Vangelas Leads Monmouth to Victory Over Ocean By Eric Braun
Toms River, NJ - On a night where the All-Shore graduating seniors put on the pads at the high school level for one last time, no one person went out with a bang more than Colts Neck Senior wideout Tim Vangelas. Vangelas scored the game’s opening and final touchdowns to help lead Monmouth County to a 19-7 victory over Ocean
County in the 36th edition of the U.S. Army All-Shore Gridiron Classic. Vangelas finished his Colts Neck football career in grand fashion at the Gridiron Classic with six receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns. What made the night extra special for Vangelas was catching both passes from
his fellow Colts Neck teammate Mike Campbell. Afterwards Vangelas said, “It is a great honor to be in the game and to go out on top with one final victory, win the MVP and catch passes from Campbell and Neptune’s Ajee Patterson, there is no better feeling.” Along with Vangelas winning the Offensive MVP honors, David Calederon of Neptune collected to Monmouth County’s Defensive MVP honors. On the night Calderon capped off a fantastic high school career with four sacks. Ocean County was well represented this year even with a hard loss. Offensive MVP from Brick Memorial
Ryan Cieplenski threw for 44 yards and the team’s only touchdown of the night by hitting Point Beach’s Andre Cochran for a 29-yard strike. Ocean County was lead on defensive by MVP recipient Dan Watson from Brick Township, who recorded a pair of sacks and continuous quarterback pressure all night. The Sam Mills Award Recipients this year were Neptune quarterback Ajee Patterson from Monmouth County and Tom Farrell from Monsignor Donovan. The Sam Mills Award is given out annually to the Monmouth and Ocean County players who show the

Seaview Closes Regular Season with Win

WALL TOWNSHIP— Seaview Jeep hopes to get back to the Jersey Shore Basketball League finals for the first time in a few seasons. With an 8-2 record at the end of the regular season, Seaview looks to be in prime position for a run at the title. They might have the most balanced roster in the league with versatile big men, high scoring guards, and knock down shooters. They are one of the top four contenders along with T&T Coast, Larson Ford, and Sterns Trailer.
Guard Desmond Wade has been explosive for Seaview. Wade, who was one of the top scorers in the state during a prolific high school career at Linden, scored 32 points in his second ever JSBL game earlier this summer. He scored 27 last week in Seaview’s regular season finale, a 132-102 win over the N.J. Tarheels. Malick Kone has been a bright spot at the swingman position. After planning to leave Rutgers following coach Mike Rice’s firing, Kone decided to stay and is putting up solid numbers in the JSBL. Forwards Matt McMullen and Michael Balkovic have also been key to Seaview’s success. McMullen, a former CBA standout, put up 37 points versus the Tarheels and Balkovic scored 22. Balkovic played his high school ball at St. John Vianney and currently plays at Caldwell. McMullen is playing in college at Colgate. McMullen is 6’6, Balkovic is 6’7, and then Seaview really adds the size with 6’10 Andrew Feeley. Feeley is a mainstay in the roster and his return late in the season has kept Seaview going strong while Kone has missed a few games. The center had 18 points and 16 rebounds in his last game.

Monmouth County Wins Shootout at Dowd All Star Game By Eric Braun
By Ted Kaiser
Red Bank, NJ- Monmouth County took the 16th annual Jim Dowd All Shore All-Star Game 9-6 in front of a packed house at the Red Bank Armory Sunday night. The event not only showcased the top Shore Conference talent from across Monmouth and Ocean County, but also brought awareness to the local food banks. Jim Dowd a Brick Township graduate and NHL veteran, has done an amazing job raising awareness through the annual contest and all proceeds going to various foundations. For the second year in a row, the proceeds will benefit the food banks of Monmouth and Ocean County. According to Dowd, “the food banks are currently serving 84% more then they had four years ago, with two out of every five people affected are children.” Dowd, a 17 year NHL veteran and member of three New Jersey Devils Stanley Cup teams was also a standout at Brick Township, breaking the national scholastic scoring record and finished his high school career with 189 goals and 186 assists. The back and forth battle all night had the two squads deadlocked at 5-5 after two periods of play. Ocean County lead by Brick forward Andrew Reiss who tallied 2 goals and Monmouth County was lead by CBA forward Brendan vanRiemsdyk, also with 2 goals. Third period opened with a fury of goals in the first ten minutes of action with the
T&T Coast Loaded for JSBL Title Run
Monmouth County squad getting goals by Wall defenseman Tom Panico three minutes in, and two minutes later, Jeff Morgan, forward from Wall, scored on a breakaway to put Monmouth up 7-5. The fast pace action did not let up for either team as Ocean pulled to within 1 eight minutes in with a goal by Joey Campisano from Toms River North. CBA forward vanRiemsdyl quickly answered and put Monmouth back up by 8-6 thirty seconds later and teammate Matt Langlois from CBA scored his second goal of the game twenty seconds after that. The contest ended with Monmouth County winning 9-7 and taking a commanding 11-5 record over the Ocean County All Stars. Monmouth County MVP’s were Brendan vanRiesmdyk from CBA with three goals and defenseman Tom Panico from Wall with one goal, while Andrew Reiss from Brick Township took home Ocean County MVP honors with two goals and Toms River North’s forward Joey Campisano with one goal and one assist.
WALL TOWNSHIP— Flash back to 2010. T&T Coast utilized a roster loaded with talent to win the Jersey Mike’s Jersey Shore Basketball League championship. The ingredients are there again this summer. Mainstays Jason Westrol, Randall Stallworth, and Chris Hendershot are rejoined by former FDU star Chad Timberlake to essentially reunite the core of the title team. T&T Coast looks to be geared up for the postseason with a pair of impressive victories last week. On Tuesday, T&T (9-1) took down rival Sterns Trailer 124-118 at the Wall High School gymnasium in a rematch of last year’s final won by Sterns. It was a good test because Sterns Trailer had been playing possibly the best basketball of basically any team in the league so far this summer despite
only a 6-3 record. Randall Stallworth fired in eight three-pointers to finish with a game-high 33 points. Guard Jason Westrol tallied 29 points and dished out 11 assists to captain the offense. Chad Timberlake added 24 and Chris Hendershot chipped in 13 points and 15 boards. Guard Neil Thompson played his usual lock down defense at the guard spot. Stallworth’s outburst from three-point range was only a warmup for things to come on Thursday. The guard drained a dozen shots from behind the arc to finish with 36 points as T&T Coast breezed past Investors Bank 112-92. If Stallworth continues the hot shooting and the core of the team keeps turning out, then T&T could have a postseason run reminiscent of 2010.

Vangelas Leads Monmouth to Victory Over Ocean continued from page 2 dedication, perseverance, character,
leadership and inspiration that was personified by the late Long Branch legend and former NFL New Orleans Saints All-Pro linebacker. Patterson, who will be attending the University of New Haven in the fall, said afterwards, “It’s an honor to play in the Gridiron Classic, but it is an even bigger honor and blessing to receive this award.” Farrell, who will be attending Stonehill College in the fall, showed one of the reasons why he won the award on the final drive
of the game. With under two minutes to go, Ocean County assistant coach Lou Peccarelli went to Farrell to put him back in the game, with no hesitation Farrell commented, “Coach, leave Chris Cruz (Jackson Liberty) out there since this is his final game as well and will be leaving to join the U.S. Marines in the fall.“ “That sums up what the true meaning of the Sam Mills award,” Farrell later stated, “I felt Sam Mills would have done the same thing.”

scandal and eventual firing of head coach Mike Rice. But after the hiring of new head coach Eddie Jordan, Seagears changed his mind and decided to remain in Piscataway. The guard averaged 6.5 points per game as a freshman last season. Moore transfers to Rutgers from Pittsburgh and is a 6’6 215 lb. senior forward. He averaged eight points and three rebounds in 33 games with the Panthers. Moore is awaiting word from the NCAA to see if he can play right away through a hardship waiver.
By Ted Kaiser
WALL TOWNSHIP— There is undoubtedly a distinct Rutgers University flavor to Investors Bank in the Jersey Mike’s Jersey Shore Basketball League. The duo for Jerome Seagears and incoming Rutgers transfer JJ Moore are often times the catalysts on offense for the team. Last Tuesday, both Scarlet Knights showed why they are Division I talents. Moore poured in a game-high 39 points while knocking down six three-point attempts and Seagears went off for 30 points in a tight 103-97 loss to GSS Industries. Seagears decided to leave Rutgers in April during the height of the
“We are very excited to welcome J.J. into our program,” said Rutgers head coach Eddie Jordan. “He’s an exceptional athlete, who brings experience, an aggressive approach and versatility to the floor. J.J. is also a good teammate and the type of player who will help move our program forward.” Investors Bank also fell to red-hot T&T Coast on Thursday by a score of 122-92 to fall to 2-7. They will have their work cut out for them in the playoffs, but if Seagears and Moore thrive offensively, they could be capable of making some noise. Investors Bank won the 2011 JSBL title led in part by former Villanova guard, Mike Nardi.

Daye, Mabrey Pace Team Shore By Ted Kaiser
WALL TOWNSHIP— Basketball is increasingly a guard’s game over the last two decades with big men taking a backseat to explosive backcourts. Team Shore would certainly like to have a bigger frontcourt, but their guards are so good that sometimes their lack of size does not seem to matter. The squad finished the regular season only 3-7 in the Jersey Mike’s Jersey Shore Basketball League; however, they have played every opponent tough. With a backcourt of Roy Mabrey and Gage Daye,
any game is within reach of victory. On opening night of the season, Gage Daye exploded for 47 points in a win over the N.J. Tarheels. The performance served notice to fans who had not heard of Daye before that night. The 6’0 guard has not been unnoticed during his career though. He was a Division II All-American out of Bloomfield College where he was the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Page 7
His game combines nicely with that of follow guard Roy Mabrey. Mabrey was a standout at CBA who has really picked up his game at St. Anselm College. He was named a Division II honorable mention All-American as a sophomore this past season averaging 17.4 points per game. In the JSBL, he routinely scores 30 points or more like he did last Wednesday in a 104-103 loss to Larson Ford. Mabrey had a game-high 33 points including seven three-pointers and dished out seven assists. Team Shore might not be as deep as some teams in the JSBL this summer, but with Mabrey and Daye in the backcourt don’t discount them from having a chance at pulling a playoff upset.

Verrazano Is “Je By Eric Braun
Oceanport, NJ – Verrazano, who is coowned by Kevin Scatuorchio (Red Bank) and Bryan Sullivan (Rumson), put on a magnificent show for the 36,284 William Hill Haskell Invitational on Sunday July 28th, beating Power Broker by 9 ¾ lengths, the largest margin of victory on the Haskell. The crowd was somewhat subdued for most of the day due to overcast skies and a sprinkle of rain throughout the early card, but as the Haskell neared its running, the buzz throughout the grandstands started to increase. On one hand you had the local favorite in Verrazano, trained by Todd Pletcher and jockey in Johnny Velazquez, getting most of the play going off at even money. Then you had leading jockey favorite all day, in High Bridge native Rosie Napravnik, aboard Power Broker who was looking to give trainer Bob Baffert another Haskell win. Then finally you had Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens aboard Preakness Stakes winner in Oxbow.

Power Broker moved at us a little, and my horse just took off,” said a jubilant Velazquez after the race. “He made a huge statement today,” Pletcher said. “This was one of the most impressive – if not the most impressive – races by any 3-year-old this year. Fordmen in Hunt for JSBL Crown By Ted Kaiser
WALL TOWNSHIP— Larson Ford might not have the biggest names in the Jersey Mike’s Jersey Shore Basketball League, but they know how to win games. The formula has worked for years. The Fordmen typically consist of underrated players from Division III schools and veterans who just know how to play winning basketball. This year could be another big finish for Larson Ford who currently sits at a record of 9-1. The roster has a large presence from New Jersey City University, as is usually the case. Guard Kareem Collins and swingman Dana John are two veterans who have plenty of JSBL experience. Former Kean University standout Jonathan Jones and Ramapo’s Ahmad Mosby are two other Larson mainstays. The Fordman have also received some help from former Villanova guard Dominic Cheek and St. Peter’s Ryan Bacon. Last week it was Rashawn Wilson who turned in a team-high 23 points to lift Larson Ford by Team Shore 104-103. A free throw by Wilson gave the Fordmen the lead and Mosby (15 points) added a layup to seal the deal. Jones had 21 points, but his five steals helped key the defensive effort against Team Shore’s strong backcourt led by Roy Mabrey (33 points). Larson Ford’s regular season is finished. They could be the top seed depending on the outcomes on Monday’s final night of the regular season. The playoffs begin Tuesday and the championship game is Monday, August 12th at 7:30pm.

Douby Stars for Sterns By Ted Kaiser WALL TOWNSHIP— After a few seasons playing basketball in China, former Rutgers star Quincy Douby is back in the USA and looking for another shot in the NBA. The talented guard is preparing for workouts where he hopes to get a nod for a spot in an NBA training camp this fall. A lot has changed for Douby over the past few years. He’s gained a huge following in China as the best player on a team, which won a Chinese Basketball Association championship. Douby hopes the experience and maturity he gained during his time away will translate into a spot on an NBA roster.
©2012. Paid for by the United States Army. All rights reserved.
Although he may have made his last appearance for the summer, Douby was an early season regular for defending champion Sterns Trailer as the Jersey Mike’s Jersey Shore Basketball League at Wall Township High School. A 30-point night was a common theme for the guard during his few games back in the JSBL for the first time in years. Meanwhile Sterns Trailer used the spark from Douby to lift an already talented roster to a 6-3 record.

Sterns dropped a close game to T&T Coast last week without him, but got back on the winning track on Thursday by defeating GSS Industries 111-105 in overtime. This time it was another former Rutgers player leading the way. Swingman Dane Miller came to life with the game-tying tip-in at the end regulation and then scored eight points in OT to finish with 20 for the game. Former Monmouth Hawk power forward Blake Hamilton had another steady game as usual. “The Hammer”, as he was affectionally known in college, is the inspirational leader of Sterns Trailer. If the squad can get potent scorer Manny Ubilla back for the playoffs, they are positioned for a return trip to the finals

in the Gridiron Classic 7-v-7 Championship game. Barnegat High School, led by Junior Quarterback/Defensive Back Cinjun James, outlasted Freehold 227. James was able to spread the offense and pick apart the Freehold defense at will, and none more impressive than a late 2 minute drill that saw Barnegat stretch their lead to the final score of 22-7. Barnegat High School will look to build on their summer success next season when they look to bolster their program’s 2012 campaign that finished with a record of 5-5 overall and B South record of 5-2.

New UFC Gym Opens By Michael Rogers
Last week a new UFC gym opened up in the Shrewsbury Plaza in Shrewsbury. Owners Bob and Suzanna Stein had a grand opening last week for their sports performance facility. The facility can handle a variety of age groups as well as customize each persons' workout to their own personal needs. This is what makes the UFC gym different from other facilities. Bob and Suzanna Stein are assisted by seven trainers who are all trained fighters and are also trained in mixed martial arts and boxing. Depending on a members personal goals the trainers can also work on wrestling, kick boxing, and BJJ. Even though
most programs are for conditioning and training purposes, they can be adjusted to prepare someone for competition. The facilities are amazing with a full size boxing ring, weights, pro style heavy kick bags and mats for training. The UFC gym has everything someone needs to train and learn correctly the advantages of this type of training.

Chubb Returns to JSBL in Style
Chubb has spent most of his career playing overseas in Germany’s top league where he averaged 10.8 points and 6.8 rebounds last season. After he graduated from Penn, he came very close to making the New Jersey Nets in 2005 during training camp and was one of the final cuts before rosters were finalized. The JSBL has been home to some fine performances by the center. Chubb’s starred on the LB Financial teams in which he and fellow Penn alums Jeff Schiffner, Don Moxley, and Tim Begley were among a core that won championships and was among the best teams during the first decade of the 2000’s.
By Ted Kaiser
WALL TOWNSHIP— A familiar face to long-time Jersey Shore Basketball League fans returned after several seasons away. Center Adam Chubb, a former University of Pennsylvania standout, made a grand return to the JSBL for the first time since 2007 when his LB Financial squad was enjoying a stretch of years with a championship and finals appearances. The 6’10 big man seemed to round right into form with his typical double-double. He scored 21 points and hauled down 15 boards to pace GSS Industries to a 103-97 win over Investors Bank last Tuesday evening.

Skin Protection Suggestions To decrease your risk, try these tips the next time you are in the sun: • Limit your exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. • Regularly use a water-resistant, broadspectrum SPF sunscreen with a value of 15 or higher. Apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every hour as needed, particularly after swimming or perspiring. • Use sunscreen even on cold or cloudy days. Remember, UV rays can reflect off water, cement, sand and snow. • Your lips need protection, too-use an SPF 15 or higher lip balm.
Sept 15 - December
• Best the pests with an effective insect repellent that offers sun protection.
Fortunately, all that can be easy with the help of new products and beloved favorites: • Look for a new line of serious sun care inspired by the lifestyle of singer Jimmy Buffett and his sun-seeking fans called Parrot Heads. Margaritaville Parrot Head Advanced Sun Care contains Aloe Hydrating Complex with the highest-quality, highly concentrated aloe vera plant solids. Aloe aids in hydration and helps fight the effects of UV exposure. • Moms love Ocean Potion, a dry-feel formula fortified with Vitamin D3 that delivers nourishing benefits to the skin. • NO-AD, which stands for “not advertised,” has been a commonsense choice since 1962. It provides twice the amount of the best possible sun protection for the same price as other national brands and was selected by a major consumer review magazine as a “best buy” four years in a row. • And to beat the burn and the bite, Bull Frog, originally invented for surfers, offers sun protection and DEET-free insect repellent in a trusted, durable, water-resistant formula perfect for sports and outdoor activities.

(NAPSI)—It’s a bright idea to save your skin from the damage that can come from too much sun. Unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can put you at risk for skin cancer, which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is the most common form of cancer in the United States.

It remains to be seen if Chubb can be the missing piece to lift GSS Industries to elite status in the JSBL this summer. The victory over Investors Bank was a good sign and Chubb combined nicely with NJIT’s Winfield Willis who scored a team-high 26 points. Antoine Obery added 11 points for GSS who is now 2-7 on the season.

WALL TOWNSHIP— The Jersey Mike’s Jersey Shore Basketball League has a new venue at the Jersey Shore this summer at Wall Township High School. Longtime home St. Rose is undergoing renovations and it is possible the league will return their next year. One thing that hasn’t changed is the fact that the JSBL is very much a men’s league. Most of the players are post-college with some still in school and training for next season. Every now and then a few high school players and recent graduates will see playing time on a roster, but rarely does

a full team of young players get together. The N.J. Tarheels are a team full of these young talents and their 0-10 record is reflecting it. But the N.J. Tarheels have shown some promise and reason to watch the games. Look no further than Brookdale Community College’s Cory Soanes. He is fresh off a season where Brookdale won the national championship in their level of competition. Soanes sank the game winning three-pointer to lift the Jersey Blues to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division
III Finals. He averaged only 5.7 points per game last season, but in the JSBL he pumped in 20 points last week versus Seaview Jeep. Matt Devine has been another key player for the Tarheels. He scored 21 points against Seaview Jeep. Devine attends SUNY-New Paltz. The JSBL playoffs begin on Tuesday, August 6th with double headers through Thursday evening. The first game starts at 7:15pm and the second begins at 8:45pm. The championship game is Monday, August 12th at 7:30pm.
