2019 TOMS RIVER NORTH FOOTBALL PREVIEW: READY TO ROCK By Mike Ready
TOMS RIVER – In 2015, Toms River North (11-1) beat Williamstown to capture the NJSIAA South Jersey Group V championship for its sixth state championship in program history.
year with All-Division players returning at all levels: line, linebacker and secondary. All-Division weakside end, senior C.J. Niedzielski (5-foot-11, 240 pounds) wreaks havoc along the line. He recorded 65 tackles and 5.5 sacks last season and returns as one of the top defensive lineman in the Shore.
A year later, most expected a seventh state title, but the Mariners, who entered the final undefeated at 11-0, were upset by Millville, 22-16, in one of the most heartbreaking losses in Mariners history.
“The defense is looking strong, said Niedzielski. “Every year we just look to get better. We’re on top of our game, very focused and very disciplined.
At that time, Toms River North was regarded as one of, if not the, premier public school programs in New Jersey.
Senior Myron Ford (5-foot-10, 240 pounds) gets the start at the other end spot opposite Niedzielski while Hollenbeck will be plugging the middle with his immense frame from the nose tackle position.
The following season though, with most of the players from arguably the greatest senior class in Mariners history having graduated, Toms River North slipped to 1-9 as head coach Dave Oizerowitz began the process of rebuilding the storied program with a new group of eager underclassmen. In 2018, the Mariners improved to 6-3 with their only two losses in the regular season coming by a combined three points. They returned to the playoffs, but a 33-0 loss to Vineland in the first round was a lesson learned for Oizerowitz’s young team and they left the field knowing they still had some work to do. “We just keep going at it every day, trying to get better, said junior quarterback Jake Kazanowsky, who had a break-out sophomore campaign when he passed for 1,437 yards and 18 touchdowns with only two interception on the way to being named thirdteam All-Shore. We know our schedule is looking tough but we keep grinding every day, going harder and improving each day.
at running back and wide receiver, but the success of this year’s team ultimately rests on his shoulders and he’s good with that. “The team believes in me and I’m feeling a lot more confident, said Kazonowsky. “I’m a lot more confident in my throws with a year of training at quarterback. It’s easier to make my reads and I’m feeling good about the season.
With the division realignment in the Shore Conference, there’s a strong possibility that all six teams, including the Mariners, in the American Division will be ranked in the preseason Top 10.
One of those weapons is second-team All-Shore running back Jarrod Pruit, who returns after a stellar junior season which saw him rush for 945 yards and 13 touchdowns. Like most top running backs, Pruit isn’t satisfied with what he’s already accomplished.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Kazonowsky definitely has weapons at his disposal
“Hopefully I’ll be better this year, said Pruit. “Last year was okay but I feel this
year I can be a lot better; I got a lot to prove. Speedster Jordan Grey (5-foot-9, 160 pounds), who runs a 4.5 40-yard dash, also returns in the backfield giving the Mariners an exciting one-two punch. Kazonowsky will also have his main target back, 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior Dominick Jacobs, to throw to again this season. Jacobs was a second-team AllShore selection last season after averaging 23.3 yards per catch in recording 19 receptions for 443 yards and five touchdowns. Junior wide receivers Zach Goodale, who Oizerowitz raves about, and Jordan Grey are also back and familiar targets for Kazonowsky after productive sophomore seasons.
The Mariners offensive line is anchored by massive 6-foot-7, 300-pound Najae Hollenback, who holds offers from Rutgers, UMass and Central Michigan at left tackle. Senior Cross Conlin (6-foot1, 250 pounds) is back at left guard, as is junior Jamie Hans (6-foot-1, 220 pounds) at right guard. Seniors John Muller (6-foot, 205 pounds) and Frank Davis (5-foot-10, 210 pounds) are battling it out for the starting center job. Both players have game experience and will be in the offensive line rotation no matter who starts. At right tackle, junior Jaden Schlosser (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) steps in with high expectations with Richie Lopez backing up. Defensively, the Mariners allowed just 12.3 points per game a year ago and they should be in the same ballpark this
At linebacker, All-Division selection Vinnie Pallmieri, the undisputed leader of the defense, returns to the middle after recording 100 tackles a year ago as a junior. He’s a relentless tackling machine with non-stop energy that plays sideline-to-sideline. Senior Justin Burkert (5-foot-9, 160 pounds) – a transfer from Jackson Memorial, junior C.J. Felton (6-foot, 180 pounds) and rising freshman Cody VanderVliet (6-foot, 180 pounds) round out the linebacker corps. The secondary is experienced and deep with All-Division senior Ray Carlson (5-foot-10, 160 pounds) heading up the group. Carlson led the team with four interceptions a year ago and has all the markings of a shutdown corner this season. Grey, Pruit, Goodale and senior Sergio Borda (5-foot-9, 155 pounds) are all high-end players giving the Mariners one of the top secondaries in the Shore. “Going 1-9, nobody ever wanted that again, said Niedzielski. “Last year we really pushed things up with a 6-2 season and a playoff berth. So, hopefully we can build on that and climb up that Shore Conference ladder and hopefully win a state title this year. Toms River North football is back.

Shore Conference Girls Soccer Loaded With Talent Headed into 2019 Season By Eric Braun
Shore Conference girls soccer is coming off a successful 2018 season where seven teams (Shore Regional, Point Pleasant Beach, Matawan, Brick Township, Middletown North, St. Rose and Trinity Hall) made their respective NJSIAA Sectional Group finals with four of them (Shore, Brick, Middletown North and St. Rose) capturing their championship hardware. The following four teams all earned their NJSIAA championship crowns a year ago, along with Toms River North, which captured the Shore Conference Tournament championship over Red Bank Catholic. As many great players and coaches know however, once you raise that championship trophy you are now the hunted and team to beat. Shore Regional, which defeated Point Pleasant Beach, 2-0, in the Group 1 final before falling to Audubon, 2-1, in the Group 1 championship game, has been a dominant force over the past seven seasons. The model of excellence for many programs at the Shore Conference, coach George Moutis continued to plug in player after player due to graduations and injuries. This season the Blue Devils will look to reload once again following their 17-6 record a year ago and loss of Shore Conference leading goal scorer Frankie McDonough (23). Leading the way will be senior Julia Eichenbaum, who was second in scoring to with 22 goals. Another constant fixture for Shore Regional has been the stellar play in goal over the seven-year run, and this season the Blue Devils look to sophomore Parker Grimm, who made six appearances last season making 24 saves. Brick Township finally broke through to championship glory last season with a dramatic weather-filled, penalty kick shootout victory over Hopewell Valley for their first title in 22 years. The Dragons return a host of talent this season with their dynamic duo of Reese Beggs and Abby Kennelly returning with their combined 28 goals and 16 assists from last season. Tierney Garkowski returns to anchor the defense that allowed just 27 goals last season. The Dragons will get a new face in goal after the graduation of Molly Tully. Brick Township will look to take control of the always tough A South division but will have plenty of competition from Toms River North, Toms River South and Jackson Memorial. Middletown North was the team to beat all season long last year and they just about conquered all their goals for the season. The Lions finished 2018 with a record of 21-2, capturing B North with a 7-0 mark, fell short of the Shore Conference title, losing to Toms River North, 2-1, in the semifinal; regrouped and captured their first Sectional title since 2005 with a 3-1 victory over Cranford before falling in their final game of the season in a heartbreaker to perennial power Northern Highlands, 1-0, in the Group 3 final. The Lions are primed for another run, returning 32 goals from their offensive workhorses in Darien Rinn and Ashley Dietrich. Where the Lions will feel the biggest change is in net where they lost the veteran leadership and production from Hailey Martin who graduated last year with four years of play that included 517 career saves. St. Rose, always a constant threat at the Shore Conference level, made its mark at the state level last season capturing its first Sectional title since 2010. The Purple Roses pounded on their younger B Central opponents finishing 15-3 overall and 5-0 in division play, outscoring the opponents, 28-2. This season St. Rose returns the always dangerous Julianne Leskauskas, who on her high school career has 50 goals and 17 assists. Leskauskas, along with Caroline Caputo and Gabrielle Hueth, will lead another high-powered offense that returns with 47 combined goals.
Girls Soccer Previews & Predictions: A North will be loaded with talent once again this season with the return of eight players from the All Conference team a year ago in Victoria Tzitzis and Alexandra O’Hare from Marlboro, Briana Ramirez from Manalapan, Ryann Leohner and Anna Priborkina from Freehold Township, Madison Grayson from Long Branch, Caitlin Gresko from Howell and Gabriella Casale from Freehold Boro. Freehold Township, always tough in any contest, looks to build on its 14-win season with the return of Leohner and Priborkina, who combined for 17 goals last season. Middletown South and Howell will both be looking to challenge Freehold Township for the top spot in the division with the return of many younger players on both squads that saw valuable playing time a year ago. South comes off an 8-9-4 season and returns its leading scorers in Emma Laudisi and Katie Coyle, who combined for 22 goals. Howell enters on the heels of a 4-12 record that does not represent the effort and work ethic the Rebels have. Look for the Rebels to be focused and tighter as a group this season and turn some heads. Prediction: Middletown South A Central, from top to bottom was tough game all last season and 2019 should be no different. Red Bank Catholic
will have some holes to fill losing a lot to graduation, but the Caseys return their leading scorer from a year ago in Morgan Cupo. Cupo, now a sophomore, will need to be the veteran leader on offense and off the field, but something tells me from watching her last season she will have no problem with that task. Shore Regional will be another strong team this season. Eichenbaum has plenty of big game experience and will look to continue the high-powered offense we have come to watch from Shore Regional over the years. Never count out the Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs who every year seem to be the team no one talks about and yet is always in the mix. This season they will not be so quiet as they return their top three leading goal scorers in Ellen Daly, Morgan Hobson and Chase Boyle. Prediction: Shore Regional A South, also known as the black and blue division, will once again be one of the hardest divisions. Toms River North and Brick Township will once again be the teams to beat, with Jackson Memorial and Toms River South closing in on them. North turned many heads late last season, knocking off heavily favored Middletown North in the Shore Conference Tournament semifinal and then capturing the championship against Red Bank Catholic. This season coach Tom Miller has another strong lineup with the returning leadership of Alexa Peto, Emily Royson and Paige Farley. Brick Township returns their potent offense of Beggs and Kennelly and will once again be competing for another section title as well as Shore Conference and state titles. Jackson Memorial and Toms River South will both be in the mix thanks in large part to their younger lineups that faced plenty of experience last season. Keep an eye on the Indians’ Rylee Spakowski, Shayla Scully and Hannah Olexa who return to the offense with a combined 11 goals and 15 assists. For Jackson Memorial, Jessica Wanzor, Jessica Smink, Natalie Knauf and Krista Louro will be leaned on heavily from coach Sean Bayha to get the Jags back to the top of the division. Prediction… Toms River North B North should once again go through Middletown North with the Lions returning a solid core of both offensive and defensive players. The key question for North will be the void left in goal. Matawan might be poised to take a run at the Lions this season after a successful 2018 campaign that saw the Huskies make it to the Central Jersey Group 2 final, losing to powerhouse Governor Livingston, 2-1. The Huskies return one of the top keepers in the Shore in senior Kelly Lambertson, who sits at 333 saves for her high school career. Prediction… Middletown North B Central had strong representation at the state level last season in St. Rose, Trinity Hall and Point Pleasant Beach and will look to continue their runs again this season. St. Rose was the lone state sectional winner knocking off Trinity Hall in a tough 1-0 contest. The Purple Roses return a bulk of their lineup highlighted by Rutgers commit Leskauskas who finished second in scoring with 22 goals behind Shore’s McDonough. Add another year of experience and togetherness and this year’s team should be competing for Shore Conference Tournament and NonPublic titles. On St. Rose’s heels and eager to get to work this season is Point Pleasant Beach, which finished last season with a record of 17-3 and lost to Shore Regional in the Central Jersey Group 1 final, 2-0. The Garnet Gulls return one of the toughest offensive lineups at the Shore in Abby Angelucci, Emma Acanfora and Sarah Shwahia, who combined for 46 goals 31 assists. Prediction… St. Rose B South was in a rebuild year last season as several teams, after successful 2017 campaigns, came back to the pack. Look for Pinelands and Point Pleasant Boro to be the front-runners to battle for the division. Pinelands will be led by the school’s all-time leading scorer, senior Aileen Cahill with 59 career goals, and Sunni DiElmo with nine goals and nine assists last season. Goalkeeper Brenna DeVoe will be the anchor for the Wildcats once again, returning off a 100-save season and 370 for her career. Point Boro will look to get back to championship form and will lean on their defensive leader in Megan Feehan. The Panthers offensively will rely on junior Heather Van Deventer who returns with 11 goals and 10 assists a year ago. Prediction… Pinelands

Field Hockey: Four Team Race Headlines Shore Conference By Eric Braun
Another year and more of the same for the projected field of Shore Conference field hockey powers RumsonFair Haven and Shore Regional. However, the two will have tough competition come at them from Southern Regional and Point Pleasant Boro.
scorer in Lynne Walenjus. Also returning is four-year starter Mia Kepler in goal. Ocean Township could be the surprise team from last year that takes another step forward this year and brings the Spartans back to championship form. The Spartans will rely on the offensive production of Taylor Cerafice, Julia Morales, Allison Stuppi and Olivia Wnorowski, along with the stellar play of junior keeper Alexandra Ankiweicz. Pre-
For the fifth time in a row, Rumson-Fair Haven is the reigning Shore Conference Tournament champions and primed for a sixth title run. The Bulldogs lost production of 72 goals from a year ago and will rely on Meadow Maguire and Sarah MacGillis to continue their offensive production. Defensively, the Bulldogs will be sound once again and led by goaltender Cecilia Newman. RFH will look to add to their Shore Conference Tournament titles as well as finish the deal this season in South Jersey Group 2, where last year they lost to West Essex in the semifinal.
diction… Wall Township
B Central was a two-team race last season with Henry Hudson taking the division at 10-0 and St. Rose second at 8-2. Nothing seems to have changed this season with both returning a number of key contributors from a year ago. Henry Hudson amazingly returns their entire roster from last year including Cece Crowther, Holly Diovisalvi, Charlotte Bigotto and Alyssa Curry on offense and third-year starting goalie Genevive Keelan, who has 112 saves in her career. St. Rose returns Haile Pannkuk, Olivia Peters and Olivia Mastrocola to lead their offense that went from 104 goals in 2017 to 169 in 2018. Prediction… Henry Hudson

A North looks to be wide open this year with Middletown
A Central will most certainly be the toughest division all season long as it boasts the top two teams at the Shore and state – Shore Regional and Rumson-Fair Haven. But also look for Manasquan and Red Bank Catholic to take a step forward this year. Manasquan ran out one
Pleasant Boro
A South looks to be Southern Regional’s division to lose. No disrespect to the other talent in the division, but the Rams return the bulk of their offense, defense and goalkeeper Lauren Bakker. Jackson Memorial was the lone team to knock off Southern last season and finished 11-2-1 in division. The Jags return several key players to their offense in Claudia DiStaso, Abigail Reist and Sara Floyd. They also return keeper Mildred Trembley who finished with 74 saves last season and has 227 for her career. Prediction… Southern Regional

Field Hockey Previews and Predictions:
Prediction… Middletown South
of the youngest rosters in the division last year and the experience should pay off for the Warriors. Red Bank Catholic lost a number of players to graduation but this is a program that is consistently in the mix. They return their triple threat on offense of Shannon Tringola, Gabrie Goehring and Julianne Kopec who combined for 39 goals last season. Prediction… Shore Regional
Maeve Hierholzer
Along with Southern Regional, look for Point Pleasant Boro to push the top two teams this season and compete for the reign at the Shore. The Panthers lost several players to graduation but will look to continue their winning formula that saw them go 21-2 last season. They will look to ride the hot offensive production from the trio of Jordan Carr, Heather Kimak and Cassie Campbell, who combined for 67 goals and 35 assists.
South looking to continue its dominance from a year ago. Last season the Eagles went 12-0 and return a potent trio on offense in Lia Simoniello, Gianna Racioppi and Kelsey O’Keefe. Looking to dethrone the Eagles will be Freehold Township, which returns Emma Butrym, Avery Drechsler, Chloe Rattiner and Paulina Caramanno. The Patriots battled the Eagles in two tightly contested games last season but dropped both affairs. It will be the depth of Freehold Township that got plenty of experience last season that could get them on top this season. Also looking to get back to championship form will be Colts Neck which finished at 7-4-1 in division last season. It will be the veteran Stephanie LoNano in net for the Cougars who will look to go out on top her senior season. Offensively, Colts Neck will rely on Isabella Ferrandino, Bella Rivero and Jessica Thesing.
Maitland Demand
Southern Regional continues to draw the eye of Shore Conference field hockey to the small knit community in Manahawkin. The Rams year in and year out continue to put up winning seasons and this year looks to be no different. Southern brings back their two big scorers from last year in Maitland Demand and Erika Barbera, a duo that combined for 46 gols and 20 assists. Lauren Baker returns for another season between the pipes for the Rams. Look for the Rams to jump on their opponents early and gear up for another run at the Shore Conference and South Jersey Group 4 titles.
B South saw Point Pleasant Boro run away with the division last season, but it should be a tighter race this season with Pinelands and Jackson Liberty right behind them. The Wildcats return a large portion of the offense from a year ago that includes Adrian Diekman and Jamilyn Hawkins. Pinelands is a year removed from division champs and looks to have enough talent and veterans to compete for another title. Jackson Liberty played constant ball last season but lost a number of starters to graduation. The Lions will look to rebuild and reload and rely on leading scorer Natalie Wood and Samantha Granza to lead the way. Prediction… Point
Lily Santi
Shore Regional, no stranger to postseason success, was the lone Shore Conference team to capture their Group State title last season with a 2-1 win over Haddonfield in the Group 1 final. The Blue Devils will have very little let down coming into this season having lost only six seniors from last year. They return leading goal scorer Lily Santi, along with Taylor Cannon, Ryan Malfa, Isabella Sapanaro, Libby Doehner and Tiernan McLaughlin. These six players return offensive production of 98 goals. Rachel Dwyer returns between the pipes with 39 saves a year ago and 96 for her high school career.

2019 LONG BRANCH FOOTBALL: IS THERE ENOUGH LEFT IN THE TANK FOR A THREE-PEAT? By Mike Ready
Starks (6-foot, 200 pounds) will also be in the line rotation.
LONG BRANCH – In any sport, one of the most difficult feats for a team to achieve is to repeat as champions.
On defense, senior defensive end Jayson Glasper (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) returns after leading the Green Wave in sacks last season with eight – seventh in the Shore Conference – along with 60 tackles. While only playing in eight games last season and surrounded with All-Shore talent, Glasper, also a track standout in the hurdles, was somewhat overlooked. However, you can count on him being noticed this season as he continues to evolve into one of top defensive lineman in the Shore.
The Green Wave already checked off that box last season when they defeated Brick, 21-14, to capture their second straight Central Jersey Group IV sectional championship before beating Shawnee, 20-17, in the first-ever NJSIAA South, Group IV Bowl game. Now, entering the 2019 season, Long Branch is faced with quite a few challenges if they are to win their third state sectional title in a row after sustaining heavy graduation losses, including firstteam All-Shore representatives at quarterback, wide receiver, offensive/defensive line, linebacker and defensive back.
Taylor will be at one defensive tackle spot with Guidetti and Figueroa rotating at the other. Telles and Starks could work themselves into the rotation as well.
Also, with the Shore Conference’s new annual realignment policy, the Green Wave were moved into the American Division, which is without a doubt the toughest division in the Shore Conference this year. The American Division features six of the Shore Conference’s most successful programs over the last nine years. Along with Long Branch, Manalapan, Middletown South, Red Bank Catholic, Rumson-Fair Haven and Toms River South make up the division. Each of these programs has won at least one or multiple state championships since 2010. However, there are quite a few positives for the Green Wave as they begin their title defense and that starts with firstteam All-State running back Jermaine Corbett who is entering his senior year. Corbett, an elusive runner with tremendous vision can also bowl you over with his deceiving power. He led the state in rushing with 2,021 yards, including two 300-plus rushing-yard games, and 25 touchdowns. With soft hands, Corbett is also a major threat out of the backfield after catching 19 passes for 220 yards and four touchdowns. Junior Bobby Lawrence, a starting linebacker, gets the nod at fullback when
“We’re going to be a fast physical team,” said Taylor. “We have the same expectations as last year – stop other teams from scoring.”
the Green Wave are in a two-back offensive set and senior linebacker Jah’Kwan Gordon, who averaged 12.3 yards per carry in only eight carries with a touchdown last year should get some additional rushing attempts as the perfect change of pace option. Junior Karon Laws will be in the backfield mix, too. That’s the good news. The bad news for Long Branch is they need to replace All-Shore quarterback Marc Dennis which will be no easy task. However, early returns from preseason camp and scrimmages seem to suggest they’ve found his replacement. Seniors Nick Tracy and California transfer Kyle Davidson have been waging a tight quarterback battle and both have had strong preseason camps, with a slight edge going to the 6-foot, 190-pound Davidson, who was a starter last year at Berean Christian in Wal-
nut Creek, CA, where he led his team to the conference final. Davidson, whose older brother Kevin is the starting quarterback at Princeton University, is a strong-armed pocketpasser with unlimited range and accuracy. He can let it rip while also being accurate at short and intermediate range. Junior wide receiver Jayon Farrar had a breakout sophomore campaign when he had 16 receptions for 257 yards and three touchdowns playing in the shadow of All-Shore receiver Matt Clarke. He’s the number one guy this season and is primed to put up some big numbers. Seniors J.J. Sherin (5-foot-11, 170 pounds) and Earnest Reevey (6-foot-1, 175 pounds) are athletic and fast and have been waiting in the wings to showcase their talents. They’re penciled in
as the second and third option at wide receiver. Sophomore transfer Basean Fraser (6-foot, 175 pounds) and Jayden Farmer (6-foot-1, 175 pounds) are both in the wide receiver mix as well. Senior Lucas Telles (6-foot, 180 pounds) returns at tight end and sophomore Jayson Pressley (6-foot, 170 pounds) will get reps there, too. Second-team All-Shore selection Tracy Taylor (6-foot, 225 pounds) moves to center this season as the only returning starter and will anchor the offensive line which is undergoing some reconstruction but has looked solid in the preseason. Seniors Matt Guidetti (6-foot-1, 260 pounds) and Vincent Mandica (6-foot, 220 pounds) take over at the tackle spots, while senior Miguel Figueroa (6foot, 280 pounds) and junior Andrew Conklin are the guards. Senior Sean
Gordon returns to lead a young, but very capable group of linebackers. Gordon is coming off a stellar junior campaign in which he recorded 44 tackles and two sacks and returned an interception and fumble recovery for scores. Juniors Conklin, Lawrence and Dave Rodriguez make up the linebacker rotation. Corbett will see double-duty again this season and will be back at strong safety where he had one interception and 22 tackles there a year ago. Sophomore Chris Rodriguez earned the starting free safety spot with a strong camp and is a nice addition to the secondary. Farmer is another sophomore who impressed in preseason camp and won the starting cornerback job opposite Sherin. Reevey and Fraser are also in the secondary rotation. “We want to be a better team than last year,” said Taylor. “Two’s good but three would be great. No Long Branch team has ever done that before.”

2019 RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN FOOTBALL PREVIEW: RELOAD, NO PROBLEM By Mike Ready
RUMSON – Coming off a season in which the they won their fifth sectional title in six years and then defeated Woodrow Wilson in the first-ever NJSIAA South, Group III Bowl game, the Bulldogs have no plans of letting up despite graduating a number of key players.
“Joey Calabrese is a rising senior who’s an animal in the weight room and is strong and fast so he’ll be ready to rock,” said Frankel. “Then there’s Agnello Pane, who is a junior and could’ve started last year. He’s a fantastic, long, 6-foot-3 cornerback who plays very physically and comes down hill to light kids up. So I think on the edges we’re looking pretty good.”
Having to reload is nothing new for the Bulldogs, who year after year have made a habit of drawing from a seemingly endless pipeline of raw home-grown talent that almost magically transform into high-end starters to fill areas of need.
There is a chance Frankel will see time at cornerback at some point season with senior Tyler Prendergast and sophomore John Lista getting some work at safety depending on how things shake out.
The Bulldogs have over 100 players participating in preseason camp not including freshmen, and you can be assured that out of those 100 student-athletes RFH head coach Jerry Schulte will find the players capable of stepping in and stepping up as they have in years past.
Senior Gordon Forsyth (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) is back to head up the linebacker corps in the middle after a solid season a year ago when he recorded 50 tackles and four sacks. He’ll be joined by a couple of newcomers in junior Tom Swaim (6-foot, 190 pounds) and senior Liam Horan (5-foot-10, 190 pounds).
Not that the cupboard is bare for the Bulldogs entering the 2019 season; its’ not, and it’s really not that much different from any other year. But when you lose two premier linebackers and a stud defensive lineman, arguably the best running back and tight end in the Shore and a dominant offensive lineman that were all first-team All-Shore selections – just to name a few – it might seem that way.
Junior James Smith (6-foot-3, 255 pounds), senior Kirt Yarbough (6-foot-3, 250) and sophomore Christian Smith (6foot, 225 pounds) appear to be the front runners for starting spots.
Defensively, the Bulldogs quite possibly possess the top safety tandem in the Shore Conference with seniors Drew Frankel (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) and Ryan Ruane (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) – who recently picked up an offer from UMass.
“Our coach preaches to us that this is a program not a team,” said Coles. “We have created some great teams over the years but we reload every single time and honestly I think the backbone of that has to be weight room and strength and conditioning coach Rob Orrok. He’s really unique for this area. He just lives and breathes to teach us how to get bigger and better and faster and stronger. He works tirelessly to make sure we’re in the weight room learning discipline and accountability and beyond that just making us better football players.”
Ruane recorded 64 tackles with three interceptions last season while Frankel – a three-year starter – posted 50 tackles and recovered a fumble.
With the Shore Conference division realignment, the Bulldogs were placed in arguably the toughest division in the conference – the American Division – with five of six members a lock to be included in preseason Top 10 polls.
The Bulldogs will have two new starters at cornerback, but Frankel has nothing but high praise for them.
The Bulldogs travel to Red Bank Catholic for the season opener on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.

“We did have an all senior class on the offensive line last year which is unfortunate for us this year,” Coles said. “But at the same time we had a lot of guys underneath them learning and striving for their spots so I think we’re going to fill in nicely and I don’t think we should be to worried about it.”
Senior Patrick Jamin (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) returns at wide receiver and is expected to be Coles’ main target this season after recording nine catches for 109 yards and a touchdown a year ago. Jamin had a huge third-down catch for a critical first down in the Bulldogs’ win over Woodrow Wilson. Converted quarterback Patrick Harmon (6-foot-1, 190 pounds) steps into the big wide receiver role on the weak side.
There may be a lot of new faces on the field for Rumson this season, but you can be rest assured those new players will be up to the task.

“Crowley had a great year last year creating holes for running back Alex Maldjian doing his job,” Coles said. “Pete has probably been the most consistent back for us the last two years and John’s ready for a break-out year. We have no doubt he’ll be fantastic for us and we expect to get a lot of yards on the ground.”
For the first time in years, the Bulldogs must replace their entire offensive line but a number of candidates have stepped up in summer camp and look to take on starting roles while position battles are still waging for other spots on the line.
Senior Owen McLaughlin (6-foot-4, 220 pounds) steps in at tight end after sitting out last season with an injury and has looked good in camp.

Senior Pete Crowley (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) and junior John Volker (6-foot, 190) – younger brother of former Rumson and Princeton star running back Charlie Volker – will be the starting running backs and Coles is excited about what they bring to the table.
Both Crowley and Volker know their way around the field with Crowley rushing for 183 yards on 44 carries and two touchdowns a year ago as the primary blocking back for Maldjian, while Volker gained 249 yards on the ground on 45 carries and six touchdowns, including a 20-yard touchdown run in the Bowl game.
Isaiah Noguera
“I just have to take over and take on a bigger leadership role then I had last year,” said Coles. “It’s not as much as following and learning as it is more about leading by example this season.”
“We try to get everything right before we move forward,” explained Crowley. “’Perfect the Process’ is kind of like getting everything right so you can move on to the next thing and be positionally sound so there’s no mistakes.”
Justin Gorski
Coles (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) knows he needs to take on a bigger leadership role this season now that he’s one of the veterans on the team.
The Bulldogs have adopted the motto, “Perfect the Process” this season and they take it seriously.
Ryan Ruane
“It’s kind of a trend that every single year we got to reload players and it’s no different this year,” said two-year starting quarterback Collin Coles, who passed for 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns a year ago. “We lose a star running back just about every two years or so and we always seem to regenerate one and I don’t think that’s an accident. I think they inspire each other and as they’re learning from their older predecessor they simply get better and better.”
Junior Von Factor (5-foot-10, 225 pounds) returns to anchor the defensive line after a break-out sophomore campaign which saw him record 69 tackles with four sacks, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Boys Soccer: Rebuilding For Another Championship Season By Eric Braun
est divisions in the Shore. Prediction… Jackson Memorial
With the boys soccer season just underway, the question that remains is if Holmdel, Ocean Township or Christian Brothers Academy can overcome graduation departures and make another run at state titles. And who else is primed to make their own mark this season?
B North would be tough to pull against after Ocean’s incredible season, but can the Spartans duplicate it again this season after the number of players who graduated? Ocean should be in good position to compete for another division title, Shore Conference and state title with the amount of experience the underclassman got last season. Right on the heels of the Spartans will be the up and coming Colts Neck squad that is anchored by Jon Farfan and Christian Rivero. Wall Township returns a ton of experience and depth and could put them back into the conversation for tops in B North, Shore Conference and state titles. Prediction… Wall Township
Last season, these three programs went on impressive runs that saw them all bring home their respective NJSIAA Group championships. Holmdel finished the season as the top team in New Jersey and captured a second consecutive Group 3 championship. Christian Brothers Academy reclaimed the thrown in Non-Public A defeating Delbarton, 2-1. Ocean Township defeated Christian Brothers in the Shore Conference Tournament final, 1-0, and then beat Millburn, 1-0, in the Group 4 championship. It took Holmdel several years to put it altogether and finally in 2017 and 2018 the Hornets cemented themselves as one of the top teams in the state. Last season the Hornets finished the season with a record of 22-1, their lone loss coming in the semifinal of the Shore Conference Tournament to Ocean Township. Holmdel opened the 2018 campaign with five straight shutouts and never looked back from there. They outscored their opponents by a margin of 88-12. This season they will need to readjust, having lost 12 players to graduation, as well as the departure of longtime coach John Nacarlo. Luckily for the Hornets they return leading goal scorer Jack Giamanco, who tallied 23 goals and 10 assists in a break-out season, as he entered last season with just four goals. Similar to Holmdel, Ocean Township, which finished 22-3, will have to reshape their lineup this season due to graduation, losing 19 players. With the graduation of so many players in the fold, Ocean’s game plan last season gave many underclassmen valuable field time which should pay off this season for the Spartans. Returning are Eli Brandimarte, Robert Lopes and goalie Isaac Greenspan. Ocean will have a tough division to compete in, but hope early season development will be enough to gel together again like last season. Christian Brothers Academy will be in the same place as Holmdel and Ocean, graduating 17 from last year’s squad, but the Colts always find a way to rebuild without skipping a beat. This year will be no different with the return of Luke Pascarella, Connor Anderko, Michael Casper and Chris Vollrath leading the way. Christian Brothers should be able to make their way through the early part of the season finding their stride before another Shore Conference and NJSIAA run.
B Central is always a tough division to figure out with the amount of talent and constant turnover, and this year is no different. After making a deep run in the Non-Public B tournament last season, St. Rose returns a bulk of its roster. Leading scorer Christian Bodine will look to carry the load for the Purple Roses. Asbury Park, a few years removed from its state run, looks to return to its winning form along with the new-look Mater Dei Prep, which brings in new coaches and mentality. Point Pleasant Beach and Ranney also bring back plenty of game-day experience to challenge for the division. Prediction… St. Rose
Boys Soccer Previews & Predictions: A North will once again be one of the toughest divisions in the Shore Conference. CBA has come back to the pack due to graduation and opening the door for Freehold Township to continue their success, Howell to make a push for the division and Long Branch to get back to state form. The Patriots made a deep run into the States last year and return a core of their leadership in Bennett Messinger, Evan Savino, Zach Orrico and Adam Haven. Long Branch had the talent last season to compete and finished at 8-8-1, but the Green Wave should take some steps forward this season and compete for division and Shore Conference titles. Look for Jason Laviola and Patrick Odwyer to be the leaders and driving force for Long Branch this season. Prediction… Christian Brothers Academy A Central features Holmdel, which will look to keep its hold on the division, but Manasquan and Shore Regional are also primed to build off last season. Manasquan is coming off a 14-7-2 season and returns a strong nucleus of depth and experience from last season’s Group 2 run and
will lean on Tommy Johnson, Drew Gleenblatt and Frank Manno, who combined for 14 goals and 13 goals. Goalkeeper Joe Weinstein had a solid season with 108 saves and looks to build on that performance in his senior season. Shore Regional looks to be back in state championship form finishing last season with a sectional final loss to Holmdel, 4-0. The experience and depth should prove valuable for the Blue Devils as they make a serious run at the division and states again this season. Prediction… Holmdel A South boasts Jackson Memorial, which will be looking to take the next step this season after making it to the South Jersey Group 4 final last season. The Jags will rely on the veteran leadership of Danny Russo, Ben Schnaak and Ronny Bantang. Jackson Memorial, which finished 153-1, will look to hold off Toms River South, which is always in the hunt for division and state titles year in and year out, and will lean on the experience of keeper Jalen Folsom and forward Shane Kluxen. Also throwing pressure at the Jags will be Central Regional and Toms River North, who both bring a mixture of youth and veteran leadership. Once again it will be one of the tough-
B South should run through Pinelands again this season as the Wildcats return a ton of experience for the group that reached the South Jersey Group 3 final a year ago. John Hart returns for the offense where he scored seven goals and assisted on six last season. Donovan Catholic took a step forward last year and will look to build on its 7-8-2 record with another year of experience. Lacey, which was hit with high graduation numbers after a 13-5-2 record, could make another run at Pinelands and South Jersey Group 3 with the return of leading scorer Sean Moffitt and Michael Cyphers. Prediction… Lacey Township

2019 RED BANK CATHOLIC FOOTBALL PREVIEW: NOT FINISHED YET By Mike Ready
RED BANK – This year’s Red Bank Catholic football team has a tough act to follow after last year’s squad went undefeated on the way to capturing the NJSIAA Non-Public Group III championship for their second state title in five years and first undefeated season since 1960.
from a lot of great players. He continues to evolve and immerge and takes steps forward.” His counterpart on the other side of the line is 6-foot-5, 240-pound Boston College commit Charlie Gordinier, who is comparable in size and ability to Bauman, giving the Caseys the top tight end tandem in the state. However, Gordinier has made more of a name for himself at outside linebacker where he garnered All-Shore recognition a year ago and the position Boston College recruited him for.
However, despite graduating many of the key contributors off of last season’s championship team, including Boston College freshman quarterback Steve Lubischer, the Caseys bring back a strong nucleus of players, including some of the most elite talent the Shore Conference has to offer and that bodes well for this year’s team.
You can expect to see the Caseys in a double tight end formation depending on the situation.
“We didn’t lose as many as people would like to think we did,” said head coach Frank Edgerly when asked about graduated players. “We lost some key people but in high school football you lose guys every year. We actually bring back a lot more going into this year than we did last year, so we feel pretty good where we’re at.”
“At times we will be for sure,” said Edgerly when asked about utilizing a double tight end formation. “But they both play defense so we have to be very mindful of these guys with their overall workload.”
Replacing Lubischer won’t be an easy task and Edgerly will be turning to his son, Ryan, to take over the reins. “Ryan’s had a great offseason and that’s carried over to summer and thus far into camp,” Edgerly said. “He’s extremely smart; he knows the system very well and he has a very accurate arm.” The Caseys look to be a more run-heavy team this year and may even incorporate the wishbone into their offense with the deep and talented group of backs they bring back, including All-Shore selection Billy Guidetti, who rushed for 902 yards and 12 touchdowns while averaging 6.6 yards per carry. “Billy’s a four-year player for us,” said Edgerly. “He became our full-time starter last year so with that depth of experience you’re hoping for an even bigger step forward.” Senior Kevin Degnan, who rushed for 210 yards and three touchdowns in the regular-season final filling in for the injured Guidetti, saw extensive action a year ago and proved he could handle the load. Don’t be surprised if you see both Guidetti and Degnan in the same backfield as Edgerly has stated he wants to mix things up. Senior Elijah Jules will get some carries too, especially if Edgerly utilizes a three-back backfield. “We’re getting in and out of some things,” Edgerly said. “We’re going to sprinkle some things in. A lot of it is depth-related and we like the flexibility we have as an offense to get in and out of certain things.” The offensive line returns three starters led by 6-foot-2, 265-pound junior Jake Louro, who will anchor the line from his center position after a break-out sophomore campaign that saw him evolve into one of the better lineman in the Shore. “Jake’s really taken a big step forward,” said Edgerly. “He’s bigger and stronger and obviously has taken on a bigger leadership role based on his experience and performance from last year. He’s really emerging on both sides of the ball as a leader up front.” He’ll be flanked on his left by 6-foot, 255-pound returning senior guard Chris Hart, who established himself as one of the most physical and punishing guards in the Shore last season, and on the right by 6-foot-2, 250-pound junior guard Luke Guidetti, back after a stellar sophomore season. “This time last season we only had one offensive lineman coming back,” said
Edgerly. “Right now we’re further ahead than we were a year ago at that spot and to have that unit come together and gel is always a work in progress.” Red Bank Catholic has a knack of plugging big-bodied athletes into vacant positions on the offensive line and then watch them develop into some of the top linemen in the Shore and that’s what they’re expecting out of newcomers Greyson Brockreide (6-foot-3, 290 pounds), Matt Cody (5-foot-11, 260 pounds) and junior John O’Brien (6-foot-5, 280 pounds). Cody steps into the all-important left tackle spot, while Brockeide gets the start at right tackle with O’Brien also in the rotation. “The line is looking good and we’ve been working really hard everyday in practice,” said Louro. “We owe it all to offensive line coach Joe O’Connor.” The wide receiver grouping took a big hit graduating two All-Shore performers in Jaden Key (University of Pennsylvania) and M.J. Wright (Fordham University), but the Caseys’ next-man-up mentality will bode well here with three talented wideouts ready to step in and produce. Seniors Sean Rossback (5-foot-9, 190 pounds) and Kyle Harms (5-foot-8, 150 pounds), junior Lenny Loria (5-foot-11, 175 pounds) and sophomore Alex Bauman (6-3, 215 pounds) are all capable receivers with a ton of potential. “We have two guys back with starting experience in Rossback and Loria,” said Edgerly. “So we’re not lacking experience it’s just about for us, who’s going to be that guy to take that next step forward.” Tight end is the deepest position grouping on the team with two All-Shore selections with FBS commitments already under their belts. University of Notre Dame-bound Kevin Bauman has been one of the most heavily recruited tight end prospects in the country. He already has an NFLready frame at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, has the speed to find the seam downfield to make the catch with soft hands – averaging 22.8 yards per catch – and the physicality to run over would-be tacklers. And when he’s not making big plays downfield, he’s opening holes and protecting the quarterback with flawless blocking technique. “What he does from a mental standpoint and a work ethic standpoint permeates throughout this team,” Edgerly said of Bauman. “Physically he’s gifted. He’s big, strong and athletic, but it’s those things he does that separates him
On the defensive side of the ball the Caseys will try to match the ferocity of last year’s unit which was ranked second in the Shore Conference allowing just 10 points a game. And with Bauman, Gordinier, Louro and Degnan back to spearhead this year’s defense, they just may have a shot to do that. Bauman returns at defensive end with his younger brother, Alex, starting opposite of him at the other end position where he dominated on the freshmen team. Louro will be at one tackle spot with 6-foot-1, 215-pound newcomer J.J. Lodato stepping in next to Louro as the other tackle. Gordinier (83 T, 11 TFL, 5.5 SKS) heads up the linebacker corps where he should absolutely dominate this year and put fear into the eyes of opposing quarterbacks as he bears down on them on a blitz. You can expect to see his sack total soar this season as Edgerly lets him loose. “Charlie has gotten bigger and stronger and he’s going to be a three-year starter,” said Edgerly. “Naturally he’s a guy that you know that you can do a little bit more with if need be.” Senior Jack Zenkert was a part-time starter a year ago and steps into the fulltime role this season with a wealth of experience that should translate well on the field this year. Billy Guidetti will see double duty this season taking on a starting linebacker job with sophomore Ryan McPherson and junior Scott Ungemah vying for playing time. The secondary returns three starters in Degnan, Rossback and Loria, with junior Anthony Borriello and Jules stepping into starting roles. Rossback and Loria will be at cornerback with Jules taking on the nickel cornerback responsibilities and Degnan and Borriello will man the safety spots. Sophomores Joe Diorio and Corbett Cimini provide backup. First-team All-Shore kicker/punter Ryan O’Hara, now at Lafayette, will be tough to replace with sophomore Chaz Hart now kicking and Borriello taking over punting responsibilities. Middletown South transfer Michael O’Connor, who must sit out the first four games, could step in at both jobs when eligible. “Right now we’re just worried about Rumson,” said Edgerly when asked if he thinks this team can compete for another title. “Where that takes us, it takes us. We’re fortunate to have a lot of guys back. Not only guys that were starters, but guys that were role players and understand what that ride takes. We’re hoping that serves us well and what that translate into, time will tell.” Red Bank Catholic hosts Rumson-Fair Haven on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.

2019 DONOVAN CATHOLIC PREVIEW: THE FUTURE IS NOW By Mike Ready
TOMS RIVER – From 2014 through 2016, Donovan Catholic won three games, including two winless seasons in 2014 and 2016.
frame who recorded four sacks a year ago with 12 TFL and 64 tackles. You can expect those numbers to climb as he’s bigger, stronger and faster than ever.
In 2017, Donovan Catholic hired Dan Curcione as head coach less than two months after he led Wall to their first state sectional championship in 14 years in his third year at the school.
“The defense is really coming together,” said Aldrich. “Coach has been working us really hard, we’ve been pushing each other and we’re getting better.”
Curcione brought along his offensive coordinator, Chip LaBarca, Jr., who previously was the head coach at Toms River North from 2006 through 2012, including a perfect 12-0 season and South Jersey Group IV championship in 2007.
Brogna returns at defensive end opposite Aldrich after a break-out freshman campaign that saw him record 26 tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks giving the Griffins a duo of formidable bookends on the defensive line.
In hiring Curcione, Donovan Catholic was banking on a similar transformation as the one he engineered at Wall. Donovan Catholic is aiming high and the hope is to eventually be mentioned in the same breath as perennial Shore Conference parochial powers Red Bank Catholic, Mater Dei Prep and Saint John Vianney.
McNair will see double duty again this season from the nose tackle position on the line where he’s an immovable force who exhibits surprising agility for man his size. Capone, Taz McNair, Nico Ippolito and Siragusa will be in the defensive line rotation.
That day may be coming sooner than later. Curcione took over a Wall program which had won just five games in two years and three years later the Crimson Knights went 10-2 and were crowned state champions.
The Griffins return all four starting linebackers, including three AllShore selections, and it could’ve easily been four. They just may be the best foursome of linebackers in the Shore Conference and one of the best units in the state. They bring power, speed, versatility, relentless sideline-to-sideline motors, superior coverage strengths and they just get after it.
Now in his third year at Donovan Catholic, the Griffins are on similar path of development. In 2016, Curcione’s inaugural season, the Griffins went 4-6 before improving to 7-3 a year ago – their most wins since 1993. They finished second in the National Division and qualified for the state playoffs before giving Mater Dei, which went toe-to-toe with Red Bank Catholic in the Non-Public Group III final, all they could handle in a 35-21 loss in the first round. With most of that team returning for the 2019 season, including its rising senior quarterback, Ryan Clark, the future is now for the Griffins. Clark, who already has a verbal commitment from UMass on the table, was a 2018 third-team All-Shore selection after throwing for 1,013 yards and nine touchdowns and rushing for 653 yards and 14 touchdowns. “We’re just out here every single practice just trying to get better and continue the bond that we’re continually growing,” said Clark. “We’re really getting ready for the season in Week Zero and that’s all we’re focused on now. We’re trying to make a new path for this school and I feel like we’re really accomplishing that.” The senior quarterback will be executing behind one of the better offensive lines in the Shore this season led by two All-Division selections. Junior Cam McNair (6-foot-5, 300 pounds) is a road-grader that has offers from Rutgers, Pitt and West Virginia. He’ll be at left tackle with 6-foot-4, 305-pound All-Division tackle Tom Buxton on the opposite side at right tackle. Senior Elio Siragusa (5-foot-11, 265 pounds) is at center and handles the long snapper responsibilities while sophomore Dom Brogna (6-foot-2, 265 pounds) is back at left guard with sophomore Taz McNair (6-foot-3, 265 pounds) leading the competition for the starting right guard spot. “We’ve got some big boys on the line,” said Clark. “They’re a phenomenal bunch of guys that really get after it in the trenches and do the dirty work that nobody sees.”
The Griffins return their top two running backs from a season ago to run behind that massive line. All-Division back junior Jahdir Lofton (5-foot-8, 170 pounds) rushed for 489 yards on just 48 carries for a whopping 10.2 yards per carry average and three touchdowns. He’s fast and powerful and can beat you in a number of ways. Senior Nasir Calhoun (5-foot-10, 190 pounds) also returns giving the Griffins two big-time backs to complement Clark’s multi-dimensional game. Calhoun had just 19 carries last season but picked up 257 yards for a stellar 13.5 yards per carry average. The Griffins’ top receiver from a year ago, Yassin Moore, transferred to Monmouth Regional but Clark still has his number two wideout, Andre Laney (5foot-11, 180 pounds), back. Laney caught 10 passes for 190 yards (19 yards/ catch) and he’s a legitimate deep threat to take it all the way on any given play.
On the outside is senior Xavier Ellis, who led the team in sacks (5) and TFL (15) while recording 63 tackles. Opposite him on the outside is Loftland who had a solid sophomore season at linebacker when he posted 49 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Calhoun and sophomore Connor Farrell will backup on the outside. Juniors Quamire Green and Dominick Nocero are both returning starters on the inside who were two of the top sophomore linebackers in the Shore. Green was second on the team with 91 tackles while Nocero led the team with 97 tackles. Green had two TFL, a sack, three fumble recoveries and an interception, while Nocero added two TFL, a sack and fumble recovery. Senior Tony Iacullo will backup Green and Nocero. In the secondary, the Griffins bring back two starting safeties and a crew of cornerbacks with starting experience.
Sophomore Jaden Anthony also returns after getting his feet wet last year catching four passes for 42 yards, and junior James Bivens will add depth and experience after catching 10 passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Elijah Taylor (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) is big target and another option for Clark in the passing game.
Senior Jared Helstowski and junior John Schlendorf return as starters at safety and will be counted on to take on more of a leadership role. Helstowski led the secondary with 38 tackles, two TFL and an interception, while Schlendorf added 24 tackles and an interception. Senior Keon Torres will see time at safety in a backup role.
Sophomore Levi Wilkins (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) and junior Ethan Capone (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) are rising tight ends that split time there as starters a year ago. Both showed a huge upside on blocking assignments and catching the ball. Wilkins grabbed seven passes for 115 yards while Capone had five receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Juniors Evyn Menta, Bivins and sophomore Myson Esdaile are battling for cornerback spots with Laney and Anthony seeing time in the secondary as well.
Defensively, the Griffins return almost their entire defensive unit – including five All-Division players – that allowed just 13.5 points per game. Up front, the line is anchored by All-Division defensive end Chris Aldrich (6foot-4, 200 pounds), who is a dynamic playmaker with the perfect pass-rusher
“We’re just focused on winning our first game,” said Aldrich. “It would be huge though (to win a championship) because no one expects it and that’s pretty much our goal to win every week and if we can do that we’ll be alright.” The Griffins open at home versus Linden on Friday, Sept. 6.
