LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends IN THIS LATEST EDITION of 1926, we celebrate all The Boca Raton has to offer in the summer months and beyond. A New Golden Era of our iconic club and resort continues to evolve, offering members and resort guests exceptional new experiences, in addition to familiar favorites. From the dazzling Harborside Pool Club to incredible dining—and the wide array of events and programming—each season is marked by milestone moments and new traditions. Let us help you plan your social calendar, from summer soirees and wellness classes, to fall festivities leading up to Thanksgiving weekend. Our culinary options continue to expand; we’ve introduced new fine dining restaurants, casual restaurants, and lounges featuring innovative cocktails and extensive wine lists. Learn about our newest options, including the third signature concept in partnership with Major Food Group, Principessa Ristorante, lakeside at Cloister. Get to know The Boca Raton’s tastemakers—savvy experts on our food and beverage team who shape the dining experience. A recent addition, Director of Wine Cassandra Felix, is an Advanced Sommelier who is on a mission to innovate our wine collection. Meet one of our globally acclaimed sweets specialists, Executive Pastry Chef Sebastien Feneyrol, who shares a peek at what is in store for dessert lovers, including our new chocolate and macaron shop, Maison Rose. The Boca Raton is committed to sourcing fresh produce and supporting local growers, allowing us to provide a farm to fork experience. Take a look at the community partnership we have with Swank Specialty Produce, nearby in Loxahatchee, Florida. As part of our ongoing physical transformation, we have partnered with top innovators in the industry. This includes Rockwell Group, an award-winning architecture and design firm specializing in hospitality and culture. Learn what inspired Rockwell Group when they set out to design several of our spaces, including our highly anticipated fifth hotel, The Boca Raton Tower. We look forward to sharing the transformed Tower’s entirely new and elevated perspective on luxury travel when we open this summer. We hope this edition of 1926 serves as a helpful resource, and a wealth of inspiration for the months ahead. Whether you are a guest or a Club member, there has never been a better time to enjoy our waterfront oasis and experience the extraordinary.

DEBORAH SPONDER, SPONDER GALLERY What started out as a generous installation of 15 sculptures throughout the property grounds in 2009 has ballooned into a far-reaching, collaborative relationship with the Sponder Gallery, which continues to showcase important works of art in its on-property gallery. Deborah Sponder, president of Sponder Gallery, details the decadesplus relationship with The Boca Raton and highlights an intriguing new art piece found on the property. How did the relationship with The Boca Raton begin? The gallery has been based in Boca Raton since 1989, and the Sponder family have been Club members for more than 30 years. We’ve expanded our resort program over time, beginning in 2009, to include paintings, prints and mixedmedia works. We believe in the transformative properties of art, and as art dealers, we have a responsibility to present our artists’ works in the best possible way. This location is the ideal example, as we have created an unexpected aesthetic by placing our contemporary artworks in a historic atmosphere, while adding an interactive amenity for guests and members. Self-guided and docent-led tours are available. Recently, we collaborated with designer Colin Cowie on

Gino Miles’ Nurture, 2021, bronze

the Beach Club refresh, and architecture firm Rockwell Group on various Harborside redesign projects. Where can we find Sponder Gallery? Our gallery space has moved to the retail hallway connecting the Cloister lobby to Mizner Center, directly across from MB Supper Club. This venue provides museumquality works for acquisition, while adding an educational and cultural enhancement to the property. Tell us more about the Gino Miles piece, “Nurture, 2021.” “Nurture” was created by Gino Miles and was installed in

December 2021, just in time for the resort and club’s ribbon cutting. It is at Harborside, inside the main entry courtyard, where we have a sculpture garden with four pieces by rotating artists. Miles works primarily in fabricated stainless steel and bronze, focusing on elegant minimalism with cleanliness of line and shape. Many of Miles’ sculptures are kinetic and can be turned, rotated or even spun, allowing observers to change the piece at their leisure and experience it from a different viewpoint. Inspired by the meandering and knotting of morning glory vines, he is also fascinated by nature’s ability to weave itself so exquisitely into a

knot—a historic symbol of unity and connection. In addition, Miles’ work draws from studies of ancient cultures in Italy and Greece, including the ancient columns that symbolize humanity’s passage through time. Call 561/350-0004 for gallery hours.

HE BOCA RATON IS LAVISHING extra-special care to

one of its most important natural assets: the beach. A half-mile long, the private beach will undergo a nearly $1.2 million renovation and debut a new layout this fall. The beach will be fully reimagined, says Daniel Hostettler, the property’s President & CEO. “The beach will be fully reimagined,” Hostettler says. “Since The Boca Raton Beach Club is positioned around the beach, we felt it was time to make it a five-star experience.” Designed to be family-friendly and elevated, with a St. Barth-style design, the renovation includes daily grooming of the sand, as well as bifurcating the beach into a space for Club members and a separate area for resort guests. At the center of the beach, a gaming area will offer various options, including sand volleyball courts, beach Jenga and a play section. The beach will continue to feature watersports and activities, such as Hobie Cats, boogie board rentals and more. Adding to the existing cabana collection at the pool will be the introduction of luxury cabanas on the beach. The 10 new bi-level beach cabanas are raised on stilts with daybeds and chaise lounges. A new beach food and beverage operation will be able to effectively and efficiently service 1,000 lounge chairs (versus today’s infrastructure that allows for 600-700 chairs). A new menu will focus on Latin American-inspired fare, complete with an array of healthy and delicious taco, ceviche and margarita options by Chef Gonzalo Rivera, protégé of famed chef Michael Mina. “We realized that the entire impetus in coming here for a visit is the beach,” Hostettler says. “It has just surely evolved over the years, and now it’s going to become a phenomenal beach experience.”

G O LF G O ES V I RT UA L Imagine being able to see your golf ball’s trajectory within nanoseconds of hitting the ball. The opportunity to view the actual curvature and path are mind-blowing possibilities thanks to the advancement of Toptracer, technology that tracks golf shots and projects the trajectory and a slew of other statistics onto a screen. Initially accessible to television viewers who were cheering on their favorite golfer on the screen, Toptracer has now become a coveted tool at select courses around the globe. For golfers and non-golfers alike, Toptracer has been a ubiquitous part of televised golf for years. The thin blue line that appears on the television screen once a golfer hits a ball has become a necessary instrument to enhance the viewing experience. And now that same technology is available to players at The Boca Raton, which features 18 hitting stations and 18 consoles.

With state-of-the-art, cutting-edge graphics that use multiple cameras, players can monitor and assess their shots, plus play games and golf with friends both in person and virtually. “It’s a very, very social game,” says Andrew Huebner, the property’s director of recreation. “Toptracer caters to all types of people, from the serious golfer to the new one. It allows a player who does not have a lot of time to enjoy a quick round. It’s a fun environment for individualized play for adults and kids. There are options to play golfing games in your bay, like closest to the pin, longest-drive contests and even Go Fish.” At the practice facility on the driving range, the Toptracer bays can be reserved at the pro shop.

seriously; after all, it has a history of elite names on the property’s courts, including the legendary Fred Perry, winner of the first career grand slam, as the club’s first director of tennis. In addition, Silver and his team have created adult and junior programming for ages 3 and up, and have created social events centered around tennis, including monthly round-robin play and holiday special events like Valentine’s Day. Adding to the slate of racquet offerings are four courts and three pros dedicated to pickleball, a sport Silver notes has exploded in popularity over the years. “Our goal is to get everybody playing who wants to play,” says Silver. For reservations, please call 561/447-3141.

With a full-service concierge team that is equipped to arrange games, private lessons and court reservations, tennis players—both members and guests alike—have little to worry about other than the enjoyment of the sport itself. For visitors, the concierge team can even plan a tennis vacation based on a guest’s skill level, interest and the amount of tennis he or she wants to play, says Erik Silver, the director of tennis. INSPIRED BY

Cassandra Felix Wine Director, The Boca Raton

A

T THE FOREFRONT, my

goal is to have The Boca Raton house the most iconic wine programs in the world,” says Cassandra Felix, the property’s new wine director. If that sounds like an ambitious goal, then perhaps it’s only proper that we introduce the mastermind behind it. Felix is an advanced sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers and brings more than a decade of professional experience in wine and spirits to The Boca Raton. Reared and educated in South Florida, Felix most recently worked in Napa Valley as a brand director for Brendel, launching a new collection of distinct Napa Valley wines. In her appointment as The Boca Raton’s wine director, Felix returns to her Sunshine State roots to oversee the multiple dining concepts on the property.

Tell us how your wine career began. While studying at Palm Beach Atlantic University, I started working at The Breakers as a server. During one slow summer, I remember putting bottles of wine away and organizing them on shelves. I would read the labels, understand how the bottles were categorized, and gain a fundamental base about wines through that simple task. I was fortunate that I had mentors who saw my potential and talent, and advanced it. They encouraged me to enroll in The Breakers’ wine program, where I furthered my studies to eventually became a sommelier. What was the experience like working in Napa Valley with some of the world’s most premier winemakers? I was in an environment where wine was the sole focus, and it felt so educational and organic. But in my heart, I’m a sommelier who loves working in hospitality and sharing my wine knowledge with others, so it was important for me to get back to a place where I’m working with guests and enhancing their food and beverage experiences. What are some key components in your role of wine director? I’m looking to elevate our wine selection, while still keeping the integrity of each individual restaurant. Each of our

42

1926/The Boca Raton

restaurants have their own personalities, so it’s important that my team and I find wines and spirits that connect with those individual dining experiences. How do you perceive accessibility and diversity in the wine industry, and how does that affect how you approach the future of wine? I’m incredibly grateful to be part of a diverse team at The Boca Raton; It’s an inclusive environment here. In contrast, I saw firsthand how hard my mom—a Black woman from Haiti— had to work to become a registered nurse and send my brother and me to the best schools she could afford. So, I don’t take it for granted … and organizations like The Roots Fund are opening up for the Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) community. While we still have some time to go before there’s equality in this field, I believe it’s getting better. I had mentors who believed in me and my talents, and I hope to one day be a mentor to others. What do you love about the wine industry? Wine incorporates so much more than taste. There’s history, geology, chemistry and so much more that goes into a complete understanding of wine. I’m fascinated by it all.

Sebastien Feneyrol

Executive Pastry Chef, The Boca Raton

H

OW SWEET IT IS TO BE Sebastien

Feneyrol, The Boca Raton’s executive pastry chef and one of the masterminds behind the new Maison Rose confectioner’s shop. The French-born Feneyrol is a classically trained dessert artist, whose highly touted resume begins at two prestigious brands, Ladurée macaron shop in Paris and Maison Pic, the latter of which saw him work under famed chef AnneSophie Pic. He eventually made his way to Florida to lead the pastry teams at distinguished restaurants that included Miami’s Villa Azur, Juvia and Barton G. Today, Feneyrol brings a collaborative spirit to The Boca Raton’s pastry team, where he marries his French technique with lively Florida flavors.

How would you describe your creation process? Teamwork plus an exchange of ideas will yield great results. It’s an old school idea, but it has worked for me from my days with chef Anne-Sophie Pic, whose restaurant Maison Pic earned three Michelin stars, and I continue it now. I don’t create any recipe by myself and expect the chefs to execute my idea. Instead, my team and I build a recipe together. The process is very open-ended, and we are open to an exchange of ideas.

What are some recent memorable moments that you and The Boca Raton pastry team have created? There was a beautiful Go Pink charity dinner and gala that we hosted. Our team made several pink flowers for a dessert, after Executive Chef Andy Roenbeck came up with a great concept. For a week, my team was piping and piping to make our designs look like flowers. It took about 30 minutes to make one rose. It’s really time-consuming, but the result was amazing. In the end, it was really an impressive moment for the event, and I heard it was the talk of the evening. Tell us how Maison Rose was born. My background includes working at Ladurée in Paris, the worldrenowned macaron shop. So I have a solid foundation in not only the creation of a macaron, but the happy feeling that customers receive in the shopping and dining experience. When our President Daniel Hostettler approached me with the idea of launching Maison Rose, we knew that we could re-create that feeling with a gourmet macaron and chocolate shop here in Cloister and do it on our terms and with our reimagination. What can we expect at Maison Rose? There are about 20 different types of artisan chocolate truffles and various flavors of macarons, some of which are wrapped in gold leaf. Both bonbons and macaron service are presented by a staff member donned in white gloves. We have grab-and-go for certain sweets, and velvety hot cocoa in addition to an eyecatching chocolate display window. Our Bocaroons date back to the days of Addison Mizner, who was a fan of the resort chef’s macaroons with fresh-shaved coconut and orange essence. The shop itself is designed to look like a traditional French café, classic and elegant, with marble floors and countertops, colorful Boca pink high-lacquer finish and glass-enclosed cases chilled to showcase the confections. What makes the macarons at the Maison Rose an exceptional dessert? The macarons are fresh and designed with beautiful colors and artistry, using only top-quality ingredients. We use a jam for the fruit filling, and the chocolate filling is like a ganache. The macarons are tender and moist, with a chocolate shell exterior that is crunchy.

WELLNESS

H

upon excellence? If you ask Vanessa Carter, spa director at Spa Palmera, you go back to basics. With authentic Moorish architecture—from cathedral ceilings to dramatic arches—modeled after the Alhambra Palace in Spain, Spa Palmera has long emitted an air of exotic majesty. Carter wanted to continue that connection to ancient times by transporting guests through various senses, including incorporating oils and ingredients found within the Alhambra Palace Gardens. “We created three distinctive oils—damask rose, yuzu and lemongrass, and amber and pine—that are representative of the destination,” Carter says. “And by incorporating these oils throughout the spa treatments, we can further enhance the full-circle journey.” New treatments include holistic sensorial experiences. A 90-minute sound therapy treatment begins with listening to crystal bowls. Then, guests enjoy a relaxing massage that incorporates sound therapy, a practice that has been shown to improve well-being and focus. Carter says, “This treatment takes you to Cloud 9, and then the cell generation starts happening. It will take your mind and body to another level.” There’s also a new 90-minute sensory awakening treatment meant to invigorate guests, a session that includes a deep tissue massage with aromatic oils like peppermint, eucalyptus and basil, plus a hot and cold therapy with volcanic stones and lapis lazuli. At the end of the treatment, guests will be refreshed and energized. The new treatments come as the 50,000-square-foot spa unveils its latest facelift under the design direction of the renowned visual presenter Colin Cowie. Infusing a contemporary feel to the space while keeping its Moorish design roots, the spa’s interior has been painted a pearl white to match the Cloister’s recently painted coastal white exterior. The ritual bath area, one of the marquee spaces at the spa, has also reopened with new treatments and enhancements. The therapeutic area features an aroma bath, Swiss shower, plunge pool and Jacuzzi. New ritual bath options include treatment with CBD oil used to alleviate aches and pains, as well as a treatment called Royal Bath with pink Himalayan salt, specially mixed body scrub, cold compresses with damask rose oil and choice of antioxidant cold teas with either hibiscus or rose. Duke Center for Chiropractic Sports & Spine C.A.R.E. The Boca Raton welcomes Dr. Scott Duke’s chiropractic care

Tell us more about your focus. I am a diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Sports Physicians, specializing in non-surgical sports medicine, one of only 300 licensed and active worldwide. Over the years, I have become an expert in healing soft tissue injuries, such as rips, tears and strains to muscles, tendons and ligaments. For more than 15 years, I held the title of medical captain and team physician for the pro athlete field in the New York City Marathon. My background in sports medicine, kinesiology, strength and conditioning, and biomechanics enables me to not only effectively treat my patients, but also enhance their athletic performance and prevent further injuries. Why bring your world-class services to The Boca Raton? I have spent decades of my life with total focus, empowering my patients to lead healthy lifestyles, encouraging them to stay active, even while injured, helping them heal those injuries they thought were chronic. What better place than The Boca Raton to work with people who share the same ethos of living and, most importantly, maintaining a healthy lifestyle?

What treatments do you have for tennis players and golfers? Playing sports on a weekly and daily basis, like tennis and golf, creates repetitive trauma to our bodies. Eventually our bodies break down because we can’t handle the strain we place on them. My treatments are always all-inclusive, meaning if the injury requires a specific modality, I simply use it. Types of treatment I perform are Shockwave, Graston Instrumentation, Active Release Technique, Spinal Decompression, RockTape, neuromuscular mobility and strengthening/flexibility routines, just to name a few. To keep people in the game, I provide my patients with self-management routines to support their bodies, so they can continue to play sports. I create a specific skill set of spinal mobility routines, stretching exercises, foam rolling and strengthening techniques tailor-made for their posture and sport to prevent injury. Even if members and guests are not athletes, how can a visit at Duke Center benefit them? My motto has always been, you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to be treated like one. Our bodies break down no matter what age, occupation or posture. Sometimes it’s the most innocent of movements that debilitates our bodies. Regular visits to a sports-minded physician is paramount. In my opinion, the best time to seek treatment is when you are not injured. Think of me as your health and wellness advisor. Someone willing to speak with your primary physicians, personal trainers, massage therapists, acupuncturists and other health care professionals as a partner to help optimize your well-being.

CHESAPEAKE FINANCIAL PLANNING & TAX SERVICES

“Women need to be involved in their financial plans and have an understanding of where all of their assets are, and what they are used for,” says Certified Financial Planner™ and Certified Financial Fiduciary Elizabeth Bennett. As a woman who has reared a child, been through a divorce and is working toward her own financial future, she forges a relationship with her clients from her own personal experiences. “You need be in control of your finances and not leave that responsibility to someone else,” she cautions. “Knowing the types of investments that you have, the log-ins for your accounts, and sharing that information with your spouse is very important. Being involved in reviews with your financial advisor and understanding how to access those assets is imperative,” Bennett says. “Taking responsibility for your financial wellbeing, starting at a young age, is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself. You should take advantage of your employer’s retirement plan, understand what your shortterm savings need to look like and what your assets’ tax implications are. Be aware of your spending habits and where all of your money is going, whether you are single or married. As women, we know the value of delegating. My advice is to take one thing off of your plate and reach out to an advisor to get your financial house in order with someone you can trust. I am here for you,” she says.

I

T HAD TO HAVE BEEN the ninth time around the lazy river. Or was it the fifth time spraying their grandpa with the water cannons found on the pirate ship S.S. Johnnie Brown? (In my 3-year-old son’s defense, grandpa was an easy target.) Either way, I started losing track of when the kids’ laughter reached their highest decibel, and just began enjoying the unending moments of joyful merriment at Harborside Pool Club. Part of the resort and club’s $200 million renovation, Harborside Pool Club is a luxurious outdoor oasis set among tropical palms and an atmosphere of subtle elegance. As its name implies, the pool club is home to three pools, a 450-foot lazy river and water slides, plus a Pool Bar serving cocktails and healthy bites. But what makes the Pool Club

60

1926/The Boca Raton

special is The Boca Raton’s signature stamp on a fun, easy and elevated experience. Luxury cabanas await with personalized butler service, an adults-only pool is situated at a distance from the family area, and an air of sophistication wafts through the entire space. Intent upon servicing every type of vacationer and Club member—from multigenerational trips to romantic, adults-oriented reprieves—Harborside Pool Club takes water-related diversions to a new level. Overlooking Lake Boca Raton, Harborside Pool Club is best experienced through the eyes of ageless adventure seekers. In my case, through my 5-year-old daughter, her 3-yearold brother and their forever-young grandpa, a former triathlete who can still do laps around us in the pool. After checking into our private cabana in the family area, our

first stop was the replica pirate ship called the S.S. Johnnie Brown. The zero-depth entry provided ease and comfort for all guests, including an unsuspecting grandma who ended up getting gently sprayed by a water cannon from my daughter—friendly fire, as it’s called in these parts. After the grandparents took refuge at the nearby bench, the kids took it as a sign that an all-out siege had been green-lighted against, well, me. “Watch out below,” they yelled. After the rather lopsided battle ended, the kids found themselves on S.S. Johnnie Brown’s age-appropriate water slides for the toddlers and pre-schoolers, happily sliding down after being given the ultimatum of walking the plank or else. Perhaps the most epic kids-centric amenities at Harborside Pool Club are the two three-story water slides.

1926/The Boca Raton

61

My kids, too young and short to careen down the tall slides, watched in awe as the big kids (and some adults) took their turns on the supervised slides. If I’m being honest, so did I. After all, we never grow tired of adventure, do we? What made our stay extra-special was the option to book a family cabana. It provided a necessary shaded and ventilated space to relax in between activities. Large enough to house a party of five (with room to spare), the private cabanas overlook the family pool at an elevated height. Inside the open-air space was plush seating (including two chaise lounges), a flat-screen TV, complimentary waters and soft drinks in a mini-fridge, and an open invitation to relax in a quiet outdoor corner. A private butler was our attendant for the entire day for everything we needed, from extra towels to hand-delivered food service (Pro tip: Order the tacos. You won’t be disappointed in how light yet flavorful they are). She even inquired if she could connect us to a family in the adjacent cabana, who it turned out had several common interests with us. No trip to Harborside Pool Club would be complete without floating along the 450-foot lazy river. The option of inflatable tubes added an easy mode of transportation, especially as I lost count of our travels, closed my eyes and floated on round-whoknows-what. If Harborside Pool Club sounds like an incredible space thus far, just wait. Later this year, it will become even more robust. An expansion plan includes a FlowRider surf wave simulator, a teen lounge with mocktails and more, retail experiences and new waterfront dining. I can only imagine how excited my kids will be to experience the next phase.

BANYAN BUNCH CHILDREN’S PROGRAM It’s hard to discern who the Banyan Bunch children’s programming benefits more: the kids or the parents. Considered one of the must-do family amenities at Harborside Pool Club, Banyan Bunch is a year-round daily drop-off kids program that’s known for its fun, dynamic and enriching experiences for kids from ages 4 to 12. The 2,300-square-foot kids’ club (right) is home to an indoor play space (with an artificial treehouse in the center of the room), plus an outdoor

pirates-themed playground that’s complete with a splash pad and replica pirate ship. Banyan Bunch is a dedicated service with high-level programming designed to enrich children’s lives during their stays. The schedule of activities includes a rotation of fun and educational youth-specific programming such as yoga, art, physical exercise, scavenger hunts, and nature walks. With a no-electronics policy, Banyan Bunch brings a renewed focus on peer-to-peer activities. In addition to the daily drop-off option, this summer, Banyan Bunch is adding a robust slate of programming to its summer camp with weekly themes and related activities. Available Monday through Saturday from May 30 to August 13, families can register kids for weeklong, half-day or full-day sessions. Weekly themes are fun and age-appropriate, and may include a focus on superheroes, under the sea and carnival. The program is based on four key areas: explore, create, discover and imagine, says Jillian Loeffler, director

of youth and family proTo reserve a cabana at Harborside Pool Club, gramming. With “discover,” STEM-related activities will engage kids to think and innovate. And “imagine” will encourage free play. And that’s not all for the family-oriented summer festivities at Harborside. For the more sports-oriented young teen, there will also be sports camp options with specialized instruction focusing on golf, tennis and beach volleyball. In addition, there will be evening family programs—such as movies by the pool—so families can reconnect after an active, sun-filled day.

NE OF THE GREATEST CHALLENGES any artist can face is being asked to reimagine an icon. In this case, the artist was Rockwell Group, a vanguard of interior, product and architectural design whose diverse portfolio includes noted hotels and restaurants, as well as high-end residential projects. Charged with re-creating the interiors of The Boca Raton, Rockwell viewed its mission not just as a challenge, but an honor. The New York-based firm was tasked with not only redesigning several spaces within the nearly 100-year-old property built by legendary Addison Mizner, but also creating a cohesive fabric that unites all areas of the 200-acre property. “It’s thrilling to restore the property almost a century later,” says David Rockwell, founder of the firm and one of the world’s most celebrated architects and designers. “As designers, Rockwell Group was in the unique position to create a narrative that’s relevant today and celebrates Mizner’s original vision.” And if anyone were to understand the tenderness and love that is needed to restore a masterpiece, it’s Rockwell. His firm’s renovation of New York’s Grand Central Station earned a Presidential Design Award, and Rockwell Group has been the go-to designer for lauded chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s restaurants and properties around the globe. One of the firm’s most exciting assignments was reconfiguring the guestrooms at Tower. Built in 1969, Tower is the tallest building in Palm Beach County, and features 224 guestrooms and suites. The building includes views of either the ocean and Lake Boca Raton, or a stunning sunset.

66

1926/The Boca Raton

“Tower is the tallest building in Boca Raton, with incredible views of Lake Boca and beyond,” says Shawn Sullivan, partner at Rockwell Group. “We reconfigured the guestrooms to really take advantage of the spectacular 360-degree vistas.” Rockwell Group gave the guestrooms a contemporary coastal feel, complete with custom palm leaf-inspired carpet and warm wood accents. Custom lights with oil-rubbed bronze accents add a layer of modern contrast, and glossy grey paint on the guestroom ceilings draws daylight further into the room and reflects the blue water outside the windows. Floridian-inspired artwork throughout the guestrooms adds pops of color and creates a residential feel. The 23rd-floor penthouse suite builds on the contemporary, coastal language developed for the guestroom. As guests enter

the double doors of the suite, they have uninterrupted views of the Intracoastal Waterway. The suite includes three guestrooms with separate entrances and a six-seat dining area. The core living area is wrapped in fluted wood panels and features hand-tufted area rugs and pendant lights. Motorized shades and drapery control the ambiance and daylight. In the bedrooms, a backlit woven-cane screen serves as a headboard. Custom sliding wood doors with fluted glass infill divide the bedroom from the walk-in closet. In addition to Tower, Rockwell Group designed several of The Boca Raton’s dining options, including Palm Court, Principessa, Sadelle’s and The Flamingo Grill. Inspired to rethink the spaces for cohesion

and luxury, Mizner’s Spanish Colonial design ideals were embraced, to enhance views out to Lake Boca Raton and return the property to A New Golden Era. The result? Spaces that have their own essence with subtle, connecting threads linked to the property’s origins. A collaborative effort, Rockwell Group has partnered closely with South Florida-based architecture and design firm GarciaStromberg on realization of the project—including execution of design vision, administration of construction and entitlements process. For Palm Court, considered the main social area of the property, the designers emphasized its standing as the heart of the resort by creating

glazed arches framed in black steel—a contemporary interpretation of the arches found throughout the property—that enhance views out to the lake. “Our goal was to create a welcoming lobby and lounge that restores the building’s original courtyard experience,” Sullivan explains. “Portals enhance views out to the lake and encourage the connection between indoors and out. We also restored and relocated two original large-scale stained-glass windows, which were previously in former restaurant Bar Luna.” For Principessa Ristorante, it was paramount to transport diners to lakeside dining on the shores of a northern Italian villa. Rockwell Group brought forth elegance and modern touches, including a rich jeweltone color palette, like the burgundy leather banquettes in the main dining space. There’s also a decanting station on one wall that brings a sense of theater. With Sadelle’s, in the main dining room, Rockwell Group wrapped the room in blue-wood paneling over the existing plaster walls and added antique mirrors and custom light fixtures behind banquette seating. A terrazzo tile floor in a parquet pattern is a muted backdrop for pops of Floridian garden motifs. The

dining room leads to an all-glass conservatory with a glowing trellis ceiling and arched, blackened steel details. The Flamingo Grill represents a classic Florida restaurant and members-only club, thanks to its tropical feel. In the interior dining room, which was inspired by local flora and fauna, Rockwell Group enhanced the existing vaulted ceiling by adding white painted wood louvers along the perimeter. The outdoor terrace is shaded by large trees and has its own bar. Even with their reimagined perspectives, Rockwell Group was intent on one thing: Staying true to the integrity of Addison Mizner’s original designs. In order to do so, The Boca Raton team and GarciaStromberg worked closely with The Boca Raton Historical Society to ensure authenticity in the project. “Today’s design concept complements the historic façade and interiors with a palette of richly textured materials and contemporary furnishings that enhance the juxtaposition of modern and traditional,” Rockwell says. “We want our designs to lead members and guests on a journey of discovery, and for them to create shared memories in the spaces. The Boca Raton has a sense of grandeur that visually draws visitors into each space.”

T

HE BOCA RATON IS STUNNING and thoroughly in step—or ahead of— contemporary standards in luxury and style. But at its heart is a deep connection to an era once hailed as “The Good Life,” when ladies, gentlemen and everybody dressed formally for dinner, when there was proper yachting attire, when “out on the town” meant elegant nightclubs, when membership had its privileges—and its obligations. It was a time of glamour, living well, fun and romance, all undercurrents running throughout the Club and resort, but especially in its restaurants. Reformatted and completely new dining options have not only elevated the property’s culinary arts and introduced a world of flavor, but they’ve also given the property an authentic opportunity to celebrate what it’s calling A New Golden Era. To create several new food and beverage experiences, The Boca Raton challenged its culinary team, led by Chef Andrew Roenbeck, the director of culinary operations and resort executive chef, to rethink how to present the evolution through taste. Dining concepts were revamped, retooled and newly created, presenting a slate of offerings that is distinctly The Boca Raton. To be the best, one has to work with the best. That’s why they decided to partner with Major Food Group on four signature dining concepts launched and coming soon to the Club and resort. Led by Mario Carbone, Jeff Zalaznick and Rich Torrisi, Major Food Group has built one of the most acclaimed hospitality groups in the world in less than a decade. They have pioneered an energetic, refined style of dining at such restaurants as Carbone, developed dynamic concepts across genres, and forged groundbreaking partnerships with a range of noted organizations, including the Brooklyn Nets, Kith Paris, and now, The Boca Raton. Major Food Group’s four signature restaurants include The Flamingo Grill, Sadelle’s, Principessa Ristorante and a Japanese dining concept (to open later this year). Principessa Ristorante is an Italian dining destination that overlooks Lake Boca Raton. With

its waterfront location, expansive alfresco seating and historic 1930s interior showcasing contemporary elegance, Principessa Ristorante channels the grand villas and resorts of Lake Como. The menu features twists on traditional Italian cuisine, including grilled branzino with castelvetrano olives, meatballs valdostana and bistecca Fiorentina. Among the restaurant’s noted offerings is a range of handmade fresh pastas, gelato selections and an extensive wine list. “Guests of Principessa Ristorante savor authentic dishes in a setting that is never stiff, always celebratory,” says Mario Carbone, managing partner of Major Food Group. “Our menu is served with distinct grand elegance and flawless service, which has become the hallmark of our partnership with The Boca Raton.” Designed by architecture firm Rockwell Group, Principessa’s main dining room celebrates the historic timber ceiling beams and floor-toceiling arched windows that pull guests to the dreamy outdoor waterscape. Luxurious textures include brass accents, Murano glass and rich jewel tones in hues of greens and deep reds. Hand-blown Italian glass chandeliers by Venini add a dramatic pink glow, along with ribbed glass sconces and antique mirrors lined with brass. A focal point of the space is a large-scale custom tapestry by artist Tamsen Hall, adding a playful twist on classic Roman paintings. Private dining is also available at Principessa with seating up to 16 at a custom 8-foot-long cherry wood dining table, and a private terrace for cocktails. In addition, a massive outdoor bar sits by a seaside garden setting and outdoor terrace seating, an ideal starting point before dinner or to kick off a stay at the resort. A complement to Principessa and its other concepts, The Boca Raton recently introduced The Flamingo Grill, which features a whimsical spin on the glamorous restaurants of midcentury America, while evoking a 1920s Havana resort. Custom-patterned floor tiles, local flora and fauna, and servers donned in pastel-pink tuxedo jackets complete an image of playfulness and ease. The menu, created in partnership with Mario Carbone and Executive Chef Will Cox, is a nod to the classic chophouse, with familiar dishes that

are tried and true, including a lamb chop with mint jelly, shrimp cocktail and prime rib with au jus, Dijon mustard and horseradish cream, all with the Major Food Group touch. Sadelle’s is a version of the age-old New York City-style deli that’s finding its place in the Florida sun. A riff off Major Food Group’s original Manhattan location, Sadelle’s at The Boca Raton is as inventive as ever, with housemade bagels accented with a range of toppings

(including sturgeon, sable and egg salad), specialty sandwiches, sliced-to-order salmon and crispy latkes. With indoor and outdoor seating—plus a grab-and-go component with pastries, parfaits and baked items like a Key lime tart—Sadelle’s has quickly become The Boca Raton’s must-visit brunch location. For evening cravings, an all-day dining menu offers up savory dinner selections such as delicious roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. In addition to Major Food Group-supported concepts, The Boca Raton presents dining options born out of a desire to create a culinary narrative that hearkens back to a golden era, yet with a feel that’s contemporary and luxurious. Enter ideas like the MB Supper Club. In a space that was once the original Members’ Club Room, walking into the swanky MB Supper Club is like stepping into a Gatsby-esque jewel box in a private club, covered with red wallpaper with a monkey theme, a cocktail lounge dressed in black, and an intimate dining area with tables set with some of the resort’s vintage 1950s gold-rimmed and monogrammed plateware. Stately silver serving carts, also from that bygone era, stand at attention for table-side

service, and the mood continues with monkey-themed wall sconces and lights, even a monkey logo embossed on the linen napkins—an homage to the eccentric founder of the hotel, Addison Mizner, who was famous for showing up everywhere with his pet monkey, Johnnie Brown, on his shoulder. The menu reflects the best of the best in classic American dining, dishes found in country clubs and ocean liners, Manhattan private clubs and Beacon Hill dinner parties. For example, the appetizer list includes oysters Rockefeller, crab Louie, shrimp scampi and French onion soup, longtime favorites with a fresh spin thanks to farm-to-table ingredients and a chef-driven execution. The main course follows this lead with a battery of can’t-wait-to-try dishes for every day of the week: beef Wellington, lobster Newburg, sole meunière and veal Oscar, to name a few. And for dessert? What else? Baked Alaska, alongside other classic winners. Guests of The Boca Raton Yacht Club can enjoy the exclusivity of Flybridge, a brand-new fine dining concept

that embodies coastal elegance. On the top floor of Yacht Club with sweeping views of Lake Boca Raton and the ocean beyond, Flybridge’s décor is inspired by the interior of a yacht with resin teak, blue hues and high-gloss white paint and chrome accents. A mahogany lattice wall creates an eye-catching entrance to the bar, where guests can choose from skillfully prepared classic cocktails, such as a martini and Negroni Spagliato, and other creations. Reminiscent of a Slim Aarons photo shoot (in fact, there are Slim Aarons books displayed all over the Yacht Club as well as images of 1950s-era boating parties), Flybridge is an adults-only location, welcoming diners ages 16 and up. Flybridge guests select from a seasonal prixfixe, four-course seafood or vegetarian tasting menu, beginning with canapés and an optional cheese course. Menus consist of small-plate courses, each more enticing than the last, and served by the chefs on Bernardaud china. Witness artistry up close as the culinary team prepares exquisite cuisine in an open-concept kitchen. The produce and products from local farms and fishermen allow Michelin Star Executive Chef Peter Annewanter and his team to source the high-quality ingredients of not only the season, but of that day. Just steps outside, fresh herbs are picked from the restaurant’s balcony garden. “Our comprehensive new culinary offerings, more than a dozen, are providing a diverse world of flavor for Club members and resort guests,” said Daniel Hostettler, President & CEO of The Boca Raton. “For Flybridge, we wanted to create an exclusive dinner experience for Yacht Club guests that would provide a romantic and memorable evening.” For upscale, coastal Mediterranean fare, there’s Marisol on the ocean terrace of Beach Club. Designed in collaboration with lifestyle guru Colin Cowie, this spot features a breezy, lighthearted, and sophisticated vibe (it is Colin Cowie, after all) with a flavorful Mediterranean menu and a formidable wine list. In keeping with its seascape views, there’s a raw bar component that includes cold-water oysters, jumbo prawns, stone crabs and shellfish towers. Legendary Greek spreads have their own category on the menu—like charred eggplant, hummus, roasted honey squash and whipped feta. The mezze plate allows diners to sample Greek dishes, including baked feta, Greek olives, hummus, house pickles, falafel and more.

The tagine category includes seafood paella and veal stifado (braised veal shank, root veggies, barley mint and Pangrattato). And just steps away, Beach Club lounge’s menu provides International indulgences with cocktails indoors and out. Other dining options include Palm Court, a lakefront cocktail lounge with soaring ceilings and breathtaking coastal views. Designed by Rockwell Group, Palm Court serves as a main social space with indoor and al fresco seating. Glazed arches framed in black steel enhance the views out to the lake and encourage the connection to the outdoors. A glamorous green-tiled bar is surrounded by

art installations from Sponder Gallery. The airy space features a menu with tasty bites, from truffle fries and cheese beignets to Caesar salad, colossal shrimp with Habanero cocktail sauce, and prosciutto pizzettas. And for dessert? A sweets menu beckons, with bright flavors such as tropical mango sorbet. It’s a great time to dine at the moveable feast of elevated cuisine at The Boca Raton. Where will your palate take you today? SWANK FARMS Swank Specialty Produce is a hydroponic and sustainable farm growing more than 350 varieties of lettuces, specialty greens, baby and full-size vegetables, microgreens and more. Founded by Jodi and Darren Swank, the 20-acre farm in Loxahatchee has been supplying fresh produce to The Boca Raton for more than 20 years, fueled in part by a mutual admiration between both parties for their collective

dedication to farm- to-table dining. “Swank Farm is proud to work with The Boca Raton for many years,” Jodi says, “and we truly appreciate the support as a small family farm.” To understand the brand is to appreciate its history. The Swanks started their farm in 2002 with three products: lettuce, arugula and basil. Instead of selling their produce directly to distributors, they flipped the model and sold directly to chefs and restaurants. In 2003, Jodi began taking samples to the back doors of local restaurants in Palm Beach Country. But she didn’t travel alone: The young mother had her two babies in car seats in the back seat. She says her children were her good-luck charms. “There was not one chef who did not allow me in with my samples and kids,” Jodi says. Two decades later, the Swanks have become the go-to farm for local chefs. They’ve even hosted the likes of Daniel Boulud, Emeril Lagasse and other several internationally known chefs, who’ve created memorable feasts at their farm. Recently, the Swanks opened a weekly Swank Farmers Market where 26 vendors showcase their products. For them, it goes beyond supporting local; it’s supporting a lifelong dream of feeding a community while nurturing the earth. For more information, visit swankspecialtyproduce.com

Rachel George + Ryan Bennett Wedding date: 2/27/21 PHOTOGRAPHY BY MAGGIE ALVAREZ

R

ACHEL GEORGE ADMITS that even

though she saw it coming, she still broke down in tears. The world travelers had been dating for two years, and George says that she suspected early on that boyfriend Ryan Bennett would propose to her on their upcoming trip to Paris. But when he got down on one knee and proposed to her in front of the Eiffel Tower, she couldn’t help but get emotional. “Paris is the city of romance, so I had a little inkling,” George says. “And then he went down on his knee, and I was so happy and excited that I don’t remember what he said. He is an amazing man and the best partner, and I was so excited to find that person and spend forever together.” George, a hair stylist and color specialist at Bond Street Salon in Delray Beach, and Bennett, a sales executive at a medical device company, started immediately planning their wedding. They were considering a different South Florida location, but with only a month left before their February 2021 wedding, they decided to look at The Boca Raton, and knew immediately it was the ideal location for their wedding.

The ceremony took place on the Grand Lawn, in front of the golf course, right as the sun was setting. With a purple-pink sky as the backdrop, George’s father Kirk officiated, a role he also played at George’s sister’s wedding. “My father knows us more than anyone and definitely has taught me a lot about what true love actually is,” she says. “I think every dad should marry off their daughter.” As George and Bennett said “I do” against a circular altar piece made of dried pampas grass, the crowd of 150 erupted. Boca By Design created a palette of jewel tone colors for what George calls a “moody” vibe. Deep greens, blues and reds filled the wedding, from the bridal bouquet to the linens to the lighting. As George says, “Boca By Design did an insane job. They took my idea of a moody vibe and ran with it.” The outdoor reception took place underneath glowing moonlight at Spa Palmera’s outdoor courtyard, where five different food areas, including sushi and carving stations, awaited guests. A dessert table with an array of treats complemented the wedding cake, designed with red velvet and buttercream frosting. “The Boca Raton did the whole wedding—from food to decor,” George says. “They captured exactly what I was envisioning and brought it to life. Even with so little time to plan our wedding, I was never really stressed about how it was going to look because the team at The Boca Raton is fabulous at their jobs.” The couple had planned to honeymoon in Tulum, Mexico, a few months after their wedding. But they never made it there. A surprise came soon after the wedding: George became pregnant! Baby girl Vivian was born later that year, and the new parents have been smitten since.

Scott Gerow Executive Director of Luxury Sales Cotilla Beresh Gerow Luxury Team With more than $360 million in luxury residential sales in 2021 alone, Marisela Cotilla, Rachelle Beresh and Scott Gerow, have come together as seasoned industry veterans to form the powerhouse partnership of The Cotilla Beresh Gerow Luxury Team. With a relationship-driven approach to business, The CBG Luxury Team’s principles and professionalism have helped them cultivate a strong sphere of clientele in the competitive Boca Raton market. “After years of working together with passion and dedication, it was important for us to come together at one table, under one roof,” said Marisela Cotilla. “We are an experienced group of equals, founded on the common commitment to service our clients seamlessly and at the highest level.” The CBG Luxury Team explains that the current landscape of buyers is not only hailing from traditional markets like New York and Chicago, but that South Florida is also seeing an influx of Californians making the decision to move East. Aside from the obvious motivation of lower taxes and year-round warm weather, the recent realities of the pandemic have brought the demand of the luxury Florida lifestyle to the forefront. Buyers are finally asking themselves, ‘Why wait?’ The Team noted that a million-dollar property previously represented the luxury market classification. Today, everything from single-family homes to new developments are trading well over a million dollars. As the demand continues to increase, so does the value.

Marisela Cotilla

“Our mantra is ‘Who you work with matters,’ said Cotilla. “We demonstrate this by providing an elevated level of service to our clients. Through extraordinary market knowledge, superior technology tools and a client-first approach, we see ourselves more as advisors than brokers.”

Featuring expansive private terraces – all with summer kitchens and many with plunge pools – they provide an elegant setting for relaxing and dining in the fresh air with family and friends.
