Celtic Coin Hoard

This is the second year of the Ice Age Island three-year archaeological project in which Jersey Heritage, and other partners on the island, is working with a team of academics drawn from a number of prestigious universities and institutions who are exploring Jersey’s prehistory. Specialists are searching our headlands, coasts, caves, fields and seabed in the hope of discovering new sites and Ice Age landscapes, as well as applying cutting edge scientific techniques to already known sites. This exhibition reports on their progress as they discover new and exciting stories about how our ancestors lived and adapted to the Ice Age world. Samarès Manor

Jersey’s Garden Treasure

The Fascination of Herbs

The Gardens

Samarès Manor’s herb garden, the largest and most comprehensive in Britain, contains hundreds of culinary, fragrant, cosmetic and medicinal plants, from trees to small shrubs and annuals. The garden, created by renowned garden designer and author, John Brookes, contains large blocks of herbs, set within an abstract array of gravelled paths. The introduction of herbs at Samarès has helped to widen public interest in these versatile plants and encouraged people to design their own herb gardens.

Created in the 1920s by Sir James Knott and substantially restored and replanted over the last twenty years, the gardens of Samarès Manor embrace many different design styles and themes. They include a diversity of environmental conditions and plant types. The gardens evoke feelings of tranquillity and peace, whilst being stimulating, interesting and fun. ■ ■ ■ ■

The Botanical Project Samarès Manor’s response to the increased public awareness in plants and gardening has been to introduce an educational approach to the on-going development of the gardens. It has included a comprehensive programme of plant identification and labelling, together with the creation of gardens which illustrate different design themes and the effects of seasonality, climate and environment. Many tender and exotic plants that thrive in Jersey’s mild climate can be seen growing at Samarès. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Enjoy Nature La Lande de Ouest Part of the dry coastal heathland lying above the cliffs along the greater part of the south-west coast. A designated Site of Special Interest (SSI) and rich in flora and fauna, this area is an important part of the island’s landscape, and biodiversity. A great area for walking and bird watching.

St Catherine’s Woods

Le Noir Pré

Ramsar Sites

Often known simply as “The Orchid Field”, this unique site actually consists of two distinct but adjoining wet meadows. Le Noir Pré and the smaller Le Clos du Seigneur. The site is one of the last remaining strongholds of the Jersey Orchid or loose-flowered Orchid (Orchis Laxiflora). Orchid flowering season May and June.

These are areas listed on the Ramstar List of Westland’s of International Importance which concerns the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. Jersey has four! These magnificent sites are; the southeast coast of Jersey, Le Minquiers, Les Ècréhous, and Les Dirouilles, and Les Pierres de lecq (The Paternosters). These sites are truly unique and worth a visit; however, three of these sites are offshore reefs and require a trip by boat. Check out the “Activities” section of the operators who can take you on a short boat trip to see these sites. The south coast area can be walked around and guided walks are available (contact Jersey Walk Adventures – see “Activities”). Important! If you wish to walk around the area independently please seek advice first as the tide rises rapidly and you can become stranded if unprepared. Knowledge of the tides is essentially. Jersey Tourism can provide advice if necessary but recommends that you employ a guide. See “Walking” section of this guide.

St Catherine’s Woods

Also known as Rozel Woods, this woodland is set in a deep-cut, steepsided valley. A stream running through the valley floor has helped develop a wide range of habitats within the woodland.

Les Landes This coastal heathland is the most spectacular aspect of Jersey’s wild environments. Les Landes is Jersey’s largest single expanse of maritime heathland covering 160 hectares and bound by 3 km of high granite cliffs.

Val de la Mare Arboretum

Le Noir Pré

Hidden away in the north west corner of the Island next to Val de la Mare reservoir, is one of Britain’s most unique collection of trees in an arboretum called ‘The Forgotten Forest’. Planted in the late 1970s, seedlings grown from seeds gathered all over the world have progressed into an eclectic collection of mature trees. Divided into zones within the arboretum, North American maples and oaks stand near Australasian eucalyptus trees, interesting flora compliment a majestic wingnut, walnut and hickory zone. Don’t miss a giant Californian redwood specimen or the Japanese zone alongside the conifers and pines. There’s even an ‘Elm Trial Zone’ containing species of the tree which are thought to be resistant to Dutch elm disease.

Where do the locals go? When you are visiting somewhere new, we all know the best places are where the local folk love to go. Here are two of Jersey’s favourites, one in St.Helier and one on the East Coast. The Inn • Restaurant & Bar THE INN is proud to be one of the first restaurants in Jersey to be awarded a Taste Jersey accreditation receiving Gold Highly Commended, recognising outstanding food and service and also holds a coveted Gold Award from Visit Britain. You’ll find it on Queen’s Road, just a short walk from the centre of town in all its purple glory. The Restaurant is calm and inviting, with unusual art adding a fun vibe. You’ll find a real mix of customers and the staff are incredibly efficient and friendly. THE INN has some of the best Chefs in Jersey, who will prepare for you fresh locally caught fish, tender steaks and house specialities - loads to choose from.

THE INN Bar Meals

Drinks and light snacks served at most other times Monday-Friday: 6.30pm - 9.15pm Saturday: 1.00pm - 9.15pm Sunday: 1.00pm - 8.00pm

On a Sunday there is no need to rush for lunch... Slunch! THE INN serves food anytime from 1-8pm and you can Slunch a little or a lot.

Restaurant

THE INN’s Bar has a great range of wines, cocktails and real ales, as well as serving food and the Live music on Friday and Saturday nights is a real treat.

Getting there

Seymour Inn • Traditional Pub & Restaurant Take a trip out to Grouville and visit the Seymour Inn, a traditional Jersey pub with a warm welcome and great pub grub. The menu has lots of choice including, unsurprisingly being surrounded by sea, plenty of delicious fish dishes. The oysters come from right across the road and you can even see the oyster beds. The al fresco areas are perfect to enjoy the beach views with a chilled glass of wine or real ale. On Sundays the Seymour Inn also serves lunch all day until 8pm. Two Jersey gems, both with excellent food and friendly service, THE INN and the Seymour Inn won’t disappoint. And to welcome visitors to Jersey, receive 10% off your meal when you use this voucher.

Driving & Parking

SPEED LIMITS

20 30 40 SEATBELTS Drivers and adults must wear seat belts in both front and rear seats. Children must wear seat belts or a suitable child/infant restraint, in both front and rear seats.

YOUR DUTY IN CASE OF ACCIDENTS If involved in an accident stop. You must: Contact the Police who will advise the correct course of action. Failure to do so is a criminal offence. If damage is caused to any unattended vehicle or property. Even if your vehicle is damaged and is the only one involved or, if any injury is caused to any person or animal. In any other case you must, if required, exchange personal details together with details of insurance cover.

WHAT ARE PAYCARDS? Paycards are used to pay for parking throughout Jersey. They have to be used: MONDAY TO SATURDAY (INCLUSIVE) 8.00 am to 5.00 pm There are also a number of on-street and residents parking zones where parking is chargeable after 5.00pm and on Sundays. Please carefully check parking signs for details. You must use them whenever you park on-street (RED and YELLOW) zones and in all car parks where you see the above sign: The charge for parking on-street is 1 Unit per stay. This would be 20 minutes in a YELLOW zone and 1 hour in a RED zone. In car parks the charge is variable – see the notice boards at the entrance and within each car park for details of the tariff. You can buy books of Paycards wherever you see a sign similar to the one above displayed in shops, garages, hotels, your hire-car company, the car ferry, the Visitor Information Office or the Car Park Administration Office in Sand Street. They are available in three denominations – 1 Unit, 2 Units and 4 Units. There are 10 Paycards in each book, but you can buy them singly. Upon arrival at the parking place: Decide how long you intend to stay (remember on-street parking and some car parks are limited to short-stay).

PAYCARDS INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE Calculate the cost from the notice board (on-street parking is 1 Unit per visit). Scratch off five panels – MONTH, DAY, DATE, HOUR AND MINUTE (to next 5 minutes) to show the time of your arrival or the start of the next charging period if parking during a non chargeable period (overnight or Sunday). When using more than one Paycard it is important to scratch off each one identically. Display the validated Paycards by placing them face-up on the dashboard so that all the details on each card displayed can be clearly seen from outside the vehicle. You will also find instructions of the reverse of each Paycard. FAILURE TO CLEARLY DISPLAY ADEQUATE CORRECTLY MARKED PAYCARD(S) CAN RESULT IN A PENALTY CHARGE OF £60.00 A new pay on return style system which does not use Paycards is now in use in Sand Street MultiStorey Car Park - please see signs in that car park for details or phone (+44) 1534 448669 for further information

BEACH LIFEGUARDS IN JERSEY A team of professional lifeguards patrol key beaches from mid May to the end of September. Look out for the red and yellow flags which indicate the patrolled areas for swimming. Swim within the flags, but note that when a red flag is flying the conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming. Jersey has some of the largest tidal flows in the world so take care when bathing or exploring the seashore. The beach lifeguard team is only too happy to advise swimmers regarding beach safety, please ask.
