Coaches’ Motto: Take Nothing for Granted By Michael Ward
More often than not, we focus on the athletes on the court when it comes to talking about high school basketball.
asked about the prospects for this year, Bilodeau felt returning players with family ties would contribute to the team’s success. “It’s still early but we’re looking to some of our returning guys such as Ryan Jenson and Jack Sheehan but as well as their younger brothers Devon Jenson Tommy Sheehan who are also returning. It always helps to have a tremendous amount of experience back.” Even though thankful for the roster that he has at his disposal, the head coach is not one to take anything for granted, especially when it comes to their opponents.
But the coaches are equally a driving force in the success of a team. These coaches balance their job, usually as an educator at the school and the responsibilities of taking care of a team. To say the team is a responsibility is a truthful statement, but in fact not in a burdensome manner. These athletes grow to be an extended family and a support system for everyone involved. Every season, teams have to overcome a new set of challenges in order to be successful. This is especially present at the High School level where teams’ best players are able to improve on their skills until they graduate, at which point a team is left looking for younger talent to fill their shoes. “We lost three seniors, Nicole Shatsky, Dani Mark, and Kristi Casale. We’re very young, but we have two leaders coming back in Tatum Evans and Jessie Iacobellis,” explains head coach Brad Hagensen. “We look to them for leadership and they have been fantastic.” Marlboro shocked many last year with their 21-7 season that ended just shy of a Group 4 Championship. Winning their Divisional Title, they went on to face Shawnee for Round 1 of the Sectional Bracket and narrowly lost 49-40. The struggle to keep promising talent rising through the ranks was also felt at Rumson Fair-Haven, where Head Coach Chris Champeau has had to confront the challenge head-on. “We’re
“There are no easy matchups. A good example of that is our opening night against Rumson at Manasquan. A-Central has always been a tough division. There’s been some teams out of A-Central that have gone far and done well in state tournaments Rumson, Shore Regional for the last two years, Holmdel took a Sectional a few years back; It’s always been a good, competitive division and no one’s been able to run away with it. The schedule is very challenging and that’s good for our guys.”

MIDDLETOWN SOUTH GIRLS PUSHING FOR ENCORE PERFORMANCE By Mike Ready
MIDDLETOWN – The Eagles, who return four starters from last season’s team which won the NJSIAA Group III title for the program’s
career at Division I Loyola University of Maryland last month. The 5-foot-10 Karcz is quite possibly the best player in the Shore Conference this season, and the Eagles will ride her greatness as far as they can. After averaging 17.6 points and handing out 2.4 assists per game last season, Kartz is best known for her offensive prowess. However, it’s actually her superhuman-like defensive play that drives the Middletown South bus. Her amazing 6.8 steals per game average easily led the Shore Conference, and her nine rebounds per game placed her in the top 10. In the state final, she recorded a game-high 16 rebounds and had five steals along with scoring 16 points.
first ever state championship, appear poised to make another run at the state title and one more trip to the Tournament of Champions. Back is two-time first team AllShore guard and Shore Conference Class A North Player of the Year Stephanie Karcz, who officially committed to continue her
“Everybody talks about the point,” said Eagles head coach Tom Brennan in his 20th year at the helm and the Star Ledger 201415 Coach of the Year. “But it’s her ability to dominate a game on the other side of the ball that allows for us to do what we do. When we’re really going we’re doing it on the defensive end and flying out on transition and that’s where we’re getting a lot of our success.”
“Steff is not only a dominate player, but really a great ambassador for our program,” Brennan added. “Going into her senior year, she’s done a tremendous job of nurturing our incoming freshman group putting her needs in the preseason on the back burner,
allowing these kids to gain confidence. That’s the type of person see is.” However, it’s far from a one-man show at Middletown South as the Eagles bring back three very talented starters that come with a
ton of experience from last year’s championship team. At guard is 5-foot-7 junior Haley Dalonzo, who averaged 8.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game last season and added 10 points in the state final. Junior Alexandra Balsamo is a combination guard/ forward averaging 8.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game and is a force in the paint. Also returning is 5-foot-10 Julie Valkos at forward, who was named second-team All-Class A North last season after stellar campaign that saw pull down four rebounds per game while scoring at a 8.9 points per game clip. Another excellent defense player, Valkos averaged two steals and one block a game.

Senior Brianne Naughton will get a chance to fill the void that departed All-Class A center Angela DeBartolome left at center after graduating and has looked solid in preseason while sophomore forward Gabby Cook, who saw the floor in 18 games last season is back and will add another defensive presence on the court. “Gabby’s the goal keeper for the soccer team and has great quickness and good reaction skills,” Brennan said. “She’s a very athletic kid and also has some good height (5-foot-9) and length. We’ll use her to defend the post and step into the passing lanes.” Brennan is welcoming in an outstanding freshman class that includes his daughter Isla, who’s vying for the start at point guard for the Eagles. Three additional freshmen, 6-foot-0 center/forward Eve Pirie and a pair of 5-foot-10 forwards in Samantha Keenan and Grace Curtis appear game-ready, and will add depth as well, as impressive size to the already loaded roster. “There’s definitely some height there,” Brennan said. “Our biggest adjustment for the younger kids is how quickly they can adjust to the speed and the strength of the game at this level.” Middletown South has a super blend of experience in both their starters and their bench along with an absolute knock-out incoming freshmen class. Combined, that should bold well for the Eagles as they attempt to repeat as Group III champions and take it to the next level in the Tournament of Champions. “I think we got a really good shot at getting there,” Brennan said. “I think our kids are ready, they’re focused and have some talent; there’s no reason to think we wouldn’t be there.”

Toms River North Looks to Extend Success By Michael Ward
The Mariners of Toms River North had everything going for them. But sometimes as they found out, that wasn’t enough. After an impressive season of 21 wins and 6 losses, one of the best in the division, and a first seed entrance into the South, Group 4 Tournament, Toms River saw themselves defeated in a tough battle with Rancocas Valley in just the second round. The 8th Seeded Rancocas Valley, finished with a similar record of 21-7 after losing in a subsequent round 3 match-up. But this year, Toms River North is looking to go all the way with the outstanding squad they’ve put together for the upcoming 20152016 Season. Among the rising stars in Toms River North’s Basketball Program are Juniors Darrion Carrington and Mike Nyisztor, as well as Senior Patrick Marinacco. These three alone should
be enough to overwhelm defenders who show even the smallest of mistakes or miscalculate how effective these players can be. In his sophomore year, Darrion Carrington made 12 shots from the paint as well as 3 from three point range. He was also one of the team leaders in free throws with an impressive 18 sunk. 51 points scored over 10 games helped his team greatly, which is something he’s destined to repeat. Junior Mike Nyisztor will also be a threat on the court. Scoring a team high 129 points over 10 games with stats available, he hit an unfathomable 29 three point shots and 12 in the paint. He’ll the one every coach will be warning their players about before they leave the locker room as they face this tough Toms River Team. Patrick Marinacco had a good season last year and will repeat his success on the court
during his final season. With 40 points scored from 2 point range and 9 from three, along with his 20 free throw shots across 6 games with stats available, Patrick will be a threat in his final high school season. The Mariners will have a favorable schedule to start the season. With games against Lacey and Middletown South to start, they are projected to cruise past both teams and give them a 2-0 boost to start the season. After that, they’ll see if they can give themselves a gift of a victory against in-town rival Toms River East before Christmas Break. In the new year, they’ll face off against Toms River South, Manalapan and Brick Memorial. Later in January, they’ll face the team that ended their championship hopes last year, Rancocas Valley. They’re hoping with enough momentum and basketball skill, they can get a winner that will be sweeter than most.

AFTER SURPRISE RUN, MARLBORO LOOKS FOR STATE REPEAT By Ted Kaiser
MARLBORO— When the buzzer sounded at the end of overtime, the Marlboro girls’ basketball team stunned many observers with a 60-52 victory over Monroe in the Central Jersey Group IV Final. The surprise Sectional Championship was not much of a shock to a confident team. Senior Nicole Shatsky scored 27 points to lead the way and avenge a loss to Monroe in the 2014 CJ Group IV quarterfinals, a game that Shatsky missed due to injury. This winter, Marlboro will put another strong team on the court, but they must replace Shatsky, a career 1,000-point scorer, among other key players. “We lost three seniors, Nicole Shatsky, Dani Mark, and Kristi Casale. We’re very young, but we have two leaders coming back in Tatum Evans and Jessie Iacobellis,” explains head coach Brad Hagensen. “We look to them for leadership and they have been fantastic.”
Our commitment to defense will be key. We work very hard defensively and that is our signature,” says Hagensen. At guard, junior Molly Weiss returns with some experience. She is a combo guard who is a good shooter and leader on the floor. Other junior guards include Jenn Angelone and Jillian Krantz. Sophomores Jessica Broad and Isabella O’Hare figure to
be in the rotation. Three freshmen, Gisella Romeo, Theresa Besso, and Allie Garcia are likely to see playing time. The Class A North Division will be a challenge with perennial favorite Middletown South expected to be a top five caliber team in the Shore conference. Manalapan is always tough and Middletown North appears
set for a solid season. Marlboro will play in the Mount St. Dominic’s Academy Holiday Festival in Caldwell on December 26th against Franklin, then go on to face Metuchen on the 27th and Rutgers Prep on the 29th. They also have non-conference games against Notre Dame and Nutley during the regular season to help prepare them for another potential run in the Central Jersey Group IV playoffs.
Tatum Evans is a senior center who is among the top players at her position in the Shore Conference. The offense will largely revolve around Evans who should emerge as a double-digit points per game scorer. Senior forward Jessie Iacobellis joins Evans for a very solid front line. The Mustangs should be balanced offensively with several perimeter players who can score and pass. “We have a lot of inexperience, but have come a long way since we first started.

BARRY LED RUMSON-FAIR HAVEN WILL BE IN THE MIX FOR TITLE IN RUGGED CLASS A CENTRAL By Mike Ready
RUMSON – The bad news for the Bulldogs is that 2014-15 Shore Conference Player of the Year Brendan Berry broke a bone in his hand in preseason practice. The good news is that his head coach, Chris Champeau, expects him back on the floor in a week or so.
Senior guard Colin McDevitt – a 6-foot-1 guard – will be in the rotation as the first man off the bench and 5-foot-11 sophomore guard Teddy Sourlis has been shooting the lights out of the gym in preseason and will get plenty of looks as well.
After averaging 22.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 4.3 steals last season, Barry will once again be the centerpiece of a very different looking Bulldog team this year and losing him for any significant period of time would be a crushing blow, especially with Rumson already having to replace four starters from last season’s Shore Conference Tournament championship team which won 24 games.
Overall depth should not be a problem for the Bulldogs; they have the legs, though it might just take some time for some of the younger players to adjust. But once whole, the Bulldogs should be ready to defend their SCT title and make a run at an elusive state title after reaching the Central Jersey Group II sectional semifinals in four of the last six years including one appearance in the finals in 2014.
In one, if not the greatest, upsets in Shore Conference Tournament history, Barry shook off a 1-for-5 first half to score more points (25) than Christian Brothers Academy scored the entire game. He shot 7-for-8 from the field including three, three-pointers in the second half to help the Bulldogs turn a 19-19 halftime tie into a rout.
“We’re trying to build a culture now at Rumson,” Champeau said. “From all the leagues, to Thursday night light’s, to the D league there are kids that hopefully each year now we can bring in. Our support has been tremendous. I feel the ‘Dawgpound’ is the best student section in the Shore. I call them the ‘Sixths’ like the Seahawks 12th man; we’re going to make up shirts.”
Gone from that team is forward Morgan Maguire, and guards Kenneth Famulary, Alex Geiger and Jack Luby and the Bulldogs will need to replace the 30-plus combined points a game the four of them averaged, not to mention the toughness Maguire brought to the game underneath the basket. Even with Barry in the opening night lineup it might take the Bulldogs some time to come together and jell as a team but the potential is there to make another run at the division title after being a part of a three-way tie last season with Manasquan and Shore all at 10-2. The question is, how far can they fall off the division pace before it’s too late. “We’re a second half of the season team this year,” Champeau said. “Listen, we lost four starters, we got to put the pieces together and it’s going to take us a little while. I tell the team ‘it’s not how your start but how you finish.’ If I had the choice I’d rather be healthy in February against Manasquan then December.” Mickey Schluter saw extensive playing time last season as one of the first men off the bench and the 6-foot-2 senior will get the start this season at guard opposite Barry in the backcourt after averaging four points, 2.5 rebounds and one assist per game a year ago.
Massive Eliajah McAllister was a crowd favorite last season as a freshman off the bench for his shot-blocking abilities while picking up increasing amounts of minutes on the floor as the year went on. The 6-foot-7 McAllister is a game changer and gets the starting nod at center for the Bulldogs.
“Last year we won the SCT when no one expected it,” Champeau added. “Now we want to go after the states. To me, Barry is one of the top guards in the state and probably the top three-point shooter in the state so we’re hoping he can lead us to the Promised Land.”
“With Eliajah it might be the first time in the history of Rumson I’m going to go inside-out,” Champeau said. “You know us, all guards. He’s great though, he and Brendan are going to be our centerpiece, inside-out, and fire-and-ice.” Junior Mike O’Connor – starting quarterback for the Bulldogs since his freshman year – saw action in 18 games a year ago and his all-around athleticism will be a big plus for the Bulldogs as he steps into a starting role this season. Another football player, junior Tyler Pierson, looks to have the inside track as the fifth starter for Rumson. He’s a big bodied (6-foot-4) forward with a soft touch that that will add some toughness in the paint as well as bringing the ball to the hoop.

MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP SETTING SIGHTS ON CLASS B SOUTH TITLE By Mike Ready
MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP – Manchester Township last won a divisional title in 2004, while Lakewood has won seven straight divisional titles. And while the Hawks haven’t come out on top in a game against Lakewood since opening night 2009, this Manchester Township team just may have the horses to dethrone the Piners. The Hawks won 16 games last season and had a first round win in the Central Jersey Group II playoffs before giving Shore Conference Tournament champion Rumson-Fair Haven a run for their money in the quarterfinals. However, they fell three games off the pace for the Class B South crown to Lakewood and endured two lopsided losses to the Piners in the process, showing them how far they still had to go. As a group, Manchester feels it’s a now-or-never year for this team as they bring back four starters from a year ago, including one of the best backcourt tandems in the Shore - if not the state - in senior guards Shavar Reynolds and Jordan Torney – both All-Class B South selections a year ago. The two guards are four-year starter for the Hawks and appear to be on the cusp of stardom with their all-around play. Reynolds averaged 15.1 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 3.8 steals and one block per game while Torney – a high-division I recruit as a track and field jumper – put up 14.5 points, 7.7 boards, 3.5 assists, 4.2 steals and 1.6 blocks per game. The almost eight steals between them is a reflection of how their pressure defense forces turnovers in their ultra-fast paced transitional game as they fly up-and-down the court. It’s similar to Lakewood’s and it’s time for the Hawks to beat the Piners at their own game.
Senior center Israel Almestica also returns as a starter to give Manchester much needed frontcourt size after losing 6-foot-4 forward Robert Planter to graduation. Almestica pulled down a whopping 245 rebounds a year ago while averaging 10.2 boards and scoring 6.5 points per game. Junior L.J. Robinson is back on the wing and is a legitimate scoring threat from anywhere on the court after putting up nine points a game last season. Sophomore Khari Jenkins is the only newcomer to break into the starting lineup after seeing minutes on the court in 16 games last season. He’ll take on the starting point guard duties, although Reynolds typically will run the show especially when he’s needed to break the press. Junior guard/forward Alex Lunn saw action in 22 of the Hawks 24 games last season as a sophomore and brings toughness and game experience, while 6-foot-4 senior forward Gavin Pabst should help out in the paint after appearing in 12 games a year ago and looks ready to take the next step. Zion Mununga – a transfer from Pennsylvania – is a junior forward who looks ready to contribute along with 6-foot4 senior forward Ryan Hartnett as well. Lunn, Pabst, Mununga, and Hartnett give Manchester a solid bench with enough depth to cover each position and spell the starters when needed. Given the Hawks makeup, this team gives Manchester its best chance – and maybe its last chance in the foreseeable future – to take back the Class B South title and perhaps make a nice run in the state playoffs.

Lancers Look to Secure Championship By Michael Ward
The Lady Lancers of Saint John Vianney will have one major factor that can contribute to their success this season. Unity. All of the girls who played last year were Juniors or younger, leaving the group open to push forward on last year’s success without having to acclimate to the elements a new player could bring. This could prove to be a big factor in driving Saint John Vianney, as other schools in Monmouth and Ocean Counties have to struggle to fill voids left by star players who graduated last year. Amongst the now seniors leading the charge, Kelly Campbell is probably the biggest threat. 401 points scored last year, 150 of which came from free throws. She’s aggressive and isn’t afraid to eat a foul and turn that into points for the team. She also racked up 40 three pointers and 47 assists. This year’s juniors are deserving of mention as well, especially Kimi Evans. Evans racked
up 327 points over the season with 144 field goals and 54 rebounds. Standing at 6’3”, she accumulated 13 blocks over the season, a team high. Last year, Saint John Vianney earned themselves a spot in the coveted Tournament of Champions, entering in the 3rd seed. After a victorious outing against 6th seeded New Providence to advance, they were knocked out by St. Rose in a nail biting 47-43 loss. But the issue of leaving players will leave St. Rose as not the same team they were in 2015, playing to SJV’s advantage. Saint John Vianney opens up their season with a game against Matawan, then faces off against Rumson-Fair Haven before the holiday break. In 2016 they face Holmdel, reigning champions Manasquan and Christ the King. We’ll see how the team uses their synergy to their advantage in the coming season.

COMMENTS: The NonPublic South A champions Colts return 6-foot-8 first-team All-Shore forward Pat Andree but lose first-team AllShore forward Jack Laffey, now playing at Adelphi University. However, 6-foot-7 forward and second-team All-Class A North selection Jack McCLASS A NORTH Guire also returns for the Colts to make up one of the most formidable front courts in the Shore Conference. Senior guard John Salcedo is also a returning starter who can get it done on both sides of the ball and has the ability to hit the open three. Newcomers fighting for starting jobs include: Robert Mahala, Sam Houston, Jack Boyan, Luke Waraksa and Connor Strickland. Marlboro must replace all-division players George Elghoul and Matt Ringle but juniors P.J. Ringle, Dan Weiss and Ryan LaRocca all return. The 6-foot-6 Weiss will give the Mustangs size up front and Ringle - a three year starter - averaged seven points, three rebounds and two assists and LaRocca will provide scoring punch in the backcourt. However, the centerpiece of the team just may be 6-foot-8 senior center Matt Dean once he completes his 30-day stint on the sidelines after transferring from CBA. Freehold Township lost three all-division players but do bring back third-year starting guard Nick Facendo and 6-foot-4 starting forward John Carrol. Sophomore Jazeem Foster and junior junior Bobby Weise will be counted on for some scoring punch from the backcourt. Middletown North will have to make up for the fact that they lost their three top scorers but welcome the return of 6-foot-3 senior guard Colin Frawley, who missed all of last year recovering from ACL surgery after averaging seven points per game as a sophomore. Juniors Marc Cerbo and John Tomesetti, as well as sophomore David Campbell all contributed in the backcourt last season while juniors John Swift and Isaiah McDowell will be forward as well as 6-foot-3 sophomore Tyler Ross. Senior guard Matt Morton, sophomore guard Alex Morton and senior forward Steve Palumbo all return for Howell while senior forward Chris Hannigan, senior guard Jake Curry, junior guard Chris Cassandra, sophomore guard Asante Worthy, junior forward Markee Gill and junior forward Dan Mastrianni are back for the Freehold Boro.
Class A Central 1) Manasquan 2) Rumson-Fair Haven 3) St. John Vianney 4) Raritan 5) Holmdel 6) Monmouth 7) Shore COMMENTS: Manasquan is the clear cut favorite in the division even though Rumson brings CLASS A CENTRAL back Player of the Year Brendan Berry. The Warriors bring back their top two all-around players from a year ago and each has a younger brother ready to contribute. Senior forward Ryan Jensen enters his third year as a starter after leading the Shore Conference in rebounds with a 13.9 per game average while scoring 12.2 points and blocking 2.2 shots per game. Senior guard Jack Sheehan – a Notre Dame baseball recruit – is another three-year starter while juniors Devin Jensen and Tom Sheehan – also committed to Notre Dame for baseball – move into the starting lineup. Seniors Shane Flannigan and Kyle Coyne are also key contributors at guard and forward respectively. Barry must keep the Bulldogs afloat while the team acclimates itself to new personnel after losing four starter from last season. Senior Mickey Schluter gets the start at guard after being a key contributor last season while massive 6-foot-7 sophomore center Elijah McAllister prepares to be a centerpiece of the Bulldog offense. Mike O’Connor is at guard with Colin McDevitt also at guard and junior Tyler Pierson at forward. St. John Vianney is a sleeper team that returns its top two scorers and All-Class A Central selections from a year ago in forward Grant Goode and guard Zach Howarth. The Lancers also return starters Kevin Callari and Matt DeBrizzi and added 6-foot-6 Neptune transfer Marcque Ellington to add size and strength to the front court. Three starter return to the lineup for Raritan, led by senior first-team All-Class A Central guard Joe Strand with seniors Eddie Tynion and Jordan Smith also returning to the starting lineup. Seniors Jon Rodriquez, John Guccione, Mason Sheehan and Dan Lehan are potential starters that will add depth as well. For Holmdel, senior John Miller and sophomore Kyle Cardaci return to the backcourt while 6-foot-6 senior Kevin Ziznewski will be at forward and 6-foot-7 senior Max Phillips will be a key down low at center. Senior Matt Mooney returns as the top scorer and rebounder for Monmouth while Shore must virtually its entire starting lineup and bench.
Class B Central CLASS A SOUTH
COMMENTS: Toms River North won 21 games, made it to the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals and won the division. This season, the Mariners return a trio of starters, a solid bench from last season ready to take the next step and an impact transfer. Pat Marinaccio, Mike Nyisztor and Darrion Carrington all return to the starting lineup while senior Hunter Petrick and Mike Husni will be important role players. Central Regional transfer Jaden Rhoden will also start in the backcourt with senior forwards Anthony Storino and Quintin Alex-Manning vying for time in the front court. Southern returns the leading scorer in the Shore Conference in 6-foot-6 senior Peyton Wijnert to go with junior point guard Ethan DuBois, who finished second in the conference in assists and became a scoring threat as well. The Rams did lose 1000-point scorer and four-year starter Jake Logue an center Eric Ray and they’ll be tough to replace. Juniors Matt Mershon and Bill Howard each bring solid 6-foot-3 frames and add muscle up front to make up for the loss of Ray. Senior Ryan West leads a long list of returnees for Toms River East after averaging 15.6 points a game as a junior. Bailey Englehard and Pat Saunders return to the front court and 6-foot-6 senior newcomer Tim Cook will add size and athleticism to the rotation. Junior guard Phil Lingat – the second leading scorer last season – also returns to the backcourt, along with his older brother Carlos. Toms River South must replace Tymere Berry, who averaged 25 points last season and led the Indians to a 18 win season. Senior Tyler Fall will be asked to be more of a focal point this year after averaging 12 points and seven rebounds a year ago. Senior R.J. Lang also returns to the backcourt and junior Matt Shiffer is the other returnee with experience. Brick must replace its leading scorer and rebounder in Brian Oehme after only winning three games a year ago. Junior guard Noah Buono leads the list of candidates in line for a breakout season along with Joe and Anthony DeStafano and juniors Brandon Williams and Jasir Taylor in the backcourt. Jackson Memorial brings back leading scorer Chris Hawryluk as the only returning starter while senior guard Darius Richards is the lone returning player for Brick Memorial as well. Lacy must replace first-team All-Class A South standout Chris Lapicco and his 23.6 points and 11.5 rebounds. Senior guard and returning starter Robert Biele, George Gartner, Mark Sheppard and Vinnie DellaVola will needed to take the next step for the Lions to do anything this season.
Class B North 1) Colts Neck 2) Neptune 3) Long Branch 4) Red Bank Catholic 5) Red Bank 6) Matawan 7) Ocean 8) Wall COMMENTS: Colts Neck a p p e a r s healthy after being hit hard a year ago by injuries but still need to replace CLASS B NORTH leading scorer Chris O’Reilly. Senior 6-foot-3 guard Lloyd Daniels, senior forward Kyle Gordon and 6-foot-4 senior forward Tom O’Rielly are all back and give the Cougars a trio of high-caliber returnees. Varsity returnees Jordan DeGroot and Khalid Mustafa will play bigger roles after a full year of experience senior Tim Cavrak, junior Brendan Clarke and sophomore Robbie Hill will also be in the rotation. Neptune has some holes to fill from graduation as well as the transfer of 6-foot-5 forward Marque Ellington to Saint John Vianney. However, they did bring in their own transfer in junior forward Jules Calhoun from Middletown North and have junior guard Barry Brown and 6-foot-6 sophomore Jared Kimbrough returning with significant experience. Guards Seth Harrington and Keith Pettaway can both shoot the ball while Dymar Holland and sophomore Jawan Crenshaw are options as well. Long Branch played only one senior in its starting rotation last season but unfortunately two starters transferred after the season. On the plus side, the Green Wave do bring back 6-foot-2 guard Jamar Foster and sophomore guard Tyree Morris to start in the backcourt after showing a ton of promise a year ago. Senior forward Jaquell Presley and Joshawan Boyton each bring size at 6-foot-4 and should help provide senor presence. Sophomore T.J. Fosque is another 6-foot-4 forward and with junior guard Casius Briggs gives added strength to the rotation. Long Branch does have an ace in the hole in senior in senior guard Anthony Velazquez, a transfer from Puerto Rico who has already opened some eyes with his scoring touch. Red Bank Catholic brings back all-around talent Eddie Hahn and sharpshooter Evan Madigan to the starting lineup. The rest of the starting rotation is new but has plenty of minutes on the floor. A pair of big men return in 6-foot-5 senor Liam Smith – who will play football at Duke next season – and 6-foot-6 Mark Caverly to give the Caseys a formidable front court line. Senior Colin Shaughnessy and juniors Terrance Calendrillo, Mike Conley, and Sean Smith are all option in the backcourt. Red Bank returns its top scorer in Shadiq Palmer – who will play football at Syracuse next fall – but must replace the remainder of its offensive production. Bucs quarterback Jack Navitsky saw ample minutes last season at guard and will add experience as well as leadership for the Bucs. Jack Reardon, Ben Sprauer, and Jack Anderson will look to step in as seniors while juniors Chris Outerbridge and Connor McLoone offer options as well. Matawan lost a couple of all-shore guards as well as head coach Tom Stead. Former Monmouth University all-time leading scorer John Giraldo takes over the program to soften the blow of losing Stead. A key piece from last season, Mergim Gyjriqi – fourth leading scorer last season at 7.2 points per game - returns to the starting lineup with senior forward Randy Myers and sharpshooter Pat Hennessy back as well. The sophomore trio of Zaire Jackson, Michael Dunne and Reggie Tawiah are options that have shown good potential. Senior center Scott Bradley and fellow senior Yianni Kavarakas return for Ocean while Wall is looking at a rebuilding year after losing most its scoring.
1) Mater Die 2) Point Beach 3) Ranney 4) St. Rose 5) Asbury Park 6) Keyport 7) Henry Hudson 8) Keansburg COMMENTS: Mater Die could end up as the No.1 team in the CLASS A CENTRAL Shore Conference when it’s all said and done after financial woes closed the doors at Cardinal McCarrick High School and the Seraphs inherited most their roster from a team that went 21-5 along with bringing in McCarrick head coach Ben Gamble – a former assistant under legendary St. Anthony coach Bobby Hurley. Most of Mater Die’s starters will be made up of former McCarrick players and transfers such as: senior NyQuan McCombs who averaged 13 points per games last season, junior guard Elijah Mitchell and seniors Bryan Harris and Josh Green from McCarrick and a trio of players who transferred from Marist High School in senior guard Kyle Elliot, sophomore guard Kenny Jones and Maleek McKnight. Six-foot-7 Elijah Barnes will be playing for his third school in three years transferring from Central after averaging 10.1 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per game in the low post. Sky Cherry was an impact freshman for Mater Dei last season and along with Sean Kruger and Thomas Hannafin will represent last year’s Seraphs. Point Pleasant Beach returns third-team All-Shore guard Jimmy Panzini but must replace first-team All-Class B Central pick Jessi Hill. Senior 6-foot-6 center Alex Mrusek joins Point Beach after transferring from Middletown South where he averaged almost nine points and eight boards. Sophomores Danny Frauenheim, Trevor Covey and Chris Pina look to make an impact while senior Mike Rice returns to the starting lineup as a ball handler and three-point ace. Ranney has a new look as well, bringing in former Red Bank Regional and Maryland star center Tahj Holden as new head coach and will start four impact freshmen with two of them ranked as top 25 players nationally in their class. Scottie Lewis and Bryan Antoine are both already 6-foot-5 with many publications already tabbing Lewis as a potential top-10 recruit for the Class of 2019. The other two freshmen – 6-foot-2 guard Alex Klatsky and 6-foot-6 center Chris Autino – are both advance enough to start on any program in the conference. Returning starter Joe Mahoney – the Panthers leading scorer a year ago – is the fifth starter joining the ‘Fab Four’ freshmen in the lineup. St. Rose must find a replacement for All-Class B Central selection Matt Frost among a group of talented but young players. Sophomore’s Dave Calloway, John Crowley and Jared Scheininger will join a rotation that returns 6-foot-6 senior center J.P. Krotulis, juniors Brendan Hueth and Billy Frost and senior guard Mike Gowen. Asbury Park will get a good amount of production back with the return of junior guard Josmere Taylor, who led the team in scoring as a sophomore. Also back are senior Devon Thompson, junior Xavier Hundley and sophomores Donte Abrams and Ja’King Agostini. Keyport returns four starters including second-team All-Class B Central center Travis Alverez, senior Zach Ochs, junior Chris Hogrefe and sophomore Jay Hansen. The senior guard-forward combination of Tom DeFillipo and Chris Coberg will again carry Henry Hudson with 6-4 forward Matt Going and guards Brendan Carlstrom and Tom Fennell and forwards Ryan Doegler and Amarjit in the rotation as well.
Class A South 1) Lakewood 2) Manchester 3) Donovan Catholic 4) Point Pleasant Boro 5) Pinelands 6) Barnegat 7) Central 8) Jackson Liberty
COMMENTS: Lakewood returns two starters and the first man off the bench from a team that excelled during the regular season but disappointed in post season. Senior Amir Tyler returns as a three-year starter at guard CLASS A SOUTH and 6-foot-5 Sean Barksdale is back at power forward along with 6-foot-6 center Ryzson Barnes who moves into the starting lineup fulltime this season. Junior swingman Adiam Palmer can fit at multiple positons with his 6-foot-4 frame and athleticism, while junior Dorian Vaughn and sophomore Ahmir Burton give the Lakewood depth upfront. Senior Kaseam Wilson and sophomore’s Drayton Bonaparte and Zyheir and Jyheir Jones are all in the guard rotation joining Tyler. Manchester returns four starters and could have its most complete team in recent memory led by the four-year starting guard combo of Jordan Torney and Shavar Reynolds. Both first-team Class B South selections a year ago, Torney and Reynolds could be the top guard combo in the Shore Conference. Also back as a four-year starter is center Israel Almestica to dominate the paint and junior L.J. Robinson on the wing, another good scoring option for the Hawks. Sophomore Khari Jenkins takes over the starting point guard duties, although Reynolds will take over when needed. Junior Alex Lunn returns with ample playing experience with 6-foot-4 forwards Ryan Harnett and Gavin Pabst and Pennsylvania transfer Zion Mununga all expected to get good looks. Senior Mike Boice had a breakout year for Donovan Catholic as a junior in his first year as a starter and look for him to take the next step. Fellow senior Riley Collins is back after scoring 11points per game to go with 5.3 rebounds and seniors Kevin Singleton and Caleb Kearney are all in the backcourt mix while senior forward Tyler McShea and 6-foot-8 center Erik Braaten are the go to guys in the paint. For Point Boro, Matt Van Nostrand brings range and scoring ability and he’ll team in the backcourt with junior point guard John Venturi who has started since his freshman year. Point Boro also returns 6-ffot-5 Jack Wattleton and 6-foot-3 sophomore John Duda, who had a breakout freshman campaign. Pinelands returns two all-division guards from a year ago in leading scorer Dave Lunn and second-leading scorer Luke Stanbaugh to lead the way for the Wildcats. Senior forward Mike Suarez is back in the starting lineup in the frontcourt along with senior Will Jenkins. Barnegat will count on returnees DaShawn Anderson, who averaged better than eight points and eight rebounds and leading scorer Nick Camarato, who averaged 12.6 points a game. Due to graduating seniors and the transfer of arguably their best player and the hiring of a new coach this season looks to be a rebuilding year for Central but they do bring back talented junior Mike Gruszecki as the lone returning starter. Jackson Liberty also has a new coach in Dave Zwirz who also must rebuild with only senior forward Lateef Foster returning.

Toms River North first-team All-Class A South A pick Ashley Tutzauer and Amanda Johnson while Brick Memorial has second-team All-Class A South selection Samantha Biaolablocki back as well as Shaunna Bruker and Emily Dominquez. First-team All-Class A South pick Kaitlin Lister is back for Toms River East and second-team All-Shore guard Daria Jones returns for Jackson Memorial.
COMMENTS: St. Rose won the Non-Public South B title before bowing to Manasquan in CLASS B CENTRAL the Tournament of Champions final. Their two stars off that team are gone, but St. Rose returns a loaded roster with a ton of experience - plus they bring in first-team All-Class B North pick Lucy Thomas as a transfer from Ocean. Back for St. Rose is first-team All-Class B Central selection Liz Marsicano, second-team All-Class B Central pick Ellyn Stoll, returning starter Jen Louro, and Mikayla Markham. Mater Die should be solid once again with Erinne Regan, Shannon Lane, and Sydney Schifano all returning. The Blue Bishops look to be improved and could challenge Mater Die for second with Shavanna Pearsal, Krystina Barnes, Mary Graham, and Kira Wood back. Second-team All-Class B Central pick Steph Walters returns to lead Keansburg with Erin Best, Cheyanne Lyons and Allison Florenzo back as well. Keyport is improved with the return of Sherelle Hill, Makaela Tuccille, Alexis Bennett and Melissa Demaj leading the way.

COMMENTS: Red Bank Catholic had 22 wins a year ago with a team dominated by underclassmen, led by second– team All-Class B North selection Josie Larkins. They did CLASS A NORTH lose All-Shore guard Alex Barazotti but return more than enough to compensate in Haley Moore, Katie Rice, Caitlin Carroll, and Gillian Hansen and others. Neptune won 23 games last year before losing to Middletown South in the CJGIII final a year ago and lost second-team AllShore guard Marajiah Bacon to graduation. But they do return first-team All-Class B North selection Desiree Allen, Briana Love, Alexa Vreeland, and Kaelyn Kimbrough back along with newcomer Rahmena Henderson, who could have a big role as a freshman. Colts Neck lost to Marlboro in the CJGIV semifinals and lose Kaity Healy and Noelle Frost from that team to graduation but bring back Elise Brown, Sam Roth and Cara Volpe who all have starting experience. Long Branch brings back first-team All-Class B North selection Che’Kasha Andrews and Quayniece Page while Matawan returns first-team All-Class B North pick Tracy Brereton, Jennele Long, Adrianna Fletcher and Briyannah Richardson.

Donovan Catholic won 19 games a year ago and are favorites to win the division again with Katie Borghesi, Molly Collins, Alyss HirCLASS A SOUTH chy, Meg Loughery, and Danielle Goble all back in the fold for another run. Collins was named to the Class B South second team as a freshman last season after a stellar season. First-team Class-B South selections Anissa Fucci and Lyric Green are back for their senior season for Manchester and after winning 15 games a year ago, including a first-round win in the state playoffs. MANASQUAN GIRLS HOPE TO PICK UP WHERE LAST YEARS CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM LEFT OFF By Mike Ready
MANASQUAN – The Manasquan girls basketball team has an incredibly hard act to follow after last year’s team – led by McDonalds All-American and Gatorade’s New Jersey Player of the Year Marina Mabrey – won every possible title availed to them, beginning with the Class A Central title and closing out their remarkable season with a win over Saint Rose in the Tournament of Champions as the No.1 team in the state and the ninth-ranked team in the nation.
the future. We all have each other’s backs and are on the same page and if we work together nothing can really stop us.” Junior Addie Masonius and sophomore Carly Geissler – a skilled shooter - step into starting roles as the third and fourth guards this season after gaining considerable playing experience last season in reserve roles. Besides regular season play, Masonius recorded valuable minutes throughout the playoffs, including the Tournament of Champions final.
In addition to filling the gaping hole left by Mabrey’s graduation, there are other question marks surrounding Manasquan entering the 2015-16 season that need to be addressed.
Geissler saw action in 18 games last season averaging one point, rebound and assist per game while Masonius took the floor in all 34 games last season when she averaged 2.5 points, two rebounds and one assist per game.
The Warriors must replace first-team Class A Central selection Courtney Hagaman’s 10 points per game average and on-court senior leadership. And as if the loss of Mabrey and Hagaman isn’t enough, Manasquan was dealt an awful blow to their season’s chances when 6-foot-1 starting center/forward Victoria Galvan and projected starting guard Gilliam Black were both lost for the season with ACL injuries.
Freshman Faith Masonius – a 6-foot-1 forward and Addie’s younger sister – is the fifth starter and will add length to the lineup in the front court. She’s highly regarded and considered one if not the top freshman in this year’s class.
Galvan – also a standout softball pitcher - was a force in the paint last season for the Warriors, averaging 7.5 points and five rebounds a game. Black was the first player off the bench logging valuable minutes for the Warriors while averaging 3.5 points a game. Losing Galvan’s physical presence and Black’s big-game experience is an obstacle the Warriors will have to rise above if they plan on following in the footsteps of last season’s championship team.
This should prove to be a very fast lineup with the ball movement in this four-guard rotation very difficult to defend against and hard to keep up with. It has the potential to cause major problems for teams not equipped to handle their speed. Five-foot-9 sophomore’s Emma McMenaman and Maggie Kelly and 5-foot-7 junior Jackie Kurtz will also provide size to the lineup and will be the first three players off the bench for the Warriors. Kelly and McMenaman saw playing time in 15 games last season while Kurtz played in 28 games averaging 1.6 points, 1.5 rebounds and one assist per game.
“Losing Victoria and Gillian has changed our rotation a little bit and our game plan,” head coach Lisa Kukoda said. “But luckily we have a lot of girls back who have the experience of playing in big games and hopefully that will benefit us this year. We do have some younger girls and they’re excited to step into some spots and I think they’re ready for the challenge. I think they’ve definitely shown they can play at the level we established last year.”
Entering the season as defending champions, Manasquan will also have to deal with the fact they have targets painted on their backs and they are now the hunted.
Manasquan does brings back two starting guards in their four-guard system including junior third-team All-Shore point guard Stella Clark and Mabrey’s younger sister Dara, who started as a freshman last season alongside her older sister.
After playing her way into the starting lineup midway through last season, Mabrey showed outstanding floor vision with the ability hit the long shot from anywhere on the court as well as finding her way inside to the basket when needed.
Clark, a 5-foot-3 ball of fire, plays way bigger than her size and is a defensive wiz. Her 61 steals last season – second to Mabrey’s 71 led to countless fast-break baskets and open shots all over the floor. She averaged 6.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists last season and you can expect those numbers to go way up this season.
Following a stellar first season that saw her average 8.3 points a game, Mabrey will be counted on to fill a good portion of the scoring void left by her sister. And if her tremendous all-around preseason play is any indication of whether she’s up to the challenge, it certainly appears she is.
“It’s going to be a building year for sure,” Clark said. “But along with that we’re definitely coming out to try to win every game and play the best we can, there’s no doubt about that.”
“There are a lot of roles that are being filled from last year and two injuries,” Mabrey said. “So basically it’s going to be a really completive and tough year, but it’s going to make us so much stronger for
“I tell the girls all the time that it doesn’t matter if you were part of the team last year or stepped on the court last year you’re still wearing Manasquan and everybody’s going to bring their best game against you,” Kukoda said. “So, we have to be prepared for that, we have to be mentally tough for that, and that’s going to be a big part of how we do this season.” “Being a target is like a lot of mentality, it’s all in your head,” Clark said. “As long as we’re keeping our cool and playing together is all that really matters.” “I really think we have a lot of potential to be one of those top teams again,” Kukoda added. “It’s a little bit of putting it all together for us this year. If we’re able to do that and if we’re able to execute what we need to in our game plan I think this team can hang with anybody.”

points scored at 179. A rebound machine, Marsicano scooped up 203 off the backboard, which helped her rack up 66 shots in the paint. 33 free throws also added points to St. Rose’s column in many of their wins. Junior Jennifer Louro also makes her return after scoring 157 points last season which included 49 field goals and 10 three pointers last season. 51 assists and 36 steals contributed to the team’s success on the court. Jennifer will be filling the role of her sister Jess, who took much of the heavy lifting last season. Jess finished last season in her high school career with 542 points scored overall and 293 rebounds.
niors who left last year and ensure that the girls who take their place shine. They’ll have plenty of opportunities to shine in their upcoming schedule, with their opening against Ranney, then on to Franklin and Point Pleasant Beach before the break. After the break they’ll face Lenape, Asbury Park and Henry Hudson. If this team lives up to the hype and their past performance, they should fare very well in the early half of the schedule.
Junior Ellyn Stoll will also be a big contributor on the court this year with 174 points scored in the last season, 100 assists, and a returning team high of 35 three pointers from beyond the arch.
Saint Rose was a force to be reckoned with going into the 2015-2016 season. Coming off their 32-2 season last year, Saint Rose earned a spot in the Tournament of Champions Final, where they faced off against Manasquan. Although coming up short against the Lady Warriors of Manasquan, St.

Experienced Colts Look to Keep CBA on the Map in 2015 by: Ella Brockway
Replacing the gap left by Laffey and guard Shaun Belbey, who are at Adelphi (NY) and Syracuse respectively, will not be easy. But seniors Sam Houston and Jack Boyan, and sophomore Robert Mahala will look to contribute to the McGuire-and-Andree-centered offense. The Colts will see their biggest threat in Class A North play come from Marlboro, who added six-foot-eight CBA transfer Matt Dean in the offseason. CBA finished with a 24-6 overall record, and a 13-1 finish in divisional play that led to a first place finish in the A North. The biggest struggle in conference play that the Colts faced last year came in the Shore Conference Tournament final, which they lost 50-24 to the Brendan Barry-led Rumson-Fair Haven Bulldogs. It won’t be surprising to see these two teams again during tournament time, as the Colts look for their first SCT Final win last season brought the Colts all the way to both the state and conference final will return. That lineup includes senior Lehigh commit Pat Andree, who is a returning first-team All-Shore selection and arguably one of the best players in the

The Colts will next take on Freehold Boro on Monday, December 21 at home, followed by two games in the Skyline Classic in Jersey City against Iona Prep on December 27 and Trenton on December 29.

CBA also returns seniors Jack McGuire and John Salcedo to their starting lineup. McGuire scored 18 in the win against Freehold Township, and like Andree, is a tall (six-foot-seven) and powerful distance shooter who averaged 11.3 points per game last season. Point guard John Salcedo rounds out the returning starters for the Colts, and after a 65-point season last winter, is ready to provide the same kind of consistent play on both sides of the ball that he showed in his junior season.
schedule right now, that will be a fun one to look for come February.
Pat Andree
Andree scored 28 points in CBA’s season opener on December 18th to lead the Colts to a 57-43 win over Freehold Township. With 64 made three pointers last year, Andree is also one of the Shore’s best distance shooters, and that skill will play a big role in the Colts’ success this year.
their performance in those games will be a big indicator of how they’ll play once the Non-Public A tournament comes around. There’s a big chance that CBA will face the Seraphs of Mater Dei Prep, who are also predicted to be one of the top teams in the Shore Conference, somewhere down the line, and with no matchups between the two teams on the

Now, it’s up to the 2015-16 Colts to make sure they won’t be leaving that map anytime soon. After a season-ending loss to Pope John XXIII in the Non-Public A Final this past March, now-graduated Jack Laffey said that he was proud of the way that the 2014-15 Christian Brothers Academy Colts put CBA “back on the map in the state.”
