VETERAN TOMS RIVER NORTH SQUAD HAS SOME UNFINISHED BUSINESS TO SETTLE By Mike Ready

TOMS RIVER – The Mariners are coming off an upand-down season which saw them win both the Ocean County Tournament and Shore Conference Tournament, but sandwiched in between was a loss in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV Tournament to Lenape, who went on to the final before falling to Southern.

“Hopefully we all stay healthy and will be able to produce for us, said Bellissimo of the TRN staff. In the field, Bellissimo – a Rutgers University commit – is back at first base this season after posting a .410 batting average and driving in 28 runs with five doubles and a triple. Mullins, a Penn State commit who hit .294 last season, will man first base when Bellissimo is on the mound and see some at bats as the DH as well.

They had big late-season wins over divisional opponents Toms River South, who won the Class A South, and Southern, who captured the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV title, and appeared primed for a state tournament run before its best pitcher, righty Craig Larsen, inexplicably threw his only clunker of the season in their loss to Lenape.

Larsen returns at shortstop where he shined in the field and hit for average (.396) and drove in 24 runs while drilling 14 doubles and a triple in 99 plate appearances. Junior Justin Schaff is back behind the plate this year after a solid sophomore season handling the pitching staff and the bat, hitting at a .310 clip and driving in 14 runs with a double and a triple.

“It really didn’t affect us that much, said senior Jared Bellissimo of their loss to Lenape. “After we lost in the states we were completely focused on just going after the Shore Conference title because that’s all we had left so it was just survive and advance.

The speedy Alex Klalo will patrol centerfield again this season following a fine junior campaign which saw him hit .341, score 20 runs and drive in seven with three stolen bases while senior Nick Sibilia gets the full-time job in right field after hitting .286 a year ago as a spot starter.

The Mariners did win 20 games but finished four games back of Toms River South in the rugged A South division. They tied Brick Township for second place, a game ahead of Southern Regional and the good news entering the 2018 season is that their entire starting pitching staff returns intact and seven starting position players are back from a year ago. “We have a lot of seniors back so our team chemistry is looking pretty good, Bellissimo said of the team’s outlook. “Both our pitching staff and lineup looks pretty decent. South won it (Class A South) last year so we’re going to try and take them down this year. Our goal this year is to win everything. We don’t want to lose any games but we know it will happen along the road, so we just want to win every tournament possible. Larsen redeemed himself in a big way by throwing a complete-game gem in the Mariners 5-0 win over Red Bank Catholic in the SCT final. He tossed a three-hit shutout against the heavy-hitting Caseys, striking out six and walking none on a compact 88 pitches. That win pushed Larsen’s record to 6-2 on the year with a 2.32 ERA which could’ve been under 2.00 if

not for his hiccup against Lenape that inflated his ERA. He posted a sterling 0.97 WHIP while striking out 40 batters and walking 11 in 48.1 innings of work. Larsen’s back to head up a pitching rotation that just may be the envy of the Shore Conference entering the 2018 season. Joining Larsen in the starting rotation will be fellow seniors Brendan Mullins, Mike Centeno and Bellissimo and junior Jonathan Giordano. Bellissimo and Larsen are both number one’s, so it will be up to head coach Andrew Pagano to decide who will get the opening-day nod. The hard-throwing Bellissimo went 6-1 a year ago, including tossing a four-hit shutout against Wall in the SCT semifinal – his final start of the

season. He posted a 1.78 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 47.1 innings pitched while striking out 42 and walking 15. After going 4-1 with a 3.65 ERA and 1.44 WHIP a year ago, Mullins is penciled in as the number three starter. In 30.2 innings pitched he struck out 36 batters and issued 13 bases on balls while allowing 31 hits. As a sophomore last season Giordano flashed some big-time potential going 2-0 in 23.2 innings pitched. His 1.78 ERA and 1.14 WHIP and 24 K’s illustrates just how good he can be and he’ll have a shot at proving it this season as the fourth starter. Centeno will add depth to the starting rotation as well as in relief. Newcomers Robert Jeans, Sal Beraco and Chris Woods will come out of the pen filling out the staff.

Junior Dylan Feigin bats second and plays second base after taking over the starting job late in the season a year ago, and rising sophomore Nick DeRose looks to have won the starting third base job while junior infielders Sam Angelo and Mike Collela will contribute off the bench. Giordano, senior Donovan Varga and junior Sean Aguiar are candidates for the starting left field job. “Last year’s rankings mean nothing; we have to go out and prove ourselves this year, Larsen said. “That loss (in the states) is in the back of our minds, but once we step on the field we’re going to forget about it and play like we always did. We got to forget about it between the lines but outside the lines it’s there, it’s motivating us, no doubt. “We just need to come together as a team, Larsen added. “The talent’s there, we just need to combine all of our talents into one team and focus on our chemistry.

Donovan Catholic is led by Debbie Schwartz, who joined the program in 2014. She means so much to her players, and they credit all their success – individual and as a team – to her. “She means everything to me,” Nelson said. “She has turned me into the player that I am today. She has completely changed my

Schwartz is entering her fifth year at Donovan Catholic, but has been coaching high school softball for 30 years. Her resume speaks for itself. “I think the titles that she has won says it all,” Pegano said. “With everything she has done for softball in New Jersey, I think it’s a dream for a player to play for Coach Schwartz. She always puts 100 percent into every single practice and she has her game plans. Coaches are a big part of our success, too, and we devote all of that to Coach Schwartz.” And Donovan Catholic looks to add more titles to Schwartz’s mantle this season. Nelson knows they will be ready for the big game when the time comes. “We know what it’s like to win on the big stage and we know what it’s like to lose on the big stage. I think we are good at knowing how to handle those emotions on the big stage and we’ve really worked to develop the things that weren’t completely developed when we were there before,” Nelson said. “It gives us an advantage because when we get back there, some girls on other teams may not have been there and we have a good core of girls on our team that have been there.”

Donovan has won the Shore Conference B South division each of the last three seasons, and ran away with it last year with its 27-2 record. Not having seniors did not really seem to matter, especially toward the end of the season, when the Griffins were firing on all cylinders.

“The kind of player a coach loves to coach is a kid that is going to outwork everybody, and that’s the best way I can describe that kid,” Schwartz said when asked about Nelson. “She just works and works and works. It started when I met her as an eighth grader when she decided to come here. She came in as an outfielder and we realized she had so much potential as a lefthanded pitcher. We wanted her to work on that and she found success immediately as a freshman. Now, she’s in her junior year and she keeps growing. She works a lot in the off-season on her body, her fitness and her pitching and you are getting the most out of that kid.”

“Our youth also helps us because now we are all getting older and we got those experiences as young players,” said junior pitcher Lindsay Nelson, who owns a career 33-7 record with 336 strikeouts on the mound, a .455 career hitter at the plate, and is committed to play at Drexel University. “We were able to take those experiences and really develop into our later years now.”

The respect was mutual.

CBA BASEBALL GETS AHEAD OF THE COMBINATION OF VET FIELD IN FLORIDA SPRING TRIP AND RISING NEWCOM BANK CATHOLIC A TEA By John Sorce

LINCROFT – The Christian Brothers Academy baseball team is coming off a season in which it finished second in Shore Conference A North with a 18-10 overall record behind Freehold Boro and winning a Non-Public divisional title.

The Colts graduated only two seniors last year and are returning 14 to this year’s squad. “Our junior class and sophomore class pretty much took over last year,” said senior pitcher/outfielder Nick Hohenstein, who was named first team All-Shore and named A North Hitter of the Year last season by both nj.com and the Asbury Park Press and is committed to play baseball at LaSalle University. “We had a couple sophomores step up and a lot of guys made an impact right away.” “He’s been a three-year varsity starter,” said CBA head coach Marty Kenney of

Hohenstein. “He hits well and gives us a lot of depth off the mound. He’s a hard throwing right hander with a good breaking ball. He’s definitely an impact player both on the mound and at the plate. He was All-Shore as a sophomore and last year as a junior, so we kind of know what to expect from him.” The Colts will open their season with a week trip to Florida, where they will play high schools from across the country. “It’s going to be great to get down there to the warm weather and get a bunch of games and practices in,” said junior shortstop Tommy DiTullio, who was a second team All-Shore selection and is committed to Bryant University. “Hopefully, we’ll see some good competition and get ready for our games up here against what will be a really tough division this year.”

Also in the A North is Freehold Township, Manalapan, Colts Neck, Marlboro, Neptune, and Howell in addition to reigning division champion Freehold Boro.

By Mike Ready

The team goes down to Florida in most years, depending on when the school’s spring break is. Getting out of the northeast and into the warmer climate will help prepare CBA for the grinding schedule ahead, especially for A North.

RED BANK - The Caseys will ask five returning senior starters this season to guide a group of up-and-coming underclassmen into the 2018 season, including four rising freshman and two juniors, who have head coach Tony Flego excited about their upside.

“The weather is going to be changing here soon, so this is going to prepare us,” Hohenstein said. “We will be used to it fairly quickly once we come back.”

“We’re going to have a couple of juniors and some freshman that are going to step up and fill some key spots for us,” said Flego. “Our seniors are going to have to push them along and help them out which they’ve been doing a great job with so far. But they’re really good players that come from some great programs so they’re well-schooled already and we expect them to step in and do a great job for us.”

Added DiTullio, “We are going to have an advantage over a lot of teams because a lot of teams here will not be able to get outside and we will be down in the nice weather and getting a head start on game situations and just being able to play outside.” Hohenstein believes the team is off to a good start in practice, and believes it will be a team effort for CBA to get where they want to be at the end of the season. “We really just have to look for everyone on the team to contribute,” Hohenstein said. “Coming into this year we are a lot stronger with our 14 seniors. We are swinging the bat very well right now and our pitchers are throwing a lot of strikes.” Kenney is entering his 45th year with CBA. He has seen a lot of talented players come through the program, and his current players know what it means to represent CBA baseball. “I think our guys understand our tradition and I think it all begins with a strong work ethic and a sense of maturity,” Kenney said. “They understand the success that we’ve had in the past and I think they are looking to add to that history.”

Those seniors Flego was referring to make up the core of this year’s team and bring enough proven talent with them that when you combine it with the raw potential of the newcomers, this is a team you will want to keep an eye on once May and June come around.

Copola is no slouch either, going 8-4 last season in 61.2 innings pitched while allowing just 26 earned runs and striking out 56 on the season. “They form a great one-two punch,” said Flego of his two hurlers. “I don’t know how many teams in the Shore have that so I think we’re pretty blessed with the two of them coming back. They’ll help giving each other a spell here and there and I love throwing them both in a game to give teams two different looks.”

Red Bank Catholic has the luxury of bringing back two proven big-time pitchers, a perk very few Shore Conference teams enjoy, in junior Alexandra DiBeneditto and senior Colby Coppola, who combined to win 18 games for the Caseys last season. DiBeneditto went 10-4 with 97 K’s in 100.1 innings pitched a year ago, including going the distance in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Camden Catholic in the South, Non-Public A quarterfinals when she allowed just one run on three hits in the loss. She also tossed a gem in the Caseys’ 2-1 comeback win against Pinelands when she out-dueled stud pitcher Jessica Rising in the Shore Conference quarterfinals going seven innings and tossing a five-hitter while allowing just one unearned run.

When not in the circle pitching, DiBeneditto will be the DP and see a little action at first base after hitting .306 with three doubles, a triple, home run and 13 RBI. Coppola will be used primarily at third base if she’s in the field after being used sparingly there a year ago. First-team All-Shore pick and Syracuse commit Taylor Lane will lead off and play shortstop after a stellar 2017 campaign which also saw her selected to the NJ.com All-Non-Public second team as

TERAN STAR POWER MERS MAKES RED AM TO RECKON WITH going to Seton Hall because she’s a bad player, that’s for sure. She’s got great power and she’s going to be our 3-4 hitter this year.” The Caseys fifth senior, Allison Tomaino, is another All-Class B North selection for the Caseys at second base and has committed to Bryant University to continue her academic and athletic career. She’s a flawless fielder that stroked the ball at a fantastic .471 pace a year ago along with scoring 26 runs and belting 41 hits. “Great kid, great speed and she slaps the ball to all fields,” said Flego. “She’s got some power and is a great team player.”

well as All-Shore. As the premier leadoff hitter in the Shore, she hit for an eye-popping .519 average with 31 runs scored and 19 stolen bases along with six doubles and 17 runs batted in.

After seeing spot duty a year ago, junior Isabella Goehring gets the starting nod in left field for the Caseys. In the Caseys loss to eventual winner Saint John Vianney in the Shore Conference quarterfinal, Goehring went 1-for-3 on the big stage.

“Taylor’s probably the best athlete I’ve ever coached,” said Flego of his star shortstop. “She’s a great person who can do it all. She’s got great speed and she’s going to do great things here this season and at Syracuse.”

Two freshmen will start in the outfield for the Caseys with Ashley DeGaetano in right field and Kiley Rochford in centerfield. Another freshman, Emily Lane, won the job at first base giving the Caseys three starting frosh.

Senior Seton Hall commit Gabby Ciancio is back catching after garnering All-Class B North honors when she averaged a stellar .432 at the plate with one home run, 23 RBI, four doubles and two triples. She not only rips the ball, she is a quality backstop that has a gun for an arm.

Junior Alysa Sarino and freshman Gabriella Goehring – Isabella’s sister – will split time at third base when Coppola’s not there and Goehring could see time in right field as well.

“I’m not just saying this because she’s my catcher, but she might be the best catcher in the Shore to be honest with you,” Flego said. “She’s got a great arm; she’s going to Seton Hall and she’s not

“We’re just going to take every day one step at a time, prepare and hope for the best,” said Lane of the upcoming season. “I think we have the pitching and defense but have to work more on hitting. I think if we hit we can be a really good team and it’s up to us (the five seniors) to do it.”

STARTING PITCHING HAS MIDDLETOWN NORTH IN THE CLASS B NORTH DRIVER’S SEAT By Mike Ready MIDDLETOWN NORTH – If Middletown North’s starting pitching is as good as advertised and they can avoid injuries to the staff, the Lions just may be one of the top teams in the Shore Conference this season. In football it’s generally believed that defense wins games. In baseball, when push comes to shove, it all comes down to pitching – and that’s music to the ears of Middletown North, which boast one of the best starting pitching rotations in the Shore this season. The Lions have three senior hurlers who could be penciled in as the number one starter on any team, but University of Alabama commit Tyler Ras will get the opening-day nod from head coach Justin Nathanson. “The pitching staff is really experienced this year with the top three guys all seniors, and we’re looking to build off the success we had last year and hopefully do a little better,” said Ras of the Lions starting rotation. “All three of us are capable of being a one.” Ras, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound righty flame thrower, struck out 46 batters in 40 innings pitched a year ago while walking just eight. He finished the season with a 3-2 record and a 2.80 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP and enters this season with lofty expectations.

ranked eighth in the Shore with a stellar 1.12 ERA along and a just as impressive 0.94 WHIP. He also led the team in innings pitched with 56.1 IP while striking out 59 batters and walking 22. You can expect French to be the bulldog of the staff once again this season. Senior left hander Jason Timmons figures in as the fourth starter and spot reliever after seeing limited time on the mound a year ago while underclassmen Sean Gardner (P/3B), Kevin Fallon (P/OF) and Brandon Sansone (P/INF) will all come out of the pen and vie for playing time in the field. The Lions return 10 seniors from a year ago including six position players. Ras will lead off and play third base when he’s not on the mound and is coming off a season that saw him hit .419 with two home runs, 20 runs scored, 10 stolen bases while driving in nine runs. Senior Brendan Doherty, who will also be counted on as a spot starter and in relief, will bat second and be in centerfield this season after posting a .392 average with 11 RBI and 15 runs scored. Penciled in at the third spot in batting order is the slick-fielding French, who will start at shortstop when he’s not pitching, and the Lions expect French’s offensive numbers to improve

after hitting just .203 with one home run and four RBI in 89 plate appearances, although he did score a solid 13 runs. Timmons will hit cleanup and man left field this season after hitting .288 and leading the team with two home runs and 12 RBI a year ago while junior Brian Quinn will bat fifth and take over first base after posting impressive numbers at the JV level last season. Senior catcher Jake Dillon came on strong after being handed the starting assignment behind the plate in the latter part of last season and he’ll resume catching duties and hit sixth. Expectations are high for sophomore left fielder Ryan Rozinski after he burst on the scene as a freshman last season hitting two home runs in a first-round game of the Monmouth County Tournament that nearly fueled an upset win over second-seeded Monmouth Regional. He’ll bat seventh. Senior Mike Adamson looks to be the frontrunner for the second-base job and bat eighth. “I think we size up very well in the division,” said Ras of his team’s chances. “We just need to come out every day and play up to our potential.”

“With the pitching we have we’re going to shut down teams,” Ras said. “If we can get runs, we’re going to win a lot of games.” The Lions had some problems scoring runs a year ago but Ras feels they’ve corrected that issue. “Basically, it’s the experience. We’ve got 10 seniors this year and we’re all going to step up at the plate,” Ras said. “We’ve got a few juniors and sophomores and even a freshman or two who’ve looked good and we’re going to do anything to get the job done.” Number two starter, right hander Chris Price, emerged as a top starter as a junior a year ago when burst on the scene recording a 4-2 record with a 1.62 ERA, which placed him in the top 20 in that category in the Shore Conference. In 52 innings pitched, Price struck out 20 and walked 12 batters while posting a 1.14 WHIP. Rutgers University commit Garrett French led the team with a 7-2 record last season and he

LAST YEAR’S LOSS IN SECTIONAL FINAL STILL FRESH IN THE MINDS OF SAINT JOHN VIANNEY PLAYERS By Mike Ready

HOLMDEL – The Lancers went 28-1 last season including winning both the Monmouth County Tournament and Shore Conference Tournament championships, but it’s that one loss that sticks in their craw and keeps them awake at night.

Junior catcher Ally Jones is back behind the plate where she picked up second-team All-Shore and second-team AllNon-Public honors a year ago after hitting .384 with three home runs, two triples, three doubles and 24 RBI while excelling in working with her pitchers, throwing out base runners and blocking the plate.

That one loss came against Donovan Catholic in the NJSIAA South, Non-Public A championship. In that game, Saint John Vianney found themselves in a 4-0 hole after one inning, but the never-say-die Lancers put up four runs in the top of the second and another run in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.

Senior Shelli Rivard has been a mainstay at third base for three years and last season was awarded for her play in the hot corner by being named second-team All-Shore and third-team All-Non-Public after fielding third base with impeccable ease while hitting .371 along with belting four home runs and six doubles while driving in 20 runs.

However, Donovan Catholic’s Karina Gaskins drilled a twoout, two-run double in the bottom half of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead and the Griffins star pitcher, Lindsay Nelson, made the lead stand up.

Alexis Agrapeides returns at second base where she shined as a sophomore hitting .338 in 75 at-bats with 19 RBI along five doubles, a triple and a home run, while infield mate, junior Jess Campana is back at shortstop after hitting .353 with 12 RBI, three doubles and 15 runs scored in 51 at bats.

“Julia’s looking really good and working really hard every day in practice,” Baron said of Parker. “She is throwing different pitches and working on her strengths and fixing her weaknesses. She’s trying to be the best.”

After seeing spot duty as a freshman a year ago, Brynn Reiser will get the start at first base for the Lancers. In last year’s Shore Conference final, Reiser laced a pinch-hit twoRBI single down the first base line that tied the game at six in Saint John Vianney’s 8-6 comeback win over Ocean.

The Lancers enter the season ranked No. 2 in the Shore Conference behind Donovan Catholic after finishing there in last season’s final top 10.

The Lancers’ most significant position loss is in the circle where they must replace first-team All-State performer Demi Rivera, now pitching for C.W. Post. However, it should be an easy transition with sophomore Julia Parker stepping into the starting role after a sensational freshman campaign as a hitter and in the circle.

Posting some of the best numbers for a freshman in Shore Conference history, Parker hit .441 with six home runs, 32 RBI, seven doubles and three triples. In the circle she went 9-0 in 54.2 IP allowing 11 runs – just four earned – while striking out 67 and walking 14.

LONG BRANCH

Saint John Vianney’s biggest roadblock to a state championship this season will again be Donovan Catholic, who is the Shore Conference’s No. 1 pre-season pick and is ranked No. 45 in Max Preps Pre-season National Top 50.

Baron is the undisputed leader of the team after being selected first-team All-State by hitting .440 with five home runs, three triples, five doubles and 30 RBI. She’s back to patrol centerfield, a position she plays flawlessly and has a gun for an arm.

Parker, who is also the designated hitter and can play outfield when not pitching, burst onto the scene as a freshman and following the season she was named second-team AllShore by the Asbury Park Press and second-team All-NonPublic by NJ.com.

MANASQUAN

And they’ll more likely than not get their chance at redemption.

However, Saint John Vianney is in good shape itself entering the 2018 season. They return seven starters to a lineup that features two seniors, three juniors and three sophomores.

Julia Parker

“Absolutely,” said Monmouth University commit and senior centerfielder Lindsey Baron when asked if the team is using that loss to Donovan Catholic as motivation. “We definitely want to come back and get Donovan Catholic this year, and hopefully come out on top. Coach (Kim Lombardi) reminds us about it and how we felt and it’s not something we want to go through again. It’s always in the back of our minds.”

Lindsey Baron

Even more agonizing for the Lancers was that they stranded two runners in the sixth and the potential tying run at third in the seventh, but failed to push the tying run across the plate.

Ocean Township Softball Looks CHANGE OF to Build off Cinderella Season

CULTURE FOR ST. ROSE BASEBALL PAYING OFF

By John Sorce

By John Sorce

BELMAR – Coming off a season that saw it go 24-4 and an undefeated 14-0 in the Shore Conference B Central division and advancing to a state sectional final, the Purple Roses of St. Rose are expecting more of the same this season.

OAKHURST – Coming off a 21-8 season in the ultra-competitive Shore Conference B North division, Ocean Township softball is ready for the next step in 2018.

earn everything this year. We are not given anything just because we made it to the Shore Conference finals last year. It’s a new year and we still have to work for every win.”

“B North is very tough,” Ocean Township head coach Ryan Pringle said. “Last year we were probably the strongest division with RBC, Middletown North, Wall, and Middletown South all brought back very good teams. You know you are going to get a good game just about every day and have to play your best, which I think helps come tournament time because you are battle-tested going into the playoffs.”

Ocean Township fell to Burlington Township in the first round of the state tournament. Returning to the Lady Spartans this season is Vasen, who is committed to Yale. She led the state with 14 home runs as a junior last season, while not even playing at 100 percent.

Ocean made a run to the Shore Conference Tournament final last season, where they fell to top-seeded Saint John Vianney in extra innings, who was one of the top teams in the state all season.

“Emma is our captain and was an AllState player last season,” Pringle said. “She’s a very good player and a lot of people don’t know she actually played most of last season injured with a stress fracture in her foot. She had surgery in the off-season and she just got the screws out last week. I think she’s going to have a big year.”

“We kind of had a Cinderella run there, and this year we’re trying to work off of that, but we know that we are not the same team,” said senior catcher Emma Vasen. “We will have to

Also returning for Ocean this season is senior pitcher Giana Graziano, who has been a varsity starter for the last two years, junior outfielder Carly Weisberg, and sophomore second base-

man Alex Ardizzone, who was the starting second baseman as a freshman. This is Pringle’s fifth year as the head coach, and he has seen a lot of talent come through the program in recent years. “It’s been very special to have kids that are this talented, this committed and are this fun to coach,” Pringle said. “It makes my job very easy and I’m very lucky to write their names on the lineup card every day and watch them play.” The Lady Spartans were scheduled to open the season on Mar. 31 at home against Freehold Boro, which is the beginning to a tough slate to open the season. “We have Manasquan, RBC, Middletown South, and Middletown North as four of our first five games,” Pringle said. “Playing a slate like that early in the season is tough, but I think we’re the type of team, and we have been the last few years, that figure it out as the season goes on. We’re trying to play our best softball as we get into the end of April and the beginning of May.”

The Purple Roses were led on the field last season by the Maypother brothers in their junior campaigns. Riley Maypother, a third baseman, hit .520 with five homers, 12 doubles, four triples, and 37 RBIs and was named All-Shore First Team and the Class B Central Hitter of the Year by nj.com and the Asbury Park Press. Brody Maypother, a catcher, was an All-Shore Third Team selection. “The brothers have been huge leaders, not just vocally, but through their work ethic,” head coach Rich Lanko said. “They come to practice and works their butts off. They’re constantly in

the gym and do everything they can to take care of themselves and prepare for the season and that rubs off on the other guys. Everyone looks up to them, even the other seniors. Obviously they have the ability, but they don’t just go through the motions. They come to work and they put the time and effort in.” Lanko, who is his second year as the head coach, is no stranger to the St. Rose baseball program. He served as an assistant from 2008-11. He noted the program wanted to get back to how it was run then. “We run college-type practices and a lot of discipline and hard work, which I think they kind of lost over the last couple of years,” Lanko said. “The biggest thing that changed was them getting to buy into our philosophy and change all that. The seniors last year had three different head coaches, so it was hard for them to buy in, but eventually they all did and we had a pretty good run.” If year one was any indication, it was a big success. And they are hoping for more of the same this season. From what Lanko has seen in practice, that can certainly be the case. “Our kids know the system now,” Lanko said. “Things are going a lot quicker in practice. We’re moving through those things quickly and we’re banging out our situational stuff. But the biggest thing is guys are working hard, which is one of the things we had to change. Guys were just kind of going through the motions and doing what they wanted to do. That’s not the case this year. These kids did a lot of off-season work. Guys are in shape and it’s a huge difference in guys being ready to play and the level they’re practicing at.”
