RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN GIRLS LACROSSE CAPTURE NJSIAA SOUTH GROUP II TITLE By Mike Ready
game for the Bulldogs from the draw circle. The Bucknell-bound Steinhacker won 18-of-20 draws including 10-of-11 in the first half and 8-of-9 in the second giving Rumson possession for lengthy periods of time for what seemed like the entire game. She also had two goals, scoring the first goal of the second half that gave the Bulldogs a 9-2 lead and essentially ended any prayer of a comeback by the Caseys.
Sophomore attackers Brittany Bruno and Elizabeth Scarrone and Villanova-bound Jillian Swikart all had three goals to their credit with Scarrone, who has committed to Vanderbilt, adding an assist as did Bruno.
“Morgan’s been amazing on the draw,” O’Keefe said. “Without her I don’t think the games would’ve been nearly as marginal. So there might’ve been a change in our record for sure. The effort she puts into it is amazing.”
The Bulldogs get the chance to avenge their loss to Summit in last season’s sectional final
Ohio State-bound Emily Schissler potted her 25th goal of the season along with three assists and Villanova recruit Maggie Jennings netted her 46th of the year.
“It’s taken time, I kind off taught myself in seventh and eighth grades and from there progressed on,” Steinhacker said. “It feels amazing; we worked so hard for this. We come to practice every day working for this; it’s awesome.”
RUMSON – Top-seeded Rumson-Fair Haven beat second-seeded Red Bank Catholic 14-5 to reclaim the NJSIAA South Group II title Wednesday at Rumson’s Borden Stadium.
Shore Conference’s second-leading goal-scorer Cameron Lynch (86 goals) to a mere two goals, and 52 goal scorer Olivia Farrington to only one.
It’s their first state sectional title since 2011 and third overall in program history. It also marked their third-straight appearance in a sectional final after losing to Summit 13-6 in last season’s North Group II final and to Allentown 13-12 in the 2013 South Group II final.
“I’ve been really proud of my defense this year,” Bulldog head coach Amy O’Keefe said. “We’ve been able to keep the scores down pretty well. They’ve really stepped up huge for us.”
Including their victory Wednesday, the Bulldogs (23-1) have reeled off 22-consecutive wins including going 17-0 versus Shore Conference teams. They’re ranked No.5 in the state and first in the Shore Conference and earlier this month Rumson won their third-straight Shore Conference Tournament title easily outing Shore Regional 17-5.
Rumson’s unheralded star, junior midfielder Morgan Steinhacker, had another monster
The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead and led 8-1 with 20 seconds left in the first half when the Caseys Ariana Mancini worked her way into close range to score her 38th goal of the season. However, any momentum the Caseys gained by Mancini’s last-second goal was lost after Steinhacker’s first goal of the second half, four minutes into it. The two teams traded goals after that before the Bulldogs ran off three in a row to take a 13-4 lead with 4:36 remaining in the game. RBC’s Amanda Murphy scored a meaningless goal with 29.2 seconds left and Rumson’s junior midfielder Alexandra Geiger put the finishing touches on the game netting her 17th goal of the year at the final buzzer.
as they will face the No.3 ranked Hilltoppers (18-4) in Saturday’s NJSIAA Group II final at Kean University with the winner advancing into the Tournament of Champions. “Summit is definitely a tough team,” Steinhacker said. “We’re going to have to play our best against them but we definitely have a chance and the team has worked hard enough to get there.” “We’ve come so close,” O’Keefe said. “We feel we have a really good shot to get to that T.O.C. (Tournament of Champions) and I think this team can do it. We have a lot of people saying we have a chance, so hopefully we can.”
The juggernaut Bulldogs steamrolled their way through NJSIAA South Group II bracket, outscoring their four opponents by a combined score of 64-14 and appear destined to add another program first by winning their firstever state group title. There’s not a hotter team in the state than Bulldogs and they appear to be clicking on all cylinders at just the right time and seem to be taking on an aura of invincibility. It’s hard to pinpoint one facet of the game that makes this team so good because they excel in all phases of the game. In Wednesday’s win, the defense, led by sophomore Caitie Clark, junior Madison Maquire and seniors Olivia Rosenberg and Kathleen Scarrone completely bottled up a very potent Red Bank Catholic offense. They held the

The Shore Regional girls’ lacrosse team has had a super season with a 19-5 record (9-1 in A Central Division). The Blue Devils reached the finals of the Shore Conference Tournament and won a sectional title before moving on to play for a group championship, but lost to Oak Knoll by the score of 13 to 4. In that game, Mary Kate George had 2 goals while Allie Reiser and Lauren Britton each scored a goal in the loss. In the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I final, Shore defeated Holy Cross by the score of 7 to 6 to win the sectional title. Becca Witshel scored her third goal of the game with seven minutes left in the game as the
Blue Devils hung on for the win and the title. Allie Reiser had scored three minutes earlier to tie the game after Shore was ahead 4 to 1 at halftime, but Holy Cross scored 5 goals to take the lead. Head coach Doug Dudzinski thought the game was win on defense and was proud of his defense consisting of Shannon Bonner. Emily Olsen and Megan Racioppi, who all did a superb job, as did goalie Sarah Giordano, who had some key saves in the game. The coach said, “She was amazing in goal all day and made the key stops when we needed them and has been doing it all year.” On offense, Shore also got goals from Sarah and Mary Kate George.
In their semi final game, the Blue Devils defeated Pingry by the score of 7 to 6. Sarah George had 5 goals in the game, while Allie Reiser and Lauren Britton each added a goal in the game. Giordano got the win in goal making 5 saves. This season Shore also reached the finals of the Shore Conference Tournament, but came up short in the final by the score of 17 to 5. Lauren Britton scored 3 goals while Sarah and her sister Mary Kate George each scored a goal for the Blue Devils. Giordano did the best she could against a relentless Bulldog offense and made 10 saves in the game.

For the third consecutive season, the Shore Regional boys’ baseball team reached the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I sectional final. After winning a sectional title last season against New Egypt after losing in the final the year before, the Blue Devils once again played their best baseball when it mattered the most. They reached this season’s sectional final and this year faced Middlesex, but had trouble scoring runs in
the game and came up short losing by the score of 15 to 3. Shore finishes the season with a 17-11 record and they were 6-6 within their division. In getting to the finals, Shore upset some teams along the way and in the quarterfinals, the Blue Devils defeated Bound Brook by the score of 12 to 2. Devin McLaughlin had 2 hits including a three run home run along with 5 RBI's in the game. Matt Mc-

Carthy also had two hits with one of them being a double with 3 RBI's and Justin Halper also had 2 hits and an RBI supplying all the offense Shore would need. McLaughlin got the win on the mound as well as pitching a perfect fourth inning to earn the victory. In the semi-final game against Florence, the Blue Devils needed some late inning heroics to earn the victory. With the score tied at 2 in the seventh inning and with Matt McCarthy on third base, McLaughlin singled him home to score the winning run in their 3 to 2 win. James Kelly was fantastic on the mound pitching a complete game 4-hitter, while striking out 14 batters. After losing a lot of players last season to graduation the Blue Devils got the most out of their young players as a very satisfied head coach in Pat O'Niell wrapped up the season by saying, "It was a great season. For us to go to a third straight sectional final is a fantastic accomplishment. We went on a great run at the end of the season and we expect to be even better next season."

EAGLES CAPTURE CJG lll CHAMPIONSHIP By: Kevin Davis
Middletown South softball (25-4) continued its undefeated May when the Lady Eagles captured the Central Jersey, Group 3 championship with a 3-0 shutout win over Steinert on May 29.
The Lady Eagles scored first inning runs, and junior Maddie McMahon made those runs stand up, following her May 27 no-hitter against Raritan with another gem. McMahon struck out 10 Lady Spartans while stifling the visitors en route to her second straight shutout. Junior Julia Blair, senior Tiffani Lambert and junior Ciara Sullivan each drove in a run for the sectional champs en route to the team's thirteenth consecutive victory.
Shore Conference Tournament championship. McMahon received seven runs of support in her May 27 no-hitter against Raritan, securing a semifinal slot for the streaking Lady Eagles. They were set to finish May by meeting tenthseeded Matawan on Saturday, May 30, in the penultimate round of the SCT. A win would put the final touches on a flawless month for the Lady Eagles, who outscored their opponents 108-19 since the calendar flipped on April.

RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN MAKES HISTORY WINNING STATE GROUP TITLE By Mike Ready
PENNINGTON – Sophomore attackman Charlie Curran scored the game-tying goal with 15 seconds left in regulation then scored the biggest goal in Rumson-Fair Haven lacrosse history when he wrapped a shot around the cage for the game-winning goal with 1:03 left in overtime to give the Bulldogs a 9-8 victory over two-time defending Group I champion Mountain Lakes (16-6) on Wednesday at Hopewell Valley High School. The win handed Rumson-Fair Haven its first NJSIAA Group I title in program history and at the same time put them in the record books as the first Shore Conference team to take home a state group title. It was the Bulldogs second appearance in a group final after suffering a 8-6 loss to Mountain Lakes in the 2013 NJSIAA Group I final. Mountain Lakes, ranked No.11 in the NJ.com Top 20, was seeking its third-straight Group I title and 12th in program history.
with varsity experience – this season, no one expected this type of production out of this over-achieving Bulldog team. And after a 0-4 start, the thought of this team competing for a state title seemed hard to fathom. However, those loses to start the season were against four of the top teams in the state and the young Bulldog team was still trying find its identity against some of the toughest competition the state could muster. They followed up those losses by winning 12 of the next 13 games before stumbling to Southern in the Shore Conference Tournament final. Since that loss they’ve won six straight entering the Tournament of Champions and are a much different team from the start of the season. Mountain Lakes jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter but the Bulldogs were getting their chances and finished with an 11-4 shot advantage in the first quarter, the difference being the play of Mountain Lakes senior Kevin Beimfohr in the cage.
Last Saturday the Bulldogs won their second sectional title in program history in just the third year since the NJSIAA expanded the state tournament into sectional tournaments. As the No.3 seed, the Bulldogs (18-6) beat second-seeded Madison 6-5 in the semifinals and top-seeded New Providence 12-8 in the final. They now advance into the Tournament of Champions as the No.6 seed and will face third-seeded Summit May 30 at BridgewaterRaritan High School at 7:30 p.m.
Goals by senior midfielder Lucas Seckler and junior Matt Watters made it 5-3 with 4:51 remaining in the half and a short-handed goal by junior attackman Griffin Schultz at 3:32 pulled the Bulldogs to within 5-4. Mountain Lakes Duke-bound senior attackman Brad Smith got the lead back to two 22 seconds later before a lightning storm delayed the game for almost two hours with the Lakers in front 6-4.

in half and that’s how it ended with the Lakers up 6-5 at the half. Less than two minutes into the third quarter, sophomore Bryan Hess scored an unassisted goal to even up the game at six apiece before Ryan Frawley and Zander Kotsen snapped the 6-6 tie to put the Lakers up 8-6 at the end of three quarters of play, but those were the last two goals the Lakers would score this season. Schultz then scored an unassisted goal with 5:16 left in regulation to pull Rumson to within 8-7 setting up Curran’s late game and overtime heroics. Rumson outshot the Lakers 38-15 for the game with Bulldog junior goalie Kyle Knapp turning away nine shots on goal. Schultz finished with three goals and an assist, Curran with two and Seckler, Waters, Hess and junior Henry Sillen all contributed a goal apiece. Sillen and Waters each added assists.

CBA Embraces Growing Sport of Rugby By Ted Kaiser
LINCROFT— It was not that long ago that lacrosse was barely a sport at the high school level at the Jersey Shore. The same could once be said of hockey. Now some are hoping that rugby could be the next niche sport to gain popularity in the area. In 2011, CBA and head coach Pat Moroney started the first high school rugby team in the area. They began with two seasons of non-contact rugby, then went fully into contact in 2013. The Colts embraced the challenge and won a state championship over St. Peter’s to finish off an undefeated season and the top ranking in New Jersey. "We could not have gotten here without the support of the school and I could not have gotten here without the support of my assistant coaches, who were exemplary," said Moroney. The current season did not develop into a state championship, but the sport and CBA’s program continues to build up.
The traditional version of the sport, Rugby Union, is played with 15-player sides on a 100-meter pitch. A try, or score, is worth five points after a player grounds the ball across the try line, similar to American football’s end zones. A kicker then attempts to “convert” the try — worth two points — by booting the ball through a pair of uprights. Rugby Union is an 80-minute game, divided into 40-minute halves. Rugby Sevens is similar, following the same rules and scoring system, but with only seven players per side. This distinction is significant, as it changes strategy and increases the pace of the game. Sevens is aptly named, as the seven-player sides play for sevenminute halves. “If you look at soccer and the way [it grew] from being able to see the men and the women perform on the world stage, I think we’ll see the same thing with rugby,” Moroney said. “We can really get a lot of kids playing. If we do that, then we’ll be successful at the men’s level and the women’s level later on.”

CBA (24-5) advanced to the South Jersey, Non-Public A final with a 14-4 semifinal win over ninth-seeded Immaculata on Friday, May 29. The Colts jumped on Spartans at their first opportunity, netting four runs in the bottom of the first, punctuated by a 2-run homer by junior Luca Dalatri, his eighth of the season. Senior starter Mike Garvey battled to ensure that support would be enough, surrendering three runs to the visitors in the fourth inning before escaping further damage. Garvey's teammates rallied in support of their starter in the bottom half of the inning, putting together a two-out rally
cba’s #21 KENNY CAMPBELL Photos By: Fran Attardi the campus of Monmouth University for the state sectional final against Bishop Eustace on June 2. Provided CBA gets past RBC on Monday, a win against the Crusaders would position the Colts to join Wall's 2004 team as the only Shore Conference teams to complete a championship sweep, with an overall group championship the final obstacle. “If we make it to the state championship game, then we can start to think about (a championship sweep),” Kenney said. “But (the team has) done a good job of focusing on each game, rather than making history.” that first saw Andrew Buccellato push two runs across with a clutch single, then cross the plate himself when Will Morgan delivered a 2-run home run to extend CBA's lead to 8-3. Garvey responded with a shutdown fifth inning, and pitched into the sixth before giving way to Joe Gargana, who induced a double play to protect what was then a 9-4 Colts lead. CBA poured it on in the sixth inning, adding five more runs to achieve the 14-4 final.

The Colts' convincing win left the door open for a potential sweep of all possible championships for CBA. They've already won the A North division and Monmouth County championships, and sat just three wins shy of history following their win on May 29. “We won our division, county tournament -- we're in a position where winning all five (championships) is possible,” CBA coach Marty Kenney said. “I try to tell the kids, we need to take it one game at a time.” The Colts will next set their sights on the June 1 Shore Conference Tournament final against eighth-seeded Red Bank Catholic at Lakewood's FirstEnergy Park before heading to

ROBBINVILLE – The Matawan Huskies came from behind twice to tie the score including a clutch two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh by sophomore first baseman Jessica Veary to even the score at 2-2, but the Robbinsville Ravens plated an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th inning to capture the Central Jersey Group II title Friday afternoon in Robbinville.
Veary then tied it with two outs in the top of the seventh with an RBI double scoring junior Samantha Buchman from second but that was all the Huskies could muster. “We played well, you’re down 2-0 and you lost your best player, that’s tough to overcome,” head coach Bob Dubina said. “We just fought, fought, fought. We got two runs late and we were pretty confident we could pull it out, but it didn’t happen.”
For Robbinsville (24-3) - ranked fifth in the NJ.Com Top 20 poll - the win represents their fifth straight NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II championship while Matawan (21-7) – ranked eighth in the Shore Conference – was attempting to win their second sectional title since 2005 and second overall in program history. With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 10th, the secondseeded Ravens scored the winning run under international tiebreaker rules, which places the last batted out of the previous inning at second base to lead off the inning if the game is still tied after nine innings of play. The intent of the rule is to bring extra-inning games to speedier conclusion, but it’s a tough way to lose a game, especially a game of this magnitude.
Huskies senior pitcher Erin Powers (18-6) was the tough-luck loser going 10 innings allowing three runs - only one-earned run – struck out two, walked one and gave up nine hits. Julia DiGiorgio had 3 hits with a double and a home run in the game as Henry Hudson
routed the #11tj seeded Rockets. Keelan once again got the win on the mound giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and striking out 3 batters in the game. She also had 3 hits at the plate with 3 RBI's on offense. Olivia Iannace added 3 hits with one being a home run to go along with herc3 RBI's. One of the few down falls to this year’s season for Henry Hudson was they were upset in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament by the score of 14 to 4 by Raritan. Henry Hudson has moved on from that loss winning 6 games in a row and are now playing in the semi finals of their Group against New Egypt to be held at Gloucester County College.
Yonclas and Warner Spark Holmdel Girls to Claim State Sectional Track Title By J. Marsh
Holmdel sprint and pole vault specialist Keira Yonclas accounted for no less than four gold medals at the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II championship held at North Burlington High School in Columbus. The addition of two golds and a silver by teammate Marin Warner enabled the Hornets to take the team title for a third consecutive year. Holmdel bested rival Matawan by a score of 107 to 78.
Rahway was third (44) and Arthur L. Johnson placed fourth (42). Robbinsville and Spotswood tied for fifth place with 35 points each. Yonclas won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. The junior phenom posted a 12.73 clocking in the 100 meters with North Plainfield’s Ashley Atubi (12.82) and Darielle Cross of Matawan (13.00) giving chase.
Holmdel’s Keira Yonclas won the 100 and 200 meter dashes
In the 200 meter dash the identical three athletes came across the line and in the same order as the 100. Yonclas froze the stop watches at 25.76 and in doing so established a new Holmdel school record. Yonclas would later participate in another record setting in the 4 by 400 relay. With the relay team captain Hannah Lee absent Coach Jonathan Cole realigned the squad by adding sophomore Victoria Szczesna and moving Anna DeSario, another sophomore, to the critical anchor slot. Yonclas led off the relay and handed off to number two leg Sam Moryto two strides behind the Matawan runner. Moryto took the lead in the final 20 yards of her segment but was pushed to the outside on the handoff which enabled the Huskies to regain the lead during a jostled exchange. The newly recruited Szczesna took the baton and stalked the leader along the backstretch, then surged to the front on the final turn, handing off to anchor DeSario with a five yard
edge. DeSario cruised through the final 400 meters and held off Matawan’s anchor to clinch the win. The Holmdel quartet established a school record of 4:01.38. The fourth and final gold for Yonclas came in the pole vault. Holmdel went 1 – 2 here as Hornet Kelly McKay took the silver. Marin Warner annexed the two longest track events of the meet. Warner held off a late bid by Katherine Wasserman of Spotswood to capture the 1600 meter championship. In the 3200 Warner reeled in Rumson’s Rachel Lehnert who had established a 20 meter lead by the halfway point. Warner took command with 800 meters remaining and pulled away from the pack to win by 12 seconds over Delaware Valley’s Hannah Bonasguidi. Warner also added a silver medal to her growing collection in the 800 meter run. Senior Kelly McKay broke the third Holmdel record of the meet with a 15.70 clocking in the 100 meter hurdles, earning her a bronze medal.

Matawan Boys Capture State Sectional Track Championship By J. Marsh
Paced by a pair of gold medals by hurdler Nate Bowie, the Matawan boys track team captured the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II championship. Matawan piled up 129 points, well ahead of their closest competitor Holmdel with 79 points. The meet was a demonstration of shore conference domination in central New Jersey. Following the two leaders were Ewing (61), Rahway (55) and Robbinsville (45).
at 14.20. Using that as a yardstick would indicate Bowie could be Matawan’s best bet to emerge a MOC titleholder.
Bowie’s finest moment came in the 110 hurdles where he led a contingent of Huskies to a 1 – 2 – 3 sweep of the event and clocked in at 14.07. Following Bowie across the line were teammates Kadeem Spenser (15.29) and up and coming sophomore Dave Alston (15.38).
Matawan’s superior depth translated to a pair of golds and a silver in the three relay events. The Huskies won the 4 by 800 relay with a squad comprised of Thomas Williams, Matt Natoli, Harrell Dixon and Bryce Lew. The event was a shore sweep with Holmdel and Raritan placing second and third. That same Matawan quartet also won the 4 by 400 relay with Rahway and Ewing giving chase. The 4 by 400 was the most exciting race of the day. Matawan anchor Matt Natoli took the baton three steps behind Rahway’s Lenworth Wilson, passed Wilson on the final turn and drew away with a burst of speed in the stretch for the win.
Bowie picked up his second gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles. The Matawan senior was timed at 56.19 with Ewing’s Devin Oyola (57.73) and Chris Caputi (57.79) of Raritan finishing second and third.
SAINT JOHNVIA HIGH SCHO
Looking forward to the Meet of Champions (MOC) Bowie has to be considered a top contender. The reigning Monmouth County and Shore Conference champion turned in a blistering 13.97 clocking at both venues. Last year the now graduated Obafemi Animashaun of Union Catholic won the MOC 110 hurdles timed

O SAINT JOHNVIAN Track wins were balanced with golds in the field by Matawan. Matthew Isaacson repeated as state sectional champion in the pole vault. Isaacson’s mark of 14-06.00 was a full two feet over silver medalist Nick DeLuca of Governor Livingston who reached a height of 12-06.00.
