LAKEWOOD RIDES DEFENSE TO CJ GROUP II CROWN By Mike Ready

LAKEWOOD – Top seeded Lakewood’s relentless pressure defense finally broke the backs, and then the hearts of the Manasquan boys basketball team, turning a one-point game with 45 seconds left in the third, into 13-point, 62-49 win Monday night at the John “Pot” Richardson Gymnasium in Lakewood. The win handed the Piners their second CJ Group II title in four years and atoned for last year’s home loss to Neptune in the sectional final. “That’s our staple, defense and being in condition,” said Coach Randy Holmes, known for his grueling practices. “That’s one thing we can rely on, to wear them down. I watched some game film on them, and noticed they rarely used their bench.” Lakewood’s motto all year long has been, ‘TTE’ or Total Team Effort, and last night there was no question that’s exactly what they needed. Star guard, Tyrice Beverette, went down with an ankle injury with 6:18 remaining in the game, and suddenly the 41-31 Piner lead appeared a lot less comfortable. “Our brother fell and we had to come together,” senior forward, Jared Craddox, said. “We worked too hard lose it. We knew we had enough talent to get the W [win].” Photo By: Francine Attardi

“Coach said when someone falls

down, we have to pick him up and work even harder,” said junior center, Ben ‘Big Ben’ Watson. Watson grabbed five of his team-high 11 rebounds, and scored three of his nine points after Beverette went out, while senior guard, Erick Davis, sank six of eight free throws. Junior forward, Maurice Diawara, netted five of his 11 points, and Craddox struck for five of his 13 points, all with Beverette on the bench. “When Tyrice went out, I pulled the guys together and said, ‘This is what TTE is all about,’” Holmes said. “When one of our brothers went down, we came together as a team.” Despite missing most of the final quarter, Beverette still led the Piners in scoring with 17 points, and added seven rebounds while shutting down Manasquan’s all-everything guard senior, J.R. Hobbie. Hobbie led the Warriors with 23 points, although only 11 came against Beverette. Manasquan had pulled to within one, 32-31 with under a minute to play in the third, on a rebound and put-back by senior center, Jimmy Walsh. The Stonehill University bound Walsh, a career 1000 point and rebound standout, was fighting the flu, but still managed nine points, 11 boards, and three assists. Lakewood then turned the tides going on a 9-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters, to take a 10-point lead. The Warriors would never get Continued on page 14

Harlem Globetrotters Excite Fans at Brookdale By Ted Kaiser

LINCROFT— A visit by the world famous Harlem Globetrotters packed the Collins Arena at Brookdale Community College last week. The high-flying wizards of basketball performed in front of sold out crowds on Wednesday and Thursday as they competed for the world championship against Global Select. The Globetrotters used their combination of

athleticism, theater, and comedy to treat the fans to some entertaining basketball and laughs.

shooting. The theatrics carried right into the start of the game where it seemed like the Globetrotters were toying with Global Select for the first three quarters. During timeouts there were many interactions with the fans and silly stunts carried about by the mischievous Globetrotters. Some of the tricks included switching to a lighter than air basketball when Global Select was shooting free throws and pulling down the shorts of the opposing players.

After a pregame performance, Globie and friends, the Globetrotters’ mascot, the team came out for warm-ups and got the crowd going with thunderous dunks, creative dribbling, fancy passes, and long range

The loudest ovations of the night came for rookie, Alex “Moose” Weekes, whose blow-out hairstyle was a favorite topic amongst the crowd. His two thunderous dunks sent the fans into a tizzy. “Big Easy” Lofton narrated most of the evening from the court while sinking his signature hook shots from mid-court. “Big Easy” also found the time for a dance session with a woman and her

JERSEY SHORE — The Jackson Memorial boys’ bowling team won their third straight state title and advanced to the Tournament of Champions. The Jaguars ultimately fell to Sayreville for the crown, but it was another great season for the team. They won Group IV by bowling 3,304, the highest mark of any team in any section in the state. Senior, Mike Ormsby, won the individual title edging out Ocean Township’s Kenny Ryan. "[Ormsby’s] all about the team," Jackson Memorial coach, Anthony Buczynski, said. "He's one of the most unself-

ish kids. Really, I'm just elated that he ended his senior year, his high school career, with this moment. It couldn't happen to a nicer kid. He's a reserved, humble kid. And he'll carry that with him his whole life." For the girls, Manasquan senior, Bryce Petraccoro, won the individual state championship defeating Mother Seton's Dominique Toro, 222-196 in the final. Her performance helped the Warriors finish fourth in the Group II championships. "This has been an amazing season for

And I'm so happy that I went out with this." Brick Memorial won its first ever Tournament of Champions team title. The Mustangs defeated Manchester, the defending champions and winners of five straight group titles, in the final in three games. Brick Memorial received a big performance by junior, Kaity Lash, to help lift them to victory. Meanwhile, the Hawks nearly defended their title after they knocked off top-seeded Brick Township, who won the Group III championship.

Freehold Borough Girls Finish Super Season By Michael Rogers

The Freehold Borough girls’ basketball team had a successful season finishing with a 23-win and only 6-loss season. They moved on to the Shore Conference Tournament, but suffered a disappointing second round. They came back strong with an impressive showing in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III Tournament reaching the finals and defeating a very talented Neptune team (21 wins and 6 losses) by the score of 50 to 48 in overtime. To reach the finals against Neptune, Freehold Borough first defeated Hopewell Valley by the score of 59 to 34. Camerin Spahn led the way in scoring with 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Sophia Duffy added 13 points and Kim Dana added 12 points. Rebecca Cobb rounded out the scoring with 11 points in the victory.

In the final against Neptune, Spahn overcame a tough shooting night by hitting two clutch free throws in overtime to preserve the victory. She finished the game with 5 points. Dana helped pick up the scoring slack by scoring 18 points and Cobb also scored 16 points in the win. Even though Freehold Borough's season would end with a 35 to 26 loss to Ocean City in the Group III semi final, Freehold Borough still celebrated what was a fantastic season. For the season, Freehold Borough had a very balanced scoring attack with Cobb averaging 14 points per game, while Spahn averaged 13 points per game and also averaged 5 rebounds per game. Kim Dana averaged 11 points and 3 assists per game, while Sara Cobb also contributed averaging 6 points per game.

Lady Fliers Finish Another Strong Season By Eric Braun

NEPTUNE - Success and Neptune Lady Fliers Basketball go handand-hand the last couple of seasons and this one was no different. The Fliers finished the season at an impressive 21-6 mark and another top 20 finish in the State of New Jersey. Neptune looked like it was in the drivers seat for another Central Jersey Group III Title, but was beaten by a feisty Freehold Borough team

Lighten Up Your Supper

(Serves 4) 4 4-ounce pieces boneless white fish fillets 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (dill, tarragon, chives, parsley) 2 cups shredded carrots 1 cup halved seedless green grapes 1 cup (4 ounces) grated Jarlsberg cheese

LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y. – When the game is on the line, Brookdale wants the ball in the hands of sophomore guard, Neil Thompson. Thompson, the Region XIX Player of the Year, got that opportunity again Friday night with the score tied at 69, and eight seconds remaining in the NJCAA DIII semifinal against Herkimer Community College at Sullivan County Community College.

Preheat oven to 425°. Coat fillet pieces with olive oil; arrange in a foil-lined, oven-proof baking dish. Mix together herbs, carrots, grapes and cheese. Divide mixture into equal portions to cover each fillet, then top each with a lemon slice. Cover dish tightly with foil and bake 20 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes, covered, before serving. If desired, drizzle with a simple lemon vinaigrette and a few grindings of fresh black pepper. Serve with steamed, lightly buttered asparagus and baby red potatoes.

Thompson (Monmouth Regional) brought the ball up court penetrating the lane. As the defense collapsed around him, he kicked the ball out to a wide-open Corey Soanes in the far corner. Soanes, a freshman guard and Matawan Regional graduate, didn’t hesitate in sinking the threepointer for a wild 72-69 victory. “We had the ball in Neil’s hands to see if he could penetrate and get to the basket, maybe draw a foul,” Head coach Paul Cisek said. “He split the zone, and their two guards squeezed him, so he found Corey alone on the right wing. Corey caught it right in front of our bench; he had a perfect look and stuck it.”

The Fliers were lead offensively by Iyonna Crenshaw and Ivy Harrington. Harrington capped her senior season eclipsing the 1,000 point mark in the final game against

Ranked first in the NJCAA DIII Poll, Brookdale (32-1) will meet 29-4 Eastfield College (Tx.) in the championship game at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Eastfield is ranked fifth in Division III and defeated sixth ranked Mass Bay Community College (Mass.) 91-65 to advance. “Neil said he knew I would make it, so he just kicked it out to me,” Soanes said. “I rarely shoot threes, but when I took the shot, I knew it was going in. At that point, there was only one way we were going to win, and that was if I made the shot. I was standing there alone for the longest time, I wanted the ball, I didn’t want overtime.” Thompson added, “I tried to go to Dave (Rosado) but he was covered, they had over-played him. Once Dave was cutoff, I tried to make a play on my own, but I felt like the whole defense had collapsed on me. I saw Corey wide open, and he knocked it down. He deserves the sixth man of the year award.” Brookdale bolted to a 22-10 lead at 9:40 of the first half before the Generals 2-3 zone defense shutdown the Blues dribble-and-drive penetration game, forcing them into bad shots from the perimeter. The Blues took a precarious 30-28 first-half lead before Herkimer’s Todd Hunt’s three-pointer gave the Generals their first lead of the game, 44-42

at 12:45 of the second half. Brookdale, down by as many as nine at 6:18, never led again until Soanes game-clinching three. Thompson was huge down the stretch hitting a three-pointer from way outside the arc to pull the Blues to within three, 64-61 at 2:47. At the two-minute mark, he again pulled the Blues to within three, 66-63 going coast-to-coast for a layup. Hunt then made the first of two free throws for Herkimer, before freshman forward Joe Nickerson (Barringer HS) rebounded and was fouled. Nickerson made both and it was a two-point game, 67-65 at 1:41. Jerome Floyd sank one-of-two free throws for a three-point lead and the Generals got the ball back before Soanes forced an offensive charge on Johnnie Davis, giving the ball back to Brookdale, down by three with only 49.9 seconds left. Thompson then took the ball coast-tocoast for a beautiful reverse layup to cut the deficit to one, 68-67 at the 40-second mark. On the inbound possession, Nickerson stole the ball at half court and drove the lane for the go-ahead points. Freshman forward Paul Little fouled out for the Blues, putting Floyd at the line for two shots and a chance to take the lead. Floyd hit the first, to tie the game, but missed the second. There was a scramble for the rebound, with the Generals grabbing it, and calling timeout with the score tied 69, and 23.8 seconds to play. Feiler stepped out-of-bounds on the inbound play to set up the Thompson-toSoane’s heroics. “Being the leader of this team, I knew I had to step up,” Thompson said afterwards. “Coach Rivera told me this is my moment, my time. I just wanted to make sure we won this game; I wanted it all on my back.” Thompson finished with 13 points, 10 in the second half, six assists and a steal. Nickerson had 18 points, five rebounds and two steals, while Little added 17 points, eight boards, two assists and a block. Rosado chipped in with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists. Sophomore point guard, Amir Gilliam (Science Park HS), had eight points, seven assists and three steals. “These kids don’t quit; they stayed with it and played the way they’re supposed to,” added Cisek. Boys and Girls Swimming Wrap-up By Ted Kaiser

JERSEY SHORE— The Shore Conference had a pretty good performance at the Meet of Champions for swimming at Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell. On the boys’ side, Ocean Township senior, Sam Lynch, broke a two-year old record in the 100-backstroke. Lynch recorded a 48.62 to win and give the Spartans a state champion. "My strategy is usually to kick fast underwater and just swim," Lynch said. "I really did it for my coach [Bill Lynch, no relation]. We never got him a state championship, so I thought I would give him a state champion." The championship followed up a strong season for Lynch who was the Most Valuable Swimmer at the Monmouth County Championships and won two events at the Shore Conference Championships.

Toms River North’s Zach Molloy also earned a victory as he took home their crown in the 100-freestyle with a time of 45.98. TR North’s Will Molloy came in fourth in the 500-yard freestyle. Ryan O’Neill of Freehold Township finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle and 8th in the 500-yard freestyle. TR South’s Jacob Limaldi was sixth in the 100-backstroke. For the girls, the Shore Conference could not break through to the Meet of Champions this year. Red Bank Catholic went the furthest, reaching the Non-Public A championship where they lost to Immaculate Heart. The Caseys had two first place individual finishes with Karli Rymer in the 200 freestyle and Jackie VanLew in the 500 freestyle. They also took first place in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle.

sectional title, as well. The Bulldogs found themselves in a familiar position when they faced Point Borough in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II finals. The Bulldogs came out victorious by the score of 53 to 49 in overtime. Grace Stant led the Bulldogs in scoring with 16 points and she also grabbed 13 rebounds in the victory. She played great defense against one of the best players in the state, Kelly Hughes. It was the Bulldogs first sectional title since 2009 and their 11th since 2000. Hanah Miller added 14 points for Rumson, while Sam Sabino finished with 9 points and made two clutch free throws to preserve the victory. The Bulldogs moved on to the Group II semi finals, but came up short with their season coming to an end with a 56 to 39 defeat to Willingboro (22 and 5 record). Stant led the way in scoring in the game with 16 points, while Hanah Miller added 14 points. Rumson Fair Haven's team this season had a great balance of senior leadership and youthful excitement, which led to a very balanced scoring attack. For the season, Stant led the way averaging 14 points per game as a sophomore. Two seniors, Jess Harvey and Hanah Miller, each averaged 8 points per game. Sam Sabino was another sophomore who played quality minutes for the Bulldogs who have enough talent returning for next season to be successful once again.

CALZONETTI, POINT BEACH TAKE HOME FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP By Mike Ready TOMS RIVER – Senior, Riley Calzonetti, scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, including 10 fourth-quarter points to lead the Garnet Gulls to a 43-39 victory over Dayton (22-6) in the NJIAA Group I final Sunday at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway. Calzonetti’s big night helped Point Beach (27-3) win its first state championship in school history and matched the accomplishments of the girls’ team, which also won its first state title earlier in the day. “This has been a special time for the community and the support has been amazing,” Point Beach coach, Nick Catania, said. “These guys are on a special run. This is hard to do. It’s not every year a team goes on a run like this, so it’s been good to see the town and the school enjoy it as much as they have.” It was the third straight defensive gem for Point Beach, who held Dayton to 16-for-41 (34 percent) shooting from the field after holding Bound Brook to 28 percent and Paulsboro to 33 percent in the CJ Group I final and the Group I semifinal respectively. But as good as the defense was, the Gulls offense struggled, shooting only 39 percent (16-for-41) from the field and 50 percent (9-for-18) from the line, keeping the Bulldogs in striking distance for most the game. The Garnet Gulls held a 20-17 halftime lead, before Calzonetti put Point Beach in front for good when he

grabbed a Matt Farrell pass underneath the boards for an easy layup to make it 26-25 with 1:52 left in the third. “They (Dayton) went to a 2-3 zone which really opened up the middle for us to get easy offensive rebounds,” Cazonetti said. “It really cleared up the middle for us and allowed us to get some easy buckets”

Junior, Noa Yates, chipped in with five points, six boards, an assist and two steals. Point Beach will now head to the Tournament of Champions as the No. 6 seed in the field of six teams and will play No. 3 seed and third ranked At-

lantic City (29-1), Wednesday at the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River. Atlantic City won its second straight Group IV title Sunday by beating Linden in overtime and will attempt to advance to its second straight T of C semifinals. Follow me on twitter @getmready

Cantania added, “In the zone, they were playing, they were extending out so we were reversing the ball and getting it inside to Riley. We tried to flash the high post and look for the sure corner because as aggressive as they were, we knew it would work.” The Bulldogs got to within four, 37-33 at 1:08 of the fourth quarter before Calzonetti hit two free throws and senior guard, P.J. Kinneavy, went 4-for-4 from the line to boost the lead to 10, 43-33 with 24.6 seconds to play in the game. Dayton’s Elijah Brown and Anthony Cioffi hit late three-pointers for the final margin of victory. Kinneavy scored six of his nine points in the fourth quarter and added three rebounds, four assists and three steals on the night. Calzonetti also grabbed a team high seven rebounds, while junior Dominque Uhl had seven points, four rebounds, three assists, one steal and two blocks.

Wrestling Wrap: Clagon Repeats, Shore Conference Medals By Kevin Davis

Toms River South senior, B.J. Clagon, finished first in the 145-pound weight class at the 2013 NJSIAA wrestling championships, making him one of 15 Shore Conference representatives to take home medals at this year’s event. Clagon defeated South Plainfield senior, Troy Heilmann, 2-1 in a final that saw the Toms River South upperclassman take the lead with a dramatic reverse in the final half minute before riding out the 44th victory of his unblemished season. The state title was Clagon’s second in as many years, as his 2012 campaign ended with a state championship at 138 pounds, the culmination of another undefeated year during which the then-junior posted a 41-0 record. Before beating Heilmann, Clagon wrestled his way to the 145 finals with a pre-quarterfinal pin against Northern Highlands junior, Sean Kelly, in 5:39, a 12-2 major decision win over Hillsborough senior, Rhys Weinberger, in the quarterfinals, and a pin against Trenton junior, Maaziah Bethea, in 3:45 in the semifinal round.

to undefeated Don Bosco Prep junior, Luis Gonzalez. Before his final round setback, Corrigan knocked off Randolph’s A.J. Vindici 8-1 in the prequarterfinal round, Delbarton’s Nick Farro 10-8 in the quarterfinals, and got past Jefferson’s Bryan Damon with a 4-3 decision win in a semifinal decided by an ultimate tiebreaker. Toms River South was not alone among Shore Conference schools with multiple representatives earning medals at Boardwalk Hall. In fact, fellow powerhouse, Brick Memorial, had three representatives take home medals, led by senior, Matt Moore, who took home fourth place honors at 195. Moore was joined by senior, Tyler Richardson, who placed sixth at 170, and junior, Nick Costa, who earned an 8-4 decision win over Holy Cross’s Matt Correnti to earn seventh place at 182 pounds.

“(Clagon) has been as dominant as anyone in the state,” said Toms River South wrestling coach, Ron Laycock. “In the last 85 matches he’s wrestled, he’s only had two decisions – last year’s TheGuide12_196 12/14/12and 8:59 AM 103 finals.” (state) semis thisPage year’s

Jackson Memorial and Neptune also saw multiple student-athletes finish as place-winners. Jackson Memorial senior, Brian Hamman, dominated Nick Matthews of West Morris en route to a 13-0 major decision win and fifth place honors at 138 pounds while senior teammate, Alec Huxford, finished eighth in the 126-pound class. For Neptune, the duo of senior, Dae’Sean Brown, and sophomore, Nasiyr Brown, finished in fourth place at 170 and eighth place at 113, respectively.

Clagon was nearly joined in the state champion winners’ circle by fellow senior teammate, Kevin Corrigan, who reached the8:59113-pound finals before TheGuide12_196 12/14/12 AM Page TheGuide12_196 12/14/12 8:59 Page103 being edged outAM in a1035-4 decision loss

MABREY, FLAHERTY LEAD POINT BEACH TO FIRST GROUP I STATE TITLE By Mike Ready

TOMS RIVER – A comfortable eightpoint Garnet Gull lead with 1:08 left in the game had evaporated to one, 5554 with Bloomfield Tech’s Yasmin Dorrielan at the line for two shots, and a chance to take the lead with 12.8 seconds remaining in the game Sunday in the NJIAA Group I final at the Pine Belt Arena in Toms River. As Dorrielan’s second miss bounced off the rim and rolled along the baseline, junior guard, Katelynn Flaherty, dove for the loose ball and got a partial grip on it to force a jump ball. With the possession arrow pointing in Point Beach’s favor, the Gulls had possession with less than 10 seconds left. “I knew I had to get it,” Flaherty said, who shot 9-for-18 from the field and 9-for-10 from the foul line for a gamehigh 30 points. “I knew I had to get my hands on it and I knew we’d get possession.” Sophomore forward, Marina Mabrey, made one-of-two from the free throw line after a Bloomfield Tech foul on the inbound play, and Ra-Janee Fuller’s last second desperation shot fell short, handing eleventh ranked Point Beach (25-1), a 56-54 win over Bloomfield Tech, and their first Group I state title. “They came out strong in the third quarter with their scoring and us having a little bit of shock,” Mabrey said. “We pulled it together, with me taking the ball to the basket, and Katelynn scoring a lot of points. Our whole team played defense, and even though we didn’t rebound that well, we still got some key ones at the end that kept us in the game. We hung in there and got the win.” Mabrey, who finished with 26 points and a team leading 11 rebounds, hit a huge three-pointer after the Spartans had cut the lead from seven to three

with 1:57 showing on the clock. “I got the ball on the wing and I was wide open,” Mabrey said. “I didn’t want to risk anything dribbling it in, so I just took the open shot.” “We were starting to reel,” said head coach, Mike Feerst, “but that shot made us believe again, then we turned the ball over a couple of times and that made it interesting.” “Their press was tough,” Flaherty said. “They were all on top of me, a lot of people running at you, and they’re quick and athletic and want the ball. I just had to make sure I kept it under control.” Although Point Beach was outrebounded 44-24 by the much bigger Spartan girls, Mabrey grabbed the most important board of the game, and was fouled after dribbling past half court with 1:08 remaining. She sank both to give the Gulls an eight-point lead, before the final flurry of events turned the game into a nail biter. “It’s exciting and satisfying,” Mabrey said. “Our school had never even been to a sectional. To win a sectional and a Group I state championship is fun and a completely new experience for the whole school. Point Beach is filled with everyone wearing basketball shirts, it’s all basketball now.” “I feel fantastic,” Feerst said. “I’m so proud of them; all that we’ve accomplished this year is tremendous for them and the whole school. Being Group I we have to play hard all the time, we always have. We never give up, and today was a perfect example.” Follow me on twitter @getmready

Middletown North’s Tom O’Neill nearly missed the record in the 3,200. He ran a time of 9:02.00

The girls’ didn’t produce any champions, but there were some good finishes. Toms River South’s Molly Applegate (5:02.57) and Lacey’s Danielle Leavitt (5:02.74) came in third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,600-meter race. St. John Vianney’s Courtney Thompson finished second in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 10:45.00. Nicole Macco of Matawan came in third place in the pole vault. The Neptune 1,600-meter relay team finished third.

which was good for fifth all-time. It is the second Meet of Champions title for O’Neill who won a cross country title in the fall.

Manasquan raced through the sea season with only two losses and entered the semi finals of the Shore Confer Conference Tournament against a talented Point Pleasant Beach team. The War Warriors led the game most of the way, but down the stretch couldn't secure the victory losing by the score of 50 to 47. Norman Hobbie led Manasquan in scoring with 26 points with 18 of them coming in the first half. Jimmy Walsh scored 15 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in the game.

JERSEY SHORE— The indoor track season proved to be a good one for the Shore Conference when it came down to the Meet of Champions. The boys’ produced two individual winners with Red Bank Catholic’s Rob Napolitano winning the 1,600-meter race and Middletown North’s Tom O’Neill taking the 3,200-meter race crowd. Napolitano, who is headed to Columbia University in the fall, is the fourth indoor winner for RBC in the last four years. Kevin Byrne won the 800 in 2010, and Molly McNamara (2011) and Liana Marzano (2012) won the 1,600.

The Manasquan boys’ basketball team had high hopes going into the season and was ranked as one of the best teams at the start. As they finished with a 23-win and 4-loss season, the Warriors were successful, but they Conferwere not able to win a Shore Confer ence Tournament A Sectional title.

RBC Reaches TOC Semis By Jim Hintelmann

TOMS RIVER - Red Bank Catholic's hopes for an NJSIAA Girls Tournament of Champions title fell a game short in heart-breaking fashion in the semifinals, Thursday, in a 59-58 loss to Rancocas Valley at the Pine Belt Arena.

game, but Mary Kate Caverly, shooting against two 6-2 players, missed a layup. "She was coming off a pick," said Montano, "but wasn't able to get off a good shot because of their [Rancocas Valley] size.”

The setback, however, failed to dim what had been one of RBC's greatest seasons in which RBC went 29-2 with four championships.

RBC scored the first five points of the game, but the Red Devils rallied for a 13-10 first quarter lead and increased it to 33-22 at the half. "Their size hurt us in the first half," said Montano. "They had 24 offensive rebounds and three girls over six feet. Four of their girls are going to play Division 1 ball in college."

"I don't want to put one team over another," said RBC coach Joe Montano, who has won six Parochial championships including two TOC titles in the past 15 years, "but this was a very enjoyable season. We had a great group of kids that trusted each other and played well together. It was an excellent season and this was as good as it gets." The game itself was a classic, matching two of the state's best teams. Both teams staged major rallies, with thirdseeded RBC rolling up a stunning 25-4 third quarter blitz to erase a 13-point Rancocas Valley lead and the No. 2 seed Red Devils (29-1) rallying from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit. A three-pointer by RBC's Alex Alfano with 30 seconds left gave the Caseys a 58-57 lead, but Rancocas Valley's Dominique Ward scored on a putback with 12 seconds to go for the winning points. RBC's Alex Barazotti dribbled down court and scored on a short jumper for the apparent go ahead points, but Montano had called a time out a second before the shot and it was disallowed.

Page 13

RBC, which has been having third quarter problems all season, found the solution in shocking fashion by outscoring the Red Devils 25-2 after Rancocs Valley scored the first basket of the quarter. RBC finally tied up the game at 37-37 on Caroline Corcoran's three-pointer, and then scored the next 10 points to make it a 47-37 lead entering the final quarter. Then it was Rancocas Valley's turn in the final quarter, and that won the game. "We didn't make any changes in the second half," said Montano, "We just created opportunities for ourselves and it came down to making our shots. Rancoas Valley; however, raised their level of play in the final quarter and made the plays when they needed to." RBC' s lone loss going into Thursday's game was a 48-41 decision to New York power Moore Catholic of Staten Island. RBC won the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood over the Christmas

Holidays, took the A Central Division, probably the strongest in the state, and followed it up with the Shore Conference championship, and the NonPublic A title. They did it with a wellbalanced lineup of Corcoran, Grace Fallon, Barazotti, Alfano and Caverly, all capable of double figures in any given game. RBC will lose Caverly, Corcoran and Alfano, but should have another solid team next year with Fallon, probably the team's best all-around player, and Barazotti coming back. "We also have our top reserve, Quinn McManamen, back along with three freshmen who played jayvee ball this season," said Montano.

By Jason M. Ross, Colts Neck Intern Jersey Shore-At the end of an eventful year for New Jersey hockey teams, especially in the shore, a season began and many teams emerged from the shadows, despite their sub par records and were ready to take on the powerhouses of New Jersey in the state tournament. There were many surprises out of the Shore Conference, especially after a late surge by the Manalapan Braves, who then entered the state playoffs with a low seeding at 28th. Another surprise team from the shore was the Red Bank Regional Bucs. Despite entering at under .500,

the bucs have successfully caped off two early victories in Public B competition. As the 25th seed they impressed many spectators early. Also in public B the Rumson Fair Haven Bulldogs, who as usual, cruised to an early victory in tournament. The Bulldogs were disappointed early in Shore Conference play by Manalapan. After a fantastic Dowd cup final both of the participating teams started off with victories in their respective brackets. Brick Township lost to Ridge in the Quarterfinals, Ridge then went on and was defeated by Randolph, who like last season,

plowed through the state playoffs all the way to capturing another Public A title. In the Public B race, Wall tried to take their early win a step farther in their game versus Chatham, but was successful in their attempt and lost to the would be, B champs. Like Randolph, Chatham too, won the state championship last year. In the always-stacked Non-Public league, NJ’s top ranked powerhouses battled it out across the brackets. Not surprisingly, Delbarton cruised through the competition, but were then unexpectedly faced with Paramus Catholic. Paramus was riding a Cinderella story when they were the 12th seeded team jousting with number 1 seed in the Semifinals. They had knocked off the 5th and 4th seeds prior to their big match up. Yet, this year there was nobody that Delbarton could not handle, after a 10-0 rout, Delbarton punched their ticket to the promise

land. Just below Delby in the brackets lied two common enemies and other powerhouses in the state. Don Bosco Prep and CBA. It was only fitting that the two met to see who would face Delbarton. After another nerve rattling experience and brutally close game Don Bosco came out on top 5-3. Were they destined to defeat Delbarton? The answer was simple, no one was. Delbarton came out victorious with a shutout and wrapped up another state championship. Just as the other two state winners, Delbarton had captured a second state championship consecutively. This was another great year of hockey, where we saw underdogs rise and giants remain victorious. The state is poised for another great year filled with many talented place, and hopefully new Cinderella stories to go along with the incredible progression of New Jersey hockey.

TR South Ends Successful Season in Wrestling By Kevin Davis

For the Toms River South wrestling team, the individual exploits of seniors, B.J. Clagon and Kevin Corrigan during the 2013 NJSIAA championships in Atlantic City, reflected a pair of themes common to the Indians’ season. First, there was Clagon, who continued to build upon a trend he established last year – namely, he never loses. The reliable senior put the finishing touches on his second straight undefeated season by capturing the state championship at 145 pounds, overtaking opponent Troy Heilmann of South Plainfield late in their match to come away with a 2-1 decision win. The state championship was his second in as many years–he won the 138 pound state title in 2012– mak-

ing him the second wrestler in school history to accomplish that feat. However, it was Corrigan’s performance in states that was more emblematic of the Indians’ 2013 fortunes. Competing at 113, Corrigan came tantalizingly close to earning a state championship of his own, only to be edged out by Don Bosco Prep’s Luis Gonzalez in a 5-4 decision loss and finish in second place. Indeed, the second place finish was not an uncommon one for TR South, which also earned top runner-up distinction in the Group 3 and District 24 meets, as well as the Shore Conference Tournament. “(Corrigan) had a chance,” said Toms River South coach Ron Laycock, lamenting his senior’s tough loss at states. “Unfortunately, someone had to lose.” It was far from all heartbreak in big meets for the Indians, however. They managed to convincingly win the South Jersey, Group 3 final over Timber Creek by a 37-14 final and earned a share of the A-South championship for the first time in 31 years.

“From a team perspective, we had a tremendous year,” Laycock said while acknowledging the tough opposition, which exists in the Shore Conference. “We were first or second in every tournament.”
