MANASQUAN GIRLS POSSESS ELITE TALENT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM By Mike Ready
MANASQUAN – The first thing you need to know about this year’s Warriors team is that they have every starter and bench player from a year ago back and better than ever this season.
sophomore campaign averaging 4.0 points per game, 1.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.1 steals. The 5-foot-6 Geissler is a perfect role player for this team and does everything asked of her extremely well.
The second thing you need to know is that this group of seniors has won three straight NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II titles, three Group II championships in a row and has been to the Tournament of Champions final three consecutive years including winning the whole thing in 2015 and finishing ranked No. 1 in state and 14th nationally in the final USA Today Top 25 that year.
An added bonus for the Warriors this season is the return of 6-foot-0 forward/center Victoria Galvan who sat out all last year with a torn ACL. Galvan will help out tremendously in the front court taking some of the rebounding load off of Masonius by putting another big body underneath and she can score as well. Two years ago as a sophomore she averaged 7.5 points per game, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists. Galvan has already committed to the University of South Carolina for softball as a pitcher.
So, what are they going to do for an encore? How about another Tournament of Champions title because that’s what the expectations are for this team. Not only by the team themselves but from a whole lot of people associated with New Jersey girls basketball.
Junior Niki Stevens was added to the rotation last season and became a big-time contributor for the Warriors down the stretch. The 5-foot-10 Stevens can do it all and will be counted on heavily again this season after averaging 4.6 points per game and 2.6 rebounds. Juniors Maggie Kelly and Emma McMenaman both saw minutes last season and will be in the mix again this season.
However, there are a few Shore Conference teams who just might not share that same enthusiasm as the others, including Saint John Vianney and St. Rose. Both those schools are perennial contenders for the Tournament of Champions title and the Lancers, who have 16 T.O.C. championships in program history, beat the Warriors in last season’s T.O.C. final. get through each game to just finally get there.”
Matter of fact, that loss to Saint John Vianney in last year’s T.O.C. final is still fresh in the minds of each and every Manasquan player and is a motivational force behind this season’s goal – another T.O.C. championship.
The Northeastern University-bound Clark and junior Dara Mabrey – both first team All-Shore selections a year ago – make up arguably the best back-court duo in the state. Clark averaged 13.1 points per game, 3.8 assists, 4.9 rebounds along with two steals per game. She has an engine that never quits and plays a lot taller than her 5-foot3 frame. Mabrey averaged 13.8
“That’s definitely on our minds,” four-year starting guard Stella Clark said. “Just getting back to that game at the end of the road for a lot of us would be huge. Each game is the next step in getting there so we have to
points per game, 4.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She scored a game-high 22 points in Manasquan’s first-round win in the T.O.C. then followed that up with 22 points in the semifinals. Freshman sensation Faith Masonius returns, and is already being touted as one of the top players in New Jersey. The 6-foot-1 center/forward was a second team All-Shore pick as a freshman when she averaged 13.4 assists, 2.5 assists, 1.7 steals and
pulled down 222 rebounds averaging 6.3 boards per game.
Manasquan is so loaded with talent that there are just not enough minutes in a game to play everyone, every night. Each of Manasquan’s bench players would be starters on most every other team in the Shore. Now, that’s a nice problem for head coach Lisa Kukoda to deal with night in and night out.
Senior forward/guard Addie Masonius – Faith’s older sister and Wagner commit – returns to the starting lineup and adds another tremendous defensive presence on the court. She averaged 6.4 points per game, 4.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.6 steals. At 5-foot-4 she also plays way above her size and is a terrific post-up player. Sophomore Carly Geissler returns to the front court after a very solid
“Our coach always tells us that she’s going to have to make decisions that are going to make some players unhappy because of all the talent we have on our team,” said Clark when asked about the talent and depth on the team. “We’re all just going to have to learn to be happy and know our positions as players because with all the skilled players we have we have to use them all to our advantage.”

MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP – Mater Dei stamped themselves as big-time players in the Shore Conference basketball landscape last season as the entire program was retooled and the results were immediate. The Seraphs, who captured their first division title since 2005 a year ago, are coming off a 26-2 season which saw them win the program’s first-ever Shore Conference Tournament championship. In that game, they trailed Christian Brothers Academy by 18 points with nine minutes left in the game before going on a spectacular 32-7 run to close it out and stun the Colts for the title. Then as the No. 6 seed in the Non-Public South B semifinals, the Seraphs took No. 2 seed Gill St. Bernard’s to the brink before losing, 54-51, after holding the lead with 1:15 left to play. It was a dream season for Mater Dei, but the Seraphs have bigger dreams this season and for that dream to come true nothing less than a state title will suffice. Gone from last year’s team is NyQuan McCombs, who led the team in points and assists, guards Bryan Harris and Kyle Elliot and forward Josh Green. But the Seraphs return three starters and a group of high-end transfers. Senior Elijah Barnes leads the group of returning starters and has the benefit of not having to deal with recruiting distractions after signing a National Letter of Intent in the off-season to play basketball at Princeton University next year. Senior Elijah Mitchell and junior Kenny Jones both return to the starting lineup with Jones taking on an expanded role to help offset the loss of McCombs. Seniors Marvin Pierre – a standout linebacker on
Mater Dei’s championship football team – and Maleek McKnight are also back after coming off the bench last year. After bringing in nine transfers a year ago, second-year head coach Ben Gamble – a longtime assistant under St. Anthony’s head coach Bob Hurley – brings five more transfers on board this season. Two of those transfers are familiar names to Shore Conference basketball aficionados with junior Kyle Cardaci transferring in from Holmdel and junior Brandon Wilson from Howell. Cardaci was ninth in the Shore Conference in scoring with 17.2 points per game as a sophomore while Wilson averaged 10 points with the Rebels. Junior guard Yasin Pretlow comes over from Roselle Catholic and between him, Cardaci and Wilson, the Seraphs feel they have enough to make up for the loss of Elliot. Pretlow already has an offer on the table from Eastern Kentucky University. Junior Kyle Devaney – a wide receiver
on the football team – will also be in the guard mix. If Mater Dei had a weakness last season it was their lack of size in the front court but they’ve addressed that problem adding two talented big men in a pair of 6-foot-8 transfers. Senior Rajae Muhammed played at Penns Grove last year and Adam Afifi is a native of Egypt in his first year of high school ball. The addition of the two bigs allows Gamble to move Barnes to small forward where he’s projected to play at the next level. Last season Barnes was the only player on the team taller than 6-foot-3 and was forced to play out of position; this will make the Seraphs a more complete team. Mater Dei, who finished ranked No. 1 in the Shore Conference last season, begins the season ranked No. 8 in the NJ.com preseason Top 20 poll and No. 1 in the just released Shore Conference preseason Top 10 although you can be sure Class B Central rival and No. 2 ranked Ranney will be nipping at their heels all season long.

EXPERIENCED TOMS RIVER NORTH ONCE AGAIN HAS CHAMPIONSHIP POTENTIAL By Mike Ready
TOMS RIVER – The Mariners won 23 games last season, took home their third Class A South title in four years and made it to the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive year and third in four years, but for the second season in a row they disappointed in the state tournament with early-round exits.
Rhoden gained third team All-Shore recognition last year as well, averaging 14.2 points, 3.6 steals and 8.8 rebounds a game – good for 10th in the Shore. He led the team in scoring and steals and was second in rebounds. Nyisztor was second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game 3.1 assists and 2.4 steals on the way to first team All-Division honors.
After being upset by No. 13 seed Cherry Hill West in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV tournament, the Mariners hope to reverse that post-season trend and make a run deep into the playoffs this upcoming season.
“It definitely makes my job a lot easier playing with these guys,” Husni said referring to Carrington, Rhoden and Nyisztor. “I’m mostly a defensive player so when I’m hustling I get these guys going and get them pumped up. It’s exciting playing with these guys.”
They’ll have arguably their three best players back from a year ago to try to make that happen along with record-setting quarterback Mike Husni – a defensive wizard on the hardwood – who moves into the starting lineup after coming off the bench last season. Seniors Darrion Carrington – a star on the gridiron as well – and Mike Nyisztor are four-year letter-winners and Jaden Rhoden, who joined the team last season after beginning his career at Central Regional, are all back and make up the backbone of the team. “After getting upset in the first round last year we took it definitely hard,” said Carrington. “We’ve come out this season and worked hard towards our goal of becoming state champions in basketball and go to the TOC – that’s our expectations and we feel it’s obtainable.” Carrington just recently committed to further his academic and athletic career at Yale University after he and Husni led the Mariners to the state finals in football this season. Carrington was a third team All-Shore selection on the court last season when he led the Shore Conference in assists, while averaging 7.5 per game along with 2.5 steals. “We don’t really talk about it but it definitely got to us,” said Husni about last year’s playoff loss. “We were the better team but they were the better team that night.”
The final starting spot is up for grabs as opening day approaches, but Mariners head coach Rory Caswell has a number of options with a talented group of newcomer ready to contribute. Juniors Travis Holland (6-5 forward) and Holden Petrick (5-10 guard) saw playing time last season off the bench and Holland would give the guard-heavy lineup some size to go with the quartet of guards that will anchor the lineup. Senior guard Sean O’Donnell led the junior varsity squad in scoring as a sophomore before missing last season and should be another scoring option for Caswell. An intriguing prospect is 6-foot-5 freshman forward Najea Hallenback who could also add some length to the front court if not as a starter than off the bench. How quickly he can adapt to the speed and strength of players on the varsity high school level will determine how much time on the court he gets. Mark Mogate (Jr. 5-10 guard), Elliot Dak (Jr. 6-7 forward), Nick Perna (Jr. 6-2 guard), Allen Schlanger (Jr. 6-4 forward) and Nick Dunzack (So. 6-5 forward) will be competing for playing time as well. The Mariners appear on paper to be the class of the Shore Conference public school teams and the most equipped to upset Mater Dei and Ranney in the Shore Conference Tournament. That would be a nice stepping stone en route to a state title.

DAVE CALLAHAN TAKES OVER REINS AT RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN SUCCEEDING LONG-TIME HEAD COACH GEORGE SOURLIS By Mike Ready
RUMSON – Former Rumson-Fair Haven boys assistant coach Dave Callahan will now be courtside for the Lady Bulldogs, replacing legendary Rumson girls basketball head coach George Sourlis.
“Megan is a tremendous athlete who really knows how to play the game,” Callahan said. “Katie is going to NYU and is one of the best shooters in the Shore Conference.”
Sourlis, the winningest coach in Shore Conference history, officially announced his retirement last April after 30 seasons of coaching the girls program, finishing his career with 653 wins and 199 losses. His teams captured 14 NJSIAA sectional titles, including 10 straight from 2000 to 2009, five NJSIAA overall group titles, five appearances in the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions and six WOBM Christmas Classic championships.
Junior Mikaela McGarvey is back after missing all of last season with an injury and the 5-foot11 wing player should open some eyes this season after playing AAU all summer and fall. She’s lightning quick and plays much bigger than her size. “Mikaela is the sleeper on the team,” Callahan said. “She’s a great athlete and great shooter that really knows how to play the game; she’s going to have a great year.”
Sourlis played a huge role in transforming the Shore Conference girls basketball program into one of the most competitive conferences in New Jersey and one of the top conferences in the nation, consistently placing teams in the top 20 nationally. “George is unbelievable; he’s a legend in the Shore,” Callahan said. “He and I are really good friends and from talking after games I had a sense he was leaning towards retirement. After being offered the job and thinking it over, the first person I called was George. He was like listen, ‘you’re the guy they want to take over – I think you’d be great,’ and I said ‘I’m going to be calling you a lot,’ and I do. We talk two or three times a week. I’m super excited. One of the great things George did at Rumson was to set the bar extremely high, and I want to keep it there and maybe try to push it up a little bit.” Callahan has served as an assistant coach under Bulldogs boys head coach Chris Champeau for the past six seasons, during which the program reached the Shore Conference Tournament championship game for the first time in 2011 and won the tournament for the first time in 2015. He began his coaching career coaching the New Jersey Wildcats travel team in the mid 2000’s before taking over the Forrestdale Middle School program before Champeau recruited him to join his staff in his second season at Rumson. Callah-
Junior guards Ana Brendel and Phoebe Spernal, senior forward Abigail Kelly and junior guard Makenna Maguire, along with 6-foot-2 freshman forward Lucy Adams make up Callahan’s bench. an played basketball at East Catholic High School in Manchester, Connecticut, completed the ROTC program at Villanova and served as a naval officer for five years. Sourlis went out on top and left Callahan in good shape. The Bulldogs won 22 games last season losing to Manasquan by just three points in the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals. The Bulldogs then made a run to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II finals before once again falling to Manasquan. The Warriors lost to Saint John Vianney – ranked No. 9 nationally in the final USA Top 25 – in the Tournament of Champions final and finished ranked No. 2 in the state. “I’m stepping into a situation where we’ve got a great core coming back,” Callahan said. “So, George didn’t leave on a down year or anything like that, he left a great group of girls for us and we’re excited to get started this year.” Heading up that core of returners are 6-foot-2 senior center Hannah Scanlon – a first team AllClass A Central selection a year ago – and third
team All-Shore junior point guard Tori Hyduke. After averaging 11.2 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists last season, Scanlon will continue her academic and playing career at Bryant University next season. Hyduke has superstar potential that’s just waiting to be released. She shows outstanding quickness on her moves to the basket, is an adept passer (4.3 assists), an underrated defender and her shooting range is D1 caliber. “It starts with Hannah,” Callahan said. “She’s improved so much over the last year. She has a tireless work ethic and just loves the game and I haven’t seen a better point guard all summer and fall than Tori; the sky’s the limit for her.” Also back are senior guards Katie Foos and Megan Volker. Foos is a big-game player, who at times carried the Bulldogs offense with her sharp shooting abilities. Last season, Foos made 69 3-point shots (second in the Shore Conference), while Volker went from a role player to a starter and is a top defender and rebounder who can guard all five positions. With last season’s experience you should see her score more this season.
The Bulldogs starting five appears on paper to be as good as any in the Shore Conference but some feel they lack the depth of the other juggernauts in the conference but Callahan disagrees. “I think our starting five is amazing,” Callahan said. “But I think our bench players have gotten so much better over the summer and fall and there are a lot of games where we can continue to develop these girls and get them ready to go. I have confidence in all of them and expect big things to come from our freshman Lucy Adams, who’s going to play a lot.” Rumson will be a very good team this season; the question is will they compare favorably with the top echelon teams such as Manasquan, Saint John Vianney or St. Rose. “We expect to win,” Callahan said. “One thing I want to instill in the girls is that, yea, these are great programs and have great coaches and great players, but I want them to walk on the court – just like George did – expecting to win these game and I think we’re getting there when it comes to that.”

COLTS EMBRACE CHANGE FOR UPCOMING SEASON By Michael Ward
The Christian Brothers Academy Colts are more optimistic than most teams going into the upcoming season. Despite losing much of last year’s scoring capability to graduation, CBA has plenty of promising talent that during their senior year will help drive the Colts toward a successful season. The change in formula of what will make the Colts successful this year comes as a necessary refresh off the back of a season last year that saw CBA narrowly miss a Shore Conference title as well as getting knocked out of the Non-Public A state sectional race. Leading the charge primarily will be the trio of Lucas Waraksa, Chris Lautato and Matt Lautato. All three players, as well as junior Robert Mahala seemed to share a similar confidence when asked about the upcoming season.
season gets underway. We think plenty of people are sleeping on us going into this season, but even though we’re going to be a different team, we’re still going to be a good team,” he said. Christian Brothers Academy finished last season with a final record of 22-6. The team had to endure close but critical losses over the course of the season, such as their loss to Mater Dei in the Shore Conference final championship game. Second-seeded CBA came within seven points of top-seeded Mater Dei in the 50-43 loss. In their state sectional bracket, the Colts fended off a close challenge from Donovan Catholic and came out on top, 4943, to advance to the semi-finals. That’s when CBA, seeded second, faltered and was upset by third-seeded St. Augustine who would eventually capture the entire tournament.
“We’re really confident going into this season,” said Chris Lautato. “We’re a different team from last year and we have a lot to prove going into this year.”
This year’s seniors have to fill several large pairs of shoes following up the seniors of last year. Recent graduates Pat Andree, Sam Houston and Jack McGuire were heavily relied on to utilize scoring opportunites and frequently racked up double digits in points per game.
Waraksa, a guard and one of CBA’s co-captains, continued on the current roster’s strengths. “This year we’re much stronger defensively and we’re going to surprise a lot of people once the
As the season progresses, CBA will show spectators whether or not they are up to the challenge of competing and seeking retribution for their tough losses last year.
St. Rose Set To Capitalize On Returning Talent By Michael Ward
The Purple Roses of Belmar’s St. Rose High School may be set for a landmark year if the proper pieces fall into place and a key returning players continue to build on their fundementals. St. Rose, who finished last season with an impressive 25-5 record, made it all the way to the Non-Public South B finals where they were defeated by an unstoppable Rutgers Prep by a score of 65-47. The Purple Roses were cut down prematurely in the Shore Conference Tournament semi-finals after a tough 59-54 loss to Saint John Vianney. Key returning players for St. Rose will be the senior duo of Jennifer Louro and Ellyn Stoll and junior Mikayla Markham. Markham was a notable standout as she was lethal from 3-point territoy, racking up 77 shots over the course of the season. Her 13.7 points per game average will ensure that she’ll be an effective weapon throughout the season. Jen Louro, a guard and a second-year team captain for the Purple Roses, will be one to watch as well on defensive rebounds and scoring a healthy 10.3 points
per game. Stoll, also a guard and co-captain, will be a threat in the paint scoring roughly 10.8 points per game. The schedule for St. Rose will allow them to find what works best for their offense and defense in the first few games. Their home opener puts them up against Keyport, who will most likely put up little resistance as St. Rose ramps up their season. Point Plesant Beach and Asbury Park will round out the year for St. Rose and should have the Purple Roses come out on top in both matchups. Early in 2017, St. Rose will have to be adequately prepared for tougher matchups against Trinity Hall, Mater Dei and Ranney. The Purple Roses will end their regular season with a three-game swing consisting of Mater Dei, Ranney and Manasquan. With enough success in the regular season, St. Rose could have the potential to get past Saint John Vianney in the Shore Conference Tournament and bypass Rutgers Prep in the state finals should the opportunities present themselves.

Neptune Sets Sights On Championship Season By Michael Ward
The Scarlet Fliers were an excellent team last year, but didn’t have enough to change what seemed to be destiny. As Middletown South cruised through the season on their way to their third consecutive Central, Group 3 sectional title, Neptune fought their way tooth and nail to make it to the championship game and face Middletown South toe to toe. But as time wound down, Neptune found themselves outscored and overmatched, finally being defeated by a margin of 55-40.
Neptune also found themselves knocked out of the Shore Conference Tournament in the quaterfinal round in a decisive 52-26 game against Rumson-Fair Haven. These losses may prove to be a critical step in the Scarlet Fliers pushing themselves further toward winning critical games and improving upon last year’s 23-5 season. Neptune may be at a particular advantage due to several returning players who will prove to be important pieces to the puzzle. Desiree Allen, who had a spectacular season as a junior last year, will look to rack up her points per game average toward the 22.4 mark, where she ended the season last year. Support from other seniors such as Alexis Bennett, Di’Avian Foster and Brianna Love will be critical for Neptune to limit their losses and bear down on opponents, especially going into the home stretch on tournament play later in the season. The schedule for Neptune throughout the regular season favors them in the usual nature of their opponents and the frequency of which some matchups occur. The Scarlet Fliers should find easy wins against Marlboro in both their season opener and again on January 19th when the two face off again. The same can be said of two matchups against Howell on the 5th and 31st of January. Neptune will finish their regular season playing against Manalapan, Colts Neck and Trenton Catholic in early February.

Lakewood Looks To Be Standout In Shore-B South By Michael Ward
As Lakewood enters in the 2016-2017 season, filling the holes in their offense will prove to be the toughest challenge the Ocean County team will face. After losing three of their top four scorers over the summer, Lakewood will have to depend heavily on the leadership of Adiam Palmer, the 6-foot-3 senior who scored an average of 12.9 points per game last year. Coach Randy Holmes, who is entering his 11th year as head coach of the Lakewood team, drove home the importance of developing an unrivaled degree of team chemistry and putting an emphasis on speed throughout the season. “The last couple of seasons have been very successful; we worked hard and found early chemistry,” said Holmes when asked about the state of the team going into the season. “This year, we don’t have as much chemistry but if we keep working at it in prac-
Page 15
tice and putting in the work we’ll be in good shape toward the end of the season.” Lakewood is particularly lucky compared to some of their rivals that they didn’t see a mass exodus of talent as a result of graduations. The Piners will have nine players returning this season with three new members to fill the gaps as best they can. The makeup of the team currently stands at two freshmen, one sophomore, eight juniors and four seniors. The shifting dynamics of the Lakewood team from last year and the one that will lace up this year will translate to a different playing style for the Piners. “We’re going to have to play faster, press a lot, and be more parameter oriented,” Holmes said in regard to what Lakewood’s playing style will look like throughout the season. Coach Holmes stressed that every game will be important to his team, especially in the early portion of the season. But some games that will be of extra importance to his squad will be their matchup against Mater Dei on January 29 and the game against Our Savior New American, a New York team, at the end of the season. Last year, the Piners finished the season 21-7 and made it to the third round of the Central, Group 3 Tournament where they fell to Ewing, 71-64.

HOLMDEL – Last season Saint John Vianney won its first Tournament of Champions title since 2009, its first Shore Conference Tournament championship since 2005 and won its second Non-Public Group A title in a row on the way to winning 31 games with only one loss.
proaches. Doring, at 5-foot-11 adds size with ball handling and shooting skills while Furch has the ability to shoot three’s, post up or explode off the dribble. A pair of sophomores will be in the rotation and according to Karpell, will open some eyes with their play.
Long Branch Wrestlers Success On The Mat
Ranney Falls Short in Shore Conference Playoffs
However, most of the pieces on that championship team have graduated including first team All-State guard Kelly Campbell (DePaul), third team All-Shore guard Tina Lebron (Caldwell College), All-Division selection Zoe Pero (St. Peter’s), Kelly Crouch (Wagner), GiGi Caponergo (LIU), Megan Furch (Haverford) and Venessa Pino.
Sajada Bonner is a 6-foot-0 forward/guard, while Bre Bellamy is a 6-foot-0 forward and both can flat out play.
