Seraphs Upset Top Seed in Softball

MIDDLETOWN— The Mater Dei Prep softball team made another one of their trademark postseason runs in the state playoffs this year.

The Seraphs reached the Non-Public South B sectional final as the fifth seed in the bracket knocking off the fourth and top seed along the way. Coach Jeanne Dickinson guided her team one step further than last season’s semifinal appearance, but just short of repeating the magic from the 2008 sectional championship.

In the opening round, Mater Dei Prep crushed Marist 12-2. The Seraphs pounded out 12 hits while freshman sensation pitcher Paige Fernandez held Marist to only one hit. Fernandez struck out eight batters and walked just two.

The offense cruised out to seven runs in the first two innings. Fernandez added three RBIs and senior third baseman Emilie Boman had two home runs and four RBIs. Senior catcher Erin Batz also clubbed a home run as part of the onslaught.

The Seraphs faced top seed Wardlaw-Hartridge in the semifinals. Despite the lower ranking, Mater Dei was not lacking confidence. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then scored in each of the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to build an advantage. The Seraphs went on to rout the #1 seed by a score of 9-1. Sophomore Maggie Klatt had a pair of RBIs and freshman shortstop Tyrah Graves

Toms River - Coming into the NJSIAA State Group I Championship game against Ridgefield, Shore Regional was looking to ride the wave of success that had gotten them to this point. Looking to capture the school’s first title since 1993 and second overall, the Blue Devils were going to need a big game from senior pitcher Matt Cosentino and some timely hitting.

Shore (19-9) was already battled tested this season playing in a rugged Shore Conference A Central division against the likes of RBC, SJV and RFH which got them prepared for the remarkable run they were on in the States. Shore earned the

right to be in the finals knocking off last season’s Central Jersey Group I Champion Middlesex and then Pennsville who was supposed to be the class of Group I. Someone forgot to send the memo to Shore Regional that they were not supposed to be here and the Blue Devils made believers out of everyone with another dominating performance against Ridgefield in the Group I Championship with a convincing 7-1 victory.

Cosentino had one message for his teammates and that was, “get me the lead and I will shut them down.” The Blue Devils battled the first two innings get a runners on base in scoring position in the first and second inning but came up empty. In the third inning the Blue Devils finally opened the scoring when Clayton Coffey led off with a single and stole second. After Andrew Schulz lined out to left field and Cosentino struck out James Kelly roped a two-out double to score Coffey and put Shore up 1-0.

This was the run Cosentino was hoping for and from the third inning on he found his grove attacking the hitters taking time in between pitches and keeping the potent offense for Ridgefield off balance. Cosentino

added to his Championship highlight reel in the bottom of the third when with no one out and a runner on first, Cosentino made an incredible over the shoulder diving catch and then quickly threw to first for the double play to halt any momentum Ridgefield was looking to build on.

Cosentino added to his 2014 postseason success by striking out 9 and allowing just 3 hits on the day. This postseason he allowed just 11 hits and struck out 22 in 21 innings of work. The George Washington University bound senior couldn’t have drawn up a better exit to his high school career then his dominating pitching performance, but he had one more magical moment. Cosentino snapped a 0-for-13 slump in his final high school at bat, belting a 2-1 pitch over the right-center field fence at Ken Frank Stadium to put Shore up 6-1.

Afterwards Cosentino remarked about his at bat and ending to his high school career by saying, “going out with an at bat like that and winning with this group of players that I’ve played with since grammar school and to leave this field as Group I State Champs is an unbelievable feeling.”

Holmdel’s Chen Undefeated Tennis Champion

HOLMDEL— It was a tennis season to remember for Holmdel’s Mike Chen. The junior completed an undefeated season by winning the NJSIAA boys tennis singles championship at Mercer County Park on June 5th. Chen bested Millburn’s Tyler Schick 6-3, 6-1 to capture the crown and put an exclamation point on his superb season-long performance. He was the first player in Holmdel history to win the state singles title.

“This was probably some of the best tennis I have ever played, and it feels great that I was able to do it in such an important match like this,” explained an ecstatic Chen.

Chen was able to cap off his run to the championship after getting past Pingry’s Jeff Zucker in a real battle during the quarterfinals (67, 7-5, 6-3). That match would

prove to be the defining one of the tournament for Chen. It was especially important because he had lost in the quarterfinals in the two previous seasons. To get past the quarterfinal round, exorcised some demons for the junior who advanced farther in the state tournament than anyone in the Shore Conference over those two years.

His freshman and sophomore seasons were spectacular. Chen went undefeated at second singles as a freshman. As a sophomore at first single, he had a 32-3 record and was in undefeated in Shore Conference play.

Chen also helped Holmdel reach a third straight Group II final, but this year the Hornets fell after two championships in a row. They did, however, win their sixth straight Shore Conference Tournament title.

Lancers Capture NJSIAA Non Public A Title

TOMS RIVER - A team that loses an important game to a top rival sometimes falls into a slump, but that was certainly not the case with the St. John Vianney baseball team.

The Lancers lost to Red Bank Catholic, a team that it had beat in two earlier games, May 17, in the Shore Conference Tournament, but they came back to make a spectacular run in the NJSIAA Non-Public A Tournament, knocking off four state ranked teams capped by a 3-1 win over St. Joseph's of Montcale in the title game Saturday.

"After the RBC game, we got together and said to ourselves that we were a lot better then this," said winning pitcher Jusin Chin.

"People were doubting us, but we showed everybody what type of team we had."

In winning the title, Chin was the winning pitcher as SJV upset state powers Bishop Eustace, Gloucester Catholic and St. Joseph's.

“I'm speechless right now," said Chin (10-1), "what a way to go out."

SJV opened the scoring with a run in the second inning when

Joe Rotelli doubled, moved to second on Anthony Lavigne's sacrifice and scored on an error.

"This is like winning the World Series," said Rotelli. "They (NJSIAA) had us seeded eighth, but we came all the way back and won today.

SJV added its other two runs in the third on walks to Chris Loney and Chris Morris and Lavigne's two-run single. The Rumson Fair Haven boys’ lacrosse team has quickly become a lacrosse dynasty as they recently finished another successful season (17 wins and 4 loss record) winning an unprecedented fourth straight Shore Conference Tournament title by defeating Southern by the score of 17 to 10 in a rematch of last year’s SCT final which Rumson also won by the score of 14 to 5,.

A lot of expectations were placed on the squad during the pre-season after a 22-10 season in 2013 that included their fourth straight trip to the Central Jersey Group II final.

The Rockets, by most standards, still had a fantastic season with 19 wins.

A big reason for that was the performance of senior pitcher/catcher/infielder/ outfielder Emily Schaffer.

The Rockets had been knocked out of the state playoffs earlier in May by A.L. Johnson. They had a good start in their bid for a fifth consecutive trip to the sectional final with an 11-1 win over Manchester in the opener.

JANOFSKY LOSES NO-HIT BID IN SEVENTH; PITCHES JACKSON TO GROUP IV CHAMPIONSHIP

TOMS RIVER – After walking two Roxbury batters in the first inning and hitting the lead-off man in the second inning, Jackson pitcher Brandon Janofsky got a visit to the mound from pitching coach J.M. Gold.

Gold, who pitched for pitched at Toms River North from 1995-98 and was the Milwaukee Brewers’ first round draft choice and No.13 pick overall in the 1998 draft, said it was clear Janofsky was pitching better out of the stretch when he had men on base.

Janofsky got out of the first two innings with a strikeout looking in the first and three-straight groundouts in the second on his way to a one-hit classic. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the Jaguars (20-7) made two fourth-inning runs hold up to beat Roxbury, 2-0, to win their first Group title since 1972 when they won Group III.

Leading off the bottom of the seventh, relief pitcher Timmy Pilrun tapped a slow roller up the middle. Jaguar second baseman John Carello charged and bare-handed it to first as he fell to the ground; his throw just beating Pilrun to the bag and preserving the no-hitter with two outs to go.

Janofsky then worked the count to 0-and-2 on Roumes and thought he had him struck out on a two-strike fastball, but a ball was called to the chagrin of the Jackson dugout and their die-hard fans.

Roumes then quieted the crowed by lining a clean single into left field to not only break up the nohitter but give his team new life.

“I really don’t think the 0 (no-hitter) mattered to him,” Jaguar coach Frank Malta said. “What mattered to him was that pile at the end and that trophy at the end.”

In his complete game seven-inning one-hit shutout Janofsky, only a junior, struck out seven, walked three and hit a batter.

With Saturday’s win, he finishes his first season as a pitcher with a record of 7-0 and an earnedrun average of 0.89 in 47 innings pitched. During the NJSIAA Tournament, he went 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA, 15 hits allowed, 27 strikeouts and only seven walks while hurling three complete games.

The way Janofsky was now mowing down one Gael after another; rumblings of a no-hitter had begun to circulate throughout the standing-roomonly crowd as early as the fifth inning. Now, entering the bottom of the seventh with the no-hitter still intact and holding a 2-0 lead, the bi-partisan crowd was hanging on Janofsky’s every pitch.

“I became aware of it after the fourth inning, but I tried not to say anything,” Janofsky said. “Honestly, I don’t think I talked to a sole in the dugout today.”

“That was the biggest hit of my life,” Perrizzo said. “The first pitch was an off-speed pitch and I was looking for it all the way and I got it; it feels great.”

“I was thinking off-speed pitch, but at 2-and-0 I got a fastball right down the middle,”Demaio said. “It was nice giving Brandon a little insurance. In a 1-0 game your pitcher has to be perfect and Brnadon was perfect today; it didn’t matter what the score was.”

“He said, ‘Coach, can I stay in the stretch?’ I said, ‘Brandon, whatever works for you,’” Gold said. “It was his decision and he made all the right decisions Saturday.”

Janofsky was virtually unhittable after beaning designated hitter Craig Roumes leading off the second. He retired the next 15-of-16 batters he faced entering the seventh, with a fifth-inning walk being his lone blemish.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, sophomore third baseman Kyle Johnson lined a 3-2 pitch into right center for the games first hit. Centerfielder Joe Maugeri bobbled the ball allowing the speedy Johnson to take second base. After Matt Guarino fouled out to right, senior Mike Petrizzo lined a double down the left field line scoring Johnson form second for a 1-0 lead.

Two pitches later, junior center fielder Joe Demaio hammered a 1-0 pitch off the right centerfield wall for an RBI triple and all the runs the Jaguars would need the rest of the way.

Even though he got out of those first two innings unscathed, Janofsky wasn’t feeling comfortable on the mound and in particular out of the windup.

“That was something I did for the first time ever,” Janofsky said. “I just felt more comfortable pitching out of the stretch when I had men on base early.

So I asked if I could stay in the stretch; I never tried that before for a whole game and it obviously worked.”

Coming into the game, Roxbury (25-8-1) was ranked No.13 in the state and was in the midst of one their most successful seasons ever. They won the Morris County Tournament, won a sectional title for the first time since 2001, set school records for victories (25) and winning streaks (16) and were making their first-ever trip to a state final.

Unperturbed, Janofsky remained focused while exhibiting an incredible calmness on the mound for a pitcher with so much riding on his shoulders.

Now, with the no-hitter gone and the potential tying run at the plate, Janofsky struck out Gaels right fielder Kyle Macrae for the second out and induced third baseman Stephen Loreng to ground out to third baseman Kyle Johnson to end the game and put the finishing touches on a remarkable post-season run.

“This is Brandon’s first year pitching and we tried to save him a little bit,” Malta said. “We started him early then sort of shut him down, having him throw in relief. Once we got to post season we took the chains off him and let the dogs run; he’s been unbelievable.”

Roxbury pitcher Nick Busby was a perfect 8-0 entering the game and retired the first nine batters he faced in order entering the fourth inning.

“We saw what he was doing, pitching backwards, keeping us off balance with a lot of breaking balls,” Malta said. “Before we hit in the fourth we said we were not going to swing at the fastball.

“This town really deserves a state champion, I just love Jackson and I love this team,” Janofsky said.

“Three weeks ago I don’t think anyone could’ve imagined this and most everyone wrote us off.

But we came together as a team and we won as a team.”

“We knew what we had here and we knew we had work to do,” Malta said. “We challenged our guys and when I say challenged ... I mean, you didn’t want to be around us. We changed some things that got our offense going, and as a team we became more consistent. That fourth inning was a microcosm of what this season was about for us. It was making the adjustment and doing what it takes to have this celebration; I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”

US ARMY A STAPLE AT THE JERSEY SHORE

Old Bridge- For years the United States Army called the Jersey Shore home with the military base at Fort Monmouth located in the heart of Tinton Falls. A military base that’s main function was the post to several units of the U.S. Army Materiel Command and offices of the Army Acquisition Executive (AAE) that research and manage Command and Control, Communications, Computing, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) capabilities and related technology, as well as an interservice organizations designed to coordinate C4ISR, an academic preparatory school, an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) unit, a garrison services unit, an Army health clinic, and a Veterans Administration Health clinic. Other agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Emergency management Agency and the National Security Agency, also had presences on the post.

The post officially closed September 15, 2011, but that has not stopped the Army from continuing their strong presence around the Jersey Shore, athletics and educational facilities. As Company Commander Captain Steve Austin, enrolled in 2004 and has done three tours in Iraq, pointed out at the NHRA event in Old Bridge, it is becoming harder to recruit kids from the schools since they are getting kick back from several communities that do not support the wars and military avenues. This has not stopped Cpt. Austin and fellow recruited Sergeant First Class Jose Gonzalez, two tours in Iraq, from continuing to push to bring the kids in to talk about what the Army has to offer them. For both, being in the Army has opened

several avenues both educational and personal growth, which they talk about with incoming recruits.

The Army’s new approach and push to bring in the men and women looking to serve is an approach called STEM. STEM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. This new age of soldiers bring so much more the soldier of old, with their technology backgrounds. Those that are willing to learn and continue their education in these fields while earning valuable life lessons in discipline, teamwork and mental toughness, can build themselves a bright and wonderful future for themselves and their families. Specialized skills are part of every U.S. Army job. If you have a particular aptitude for science, technology, engineering or mathematics, here are some Army careers and jobs that will put your analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities to the test. Whether Officer or enlisted, each offers experience and skills with applications in the Army and beyond. During the hospitality session at the recent NHRA event, US Army Top Fuel Dragster Tony Schumacher added that his belief and trust in his race team is the same standards that the Army soldier have with each other. Schumacher while speaking about his team added that today’s youth are being taught the wrong values in life with trophies for first to last place and that everyone wins. Noting that he loves that fact that his crew takes more out of learning from their defeats then their wins.

Teaching and learning from your defeats makes you work harder and hungrier to get back out there. Teaching our kids that it is ok to fail and reward everyone with praise and trophies is not the right path according to Tony. These are the same values that drives the Army and their teaching and drills for their recruits. Have trust and faith in your teammates and learn from every encounter.

Same can be said with the US Army and their ties to the Shore Conference football teams. Every year the US Army hosts the Shore Gridiron Classic, known too many as “the MonmouthOcean game,” the US Army All Shore Gridiron Classic matches recently graduated football players from the Shore Conference

High School’s and for some it’s their final game they will ever strap on a uniform while for some it is the end of their high school careers and the beginning of their collegiate careers. Along with the US Army the game is presented by the Shore Football Coaches Foundation. Along with the SFCF, the US Army provides one last hoorah for these seniors to work along-side new teammates but still have the same goal in mind and that is to compete, work hard and win.

LANCERS REBOUND IN BIG WAY TO WIN SHORE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP

WALL TOWNSHIP – After being eliminated in Tuesday’s NJSIAA Non-Public South A semifinal and therefore missing the state final for the first time since 2009, there was no way Saint John Vianney was going to let this game get away from them.

Add to the fact that they hadn’t won the SCT title since 2011 when this year’s seniors were only freshman and you have recipe for disaster if you’re the opposing team. Unfortunately, for third-seeded Pineland (27-3) they were that team.

Relying on years of tournament and playoff experience, the Lancers came out loose and confident while the Wildcats - playing in their first-ever SCT final – let their inexperience take over en route to a 12-0 five inning loss at Wall Township High School.

Playing as the visiting team, the topseeded Lancers came to bat in the top of the first and quickly put three runs on the board. A walk and an error off shortstop Corine Huber’s glove put runners on the corners with two outs before catcher Michelle King beat out an infield hit scoring pinch runner Demi Rivera from third.

Jessica Carlucci then singled to left to bring home Katie Baron, who had reached on the error, and Gianna Mavica followed with a single to center driving in Victoria Mahoney, running for King.

Carlucci went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run and three RBI. In the top of the second, the Lancers tacked on another three runs – all unearned – when the Wildcats committed three errors in the inning. Senior third baseman Marlena Bevilacqua had the only hit of the inning and also stole a base.

“I’m glad we picked up our game after yesterday,” Bevilacqua said. “That was

a really tough loss, but we bounced back. We had to put it behind us and end on a high note, especially for the seniors.”

Lancers junior pitcher Ashley Ventura retired the first six batters she faced in order before running into her only trouble of the game in the bottom of the third.

Lexi Carmen dropped a single into short centerfield to lead off the inning.

After a strikeout and a fielder’s choice out at second, pitcher Naomi Stas (224) reached on an infield hit and stole second putting runners on second and third with two outs. Ventura then got senior Emma Neuweiler on strikes to end the inning in true Ventura fashion.

Saint John Vianney blew the game wide open in the top of the fourth scoring six runs on six hits and two walks, including Baron’s RBI double and Carlucci’s line-drive two-run homer over the left field fence.

“I’m proud of the way my team came out and played today,” said Baron, who will play for Monmouth University next year. “I’m just glad the seniors get to go out with a win after yesterday’s depressing loss. We overcame a lot of injuries this year and this SCT title means a lot, not only to the seniors, but to everyone who worked so hard to get here.”

Three batters after the Carlucci blast, senior and four-year starter Jackie Gallagher, who was hitless in three at bats, came to the plate with the bases loaded in probably her final at bat as a Lancer.

Down to her last strike, coach Kim Lombardi called her over for a short pep talk.

“She said, ‘You deserve this hit. So keep your head down and hit it,’” Gallagher said. “I knew it was my last time up so I had to focus. I’m never going to play softball again so it was good to win this.”

Gallagher, who will attend Fairfield University next fall where she’ll play field hockey, promptly lined a two-run single into centerfield scoring Mavica and Megan Masi, increasing the lead to 11-0, before Helena Coppola capped the scoring with a single to left to bring in Bevilacqua, who had singled and moved to third on Gallagher’s hit.

Ventura, who allowed only three hits, struck out three and didn’t walk a batter retired the side in order in the top of the fifth for her 26th win of the season with Bevilacqua handling an easy pop up for the final out of the game and of her career as a Lancer.

“It was like a perfect ending catching the final out,” the Fairleigh Dickinson recruit said. “It was hit high in the air so I had time to think about that, but I was also thinking ‘I better not drop this.’ As seniors this is what we’re going to always remember, this is special, this is what we have to hold on too.”

Senior Katie Beriont, an All-State pitcher as a junior last season, but out all season with a knee injury, celebrated with her teammates and was proud the way her team battled all season. “It was awesome, I got to see them grow as a team this year and I felt like I was a little bit of a teacher and coach this year. I’m so happy for them all, they deserve it.”

Beriont will be off to the University of Notre Dame next week where she’ll be pitching for the Fighting Irish next spring in South Bend, Indiana.

“Coming off yesterday’s loss our team could’ve gone two different ways,” Lombardi said. “Prior to the game I talked to them about how important it was to win and they responded. The seniors started their freshmen year with a SCT title and what a way to go out with another. I’ll definitely miss them.”
