Students Shine at The Jersey Awards By Ted Kaiser
SEA GIRT— It was another memorable night at the 13th Annual “Jersey Awards” held at The Parker House on Tuesday, June 25th. This year’s outstanding group of award winners was honored in front of a packed crowd of proud parents, relatives, coaches, and friends. The honorees were among the most talented athletes at the Jersey Shore both on and off the field. The quality of students nominated and ultimately selected to win were some of the most accomplished in the history of the awards. With tremendous academic achievements, tireless extracurricular and volunteer activities, and the character befitting true athletic scholars, the class of 2013 truly shined. “Every year is a great group of talented students, but this year’s group has really stood out,” says publisher Fran Attardi. “When you hear their accomplishments, it makes all the work for JSN during the year worth it. It was a truly special night and a pleasure to honor these young adults.” For the 13th Annual Jersey Award, each recipient received a Tiffany & Co. trophy engraved with their name, sport, school and sponsor. The winners were chosen on the basis of their athletic achievements, academics, and extracurricular activities. Jersey Sporting News takes great pride in select-
ing well-rounded students who excel across the board. Over the years, the “Jersey Awards” has become one of the most coveted awards in local high school sports. For it is a one of a kind award where hundreds of nominations come in for each individual sport and only one is awarded the honor of being player of the year for their respected sport. JSN is the ONLY publication to have an official ceremony that honors all the athletes in the shore conference. As always, The Jersey Awards would not be possible without the exceptional support of the sponsors. The Parker House once again hosted a beautiful summer evening with recipients, family, and friends enjoying a cocktail hour before the ceremony. The U.S. Army was on hand with t-shirts and gifts for the recipients as well as some words of wisdom from Captain Steve Austin. The USMC was also on site and generously donated swag for each of the award recipient’s bags. Jersey Sporting News would like to especially thank the top sponsors for the awards including The Parker House , U.S. ARMY and Joe Leone’s Italian Specialty Store and Catering in Point Pleasant. Please take the time to support these businesses that have so generously supported our local student athletes. It is because of them that JSN is able to carry on the tradition of The Jersey Awards.

13th Annual High School All-Star Game: Monmouth vs. Ocean www.jdsftsf.com
By Eric Braun LONG BRANCH- Coming off a frustrating 5-5 season in 2011, the Green Wave from Long Branch High School have gotten back to their tradition of ground and pound. The Wave has rushed out to a 2-0 record with wins over Manasquan and Monmouth, relying mostly on the legs of Josil Jackson and the arm of Avery Griffin. Long Branch took a hit during their final pre-season game when senior tailback Dwight Clark went down with a broken left ankle. Clark is expected back by midseason but Coach Dan George needs to keep his team focused and moving forward to get back to Class B North dominance and be eligible for the NJSIAA tournament. Coach George also lost senior tight- end and linebacker Dominic Mincieli when he suffered a knee injury in the spring, but Mincieli should be back in the first couple weeks of the
season. Minus the injuries, the Green Wave is in prime posi7/3/13 - 7/30/13 • Jersey Sporting News tion to challenge Neptune, Wall and Ocean in the Shore Conference B North division. Top to bottom this is the toughest division in the Shore Conference. Coach George will look to get additional contributions from junior Shabazz Shuler and seniors Curtis Gunther and Trey Smith at wide outs. On defense, the Wave will look for Chris Pappayluo and senior safeties Corey Morris and Brett Roach to shutdown opposing offenses.

Eagles Roll Past The Rebels By Brian Daneman The Howell Rebels might have known they were in for a rough night at the swamp when they were called for a delay of game penalty before the game even started. The penalty was rightfully called because the Rebels did not enter the field until well after 7pm leaving the home team to wait on the sidelines. The game was riddled with penalties on both sides of the ball. Nineteen penalties were called to be exact and five were on just the first series. But otherwise, it was a well-played game. Howell’s passing efforts actually looked quite sharp on their first two possessions with six completions and four first downs. On their third possession, the relentless Eagle defensive line sacked Rebel quarterback Connor McGlynn at the Rebels own three- yard line. In doing so, they knocked him out of the game and into an awaiting ambulance with a possible neck or shoulder injury. From this point late in the first quarter Middletown South began to soar behind the power running of Jake Ripnick scoring on three subsequent drives. Ripnick ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. The Eagles took advantage of the loss of the Howell quarterback and pressured his substitute Aaron Trimble for the rest of the night leading to five sacks and two interceptions; one by junior Andrew Wisialko for six yards and one later in the second half by speedster Elijah Smith for a 60- yard touchdown return. The South defense was tenacious all night and gave the offense great field position on every series. The offense led by Ripnick and quarterback Kyle
