ADAMS, CORREA AND REYNOLDS LEAD A TALENTED HAWKS LINEUP

Page 3

By Eric Braun

MANCHESTER – Most teams when they finish off a 26win season and a second straight South Jersey Group 2 sectional title find it hard to improve on their success, but the Manchester girls basketball team did just that this offseason. Head coach Dave Beauchemin returns a solid core of players that includes senior forward Dakota Adams, junior guard Kemari Reynolds, junior guard Serenity Anderson, junior guard Nahkaleigh Hayes-Jones and sophomore Destiny Adams. To the excitement of the Hawks faithful, Manchester went from one of the top five teams in the Shore Conference this season to a debate that will be settled on the hardwood as they will challenge Manasquan as the top team at the Shore this year with the addition of one of the top pure shooters in New Jersey with the transfer of senior guard Leilani Correa from Rutgers Prep. “It's been really, really great, especially my teammates‌ coming in as a senior, they welcomed me and took me in right away. I fit in really well,â€? said Correa.â€? They have that fight in them, they’re very talented players, and I love playing with them.â€? Correa joins a backcourt of Reynolds and Adams that will quickly make the Hawks a high-profile offense that will be a nightmare to slow down, not stop, but slow down. Reynolds, who seems to be healthy finally after battling a knee injury, gives Beauchemin great leadership and ball handling to be one of the leaders

this season. Add her return to the talented sophomore in Destiny Adams who burst onto the scene as a freshman and quickly became one of the Hawks leaders. Manchester will bolster one of the best trios of guards in Correa, who averaged 11.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game with Rutgers Prep; Adams who averaged 15 points and 8.7 rebounds; and Reynolds who averaged 12.2 points and 3.3 assists. The Hawks will also have major contributions from returning players Dakota Adams (10.4 ppg, 9.9 rpg), Anderson (5.6 ppg) and Hayes-Jones (6.4 ppg). The Hawks will be looking to bring a state tournament championship to Manchester Township along with the Tournament of Champions title. In order to do so, the Hawks will need to get past Manasquan, to whom they lost in the semifinals last season by 22 points. Also sitting in their way will be St. Rose, Saint John Vianney, Red Bank Catholic and Donovan Catholic. Key dates on their schedule include the WOBM Christmas Classic, where they enter as the top seed and take on Wall Township on Dec. 22, and then hope to play in the finals on Dec. 30. Their league play features key games against Donovan Catholic on Dec. 21 and Jan. 25, and Point Pleasant Boro on Jan 3. Other key contests include Bishop McNamara on Jan. 6, New Hope Academy on Jan. 20, and Long Island Lutheran on Jan. 27.

SJV Girls Basketball A Year Wiser By Eugene Stewart

HOLMDEL – March 5, 2018 was the last game of the 2018 season for the Saint John Vianney girls basketball team in what many programs would consider a good season. Final record for the year, 25-3, with two of the three losses coming in the Shore Conference Tournament final and Non-Public A Championship semifinal – some would recap the season as successful. Two girls averaging double digits over the season – some would be satisfied. Head Coach Dawn Karpell and the Lady Lancers are far from satisfied, far from feeling the 2017-18 season was successful or in anyway content with last year’s record.

per game for the Lady Lancers last season. Dawn Karpell, head coach since the 2006-07 season, has to her credit six Non-Public Group A titles and two T.O.C. championships over the same period, and will look for her seventh and third titles, respectively, this year. In the Shore A Central, SJV has a regular-season schedule which includes contests against Middletown North, Matawan, Wall, Red Bank Regional, Colts Neck, Neptune and Ocean Township. Outof-conference opponents include Staten Island Academy, the Patrick School, St. Johns (DC), University (NJ), Christ the King, Saddle River Day and Long Island Lutheran.

Sajata Bonner, Brelynn Bellamy, Rahmena Henderson and Sarah Karpell, all D1 college commits – the senior foundation of this year’s team – stepped right up and bore responsibility for their “shortcommings” from last year. “We didn’t think about the big picture and got in over our heads,” Bonner offered. “We didn’t remain grounded and giving up is not something we’ll do this year.” SJV lost its leading scorer from last year, Madison Doring (17ppg, 3 assists, 4 steals), and seem very eager to start this season and avenge last year’s losses. The team describes itself as not being restricted into playing specific positions, but as more interchangeable pieces who play multiple positions and each brings something unique to the team. Bonner, a 6-foot senior, G/F, com-

mitted to Quinnipiac, describes herself as a shooter and scorer. Last year for the Lady Lancers, Bonner averaged 15 points per game. The glue holding the team together and not short on words, Bonner speaks of “locking in and focusing on the goal,” which is winning the chip and bringing the hardware back to SJV. The team concept was continually reiterated and the importance of all of her teammates working together for a common goal was made clear. Henderson, a 5-foot-8 senior, PG/ SG, committed to Sam Houston

State, averaged 4.2 points per game as a junior last year, describes herself as a slasher who scores, but also creates opportunities for her teammates by attacking the basket. Spelling PG Karpell, Henderson says she likes to play fast and get everyone involved.

to survey the other team, identify her mission for the contest, then advise her coach, “that’s who I’m guarding” as she focuses on that task. Averaging 6 points, 4 boards, 6 steals and 2 blocks per game, she will score either posting or attacking the basket off the dribble.

Bellamy, a 6-foot senior, committed to William and Mary, defines herself as the “lockdown defender” on her team, who takes on the challenge of checking the opponent’s best player. At the start of each game, Bellamy says she likes

Karpell, the floor general, applauded by her teammates as “the best point guard they’ve ever played with,” looks forward to a long run into March with this year’s squad. The Fordham commit averaged just under 7 points

One of the most storied girls basketball programs in New Jersey, SJV leads the state with seven T.O.C. championships. With such a rich history, the 2018-19 edition seems prepared to uphold that tradition and at least give it one king-sized effort to silence any doubters referencing the incomplete mission from last year. “We also have some young talent no one knows about,” warned Bonner. “Don’t underestimate us.” SJV opened this season with a 77-22 road win over Middletown North. Great win to start the season and as the girls of SJV continue to stress – keep the focus, don’t get caught up in regular season wins and stay together, work together and play together as a team and bring home the chip.

NEW-LOOK ST. ROSE STILL HAS THE SAME GOAL – T.O.C. CHAMPIONSHIP By Mike Ready

BELMAR – The faces change, and the coaches change, but year after year the goal still remains the same for the St. Rose girls basketball program – win its first-ever Tournament of Champions championship. Since 2012, St. Rose has made four appearances on the biggest stage in New Jersey high school basketball but has come home each time without the coveted T.O.C. trophy. Last year, with arguably its finest senior class in program history leading the way, the Purple Roses ran the gauntlet reaching the Tournament of Champions tournament for the first time since 2015 but fell in overtime to defending T.O.C. champion Franklin in the semifinals. From that team – Lucy Thomas (Monmouth University), Mikayla Markham (Columbia University), Elizabeth Marsicano (St. Joseph’s University) and Ariana Dalia (Bates College) – all are playing at the next level after finishing stellar careers at St. Rose last season.

ourselves into the fire hoping we learn quickly.” St. Rose, however, does return four standout players from a year ago that saw quality minutes and were a big part of their success on the court last season. Three seniors, including 5-foot-9 forward Maggie Stapleton (4.4 pts.), guard/forward Sam Mikos (6.1 pts., 3.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists) and West Point commit Lauren Lithgow (9.4 pts., 1.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.2 steals, 44 three-pointers) at shooting guard, will start for Chambers, with Mikos being the only retuning starter. “We have three senior leaders which is helping with the transition,” Chambers said. “Lauren is one of our leaders who can really stretch a defense. Last year she was a great spot-up shooter, but

she’s added to her game and now can also get to the rim, so she’ll be difficult to defend. We also have a lot of other pieces around her that will look to get her the ball or if defenses collapse on her she’ll kick it out to them and they’ll be effective as well.” Sophomore Abigail Antognoli gets the start at point guard this season after a breakout freshman campaign that saw her minutes increase as the season went on before eventually playing a vital role down the stretch. Maureen Stapleton, Maggie’s younger sister, is back after solid freshman season and will see increased playing time this season at the forward spot, while junior Kitty Murphy will see time at guard after getting her feet wet last season as a sophomore.

Thomas finished with 1,620 career points and 1,036 career rebounds while Markham added 1,131 career points and 508 assists. Former AAU coach Mary Beth Chambers, who was expected to take over as head coach last season before the NJSIAA governing body forced her to sit out last year on a technicality, is back to run the program which is again loaded with talent despite its losses from graduation. “I’m excited about the team and we’ve been practicing hard but it’s new to everybody,” Chambers said. “We have new people. We have a lot of players that really didn’t play as much last year because we lost such an amazing senior class that’s obviously not replaceable. “But I like how we’ve been practicing and I like how we’re starting to get to know each other as players and people. Everything’s different from last year, it’s all new from the offense to the defenses to philosophies, and everybody has to get on the same page. So we’re excited for that challenge and we’re throwing

“Maureen’s another versatile player that has a high basketball IQ,” Chambers said. “I think she’s going to really help us this year.” Junior Allison Darcy and freshman Mary Donnelly will add depth off the bench. St. Rose benefits from its reputation as one of the top programs in the state attracting high-end talent seeking the level of competition that St. Rose offers day-in, day-out, along with the superior coaching afforded to them. And, in addition to playing in arguably the toughest conference in the state, St. Rose is known for its brutal out-of-conference schedule that routinely has them competing against top 20 teams in and out of New Jersey.

This season, St. Rose added four transfers to its roster with two of them having already distinguished themselves as bigtime talents and two that will add quality depth to the front court. “As soon as the transfers walked in we welcomed them and hopefully they felt welcomed,” Lithgow said when asked about the team chemistry with so many newcomers. “We all really get along and gel well which is something we’re really proud of. Everyone leads by example and we really lean on each other. If one of us makes a mistake we pick each other up; it’s definitely a family atmosphere.” Junior Brynn Farrell is a legitimate scorer who transferred in from Metuchen after leading the state in scoring two years ago averaging 31.7 points per game. She sat out last season with a broken wrist but is healthy now and should make an immediate impact, with the potential to be one of the top scoring threats in the Shore. Sophomore Makayla Andrews came over from Neptune where she averaged 20.2 points per game as a freshman on the way to being named the Class A North Player of the Year and a first-team All-Freshman selection. Chambers loves Andrews’s versatility and expects her to contribute in a lot of different ways. Donovan Catholic transfer, Layla Laws, a 6-foot sophomore forward, and junior forward Maria Tedesco from Saint John Vianney give St. Rose some added height and toughness underneath with huge upsides. “Right now, we’re just looking at one game at a time and trying to get better with every practice and every game,” said Chambers when asked if this team can make another run to the T.O.C. “So predicting the future is kind of tough but of course that’s where we’d love to end up and if we continue on this path of commitment I think there’s a pretty good chance we’ll definitely compete for that.”

Wishing our athletes and coaches good luck in the upcoming season! 2019 GIRLS BASKETBALL SCHEDULE

Manasquan Looks to Keep Titles Coming By Eugene Stewart

MANASQUAN – As the 2018-2019 winter school sport season begins, the Manasquan girls basketball team begins its quest to prove they are as tough as anyone else they will face and that they can repeat the successes of last year. Opening Dec. 6 against Middletown North, Manasquan started this year as they closed last, with a 53-38 win over the Lions, breaking the seal on the season with a victory. A few of head coach Lisa Kukoda’s Manasquan Warriors joined us at the photo shoot for the Jersey Sporting News 2019 Basketball Preview. I had a chance to chat with the leaders of this year’s Manasquan team and see how they felt about the upcoming season. Senior Faith Masonius, a charismatic speaker and confident player, opened up referring to her team by stating, “We are Warriors so we fight until the end.” Sit back for a peek into the Manasquan’s upcoming season. In just the last decade, the Warriors have come through with six consecutive sectional titles. Dara Mabrey, now a freshman at Virginia Tech, graduated from the program after a very successful 2018 campaign. Her exit leaves big shoes to fill. “Our team is working together and stepping up; we’re looking to fill those shoes” said senior guard Lola Mullaney. Without Mabrey, this year’s team is led by Masonius, a 6-foot guard/forward, playing both facing and with her back to the basket; 5-foot-10 senior guard Mullaney, described as a penetrating scorer with good vision, and 5-foot-6 senior guard Annie Mako, the floor general. All three are respected for their individual talents and skill set; together, they form a solid foundation for one of the top teams if not arguably the top team in New Jersey. Collectively, the triad makes it clear, “It’s not just us, we have underclassmen, specifically freshmen that are going to surprise some people.” “We have a transfer – we’re going to do what we have to do” added Masonius.

Last year’s team, led by Mabrey, knocked off Saint John Vianney in the Shore Conference Tournament, 70-52, in a game played at Monmouth University. This game saw Mullaney drop 12 and Masonius 21 as juniors, with Mabrey adding a game-high 33. Mabrey graduating and taking her talents to Virginia Tech, there are many that follow the sport and the team who are eagerly awaiting the 2019 product.

What’s Trending on Social

“We have some doubters. We look forward to showing them” said Mako. The team speaks of preparing for a very exciting season where they will do a lot of running up and down the court in a more up-tempo offense. “Our motto is ‘one team, one family’ and that’s just how we are,” stated Masonius. “We all get along great and love our coach. She’s both a mother and sister on and off the court.” The triplets of Manasquan are eager to continue to build upon their chapter of Manasquan girls basketball lore. With Masonius averaging 18.8 points, Mullaney 16.0 points and Mako 3.6 points per game, the 70.0 points-per-game average of last year’s team leaves a void to fill if the Warriors are going to successfully defend their titles. With hardware from the Shore Conference Tournament, Central Jersey Group II, NJ State Group II Championship and Tournament of Champions newly placed on the mantle, all eyes are on Manasquan to see what’s next. Adding to Manasquan’s 2019 push is Kate Leturgez, a 5-foot-10 junior transfer from Point Pleasant Boro, where she averaged 11 points per game, shooting 57% from the field in her sophomore season. Manasquan’s regular-season A Central schedule includes games against Shore Regional, Holmdel, Matawan, Monmouth Regional, Raritan, Red Bank Regional, St. Rose, Saint John Vianney, Rumson-Fair Haven and Red Bank Catholic. Manasquan looks to be tested early and often with an early date against Rumson-Fair Haven on the road on Dec. 17. Out of conference opponents for this year include Rancocas Valley, McDonough, Archbishop Wood (PA), Long Island Lutheran and the Patrick School. A strong conference and even tougher out-of-conference schedule will prepare Manasquan to play late into the season and collect even more trophies for Coach Kukoda and the ‘Squan faithful. We know they will again be exciting to watch, fundamentally sound, well coached and eager to defend the T.O.C. crown. Manasquan has grown accustomed to being the hunted and are poised for more.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS HAS RANNEY MOTIVATED

By Eric Braun JSN_Sports JSN_Sports JerseySportingNews.com JerseySportingNews.com TINTON FALLS – The Ranney boys basketball team came within seconds of knocking off Roselle Catholic in the NonPublic B Final a year ago and getting a shot at Don Bosco for the Tournament of Champions title. Since then, the Panthers have been on a collision course to bring home back-to-back B Central and Shore Conference Tournament championships. Most importantly, they have set their sights on the elusive titles they aimed at last year and hope to capture this season – the NJSIAA Non-Public B and Tournament of Champions titles.

Led by McDonald’s All American candidates Scottie Lewis and Bryan Antoine, the Panthers return a talented group of seniors that also includes Alex Klatsky, Chris Autino, Ahmadu Samor and Mike Dettro, as well as the addition of Rumson-Fair Haven transfer Phil Wheeler, and incoming freshman Elijah Perkins. Wheeler gives Ranney an athletic guard that can play multiple positions on the floor and great ball handling. The trio of Lewis, Antoine and Klatsky enter their senior season having already made their college commitments and can now just focus on having fun on the hardwood and taking aim at their team goals. Lewis signed his letter of intent to play for the University of Florida. He is a force on the boards and can hit from anywhere on the floor and defend with the best. Lewis will have one familiar face in Florida, as teammate Klatsky also signed with the Gators. Antoine signed his national letter of intent to continue his playing career at Villanova. All three are incredible leaders on and off the court for Coach Taj Holden, who is in his fourth season with the Panthers. "Most of us are upperclassmen so we've had to take huge steps into being leaders,” said Antoine. “We have 12 guys on the team. Me, Scottie, Alex, Chris and Ahmadu have to be leaders and teach the younger guys. In each level from college to the NBA, you have to be more vocal so that's one thing that we're aiming for."

JerseySportingNe

With Lewis and Antoine being two of the top college recruits in the country, Ranney has been on multiple tournaments’ radar and the Panthers will have their work cut out for them this season to improve on their 28-5 record of a year ago. This season, Holden, who holds a record of 72-14, knows how to handle this pressure, as the Panthers have been in high demand since he took over four years ago. “We’ve been in demand for four years just because people want to come see Scottie and Bryan play,” he said. “I think we have done a good job of scheduling games.” The schedule for the Panthers – ranked #12th in the USA Today Top 25 – has them opening up against Don Bosco Prep, a Christmas event in North Carolina at the John Wall Invitational, a Jan. 12 matchup against Bergen Catholic, a Jan. 21 clash at the Hoop Hall Classic against Federal Way (Washington), a Jan. 27 contest against Gill St. Bernard’s, and a Jan. 30 game with Roselle Catholic. And to top off their non-conference schedule, the Panthers will tip off against No. 1 ranked Montverde Academy (Florida) at the Metro Classic on Feb. 8. Add in Shore Conference foes Asbury Park and Mater Dei Prep, and the Shore Conference Tournament, and the Ranney Panthers will be primed and ready for a deep NJSIAA tournament and Tournament of Champions run to cap off their seniors’ journey. Along the way this season there will be one individual goal that many will be keeping their eye on, as Antoine will attempt to break the Shore Conference all-time scoring record. This record has stood the test of time against some of the top players to ever hit the hardwood in the Shore Conference, and this season Antoine sits just 558 points away from breaking the record that Norman Caldwell set for Croydon Hall Academy back in 1973 with 2,302 points.

DESPITE HEAVY GRADUATION LOSSES, RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN LOOKS TO DEFEND TITLE By Mike Ready

RUMSON – There’s good news and there’s bad news for two-time defending Central Jersey Group II champion Rumson-Fair Haven entering the 2018-19 season.

them that hopefully come together at some point in the season and we can make a run.” O’Connor likes what he sees of this year’s team. “We’re going to be a tough, really physical team. Not just offensively but defensively. We’re going to play aggressively and we won’t back down to anyone. We have a good supporting cast and we’re excited about our young talent this year and as seniors we’re going to help them grow.”

First the bad news: The Bulldogs graduated four integral pieces and lost another to the transfer route off last year’s NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II championship team, including three All-Division players and two sharp-shooting guards that were their primary three-point shooters.

Both O’Connor and McCarthy are penciled in at guard this season with either one of them bringing the ball up court.

All-Division selections Devin Cooper and Elijah McAllister graduated, while All-Division swing man Phillip Wheeler – who was expected back and has an offer from Seton Hall University – transferred to Ranney to play for the No. 13 team in the country.

“We’re going to use those two (O’Connor and McCarthy) as our core and work in some of the guys that got some minutes last year,” Champeau said. “We’re confident that the guys that come up through the system are going to take advantage of their chance to play.”

Three-point shooting specialists Teddy Sourlis and Jack Solano also graduated, leaving the Bulldogs a little thin when it comes to perimeter shooting.

As a sophomore last season, Frankel saw limited court time in nine games with the reason being the three superior senior guards in front of him, including Cooper, Sourlis and Solano.

The good news is: They return second-team All-Shore selection Ian O’Connor – arguably their best player over the last two seasons – along with All-Division pick Jackson McCarthy, both seniors this season.

This season, however, the point guard position is all his and you can expect big things out of this skilled multi-sport athlete, who had a crucial fumble recovery in Rumson’s bowl win.

“Ian and Jackson were my two best players in last year’s playoff run and our leading scorers,” said head coach Chris Champeau. “So, they will be our base. Ian’s pretty much been our MVP the last two years when we won back-to-back championships. We’re going to use those two as our core and work in some of the guys that got some minutes last year. We’re confident that the guys that come up through the system are going to take advantage of their chance to play.

“Drew will start at the point for us,” Champeau said. “He’s a long 6-foot-3 now and a great football player. He has good size and is quick and probably would’ve started last year but Devin came in and took the starting job. A lot of people don’t know about him, but he has great court vision and he’s ready to shine. I see him being one of the best guards in the division.”

“I like what I see,” Champeau added. “We might be a little shaky early but hopefully by mid-January we’re ready to roll.”

Sophomore John Baker, a 6-foot-6 forward/center who dressed varsity last year, appears to have the inside track at one of the frontcourt starting jobs along with the 6-foot-5, 270-pound McCann, who will be playing football at Yale next season.

The 6-foot-4 O’Connor led the Bulldogs in scoring a year ago averaging 15 points a game along with four rebounds. As a sophomore, O’Connor lead the team in rebounds grabbing 154 boards, but last season it was the 6-foot-7 shot-blocking specialist McAllister who controlled the paint, averaging 10.15 boards a game – good for third in the Shore Conference. With McAllister now playing football for Vanderbilt University, you can expect to see double-digit rebounds out of the extremely athletic and powerful O’Connor and don’t seem surprise if you see his scoring average approach the 20-points-per-game mark. If he can do that, he’ll easily eclipse the 1000-point mark for his career. A 20-10 season is not out of the question for the gifted O’Connor, who’s already committed to Lehigh University for football as a tight end. “Ian’s the heart and soul of the program,” said Champeau of his star player. “He’s one of the top three guys I’ve ever coached and the toughest kid I’ve ever had. He’s one of those guys that make you feel like you made the right decision in becoming a coach. He does everything you ask of him. He’s humble, unselfish and he’s just tough. He’s the type of kid every coach in the Shore would want to have.”

O’Connor and several other athletes on the basketball team, including McCarthy, Drew Frankel, Ryan McCann and Tim Kelly just recently helped lead the Bulldogs football team to their fifth sectional title in six years and a victory in the first-ever Central-South Bowl game. Speaking of McCarthy, he had the game-winning touchdown in the Bulldogs’ bowl win and he’s coming off a breakout junior campaign that saw him average 10 points and four boards a game. “Jackson was arguably our best offensive player down the stretch last year,” said Champeau. “He’s a rangy 6-foot-5 guard that jumps out of the gym. He’s getting some D1 looks now and had a big summer. He can knock down the three’s and people have trouble staying in front of him. He’s another kid that’s tough and will dive on the floor. “Between those two that’s a pretty tough combo,” Champeau added. “So, we have two D1 athletes anchoring a bunch of guys around

“Baker’s a skilled big man who’s going to be a good player for us,” Champeau said. “Ryan’s another big body who will see minutes, so I could roll out a group where the smallest guy is 6-foot-3. And we have a bunch of sophomore guards that are fast and quick, so we could be two different Rumson teams this year built around Ian, Jackson and Frankel.” Senior Cole Staisel is also in the mix in the guard rotation after seeing limited minutes on the court last season. Champeau mentioned sophomore guards Ryan Ruane and Jackson Patton and juniors Dutch Donlon, Hunter Reid and Jack Carroll as potential candidates for increased playing time as well. “Everyone’s jumped off the band wagon already,” said Champeau. “We love being the underdog. We’ve won back-to-back state titles and haven’t lost a division game in three years but people are writing us off already, which is fine. We lost a lot to graduation and Wheeler transferred, but we’re ready, we’re fine, we like this position. Forget about us, good, we’ll see you in February. For us it’s the same old thing – stay humble, stay hungry.”

CLASS B NORTH FAVORITE CBA RETURNS THREE KEY PIECES TO THE LINEUP Mike Ready

LINCROFT – With two All-Shore players and an All-Division guard back this season, the Colts appear primed to make a run at both the Shore Conference and NJSIAA Non-Public A Tournament titles this season.

the three spot (swing) and Cohen in the middle at center. However, for the Colts to get to where they aspire to get, they’ll need some contributions from a group of talented but raw newcomers with two of them stepping into starting positions.

Leading the way is 6-foot-11 center Josh Cohen, who added two inches to his frame since last season and just committed to St. Francis University. The athletic big man made a name for himself a year ago with his aggressive style of play underneath the basket and his ability to score from anywhere on the court.

Cohen, nonetheless, likes what he sees and expects the cast of newbies to develop into primetime players as the season unfolds and their roles become more defined. “We have a freshman, Ryan Mabrey, and a couple of sophomores, Mike White and Colin Farrell, and seniors Peyton Boesch and Paul Waraska, to come in and fill some roles,” said Cohen. “They can all run the floor and shoot, and we expect them to pick up the slack of Rob (Mahala) and Nolan (Madden).”

Cohen averaged 15.8 points and 10.8 rebounds as a junior when he was a third-team All-Shore selection but feels the Colts have some unfinished business to take care of this season. In last year’s NJSIAA Non-Public, South A Tournament the Colts were upset by rival Red Bank Catholic as the No. 2 seed.

Mabrey, who comes from a family of basketball royalty, is the youngest brother of former CBA and St. Anselm standout, Roy; former Notre Dame starting guard, Michaela; current Notre Dame star, Marina; and current Virginia Tech standout freshman guard, Dara.

The Colts beat the Caseys twice during the regular season and Red Bank Catholic hadn’t defeated a CBA team since the 1989 NJSIAA Tournament, so it was a tough loss for them to absorb. “It was tough to lose to our rival RBC and end our season that way,” Cohen said. “But we rebuilt a little bit this season and regrouped, so we should be good to go.”

He’ll jump right in at the starting point guard spot as a freshman for the Colts and don’t expect him to be intimidated as he’s been in the limelight ever since he first laced up his sneakers and took to the hardwood floor.

The Colts do have to replace two big-time contributors in guard Rob Mahala (9.8 pts.) and forward Nolan Maddon (5.5 pts.) but with the return of starting guards Stephen Braunstein and Liam Kennedy, who were both recipients of post-season honors, the backcourt stands up against any in the Shore. The 6-foot-1 Braunstein can do it all. He averaged 16.3 points and 3.8 rebounds while dishing out 2.3 assists per game to go along with his 1.6 steals per contest and 34 three-pointers on his way to being named second-team AllShore.

Boesch and White will rotate at the four spot to start the season with Waraska and Farrell adding depth off the bench at guard.

“Josh and I are going to carry a lot of the scoring load and we have a couple of newcomers who are going to be in the starting lineup,” Braunstein said. “Liam’s a good scorer too but he’s also very good at passing the ball.”

Kennedy – a first-team All-Division pick – led the Colts with 3.5 assists per game to complement his 10.4 points per game average and is penciled in at the number two spot (shooting guard) in the Colts starting lineup, while Braunstein will start at

“It’s good,” said Cohen when asked about the team’s chemistry. “We have some newcomers, so it can be hard getting them acclimated and to know our plays. But me, Steve and Liam have kind of taken on the leadership role showing them our offensive sets and walking them through all the different rotations on defense, so it’s been a little tough, but we’re getting it together and we should be good to go for our first game.”

MARINERS LOOK TO CONTINUE THEIR DOMINANCE By Eric Braun

TOMS RIVER – The 2018 season was another banner year for the Toms River North Mariners boys basketball team, finishing 25-5 and a fourth consecutive A South championship in which they finished 16-0. The Mariners will look to make a deeper run into the Shore Conference Tournament and South Jersey Group 4 Tournament. Last season they fell to eventual champion Ranney in the quarterfinals of the SCT and lost to Atlantic City in the semifinals of the SJ Group 4 tournament. “Obviously we lost some experience and scoring from last season’s very successful team but we do not expect to drop off and can see us being better with the emergence of a very talented junior class who already have a ton of varsity experience,” said head coach Rory Caswell, when asked about this season’s expectations. Toms River North returns four players that played major roles in last season’s success, led by their two seniors, Nick Dunczak and Ryan Schlosser. The Mariners will also lean on their talented junior class that returns Najea Hallenbeck, Colin Baker, Jakari Spence and Mike Vansprang. Caswell will also have the services of top newcomers in seniors Aaron Craig and Will March, junior Jarrod Pruitt and sophomores Jake Kazanowsky and Zack Browne. The veteran leadership of 6-foot-5 forward Dunczak (6 ppg), 6-foot-6 forward Hallenbeck (8 ppg, 7 rpg),

6-foot-2 guard Baker (3 ppg) and 5-foot-10 guard Spence (8 ppg, 5apg), all of whom are three-year varsity letter winners, will look to keep the level of success Toms River North has earned over the years going. In addition, the Mariners return 6-foot-5 junior guard Vansprang, who will likely be the fifth starter, and will handle the ball a lot at the point guard position to allow Spence and Baker opportunities to get down the floor. Schlosser, a 6-foot-2 guard, will be the sixth man and is a quick slashing guard who will play all three guard positions.

YOUR LOCAL SPORTS SOURCE

The Mariners’ depth will allow them to be versatile in the way they want to play this season. They can go with a long and big lineup. They can play a large zone with three players at 6-foot-5 plus in the back line, or they can use their athletic depth, which will allow them to play five long athletes, as well as full court press when needed, Caswell noted. “We believe this team has a very high ceiling because of our overall size, length and skill set,” Caswell added. The Mariners opened the season against St. Augustine on Dec. 15, then dive right into their A South divisional games with Brick Township and Toms River South to close out the 2018 calendar year. Toms River North will look to extend their 46-consecutivegame win streak over their A South opponents, dating back to 2015.
