SportsCare Physical Therapy Offers Pediatric Services

Freehold Township Prepares For States Despite Handchen Cup Upset By Michael Ward

FREEHOLD – Going into the Handchen Cup as the second best seed, the Patriots thought they were in for a little more action during the tournament than they ended up seeing. In a matchup with currently 9-11-3 Howell, all that was required of Freehold Township was to put away the Rebels in a clean victory to cruise toward a matchup with Southern and then a likely finals faceoff with Middletown South, but a hat trick by Howell’s Ryan Damelio but an end to any of those hopes in the second period. SportsCare Physical Therapy is proud to now offer Pediatric Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy. Our multi-disciplinary team of pediatric therapists works together to collaborate with families and other medical, developmental and educational specialists to offer the best care possible to our clients. At SportsCare, therapists and families work together to improve a child’s functional independence, enhance learning opportunities, facilitate motor development and optimize functional communication within everyday life. We treat children from birth to 21 years of age. We treat a wide range of diagnosis from orthopedic/ sports injuries to developmental delays. SportsCare is located on Route 70 on the boarder of Brick and Lakewood, convenient to the parkway. Pediatric Occupational Therapy Pediatric occupational therapy at SportsCare focuses on improving development of fine motor skills, visual motor and visual perceptual skills, activities of daily living, social skills, strength, and sensorimotor skills. Our OTs work closely with families to assist children with disabilities to improve function, independence, and thrive within family routines. Our services utilize sensory integration techniques to assist children with sensory processing disorders and Autism Spectrum disorders of all ages. We also use therapeutic tools such as sensorimotor equipment, Handwriting Without Tears programs, Therapeutic Brushing Protocols, Therapeutic Listening, among others.

Pediatric Physical Therapy Pediatric physical therapy at SportsCare helps improve a child's mobility, strength, balance, endurance, motor coordination as well as gross motor skills. Our PTs promote health and fitness throughout the lifespan while improving activity in everyday routines. Our PT specializes in treatment of torticollis and developmental delays in infancy.

With Freehold Township down by two heading into the third period, a quick score by Freehold’s Max Halvorsen wasn’t enough to bring Freehold up to a tie, and they were defeated, 3-2. With a final regular season game against Brick Memorial now in their sights, the Patriots will look to regroup and build toward a successful finish in the state finals.

Pediatric Speech Therapy Services and Feeding Therapy Pediatric speech therapy at SportsCare helps children maximize their functional communication, learning, and/or feeding skills. Our services help children who are experiencing delays in developing speech, mispronunciation of sounds, poor social skills, or difficulty in home or at school with reading, writing, or understanding others. We use a special method of treatment called the Sequential Oral Sensory Approach to Feeding (or "SOS Feeding") to address feeding disorders. We also offer PROMPT therapy to address communication skills for children with a vast of array of speechlanguage disorders. Our SLPs treat children with medical or developmental issues that impact eating or communication, and can rehabilitate children who have experienced an injury or illness to help them reach their highest potential.

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP’S #27 ALESSANDRO MANCUOS Currently standing at 15-4-1, including their first-round elimination in the Handchen Cup, the Freehold Patriots are still a dangerous team on the ice and stand undefeated in divisional play so far this season. As the state brackets are poised to be released, Freehold will rely heavily on offensive players like Halvorsen, who’s scored 45 goals this season, as well as Brendan Liebross and Julian Kislin, who’ve racked up 28 and 21 goals, respectively. In the net for the Patriots for most of the action has been senior Nick Raiola, who’s had to fend off 364 shots against and has only allowed 52 goals, which equates to an 88% save percentage. Sophomore Michael Ottone has been solid as a backup seeing 81 shots against and only allowing 10 goals.

Overall Freehold has been a solid example of one of the best hockey teams in the region who win big against teams that can’t keep up and lose just narrowly to teams who put games just out of reach. The Patriots will easily be one of the top teams to watch going into state finals.

SOUTHERN REGIONAL CONTINUES FIGHT FOR HANDCHEN CUP

Crimson Knights Advance To Dowd Cup Semi-Finals

By Michael Ward

MANAHAWKIN – Southern Regional’s presence in the Shore A Central division has been a big one this season. The 16-6-1 team from Manahawkin has consistently put away opponents on the ice and is still in the running for the Handchen Cup along with Howell, Middletown South and Jackson Memorial.

By Michael Ward

After cruising to victory against Red Bank Catholic in the first round of the Dowd Cup Tournament by a margin of 8-2, the Crimson Knights of Wall Township are on their way to the semi-finals of the Dowd Cup.

WALL’S #12 KYLE O’NEIL

Waiting for them there will be sixth-seeded Point Pleasant Boro, who defeated St. Rose earlier this month to advance. If Wall succeeds in overcoming Point Boro, they are strongly favored to face second-seeded Saint John Vianney unless seventh-seed Middletown manages an upset.

Not many teams, for instance, can say that they lost to Morris Knolls by only one point, or that they tied Saint John Vianney earlier in the season, but Wall keeps finding ways to battle back in key games and situations.

Overall, it’s been a strong year for Wall, who comes in with a record of 12-6-2.

The Crimson Knights will face Point Pleasant Boro at 8pm at home on February 14.

The Crimson Knights have been boosted on offense by the efforts of Shane Haviland, Ryan Burns and Larry Hooper, who’ve racked up 24, 20 and 10 goals, respectively, this season.

Southern Regional will make it tough for Howell going into the matchup however, as they’re one of the best scoring teams in the Shore Conference and can hold back opposing teams with a shutdown defense. Southern’s offensive strength comes in the sheer number of players who can land a decisive goal. While their highest scoring player, David Lytle, can only claim a total of 19 goals on the season, an unprecedented six players on the team have doubledigit goal numbers.

Logan Beattie has been performing well as Wall’s goalie this season, taking 439 shot attempts and providing saves 91.3% of the time. Luke Capro has been a valiant alternative, boasting an 87.1% save percentage on 62 shot attempts. Even though Wall has fewer wins than some of the other top teams in the Shore Conference this year, the Crimson Knights have battled better than most against some of the toughest teams in the state.

After winning the first round of the cup tournament against Manalapan earlier this month, Southern will go on to play 13th-seeded Howell on February 14. Most would write off Howell’s advancement into the semi-final round as a one-off as they narrowly skated past Freehold Township, but there’s no guarantee that such an upset couldn’t happen again.

Hunter Bello, Jack Conrad and Trent Markley all can take credit for 14 goals each this season, while Nicholas Englebert and Paul Keyes each have 11 through early February. Junior Cameron Conrad has been near-magnetic with the puck in goal this season, as he’s stood against 366 shots against and only al-

WALL’S #28 JACK TEXTOR

SOUTHERN REGIONAL’S #14 lowed 30 goals. Those numbers equate to close to a 92% save percentage, far better than league average. Anthony Scalvino has served well as backup goalie throughout the season blocking 74 of the 83 shots made against him. Jack Conrad has even seen time as a goalie and showed his versatility by saving 11 of 14 total shots against. Moving forward toward the conclusion of the Handchen Cup, if Southern cruises past Howell, they’ll likely face Middletown South, currently one of the most successful teams in the Shore Conference, during the championship round.

BOYS’ HOOPS UPDATE:

Page 7

Mater Dei Tops Ranney and More By Ted Kaiser

JERSEY SHORE — There have been several interesting storylines in the first half of the Shore Conference boys’ basketball season. At the top, the power struggle between Ranney School and Mater Dei Prep has dominated the headlines in the fight for the No. 1 seed in the Shore Conference Tournament. Freehold Township was working on an undefeated season entering late January. Toms River North shook off a December loss to the Patriots building in hopes of reaching the 20win mark last week. Rumson-Fair Haven also pushed for 20 wins and upstart Marlboro was set to face a stiff challenge on Friday. Meanwhile, young CBA and Neptune started to gain momentum after some difficult stretches. First, the battle for top seed in the Shore Conference Tournament appeared to take a turn toward Mater Dei Prep last week. The Seraphs went into Ranney’s gym

and returned the favor for an earlier home loss with a 76-72 win. Elijah Barnes scored 21 points to show that the defending SCT champs have no plans to go quietly in 2017. Mater Dei’s win also means that the Class B Central Division crown could very well end up shared between the two schools. Freehold Township was 16-0 until meeting CBA on January 27. The Colts, with a relatively youthful roster, have taken some lumps that are rather unfamiliar to CBA basketball teams over the years. But on that day, the young Colts rose up to stun the Patriots, 63-58, for their first loss. Liam Kennedy and Stephen Braunstein each had 16 points for CBA. Freehold Township did bounce back for wins over Colts Neck and Howell before edging out a pair of nail-biting one-point victories against Marlboro and Manalapan in backto-back to games to move to 20-1 on the season. Senior Bobby Weise scored 18 points to lead the Patriots over the Braves. Ryan Cardone hit a jumper at the buzzer to win it. TR North has reeled off 16 straight wins heading into last weekend since losing in December to Freehold Township. The Mariners have dominated the Class A South Division including double-digit victories over Central Regional, a top 10 caliber team. In their latest win over Central last week,

senior Jaden Rhoden poured in 22 points, Travis Hollond added 14, and junior guard Holden Petrick chipped in with 13 points. RFH closed in on 20 wins as they earned number 19 on Friday night with a 58-44 victory over Saint John Vianney. They finished a perfect 12-0 to claim first place in the Class A Central Division. Ian O’Connor, Tyler Pierson, and Jack Solano each scored 12 points in the balanced effort. Also last Friday, Marlboro moved to 14-5 with a 54-52 doubleovertime win against the rapidly improving CBA Colts. Neptune fell to Colts Neck, 72-46. The Cougars earned their 12th win to equal Neptune’s total. The Scarlet Fliers started 1-3 this season, but have battled back with an impressive win over Marlboro and an earlier victory versus Colts Neck.

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ACADEMY CLAIMS NO. 1 SPOT IN NEW JERSEY BOYS’ HOCKEY RANKINGS By Mike Ready

LINCROFT – In last Monday’s matchup between then No. 1 Delbarton and No. 3 Christian Brothers Academy, senior forward Derek Contessa scored three goals and the Colts made his hat trick hold up as they went on to beat Delbarton, 3-1, handing the Green Wave its first loss of the season.

By Michael Ward

BAYVILLE – The Golden Eagles have been cruising on the ice this season, compiling a 14-6-1 record through the regular season and their entry into the Dowd Cup.

The win catapulted CBA (14-3-4) to the No. 1 ranking in the most recent NJ.com Top 20 poll and pushed the Colts’ unbeaten streak to nine games in the process.

Despite falling to Saint John Vianney in the first round of the 2017 Dowd Cup Tournament, Central Regional has all the tools to become a serious contender in the state tournament which will be seeded in mid-February.

CBA and Delbarton know each other well as both are members of the Gordon Conference and have faced each other in many memorable postseason skirmishes. Last season the third-seeded Colts beat No. 1 seed Delbarton, 3-1, to take home Gordon Cup championship. Then as fate would have it, the two schools met again in the NJSIAA Non-Public final with the Green Wave returning the favor and downing the Colts, 3-1, for the Non-Public title. In 2015, third-seeded CBA again pulled the upset beating No. 1 seed Delbarton, 4-3, in an overtime thriller that saw the Colts come all the way back from a 3-0 deficit with 5:01 remaining in the second period. Contessa tied the score with 2:47 left in the game before Chris Hayes buried a shot in the back of the net for the game-winner just 3:48 into the extra period handing the Colts their seventh state title in program history. The way the Colts have been skating they would like nothing more than to add an eighth state title to its resume and entering the playoffs they may just be the favorites to do so. In 10 games for the Colts, Contessa has scored eight goals and assisted on nine others for 17 points after being named third-team All-Shore a year ago when

CENTRAL REGION TOP TIER SEASO

CBA’S #29 JAKE BROWN he tallied 19 goals with 14 assists for 33 points. Junior forward Dean DiFazio leads the Colts with 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points and is having a breakout junior season after scoring one goal with eight assists last year. Senior forward Corey Clifton is having another solid campaign for the Colts and in just nine games has scored nine goals with eight assists after netting 15 goals and assisting on 15 others last season. Another senior forward CBA counts on is John D’Aniello who’s already matched his goals total from a year ago with nine goals while assisting on five others for 14 points.

Leading the charge on offense for Central has been Michael Mania, a senior who’s scored 49 goals so far this season. Mania also recently eclipsed the 200-point mark in his hockey career. Rounding out the big three on offense are seniors Dale Schweighardt with 31 goals and Travis Grady with 18.

The key offense that the trio has provided has given the Golden Eagles decisive wins over teams such as Red Bank Regional and Lacey, who they defeated in identical 10-0 final scores. The team’s highlight of the season came when Central faced Toms River East on February 1, and left the arena that night with a 21-1 victory.

This season, skating without a true superstar in its lineup, the Colts are spreading the scoring out while getting the same production and it’s paying off huge dividends. Senior forwards John Cernero (5g, 7a) and Nic Dietrich (3g, 12a), junior forwards Nic Lidondici (7g, 7a) and Liam Noonan (6g, 3a) and freshman forward Kyle Contessa (5g, 7a) have all contributed mightily to this season’s success. Behind the blue line, senior defensemen Will Egbert (5g, 8a) and Sam Weber (2g, 4a), junior Blake Vastola (2a) and freshmen defenders Chad Schneider (5a) and Will Hilfiker (3g, 1a) have allowed just 24 goals in 21 games so far this season . This is a unit that had to replace one if not the best, defensive players in the history of the program, Ryan Bogan, Jr. The Colts have relied on a two-goalie system this season after graduating firstteam All-Shore goalie Michael Cennero last spring. Junior transfer Brendan Behan has allowed eight goals on 119 shots for a 0.933 goals against average while sophomore netminder Jake Brown has let in 15 goals on 159 shots for a 0.893 goals against average.

CBA’S #2 CHAD SCHNEIDER Photos by Tom Smith

CBA opened its Gordon Cup title defense Monday, February 13 against St. Augustine, who they lost to, 4-1, earlier in the year then came away with a 2-2 tie January 25 on a late controversial goal by St. Augustine that tied the score. The Gordon Cup final is February 17; then the NJSIAA Non-Public Tournament begins February 20 with the final tentatively scheduled for March 6.

MIDDLETOWN – The Eagles hope to carry their success in the regular season into the postseason with its sights set on their first Handchen Cup championship since it shared the title with Brick in 2012 and won backto-back titles in 2009-10. Ranked second in the Shore Conference and 13th in the state in the most recent NJ.com Top 20 boys’ hockey poll, Middletown South looks to have enough overall talent to make a long run in the NJSIAA Public B Tournament and better yet, win the program’s first-ever state title in hockey.

TRAL REGIONAL’S #17 JONAS MUELLER Time and time again Central Regional has shown that their offensive unit can be dangerous when they’re working at full capacity, but the defense has also been equally important to a team that could easily make a run for the state championship.

The Eagles’ (16-3-1, 6-1) only Shore Conference losses this season were a 3-0 loss to Christian Brothers Academy, who is ranked No. 1 both in the Shore as well as the state, and a 5-2 loss to No. 6 Wall. They’ve recorded quality Shore Conference wins against No. 9 Jackson Memorial, No. 8 Pt. Boro, No. 7 Southern, No. 4 Saint John Vianney and No. 5 Middletown North. Out of conference, the Eagles have quality wins versus Hunterdon Central – ranked No. 2 in the Skyland Conference, Montgomery – ranked No. 6 in the Skyland Conference, Livingston – ranked No. 2 in the NJIIHL, a tie with Kinnelon – ranked No. 9 in Morris County, and a loss to Bridgewater-Raritan – ranked third in the Skyland Conference.

As Central’s main goalie, senior Riley Jakubczak has seen 520 shots against throughout the season and has a save percentage of roughly 89%. Junior Thomas Kampf has also seen action as goalie, seeing 67 shots against and only allowing five goals, making a save percentage of better than 92%.

Following its 5-2 loss to Wall on January 25, the Eagles have reeled off three straight wins scoring 19 goals in the process while allowing just five. During the three-game span, 10 different Eagle skaters scored goals with senior forwards Ryan D’Emilia (3g), Dan Berkowitz (2g) and Gavin Gulash (2g), junior forwards Deven Ralph (3g) and Nick Lioudakis (3g) and junior defenseman Mike Raccioppi (2g) all scoring multiple times for Middletown South. On the year, the Eagles boast five double-digit goal scorers led by D’Emilia with 17 goals and 16 assists, Gulash with 15 goals and 15 assists, Lioudakis with 14 goals and 12 assists, Ryan Lambert with 13 goals and 21 assists (team lead), and Ralph with 11 goals and 14 assists. D’Emilia, Gulash and Lambert are seniors while Lioudakis and Ralph are juniors. Racioppi is second on the team with 20 assists to go with his six goals, and Berkowitz has assisted on 12 goals and has scored five. Behind the blue line, Middletown South benefits from a solid group of defensemen including seniors Chris Falzone (1g, 2a), Greg Johnson (1g, 5a) and Travis Yawger (2g, 5a) and four juniors including Racioppi, Dakota Yannibelli (1g, 1a), Joe Guerico (1g, 5a) and Robert Matthews (2g, 3a).

Throughout the season, the Golden Eagles have been able to secure big point advantages over many of their less tested opponents. The main challenge for the team going forward, as has seemingly been thus far, is facing other teams of a similar caliber.

Sophomore Clay Simonsen has been outstanding in goal turning away 291 shots on goal with a 0.901 save percentage.

In matchups against teams like Freehold Township, Jackson Liberty and Southern Regional, Central tends to keep things close for a while but gives way to testier offensive units. Regardless of who Central Regional may face first in the upcoming state tournament, they could have a few surprises up their sleeves to make it farther than some would originally think.

UPDATE: No. 1 seed Middletown South beat 16th-seeded Brick Memorial, 6-1, Friday night in the first round of the Handchen Cup at Middletown Ice World. Ralph scored twice while Berkowitz and Craig Bahrs each had a goal and an assist and Lioudakis and Yawger chipped in with a goal apiece. Simonsen was outstanding between the pipes making 24 saves in the win.

MIDDLETOWN SOUTH’S #14 RYAN D’EMILIA

The Eagles will now face eighth-seeded Jackson Memorial, a 3-2 winner over ninth-seed Rumson-Fair Haven, Tuesday night in the semifinals.

SAINT JOHN VIANNEY HOPING HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF AS POSTSEASON PLAY COMMENCES By Mike Ready

HOLMDEL – In 2011, Saint John Vianney went 7-16-1 and was eliminated from the Handchen Cup in the first round while failing to make the cut in the state playoffs. Two years later in 2013, the Lancers posted a 19-2-3 record and beat St. Rose, 4-1, in the Handchen Cup final for the program’s first and only Handchen Cup championship. Then in 2014, the Lancers went a dismal 6-11-2 and failed to qualify for either the inaugural and now defunct Shore Conference Tournament or the state playoffs. But the 2015 team went on to post a 16-6-2 record and made it all the way to the Shore Conference Tournament final before losing to twotime champion Red Bank Catholic in the championship game. Last season Saint John Vianney finished with a disappointing 5-12-2 record and failed to make a postseason appearance. However, once again the Lancers have rebounded from a forgettable season with a solid 9-6-4 record so far this year and are currently ranked No. 4 in the Shore Conference. Sound familiar? The Lancers’ reversal of fortune – postseason edition – commenced Friday

Dom Troisi’s first career goal, as the Lancers scored three first period goals and never looked back. James O’Keefe logged his 10th of the year and assisted on two more goals by Brett Schneider and Kevyn Rigatti, while John Galatt and David Parker rounded out the Saint John Vianney scoring with their 14th and second goals of the season, respectively. Saint John Vianney’s sophomore goalie Jeremy Connor turned away 21 of 23 shots in the win while Max Allen and Joe Zani each dished out two assists.

SJV’S #19 DAVID PARKER Photos by Tom Smith night as second-seeded Saint John Vianney easily handled 15th-seeded Central (14-6-1) and the state’s leading scorer, Michael Mania, 8-2, at the Jersey Shore Arena in Wall. They’ll now meet seventh-seeded Middletown North (105-4) – ranked right behind the Lancers at No. 4 – in the Dowd Cup semifinals Tuesday. Seven skaters scored goals for the Lancers, led by senior forward Ty Buckley who scored twice and assisted on freshman

SJV’S GOALIE #30 JEREMY CONNOR

Mania did pick up his state-leading 49th goal of the season on a power play at 10:13 of the third period to make it 6-1, but the Lancers defense held the Golden Eagles scoreless for the next nine minutes with Parker’s goal mixed in as the game’s outcome was never in doubt. Galett leads the team in goals (14), assists (16) and points (30), while O’Keefe has logged 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points – second on the team. Mike Franzoni (7g, 11a), Matt Franzoni (7g, 9a), Rigatti (8g, 5a) and Schneider (6g, 6a) are all in double-digits in points scored.

CBA and Southern Regional Add Additional SCT Track Championships To Their Reigns By Michael Ward Christian Brothers Academy continued its dominance in the Shore Conference, securing its seventh consecutive conference championship with 72 team points. The Colts took gold medals in two events – the 55m hurdles and 4x400m relay. Tim Jacoutot's 7.57 run in the 55m hurdles secured the event victory while the quartet of Christian Berger, Nick Ebert, Andrew Canale and Rafael Coppola ran a 3:33.39 and edged out the second-place winner by 0.30 seconds. Meanwhile in girls track, Southern added another Shore Conference trophy to its case, winning the third straight conference title and eight in 10 seasons with 47.5 team points. Southern beat out Middletown North, which scored 42 points and outlasted Saint John Vianney (34) and Red Bank Catholic (32). Taylor Mulch was the only Southern athlete to take home a gold medal

thanks to her 2:19.73 time in the 800m run. Mulch also placed second in the 1600m race and was a member of the 4x400m relay team that finished third. Wall’s Niamh Hayes led the field in event victories with two. Hayes, a senior, won both the 1600m and 3200m races with times of 5:05.75 and 10:58.34, respectively. Donovan Catholic’s Alyssa Wilson broke her own Shore Conference record, set at last season's meet, in the shot put. Her throw of 54-8 topped last season's high mark of 52-6.5.

HOWELL BEATS RARITAN FOR SCT TITLE; THREE SHORE TEAMS WIN SECTIONAL TITLES By Mike Ready

WEST LONG BRANCH – Top-ranked and top-seeded Howell brought home its second Shore Conference Tournament title in program history on Saturday, January 28 with a 36-24 victory over second-seeded Raritan at Jackson Liberty High School. Freshman sensation Luke Rada (24-5) – Howell’s 113-pounder – set the tone of the night beating previously-unbeaten Charles Barrale (22-1) in the night’s first match by a score of 5-3. Rada’s win put Raritan (26-2) – making its first appearance in a SCT championship match – in a hole with Rebels standouts Darby Diedrich and Kyle Slendorn coming up at 120 and 126. As expected, Diedrich followed with a pin and Slendorn defeated A.J. Erven, 10-4, and the Rebels went on to win eight bouts and secured bonus points in five of those wins to pull away from the Rockets. Senior Eric Keosseian clinched the championship when he won by a fall over Ethan Wolf at 220 pounds in the third to last bout. Sophomore Darby Diedrich at 120 and senior heavyweight Jake Nash also won by fall, while sophomore Xavier Kelly won by a technical fall at 145 and freshman Shane Reitsma scored a major decision at 182.

Howell is ranked ninth in the state and No. 1 in the Shore, while Raritan is ranked 11th in the state and No. 2 in the Shore Conference. As of Saturday, eight Shore Conference wrestlers remained undefeated: Lacy’s 106-pound sophomore Hunter Gutierrez (29-0), Brick Memorial’s 138-pound senior Gianni Ghione (27-0), Toms River South’s 145-pound junior Cole Corrigan (24-0), Toms River East’s 160-pound senior A.J. Meyers (18-0), Shore Regional’s 160-pound senior Austin Cannon (24-0), Howell’s 170-pound freshman Shane Reitsma (30-0), Wall’s 195-pound senior Matt McKenzie (26-0), Donovan Catholic’s 138-pound junior Cristiaan Dailey (23-0) and Brick Memorial’s 285-pound senior Nick Rivera (27-0). With only one loss on the season: CBA’s 113-pound senior Rich Koehler (31-1), Colts Neck’s 113-pound junior Joe King (27-1), Howell’s 126-pound pound junior Kyle Slendorn (30-1), Raritan’s 132-pound junior Russell Benson (30-1), Ocean’s 138-pound junior Jake Benner (28-1), Wall’s 152-pound sophomore Robert Kanniard (271), Matawan’s 170-pound senior Derrick Wiley (26-1), Freehold’s 106-pound freshman Nico Messina (25-1), Raritan’s 113-pound sophomore Charles Barrale (23-1), Matawan’s 120-pound junior Jaleel Gopaul (22-1), Ocean’s 126-poound freshman Alex Poniros (28-1), Pinelands’ 182-pound senior Chris Nielsen (24-1), Pt. Beach’s 182-pound senior Jack Baker (27-1), Rumson’s 195-pound senior Theo Addison (25-1), Neptune’s 195-pound senior Nick Faber (18-1), Matawan’s 195-pound senior Andrew Conzo (26-1), Keansburg’s 285-pound sophomore Paul Liseno (24-1), Pt. Beach’s 182-pound senior Jack Baker (27-1) and Brick’s 182-pound senior Dean Helstowski (22-1). Wall’s Matt McKenzie scored a technical fall victory in the 195-pound weight class in a dual meet against Manalapan February 2 for his 130th win of his high school career which moved him past Brett Donner (class of 2016) as Wall’s all-time career leader in wins. Howell’s Slendorn – only a junior – joined the 100-career-win club this past week and is on pace to make a run at the program’s alltime record of 138 held by Zac Cunliffe. Middletown North – ranked 17th in the state and third in Shore Conference – crossed the 20-win threshold for the first time program history while Holmdel tied the program record for wins in a season with 18 and Manalapan has broken the program record for wins in a season with 23… and counting.

Jackson Memorial Advances to Semis in Handchen Cup Tournament By Michael Ward

It couldn’t have been any closer. Jackson Memorial found themselves behind, 2-0, come the close of the second period against Rumson-Fair Haven. The Bulldogs managed to tack on a goal in each of the first two periods and seemingly had Jackson against the ropes. But in the third period, Jackson Memorial’s offense awoke, striking with a goal by Joseph Jablonski and two goals by Nick Swain to put Jackson Memorial over the top and into the semi-finals.

JACKSON MEMORIAL’S #42 Photos by Tom Smith

The win will bring Jackson Memorial head to head with firstseeded Middletown South as the Jaguars attempt to string together what would be two upsets in a row to secure the Handchen Cup. The Jaguars, who’ve been performing well this season, currently possess a 13-5-1 record overall and

a 4-2-1 record within their division. As the state tournament closes in, Jackson will have to focus on beefing up their scoring while further solidifying their strong defense to make a serious play at a state championship. Leading the scoring for the Jaguars this season has been Trevor Cear, who’s racked up 14 goals on the ice this season. Joseph and Cody Jablonski both make appearances in the top three list with eleven and eight goals scored, respectively. Goalie Matt Pousson has been effective in the net, facing 295 shots against throughout the season and saving close to 90 percent. While seeding and schedules are yet to be released for the upcoming state tournament, Jackson Memorial will play at Middletown South on February 14 at 5pm.

Mater Dei Prep Appoints Director of Lacrosse Operations MIDDLETOWN – This spring Mater Dei Prep (MDP) will introduce lacrosse to its athletic program for the first time in school history. In anticipation, Andrew Eastwood of Sea Bright has been named director of lacrosse operations for the school.

“We are so excited to add Andy Eastwood to our staff,” said MDP interim athletic director Lance Bennett. “He will play a pivotal role in developing both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse programs.”

In addition to his duties as director, Eastwood will also act as the boys’ lacrosse coach. A search is currently underway for a girls’ coach.

For spring 2017, Mater Dei Prep looks to field a junior varsity team for both boys and girls. This first season is a “total unknown,” said Eastwood, who is hoping to schedule eight to 10 games for the upcoming season. Current MDP athletes will be encouraged to try out for the teams. According to Eastwood, “Lacrosse is similar to basketball and soccer. It’s about playing the angles and moving your feet and having good hand-eye coordination.”

Eastwood has known MDP football coach Dino Mangiero for years and had been talking to him about the great strides the school has made since they privatized in 2015. When the opportunity arose to help the school through a sport he loves, Eastwood jumped at the chance. For him, the director job is an opportunity to start a “new chapter” for MDP and “present another reason for kids to attend a great school.” Formerly the boys’ varsity lacrosse coach at Rumson-Fair Haven High School (RFH), Eastwood played Division 1 lacrosse at Rutgers University in the 1980s. In 1997 he founded the RFH Boys and Girls Youth Lacrosse program and subsequently helped organize board approval for a boys’ lacrosse team at RFH. From 2014-16 Eastwood headed the RFH boys’ varsity team, leading them to Shore Conference Championship titles in 2014 and 2016 and a Group 1 State Championship in 2015. Off the field, Eastwood is a vice president at Landesbank Baden Wurttemberg in New York.

SHORE CONFERENCE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP By Mike Ready

WEST LONG BRANCH – With seven teams currently ranked in the NJ.com Top 20, including five teams in the top seven and six in the top 10, the Shore Conference has once again asserted itself as the most competitive girls’ basketball conference in New Jersey. The Shore Conference has consistently placed teams in the Tournament of Champions final four and in the last two years both teams in the final have represented the Shore Conference. Manasquan beat St. Rose for the 2015 T.O.C. title and Saint John Vianney bested Manasquan to win it all last season when they finished ranked No. 1 in New Jersey and ninth nationally.

The Warriors are led by junior Dara Mabrey (19.3 pts., 3.4 rebs., 2.5 stls., 46 three’s), Northeastern University signee Stella Clark (9.9 pts., 3.7 rebs., 4.0 assists, 2.4 stls.), sophomore Faith Masonius (8.9 pts., 5.0 rebs., 2.5 assists), senior Victoria Galvin (4.8 pts., 4.0 rebs.), sophomore Lola Mullaney (8.1 pts., 2.7 rebs.), senior Addie Masonius (3.9 rebs., 2.0 assists) and senior Carley Geissler (3.6 pts., 1.7 assists). Red Bank Catholic (19-2, 12-2) – a T.O.C. semifinalist in 2013 – has made a steady climb up the polls this season and is currently ranked No. 3 in the state and second in the Shore. Both its losses came at the hands of B North division foe Manasquan but do have quality wins over No. 17 Camden Catholic, No. 14 Newark Tech and No. 5 Saint John Vianney. University of Vermont signee Josie Larkin (12.5 pts.), juniors Haley Moore (7.7 pts.), Katie Rice (8.8 pts.), Rose Caverly (8.4 pts.) and Amanda Hart (6.1 pts.), and senior Maureen Coakley (5.5 pts.) lead a balanced scoring attack for the Caseys that just continues to get better. St. Rose (20-2, 16-0) has clinched the B Central title and is coming off an impressive 50-47 road win versus Franklin – ranked No.11 in the state – and is riding an 11-game winning streak. The Purple Roses are ranked fourth in the state and No. 3 in the Shore Conference. Seniors Ellyn Stoll (9 pts., 2.8 rebs., 4.5 assists) and Jenn Louro (11.1 pts., 7.5 rebs., 3 assists) along with juniors Lucy Thomas (13 pts., 9.8 rebs., 1.6 blks.) and Mikayla Markham (10.3 pts., 2.4 rebs., 5.3 assists, 2.4 stls.) are all big-time players that step up in big spots for the Purple Roses.

TOMS RIVER NORTH’S #23 JENNA PAUL In the 2015 Tournament of Champions, in addition to Manasquan and St. Rose, the Shore Conference sent another two representatives – Middletown South and Saint John Vianney – making it four of the six tournament teams hailing from the Shore Conference. This season, Manasquan (21-1, 14-0) had been ranked No. 1 in the state until they fell to current No. 1 Rutgers Prep, 64-52, on January 29. Since then they’ve reeled off four straight wins, including an impressive 70-61 win over Rumson-Fair Haven, to secure the No. 2 spot in the state and a No. 1 ranking in the Shore. They’ve also clinched the outright Shore Conference B North title and are a sure bet to be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Shore Conference Tournament.

At No. 5 in the state and fourth in the Shore, Saint John Vianney (18-3, 12-0) has won eight games in a row including Thursday’s win over Rumson-Fair Haven that clinched the A Central for the Lancers. Its three losses have been to National Christian (MD) – ranked No.9 in USA Today’s East polls, Rutgers Prep – No. 1 in the state and fifth in the East, and Red Bank Catholic. The Lancers are led by seniors Kim Evans (13.2 pts.), Courtney Dobrzynski (3.5 pts.) and Julia Ramos (5.5 pts.), juniors Madison Doring (6.7 pts.) and Sarah Furch and sophomores Sajada Bonner (9.1 pts.), Sarah Karpel l (7.5 pts.) and Brelynn Bellamy (5.2 pts.). Rumson-Fair Haven (17-4, 10-2) is loaded with talent but just can’t seem to get over the hump in big games as Thursday’s 57-46 loss to Saint John Vianney would indicate. With the postseason around the corner, it’s time for the Bulldogs to play like the No. 5-ranked team in the Shore and fifth in the state.

The Bulldogs’ lineup begins with Player of the Year candidate Hannah Scanlon (22.1 pts., 12.2 rebs., 2.4 assists, 2.7 blks., 1.5 stls.), fellow senior Katie Foos (7.0 pts., 3.4 rebs.), juniors Tori Hyduke (14.4 pts., 5.2 rebs., 6.2 assists, 2.9 stls.), and Michaela McGarvey (7.0 pts., 2.8 rebs., 1.8 assists) and top freshman Lucy Adams (4.8 pts., 4.0 rebs., 2.1 blks). The loss of senior Megan Volker (4.8 pts., 5.0 rebs., 2.2 assists) to injury has hurt the Bulldogs’ depth. Neptune’s Player of the Year candidate Desiree Allen has been everything advertised and more. Allen’s 22.6 points per game average has been the catalyst behind Neptune’s (19-2, 12-0) No. 6 ranking in the Shore and No. 13 position in the state, while capturing the A North title as well. Seniors Alexis Bennett, Brianna Love and Di’Avian Foster, junior Taylor Gardner and freshman Makayla Andrew have all been instrumental to the Fliers’ success this season. Toms River North (20-1, 14-0) absorbed its first loss of the season last Tuesday dropping a 57-50 decision to Neptune, knocking them out of the ranks of the undefeated. Its only real quality win of the season is a 14-point win over No. 17 Sayreville (20-1) back in December. They’ve clinched the outright A South title and are currently ranked seventh in the Shore and 14th in the state.

Senior Ashley Tutzauer (17.8 pts.), sophomore Jenna Paul (16.9 pts.) and junior Amanda Johnson (10.7 pts.) have been the driving force behind the Mariners’ success this season with juniors Krystal Hund and Lindsey Cabey chipping in as well. Middletown South (13-6,10-4) started the season ranked in the top 10 in the state but has gradually worked its way out of the top 20, although still ranked eighth in the Shore Conference. A lopsided loss to Red Bank Catholic in mid-January hurt its chances but losing three of its last four, including another loss to RBC and a 14-point loss to Manasquan, has seen them dip even further in the rankings. Seniors Alexandra Balsamo (15.5 pts., 4.1 rebs., 1.6 assists, 2.2 stls.) and Haley Dalonzo (9.1 pts., 4.3 rebs., 2.3 assists), along with sophomore Isla Brennan (8.7 pts., 6.4 rebs., 2.6 assists, 12.6 stls.) make up the heart and soul of the team with newcomer freshman Kayla Richardson (7.3 pts., 4 rebs., 1.5 assists, 1.4 stls.), sophomores Eve Pirie and Samantha Keenan and freshman Stephanie Mayerhofer contributing as well. The Shore Conference Tournament’s first-round games start Tuesday, February 14.
