choices as Whitley will attend Rutgers, Sasso will head to Marist, Powell will go to Temple, and Farrell will attend the University of New Hampshire. Another key cog to this year’s success has been the play of Kaela Chadziutko, a senior goalie, who missed all of last year with a back injury. She has anchored the defense very successfully so far this season, posting four shutouts.
FREEHOLD TWP’S #3 JADA COLBERT neighborhood rival Freehold Borough on Sept. 25. Three days later, Freehold Township suffered its only loss of the season, suffering a 1-0 setback to Howell. The Lady Patriots are 3-1-1 in games decided by one goal or less, including non-conference victories over Shore Regional (2-1 on Sept. 4) and Wall (3-2 on Oct. 5).
A year ago, Freehold Township finished with a solid 15-4-1 record but lost in the first round of the Shore Conference and NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 4 tournaments. “They probably won’t be concerned with the SCT until we find out who we’re playing,” said Patterson. “Right now we have big regular season games ahead of us, so that’s what we’re focused on.”
On the other hand, perennial power Holmdel (3-4-5, 2-4-4) was in the midst of an off year and sitting in fifth place in the division. This is a team that lost in the CJGII final on penalty kicks a year ago to Governor Livingston. However, Holmdel did lose eight starters to graduation, so this is a relatively young and inexperienced team.
Freehold Township is battling Manalapan for the lead of the A North Division of the Shore Conference. Manalapan is 8-1 while Freehold Township owns a mark of 5-1-1. Freehold Township dealt Manalapan its only loss of the year on Sept. 21 in Freehold by a score of 3-2.

Of all the teams in the Class A Central, Rumson-Fair Haven returned most of its starting lineup from a year ago and that bodes well for them as they enter crunch time. Senior forward Jamie Martin led the team in scoring a year ago with nine goals and five assists and already has nine goals to lead the team with four assists – second on the team. He’s the team leader and will be counted on heavily to get the team back on track. The Bulldogs will also rely on senior forward Matt Maisto, who’s having a solid senior season after playing extended minutes a year ago and has also picked a leadership role. He’s second on the team in goals scored with seven along with three assists.
On paper it looked like an easy win for Rumson, but once these long-time arch rivals take the field against each other, there are no favorites. The Bulldogs learned that the hard way Thursday on Holmdel’s home field, as the Hornets thoroughly outplayed Rumson and brought them back to reality with a stunning 4-1 victory to salvage what has been a dismal season this far for Holmdel.
New comer Owen Greengrove - a sophomore midfielder - has been a pleasant surprise for the Bulldogs, scoring five goals and assisting on three others. He needs to continue to contribute in the scoring column to take some of the pressure off Martin and Maisto.
Up until Thursday’s loss, the Bulldogs had allowed only 10 goals in 11 games while scoring 28 for an 18-goal game differential. They had already beaten Holmdel in a close2-1 game in mid-September, so I would assume Rumson did not overlook the young Hornets.
Another important piece of the puzzle is senior goalie Markar Krikorian who had a strong showing last season as junior and has established himself as one to the top goal keepers in the Shore, stopping 89 shots while allowing only 14 goals in 12 games. Obviously the Bulldogs need him to continue to be a force in the net.
But as they say in the sporting world: “any team is capable of beating any team on any given day.” The question now is how this Bulldog team will respond with the regular season rapidly coming to a closure and tournament time right around the corner.
“We have a pretty impressive non-conference schedule and we like it that way.” said Patterson. “It is always good to challenge ourselves. We play at Pennington on the 17th and going up against teams like that can only help us, come time for the conference and state tournaments.”
Nicole Sasso was responsible for the gamewinner when she scored after Whitley sent a free kick into the box in the 75th minute, as Freehold took a 3-1 lead. The two teams will meet for the second time on Oct. 19 in Manalapan.

Quality teams have the ability to shake off losses like the one the Bulldogs suffered. It comes from within and starts with the heart. Shaking up a team with an unexpected loss can work to a team’s advantage or it can go south and destroy a team; it’s now up to the Bulldogs which path they decide to take.

the final one for head coach Dan Keane, a memorable one. Through its first 12 games, the Lincroft school has fashioned a 10-2 record; which includes victories in nine of its last 10 games. In its most recent victory, Christian Brothers flexed its offensive muscle, striking for five goals to register a 5-0 victory over Freehold Borough in Lincroft on Thursday afternoon. The Colts were paced by junior Patrick Kollman, who had the first hat trick of his career. The result took a back seat to the pre-game festivities, however, as seemingly the entire Christian Brothers Academy community came out to honor Keane. Christian Brothers currently owns a 9-1 record in Shore Conference Class A North play and a game and a half lead over Manalapan (7-2-1). The annual Shore Conference Tournament will be seeded later this month, with the Colts playing for its first SCT title since 2011.
2011 was also the last year that Christian Brothers won a state title. That season, the Colts defeated Delbarton 1-0 in overtime to win the Non-Public A championship. The Colts finished with a perfect 21-0 record, earning the No. 1 ranking in the state. “We still have a long way to go but I think we have a chance to make this a very special season,” said Matson. “We break our season into four sections: the regular season; the SCT; the South Jersey tournament, and the state tournament. We still have work to do.”

RED BANK REGIONAL REMAINS UNDEFEATED, HANDS RARITAN FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON by Mike Ready
HAZLET – The start of Friday night’s game between Red Bank and Raritan was delayed until 8:30 p.m. as the sky’s opened up with a soaking rain and periods of thunder and lightning that made a postponement seem inevitable.
But the Buc defense dug in and on second-and-goal from the eight, junior outside linebacker Chris Outterbridge – who again recorded double-digit tackles – and safety Jalen Willis ran down Ernst for a nine-yard loss setting up a third-and –goal from the 17.
Raritan advanced the ball to the Bucs 39 and decided to go for it on fourth-and-2 but stud defensive end Sean Naiman and Outterbridge combined to stop Ernst for a one-yard gain turning the ball back over to the Bucs.
But amazingly enough, just as predicted, the weather improved and by game-time it was a perfect night for some football.
Rocket quarterback Jonathan Rodriquez - who replaced starting QB Marc Carnivale to start the second half – took the snap and faded back looking for the 6-foot4 Smith in the end zone but Syracuse University commit Sadiq Palmer was all over him picking off the ball and returning it all the way to the Raritan 49. However, a block in the back penalty on the return set the ball back at the Bucs 23, but Red Bank retained possession averting a possible tie.
“We knew about Ernst coming in,” Naiman said. “He’s a big player for them and he was our focus.”
It was also a perfect night for the unbeaten Buccaneers – ranked No.9 in the Asbury Park Press top 10 – to play football, as this closeknit group of athletes again rode their intimidating defense, opportunistic offense, and stellar kicking game to their fifth straight win beating No.10 Raritan 30-14 in Hazlet. The Bucs defense held the Rockets (3-1) to 14 points, 236 total yards and 11 first downs in the game. 2014 second-team All-Shore running back Derek Ernst did run for a game-high 143 yards on 27 carries but 61 of those yards can on a touchdown run on Raritan’s first possession of the third quarter that pulled the Rockets to within 16-8 after a successful two-point conversion. “Ernst is a tremendous running back,” Bucs coach Nick Giglio said. “He’s a different style running back, he’s stocky, he’s quick, and he’s so hard to tackle.” Other than that long touchdown run by Ernst, the Bucs defense held him to 82 yards on 26 carries for a 3.1 yards/ carry average. Prior to Friday night’s game, he had gained 467 yards on 55 carries for 8.5 yards/carry average. Raritan didn’t have an offensive play that gained over 20 yards the rest of the way and the Bucs (5-0) have held their five opponents to an average of 6.8 points a game. Following Ernst’s touchdown, things got a bit dicey for the Bucs, when on their subsequent possession senior quarterback Jack Navitsky was picked off by Raritan free safety Jordan Smith at the Buc 25yard line and returned all the way to the end zone for six.
“Huge stops, that is the key we’re getting them now,” Giglio said. “It’s huge and our team is building off of those stops and it’s carrying over into offense giving them momentum as well.” The two teams traded punts before the Bucs got on the board again to give them a little breathing room. A Navitsky to Teddy Mitchell 31-yard completion to the seven on firstand-10 from the 38 set up a threeyard burst up the middle by Alim Godsey on second down for a 23-8 lead with 5:02 left in the third.
From there, Red Bank put together a 12-play drive and had a first-and-goal from the nine, but three straight runs netted only six yard and they decided to call on their secret weapon. O’Connor nailed a 22-yard field goal for his third successful kick of the half. One of the best kickers/punters in the Shore this season, O’Connor came through with 12 points in Friday’s game. “What a super kid Jack (O’Connor) is, “Giglio said. “He’s been a shining light for us. He’s worked at his craft and has a great mind set out there and he’s a weapon anywhere right now.” Now leading 16-0 with 4:09 remaining in the half, two big plays by Outterbridge and one by Palmer forced another Raritan punt which got a favorable roll all the way to the Bucs two-yard line. Backed up to their own end zone, a nine-yard run by Godsay gave the Bucs a first-and-10 at the 14 but Godsey coughed up the ball turning it over to the Rockets at the 18.
However, with this Buc defense it doesn’t matter what position they’re put in. They seem to be able to always rise to the occasion, and that’s exactly what they did once again. A seven-yard sack by middle linebacker Brian Fagan on third down put the Rockets in a fourth-and-13 position before Outterbridge forced Nicholas Pasquin out of bounds after a short four-yard reception preserving the first half shutout and a 16-0 halftime lead. Raritan scored with 1:49 left in the game on a Rodriguez to Pasquin 18-yard touchdown reception, but Palmer knocked down a pass intended for Smith for the two-point conversion with the score now 23-14. Red Bank recovered the onside kick and three plays later Palmer put the game away for good with a 40-yard TD run where he ran left, reversed field, received a crunching block from Reardon and bolted down the right sideline. Palmer finished with 88-yards rushing and one TD and one reception for 28 yards while playing an awesome defensive game in coverage as well as run support with at least eight tackles. The Bucs finished with 355 total yards with Godsay gaining 67 yards on 15 carries while Mitchell added 53 yards on just four runs. Navitsky went 4-of-10 for 92 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
The Bucs built a comfortable lead in the first half on field goals of 37 and 42 yards on their first two possessions by Jack O’Connor before Navitsky hooked up with Matt Reardon on fade pattern deep in the right side of the end zone for a 20-yard score, pushing the lead to 13-0 with 18 seconds left in the first quarter. “Matty Reardon, to me he’s Gordie Lockbaum from Holy Cross,” Giglio said. “He does it all, defense, offense, receiving punts; he’s just a fierce competitor. It takes six people to do what he does for us.” “This is just the first of many, the season’s only half way over,” Reardon said. “That’s our mind set, we never give up and we always battle every play. Sadiq draws a lot of attention, so I got to credit him he opens me up. When I get one-on-one coverage Jack and I like to capitalize on that.”
