Red Bank Regional Looks To Take The Next Step Page 2 Jersey Sporting News • September 4 - September 25

By Jim Hintelmann LITTLE SILVER — Red Bank Regional's (RBR) football fortunes reached a low point from 2005-2009 when the Bucs went 5-44 but, in that last year, a very talented group of freshmen arrived and produced an unbeaten (9-0) record. Hardly unexpected, that team set the stage for a revival of the Buc program which saw the Bucs go 5-5 last year and make the NJSIAA playoffs for the first time since 2004. Those players are seniors now and the Bucs appear ready to take the next step and achieve a possible winning record and a championship. "The offense is starting to come together and is improving with each scrimmage," said Buc Head Coach Nick Giglio.who has six returning starters on offense and will utilize the Wing T. We have a good running game and will use a lot of play action." The Bucs have a solid backfield with tailbacks Tajhi Tomaino, Jahimere Hinton and fullback Dylan Stambaugh but the quarterback position is up for grabs between Alex Fox and Ross Gisondi. "Both of them will get playing time,"said Giglio. "They are looking good in practice." In the secondary will be cornerbacks Mario Williams and William Nowglows and Gisondi and Tomaino at safety. "We've had injuries to Stambaugh and Hinton in the pre-season, but we have a lot of speed and experience. We're playing in B North this year, which is known as the Black and Blue Division," said Giglio. RBR has a tough opener Sept 8 when it plays host to rival Red Bank Catholic.

Matawan Football Wants Winning Tradition In New Era Page 4 Jersey Sporting News • September 4 - September 25

By Mike Ready With the retirement of legendary Head Coach Joe Marrucci, John Kaye has some big shoes to fill as the new head coach. But, as an assistant coach at Matawan for the past18 years, Kaye is expecting a smooth transition. “I’ve been here a long time and I know this program. I’ve coached half of our assistant coaches; we’ll be fine.” The Huskies have been to the state finals the last three seasons under Marrucci, winning the state championship last year and in 2009. Kaye sees no reason this year’s team can’t compete for a title. “We play a physical brand of football; we feel that puts us in a position to win.” Matawan shifts to the B North Division this year, and according to Kaye, “It’s a much more physical league; they play our style of ball. It’s been labeled the Black and Blue Division. We’ll be reunited with some of our old rivals.” Once again, the Huskies defense will dictate just how far they go. They’ll be led by senior middle linebacker Dan Incle and senior linebacker/strong safety Glenn Cross. Junior Nick Tompkins returns to strong-side linebacker/defensive end, while senior John Alston and newcomer Lameen Spann compete at weak-side linebacker. The defensive line has two returning starters in junior defensive tackle Doug Weber and senior defensive end

Key Matawan players are Larry Alston III (11 ) , A n t h o n y C a s t e n e d a ( 8 2 ) , Matt Morenz (72), Solomon Simpkins (22) and Cassius Wi l l i a m s ( 2 ) .

linebacker, with senior Olajuwon Thomas and Junior Juan Gonzalez also at safety. Juniors Jordon Pisano and freshman Kahill Haskins are the corners. Two- year starter Kashaun Barnes is back at quarterback and will be counted on for his leadership. Cross lines up at the ‘A’ back position, while Alston, Gonzalez and Incle will all get playing time in the three- back system. Tompkins is back at tight end, with returning starting senior Shawn Johnson lining up at wide out. Thomas and sophomore Chris Solomon will backup. The Huskies will return three starters on the offensive line; Weldon at right tackle, Samad Thomas at left tackle and Veary at the center position. Veteran defensive lineman Doug Weber will start at right guard and newcomer junior Brandon Murphy gets the start at left guard. Third Team All-Shore kicker, Mike Creamer is back and will handle the punting duties as well this year. According to Kaye, Creamer is one of the most valuable players on the team given the way he dictates field position.

Bulldogs Reloading, Not Rebuilding

Page 6 Jersey Sporting News • September 4 - September 25

By Michael Rogers The Rumson/Fair Haven (RFH) high school football team will be looking to return to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II playoffs this season. After winning the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II title in 2010, the Bulldogs returned to the title game again last season but lost in a tough defensive battle against Matawan with the final score of 3- 0. Head Coach Shane Fallon has lost 26 players from last year's team to graduation. and that was a team that finished with a 10 -2 season and won the Central A Division title by going undefeated in the division (5 - 0). This year's team will still feature 18 seniors and many underclassmen who have some varsity playing experience under their belt. For this reason Coach Fallon leads his team with the motto, “we do not rebuild, we reload”. Standout players for Rumson/Fair Haven are Danny Roberto, Travis Clark and On offense, the Bulldogs Wa l s h . return quarterback Dan Roberto and he has some of his back will be Conor Walsh and Travis who Coach Fallon feels will earn favorite targets at receiver returning Clarke. Up front on the offensive some playing time are Melquan as well. Seniors John Ryan, Sam line Andy Biarnetta, Gunnar Tilly, Reevey, John Oaks and Sam Shaud both return as does two-year Dan Wojciehowski and Joe Flippo Eisenstadt. On defense, this year's team will starting tight end Henry Rosenburg. all return and all have varsity playing Carrying the ball for RFH at running experience. Some underclassmen need to play well if they are to match

the 59 total points last year's defense gave up in 12 games. The defense last season gave up an average of less than seven points per game. Travis Clarke will return and anchor the defense at linebacker along with J.P. Jennings and Tom Martello. On the defensive line John Greely, Dan Morea, Don Bedell, Kevin Clayton and Connor Phillips all return to form a solid defensive front. In the defensive secondary Mike Clarke, Chris Hubler and brothers Addison and Davis Nitto all return. The Bulldogs also return a strong kicking game as Jake D’Amelio returns to handle all kickoff and field goal duties as well as punting. Coach Fallon is aware of the talent that graduated last season but he also tells this year's team to work hard and to build their own identity. Fallon said, “ We strive to be competitive each week and Conor improve as the season progresses. If we can achieve that in the regular season and stay healthy then we will be ready for the playoffs”. The Bulldogs open their season at home against a tough Group I team in Shore Regional High School.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Manalapan is fresh off two straight Central Jersey Group IV Final appearances. They return quarterback Mike Isabella and stud receiver Anthony Firkser. Their 2,000 yard running back John Sieczkowski graduated, but the defense returns largely intact. Middletown South is poised to challenge for first place and they host the Braves on September 28th. Colts Neck, Howell and Middletown North will likely fight for playoff spots, however, it is possible that only two of the three will make it. RBC is the clear favorite despite

losing several key players to graduation. The Caseys have so much depth and talent that even those losses will not be too much to overcome. RFH, SJV, and Manasquan are all capable of a second place finish. The Bulldogs graduated the most successful senior class in school history. SJV could take a big step forward in Coach Andy Carlstrom’s second season. The Lancers finished last season strong including a win over state champion Matawan. Manasquan and Raritan both have something to prove offensively with the Warriors losing graduated QB Tyler Saito and the Rockets moving to a spread attack. Continued on page 8

PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH: Southern Regional Lacey Brick Township Jackson Memorial TR North Brick Memorial TR East TR South

WHAT TO EXPECT: Southern Regional has more than 20 seniors back including QB Dan Higgins and most of the offensive line. They appear to be the early favorite. Lacey had a down year in 2011, but returns Kyle Spatz at running back and a resurgent offense. Brick Township and Jackson Memorial each lost key players in QB Brandon Kieslor and RB Brandon Winston. TR North has some key skill players such as WR Joey Fields and could return to the postseason. Brick Memorial lost several games by less than a touchdown last season and could easily reverse that trend. TR East and TR South have some talent to compete, but might be another year away from playoff contention. Class B North

Injuries have hindered Long Branch’s ranking. Star running back Dwight Clark has a broken ankle and is out until October. Dom Mincieli is recovering from an ACL tear suffered in the spring and might miss a few of the opening games. Ocean could rise up the standings because they can keep games close. This division is pretty wide open and it would be no surprise if these predictions are wildly off by November.

PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH: Barnegat Point Boro Monsignor Donovan Lakewood Central Jackson Libert y Manchester Pinelands

WHAT TO EXPECT: Barnegat will offset graduation losses with transfers. QB Cinjun Erskine transfers in from Holy Spirit. He will take advantage of a veteran offensive line and star receiver Pat Moran. Chris Oliphant takes the reigns at QB for Point Boro who should challenge for the division title. Monsignor Donovan is under the radar despite a host of returning players and standout lineman Brad Henson. Lakewood has some excellent skill players and quarterback Tyrice Beverette is one of the best in the state. Central no longer has graduated running back Kalyph Hardy who led the Shore Conference in touchdowns in 2011. Junior quarterback Marcus Drumwright will take on the pressure of replacing Hardy’s offensive production. Jackson Liberty will rely on their big guys for more of a power game this season. Manchester has almost an entirely new team, similar to Pinelands last year. The Wildcats return a handful of players, but are coming off an 0-10 campaign.

Blue Bishops Working Hard Jersey Sporting News • September 4 - September 25

By Michael Rogers The Asbury Park high school football team is coming off of a season where they finished with a 10 -2 record. They also won the Central Jersey Group I Championship. In the championship game, the Blue Bishops defeated Florence by the score of 42 - 18. Head Coach Matt Ardizzone knows that even though Asbury Park lost some key players to graduation he has players on his roster that can develop into fine football players. According to Ardizzone, “Even though we lost a lot of skilled players, if we prepare and work hard we will be ready for the season”. The Blue Bishops' strength is on their offensive and defensive lines as well as the quarterback position where Robert Barksdale returns to run the offense. Some other returning players include: Domingo Perez who will start along the offensive and defensive lines, Jaquele Goodman returns at defensive back and wide receiver along with Nicholas Famularo who returns at linebacker and tight end. One of the key players that Coach Ardizzone needs to develop isSteven Nonez who plays on the offensive line. Speedster Daquane BlandBennett who plays running back and defensive back as well as Imire Strohman and Kadar Johnson are both developing at linebacker and wide receiver. Asbury Park will start the season against Keyport which Coach

While those plays gain the most attention, the guys in the trenches are the ones who do the dirty work that makes the difference between a win and a loss. This year in the Shore Conference, two of the top players are linemen and it’s time to give them a share of the spotlight. Monsignor Donovan offensive lineman Brad Henson and Red Bank Regional (RBR) defensive end/linebacker Garrett Sickels are both Division-1, Bowl Championship Series school commits. Henson is the anchor on the Monsignor Donovan offensive line. He is fresh off a junior campaign in which he was a 2nd-Team All-Shore selection and a 1st-Team All-Ocean County pick. A fouryear starter, Henson is going to play a key role for the Griffins who are hoping for a banner season. “I’ve never been more excited. Our offensive line is coming together very well,” said Henson. “I love playing the line. At my size, it’s the only sport where I feel like I can contribute and go out and play physical.” After the 2012-2013 school year,

Red Bank Regional (RBR) defensive end/linebacker Garrett Sickels and Monsignor Donovan offensive lineman Brad Henson.

Henson will be off to the University of Virginia on a full football scholarship. He felt comfortable with the coaching

staff and saw the Cavaliers teammates as being close like a family. “There wasn’t a better fit for academics either, ”

explained Henson. “On the field, my Oline coach said they will try me at a few different spots to possibly play early.” While Henson heads to the ACC, RBR’s Garrett Sickels will move on to the Big Ten for college. Sickels is a firm commit to Penn State despite the sanctions placed on the school by the NCAA. “When I committed, I committed to a new era of Penn State. I love the coaching staff and I want to be a part of it,” Sickels said. “The coaches stressed a lot that our recruiting class can come in and lead. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson is a great coach and it’s something to be excited about.” Sickels is all set for his college plans, so his focus for now is on getting RBR back to the playoffs for a third straight year. He is coming off a 2011 season in which he had 76 tackles (9 for loss), 11 sacks and three blocked kicks (one for a TD). “We have set the bar high,” said Sickels. “We want to keep building and we’re happy we got to states the last two years, but we want to be better than 5-5 and go further.” With the leadership and talent of Henson and Sickels, Monsignor Donovan and RBR could be in for special seasons. After all, having a strong offensive and defensive line are the two most important ingredients needed for a winning season.

Monmouth Regional Falcons Look to Farrah

Jeff Farah practicing at quarterback for Monmouth Regional.

By Brian Daneman Most people don’t know him but if you do you can’t help but root for a young man like Jeff Farrah. He is old school right down to the crew cut and high tops. He looks you in the eye when he speaks to you and he is an absolute leader on and off the field both. Last year, Farrah was taken off the field in a stretcher during the Freehold game with an ankle injury and he was told by doctors that he would probably be out at least four to five weeks. Two weeks later, Farrah limped out onto the field against powerhouse Rumson/Fair Haven (RFH) and threw a touchdown pass on the very first series. For Farrah, starting at quarterback the last two years for Monmouth Regional has been more than a challenge. Monmouth Regional has a very small program and they have played a brutal schedule against the likes of Long Continued on page 19

Lions Poised To Bounce Back B y Ted Kaiser LACEY— The 2011 season was an uncharacteristic one for the Lacey football program. The Lions missed the playoffs with only a 4-6 record. The struggles were not surprising given the talent graduated from the year before, but it was a steep drop from the undefeated championship season they had just experienced. On the bright side, the young, less experienced Lions gained much needed seasoning last fall. Now Lacey could be poised to return to contention for division and state titles. There is a lot of reasons to be positive beginning with quarterback Tommy Kelly who started as a sophomore. Kelly will have the luxury of a returning 1,500-yard running back in senior Kyle Spatz. Spatz is an explosive runner, as evidenced by his 247-yard, two touchdown breakout against Central. Kelly will have another weapon at wideout in senior Brandon Boos. Boos might even line up in the wildcat formation on occasion.

Page 19

Chris Tutela also returns at receiver for his junior year. Protecting Kelly and creating holes for Spatz is an offensive line with two returning starters in center Tyler Walsh and senior tackle Joe Elefante. “We feel like the addition of some new coaches and having a year of time under Kelly’s belt will help us,” explained Elefante. “Having Spatz back after a big season is also a big plus for us.” The defense looks strong for Lacey. The Lions have a mix of seniors and some potential sophomores and freshmen in their front seven. At safety, both Boos and Tutela return to add experience in the defensive backfield. Tutela also serves as the punter and might be one of the best in the Shore Conference. The Class A South Division schedule will be a tough one with Southern Regional, Brick Township, TR North and other traditionally strong programs. Lacey will be in the hunt for a division Standout players for Lacey are Christian Tutela, Kyle Spatz, Brandon Boos and title and a return to the postseason. Joe Elefante.

Branch, Neptune, Red Bank Catholic, Matawan and RFH. Last year the varsity team consisted of about 35 players and most of them were underclassmen. Head Coach Jason Morrell has done a great job with the talent he has, but the team lacks depth and numbers. This year their schedule is not quite as daunting and that should bode well for Farrah and for Monmouth Regional. At 6’0, 180lbs., Farrah is a little undersized for a potential Division I college quarterback but that may be his only negative. His right arm is a catapult and a very accurate one at that. He is well known and respected among the top players throughout the Shore Conference and for good reason. He was named top quarterback at the FBU top gun camp where his performance was nothing short of amazing in terms of passing accuracy. This past summer he was named MVP at the Elite Recruits Camp and he finished in the top six at the prestigious ESPN Select camp. He is also a potential candidate for the US Army All- American Bowl in January. Farrah has done well at so many camps over the past two summers it is hard to count, yet he hasn’t received the local recognition in part because he is playing for a rebuilding program. Farrah could have transferred to any number of schools and started for a bigger program but he has remained loyal to his school, his coach and his teammates. This young player has heart and commitment and those are things you can’t teach. This year Farrah has a couple of weapons; Sheldon McCue, a 6’2, 225 lb. physical specimen at tight end and Jose Suarez, a senior wide out with breakaway speed. Jeff Farrah and Monmouth Regional may not break any Shore Conference records this year, but don’t be surprised to see some pretty impressive numbers and hopefully a scholarship to a top tier college program come his way.
