Holmdel Falls To Newton In Group II Final By Sean Simmons
Goals were hard to come by during the NJSIAA Group II semifinal game between the Holmdel Hornets and West Deptford Eagles on November 28th at Toms River East High School. After 80 minutes of scoreless soccer, Zach Bond scored the game-winning goal early in the first overtime period for Holmdel to send the Hornets back to the Group II finals with a hard fought 1-0 victory. Holmdel lost to Bernards, 1-0 in last year’s Group II final. “Zach is a very dangerous player,” Holmdel head coach John Nacarlo said. “He has good ball control and great speed.” Playing without Nick King, Holmdel’s defense allowed only two shots by West Deptford. King broke his toe in the sectional final win over Long Branch. Holmdel goalkeeper, Mitch Wailer, picked up his school record 16th shutout of the season and didn’t have to make a save to do so. Wailer is one of the top goalies in the state and he allowed only one goal in the Central Jersey Group II tournament against Delran. “Mitch has really done a great job for us and he made some key saves in the CJ Group II quarterfinal game against North Plainfield,” Nacarlo said. Dylan Chapman also had a great game for the Hor-

nets and made the key play in regulation when he chased down West Deptford’s Evan Fahey on a breakaway. “Dylan has been clutch for us all season and our defense played really well,” Nacarlo said. West Deptford also did a solid job defensively by double teaming Bond and didn’t allow Holmdel to score a goal during regulation time. “For the most part they were getting five to six guys back behind the ball most of the game,” Nacarlo said. Bond then ended up scoring the only goal of the game just two minutes into overtime to give the Hornets a thrilling win. “Zach has had a bunch of game-winners late during this run of ours and he’s just a goal scorer,” Nacarlo said. On Dec. 1st at The College of New Jersey, Holmdel faced the Newton Braves in the Group II final. The Braves defeated the Cliffside Park Red Raiders, 2-1 to become the first soccer team (boys or girls) ever from Sussex County to advance to a state final. The Hornets ended up losing to the Braves, 3-1 to finish their season with a 21-3 record. Holmdel’s lone goal was scored by Jack Flanagan. “We knew coming into the game that Newton had two midfielders that are very strong and that they like to keep possession of the ball,” Nacarlo said.

On Wednesday, November 21, 2012 in Holmdel Park, the Rumson-Fair Haven Girls Cross Country team took 4th place at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions. The top-ranked Voorhees won the competition with 74 points, followed by Hillsborough (133 points) and West Morris Mendham (180 points). RFH finished with 202 points in the twenty-team competition. The top six teams won medals, which were presented by U.S. Olympian Julie Culley. RFH junior, Jacqueline Gottuso, led the RFH team in 19:21, the 35th fastest time in a field of 176 runners. “Jacqueline has been our top runner this year and her time was the 3rd fastest time in RFH history,” said coach Tim McLoone. Also scoring for the team were sophomore, Fini Satzke (19:54), junior, Courtney Howley (20:02), junior, Megan Hellman (20:09), and freshman, Emily Hellman (20:34). “Emily was our all-important #5,” said McLoone, “which was remarkable because she missed a few weeks of training due to a broken wrist.” Rounding out the team were senior captains, Isabella Maita and Michaella Irvine.

Congratulations on a Great Fall Season I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our fine scholar-athletes and their coaches for an extraordinary launch into the Shore Conference in this inaugural fall season of athletic competition. We have celebrated many victories in the spirit of athletic camaraderie and competition. Although not always victorious, the character of play and the heart that our athletes showed on the court and field will prove to be the winning combination for other season athletes to follow; congratulations! Overall, we have had an outstanding fall season and I applaud our athletes for continuing Ranney’s tradition of athletic excellence. I credit the success of our programs to the talent and skill of our athletes and also to the leadership of our great coaching staff. Our athletes flourish under their exceptional guidance. Our coaches invest time and energy into inspiring our scholar-athletes, and I know their dedication and passion for their sport and their team is fully appreciated by the entire Ranney community. Each child deserves opportunities to make the most of his or her innate potential. As history shows, Ranney’s Athletic programs make it possible for children to pursue excellence at ever-higher levels. Every Ranney student has created a cherished memory inside the Gerhard Pavilion for Athletics: on the athletic fields and courts and in the Walling Aquatics Center. The athletic programs that come through the GPA continue to house the hopes and dreams of our future athletes, and I am confident that they will continue to bring honor to Ranney School.
gratulations go out to our varsity tennis team and Coach, Christel Contrera, as these talented young ladies captured Ranney’s first Shore Conference, “B” Central Championship. The team concluded the season with an outstanding 11-4 record to go along with their Division Championship; congratulations Panthers!
The boys’ varsity soccer team finished with a final record of 7 – 9 – 1 on the season. Our first year in the Shore Conference was an outstanding success as we not only triumphed over local teams such as Henry Hudson High and Point Pleasant Beach, but even in our losses the competition was fierce. In fact, six of our nine losses were within one goal and three of those went into overtime. Clearly, we have been matched well with other teams; and as the new kids on the block, our boys showed other teams that we are competitors and we are here to stay – and win! Anyone who watched the Point Pleasant Beach overtime game on the Ranney campus witnessed exactly why we joined the Shore Conference. The girls’ varsity soccer team was tested in the new league but had a successful year. Having joined the Shore Conference the team found themselves working hard to step up to a new level of competition. Despite some tough losses early in the season, the girls never let up and continued to work hard ending the season by winning three of the last five games for a final record of four wins and ten losses. The girls’ showed continued improvement with every practice and game. With 15 players returning, 2013 shows great promise for our girls’ soccer program.
was committed to achieving success. Team members were confident in their skills and never let intimidation rule. Ranney qualified for the NJSIAA State Tournament for the second consecutive year. Despite losing in the first round, there is much to be proud of. The team had its most successful season in the program's history, finishing with an overall record of 7-7-1. While all of this is a tremendous accomplishment, none of it would have been possible without hard work, dedication, and teamwork. The varsity cross country team had a season of growth. With a core group comprised of freshmen and sophomores, and no seniors, the team spent the season developing their competitive skills. From the beginning to the end of the season, the boys’ team whittled a combined 38 minutes off their personal records, while the girls cut 23 minutes from their best times. For our boys’ team, Marc Owitz ’14 led the way for most of the meets, followed closely by Dean Parker ’16, who moved into first at season’s end. The girls finished 2-3, led by Madison Boyan ’14.
The Growing Crew Program The varsity crew team enjoyed a new “home” on the Shrewsbury River this fall. Our rowers rowed out of the Shrewsbury Sailing and
Yacht Club, and it was a tremendous advantage for our team to have such wonderful facilities. The entire rowing program took a huge step forward during the fall season as team members remained committed to becoming the best rowers possible. The excitement that Coach Repoli and Coach Prown brought to the river each day inspired these young rowers to excel. The spring season promises to be one to remember. A special thank you goes out to Mr. John Crilly (Kate ’16, Jack ’19, and Tara ’20) for assisting us in securing the new rowing site and for all of his much-appreciated assistance during the season. I would once again like to thank the following members of the Ranney community for the support of the Crew Program as the success of becoming our own entity comes directly from the generous support: Mr. Eric Abraham and Mrs. Regina Carroll ( Jordan ’21), Dr. Stephen Dudick and Dr. Catherine Dudick (Petra ’25), Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hesslein ( Jordan ’13), Dr. and Mrs. M. Michael Jones (Siobhan ’21, Gavin ’25), Ms. Carol Martin, Dr. and Mrs. Mohamed E. Meleis (Ahmed ’04, Dalia ’07, Yasmin ’12, Mostafa ’14), Mr. and Mrs. Paul Nicholson (Jessica ’14, Maxwell ’20), Mr. and Mrs. Markos Parlamas (George ‘10 , Steven ’14), Dr. and Mrs. Brian Torpey (McCall ’11, Kendall ’13, Matthew ’17, Jack ’18) and Dr. and Mrs. Scott Woska (Evan ’21, Jason ’24).

MIDDLETOWN SOUTH STUNS COLTS NECK WITH OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION COLTS NECK – It was days like this that Eagle head coach, Steve Antonucci, could only dream about when he made the decision to switch to a spread offense for this year’s team. “To be honest with you, I can’t remember us ever getting this many yards, not while I’ve been here,” said Antoucci.
play very well the last game and that fired us up. We were more focused and prepared for this game, the line played awesome.” When asked what the difference was between the two games, Antonucci glowingly responded, “It all goes back to practice, you win games in practice. Our kids went to work this week. Nobody likes to be embarrassed, we were embarrassed by the way we played the last time; we needed to come in here today and play our hearts out, I think we accomplished that.”
After being held to 11 first downs and 215 total yards in their week nine 28-9 loss to Colts Neck, Middletown South (8-3) erupted for 24 first downs, 285-yards rushing, and 302-yards passing for 587 total yards in a 45-35 payback victory over the Cougars (9-2) Saturday at Colts Neck, in a Central Jersey Group 4 semifinal game. With the win, Middletown South returns to the State Sectional Finals after a year absence and hopes to win its first Sectional Championship game since 2006, when it defeated Moorestown 38-0 for the Central Jersey Group III Crown.
After the Cougars went ahead 7-0, South scored touchdowns on their next four possessions and Colts Neck was forced to play catch up football the entire game. Every time Colts Neck scored, South would respond with a score.
The Cougars closed the gap to 31-23 with four minutes to play in the third quarter on junior running back, Anthony Garguio’s, 13-yard Three South players had highlight reel type two touchdowns including a 78-yarder, while run, but three minutes later Eli Smith scored games on a day where everything seemed to junior quarterback, Kyle Brey, was 21-28 for on a 1-yard run to cap a 9-play, 71-yard drive. work. Freehold Boro's Three-peat By Eric Braun Jackson - With all the great athletes and team accomplishments throughout the years in the Shore Conference Gymnastics Tournament, Freehold Borough has become the first team to post three straight SCT Championship runs. The Colonials brought home their third straight title this year with a score of 110.90. The Colonials got extra motivation on the bus ride over when they found out that no one has ever won three consecutive titles. Senior, Jennifer King, said, "We knew we could do it and this was just extra motivation for the girls." The Colonials would hold off a surging Ocean Township squad with impressive displays both on floor exercises and balance beams. King would lead the way for Freehold with her leadership and would end the competition Second Place in All-Around, Balance Beam and Floor. Jenna Crisalli would finish the competition for Freehold with Third in the All-Around and First in the Floor Exercise. When asked about the 3-peat record, coach Katie Puzs stated, "Once we realized that no one had ever done this before, we made that our goal. We did not set a scoring goal for today, we knew we could get it done and get the win." It was the dominating performances of both King and Crisalli on the balance beam that pulled the Colonials away from the rest of the field. King earned a score of 9.45 and Crisalli topped her teammate when she recorded a score of 9.625. This season was one of the more challenging years for the Colonials gymnastics program and Coach Pusz. Freehold Borough lost their gymnasium before the season and were riddled with injuries early on, but once again Freehold Boro was able to pull together as a unit and put together another dream season. The Colonials finish #1 in the Shore, #2 in the NJSIAA Tournament and individual NJSIAA All-Around, Balance Beam and Uneven Bars Third Place winner in Jennifer King and NJSIAA Third Place Floor Exercise in Jenna Crisalli.

The Shore Regional girls soccer team just finished a fantastic season, but came up just short of winning the first girls soccer sectional title in school history. The Blue devils finished with a record of 16-7-1 and reached the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I Championship . In what was a fiercely fought battle all day, the Blue Devil’s came up short on the scoreboard by the score of 2 to 0 to Glenn Ridge. Shore Regional put pressure on the Glenn Ridge goalie the whole game and outshot Glenn ridge 10 to 6, but they just couldn’t tally a goal. Amanda Olsen made 6 saves in goal for the Blue Devil’s while Glenn Ridge got a goal in the first half by Victoria Finley and a second half goal by Paige Smith.
each other in the first half. The first goal came when Caroline Slater scored off of a corner kick from the left side that made it into the corner of the net without touching another player, giving the Blue Devils a 1 to 0 lead at the 25:52 mark of the first half. At the 29:22 mark of the first half, Julia Leubs played a great ball at the goal line and Sam McDonough finished the goal in the left corner of the net giving the Blue devils a 2 to 0 lead. Haddon Heights was able to score one goal in the second half, but Shore Regional goalie, Amanda Olsen, preserved the 2 to 1 victory by making 10 saves in goal and sending the Blue Devils to their first state sectional title.
In their semi-final game in the state sectional, the Blue Devils defeated Haddon Heights (19-4-1) by the score of 2 to1. Shore Regional scored two goals within minutes of
In winning the school’s second sectional title, the Blue devils defeated Metuchen (18-3-1) by the score of 5 to 1. Five different players scored for Shore Regional with Sam McDonough, Caroline Slater, Lauren Britton, Julia Leubs, Claudia Lamarca, and Gabrielle Russo all scoring goals. McDonough also added 2 assissts and Slater added 1 assist.

The Shore Regional football team is having an excellent season and have earned a chance to play for the school’s sixth State Championship. The Blue Devils easily defeated Asbury Park by the score of 31 to 7 to advance to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I championship. Shore Regional will play Florence (10- 1) who defeated Point Beach by the score of 17 to 14 in the other semi final. In the second meeting of these two teams this season (Shore defeated Asbury Park 37 to 12 earier this season) Shore Regional dominated on both sides of the ball from start to finish. Mark Costantino rushed for 122 yards and 4 touchdowns on offense and the defense held the Blue bishops to just 129 total yards of offense. Shore Regional started quickly on their first drive of the game when on their third play from scrimmage, Costantino went 59 yards on a running play giving the Blue Devils a 7 to 0 lead. After an Asbury Park fumble Shore Regional went ahead 10 to 0 on a Jake Montero 25 yard field goal. Asbury Park’s only score of the game came on a 15 play 80 yard drive that ended in a Robert Barkdale 7 yard touchdown pass to Jaquele Goodman making the score 10 to 7. Shore Regional came right back with a drive of their own and Costantino scored his second touchdown of the game on a 4 yard touchdown run making the score 17 to 7 after another Montero extra point.

Starting the second half, the Shore Regional defense forced another three and out and took control of the ball at the Asbury Park 49-yard line. Six plays later, Costantino scored again this time on a 24 yard touchdown run making the score 24 to 7 after another Montero extra point. Early in the fourth quarter, with Shore Regional in control, Costantino scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 3 yard touchdown run. The score came at the end of a 10 play 71 yard drive and made the final score Shore Regional 31 and Asbury Park 7. Head coach Mark Costantino Sr. will be going for his third state title as head coach and Shore Regional will be looking for some revenge against Florence who they lost to in the playoffs last season. Coach Costantino said, " Our kids will be ready and we will have to play our best game as Florence is a talented and physical team".

MANALAPAN ADVANCES TO SECOND CONSECUTIVE STATE FINAL WITH SCHOOL RECORD ELEVENTH WIN

By Mike Ready@getmready
MANALAPAN – Number one seed Manalapan’s big play defense and junior running back, Tyler Leonetti’s, game clinching 55 yard touchdown scamper with 1:39 remaining in the game was the difference Friday night as the Braves defeated number four seed Hunterdon Central 17-7 in a hard fought NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 5 semifinal game.
Manalapan answered with a 10 play, 69yard drive to tie the score at seven, 13 seconds into the second quarter. Tyler Leonetti (22-179 yrds.) capped the drive with a 13-yard scoring dash around left end for the score. Junior fullback, Rivera Nelson, and senior offensive lineman, Alex Salzman, paved the way with crunching down field blocks.
With the record breaking win, the Braves (11-0, 6-0) advance to the finals for the second year in a row with a chance to avenge last year’s loss to Sayreville in the finals, and to bring home the school’s first state sectional championship and an undefeated season. After the game head coach, Ed Gurrieri, addressed his team. “There’s one more brick left, you were there last year, and you’re going back. This is what it’s all about; this is why you work out in January and the heat of the summer. We’re going into this game to put the final brick into the wall.”
On the Red Devils ensuing possession, Braves junior safety Saeed Blacknail intercepted junior quarterback. Michael Knight, at the 50-yard line, returning it to the their 40-yard line.

Roberto’s Three TD Passes Your Relief To Is Win Here. Lead Bulldogs By Mike Ready RUMSON –Rumson/Fair Haven (RFH) (6-0) ranked sixth in the Shore, put an abrupt halt to Class B Southleading Monsignor Donovan’s (4-2) four-game winning streak, with a dominating 30-0 non-divisional win Friday night at Borden Stadium. Senior Danny Roberto (9-for-13 for 103 yards) tossed three touchdown passes, giving him 12 touchdown passes for the year. Roberto once again directed an efficient run- first, pass-second spread-offense. “I don’t think we’ve reached anywhere near our potential,” said Roberto after the game. According to RFH Head Coach Shane Fallon the loss of 26 seniors from last year’s class and Roberto’s leadership has been invaluable. “It’s not just on the stat sheet, it’s the way he works with the kids in practice and the way he picks them up after they’ve made a mistake; his patience is remarkable. Having Roberto is like having an extra coach out there. He’s a very special player and person for us,” explained Fallon. On the Bulldogs second possession of the game; they drove 64 yards in eight plays with most the yardage coming from sophomore running back Charlie Volker, including a 17- yard touchdown run. Volker rushed for 67 yards on seven carries on the night, all in the first half, as the Bulldogs pounded out 216 yards on the ground in the game. Monsignor Donovan punted on their next possession and RFH took over at their own 17-yard line. Roberto promptly engineered an efficient nine
play, 83-yard drive, capping it off with a 21-yard strike to senior wide receiver John Ryan to make it 14-0 with 8:57 left in the half. The Bulldogs drove to the two-yard line in the closing seconds of the first half, but a holding penalty negated a two-yard touchdown run by Dylan Zohn and they had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by junior placekicker Jake D’Amelio for a 17-0 halftime lead. On the first play of the second half, RFH senior defensive back Addison Nitto intercepted Monsignor Donovan quarterback Vinny Grasso at the 50yard line and returned the ball 31 yards to the Bulldog 19-yard line. Five plays later, Roberto lofted a perfect five-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Sam Shaud for a 24-0 lead. Roberto put the game out of reach with 5:52 left in the third quarter by connecting with senior wide out Denis O’Sullivan for an 11-yard corner fade touchdown and 30-0 advantage. The extra point was blocked. The Bulldog defense played an incredible game in shutting down the Griffins’ high- powered triple- option attack, holding the Griffins to 50-yards rushing on 30 attempts and 110 total yards. “Grasso is a great athlete and he runs the triple option to perfection. Our defensive line and linebackers contained and played assignment football with tremendous support from our secondary,” said Fallon after the game. “We’re a good team. We have a chance to be a great team, but we’re not there yet. We’re getting there. I hope to peek right around playoff time.”

Mater Dei Soccer Ends Strong Season By Jim Hintelmann MIDDLETOWN TOWNSHIP Although its girls soccer season ended in a 3-0 loss to NJSIAA Non Public B finalist St. Rose, in the South Jersey sectional finals, Mater Dei Prep still finished with a solid 11-7-3 record despite starting seven sophomores and a freshman.

COLTS NECK— The Colts Neck girls’ soccer team caught fire at the right time of year. The Cougars (14-7-1) entered the postseason as the 8th seed in the Central Jersey Group III bracket, but made a surprising run all the way to the sectional final. It all began with a 3-2 victory over 9th seeded Middletown South in the first round. The game was tied 2-2 until the 79th minute when Amanda Visco scored what would be the eventual game-winner. Alison Russo and Danielle Krachie also had goals for the Cougars.
the game. Keeper, Lauren Zborovancik, was superb in net with seven saves.
In the second round, Colts Neck took on top seeded, Freehold Boro (15-2-2). The Colonials were also ranked the 11th best team in New Jersey by the Star Ledger. Alison Russo scored the go-ahead goal to a break 1-1 tie in the second half as the Cougars stunned Freehold Boro 2-1. It was Russo’s second goal of
The magical run ended with a 1-0 loss to 2nd seeded Princeton in the CJ Group III final. The Tigers scored a first-half goal and Colts Neck could never solve goalkeeper Laura Ullmann. Despite the loss, the Cougars showed how playing your best soccer late in the season can lead to great achievements.
The next round meant a match-up with another familiar Shore Conference foe. The Cougars faced 5th seeded Wall Township and the defense shined once again. The defense combined with an eight-save effort by Zborovancik shut out the Crimson Knights and earned Colts Neck a 1-0 win. Amanda Visco scored the game’s lone goal on an assist from Danielle Krachie.
Although a young team, Mater Dei Prep coach, James Gelpke, was still expecting a good season with eight returning starters from last year’s team that won its first sectional championship in the school’s history, despite going into the tournament as the last seed with a 5-13 record. “We had a lot of talent back,” said Gelpke, “St. Rose had a great player in Lauren Gates. She’s very talented and makes goals happen.” Mater Dei Prep’s record is all the more impressive because the Seraphs played a rugged schedule. It was third in the A Central behind Shore and St. Rose. Both of these teams made the state finals in their respective Groups. “Four of the last six Shore teams in the tournament: Mater Dei Prep, Shore, St. Rose and Point Beach were from our division,” said Gelpke .”Three of our losses were to St. Rose.” Mater Dei Prep’s biggest wins were over division champion Shore Regional and Middletown South, but the Seraphs also had a near upset when it lost to Brick Memorial in a shootout. “We lost on penalty shots,” Gelpke said. “But I think that we outplayed them”
Leading the way for the Seraphs were sophomores, Lindsey Florio and Julia McCarthy, both of whom scored nine goals. Another capable scorer was senior, Erin Shaw, with five goals. The defense, though, was the strength of the team with goalie, Katie Viscardi, recording nine shutouts and 96 saves. Other solid defenders were sweeper, Mary Carroll, perhaps the top allaround player on the team, and backs, Brooke Trotter, Kristen McGauhey and Teresa Osborns. Although mostly an underclass team, Mater Dei Prep still had a good core of seniors with Jordan Donahue, Meghan Begley, Catherine Cahill and Kerriam Ward. “We should be good the next two years,” said Gelpke, “and we are a player or two away from being a very good team.”

Green Wave Doubles Up on Matawan LONG BRANCH— The conventional wisdom in football is that it can be more difficult to beat an opponent a second time in the same season. In the case of Long Branch versus Matawan, the Green Wave found ways to improve upon their earlier victory and garner a more decisive win in the second meeting. After defeating the Huskies 24-21 three weeks earlier, Long Branch had to face them again in the opening round of the Central Jersey Group III playoffs. The first meeting was a back-and-forth battle with sophomore, Vincent Mota, drilling a 34-yard field goal as time expired for the win. Deon Williams caught an 82-yard touchdown pass from Avry Griffin in the first half and ran for a 7-yard score in the third quarter. The second meeting figured to be another barn-burner with both offenses dueling for another round, this time with the season on the line in the state playoffs, but Long Branch made defensive adjustments that flipped the script. They held Matawan to less than 200 yards of total offense and came away with a 26-3 victory. Deon Williams had a 35-yard receiving touchdown and quarterback, Avry Griffin, scrambled for a 68-yard touchdown. The defense, which stifled the Huskies offense, also got into the scoring action with defensive end, Hunter Baillie, returning an interception 16 yards for a touchdown.
On Thanksiving, Long Branch beat Red Bank Regional 13-0. Running back Dwight Clark returned from a season long ankle injury to run for a touchdown on the first drive of the game. They held the Bucs to under 100 yards of total offense. The Green Wave clinched a share of the Class B North Division title In the CJ Group III semifinals last week, Long Branch fell 7-0 to Nottingham. The Green Wave finished the season with a 9-2 record.

Magical Season for Point Beach CBA Running Wild By Michael Rogers Comes to End Year in and year old the Christian runners finished in the second By Kevin Davis
The Point Pleasant Beach Garnet Gulls (10-1) had their undefeated 2012 campaign ended in the NJSIAA Central Group I semifinal on Friday night, November 30, with a 17-14 setback at the hands of the Florence Flashes (10-1). The game remained tight throughout, with neither team taking more than a single possession lead. Point Beach opened the scoring early in the first quarter when quarterback, Jake Fioretti, found running back, Andre Cochran, for a 16-yard touchdown strike, giving the Garnet Gulls a 6-0 lead that they were unable to add an extra two points to. Florence answered Point Beach’s score early in the second when fullback Curtis Thompson found the end zone from two yards out. The ensuing extra point gave Florence a 7-6 lead.
for much of the third quarter before Fioretti threw a game-changing interception to Eric Chapman, who took the errant pass 33 yards the other way, a prelude to a Doug McArthur extra point that negated Point Beach’s advantage. McArthur’s leg would put points on the board again midway through the fourth quarter with what turned out to be a game-winning 33-yard field goal. The Garnet Gulls had one final drive in them, working their way from their own 25 with less than three minutes left to the red zone in the game’s waning seconds. But when a scrambling Fioretti was brought down about ten yards shy of the end zone, time ran out on Point Beach. “Florence is a great program with numerous titles in Central Jersey group I,” Point Beach coach John Wagner said of his team’s opponents before kickoff. “(They represent) a more than formidable opponent.”
The Garnet Gulls answered and took the biggest lead either team held in the game when Fioretti connected with Nick Fiore on a 26-yard touchdown pass. A Kyle Samaritano run tacked on two With the win, Florence will meet more points, giving Point Beach Shore Regional, whom the Garthe 14-7 lead it took into halftime. net Gulls defeated on Thanksgiving, in next weekend’s sectional Point Beach maintained its lead final.
Brothers Academy cross country team is one of the best in the state and this year’s team is the number one ranked team in the state, but they are also having success on the national level. They have won 24 state titles, which includes the last 3 years in a row. They have also won 18 Meet of Champions which includes the last 3 years in a row. They are also the defending Nike Nationals champions, which is held every year in Portland, Oregon. This year the Colts are once again having a fantastic season. They are ranked as the number one team in the state and they have already captured another Meet of Champions title and another Non Public Group A Championship.
through sixth positions in capturing their record 24th straight state title and their third in a row. CBA became the Northeast qualifier for the Nike Nationals with a top score of 73 points. Jack Boyle ran a time of 15:57 with Billy Bragg running a time of 16:14. Mike Clemmons was right behind him and ran a time of 16:18. The Colts will now participate in the Nike Nationals in Portland, Oregon and they go into the meet as the defending champions. If past history has been any indication, the Colts from Christian Brothers Academy will have success once again.
In this year’s Meet of Champions, the Colts had to handle a different opponent. Due to Hurricane Sandy CBA had to run three races in eight days so coach Tom Heath knew he wouldnt be able to use his best runners in all three races. He decided to rest his top five runners yet the result was still the same as CBA still won the event with seven runners notching their personal best times. The Colts finished with the top score of 110 points with Aaron Liberatore leading the Colts with a time of 16:17. In the Non Public Group A State Final the colts defeated Don Bosco by the score of 29 to 60. CBA
