Wall’s Winning Ways Carry on By Ted Kaiser
WALL TOWNSHIP— The weather has not been perfect this spring, but the Wall baseball team has been very close to perfect. Several media outlets have Wall ranked as the top team in the Shore Conference to this point. The Crimson Knights are 13-1 overall and an undefeated 10-0 in the Class B North Division standings. As of late last week, they held a close to insurmontable three-game lead in the loss column on both Ocean Township and Matawan. That advantage in wins-losses was widened last week with a 6-2 victory over Red Bank Regional. Pitcher Tyler
scoreless into the 7th inning. Orender tripled and drove in another run and Matt Tancredi was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Over the weekend, the Crimson Knights were set to face CBA in a Monmouth County Tournament quarterfinal game.
On Friday, Wall added more distance between them and Matawan with a 5-3 win. Pitcher Robert Patterson held the Huskies to five hits and kept them

HOWELL’S DAWSON JONES WINS SHORE HOW TO TREAT A CONFERENCE GOLF SPRAINED ANKLE TOURNAMENT WITHOUT LIMITS.
COMPETING Glenn Gabisan, MD
By Mike Ready
MILLSTONE – Last year was a season of near misses for Howells first-team All-State golfer, Dawson Jones.
He placed second in the Wall Invitational and Monmouth County Tournament, and third in the Shore Conference Tournament. In the season ending Tournament of Champions he was tied for the lead with two holes to play but had to settle for second to fellow All-State golfer, Luke Graboyes. The outcomes have been quite different so far this season as he has already claimed the seasonopening Wall Invitational and the Monmouth County Tournament. And after shooting a 4-under-par 68 in Monday’s Shore Conference Tournament, you can add that to the list of his victories this season. Jones held a one-stroke lead over Christian Brothers Academy’s Jerry Wall entering the final hole of the tournament, held at the Charleston Springs Golf Course in Millstone. With the two elite shore golfers playing out the eighteenth hole parallel to each other on the ninth and eighteenth holes, Wall failed to sink a six-foot birdie putt while Jones two-putted for par to claim the individual title by a single shot over Wall. The two state-title hopefuls shot their best rounds of the season in this classic ‘down to the wire’ match. Jones’ first place 4-under round of 68 helped Howell place sixth in the team competition with 335 points while Wall’s second place 3-under round of 69 led the Colts

RARITAN SOFTBALL POISED FOR LATE SEASON RUN By Mike Ready
Including the RBC win, the Rockets had won six games in a row before running into division rival Manasquan – ranked No.3 in the shore – April 22. In that game the Rockets held a 4-2 heading into the sixth inning before losing 7-4 after giving up three in the sixth and two in the seventh. The loss was the second of the season to the Warriors (10-1, 8-1), second in Class A Central. Following that loss Raritan reeled off two straight wins, including a 12-2 win over Mater Dei (8-3, 8-2) ranked in the top 10 at the time.
RARITAN SOFTBALL RARITAN – After a highly successful 2013 season that saw the Rockets win 22 games, go 9-5 in the extremely tough Class A Central division and advance to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II finals as the No.7 seed before losing 1-0 to No.1 seed Robbinsville, big things were expected out of this year’s team. Add to the fact that they returned three Asbury Park Press All-Shore players including first teamers Daniella Marino and Emily Schaffer along with thirdteam pick Bethany Evans, the Rockets were the preseason No.2 pick in the Shore Conference, right behind division Issue 4 9 • No.1 e 1and pick St. John Vianney. In that game, the Rockets banged out 13 hits en route to the win as Nicole Coppolino went 2-for-3 with a home run, double and four runs batted in and Nicole Kirse added a two-run double.
Pitching aside, Schaffer is having a monster season at the plate as she leads the Shore Conference in just about every hitting category possible. She tops the list in HR (8), 2B (9), RBI (31), H (25) and BA (.781) and is on pace to win the unprecedented triple crown this season. The Rockets as a team own one of the most explosive offenses in the Shore Conference, scoring 133 runs in 13 games, and have the ability to put up runs at will when they’re clicking on all cylinders. Behind Schaffer, the lineup is loaded. Marino is hitting .545 from the top of the lineup with 2 HR and 24 runs scored. Evans is fifth in the shore with a .625 BA, 2 HR, 16 RBI and 20 runs scored while Coppolino has a .519 BA with 3 HR, 21 RBI and 6 2B. Kirse joins the hit parade with a .556 BA, HR, 13 RBI, 4 2B, 3B and 15 runs scored. Brianna

HUSKIES BASEBALL SWINGING BACK INTO CONTENTION By Eric Braun
Matawan - The Matawan High School baseball team came into this season with some questions about their batting order with the graduation of most of their offensive production a year ago. Coach Bob Carnovsky has been juggling around his batting order early on in the season and seems to have found a consistent rotation that has the Huskies once again making some noise in the B North and at the shore. The Huskies are off to an 8-6 (5-5 B North) record mainly behind the consistent pitching and defense before the offense has picked up steam
as of late. Senior Mike Creamer and senior Joe Piscopo seem to have taken on the leadership and go to guys in the heart of the Huskie order with .333 batting average and .625 batting averages accordingly. Creamer and Piscopo are no strangers to playing in big games and being called upon to carry the load as both are two sport athletes and have gone through some clutch games earlier this year. Creamer was the place kicker for the football team that competed for the NJSIAA State title this past fall and Piscopo was one of the leaders on the

hardwood that helped lead the Huskies to their first ever NJSIAA State title. Nick Santuccio, a senior pitcher who gained valuable innings last year is the ace of the staff and has the Huskies looking primed and ready for a title run this season. Santuccio and sophomore Adam Elliott give Coach Carnovsky a great 1-2 punch. Timely hitting, consistent pitching and solid defense have the Huskies program back on track and making noise at the right time in the season and look to carry their momentum deep into the tournaments.

JASON’S DREAMS FOR KIDS 23RD ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF OUTING SET FOR JUNE 9TH By Mike Ready
RED BANK – Jason’s Dreams for Kids is a small Red Bank based charity that grants wishes to children diagnosed with catastrophic or life-threatening illnesses. Founded by Middletown resident, Dennis McGinnis, they have raised nearly two million dollars and have helped more than 1000 seriously ill children and their families since its inception in 1992. Jason Douglas Creeger, McGinnis’s nephew, was diagnosed with Burkitts
to me ‘You’ve never let me down before Uncle DD; I don’t want to die. But make me a promise that, if I do, you’ll never forget me.’” McGinnis never has. Besides running his own printing business, McGinnis Printing, he spends on the average 30 hours a week running the charity along with his wife, two others processing the books and countless volunteers. The organization has given hundreds of kids and their families the opportunity to throw out first pitches at baseball games, meet with sports stars, fly in a World War II biplane and the most popular; fully paid vacations to Disney World.
He told the story of a little boy name John who had been given three weeks to live. While McGinnis was visiting with John and his family one Sunday, John was visibly upset. They had just come from the cemetery visiting his grandmother’s gravesite and John, knowing he would soon die, wanted to know why there was no rock with his name on it like his grandmothers. He was worried that his mother and father wouldn’t be able talk to him after he died if he didn’t have his own rock.
Lymphoma on April 12, 1991. Following extensive surgery and an aggressive chemotherapy campaign, he started a bone marrow transplant on his 18th birthday, October 5, 1991. Sadly, while waiting for experimental chemotherapy to be approved, the wait proved to be too long and on January 18, 1992, Jason passed away. “I was Jason’s favorite uncle,” McGinnis said. “Kids always have a favorite uncle and I happen to be Jason’s. Jason called me around Christmas to tell me his cancer had come back and to ask for a small Christmas present. He said
“What makes us different is that we’re not a business,” McGinnis said. “We’re an organization that was started off a promise. I do hands-on operation 100 percent. We’re small, but big enough to get done what we need to get done.” As I sat with McGinnis in his office in Red Bank, he recalled story after story of the many wishes he has been able to grant throughout his 23 years of service.
McGinnis’ dedication to Jason’s Dreams for Kids is truly heartfelt. Talking to him, you get the feeling that nothing else matters, that this is why he was put here on earth; it’s his life’s calling. “All I have to do is look, and I can see things in every kid that reminds me of Jason,” McGinnis said. “Everything is done in Jason’s name; I try to find a connecting point to Jason with every one of these kids.”
I cry sad tears, sometimes I cry happy tears. Sometimes I laugh to be laughing and sometimes I laugh so I don’t cry. I just hope when it’s all over, someone say’s I made a difference in their lives.” McGinnis made a difference in Erin Puck’s life, and she’ll be forever grateful. Here’s a note Erin wrote to Dennis that sums up what this man is all about. “I believe there are angels on earth to help people in need and I know that not
As busy as McGinnis is, he tries to keep tabs on all the kids he’s granted wishes to, relishing in those who go on to recover from their illness.
The list of other wishes granted goes on and on, and in many other instances, the foundation has covered medical bills and countless other expenses. The goal is to make life easier and more enjoyable for those kids and families dealing with the unthinkable truth. All of this is accomplished through personal donations, and McGinnis’ business defrays much of the cost of running the organization. Therefore, nearly 90 cents of every donated dollar – along with the proceeds from annual fundraising events such as the upcoming golf tournament, the “Turkey Bowl” football game and a cruise with Santa on Seastreak – go directly to granted wishes for kids and their families.
kid needed to know that his dad could find him when he died; it broke my heart.”
For years, McGinnis carried a coin in his pocket his father had given him when he was a youngster. One day a little boy named David came in to tell him that his cancer had returned and he was going back into the hospital for treatment.
John’s family didn’t have the money for the plot and headstone that would so comfort John in his final days by just knowing that his family would always be able to talk to him. McGinnis left John’s house and drove directly to the funeral home where he wrote out a $6000 check for the plot and headstone. “That was one of the most important things I ever did for a kid,” McGinnis quietly said as he wiped away a few stray tears rolling down his cheek. “I don’t mean to get upset, but that little
“He told me how scared he was,” McGinnis said. “So I reached into my pocket for my coin, told him the story behind it, stuck it in his little hand and asked him to return it to me when his cancer was gone. He said ‘do you think it will go away’ and I said ‘that’s not up to me, that’s for the man upstairs, you just keep that with you and bring it back when your cancer’s gone.’ Nine and a half years later, I get a knock at the door. It’s an 18 year old man and he looks at me and says ‘do you know who I am?’ I knew right away it was David and he was 100 percent cancer free.” McGinnis now gives a special Jason’s Dreams for Kids coin to every child he helps, hoping that each coin finds its way back into his pocket. “It’s changed my life helping these kids,” McGinnis reflected. “Sometimes
all angels wear wings; because I met an angel who wears cowboy boots and speaks with a southern drawl. I know this angel not only grants wishes to children, but with each wish, gives a piece of his heart.” Jason’s Dreams for Kids 23rd Annual Golf Outing will be held on June 9, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Beacon Hill Country Club in Atlantic Highlands, N.J. Rumson - Coming into this season the Rumson Lady Bulldog golfers had several goals in place for this season. After a successful 2013 campaign where they went 15-1, a third place finish in both the Shore Conference and Shore Conference Tournaments, the Bulldogs are looking to improve on both and State finals. This season they are off to an 8-4 start and again another third place finish in the Monmouth County Tournament with a team score of 406, behind second place Colts Neck (405) and Red Bank Catholic (367). With recent wins over Saint John Vianney and Saint Rose, Rumson sits in great position at another great Shore Conference and NJSIAA Sectional Title runs. Coach John Pennetti added about the competition ahead of them at the Shore Conference Tournament, “behind RBC, we are all pretty close in level of competition, they are good teams and we love the competition.” When asked about this year’s squad, Coach Pennetti said, “they are tough [a] competitor and continue to work to get better every time out.” Tournament time seems to be an annual tradition at Rumson as once

RED BANK— The Red Bank Catholic boys’ volleyball team is having another strong season this spring. The Caseys are 9-5 overall and 7-2 in the Class A Central Division where only Wall is ahead of RBC for the overall division lead. They recently clinched the Non-Public crown with a 2-0 (25-9, 25-14) win over Long Branch. Center Tyler Connolly had five digs and 13 assists. Ike Isenhour had seven kills and two blocks. “We knew we would have a very competitive team going into the season, despite not having a lot of depth,” says head coach Ryan Bogdan. “But guys have worked hard to pick up the game plan and I am very pleased with how the team is doing.” RBC has received strong play from outside hitters Mac Taylor, who leads the team with 97 kills, and JP Legrottaglie, second in kills at 84. Legrottaglie also has a team-leading 23 aces. Pat Toomey and Ike Isenhour have led the middle attack. Toomey has 31 total blocks and Isenhour has 16 total blocks. Pat Meehan anchors the de-
fense with 78 digs and Thomas Clagett has 48 digs and 16 total blocks. “One of the big things for us is the balance that we have,” explains Bogdan. “Tyler Connolly (237 assists) at center does a good job of running the offense and keeping everybody involved.” Next week RBC will tune up for the postseason with a nondivisional game on Tuesday at Toms River North, another nondivisional game Wednesday at home versus Marlboro, and close out the division schedule on Thursday against Barnegat. The Shore Conference Tournament will begin the week of May 12th. “The key for us is to improve our service receive defense. We have made good strides there because it is key in terms of running our offense,” Bogdan says. If the Caseys can tighten up a few critical areas of play, they will be a factor in the upcoming Shore Conference Tournament and NJSIAA tournament.

HOLMDEL GIRLS GOLF COMING ON STRONG By Eric Braun
Holmdel - Coming off two successful season where the Holmdel girls golf program went 6-3 in 2012 and last year 5-3, the Hornets had all the momentum and high expectations for this season. The Hornets’ rotation took an early blow when their number one golfer, Paulina Miller, was diagnosed with Lymes Disease. “We are thankful that she is on the mend, but Paulina was unable to play at all this year.” That left Coach Geraldine Semenza searching for someone to take the reins and lead Holmdel towards their preseason goals of competing for Monmouth County, Shore Conference and NJSIAA Sectional Titles.

Disappointed by not making qualifying for the Shore Conference Tournament, the Hornets battled but came
up just short finishing fourth at the Monmouth County Championships behind Rumson (406), Colts Neck (405) and Red Bank Catholic (367). The team, which is led by sophomore Haley Mander is excited to compete with the top teams in the Shore Conference and States. Haley Mander has had yet another terrrific season, coming off an All-Shore freshman season last year, and becoming a true team leader. Freshman Mehr Sawant has also had a great season, with yet another freshman Sharvya Jasti in the #3 spot. Mander qualified for the Shore Conference Tournament with a fifth place finish at the Monmouth County Championships, shooting a 93. After the loss of Miller, Coach Semenza com-
mented, “I cannot be more proud of the play of the rest of the team. We have a very young team with all freshmen and sophomores. I’m looking at the States as a very good learning experience for this young team, and you never know what could happen.” After their fourth place finish at the Monmouth County Championships, Holmdel has rattled off 3-1 record with wins over Rumson, Freehold Boro and Marlboro and their lone loss to Colts Neck. The young Hornets look primed and ready after competing against some tough Shore Conference competition and concludes their regular season versus Red Bank Catholic, Wall, Saint John Vianney and Marlboro before they head into the NJSIAA sectionals

Gluten Free Brings New Dishes To The Table Know what makes a restaurant popular? The managers take their guests’ suggestions to heart. They listen and learn from their guests. They took note when the number of diners inquiring about gluten-free dishes increased a couple of seasons ago, and since then have instituted an easy to identify gluten-free program for its menu. Now there are over 15 dishes that are designated as gluten-free by a little (g). BULLDOGS ADVANCE IN MONMOUTH COUNTY TOURNAMENT By Mike Ready
RUMSON – Pitching in weather hardly conducive to spring baseball, junior righty Morgan Maguire ignored the elements while tossing a one-hit shutout in Rumson Fair Haven’s 6-0 win over Marlboro in first-round action of the Monmouth County Tournament. Maguire struck out eight in the complete game win, including the final batter of the game for his fourth win of the season. The Old Dominion recruit recorded seven first-pitch outs, relying on his changeup early in the count inducing Marlboro’s aggressive lineup into swinging early. “Morgan’s a bulldog, he throws strikes and doesn’t go deep into counts,” Rumson coach Kevin James said. “His approach today was let them put the ball in play and let our defense take care of it; our defense has been playing much better. He threw his fastball and his changeup; they’re a very aggressive offensive team so they were swing early in the count at his off speed stuff. When you’re getting seven first-pitch outs that’s a great day; it saves a lot of pitches.” In the first four innings, Maguire gave up his only hit but retired 12-of-the- 13 batters he faced before the weather really took a turn for the worse. “It was cold and hard to get a grip on the ball,” Maguire said. “As soon as the rain started coming down the ball really got slippery, but I just kept trying to throw strikes. My changeup and fastball were really working today; my changeup was my out pitch. Even with the weather the way it was, I felt great out there today.” The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth when the Bulldogs (8-5, 6-5) put three runs on the board. Leadoff batter Billy Lyons drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball only to be picked off on a disputed play at second. First baseman Alex Riguardi then reached on an infield single before Maguire lined a single into right centerfield to put men on first and second. Third baseman Thomas Culligan walked to load the bases and Max Goione brought in a run on a fielder’s choice when he was safe at first. With runners now on the corners, Marlboro starting lefty Cory Goldstein uncorked a wild pitch with Goione advancing to second. Designated hitter Chris Jewett then lined a single to drive in Lucas Scinto – running for Maguire – and Culligan was allowed to score on an interference call to make it 3-0 Dog’s. As the rain intensified, Maguire issued walks to the No.1 and No.2 batters in the top of the fifth. He then struck out the final two hitters after

Marlboro’s Kyle Ondar was caught in a run down and tagged out for the first out of the inning. In the sixth, with one out and runners at first and second after walking two and striking out one, Maguire induced a grounder to second for a perfect 5-3 double play to end the inning. The Bulldogs gave Maguire another three runs to work with in the bottom of the sixth. Lyon’s led off with a rocket that ricocheted off the third baseman for a single, and after two ground outs, two walks loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Kenny Farrarri then came up to bat and drilled a three-run double over the center fielders head for a 6-0 lead. Maguire retired the side in order in the seventh; striking out the final batter to put an exclamation point on the win. “We’re now in the next round; the quarterfinals of the Monmouth County Tournament,” James said. “Any time you have a playoff game it’s really nice to win. We’re very fortunate this year to have two arms in Shane McCarthy and Morgan Maguire, and every time you hand them the ball we have a good chance to win.” “Survive and advance, that’s what it’s all about now,” Maguire said. “A lot of my teammates are seniors and I’d love for us to make a run for them. We’ve got to ‘pick up the ball’ like coach says, and have good at bats.” Maguire, also one of the top hitters in the Shore Conference, went 1-for3 with two runs scored. Riguardi went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Jewett had the 2-run single. Rumson, seeded No.5, moves on to play No.13 seed Freehold Township (9-4, 5-4) in the quarterfinals. The Patriots are ranked No.2 in the latest Shore Sports Network top ten poll, but lost a 4-1 decision on Monday to one of the hottest pitchers in the Shore Conference, CBA’s Luca Dalarti. Before that loss, they had won six games in a row and eightout-of-nine.

CBA CREW STANDS OUT AT 2014 NEW JERSEY STATE ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS Camden - April 27, 2014- The Garden State Scholastic Rowing Championships took place this past Saturday on the Cooper River in Camden with almost 40 high schools competing and over 280 boats racing for the coveted state championship titles. Several schools from our area competed, including CBA, Ranney and Rumson Fair Haven. CBA was a clear standout with seven of their eight boats reaching the finals and five walking away with medals, including three state titles. Last year’s season for CBA was one of the strongest in the program’s ten year history including several state, regional and national titles. Through the guidance of head coach Scott Belford, the team is well positioned for another strong season. This past weekend’s success bodes well for the Colts as they took home three golds, a silver and a bronze at the competition. “The weather this spring has been dreadful and a lot of teams have struggled to find water time” said Belford. “That led to a lot of uncertainty going into the state championships. We couldn’t have been more pleased with the results.”

Toms River South’s Frank Wins 800th Game By Sean Simmons
TOMS RIVER—Toms River South baseball coach Ken Frank won his 800th game on April 26th when the Indians defeated visiting Bayonne, 7-2 in a non-conference game at Ken Frank Stadium. “I have had great players and assistant coaches over the years and this is a great accomplishment,” Frank said. “It never gets old and it’s about tradition here.”
Playing in the first game he was eligible to play after transferring from Toms River East, Tyler Folger gave the TR South fans something to cheer about by tossing a complete game six-hitter and also helped his own cause by going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. “Folger was the MVP of the game for us and it was nice to bounce back from a tough 4-3 loss against Southern,” Frank said.

Ray Liquori and Ryan each singled in a run in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively to give Folger all the run support he needed.

Liquori also made the defensive play of the game in the sixth inning with a backhand stab at third base with the bases loaded and one out turning what would have been an extra-base hit into a huge out for the Indians. “If Liquori didn’t make that play, Bayonne would have scored two or three
runs and it would have been a whole different ballgame,” Frank said. Frank picked up his first coaching victory at TR South against Monmouth Regional on April 1, 1978 at Walnut Street Elementary School in Toms River. Monmouth Regional was the heavy favorite coming into the game behind ace pitcher Rich Deady, but Mike Garrity pitched a gem for the Indians leading them to an impressive 8-2 win. Frank also became the state’s all-time winningest coach in April 2012 when the Indians beat Southern for victory No. 755. “It was nice to see Garrity in attendance at the Bayonne game,” Frank said. “I am happy with the way the season has been going and we play in a very tough A South Division.”
