HOWELL GRAPPLERS ADVANCE TO SCT SEMIFINALS

HOWELL – Perhaps Howell’s loss to the Phillipsburg (10-2), ranked #7 in the NJWWA Polls, last Saturday was a good thing moving forward.

You really can’t blame the Rebels (212), if maybe they were a little complacent. After all, they’d just reeled off 18 consecutive wins, were ranked fifth in the Shore and sixteenth in the State.

However, when you go up against a team as rich in wrestling heritage as Phillipsburg has, you have to be at the top of your game.

It was the kind of wakeup call that hits you on the side of the head, letting you know you have some work to do.

It was a humbling experience, time to refocus, get back to the basics and be-

ing prepared.

That’s exactly what the Rebels did, as they bounced back nicely Thursday night, defeating a determined Neptune squad, 37-23, in the Shore Conference Tournament Pre-Quarters, then handled the Shore’s sixth ranked team and No. 5 seed, Brick Township, 43-19, in the Quarterfinals.

In the Pre-Quarters, the match was tied 15-15 after six bouts. Junior, Nathan Litowsky (17-6), and sophomore, Mikey Sisolak (13-4), registered pins at 182 and 106 respectively. Junior, Steven Boncimino (18-7), added a 6-0 decision over Keysan Johnson.

match, winning six of the final eight bouts. Undefeated senior and 2012 District 21 Champion, Ben Esposito (21-0), won a major decision, 11-3, over Tareeq Hamilton. 2012 District 21 Camp, Senior, Ashanti Maurice (21-4), followed Esposito with a hard fought 4-3 decision over two-time District 23 runner-up Sekou Harris.

In the Quarterfinals, Brick Township was without two starters and forfeited three weights as Howell rolled to a 4319 victory and a trip to the SCT Final Four.

Nick Lurski won by forfeit in the first match to hand the Rebels a quick 6-0 lead. Junior, Kyle Cocozza (18-5), then won a 3-2 decision over Mike Nasen at Heavyweight, and freshman, Anthony Gagliano (17-4), added a 4-1 decision over Daniel Rackliffe at 106 for a 12-12 tie after five matches.

Howell then won the next five bouts to take a commanding 34-12 lead. Se-

nior, Nick Braiuca (6-7), pinned Zack Botnick at 3:25, sophomore, Anthony Piazza (15-9), and Ashanti Maurice won decisions, and freshman phenom, Kris Lindemann (24-2), added a major decision win during the five-match run.

Junior, Joey Schultz, holding an impressive 23-5 season record, added a 10-3 decision over Dante Vega-Anfuso before Litowsky’s forfeit win, for the final margin of victory, 43-19.

The fourth seed Rebels will take on the No. 1 seed Toms River South Indians, Saturday at 3:00p.m. @ Pine Belt Arena on the campus of Toms River North.

The winner will move on to face the winner of the Brick Memorial (2 seed) vs. Jackson Memorial (3 seed) matchup.

The Indians (19-2-1) are the Shores number one ranked team, and fourth in the NJWWA Polls, so it shapes up to be a tremendous dual.

Spartans Fall To #1 Seeded Indians

The Ocean Township wrestling team has a 17 win and 5 loss record so far this season and they are ranked number nine in the Shore Conference. They have also scored big wins over Central regional (65 to 6) and Hasbrouck Heights (46 to 21) and entered the Shore Conference Tournament as the number eight seed. The Spartans had to face the number one seed in Toms River South and even though Ocean took the lead a few times, they eventually fell to the Indians by the score of

Jackson Wrestling Built to Last

There are many reasons, beyond talent alone, why the Jackson Memorial wrestling program is so successful, not just over the course of a few years, but over several decades.

The student-athletes on the Jaguars' roster believe in themselves, their teammates, their coaches and they are

committed to continuing the fine tradition on the mat.

This winter Jackson is paced by solid leadership and has newcomers making positive impacts throughout the lineup. Not surprisingly, the Jags are once again a top notch squad in the state.

“Brian Hamann (senior, 138 pounds) leads through his work ethic and performance on the mat,'' Jackson Memorial head coach, Aaron Gottesman, said. “Spencer Young (senior, 145) is a vocal leader who continually reinforces the values of the program. Ken Bradley (junior, 195) leads due to the high respect that his teammates give him.

Cougars Hit their Stride

For fans of high school wrestling in the Garden State, it may feel as though the season is simply flying by - indeed District Tournaments are scheduled to get underway on February 15.

Colts Neck High School, a program that struggled out of the gates this season, seemed to have found its stride a bit toward the end of January. The Cougars who dropped eight matches in row from the beginning to the middle of January, found some footing by going 3-0 in a recent quad-meet with triumphs over Red Bank Regional (34-27), Saint Rose (42-18), and Monmouth Regional (44-25).

The success that the Cougars are earning is coming at a crucial time in the season as teams and individuals gear up for the postseason. Colts Neck, now under the guidance of first year head coach Brett Jankos, has some individual wrestlers to watch at the District 21 Tournament.

Nick Ottaviano (junior, 113 pounds), Pete Ottaviano (senior, 120) and Dylan Campbell (junior,

132) anchor the lower weight classes. Senior, Frank Lefkowitz, is having a solid season for the Cougars at 220 pounds.

Jankos himself had a very successful career while at Brick Memorial, including a fourth place finish in the State Tournament in 2002. Colts Neck's last State place winner was Tyler Fraley, who placed second in the 103-pound class in 2010.

YOUNG COLT MATMEN FALL TO STATE RANKED HOWELL

LINCROFT – Christian Brothers Academy’s (CBA) inexperience was too much to overcome as the young Colts (7-1,4-1) lost a 42-18 match to Howell Township (15-1,5-0) Friday night in Lincroft.

The loss drops the Colts into second place in the Shore Conference Class A North Division. Howell, ranked 14th in the state and 5th in the Shore, takes over sole possession of first place.

CBA is coming off one of its most successful seasons in school history. The 2012 Colts (23-8) ranked 23rd in the state and 8th in the Shore Conference in season ending polls.

However, the Colts graduated seven starters, including the Shore Conference.com Wrestler of the Year, Hayden Hrymack (42-2).

Hrymack placed fifth in the NJSIAA Tournament and first in the District 22 and Region 22 championships.

Combined, those seven seniors accounted for 188 wins in the 2012 season, and the Colts were expected to transition into a rebuilding year.

CBA is stacked with underclassmen, including eight freshman, three sophomores, seven juniors and only one senior competing this year. Regardless, they do possess a small, but very talented nucleus of experienced grapplers.

Juniors, Eric Beshada (126) and Christian Casselli (138), are back after tremendous 2012 campaigns. Beshada (35-5) won the District 22 Tournament and placed second in the Region 6 Tournament. This year he won the Colts Classic and placed second in the Walter Wood Tournament.

In Friday night’s featured match, Beshada upped his season record to 12-1, with 3-0 decision over freshman, Kris Lindeman (192). Potentially, these two extremely talented grapplers will see a lot of each other in the upcoming post-season tournaments.

Casselli placed second in the District 22 Tour-

nament last year and won this year’s Colt Classic along with placing third in the Walter Woods Tournament.

In another spotlight match Friday night, Casselli (5-2) lost a hard fought 3-1 overtime decision to undefeated Ben Esposito (19-0).

Another pair of juniors, Mike Oxley (182) and Tyler Mabry (145), provides the Colts some added experience. Oxley, 11-6 last year, has been a force while posting an impressive 14-1 record so far this year.

Mabry (138), who registered 12 wins against 15 defeats last year, lost a major decision Friday night to senior, Ashanti Maurice (164).

Mellon is back to 2012 form as he tabled the Colts second pin of the night, dropping senior, James Sisoiak (10-7), at the 1:47 mark of the match. With the win, Mellon’s record improved to (9-2).

Freshmen, Sebastian Rivera, Carl Vasti, Dylan VanSickell, Ben Kuhn, Jack LaCorte, Chris Koutzen, Will Oxley and Bill Hroesbeck, have combined for 37 wins this season, while sophomores, Nick Koutzen, Justin Kieslor and Alex Petrocelli, have contributed seven wins.

With so many talented underclassmen, the future is very bright for this Colt’s team. However, don’t be shocked if they continue to surprise as the season progresses and make a statement in the post season.

"I wasn't happy at the start," said Jones, who picked up his 400th varsity coaching victory with a win over Delsea two weeks ago. He coached at Red Bank Catholic for a few years before taking over at Middletown North.

"We played better after the first quarter and concentrated on defense," said Jones. "We lost to three teams in our division and another to Matwan. I wasn't happy with that and we had to work on our concentration. We have one more division game Tuesday against Colts Neck. "We have a balanced offense," said Jones, "but Nicole, Mia Ehling and Emily Lavin have been playing well for us."

Mater Dei (6-9) in contrast, is struggling with a very young team, but new coach Tom Weston is optimistic about the future. "We're a very young team and are a work in progress," Weston

pointed out. "I'm getting used to them and they are getting used to me. I'm trying to implement my system. I'm pleased with our execution and hustle.

I'm hoping for a couple of wins down the road, but our schedule has hurt us," he noted. "We have only one senior, but this is a great group of kids to work with and we've come a long way.

"I'm excited about the future and we just have to keep it going." .

LB Girls’ Swimming Sets Records

By Ted Kaiser LONG BRANCH— It has been a banner season for the Long Branch girls’ swimming team. The Green Wave are putting together perhaps the best season in school history with a top five finish in the Monmouth County Championships and a host of school records falling.

Long Branch was brimming with confidence, the team finished 4th in the Shore Conference championships on Saturday. Brenna Strollo qualified for states in the 100 backstroke and the team qualified in the medley relay.

“I feel blessed with the group of swimmers we have on our team.

They all have a super work ethic, great attitudes, and are dedicated swimmers,” says head coach, Jeremy Julio. “Long Branch is moving in the right direction and I know these swimmers are excited to create their legacy. The girls will finish with the best team record in Long Branch history. Every meet we lost came down to the very end of the meet.

This year has been exciting and we hope to keep it going in the Shore Conference and states.”

Every school record other than the 100 breaststroke has been broken this season. As a team, they’ve shattered the 200 medley, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle records. Junior Hannah Elliott is now the top pace setter in the 100 fly (1:00.13) and the 500 freestyle (5:21.20). Hayley Masi, another junior, has the records for the 50 freestyle (0:24.79) and the 100 freestyle (0:53.42).

Senior, Brenna Strollo, now owns the mark for the 100 backstroke (1:01.69). Emily Balina, a freshman, is the fourth swimmer who has been a part of the record breaking relay teams.

“It’s rewarding to look up at the record board to see that my team and I broke so many of the records that were standing for so long,” says Hannah Elliott. “Jeremy (Julio) was the coach last year and this is his second year. He does a great job of getting us excited to play and get pumped.”

Elliott and her teammates will also take part in the upcoming state tournament. The Green Wave will have their relay squad in the 200 freestyle relay. Elliott will also be in the 200 medley and the 100 fly and Hayley Masi will be in the 100 freestyle.

Coach Julio is proud of his team because they compete despite not having the depth that many teams have.

Just competing with the top teams at the state level is a huge accomplishment in the eyes of the coach.

“It’s the first time in a long for Long Branch to have a relay team going to states.” Elliott explains. “It’s nice that my teammates and I also qualified for some individual events. We are really looking forward to it.”

Brick Memorial Edges TR South for SCT Crown

TOMS RIVER— It was a fierce battle between two wrestling heavyweights going for the Shore Conference Tournament championship. Brick Memorial prevailed with a narrow 32-29 win over Toms River South for the title. The Mustangs outlasted the top seed with a strong effort that included one pin and two major decisions. Cliff Ruggiero’s pin of Garrett Applegate in the 152 lb. weight class was perhaps the biggest outcome of the night. Tyler Poling (heavyweight) and Alec Donovan (138 lbs.) recorded the major decisions for the Mustangs.

Brick Memorial held off a rally by Jackson Memorial to reach the final with a 37-23 victory. The Jaguars shook off an early deficit and took a 23-22 lead briefly after four wins in a row beginning with Alec Huxford (126 lbs.) and

ending with Spencer Young (145 lbs.).

But the Mustangs proved their mettle and won out for the rest of the match.

Rob Ruggiero (152 lbs.) and Tyler Richardson (170 lbs) earned pins in two of the final three bouts to clinch a berth in the finals.

The Indians advanced to the final with a 28-26 win over 4th seeded Howell.

The win was not quite the nailbiter that the score would indicate but the Rebels kept it close. TR South enjoyed a solid lead until a pair of wins by Howell thanks to Kris Lindemann (126 lbs.) and Ben Esposito (132 lbs.). With the match tightened, the Indians reeled off three straight bouts with Matt Theobold getting it started at 138 lbs. The 2012 state champion B.J. Clagon earned a major decision at 145 lbs. and Garrett Applegate earned the win at 152 lbs.

Top Seeded TR South at Full Strength

TOMS RIVER— After finishing in a tie for the Class A South Division title, the Toms River South wrestling team turned its attention to the Shore Conference Tournament. The Indians were awarded the top seed and with that came a bullseye and the pressure that goes along with it. It also meant a matchup with scrappy 8th seeded Ocean Township in the SCT quarterfinals last Thursday. The Spartans came out strong and took an early six point edge, but Owen McClave (106 lbs.), Kevin Corrigan (113 lbs.), and Brandon Murray (120 lbs.) won their bouts and combined for 17 bonus points to turn the tide. TR South went on for a 43-25 victory to advance.

Clagon, who went 41-0 last year and won the state championship at 138 lbs., earned the pin in just 23 seconds at 145 lbs. Garrett Applegate then sealed the win with in the 160 lb. weight class. The victory earned TR South a meeting with 4th seeded Howell in the SCT semifinals on Saturday.

“I think we’ve got a few guys who can get us some bonus points (in the semifinals/finals) and we have to neutralize the other team’s top wrestlers,” says coach Laycock.

“We feel good. We’ve proven that we belong this year and we’ll have everybody back in our lineup tomorrow (Saturday). We had a little flu bug this week, but everybody is fine now.”

By Mike Ready BRICK – After beating Point Pleasant Beach 42-27 Tuesday in the SCT Preliminary Round, the Eagles lost to state power, Brick Memorial, 50-16, in a Pre-Quarter Final match Thursday night at Brick Memorial High School.

Brick Memorial (18-2) is ranked number five in the state, and number two in the shore. Their two losses came against Toms River South (18-2), ranked fourth in the state and first in the shore, and Bergen Catholic (161), ranked second in the state. The Mustangs will face Jackson Memorial (13-5), ranked 13th in the state, in a semifinal match on Friday.

It was a daunting task ahead for the Eagles as they took to the mats for their first match. South hung tough, winning three of the first six matches, and only trailed the Mustangs 15-10 at that point.

Junior, Connor Spreen (13-11), won a 6-4 decision at 195, Heavyweight, Tyler Tomanek (7-7), added a major decision win (14-5), and junior, Dom Franciosi (21-4), won a 5-0 decision at the 113-weight class.

Brick Memorial then took seven of the eight remaining matches for the final margin of victory. Senior, Andrew Blasco (22-2), pinned Tim Santiago at 1:05 in the 152-weight class for the Eagles final points.

The Eagles had won six straight matches before Thursday’s loss to Brick Memorial and Tuesday’s win against a

very good Point Pleasant Beach (14-4) team was a tremendous win for South.

Connor Spreen and junior, Taylor Henrickson (4-1), got South out to a fast start with pins in the opening matches. Heavyweight, Trevor Finn (18-5), made it three-straight taking a 4-3 decision and a 15-0 South lead.

Point Beach then won four of the next five matches by pins to take a 24-18 lead after eight bouts. In between, junior, Dom Franciosi (21-4), won a 9-3 decision.

Senior, Jon Cook, pulled the Eagles to within three, with a 3-2 decision over Jake DeLorenzo to set up the match of the day.

Trailing 24-21, South sophomore, Matthew Best (17-6), pinned Point Beach star, Riley Kelly (19-2), at 3:18 to hand the Eagles the lead for good, 27-24.

South went on to win three of the final four bouts for a hard fought 42-27 victory. Freshman, Trent Giglio (8-11), won a 2-0 decision and senior, Mo Jrad (10-9), pinned Pat Waldman at 0:26. Andrew Blasco won by Forfeit.

The Eagles are loaded with underclassmen on this year’s squad. With 10 freshmen, 3 sophomores, and 7 juniors all having wrestled this year, the future looks very promising.

Walsh, the states leading rebounder with a 16.9 per game average, grabbed a game-high 19 boards, while dominating the paint on this special night.

WALL-- Following a 7-1 win over Freehold Boro on January 30, the Wall Township High School ice hockey team finds itself one more victory away from earning a Shore Conference B South Championship. They’ll look to secure that victory on February 6 when they meet Manasquan, which holds a 3-6 division record.

After outscoring their last two division opponents by a total of 10 goals, thanks to backto-back seven goal efforts and the strong goaltending by starter Troy Klahre, the Scarlet Knights will carry a lot of momentum into their division finale. Predictably, Wall’s offensive onslaught of the last two games has been led by sophomore center, Jeff Morgan, who potted five of his team leading 31 goals in the last two games, including a hat trick against Freehold Boro, and also added to his team lead in assists (32) by

setting up new teammate JT Tarantino, formerly of CBA, on two of the four goals he’s scored since joining the Knights.

Senior, Luke Stohrer, who’s tied with senior defenseman, Tom Panico, for second on the team in assists with 17, has also gone on something of a scoring binge, more than doubling his season goals total, now at five, with three scores in the last two games.

Junior, Alex Wuestneck, third on the team in goals scored with 13 (trailing Morgan and Panico [14]), has also taken a different route for accumulating points recently by nearly doubling his season total in assists by accumulating five of his 11 in the last two games.

A Wall victory over Manasquan would give the Knights their eighth divisional championship under coach, Mike Dianora.

Colts Looking to Tournaments

The Christian Brothers Academy basketball team has worked their way to a 13 – 6 record this season and are ranked number nine in the Shore Conference. The Colts had won 12 of their last 14 games before losing a tough 50 to 34 game to Middletown North (10-9). Before the Middletown North game, CBA had victories over Marlboro by the score of 64 to 47 and Middletown South by the score of 53 to 38.

Head coach Geoff Billett sees improvement in his team and, as always, will have his team ready for the upcoming tournaments (Shore Conference and State).

In the Marlboro game, Pat Andree led the Colts in scoring with 19 points. Andree is the teams leading scorer on the season as well averaging 12.5 points per game. Lou

Pillari also added 13 points, while Rob Kennedy scored 9 points and Evan Gordinier added 7 points in the win over Marlboro. In the loss to Middletown North, Andree scored 5 points and Tom Aldridge added 8 points. Also adding offense this season is Kevin Neller who has made 25 three pointers this season to lead the team.

Coach Billett has seen his team improve as the season has gone on and the Colts are looking forward to the Shore Conference Tournament as well as the state tournament. CBA has regular season games remaining against Howell (1-15) and Holmdel (11-7) before the tournaments begin. Coach Billett said, "We like the progress the kids have made this season and we are looking forward to the upcoming tournaments".

Caseys Clinch Division Crown

RED BANK - Red Bank Catholic started fast and finished the same way Thursday in scoring an impressive 49-34 win over Rumson-Fair Haven Regional and clinching its first A Central Division title since 2007.

In winning, the Caseys (16-1) had to overcome a stunning third quarter scor-

ing drought in which it managed only one point, but they finally rediscovered their shooting touch in the final quarter by scoring the final 15 points of the game.

"We have had trouble all year coming out in the third quarter," said RBC coach, Joe Montano, "but Rumson is a tough team

with skilled players. Fortunately, the team came together and regrouped."

Taking advantage of RBC's poor shooting, Rumson, trailing 28-14 late in the first half, slowly narrowed the deficit. They finally tied up the game at 31 on a jumper by Jess Harvey with seven minutes left. "We didn't

make many changes in the second half," said Rumson coach, George Sourlis. "We played a little better defense and the kids didn't quit."

Alex Alfano dropped in two foul shots for RBC but Harvey tied it again with a drive.

Caroline Corcoran drilled a three to put RBC up 37-34, but Rumson's Grace Stant answered with a three of her own to tie it at 37.

That, however, was to be Rumson's final points of the game as RBC ran off the last 15 points of the contest beginning with a three-pointer by Grace Fallon. Corcoran had five points in this streak, "We spent a lot of energy coming back and might have been a little tired," said Sourlis, "but they came back and made some big shots down the stretch. That is why they are the No.1 team in the Shore, but I'm proud of the way my team rallied."
