TRINITY HALL BASKETBALL IS NO LONGER THE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

SPECIAL THANKS Red Bank Regional High School for hosting the 18th Annual JSN Basketball Preview photo shoot. BASKETBALL PHOTO SHOOT PHOTOGRAPHERS Tom Smith and Mike Ward

By Mike Ready

TINTON FALLS – Last season, its first as a full-fledge member of the Shore Conference, Trinity Hall made quite a splash. The Monarchs went 18-8 including a 14-2 record in the division which was good for second place in the Shore Conference Class B Central. Their only two divisional losses of the season were against perennial Shore Conference power St. Rose, who went on to win the Shore Conference Tournament championship before falling to Rutgers Prep in the Non-Public, B South semifinals. Rutgers Prep advanced to the Tournament of Champions semifinals losing to eventual TOC champion Franklin, who beat Manasquan in the final for the title. Trinity Hall qualified for their first-ever Shore Conference Tournament last season and made a respectable showing in their inaugural SCT game. As the 20th seed, the Monarchs trailed No. 13 seed Holmdel, 30-19, at the half but went toe-to-toe with the Hornets in the second half even outscoring them, 13-12, in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough as they ended up losing, 54-43. The Monarchs also qualified for their second straight state playoff appearance. As a No. 9 seed in the Non-Public, South A first round, Trinity Hall led, 12-10, after the first quarter against eighthseeded Roselle Catholic and only trailed by seven points entering the fourth quarter before the Lions pulled away for a 70-51 win. Although they came up short in both postseason games the Monarchs showed they belonged there and with their entire starting lineup and top bench players returning this season, expectations are running high. “Now that everyone knows we’re in the Shore Conference and we’re a force to be reckoned with it will be a little different, said senior forward Bridget Andree. “We just got to keep working hard, utilize our strengths as a team and I think we can have a good year.

Page 3

TRINITY HALL “I think all we can really do is learn from it, Andree said of their first-round exit in the state playoffs. “We made some mistakes that game and we just want to take hold of those mistakes and improve upon it this year. The experience of playing such tough competition can only help us. But this season is shaping up to be the one that really puts Trinity Hall on the Shore Conference map and it all starts with the 5-foot10 Andree – younger sister of former CBA star Pat Andree, who is averaging 8.4 points and 4.3 rebounds for Lehigh this season.

Please note that JSN does not pick any of the athletes shown in our preview issue. All of the athletes that attended the photo shoot were selected by their schools. JSN invites every school in the Shore Conference to participate in our annual basketball photo shoot. Please note that if you do not see your school represented in this issue, it is either due to the fact that they chose not to participate or the families/HS were unable to drive in the snowstorm which fell at the time of the shoot. It is not an omission on JSN’s part. Every school and their athletes are important to us. If you feel that your athlete/team should have been featured, please contact your school to address the issue.

Andree was a first team B Central selection last season after averaging 17.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists and is a preseason candidate for the Shore Conference Player of the Year award. She can do it all and is the Monarchs’ go-to player with the game on the line.

Special thanks to Red Bank Regional for hosting JSN 18th annual basketball photo shoot. It was a great success due in part to RBR’s cooperation during a snow fall.

Senior Kathryn Kwapniewski is back at point guard and is one of the better floor leaders in the Shore after averaging 9.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists a year ago. She can distribute the ball, rebound and score with the best of them.

God Bless and Happy Holidays, The Attardi Family

Junior guard Collen Cusat returns to the starting lineup and is another one of those Trinity Hall players that has multidimensional talents scoring 9.3 points per game while averaging 2.5 rebounds and 1.8 assist a year ago. And you can add senior forward Nicole Ventura to that list of allaround players that Trinity Hall seems to have the market on. Ventura is another returning starter and averaged a very respectable 7.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists last season.

Trinity Hall’s basketball evolution has been a slow but steady progression but it was during the 2015-16 season that they really started to make inroads taking their program to the next level.

The fifth returning starter to the Monarchs stacked lineup is senior Catherine Loder, who knocked down 5.2 points per game with 3.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists. Sophomore Caitlyn Wingertzahn (4.0 pts. 3.3 rebs.), junior Grace Kenny and sophomore Collen Kelly give Trinity Hall experience and depth off the bench.

They went 13-9 overall that season with quality wins against the likes of Shore, Ocean, Freehold Twp., Long Branch, Union Catholic and Morristown-Beard. They also got their first taste of postseason play but took it on the chin losing to state power Patrick School, 73-34, in the Non-Public, South A first round.

“We’ve all been playing together since middle school so we have some chemistry, said Andree. “This year I think our goal is to make it into the top 10 of the Shore Conference and prove ourselves that way. Just kind of keep working hard and doing the best we can do, especially for such a new program.

VETERAN LONG BRANCH SQUAD HOPES TO MIDDLETOWN NORTH BOYS BASKETBALL DUPLICATE FOOTBALL’S CHAMPIONSHIP RUN HOPES TO BUILD ON RECENT SUCCESS By Mike Ready

By John Sorce

LONG BRANCH – With nine players, including four starters, fresh off the gridiron, the Green Wave basketball team is hoping for the same result on the court as the football team had on the field when they won this year’s NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV championship.

been playing everyone’s playing for a position.”

While this may set the Green Wave back initially with a lack of practice time and getting into basketball shape, it will only be temporary and in the long run should actually help once they make a full transition.

Dennis, only a junior, is back to run the show at the point and is the only underclassman in the projected starting lineup. Dennis posted big numbers averaging 13.6 points and 4.2 assists on his way to being selected first team All B North.

Barring any unforeseen changes, however, Fitzgerald’s starting lineup should look pretty much the same as it did last season, which is a good thing for the new coach.

LONG BRANCH

“I think football helped us a lot because after we got the ring everyone’s getting after it and we want to have that feeling again,” said starting point guard Marc Dennis. “I think that feeling will carry over to the basketball season.” Once again the Class B North will be a bear getting to the top of the division with the likes of Manasquan, Middletown North and Red Bank Catholic all expected to be in the mix for the division title again this year along with Long Branch, who has as good of a shot at the title as do any of the others – and just may be the favorites. Last season Long Branch was in contention for a share of the Class B North title up until the last week of the season when they won four of their last five regular season games including a 10-point win over Red Bank Catholic, who shared a piece of the title with the Warriors and the Lions. With four of last season’s five starters back from a team that went 15-11, including going 9-5 in the B North, the Green Wave is looking to take the division title and make a longer run in the state playoffs after a quarterfinal elimination last season. “My freshman year and sophomore year we felt like we could’ve got it,” Dennis said about falling short the previous two years. “We let a few games slip but now that’s our main focus – first the B North then Shore Conference, then the states.” However, first-year head coach Sean Fitzgerald has made it clear to his team that no one is assured of a starting job and that it must be earned. “Our new coach, Fitz, made it clear that everyone’s playing for a position,” said Dennis when asked what the starting lineup will be. “No matter if you had a spot last year or how long you’ve

Senior shooting guard Tyree Morris – a four-year varsity player – returns after a year that earned him third team B North honors after averaging 14.2 points per game. Seniors Kevin Porch and T.J. Fosque – star wide receivers on the football team – return at forward and bring size and athleticism to the club. The 6-foot-4 Fosque has made an oral commitment to play football for Monmouth University. Add 6-foot-5 center Kaymar Mimes into the mix and the Green Wave boasts a front court that envies none but will intimidates all. Mimes is an All-State defensive end holding scholarship offers from Rutgers, Michigan State and Wake Forest just to name a few, and he’ll be patrolling the paint throwing his big body around. Senior guard Mark Hill also returns after playing significant minutes off the bench last season as the sixth man but Hill’s role this season will be as key to the team’s success as anyone’s. Expect junior guard Sir Hill to break into the rotation at some point after moving up from JV. Sophomore 6-foot-3 Lucas Telles De Sa will be in the forward rotation along with juniors Matt Clark and Latrell Bennett, while seniors Juwan Wilkins – who quarterbacked the football team, Laron Young and Elijah Sherin will provide depth at guard. “We just have to buy in and eliminate as many distractions as you possibly can,” Dennis said when asked what has to happen for the team to take the step to the next level. “Everyone has to focus and be prepared every day. Coach wants us to compete every day. Compete in practice, compete in games just always compete.”

MIDDLETOWN – It was a tale of two seasons for Middletown North boys basketball last season, with an injury to one of the top players in the Shore Conference the defining moment.

Cherry transferred from Mater Dei Prep two seasons ago and came off the bench early on, but saw his role expand as he got more acclimated with the program. He started the second half of the season and led the Lions in 3-point shooting percentage.

“We started the season very well and then Rob Higgins broke his wrist,” head coach Mike Iasparro said. “He missed five games and we lost four out of those five games. When he came back, we went on a run and put ourselves in a good position for the postseason.”

“We’re expecting Higgins to get a lot of attention from defenses this year, which I think is going to open up for opportunities for MIDDLETOWN NORTH Dave and Sky to score the basketball more often,” Iasparro said. “We’re looking for both those guys to not only take on a The Lions finished the season with a 16-11 record and earned bigger leadership role, but also take on a bit of the scoring load a share of the B North championship. YOUTH THE KEY FOR MANCHESTER GIRLS BASKETBALL

COLTS NECK BOYS BASKETBALL HOPING VETERANS CAN MAINTAIN SUCCESS By John Sorce

COLTS NECK – Colts Neck boys basketball is coming off a season that saw them finish 15-9 and drop a heartbreaker to Middletown North in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Group IV championship. They also were defeated by the Lions in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament.

By John Sorce

MANCHESTER – Despite being one of the youngest teams in the Shore Conference last year, the Manchester girls basketball team is coming off a season in which they finished 24-6 and won their first South Jersey, Group II title. The Hawks advanced to the Final Four in the NJSIAA Group II championship and lost to top-seed and eventual champion Manasquan. “Special is the right word,” said head coach Dave Beauchemin, who is entering his seventh season leading the Hawks, when asked about the youth of his team. “Our expectations going into last season were high, but to say we would have been able to accomplish what we did, everything was probably happening a year ahead of schedule. To see our girls take the court at the beginning of a game knowing they are talented and confident despite being so young is really fun to see.” Manchester only graduated two seniors last year and returns many key players, including sophomore point guard Kemari Reynolds, who burst onto the scene as a freshman. Reynolds scored 431 points a season ago and averaged 14.4 points per game. She made 17 3-pointers, had 124 rebounds (4.1 per game) 121 steals (4 per game), and 79 assists (2.6 per game). “She’s just a special player,” Beauchemin said about Reynolds. “I’ve seen some very explosive and in-control ball-handlers, but there’s usually one thing missing at times that can be a developmental piece. For her, it seems that it was all there right away. Everything can get better, but it was all there. For such a special player, she was able to step right into our system and execute. And with the talent we’re adding around her this year, it’s going to allow her to display even more aspects of her game. To me, it’s not just hype with her. She really is a special player.” Joining the varsity team as newcomers this season include freshman forward Destiny Adams, freshman guard Morgan Brustman, sophomore guard Nahkaleigh Hayes-Jones, and junior guard/forward Kaleigh Sharry. Adams is the younger sister of junior forward Dakota Adams, and the two sisters are excited about playing high school basketball together. “It’s going to be nice to have somebody there to help me through it,” Destiny Adams said. “We’ve played a lot together and we’re definitely used to each other. It’s going to be pretty cool.” Dakota Adams said.

Page 11

MANCHESTER Dakota Adams returns after scoring 213 points (7.1 per game) and 266 rebounds (8.9 per game). She also averaged a block per game. Beauchemin is excited to watch the sisters play together at the varsity level. “The size and versatility they both have is really special,” Beauchemin said. “And with the year that Kemari (Reynolds) had last season, Dakota being a third-team All Shore selection goes unnoticed at times. With her sister coming in as a freshman and as good they are, the blend of those two is really going to be nice. It has also pushed Dakota to improve herself in other ways because she has done a lot for us in the post. She has been a frontcourt player for us. Her sister can do a lot of the same things. It has forced Dakota to expand her game and be comfortable in other areas and it’s helped her a lot. They’ve done real well together in the preseason and it’s been real exciting to watch.” Asha Harper will be the key senior this season for Manchester after transferring from Donovan Catholic two years ago. Beauchemin noted that Harper is mature player who is very versatile, and is one of the team’s vocal leaders. But youth is the key for Manchester, and it will be again in 2017-18. Beauchemin admits that the next few seasons with this group can be exciting, but girls basketball in the Shore Conference is always competitive. “We really do believe the sky is the limit. But there’s one reality that we try to live in and have respect for, there might not be anything like girls basketball in the Shore Conference,” Beauchemin said. “We do have that realization that as talented as we are and can continue to be, there’s still some big dogs out there that will never go away. Trying to take hold and maintain supremacy of B South is really that first goal, staying relevant in the division, which we know we can. And then remaining one of those teams to beat in South Jersey, Group II is another goal. For them now, with the taste of it last year, we want to see how far we can go. That was our first trip to a sectional final and to win one, we put ourselves into rarified air in Manchester. If we can build on that and get to the Tournament of Champions, it would be really special for these girls. We know the talent is there to do that, but we know there is so much talent in the Shore Conference and in the state.”

“It was a young team. We were rebuilding after a state championship,” head coach Lou Piccola said. “We came back and finished third behind Freehold Township and Marlboro in A North, which is the toughest league in the Shore Conference. We come back this year with some players who have experience and hopefully we can use that experience from last year and hopefully expand on that. “We’re in a very tough division, and every night you have to be ready. If you’re not ready, you’re going to get caught,” Piccola continued. “To me, any team in our division is a tough game. But if we continue to get better, I think we’ll be alright.”

“We have a lot of players that are capable and I’m willing to do what’s best for the team.” Also returning as key players for their senior years are Ben Bosland and Robbie Hill. “Bosland is probably our most complete player because he adds a number of dimensions,” Piccola said. “He handles the ball a little bit, he leads the team in assists and averages six or seven rebounds a game. He gets a couple of steals and he can put up double-digit points if he had to. He’s also 6’3” so he gives you a different look. “People don’t realize that you need specialty players and that’s what Robbie is. He can hit the jump shot and he can guard the post. He’s 6’3” and he’s guarding guys who are 6’7” or 6’8” every night. People don’t realize the magnitude of having someone go out and do that and compete like he does.”

Dan Gaines was first team All-Shore in A North last season as a junior, and he returns as one of nine seniors to a veteran Colts Neck team.

Piccola mentioned junior guard Andrew Abujawheh and junior forward Brian Hill as key newcomers to the varsity level. Also stepping up from JV for their senior years are William Barrett, Michael Federici and Michael Bartner.

“He’s really grown as a leader and he’s matured a lot the last three years,” Piccola said. “That’s what you expect from seniors after going through four years to get to now. It’s their time.”

Having nine seniors return gives Colts Neck one of the more veteran teams in A North, and Piccola hopes that their experience will help them down the stretch in close games.

“Last year I was more of a scorer, but this year I’m going to try to get other players more involved,” Gaines said.

“It shows us that hopefully we have the maturity level and the fact that we’ve been there,” Piccola said. “It comes down to doing the little things in close games. You got to get the charge, the 50-50 ball, and the big rebound.” At the end of the day, Piccola wants to see the Cougars give their best effort.

COLTS NECK

“I don’t know what the next step is in the Shore Conference because when you have to deal with schools like Ranney and Mater Dei, they’re able to get players from all over,” Piccola said. “It’s a little tough to take the next step, to be honest. We just want to go out there and be recognized as a tough, competitive team. I just want my kids to compete. I always tell them ‘you can’t control whether or not the ball goes in the basket, you can control how hard you play.’”

SAINT JOHN VIANNEY’S GOAL – A RETURN TO THE TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS By Mike Ready

HOLMDEL – Following the 2015-16 season which saw Saint John Vianney go 31-1, capture their 16th state championship, win their seventh Tournament of Champions title and finish ranked tenth nationally, last season was billed as somewhat of a rebuilding year – especially after graduating All-State guard and current DePaul University standout Kelly Campbell.

Junior Rahmena Henderson transferred from Neptune a year ago and after a year in the program will add experience and depth at the point guard spot coming off the bench as the sixth man. Incoming guards Katie Hill and Christine Whitehead are both expected to be impact freshmen.

However, for the Lady Lancers it’s not so much rebuilding as it is reloading. The 5-foot-10 Hill is long and athletic with a varsity-ready jumper while the 5-foot-9 Whitehead’s quickness allows her to knock down jumpers while utilizing her athleticism.

They still won 23 games a year ago and went 12-0 in the division to take the Class A Central title and were Shore Conference Tournament runner-ups losing to St. Rose, and Non-Public, South A semifinalists falling to eventual champion Red Bank Catholic, who went on to the Tournament of Champions semifinals.

Already playing in the toughest conference in the state, the Lancers are known for their competitive non-conference schedule and this year is no different with last season’s TOC champion Franklin and TOC semifinalist Rutgers Prep on their schedule on back-to-back days. They’ll also play Georgetown Prep (MD), University, St. Anthony’s (NY), Long Island Lutheran (NY), Christ the King (NY) and Christian Brothers (NY).

Although they must replace first team All-Shore center Kimi Evans, who’s now getting playing time at Seton Hall University as a true freshman, the good news for the Lancers is they return three starters from that team and three others who have starting experience and saw sizable playing time, along with two freshmen who are expected to contribute immediately. “It’s definitely a different team; we worked really hard over the summer,” said junior Sajada Bonner, who was a second team Class A Central selection a year ago. “And I feel like our team is going to be very good in transition. We do love each other and I think we have a better chemistry on the team this year so I think we’re going to have a really good year.” Bonner, whose 8.9 points per game average was second on the team, will start at guard along with American University commit Maddie Doring (7.2 pts/game), who at 5-foot-11 adds size along with her proven ball handling and shooting skills. There’s a lot hype behind Bonner entering the season with people quietly labeling her as a candidate for the Shore Conference Player of the Year award.

“Yea, definitely,” Bonner said when asked if she thought this year’s team is being somewhat overlooked. “I think we’re going to come up big this year but right now nobody knows it. It starts with how we work in practice and just how hard we work every day and when we get to the games we’ll worry about that.” Junior Sarah Karpell is one of the best combo guards in the Shore and has given her verbal commitment to Fordham University. She’s back as starting point guard where she was a first team Class A Central selection last season after averaging 7.5 points a game. Karpell saw playing time as a freshman before nailing down a starting point guard spot last season when she developed into a true floor general while honing her all-around skills.

The Lancers will still face some of their stiffest competition from within the Shore Conference ranks with Red Bank Catholic and Rumson-Fair Haven on its regular season schedule and St. Rose and Manasquan waiting for them in the postseason. “We just take everything one game at a time, one practice at a time, one play at a time,” said Bonner. “It’s really an honor (to play for SJV) and when we put our jerseys on we know that this is really important and we do play every game for our school, but not only for our school but for our coach. She (Dawn Karpell) puts so much hard work into this program it’s really is an honor playing for Dawn. She’s amazing; the work and emotion she puts in is different from other coaches and she really is a mother figure to us.”

Senior Sarah Furch and 6-foot-0 junior Brelynn Bellamy will be the starting forwards and both are expected to take their game to another level this year after solid seasons a year ago.

John Vianney High School Already holding numerous DI offers, Bonner can drive to the basket, hit the jumper and is super on the offensive glass.

The 6-foot-0 Furch – a West Point commit – has the ability to shoot three’s, post up or explode off the dribble and is a big-time rebounder, while Bellamy has size, athleticism and can flat out play, according to Lancers head coach Dawn Karpell.

“#TOCORBUST, that’s our goal,” Bonner said.

Saint John Vianney High School Looking forward to a good season Saint John Vianney High School

SHOT AT THIRD STRAIGHT SCT TITLE HELPING MATER DEI PREP STAY FOCUSED ON ULTIMATE GOAL By Mike Ready

By John Sorce

MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP – Although the Seraphs graduated first team All-Shore forward Elijah Barnes – now at Princeton University – and second team All-Shore guard Elijah Mitchell, they bring back three starters in addition to two transfers who will contribute immediately.

RED BANK – Only one game separated the Red Bank Catholic girls basketball team and the Tournament of Champions title game last season. The Caseys are coming off a season that saw them go 284, win the NJSIAA Non-Public A Championship and fall to Manasquan in the Tournament of Champions semifinals.

Last season came to an end in the NJSIAA Non-Public, South B quarterfinals when Mater Dei fell to the Patrick School, who went on to win the Tournament of Champions title and claim the No. 1 spot in the final NJ.com Top 20 rankings and finished ranked seventh nationally in the final Max Prep Top 20 poll. “The team is working hard every day to get better and accomplish our goals,” said starting senior guard Yasin Pretlow. We know what we have to do; everybody wants to beat Mater Dei but it’s our job not to let that happen. We’re just working hard focusing on our practices trying to get better as a team.” Mater Dei will have no shortage of guards and you will see four guards in the starting lineup to begin the season. All-Shore point guard and Loyola University commit Kenny Jones is back to lead the quartet of guards after averaging 11.8 points, 2.8 rebounds per game while finishing fourth in the Shore Conference with 5.68 assists per game.

9 forward Savior Akuwovo, who transferred from St. Anthony’s when they were forced to close their doors. On the flip side, Mater Dei added St. Anthony’s transfer Alexander Rice – the son of Monmouth University head coach King Rice. The 6-foot-3 all-purpose guard started as a sophomore last season for the Friars and had his best game of the season on Feb. 10 against Ranney when he scored 24 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with four seconds left the game. For the season he averaged a little over 10 points per game and will immediately step into a starting role at Mater Dei. Mater Dei head coach Ben Gamble played for Bobby Hurley at St. Anthony’s before coaching under him for 15 years so it’s a nice fit for Rice. That leaves 6-foot-9 center Adam Afifi as the only true big man in the starting lineup but he’s a good one. Playing second fiddle to Barnes last season he still averaged 6.8 point per game and 4.2 rebounds. You can expect to see those numbers climb significantly this season as the paint will be his to roam.

Senior Kyle Cardasi returns in the backcourt as a two-year starter with the ability to knock down the three-point shot sinking 40 threepointers a year ago while averaging 11.4 points and 2.4 rebounds. He scored 23 points including five treys in their first-round win over Gloucester Catholic in the state playoffs.

The Seraphs also added 6-foot-5 forward Jamir Watkins, who is expected to jump right into the front court mix and if he doesn’t start he’ll be the sixth man. He comes over from Trenton Catholic where he averaged 6.9 points a game as a freshman and can jump out of the gym. He saw more and more playing time as the season went on a year ago and he led the team with 14 points in their state playoff win versus Ewing.

Pretlow steps into a starting role this season after excelling as the sixth man last season when he averaged 9.9 points, 2.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game. You can expect him to take his game to the next level this season.

Jeremy Weinstein, a 6-foot-5 junior forward, is another option for Gamble in the front court along with senior Kyle Devaney – a standout WR/DB on the Seraphs football team – in the back court.

“Defense, defense, defense, we got to get better on defense,” Pretlow said of the keys to a successful season. “The better we are on defense the easier it makes our offense click. Just harassing guys on the defensive end, trying to get steals, jumping the lane to get easy buckets in transition that’s what we work on every day in practice.”

Pete Gorman (So., 6-5, Forward), Sean Turner (So., 6-0, Guard), Jalen Jones (Fr., Guard), Myles Cystein (Jr., Forward), and Tahaj Parland (So., Guard) will provide depth off the bench.

As much talent as Mater Dei holds they’ll be an underdog in the Class B Central race going into the season. After splitting two games and sharing the division title with Ranney last season, the Panthers return all five starters including two five-star recruits and brought in 6-foot-

year. We’re just focused on our own team and running through people in the Shore and to eventually making it to the TOC. That’s something that’s never been done at Mater Dei Prep and this team can accomplish that goal.”

“Obviously, it’s to win the Shore Conference Championship for three

a row,” said 10x8.pdf Pretlow when asked the team’s 2:29 goals were MaterDeiPrep2017 - Jersey Sporting News in half-page 1 what 12/12/17 AM this

The Caseys return this season with three seniors who are committed to play Division 1 basketball – Katie Rice (Lehigh), Rose Caverly (Vermont) and Hayley Moore (Binghamton) next fall. “It was a really long, stressful process but I had great mentors like Coach Montano and my father to help me with it,” Rice said on her commitment to Lehigh. “I took a lot of visits there in the spring and summer and I just really felt at home at Lehigh. I really liked the academic part of it and I liked all the girls on the team.” “It’s been really enjoyable,” Montano said about Rice. “She’s a coaches’ daughter, so she’s extremely smart. She understands the game and plays every possession at 100 miles an hour. That inspires the other girls to elevate their play to that level. She loves the game and anytime you have a kid that loves what they’re doing, they’re really fun to be around.”

“Anytime you put the ball in a kid’s hands, you want to keep it with your team. Her assist to turnover ratio has been as good as anybody I’ve ever had,” Montano said about Caverly. “She gets the ball to the right people and more importantly, she doesn’t throw it to the other team. She spends a lot of time in the gym and she shot 46 percent from 3-point range last year. When you have a point guard who doesn’t turn it over and hits threes at that level at the high school level, you have some-

Being in the same position for 28 years, Montano has seen a lot over the years. But this is a team he enjoys coaching because they play the game hard. “It’s hard to compare over the years, but this group plays the game the right way,” Montano said. “They share the ball and compete on every possession. They’re up there with some of the better teams we’ve had and as a coach, anytime you have a team that can do those kind of things, it makes them a fun team to coach.” Red Bank Catholic hopes to take its experience from last season and take that final step in 2017-18. Being there last season helped, but they did graduate some key seniors from last year. How the younger players, like freshman guard Sophia Sabino and sophomore guard Maddie Fagan, contribute right away can prove to determine just how far this team can go. “I told the girls the other day that when we get to February, that’s when we want to be playing our best basketball,” Montano said. “Hopefully we can keep our season going and keep the careers going for our seniors. We lost four kids who were an extremely big part of that group and we need to be careful that we don’t put too much pressure on the kids that are moving up. At the same time, our seniors and myself need them to elevate their game to the level we need them to get to so we can win. We’re happy about last year, we can draw from the experience and you know how to get there now. But at the same time, it’s a brand new season and we need to earn it all over again.”

Caverly returns as a senior and the team’s point guard. Montano mentioned her ability to control the ball and shoot from 3-point range as true assets.

“Last year was really rewarding from a standpoint that they worked so hard,” head coach Joe Montano said. “For me, it was very enjoyable because of the fact they put the team first. It was fun for all of us.”

Add a deep bench and a group of up-and-coming underclassmen and you can expect another top 20 finish for Mater Dei this season after finishing ranked No. 10 in the state a year ago. They also claimed the top spot in the final Shore Conference rankings after going 25-4 and winning their second straight Shore Conference championMATER ship beating Marlboro, 54-41. The Seraphs will be attempting to be the first team to win three straight Shore Conference Tournament titles since Christian Brothers Academy won four straight from 1993 to 1996.
