16TH ANNUAL JERSEY AWARDS SHOWCASES SHORE’S EXCELLENCE

By Mike Ward The last few weeks of a senior’s final year in high school is a time to look back and reflect on the years of hard work and memories one has amassed over the course of their academic career. Many are anxiously looking forward to attending college in the fall, where a completely new environment, new challenges and exciting opportunities await them. For our varsity athletes, the feelings of closing one chapter and starting another are particularly magnified. Many athletes have been competing with the same core group of fellow classmates for most of their lives. This is what makes the Jersey Awards so important. As college awaits many of our athletes, taking the time to honor those who have excelled academically, athletically and in their communities is vital. JSN prides itself on providing a platform where these student athletes can have their achievements highlighted and showcased for all to see. Due to the generous support of all of our sponsors, the Jersey Awards are free to attend for all of our athletes, parents, coaches and administrators. Each awardee receives a beautiful, custom engraved Tiffany ceremonial plate as their trophy. The trophies are accompanied by a custom envelope with the winner’s name calligraphed on the front, illustrated by Peter Murray of Japejuke Calligraphy. The Jersey Awards are unique in their scope of qualifying potential winners. Not only does JSN factor in athletic statistics in their weighing of potential nominees, but a strong focus on academics and community involvement is also placed on the athletes, insuring a well-rounded student athlete is selected to represent their sport for all of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. Held at the Parker House in Sea Girt, the Jersey Awards are a fun and meaningful get-together for athletes, parents and coaches alike. This year, JSN put forward their best slate of winners to date, displaying the best that the Shore has to offer from all corners of the region.

Each recipient of an award throughout the evening has their award presented to them by a coach, parent, or significant role model in their development as a player and a young adult. By allowing the mentors who know these student athletes best to share their experiences with the award winner, the night truly takes on a heartwarming and significant touch. Local businesses and organizations stepped up to the plate in a big way to ensure that the Jersey Awards were a success. Without all of our sponsors, the Jersey Awards would not be able to take place or be anywhere near as special for our student athletes. Our Platinum Sponsors such as Security Benefit, Joe Leone’s, Advisors Mortgage Group, Ray Catena Auto Group, the U.S. Army and our gold sponsors played a key role in making the night a success with their support. Fran Attardi, the Owner and Publisher of JSN, added her thoughts on the significance of the Jersey Awards shortly after the ceremony. “Every year, it’s a challenge to put together this ceremony and I question why I put myself and my staff through this. But then I meet all of these amazing athletes and their families and I can’t wait until the next year’s event. This year was by far one of the most heartwarming ceremonies for me in particular. This amazing group of athletes, parents, coaches and school administrators made me feel like I was the one winning an award with all of their praise and appreciation for the hard work JSN does for their student athletes throughout the school year. Without JSN’s amazing staff, loyal advertisers and awards night sponsors, none of this could be possible.” Some of our award winners and relatives of winners wrote into JSN after the ceremony to thank the paper and our sponsors for putting together the event. Their letters of appreciation can be found throughout this issue. The Jersey Awards is a significant milestone in the careers of our local student athletes, whether it marks the end of their athletic careers or the beginning of their collegiate play. JSN could not thank the parents, coaches and athletic directors enough who help nominate our region’s star players and our sponsors for allowing us to showcase the Jersey Shore’s best and brightest.

I just wanted to let you know my son and I really enjoyed the awards banquette. The Parker House was the perfect venue for the event and it was wonderful to be surrounded by all of the outstanding student athletes. With so much media focus on negative events in the world, I was happy to be part of an event focusing on the hard work and efforts of such a terrific group of senior high school students.
