Starstruck
WHEN WE RECEIVED THE CALL we were ecstatic.
Ever since we had unveiled the incredible new transformation of The Boca Raton, and set ourselves on a path to reclaim status as the country’s top luxury resort and private club, one thing was certain. We knew that our success couldn’t rely on the property’s physical upgrades, but more so a commitment to high levels of service that would help us reach our goals. So, when we got the call from Forbes Travel Guide this year to tell us we achieved Five-Star awards for Beach Club, and for Spa Palmera, it was a monumental moment. It meant that our dedication to delivering exceptional service to Club members and resort guests was being recognized on a global scale. Forbes Five-Stars are not easily earned—only the chosen few hotels are able to meet and exceed Forbes’ rigorous standards of luxury. And we will not rest on our laurels. Our vision is to be a 25-star resort by 2026, which also happens to be the 100th anniversary of The Boca Raton.
And it can all be attributed to our team members and those they work tirelessly to serve: you.
We are extremely lucky to have so many talented associates, and they are the reason that our 200-acre slice of paradise is such a world-renowned destination. In this issue, we highlight a few of them. Individuals like James Carmody, the general manager of Cloister and Bungalows, and Hector Rubio, the director of resort events and programming who is responsible for so many memorable Member fetes and celebrations, make The Boca Raton an extra special location to enjoy with friends and family. Read more about James and Hector in our Inspired By pages and learn how they continue to create extraordinary moments.
In these pages, we also introduce a few of the very people who inspire us: our Club members. Each of the experiences at The Club is a reflection of this community and lifestyle, and we are incredibly appreciative of our members who help us create textured, long-lasting memories. Here, we feature four members with diverse perspectives, who share what inspires them at The Club. As we learned, it could be a few friendly faces at a group fitness class or the chance to have a romantic evening out with a spouse. It’s these moments that we love hearing about, and we hope to share more stories in future issues.
We invite you to read about various other new and exciting amenities at The Boca Raton, including our brand-new adultfree club for kids, The Break, as well as curated shops, and our recently opened offering for men, Truman’s Gentlemen’s Groomers. And we give you a peek into our adults-only enclave, Yacht Club, with its fine dining restaurant Flybridge. The additions of these new amenities allow us to continue evolving and refining our spaces into meaningful locations that make a positive impact on your life. And who knows? Maybe there’s an award or two in the future for them as well.

If there’s one thing that pairs well with Florida’s sunny climate, it’s a cool milkshake. Head over to Burger Bar, where members and guests will find decadent flavor selections, including chocolate brownie, banana split, and strawberry cheesecake.
CAULIFLOWER POWER
With a backdrop of idyllic Lake Boca Raton, Harbor House matches the elegantly relaxed atmosphere with a popular cauliflower dish packed with textured flavors that has become a menu favorite. Marinaded in apple curry, the roasted cauliflower sits atop a dollop of lemon labneh, or Mediterranean yogurt, and is then drizzled with honey. A hint of habanero spice adds an unexpected layer of flavor.
THE PERFECT CUT
For three generations, the Scarselli family has been producing and selling some of the world’s highest quality color diamonds—rare stones in shades of yellow, blue and pink diamonds—available on the market. Today, members and guests can see the brilliant pieces in person at the brand-new Scarselli Diamonds showroom in Cloister. Relax and sip on Champagne as you shop for beautiful jewelry, including from The Boca Raton Collection by Scarselli Diamonds, an exclusive line for members and guests.
FIVE-STAR AWARDS!
Forbes Travel Guide has awarded The Boca Raton with two independent Five-Star awards, a coveted recognition by the only global rating system for luxury hotels, restaurants, spas and ocean cruises. The 2023 Five-Star Awards include The Boca Raton Beach Club and Spa Palmera.
The Boca Raton Beach Club joins the list of illustrious hotels with the Forbes honor. The 212-room Beach Club’s FiveStar experience is defined by outstanding service driven by a genuine interest in each guest’s experience, from carefree days spent lounging at three sparkling pools, at the new Vilebrequin Cabana Club, or while dining on Mediterranean cuisine at Marisol restaurant.
Spa Palmera earned its Five-Star status by succeeding in its exemplary service, its menu of luxury treatments, and its delivery of relaxation to its guests. Reminiscent of the elegant grandeur of Spain’s Alhambra Palace, Spa Palmera recently underwent a redesign of its spaces, along with a refresh and elevation of its treatments. Mediterranean influences are infused with tropical elements of South Florida’s coast that highlight its special sense of place.
ARTFUL TOUCHES
Opening a location at The Boca Raton in 2009, Sponder Gallery has presented the resort with a wide collection of postwar and contemporary art, featuring artists who display innovative techniques and a unique approach to materials. Highlighting the work of Armenian-born and New York-based artist Tigran Tsitoghdzyan, two versions of “DS Mirror for Ukraine” are Sponder Gallery’s latest offerings to adorn The Boca Raton. Part of Tsitoghdzyan’s renowned body of work “Mirrors,” “DS Mirror for Ukraine” is the artist’s most recent rendering of the series. In this piece, Tsitoghdzyan infuses a bold blue and vibrant yellow into his signature monochromatic black-and-white compositions to stand in solidarity with Ukraine; the painting also features Ukrainian model and humanitarian Darya Semenchenko. Tsitoghdzyan’s work exemplifies Sponder Gallery’s commitment to presenting art balancing strong aesthetic sensibilities and rich global ideas.

HOME IS WHERE THE COURT IS
If the numbers don’t lie, then we have a true boom on our hands. According to the Association of Pickleball Professionals, there are 36.5 million pickleball players in the United States, growing an average of 158 percent over the last three years. On the trajectory of these increasing numbers, The Boca Raton Racquet Club has incorporated its signature high standard of service for pickleball players of all levels.
In addition to its tennis concierge program, the Racquet Club has been accelerating its pickleball programming, making it a year-round facility for Club members and guests. The six lit pickleball courts have open play twice a day from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. There are also three pickleball pros who provide lessons and clinics on a daily basis. This year, the Club will play host to a Pickleball Club Championship, as well as a fun XGLOsive Glow-In-The-Dark pickleball event twice a year.
“Women need to be involved in their financial plans and have an understanding of where all of their assets are, and what they are used for,” says Certified Financial Planner™ Elizabeth Bennett.
As a woman who has reared a child, been through a divorce and is working toward her own financial future, she forges a relationship with her clients from her own personal experiences.
“You need be in control of your finances and not leave that responsibility to someone else,” she cautions. “Knowing the types of investments that you have, the log-ins for your accounts, and sharing that information with your spouse is very important. Being involved in reviews with your financial advisor and understanding how to access those assets is imperative,” Bennett says.
“Taking responsibility for your financial wellbeing, starting at a young age, is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself. You should take advantage of your employer’s retirement plan, understand what your short-term savings need to look like and what your assets’ tax implications are. Be aware of your spending habits and where all of your money is going, whether you are single or married. As women, we know the value of delegating. My advice is to take one thing off of your plate and reach out to an advisor to get your financial house in order with someone you can trust. I am here for you,” she says.
The Break You Need
Tour our adults-free zone with a 12-year-old expert on fun
By Milo Hill, Age 12IT WAS VACATION TIME, and I was excited to escape my Northeast winter for a long tropical weekend down at The Boca Raton. On our first day, after I had breakfast at Sadelle’s, and a long, fun afternoon at Beachside hanging with my fam, The Break was an awesome getaway from my parents to chill and relax.
I had heard that The Break has fun experiences to keep you busy and occupied, and I wasn’t disappointed. Getting there is a piece of
cake—you walk through Harborside Pool Club, next to the water slides and FlowRider surfing. Upstairs is The Break, which has views of the Intracoastal on one side, and people floating by on the lazy river on the other. When my brother, Oscar, and I arrived, we first headed over to the rotating TikTok platform, which had many features, including multiple angles and bright lights. You stand in the center, place your phone on the spinning arm, and let the magic happen. I’ve never seen anything like it. We chose a
song and danced on the platform while the camera spun. You can make 360-degree videos that can even be in slow motion.
I then sat at the Xbox station, which had loads of action-packed thrillers. I got to play a game called Rocket League, which was virtual soccer but in a rocket-fueled race car. The games were amazing, and I had a blast! (If you are feeling old-school, The Break also has a collection of classic board games like Mancala and Pictionary.)
Next up were the virtual reality chairs. They are super cool-looking—like they are
from the future. It made me feel like I was in another dimension with all the bumps and unexpected vibrations. In one game, I took a virtual ride on a candy coaster where there was a dancing gummy bear, a breakdancing lollipop and other characters. And when I was done, I decided to go over to the GIANT CANDY WALL at The Break!!! It was a true “sweet” pop of color. I picked my personalized bag of goodies with the assistance of The Break’s attendant, Erica— who was caring and helpful throughout the evening (even though we definitely don’t
agree on cinnamon jelly bellies). Then, I sat back to relax on the outdoor balcony while watching the surfers on FlowRider.
Thirsty? Well, you can pick from the selection of extreme soda flavors ranging from Zombie Brain to Gamer Goop. It was hard for me to choose, but I ended up picking Alien Snot, consisting of kiwi and blue raspberry. It was super light and fizzy, and next time I think I want to try the purple Unicorn Yack, which is orange raspberry-flavored.
Another unique option at The Break is the soundproof podcasting booth, where you can interview up to three other people by using headsets, microphones and other high-tech equipment. Being at The Break is truly time well spent—so much so that I didn’t even realize I was there for an hour and a half! I think the time went by so fast because I was having so much fun.
At that point in the night, I walked back to Tower—which is a short walk away—to order a delicious French Onion soup and Key Lime Pie from room service to end my chill day.
THE BREAK AT HARBORSIDE POOL CLUB
Kids just wanna have fun—so make sure you let yours head to The Break. This new hangout spot is full of entertaining options. Overlooking the Intracoastal, The Break offers the perfect second-floor vantage point for the popular FlowRider surf simulator. Here’s a breakdown of The Break amenities and programming:

Hector Rubio, Director of Resort Events & Programming
ONE NIGHT, IN THE MIDST of one of his team’s spectacular events at Harborside Lawn, Hector Rubio looked up to the stars. In that moment, he saw it: the Club’s next event.
As the director of resort events & programming, Rubio leads a team of event and logistics professionals who conceive, cultivate and curate memorable programming for the resort and Club members. The Fourth of July celebration with fireworks, barbecue and a sunset concert? That was Rubio. The Mardi Gras Signature Event with a blues trio and a second-line band? Also Rubio. In all, the resort events and programming team creates about 170 events a month, ranging from floral design classes to multiday fêtes. For Rubio—whose background includes Four Seasons locations in Las Vegas and Lana’i, Hawaii, among other luxury properties—he couldn’t imagine a better backdrop to throw a celebration than at The Boca Raton.
“I’m someone who is influenced by architecture, design trends and botanical, so when I look at a place that’s as storied as this, I feel surrounded by inspiration,” Rubio says. “It’s a playground of infinite possibilities on these 200 acres.”
James Carmody,
General Manager, Cloister and Bungalows
BEFORE HIS FIRST DAY as the general manager of Cloister and Bungalows, James Carmody purchased five books about The Boca Raton. A self-described history buff, Carmody said he couldn’t wait to absorb the context of the property and its founder, Addison Mizner. “I became so impressed with Mizner’s flair, how his style was adopted throughout the resort, and how it continues to serve as an inspiration even today with our team,” he says.
After a successful career in health care management at Tufts-New England Medical Center, Carmody returned to his roots in hospitality at Boston’s Seaport Hotel & Seaport World Trade Center, where he served as vice president and general manager for nearly 18 years. He arrived to The Boca Raton to oversee not just one hotel, but two. Despite each of the hotel’s distinctions, Carmody comes with a belief that listening to hotel guests and their experiences will help him pivot and adapt the properties to their changing needs.
“Our members and guests are really sophisticated travelers,” he says. “And their expectations change with their experiences. You have to listen to our guests and what they are telling you. It’s incredibly important, and motivates me to make our properties better every day.”
Introducing a few of our Club members who inspire us each day...
Kelly Hasiak
Lady of the house
Years of membership: Three
WHY SHE BECAME A MEMBER: “My husband and I live nearby, so it felt like a part of the beachside lifestyle. I love to walk or ride my scooter to the Club while appreciating the beautiful grounds and architecture. Being able to start or finish my day at the Club is really nice. It’s the perfect place to unwind and catch up with friends.”
WHAT INSPIRES HER AT THE CLUB: “When I walked into my first Zumba class, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The energy was amazing, and the room was filled with smiling faces. After class, some of the ladies invited me to the member room to enjoy refreshments and lovely conversations, and the ritual stuck. The group has grown, and we’re always welcoming those who are taking a class for the first time. We might all be in different chapters of our lives, but our shared bond is wellness and having a good time.”
Her tips for new members: “Try everything at least once. It’s been wonderful spending life events with family and friends at the Club, like the Lobster Bash, Fourth of July, seafood dinners, Thanksgiving and New Year’s.”
FINAL THOUGHTS: “We live in paradise! We are so fortunate to be members and experience meaningful connections and bonds. The Club also reconnected me with a family friend from Miami, whom I hadn’t seen in over 25 years.”
Alice Corey
Mother and brand ambassador, Hawk-Eye Management
Years of membership: Two
WHY SHE BECAME A MEMBER : “My husband, Michael, and I have nothing but the fondest memories of The Boca Raton, where we have vacationed with our children for years. When we moved from New York to Boca Raton, we were thrilled to have something familiar in a new environment.”
WHAT INSPIRES HER AT THE CLUB: “The Club could not be more inspirational to me, as it encapsulates Boca beautifully, from its extensive renovations of Tower, new restaurants like Harbor House with views of the Intracoastal, and its brand-new FlowRider, a surf wave simulator at Harborside Pool that my tween son and his friends absolutely love! Additionally, the talent they recruit ensures that members and guests have exceptional experiences. I look forward to Wanda’s warm welcome at Harborside gym and Rocco’s ‘good vibes only’ dance class.”
HOW THE CLUB HAS ALLOWED HER TO CREATE NEW MEMORIES: “It’s such a joy to create new family traditions, from the Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch to meeting old and new friends for drinks at Palm Court to sharing romantic dinners with my husband at Principessa Ristorante and Japanese Bocce Club. Needless to say, joining The Boca Raton is a highlight of living in Southern Florida!”

WHY SHE BECAME A MEMBER: “I love being on property and running into people I know. From a casual ‘hello’ to an impromptu three-hour dinner, the possibilities are endless. With myriad options for dining, socializing, and constantly improving programming, Club membership is a true must-have in my book that has exceeded my every expectation.”
WHAT INSPIRES HER AT THE CLUB:
“I love the people!
We have such an eclectic mix of members and guests on property at all times. With so many opportunities to experience the Club in diverse ways—enjoying delicious cuisines in gorgeous venues, relaxing seaside, being tenderized in the spa, challenging myself with fitness, pickleball and golf—all among friendly faces familiar and new, I just can’t imagine anything better.”
TIPS FOR NEW MEMBERS: “Bring yourself to your Club and do all the things! I think I used the Club a few times a year (maximum) for a long time. One day, I said, ‘Wait… why aren’t you using your membership to the fullest?’ I realized that I had to put myself out there to meet new people and make it all more fun, which I did (thankfully!), and I haven’t looked back.”
Kathleen Ann Crotty
Philanthropist
Years of membership: 20
WHAT INSPIRES HER AT THE CLUB:
“From the sincere welcome each and every morning at the front gate to the genuine smile of the ground and maintenance crew, I am constantly encouraged to participate in all the wonderful opportunities the Club has to offer. No matter where I am on property, the continuity and positive personality of all the employees certainly make this a one-of-a-kind club. Using the gym, pool, tennis, spa, salon, retail shops and having a libation in one of the incredible restaurants makes the Club a great lifestyle destination.”
TIPS FOR NEW MEMBERS: “Anyone who knows me knows that I am one of the Club’s biggest fans for so many reasons. My advice is to use the Club as often as possible to realize how fortunate we are to be a member of one of the most exclusive clubs in the United States.”
The Essentials
Experience curated aromatherapy at Spa
Palmera, check in at the biostation and discover why Truman’s is a cut above
SPA PALMERA INVITES YOU to close your eyes, and breathe it all in.
Inside the 50,000-square-foot wellness oasis, guests will be transported to a majestic new world with just one breath, thanks to four specially crafted essential oils.
The spa, which recently received the coveted Forbes Travel Guide’s Five-Star Award, has created a series of essential oils that not only harness the health benefits of aromatherapy but also have the ability to infuse the grandeur of the Alhambra Palace, where the spa draws upon its design, architecture and overall inspiration. The essential oils are packed with powerful plant extracts that are customized to breathe in a positive outlook using nature itself.
With its unique connection to the Alhambra, the Spa Palmera team began researching how to further and strengthen the link. And then it dawned on them: scents. In the Alhambra gardens, flowers and herbs served as both marks of nature’s beauty and its remedies. The famous medicinal gardens are full of jasmine and Damascus rose, creating a soft wafting scent that is transportive and healing. A walk through the gardens has strollers feeling restored.
“We took that concept and incorporated it into the spa,” says Tatiana Reginello, senior spa operations manager, who spearheaded the research and development of the Spa Palmera essential oils. “The sense of smell is closely related to memories and emotions. Aromas can send your brain into action and alter your
mood. In addition, more than our other senses, smell has the ability to bring us back to memories from years ago, from when we were babies and smelling grandmother’s cooking or a family vacation on the islands.”
Spa Palmera’s essential oils—in essence, plant extracts that capture the compounds that produce fragrance— come in four unique blends that are also infused with the healing power of gemstones within the bottle. They include:
Amber and Pine : Scents known for increasing well-being. This oil is paired with an amethyst stone, which is said to awaken one’s sense of awareness, and helps to focus and improve memory.
Damascus Rose: Said to instill harmony and love. Its accompanying gemstone is rose quartz, the universal stone of love, which helps to purify and open one’s heart to new levels, enhance friendships, and give a feeling of peace.
Lemongrass and Yuzu: Believed to help with clarity, as well as give a boost of energy. It is paired with citrine, a gemstone known to balance emotions and give clarity while uplifting the mood.
Jasmine: An uplifting scent, jasmine is said to relieve stress and help reduce anxiety. This oil is paired with peridot stone, known as the stone of compassion, and is believed to balance one’s emotions and help instill creativity.
At the beginning of every treatment at Spa Palmera, guests receive an intake of the scent of their choosing. It’s the start of a journey into Spa Palmera, Reginello says.
memory of Spa Palmera by taking some of that experience home with you, through special oils and aromas.
“The response has been so great with these oils and gemstones,” she says. “Some guests choose different ones each time they come in for a treatment. There’s no right or wrong; it’s all about how you’re feeling at the moment. If you need to de-stress or have more clarity, you might choose one oil; if you need a jolt of energy, you might try a different one.”
At the end of each treatment, guests are gifted with a small bottle of the facial mist scented with the aroma used in the service, as a way to remember their experience at Spa Palmera. In addition, the spa’s retail boutique features the unique scents and gemstones. A roll-on perfume is available, as well as a body oil and mala meditation bead with the specific gemstones.
“If you are coming from out of town, you can take a bottle with you,” Reginello says. “When you apply it, it will remind you about The Boca Raton. Guests can carry this great memory with them.”
THE BIOSTATION
At the biostation, take advantage of cutting-edge anti-aging and wellness services to care for your body from the inside out. Within its dedicated space at Spa Palmera, the biostation performs comprehensive, functional medicine practice, working to prevent and reverse the impacts of aging through its three pillars of care: restore beauty, replenish life, and defy age. Co-founder Ross Bloom discusses how to make the most of your time at the biostation.
What are some services offered at the biostation?
“Members and guests can achieve optimal results through cosmetic services such as Botox and Xeomin, dermal fillers, and micro-needling/PRP facial rejuvenation services. Replenish life features IV nutrient therapy, nutrient injections, and detox cleanses. Finally, the defy age services begin with a comprehensive blood panel, identifying specific biomarkers used to create a personalized medical wellness treatment plan. The treatment plan is used to address symptoms ranging from low energy and trouble sleeping to weight gain and low libido.
“Core to our defy age service pillar is the designation of a Wellness Concierge. Each member or guest will be assigned a Wellness Concierge to continue to guide and support them throughout their wellness journey. This ongoing care and support ensure that members and guests achieve and maintain optimal results.”
Tell us about a real-life success story.
“One of our favorite stories is how the biostation saved a wedding. While the bridal party was scheduled to enjoy a relaxing late-morning IV nutrient therapy party before that evening’s wedding, the father of the bride had an unsched-
uled IV session due to partying a little too much the night before. The bride wrote us a letter when she returned from the honeymoon, thanking us for making sure her father could walk her down the aisle and dance with her at the wedding reception.”
How can the biostation help during spring and summer days?
“Spring and summer is the perfect time to take advantage of IV therapy services due to loss of fluids and nutrients due to the hot Florida sun. It is also a perfect time to jump-start or kick a weight loss program into high gear so members and guests can be beach-ready. We invite Club members and guests to stop by our location inside Spa Palmera and let us know they read about us in 1926 magazine to receive a free nutrient injection. FLYBRIDGE & YACHT CLUB
A private and luxurious retreat at Yacht Club promises exquisite dining and special amenities
BY NILA DO SIMONIN MY OPINION, one of the best ways to assess your hotel guestroom is from its balcony. There, at that vantage point that allows you midair suspension, you can see the world. Or, at least the best slice of it.
That was my perspective when my husband and I indulged in our recent getaway to Yacht Club, The Boca Raton’s intimate oasis on Lake Boca Raton, where my balcony view included a dazzling swath of the serenity of Lake Boca, the Atlantic Ocean, and resort marina. Oftentimes I think time stops momentarily during a vacation, and it did at Yacht Club, standing on my balcony, where yachts gently bumped against the undulating waters and the quiet morning stood still.
A stay at Yacht Club, a fully relaxed one, allowed me the chance to soak in a moment of intention. Perhaps it was the sophisticated, adults-only atmosphere (only individuals 16 and older may check into Yacht Club), or the upscale, coastal decor that complemented the gorgeous lakeside setting, or even the butler service that took care of my every need. Whatever it was, I was there, both physically and mentally. And I was ready.
After saying goodbye to our kids, who were in the watchful hands of Grandma and Grandpa and with plans to dote on them at the toy store, my husband and I were off.
While Yacht Club guests have access to all amenities at The Boca Raton, not all guests have access to the amenities at Yacht Club. Exclusive to guests of Yacht Club and private Club members is Flybridge, a fine dining concept that offers a multi-course pre-fixe dinner menu. On the top floor of the build -
ing, I was treated to magnificent views of Lake Boca Raton and beyond, thanks to Flybridge’s floor-to-ceiling windows. The space also serves a complimentary continental breakfast that allows guests to meander into the restaurant at their convenience between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. to enjoy beautifully chef-selected charcuterie, European cheeses, and French pastries, as well as an a la carte breakfast menu.
Dinner itself is a special treat. I felt that love from the moment we sat down and saw our names printed at the top of the Flybridge menu, a personal touch that made our reservations even more thoughtful. The restaurant’s executive chef, Peter Annewanter, brings a storied background from several different kitchens (including a Michelin-star restaurant in Austria) and applies those skills to the fresh, Floridabased ingredients served at Flybridge. The chef welcomes guests with two menus: one that is seafood-focused with the option of a meat
dish, and the second that is purely vegetarian, with the option to switch between the menus for certain courses. I chose the seafood course, and it did not disappoint. The fresh daily catches of golden tilefish and grouper against a beurre blanc sauce made for an exquisite meal.
Chef Annewanter and his culinary team showed off their finest skills by presenting beautifully plated, thoughtful dishes within an intimate setting. In fact, the open kitchen where the magic is created is only a few yards away from dinner tables, allowing guests like me to see true culinary masters at work.
The Flybridge dinner menu changes often, inspired by Chef Annewanter’s inclinations and the local ingredients he sources. But no matter the evening, the constant is well-edited dishes that are a nod to Annewater’s love of surprises, mixing tex-
tures, and understated flair.
As my husband and I discovered (and took advantage of!), Yacht Club guests have exclusive access to a slate of amenities. There’s the use of the uber-private Spa Palmera pool, which is normally only available for those who have booked wellness services, as well as a brand-new driving program featuring on-site Aston Martin DBX707 SUVs that are available for a spin around town. In addition, Yacht Club welcomes pets, which are doted on with as much love and affection as their human counterparts.
Yacht Club proved to be more than just a getaway for my husband and me. It allowed us to reconnect individually and with each other, whether during dinner at Flybridge, at Spa Palmera, or on our balcony.
Fresh Catch
It started as a joke. Nearly five years ago, Director of Culinary Operations and Resort Executive Chef Andrew Roenbeck saw two of his sous chefs—both avid fishermen—saunter into work after fishing all night and through the early morning with a local commercial fisherman. He didn’t think the chefs would ever make it through the shift. Turns out, the only payment Roenbeck asked for in exchange for their all-night fishing trip was a few of those fresh catches.
Those early-morning fishing expeditions soon evolved into Roenbeck establishing a deep connection with local fishermen, who today are delivering the resort fresh seafood caught off Florida’s coast, oftentimes just hours before it’s served to Members and guests. Caught the morning of, these fish and seafood are delivered immediately to the resort at the inlet, where Roenbeck’s culinary team meets the fisherman to select the seafood that will be served at their restaurants that day.
“We love telling our guests about the daily catch,” Roenbeck says. “We know not just how it’s prepared, but also the name of the fish, the captain who caught it, his boat’s name, and literally where he caught it. It’s because of these moments that have allowed our daily catches to be one of the best-selling dishes at our restaurants.”

JUPITER DIVERSIONS
About an hour north of The Boca Raton is one of South Florida’s most photogenic areas
BY NILA DO SIMONTO DISCOVER A DISTINCT part of Florida, drive a few miles north to the Town of Jupiter, Florida, where this charming beachfront village unlocks newfound ways to keep its tradition and connection to nature intact while welcoming luxurious amenities into its space. This coastal town is a natural playground because of its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear inlets and diverse rivers. Here are a few highlights and landmarks to experience on your own.
Maltz Jupiter Theatre
When the stage lights flip on and the curtains rise, Jupiter’s beloved theater comes to life. As one of Florida’s preeminent professional theaters, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre embodies the spirit of its community through its creative productions and artistic sensibility. The 617-seat theater is the heartbeat of the city’s cultural arts community, where audiences come to be wowed and entertained with fellow theater lovers through productions like “Beautiful—The Carole King Musical,” “Jersey Boys” and “Oliver!” The Maltz Jupiter Theatre was founded in 1978 as the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre, owned and operated by the actor himself, who called the area home for years. Stars who graced the stage included Martin Sheen, Sarah Jessica Parker, Sally Field and Carol Burnett. And the starstudded performances continue today, with no plans to stop, thanks to an ongoing expansion that will improve production facilities and add educational opportunities.
Juno Beach Pier
There are few things a photograph cannot capture, and one of those is the feeling of experiencing the Florida coast from the deck of a 990-foot pier. The Juno Beach Pier is an iconic structure that unites the state’s best natural resource—the ocean—with water lovers, without the need to get wet. As you walk farther and farther away from the shore onto the end of the pier’s pathway, find yourself getting closer and closer to the ocean’s vastness. Anglers can even enjoy saltwater fishing right on the pier, with a nearby shop open for bait and other gear.
Harbourside Place
In its short existence, Harbourside Place has become one of north Palm Beach County’s most coveted meeting points to enjoy al fresco entertainment, dining and shopping. Opened in 2014 adjacent to the Jupiter Intracoastal Waterway, Harbourside Place offers visitors an array of possibilities for all members of the family (including pets!), from specialty dining to clothing boutiques. Every weekend, the center hosts unique events, including an artisanal market and group yoga classes—all with a coastal-chic flair.
Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum
Built atop a hill with an elevation of 46 feet, the brick-red Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is one of the oldest and most iconic structures in the Palm Beaches. Lit for the first time on July 10, 1860, today it serves as a beacon of history in its new life as the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum. Visitors can climb the 105 spiraling cast-iron stairs (children must be at least 4 feet tall to climb), where they will be treated at the end to breathtaking views of the city and Florida coastline. A guided climbing tour and history lesson on this National Register of Historic Places structure is also available. For those looking to stay closer to the ground, the surrounding Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area has a nature trail that leads to an observation tower overlooking a quiet manatee refuge.
Jonathan Dickinson State Park
Adventurers and nature lovers have met their match at this 10,500-acre diverse park, where those seeking to explore Florida’s waterways and hiking trails will find endless opportunities. Visitors can take advantage of the varied land and water activities that the park has to offer, as well as rangerguided tours of a 1930s pioneer homestead. One of the main features of the park is the Loxahatchee River, which includes a narrow, twisty section that is accessible from the nearby Riverbend Park. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent, as well as a 90-minute boat tour on the Loxahatchee Queen pontoon boat. Landlubbers can explore the many paved and off-road trails, on foot or via a rental bike.

Golf at The Boca Raton has a rich legacy, dating from its very origins.
BY SUSAN GILLISTHE ADS FOR THE Mizner Development Corporation’s “Boca Raton” project promised Boca Raton would be “a rendezvous for sportsmen the country over.” Mizner’s Cloister Inn, now The Boca Raton, actually featured two golf courses when it opened in 1926. The Cloister Course was designed by Donald Ross and stood west of the hotel with holes 1-11, 17 and 18 adjacent to the hotel and holes 12-16 south of Camino Real. It was reserved for hotel guests, and according to the March 1927 Boca Raton Record, was projected to be the “show course of the East Coast next season.” The Ritz-Carlton Course, so named because the Cloister Inn was under Ritz-Carlton management, was where Sugar Sand Park is now. It was designed by William Flynn, according to the Palm Beach Times. The Record reported that the latter course, “because of its sporty nature and splendid condition, is most interesting of the many courses in South Florida” and that it “is said to be the best in the state.” When Sugar Sand Park was under development in 1993, workers found evidence of the 1920s irrigation system there.
The hotel’s first golf pro at both courses was Major Claude C. Wilson, who hailed from the golfing town of Silloth, England, just south of the Scottish border. Wilson was well known in Canada and Florida, having played many tournaments in the latter during the land boom. His resume included golf course design and instructor to the British amateur female golfer Cecil Leitch.
Mizner’s Cloister Inn only opened for two seasons: February-April 1926 and January-April 1927. By late 1927, the Florida land boom bubble had burst, the Mizner Development Corporation (MDC) was bankrupt, and its assets were acquired by original Mizner investor Clarence Geist. This included the oceanfront and Intracoastal front property—which by 1927 no one wanted. For Geist, a serious golfing enthusiast, the major asset of MDC was the Cloister Inn with its golf courses. Geist already had a summertime golf resort at the Seaview in New Jersey, which still operates today. He felt the need for a wintertime resort for his stays at his winter residence in Palm Beach. He employed renowned hotel architects Schultze and Weaver of New York to triple the size of the hotel; the newly enlarged inn opened as the Boca Raton Club in January of 1930. Geist also commissioned William Flynn and Howard Toomey—also legendary course designers—to design two 18-hole courses, one north and one south of today’s Camino Real in what is now Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club. The old Ritz-Carlton course was abandoned at the time.
Aside from its green bean crop, Boca Raton’s principal economic engine during the Depression was the Boca Raton Club, and the beautiful golf courses were a major draw. In 1930, 1927 National Open champion Tommy Armour became the hotel’s golf pro, a position he held until 1955. With the advent of World War II, the little farm town hosted the huge Boca Raton Army Air Field—almost 6,000 acres—between 1942-1947. The military rented the beautiful Club between 1942-1944 while the airfield’s 800 buildings were constructed. Hotel staff hurried to crate the antique décor, roll up the carpets, and wrap the decorative columns in anticipation of the onslaught of servicemen. The Club was probably the most beautiful barracks in the
country. However, the south golf course was abandoned in favor of bivouacs and foxholes, according to the veterans stationed there.
In 1944, hotelier J. Myer Schine purchased the Club as it slowly morphed into the Boca Raton Hotel and Club. Schine and his wife Hildegarde were local residents rooted in the little town, which numbered under 1,000 residents in 1950. The Schines also opened the exclusive private facilities—including the golf course—to the “townies” during the summertime for the first time in the hotel’s history. A photograph in the collections of the Boca Raton Historical Society shows Carl Douglas’s reaction to the

hole-in-one he made on the 14th hole of the course while golfing with his buddies on Memorial Day, 1953. The Society’s collections also feature a photo of yet another interesting guest golfer on the links in February of 1953. Jackie Pung was a barrier-breaking native Hawaiian golfer who competed in the then-recently-formed LPGA’s Cross Country 144 Hole Weathervane tourney held at the hotel that year.
When Armour retired, he was replaced by arguably the most famous golfer of the day, “Slammin’ Sammy” Sam Snead, as pro. Snead was one of the top players in the world, known for his “perfect swing” and for winning events spanning six decades. He is easily regarded as one of the top players of all time. He was well known for a folksy sense of humor and his signature straw porkpie hat. In fact, the
the Boca
Hotel, Louis Adinolfi, reportedly had
a heck of a time getting Snead (who was bald) to remove it in order to give him a trim. Snead continued as pro until 1969. The hotel’s course was dedicated in honor of Armour and Snead in 1987.
The Boca Raton’s “golf game” has adapted over the years. The hotel-side course was redesigned in 1956 by Bobby Jones, by Joe Lee in 1988, and by Gene Bates in 1997, with a “refresher” in 2016 to improve its playability. Apart from the “Ritz-Carlton” course of the 1920s, The Boca Raton has also boasted several “country club” courses over the years. Boca West, now a development on Glades just east of Florida’s Turnpike, began as a golf course for the hotel in the late 1960s. The Boca Raton Country Club was built in 1985 at Congress Avenue north of Clint Moore Road. It was given to the city in 2020.
Today The Boca Raton’s historic par-7, 6,253yard 18-hole course features 12 acres of waters, a dramatic landscape and beautiful vistas. It is proud to be an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The course features a driving range with state-ofthe-art Toptracer technology for those wanting to improve their swings, a pro shop, the course-side restaurant Mulligans, and a food and beverage cart available just for players.
Dream CELEBRATION
A bride and groom mix worlds and cultures at a lavish wedding reception at The Boca Raton
BY NILA DO SIMON PHOTOS BY MUNOZ PHOTOGRAPHYIT SEEMED THAT STEPHANIE AKEUNG and Nirmal Sukhram were destined to connect. Each time Stephanie returned to her family’s home in Guyana, she and Nirmal, a Guyanese entrepreneur, would somehow run into each other, whether it was at the bistro where she was working or at a mutual friend’s baby shower or at another random location within the capital city of Georgetown.
After nearly three years of long-distance dating—which included Nirmal frequently visiting Stephanie at her South Florida home, and Stephanie flying to Guyana—Nirmal proposed to his future wife at dinner at Gianni’s Restaurant in Miami’s Villa Casa Casuarina with the words “Will you marry me?” strewn across her dessert plate in rose petals.
In selecting the venue for their May 16, 2022 wedding reception, the couple wanted a backdrop that would complement their Hindu ceremony held the day before at a nearby temple. Whereas the temple offered them an auspicious place to perform their rituals for a blessed marriage, The Boca Raton allowed them to have, in their words, “a dream Guyanese reception.”
“Being from the Caribbean, our food and music tastes are very different,” Nirmal says. “And The Boca Raton embraced that. They allowed us to fly in our favorite performers, some of whom were of Guyanese background, and gave us flexibility with our vendors.”
After the couple prepped for the wedding in their respective quarters, which included
FLORAL DESIGN
Few things have the power to transform a wedding like flowers. As the team at Boca By Design puts it, “They create a different atmosphere and fulfill the dream the bride has,” says Lisa Coccoli, the director of sales and operations at Boca By Design. “The vision and aromas last forever.”
Led by Floral Manager Adriana Macias, the floral design team sources the finest flowers from all over the world, including Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Bangkok, New Zealand and Australia. The unique arrangements grace a range of events at The Boca Raton, from weddings to private ceremonies to Club events.
Boca By Design also hosts a monthly floral design workshop at the Club, where attendees can learn techniques that will allow them to make arrangements at home and tips to care for the flowers so they last longer. Each class gives guests a basic understanding of how to make an arrangement from beginning to end, as well as create their own style. The way Macias sees it, floral arrangements are a tangible way to display individuality: “Flowers reflect the insights of each person, their personality, their feelings and their emotions. And they are beautiful.”

an elaborate brunch along with dressers and valets, they moved to The Cathedral room, where Stephanie’s mom and micropoodle, Louie, awaited to walk her into the magical space. Throughout the night, the entire room—filled with 250 of their closest friends and family—exploded with entertainment, including by Ravi B, a Trinidadian chutney musician; Jeffery Iqbal, a Bollywood singer; Raymond Ramnarine, a chutney soca and Bollywood singer from Trinidad & Tobago; Savita Singh, a singer who won season two of Guyana’s “Emerging Voices” contest; and belly dancer Valentina Geraldo.
The self-described foodies wanted the night to be a display of their love of flavor and eclectic palates, which included lamb, chicken, salmon, and vegetarian foods like Asian-inspired fried rice. Stephanie emphasized to the culinary team how important it was for Nirmal, a vegan, to be blown away by the meatless options. “America can have a scarcity of flavorful vegan meals, but The Boca Raton chefs took my opinion and made my husband very happy,” she says. “In addition, I was also able to offer my guests a great menu with delicious options that catered to everyone’s dietary restrictions and preferences.”
A year after their wedding and after some time to reflect, the couple still looks back at fond memories of the evening. “We wouldn’t change a thing about it,” Nirmal says.
Leaders in real estate
Nothing defines the luxury lifestyle like the place you call home. From waterfront estates to chic downtown condos, these expert real estate professionals help buyers and sellers make the best deals in paradise.
A Boca Raton native, Matthew Bachrad has almost two decades of experience selling luxury real estate in New York City and South Florida. Danielle Stern, a real estate contract expert from London via Los Angeles, is the other half of the Your Luxury Listing Group, working under the William Raveis Brokerage, the No. 1 independent family-owned real estate company in the northeast and Florida.
Bachrad and Stern recently represented the buyer and seller on an oceanfront property in Highland Beach that sold for just under $10 million. A $13.4 million condo sale in Manhattan’s One57 Building adds to their list of recent transactions, coincidentally sold to a local Boca Raton buyer.
As a duo with extensive design and construction knowledge, they avail their clients of a plethora of resources, from architects to builders and decorators, bringing a full scope of services to every deal. “Matthew has a unique vision of what a house could or should be. His design sense is immaculate and his real estate knowledge encyclopedic,” says one client.
“We personally show all our own listings and never send assistants to do our work. We are completely involved in every aspect of a deal and are always accessible to our clients,” says Danielle.
“For us, luxury is a lifestyle, not a dollar sign. Luxury real estate can be a villa in a country club community, a waterfront condo or large estate home—all of which we have extensive expertise in and are proud to sell. We are the Luxury Real Estate Dream Team you’ve been searching for,” they proudly state.

Jonathan G. Postma Broker Coldwell Banker
Jonathan Postma had an early appreciation for the finer things in life, growing up with a family in the yacht industry. His own business mind, cultivated at George Washington University, led him to the residential real estate profession with the reality that not everyone needs a yacht, but everyone needs a place to call home.
“I have set up a team at Coldwell Banker to accommodate any kind of client regardless of their needs, from condos to waterfront mansions, though luxury resort/ waterfront properties are my forte,” says Postma, whose office is strategically located at The Boca Raton. “If you drew a 10-mile radius circle around the resort, I handle all of those properties, including golf communities and oceanfront, however my team covers everything from Palm Beach to South Beach,” he explains.
“My clients know that I am ‘in the know’ whether providing information about the best restaurants, club memberships and the best school districts for their kids to attend. I have clients that I have sold over a dozen homes to, whether upsizing, downsizing, or adding vacation homes to their portfolios. I enjoy the repeat business and the trust my clients have in me. Anyone can sell you a home. I make it a point to be an authority on placing personalities with lifestyles,” Postma says. “I find out what makes the client tick and I match them with a home that suits their needs and dreams.”

Geri Penniman Estate Agent Premier Estate Properties
A top-tier agent with Premier Estate Properties, Geri Penniman is ranked among the top 1 percent of real estate professionals nationally—and highly respected for her inside knowledge of some of Boca Raton’s most exclusive estate enclaves, including Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club. The reasons are quite simple.
Geri provides her esteemed buyers and sellers with the value of experience accrued over more than 30 years. While Geri has achieved well over $400 million in career sales, and just recently closed an additional four sales in six weeks alone, she is never about volume. Her focus is highly personal, very one-on-one.
Geri explains it this way: “My role is that of a trusted resource for luxury real estate. I help my buyers and sellers effectively navigate a complex market and guide them in key decisions to ensure that they derive the greatest possible benefit, the highest return on investment. My relationships with my clients go well beyond closing, and may even include tax and legal referrals. Many of them I have worked with time and again.”

“Combining our talents and strengths as the Wilson Prego Group at Douglas Elliman serves both our customers and ourselves,” explains Prego, who has more than 20 years of real estate expertise.
“The knowledge gained from our past sales and contract negotiations is invaluable for our clients’ best results. With our partnership we can maintain a team to lead-generate— specifically to find qualified buyers for our properties, enabling us to sell them more quickly. Having twice the sphere of influence to generate our listings and leverage our group resources to execute complex marketing strategies, we are able to be in multiple places at once, handling multiple inquiries,” says Prego.
Eric Prego and Jeff Wilson look at every deal wearing every hat from their own personal experiences as the buyer, the seller, the flipper and the broker.
“I love helping people achieve success and reach their real estate goals by creating the life they want. That includes finding my clients their piece of paradise as they transition into their next home,” Wilson says.
