NEW LOOK TOMS RIVER NORTH SHOULD BE IN THE THICK OF THINGS AGAIN THIS SEASON By Mike Ready

TOMS RIVER – The 2016 season was marked by a number of highs and lows for Toms River North, beginning with its late season 8-7 loss to Brick Memorial denying the Mariners a share of the Shore Conference Class A South title.

2.50 earned run average and 38 K’s, while Sasso recorded a team-low 0.95 earned run average in 22 innings striking out 24 and walking just nine batters. Sprinkle won three games against no losses in 27.2 innings pitched with a tidy 2.53 earned run average with 19 strikeouts and nine bases on balls.

Three days later the Mariners rebounded to defeat arch-rival Toms River South in the Ocean County Tournament final for its second OCT championship in four years as Brandon Mullins pitched seven shutout innings in the Mariners’ 2-0 eight-inning win. Then, two days later, the third-seeded Mariners were upset by No. 14 seed Freehold, 6-1, in the Shore Conference Tournament second round as Tom Holdorf pitched and hit the Colonials to the win. In the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV tournament, the eighth-seeded Mariners beat No. 9 seed Eastern, 4-3, in the first round scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the win before falling to top-seed and eventual SJ Group IV champion Clearview, 2-0, in the second round. Toms River North’s biggest challenge this season will be replacing 10 graduated seniors, including slugger Joey Rose – a fifth-round draft pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks – who led the Shore Conference in homers (11) and slugging percentage (1.014) and was second in runs batted in with 38 while batting .437. The Mariners will also have to replace two thirds of its outfield with Jeff Ciervo (LF) and Dave Cordoma (CF) both graduating. However, first-team All-Shore shortstop and Rutgers commit Mike Nyisztor and first-team All-Class A South selections left fielder Austin Feigin and pitcher Brendan Mullins return for the

Mullins is penciled in as the No. 1 starter with Bellissimo No. 2 and Sasso the No. 3 starter. Junior Craig Larsen, who had a couple of starts a year ago, will be the fourth starter when needed and Sprinkle will be the closer. 2017 season along with junior first baseman/pitcher Jared Bellissimo – another Rutgers commit. Pitchers Anthony Sasso, a junior, and senior Brody Sprinkle are also back after breakout seasons on the mound a year ago, so the Mariners’ pitching staff looks to be in really good shape entering the 2017 season. “Last season we kind of relied on Joe (Rose) for a lot of our offensive power,” Nyisztor said. “But I think this year everyone’s going to chip in and do their part and together as a team we’re going to contribute and make up for that loss of Joe.” Nyisztor will be counted on heavily after averaging .448 at the plate a year ago with team-highs in runs scored (38) and stolen bases (14) to go along with one home run and 15 runs batted in. Ballissimo hit .346 and drove in 18 runs while Feigin averaged .342 at the plate with 16 runs batted in and 21 runs scored. Bellissimo also went 4-1 on the mound in 34.1 innings pitched with 32 strike outs and only 11 walks with a 4.28 earned run average. With a teamhigh 47.2 innings pitched, Mullins finished with a 5-1 record and a sterling

If all five hurlers stay healthy and pitch to their potential, the Mariners will boast one of the most talented and deepest pitching staffs in the Shore Conference. This should compensate for the loss of a number of key position players until the newcomers become comfortable in their roles. Look for senior Ian Mindas (C/OF) and juniors Justin Schaff (C/OF), Nick Siblia (OF) and Mike Centeno (P) and sophomore Jonathan Giordano (OF/P) to contribute as well. “I think it’s good that we have returning players who’ve had experience in the big games and all the tournaments,” Nyisztor said. “So as long as the young guys learn from us leaders, I think we can do a lot of damage. “We’ll be more of a contact hitting team this season with guys who really aren’t going to strike out much,” he continued. “A lot of guys put the ball in play hard on the ground and we have a lot of speed so hopefully we can steal extra bases when we can and I think we’re very defensively sound; which is important. And with the pitching staff we have we should be really solid this season.”

Wall Softball’s Focus is on a State Title By Lou Monaco

A state final appearance a season ago just isn’t good enough for the Wall softball team. Having won four of its last six games to end the season, culminating in a 5-0 loss to secondseeded Steinert as an eighth-seed in the NJSIAA/ Wilson Sporting Goods Central Jersey, Group 3 tournament final, Wall is searching for more as its season begins on the first Saturday in April. Three returning players will lead the Crimson Knights, highlighted by senior centerfielder captain and Brookdale Community College-bound Carley Layton. Layton leads the outfield and will provide tremendous speed and decision-making at the plate for Wall, which was an impressive 10-1 at home last season. Senior pitcher and first baseman MaryKate Gallagher returns as a key starter in Wall’s pitching rotation and will provide power at the plate. Junior Courtney Mahoney, having made a strong debut last season with a team-high 34 strikeouts and 59 innings pitched, helps add to a strong one-two punch on the mound.

Page 3

“Our senior leadership is strong and steady, and I have no doubt that their work ethic will inspire the younger players to continue working hard,” said Wall Township head coach Sherri Cate, who will start her second season at the helm. “We may be rebuilding this season, but I wouldn't want to rebuild with any other group of girls.” Six newcomers look to make significant contributions on both sides of the field for Wall including sophomore catcher/shortstop Molly Kernis, sophomore shortstop Casey Steppe, sophomore second baseman Colleen Garrigan, sophomore left-fielder Kristen Campbell, freshman rightfielder Nikki Russo, and freshman third baseman Katie Distefano. “We have a lot of new faces on the field this season, but every player from our junior varsity level up to the youngest varsity starter have given 100%. These girls want to be here, they want to learn and they want to get better as a team. As a coach, you can't ask for anything more,” Cate said. Wall opened its season on the road with a matchup against St. Rose on April Fool’s Day and returns home for three straight games, starting with Monmouth on April 3 (3:45 pm), Middletown North on April 7 (3:45 pm), and Red Bank Catholic on April 11 (3:45 pm). “My coaching staff and I want to rebuild our entire program. We want to get this program back to where it was few years ago, winning division and state titles,” Cate said. “Having this new group of girls learning from a few experienced players, we are completely capable of starting that trend.”

MIDDLETOWN SOUTH HAS MOVED PAST LAST SEASON’S DISAPPOINTING FINISH By Mike Ready

MIDDLETOWN – If it were not for former Christian Brothers Academy ace Luca Dalatri – now starting for University of North Carolina as a freshman – the Eagles very well could’ve won the Shore Conference Tournament and the Monmouth County Tournament. Instead, Dalatri threw two shutouts against the Eagles in tournament play – 3-0 in the MCT semifinals and 2-0 in the SCT final – also beating the Eagles, 3-1, earlier in the season tossing an eight-inning three- hitter striking out 19 batters. In all, CBA was responsible for four of Middletown South’s six losses in 2016 when the Eagles won 23 games including an 11-game winning streak. Middletown South went 8-1 in its final nine games to capture the Class A North title, while Dalatri went on to win the Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year award. However, the Eagles’ most crushing loss of the season came in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III semifinals when Wall scored two runs with two outs in the top of the seventh, including the winning run on an error as No. 7 seed Wall beat the second-seeded Eagles, 3-2. What made the loss all that more frustrating, the Eagles trounced Wall, 10-0, a few weeks prior to the loss. Entering the 2017 season, the Eagles, like most teams, have a number of holes to fill but do return enough to be considered Class A North title contenders once again as well as tournament hopefuls. Their biggest challenge will be replacing the offensive production of third-team All-State pick and current Monmouth University infielder Johnny Zega, who hit .433 with an .887 slugging percentage including 10 home runs and 41 runs batted in, and No. 2 pitcher/INF Austin Markmann (3-2, 1.93 ERA, .378 BA, 2 HR, 22 RBI).

But Middletown South does returns its ace, Monmouth University commit John Martin, a second-team All-Shore selection who posted a misleading 5-3 record with a 1.22 ERA and 34 K’s in 46 innings pitched. Martin was on the losing end of the 2-0 loss to CBA but pitched lights out in the game. He’s also an offensive threat after hitting for a .373 batting average with a .508 on base percentage along with 15 runs scored and 14 RBI and can play first, second or in the outfield. Also back for the Eagles is third team AllShore pick senior Jeremy Joyce, who hit at a .375 clip with a .456 OBP, 21 runs scored, 14 RBI and eight stolen bases. Joyce will be at third base this season and lead off. Senior

Senior Jeff Lewandowski gets the starting nod in one of the outfield spots and most likely will bat second after being a valuable contributor off the bench with starting experience last season. “We’re young in some spots and we’ll need to figure out how to put it all together,” Joyce said. “We have to teach the young guys how to win games like we’ve been doing in the past couple of years.” Six through nine in the batting order is still to be determined as are a number of positions, but it looks like sophomores Aurelio Licata and Robby Zega – younger brother of Johnny – will be in the sixth and seventh spots. Fellow sophomores Dylan Walling and Trevor Brey – younger brother of former South and Rutgers star Howie, now in the Houston Astros organization – and juniors Scott Benigno and Ben Kinsella are all in the mix for the bottom part of the order. Behind Martin the pitching has looked pretty solid this spring with sophomore Joe Sprake winning the No. 2 spot in the rotation and sophomore lefty Jack Lisowski the No. 3 spot. Junior Tom Clappsy and sophomore Jack Roesch – both righties – are in the mix as the fourth starter, as is Zega.

Ben Porpora will be at first and bat third and is going to be counted on to supply some power after hitting three homers and driving in 18 runs and scoring 20 others in a breakout junior campaign that saw him hit for a .312 batting average. A year ago, senior Ryan Ruziecki was an unknown transfer from Raritan but as the season wore on, Ruziecki proved to be a valuable part of the team. He came on strong at the tail end of the season finishing with three home runs and 17 RBI while batting .273. Those numbers should improve this season and Ruziecki will also be counted on for his power numbers. Ruziecki will man second base and hit in the cleanup spot.

Senior Matt Salicco looks to be the main man out of the bullpen with Joyce and Zega in that role as well.

Jackson Liberty Softball Looks to Build Off Last Season’s Success By Lou Monaco

It will be hard to top last season for the Jackson Liberty softball team, but they sure are going to try. Coming off a 21-5 record, including its first-ever Ocean County Tournament championship, Jackson Liberty returns many starters from a season ago, featuring junior starting pitcher and Drexelcommit Meghan Conroy, who was an All-Shore Conference selection. Last year, Conroy hit .385 with 20 hits (including two triples), 14 runs scored, and 11 RBI.

is loose, but knows we are there with a purpose every day. We push each other, while supporting each other. The chemistry is great.” Sophomores Iliana Flores, Kaylee Book, Heather Tsapp and Drew Diodato will have contributing roles to the program, while freshmen Emily Sanbeg and Lauren Cannestro bring new energy to the Lions lineup that posted an impressive 13-2 home record and an 8-3 road ledger a season ago.

Junior Annabelle Santino will continue at first base, while juniors Madison Rodriguez and Amanda Harrison control the outfield for the third straight season. Sophomore Kayla Hayes will move from designated hitter to second base this year.

“We need to focus on ourselves and just worry about playing hard every single day, both in practice and games. There are going to be a lot of teams gunning for us after last season, and our division is exceptionally strong, but if we focus on the little things, the things we concentrate on each day at practice, we will see the payoff in the games,” Borrelli said. “I love that everyone dives every day. It might seem like a small thing, but it shows me that they are always giving everything they have, and that is hard to beat. I always want us to work to increase our range, or make stronger contact most consistently, but again, we are designing our practices to improve in those areas so I'm looking forward to the payoff of the hard work the girls are putting in. We are all very excited.”

“Luckily, we have a lot of our team returning from last year, and I love that everyone on the field is looking forward to building onto the success we had together in the past. We are very much on the same page and know how to work well with each other,” said Jackson Liberty head coach Laura Borrelli. “Everyone

The champions of the Shore Conference B-South Division regular season, the Lions suffered a 3-2 home loss to Wall in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA Central Jersey, Group 3 tournament and dropped a 2-0 decision to Middletown South in the semifinals of the Shore Conference Tournament to end last season.

Senior catcher and Misericordia-bound Brianna Holder (.351 BA, 20 hits with seven doubles and two triples, 21 runs scored, and 13 RBI) moves over from third base the prior three seasons to behind the plate. Senior shortstop and Wagner-bound Kayla Conners (.463 BA, .796 slugging, 25 hits with six doubles, three triples, two home runs, 24 RBI, 15 runs scored) will start up the middle for the fourth straight season.

“We’re definitely going to try to come out strong and win a couple of tournaments this year just because it’s our last ride (for the seniors),” Joyce said. “Coming off those losses was tough and we don’t want to have that happen again so we’re going to keep working harder. Just thinking about it sucks, nobody wants to lose.” Middletown South will get a shot at extracting a little revenge on Wall when the Crimson Knights visit the Eagles in the second game of the season on April 5.

Experience an Asset for SAINT JOHN VIANNEY Christian Brothers Baseball HAS THAT DOMINANT LOOK AS 2017 SEASON APPROACHES By Lou Monaco

By Mike Ready

HOLMDEL – An off year for Saint John Vianney translates into a banner season for most other Shore Conference teams. That’s if you consider last season’s 21-3 record, Class A Central championship and its seventh Monmouth County Tournament title in a row an off year. However, Saint John Vianney players have to live up to a different standard than other teams do when you’re part of a program that’s been the most dominant softball program in the Shore Conference – if not the state – for the past two decades. After losing the 2016 NJ.com Player of the Year and the all-time Shore Conference wins leader Luca Dalatri to graduation and after a successful 21-9 campaign a season ago, the defending Shore Conference Tournament champions are not satisfied. Returning five key starters from a year ago, highlighted by junior pitcher/outfielder Nick Hohenstein (.371 BA, 22 RBI), the Christian Brothers baseball team looks to avenge an 8-3 home season-ending loss to St. Augustine Prep in the quarterfinals of the NJSIAA South Jersey, Non-Public A tournament on May 31. Christian Brothers lost two of its final seven games to end its season a year ago. Other returning starters looking to make significant contributions from last season include senior Brian Golden (1B, .241 BA), senior Joe Sparber (C), junior Jack Harnisch (2B, .220 BA), and junior Andrea Dalatri (P/3B, .225 BA). “We are very young with very little experience on the varsity level. They have had success on the lower levels, so hopefully that will translate to the varsity level. I am confident we will play well defensively and we have above average team speed in the field and on the base paths,” said veteran Christian Brothers head coach Marty Kenney, Sr. (777-328), who will be entering his

remarkable 44th season at the helm. “It is much too early to adequately evaluate the offense and pitching. We have many options, so hopefully we can settle on a starting lineup that will be competitive. I am pleased with their work ethics and overall approach to the game. I think our kids are looking forward to the challenge.” Other players to provide stability and playing experience to a squad that sported records of 14-5 at home and 7-4 on the road include junior catcher Julian Greco, junior first baseman John Dudek, junior pitcher/first baseman Matt Fitzsimmons, junior outfielder Eddie Dudek, junior outfielder Joe Duffy, junior outfielder Mike Martorano, junior pitcher/ outfielder Matt Barnes, junior pitcher Perry Quartuccio, junior pitcher Jake Lawrie, junior pitcher Blaise Venancio, sophomore second baseman Peter Morreale, sophomore shortstop Tommy DiTullio, sophomore pitcher/ third baseman Spencer Bauer, sophomore pitcher/outfielder Connor Baksh, and freshman pitcher Braedin Hunt. Christian Brothers opened its season with two straight home games, starting with the season opener against Brick Memorial this past Saturday, and Freehold Boro on Monday. The Colts hit the road for its first away contest of the season at Manalapan on April 5 with first pitch set for 4 pm.

For the Lancers, last season was more about what they didn’t win than what they did win. What they didn’t win was a semifinal loss to Middletown North in the Shore Conference Tournament and a 1-0 loss to No. 9 seed Donovan Catholic as the No. 1 seed in the Non-Public A South tournament quarterfinals. “We definitely look at it (the losses) as a learning experience,” said senior pitcher Demi Rivera – a third-team All-State and first-team All-Shore selection last season. “We know that we have to work harder this year because we are setting goals. We want to win a state title; we want to win everything actually. It’s definitely hard to stay on top having been on top.”

Page 13

Returning starters include sophomore Alex Agradides (CF), junior Shelli Rivard (3B), Rivera, junior Lindsey Barron (CF), senior Magan Massi (1B), senior Gianna Mavica (RF) and sophomore Alli Jones (C). In that group of starters, three had a batting averages over .400 and three .350 or better. Jones – a Fordham University commit – hit a team-high .430 with one home run, 16 runs batted in and 20 runs scored during a breakout season, while the C. W. Post-bound Rivera was right behind with a .416 average with a team-leading six home runs, 34 runs batted in and 37 hits along with 13 runs scored. The Lancers’ third .400-plus hitter was Massi, who hit for a .406 average with four home runs, 22 runs batted in and 27 runs scored. Mavica – a Princeton University commit and secondteam All-Non-Public pick – flirted with a .400 average but settled for a .386 mark with two home runs, 33 runs batted in and 24 runs scored, while Barron belted four home runs and averaged .364 at the plate with 23 runs batted in and 23 runs scored. Rivard hit .348 with a homer, 18 runs batted in and a team-leading 28 runs scored. Freshman Julia Parker (P/1B) has worked her way into the starting lineup with some stellar play in preseason games and fits right into the Lancers potent offense and Jess Cantana steps in at shortstop to round out the starting lineup for the Lancers. Freshmen Bryn Riser (3B/1B) and Gillian Zack (OF) and sophomore Jessica Campana (SS) are also competing for playing time and have shown promise. “We’re focused on one goal, we all have one key goal and that’s to win a state championship,” Rivera said. “Everyone’s head is in the same place and all we have do is stay focused all year and we should be okay.”

Rivera heads up a group that returns seven starters from a year ago making the Lancers one of the preseason favorites in the Shore Conference, a position the Lancers are very accustomed to. “We wear the name Vianney across our chest with pride,” Rivera said. “We know the reputation Saint John Vianney has but we’re the hardest working team in the Shore Conference and we don’t get anything handed to us.”

KERNAN, GALLO GIVE MIDDLETOWN NORTH ANOTHER CHANCE AT A STATE TITLE By Mike Ready

MIDDLETOWN – The Lions are coming off one of the most heralded seasons in program history finishing ranked No. 1 in the Shore Conference and No. 8 in the state, but face a number of challenges if they are to duplicate that same level of success this upcoming season. Last year saw Middletown North win 27 games and go undefeated (120), winning the Shore Conference Class A North. They won their second straight Shore Conference Tournament championship and reached the final of the Monmouth County Tournament before falling to Saint John Vianney. However, it’s what they didn’t win that sticks with the Lions, who were upset in the NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 semifinals as the No. 1 seed. The loss was a huge disappointment as most felt this was a team destined to win a group title.

“It’s definitely going to be a hard loss but we have the potential to fill her hole,” said senior pitcher and University Rhode Island-commit Riley Kirnan, who won 24 games last season and was a first-team All-Shore selection striking 152 batters with a 2.16 earned run average. “We have Gabby Cerbo and Mackenzie Shelvon to fill her spot and they’re both great players.”

Returning to second base and batting second is Lizzy Dorsa, who had three home runs and 21 runs batted in a year ago with a .381 batting average. Hitting third is second-team All-State right fielder Kayla Gallo – a Florida International University commit – who hit a team-leading .446 while belting five home runs and driving in 41 with 26 runs scored and 24 walks.

The top of the Lions lineup, one through four, is set in stone and will be a nightmare for opposing teams. Leading off will be junior third baseman Milena Wilton who batted .337 with 16 runs batted in while playing flawlessly in the field at third. With 16 walks last season at the top of the order, she’s constantly setting the table for big innings as her 28 runs scored last season indicates.

In addition to pitching, Kernan will bat cleanup this season after hitting .351 a year ago with three homers and 31 runs batted in 97 at bats.

Then in July the team learned that head coach Marc Rosner was leaving the program to take a full-time teaching position at Raritan High School and would assume the position of softball head coach for the Rockets. In his first two seasons at North, Rosner guided the Lions to back-to-back Shore Conference Tournament championships and first title since 1974. Rosner accumulated a combined record of 50-10 over the past two seasons with consecutive state tournament semifinal appearances.

Five through nine in the lineup looks to be interchangeable, but senior catcher Ryan Rasmussen will probably hit in the fifth spot after posting a .314 batting average last season with 19 runs batted in and eight doubles. Last season’s freshman sensation, Adriana Cerbo, who hit for a .410 average in 78 at bats with 19 runs batted in, 22 runs scored and 14 doubles will be in the outfield or as the designated hitter. Sophomore Cara McNulty has hit well this spring and will find her way into the lineup somewhere and after gaining valuable experience off the bench last season, while junior Sam Kanach looks to be penciled in as the starter in left fielder. Junior pitcher/designated hitter Adriana Noterile, and seniors Angela Delanhanty (OF), Emily Kernan (INF/OF) and Megan Dematteo are in the mix as well.

Former Monsignor Donovan and Manalapan head coach Chris Hoffman, in his 13th year coaching with a lifetime record of 138-148, takes over for Rosner.

“Two years in a row we lost it the semifinals in the states,” Kernan said. “I think this year we definitely can win the states. I think we do really well under pressure; we like pressure situations and play our best ball under those conditions. With this team behind me I think we have a great chance of doing big things.”

Entering the upcoming season, the Lions have one gaping hole in the lineup to fill but do return six starters and a number players with starting experience so another run at a state title is a definite possibility for this year’s team. First though, they must find a way to replace the production of first-team All-State first baseman Christine Gebhardt – who is now starting and batting third for Manhattan College.

“I’m sure the team is counting on me,” Gallo said. “But I’m counting on them just as much. I mean we’re a team together.”

JSN would like to thank Red Bank Regional High School for hosting the JSN annual Spring Photo Shoot. It was an amazing night to be around all these great athletes. Not only was this year’s photo shoot the largest we have ever had, but it was also the greatest group of athletes. Every one of the attendees were kind, fun, patient and respectful toward the JSN staff. We would also like to thank to all the Athletic Directors, without whose help the photo shoot would not be the success that it was. God Bless, The Attardi Family

• 2016 Carpenter Cup • 3rd Year Varsity Starter • 2015 Coaster Pitcher of the Year Honorable Mention

Please be advised that all athletes in attendance at the photo shoot were personally selected by their respective high schools. While we make every attempt to include all athletes, we do not personally select the athletes in our preview issues. All Shore Conference high schools are eligible to participate in our annual spring photo shoot. If you would like your high school to feature your athlete/team in the future, please contact your individual high school for more information. Every high school and their athletes are important to us.
