LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome I HOPE THAT YOU ARE enjoying an incredible start to the year. We are in the midst of an exciting winter season at The Boca Raton. A New Golden Era marks a meaningful evolution in the resort and club’s history, and I’m pleased to commemorate the occasion with this first edition of 1926 magazine. Our magazine title pays homage to the property’s original opening as The Ritz-Carlton Cloister Inn in 1926, before becoming an internationally recognized landmark. 2022 is a monumental year for The Boca Raton; we’ve begun to unveil a $200 million Phase One transformation. The reimagination is comprehensive, with new accommodations across five lodging options, dynamic culinary concepts and innovative programming. Highlights include more than a dozen new restaurants and bars—from casual bites to upscale dining such as MB Supper Club, Palm Court, and signature venues in partnership with Mario Carbone’s Major Food Group. We launched the first phase of Harborside Pool Club, an upscale four-acre water oasis; redesigned our 50,000-square-foot Spa Palmera; introduced luxury retail shops; and are making upgrades across the property, from our private beach and pools to our expansive golf course and Racquet Club. The physical changes are only the beginning. Extraordinary experiences at The Boca Raton mean much more, whether it’s discovering new family activities, learning a sport such as pickleball, booking a private wellness session at Spa Palmera, or attending our robust lineup of year-round events and holiday celebrations. Programming is designed to entertain, enrich and provide exclusive culinary and beverage events for all tastes. On the pages ahead, explore how we are creating moments that inspire. Generations of families have created lifelong memories at this resort and club, and we are honored to continue the legacy. And personally, as newcomers to the Boca Raton community, my family and I are thrilled to be immersed in the many wonders of this destination. We welcome you to The Boca Raton and The Boca Raton Club this season and beyond.

Protecting Our Planet The Boca Raton is continuing to take various steps to ensure limited impact on the environment while enhancing sustainability practices. Since 2011, the golf course has been a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, which helps golf courses protect local environments and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. In addition, throughout the property’s landscaping, reclaimed water is used for irrigation. The Boca Raton is also leading a dunes restoration project in partnership with Native Plantings, which specifically features the seagrape and dune sunf lower. Each fall, together with local partner Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, the resort supports sea turtle releases. After a presentation about nature conservation, participants are taken to the beach to release the hatchlings at the sands of the Beach

OME WILL CALL IT AN outdoor emporium of fun, others will describe it as an elevated opportunity to soak up the Florida sun. No matter the definition, the new Harborside Pool Club is a game-changer in the world of resorts. The numbers alone are impressive: Four acres, one 450-foot lazy river, two three-story-high water slides, one double surf wave simulator, four pools and a 7,100-squarefoot lawn for special events. Those figures are enough to awe the thrill-seeker and entice the relaxer. Overlooking Lake Boca Raton, Harborside Pool Club is next to the property’s entrance, offering guests and members a prelude to the expansive outdoor possibilities that greet them upon arrival. Architecture firm Garcia/Stromberg, landscape architects at EDSA and interior designers Rockwell Group worked together to create an upscale

There are several components that make golfing at The Boca Raton one of the top sporting experiences in the nation. On the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, the par-71, 18hole course offers golfers peaceful natural views and a championship-level course that features 12 acres of water, a signature island-green finishing hole and the exclusivity of playing among fellow members and guests.
For the property’s youngest guests and members, Harborside Pool Club’s kids’ club is home to a 2,300-square-foot indoor play space, plus an outdoor pirates-themed playground that’s complete with a splash pad and replica pirate ship. The kids’ club, Banyan Bunch, features high-level programming for kids of all ages. Partnering with itavi, an organization specialized in enriching children’s lives, Banyan Bunch offers a rotation of fun and educational activities that includes morning yoga, art, physical exercise and community building. Throughout the year, families can take advantage of the drop-off program (for 4- to 12-year-olds) or pursuits that the entire family can enjoy together. environment that can be enjoyed by adults, children and everyone in between. For those looking to lounge, a dedicated cabana area features adults-only amenities, as well as family offerings. In the adults-only area, there’s a bar and daybeds with bottle service; family areas offer games and kid-friendly activities. And for those looking for more action, Harborside Pool Club will introduce a FlowRider wave simulator this year, where riders can do their best Kelly Slater and Carissa Moore impersonations while seeking some thrilling water sport action. Harborside will also cater to the foodie, with dining options that include poolside service, as well as a bistro with a pizza and pasta menu. A lounge dedicated to tweens, Latitude 26, will feature a candy store, walk-up window with milkshakes and ice cream, and a bar with mocktails.

The Boca Raton has four on-property clay pickleball courts at the Racquet Club. With a clay surface, players enjoy the benefits of the game without the impact on the body’s joints, thanks to the shock absorption of the surface and ability to slide easier. During the winter season, players can sign up for round-robin tournaments, mixers, clinics and private lessons for pickleball enthusiasts.

Erica Kasel and Vanessa Carter Meet two dedicated experts—who are elevating The Boca Raton experience to new levels.
T
HE WAY ERICA K ASEL AND VANESSA CARTER see it, luxury comes standard at The Boca Raton. The property’s new Chief Marketing Officer, Kasel has worked behind the scenes to amp up the luxe quotient in every facet of the resort and Club. A 20-plus-year veteran in the luxury arena—with marketing leadership roles at Chanel and American Express’ Departures and Centurion magazines and as a global hotelier at Preferred Hotels & Resorts and Leading Hotels of the World—Kasel says The Boca Raton’s members and guests will soon experience an even more elevated level of luxury at The Boca Raton. Carter is also a longtime specialist, but in luxury spa services and management; both note that a complete transformation of the resort's brand experience is underway, from bespoke offerings to immersive retail collaborations and programming. Here, Kasel and Carter walk us through how they are taking The Boca Raton to the next level.
ERICA K ASEL What attracted you to The Boca Raton? “It’s an incredible opportunity to contribute my career experience in hospitality, publishing and retail to transforming The Boca Raton to one of the top luxury destinations in North America. As a 200-acre private club with five distinctive hotels, we are uniquely positioned on two waterfronts: our private golden beach and Lake Boca Raton, where we

recently opened the Harborside Pool Club. Under the leadership of Daniel Hostettler, our President and CEO, I am part of an incredible team of luxury leaders who are committed to making this property shine.” How will The Boca Raton continue separating itself from other luxury properties? “The most critical way to bring A New Golden Era to life is by creating extraordinary experiences for our members and guests, moments to remember in a lush, beautiful and thoughtful environment. We are putting the guest and member brand experience at the center of all that we do.“ How are you reimagining the member and guest experience? “We’re developing unique experiences in multiple areas. Our culinary program will include wine pairing dinners hosted by the winemakers, and we’re bringing in renowned chefs to create special meals and host cooking classes. There will also be inspiring guest speakers, concerts, book signings, a film series, plus fashion shows and pop-up fashion events and collaborations. We’re also going to expand our wellness program to give members and guests more opportunities to relax, reconnect and recharge, including full-moon yoga and candlelight yoga and expanded programs combining the pampering of Spa Palmera with nutrition and wellness counseling from our onsite partner biostation.
For those interested in personal enrichment, we’re bringing in guest lecturers in topics including business, culture, design and self-improvement. We also plan to have regular business networking receptions for our club members.” Tell us more about the new retail brands at The Boca Raton. “We have partnered with Everything But Water to bring an exclusive pop-up shopping experience at Cloister and at our new Harborside Pool Club. In the renovated Cloister, we will have Maison Rose, our chocolate and macaron shop, Mizner’s Provisions, a curated boutique with apparel, sundries and logo items; WatchBox this spring; and coveted fine jewelry brands as well. We recently opened a new golf and sports Pro Shop in our Clubhouse that features new brands like TravisMathew, Fred Perry, Katherine Way and modern Italian men’s classics from member-favorite Bugatchi.“ How would you describe the new shopping experience? “We plan to offer a sense of discovery every time you come in. We’re excited to showcase emerging brands and irresistible finds—whether you’re looking for a hostess gift, a treat for yourself or a gift to bring back home after your travels.”
VANESSA CARTER It’s always a good idea to spa. And there’s no better place to find your sanctuary than at The Boca Raton’s award-winning Spa Palmera. Originally conceived to mirror the grandeur of Spain’s Alhambra Palace, the spa features 44 treatment rooms, a lush courtyard with tranquil gardens, waterfall whirlpools and a private pool, all of which provide pure relaxation and a moment to detox and recenter. This winter, Spa Palmera welcomes a new slate of spa services, a wellness café menu, and a redesign of its spaces, curated by Colin Cowie. Spa Director Vanessa Carter discusses the spa’s evolution into a modern-day oasis. What inf luenced the revamping of the spa and its previous spa menu? “There’s a lot of anxiety and overall heaviness in today’s climate. We’re finding people need a little boost in order to have the energy that’s needed, and it gives us great pleasure to offer that opportunity for our guests. The new spa menu enhances our previous offerings and includes more high-quality services.” What new treatments are you excited about? “We are proud of all our offerings. We feature Natura Bisse and Biologique Recherche, which we consider among the top skin care brands. We saw a high demand for our 90-minute Biologique Recherche facial, which helps combat premature aging, so we decided to add a 60-minute version to give clients more options. In addition, we’re adding a 90-minute herbal compress massage featuring aromatic coconut aromas that are inspired by our tropical settings, a sound therapy session that allows one’s mind to disconnect, and drift into a harmonious and meditative state
through the vibrational rhythms of singing bowls. We also have a new sensory awakening therapy massage designed to renew and recharge your mind and body through customizable pressure and contrast therapy of warm basalt and cold marble stones.” The spa is known for its architecturally ornate ritual baths. What makes them a must-experience service? “There are a wealth of benefits with the ritual baths that speak to the core of the spa. The whole design of the spa was inspired by the Alhambra Palace, which has several iconic water features. So, we thought, why not have a water feature that stands out and is a signature calling card of the spa? The ritual bath service is a whole elevated detoxification process. We have a salt room with halo crystals that is beneficial for lung health, pink Himalayan salt stones in the sauna, and a steam room that promotes skin health. After you detox, we then add back nutrients into the body with a self-applied scrub that helps with regeneration and hydration. Your senses are enticed with cold compresses and ice cold sorbets, so there’s a contrast in therapies. There’s also the warm plunge pool with jets that massage your lower limbs, providing the benefits of a hydro-massage. This is such an important treatment for your mind, as well as your body. Here, you are in one place and have elements that will keep you present and grounded." How does the new café menu complement Spa Palmera’s ethos? Our all-encompassing setting results in a positive sensory experience, and part of that is a café menu with fare that underlines a wellness theme. The new menu continues to feature Spanishstyle tapas and light bites, plus a larger beverage selection.

HEY SAY THAT HISTORY TENDS to repeat itself. And if that’s the case with The Boca Raton, then an emulation of the property’s glorious past is exactly what the new owners want for its next iteration—save for the notable addition of a few modern twists. In its nearly 100-year history, The Boca Raton has never been one to whisper. Imagined by visionaries with dreams of ultimate luxury and fanciful indulgences across 200 acres, The Boca Raton has emerged as more than simply a destination; it’s become an icon. Today, under new owners MSD Partners, The Boca Raton enters what it’s coining as A New Golden Era, hearken-
ing back to the mid-century’s glamorous decades for travel that saw the property become a bucketlist destination. “We have to absolutely honor the legacy of what’s been here for 95 years,” says Daniel Hostettler, a career hospitality executive whom MSD appointed as The Boca Raton’s president and CEO upon its takeover. “My favorite conversation was with a member who started a sales company. He would host an annual sales retreat for his team at a mid-priced hotel. And when the company began making substantial money, the team would travel from the mountains of North Carolina to Florida to have a sales conference, and they stayed at The Boca Raton. He said it was the height of elegance

and the height of sophistication, and it was the place in America you wanted to go and see. That’s the feeling I want our property to return to.” To appreciate where The Boca Raton will be heading with its New Golden Era, one must understand the ambition behind the club and hotel throughout the 95-year history. In the early 1920s, Palm Beach society’s go-to architect, Addison Mizner, and his influential colleagues had dreams of making the newly incorporated Boca Raton “the Dream City of the Western World,” as it was advertised nationwide.
“What Mizner wanted was an ambitious resort community,” says Susan Gillis, chief curator at the Boca Raton Historical Society. “As advertised, it would have been ‘The Greatest Resort in the World.’” Part of that included building a 1,000-room hotel on the beach of Boca Raton, a behemoth in any context, but especially at the time for the area, then a farm town with a few hundred residents. Mizner used his background in Spanish-style architecture and years living overseas in Central America and Spain to champion a Mediterranean Revival style of design for the property, which included tile roofs, stucco exteriors, ornate archways, and large windows and doors that accessed the outdoors. In addition, as Boca Raton’s city planner, Mizner wanted to create a main street (now Camino Real), and dredge the area’s lakes and canals, as well as build a polo field, tennis courts and three golf courses. The Ritz-Carlton Investment Corporation soon became investors of Mizner’s oceanfront hotel, taking over majority control of building

the 1,000-room hotel, leaving Mizner with the freedom to create another impressive nearby hotel just west of Lake Boca Raton. His 100-room RitzCarlton Cloister Inn opened on February 6, 1926 and would be the beginnings of what is now The Boca Raton. When the doors opened that winter, nearly 350 members of Palm Beach society attended a dinner, as Dr. Donald Curl and the Boca Raton Historical Society wrote in their book The Boca Raton Resort & Club, Mizner’s Inn. According to Curl, the names in that evening’s leather guest book rivaled “the social registers of two continents,” and the dinner was considered “one of the outstanding social events of the season.” Over the years, new owners added to the property, with Clarence Geist renaming the property the Boca Raton Club and J.Myer Schine allegedly painting the hotel’s stucco exterior in a pink hue. The property welcomed several dignitaries and celebrities during the original golden era of travel, including the Duke of Windsor, and counted the legendary Sam Snead as its on-property golf pro during the midcentury. When MSD Partners purchased the property in 2019, the intent to replicate that stunning level of luxury and experiences was forefront in their plans, says Hostettler. “We wanted to return to the elegance that this property is known for,” he says. “When you speak to older people who traveled, this place was on everybody’s bucket list in the 1950s, very chic and very elegant. It all goes back to that Golden Era of Travel from the ’40s to the ’60s with Pan Am and dressing up when you went on an airplane—and this property was synonymous with luxury, aspirational travel destinations. We want to return it to that level of industry respect and among travelers.” Part of that goal is introducing bespoke enhancements to every guest and member experience, from exceptional accommodations to dynamic culinary concepts and innovative programming. Pool Club, a four-acre lakefront oasis. When it is complete in 2022, it will feature luxury cabanas, three pools, a 450-foot lazy river, two three-story-high waterslides, a retail boutique, 7,100-square-foot lawn for events, 5,000-squarefoot Banyan Bunch kids’ club, a teens’ lounge and new waterfront dining options. In addition, the culinary options are being enhanced and expanded, including an innovative partnership with Major Food Group, the company behind some of the nation’s most popular restaurants—including Carbone— and the recipient of 19 total stars from the New York Times and three stars from the Michelin Guide, as well as numerous distinctions from the James Beard Foundation. With new ideas and partnerships come new designs and structures, a task that the architecture firm Garcia Stromberg was ready to take on. Thrice the architects tapped to renovate the property since the firm was founded in 1987, Garcia Stromberg is approaching its latest version—this time with MSD as partners—like the crown jewel in the firm’s portfolio. Jorge Garcia, principal and CEO of Garcia Stromberg, has a personal stake in the project. A Boca Raton resident since 1987, Garcia says he, partner Peter Stromberg and The Boca
Raton executives wanted the city and its residents to feel proud of this renovated property. “MSD Partners was evaluating the property with the right mindset,” he says. “They saw The Boca Raton for its true value—as an icon.” Before Garcia, Stromberg and the firm began the drafting process, they went back to basics by immersing themselves in the history of the property. They visited the Boca Raton Historical Society and spoke extensively with Gillis and Mary Csar, the organization’s executive director, and sifted through archival photos and artifacts starting from the 1920s. Garcia says he walked away with a deeper understanding that even though the creation of the resort and property was an evolution and compilation of great architects over the decades, it began with mammoth-sized aspirations from Mizner. Garcia says Mizner’s glamorous 100-room Cloister Inn set the tone to uphold an impressive destination, leading to its eventual growth into a 200-acre property over several decades. He concluded that the firm needed to focus on two concepts: the beginning of the Golden Era and then the growth of it, in-
cluding the buildings that were added on through the years. “It grows sort of organically, and we are just the next players in line to [follow] this organic growth,” Garcia says of his architectural firm. “It’s our job to bring all these perspectives from the past 95 years together, and elevate it to create A New Golden Era.” With historic renovations, Garcia says he and his team kept asking themselves one question: What would Mizner do today? Garcia points to the revamped porte cochère, which builds upon the existing structure, as an example. Originally constructed to accommodate classic vehicles and carriages, the porte cochère didn’t exactly work with today’s automobiles, including emergency vehicles and buses. The architecture firm decided to add a wide extension to the original porte cochère that was still welcoming and inviting. Today, a blue steel canopy-like structure stands adjacent to the original entryway, without impeding or altering the prior architecture, while serving as a porte cochère for larger and longer vehicles. Also, Cloister’s exterior has been returned to a coastal white, which was its original color. “We’re here to create our own stamp on the process, but it doesn’t mean that we turn our back to the beauty and the icon,” Garcia says. “We cannot abandon the history. We need to appreciate what is there as we move forward in A New Golden Era.”

LITTLE-KNOWN FACT ABOUT chef-entrepreneur Mario Carbone is that he’s a history buff. “Give me a good research project, and I’ll sink my teeth into it,” says the managing partner of Major Food Group and Food & Wine magazine’s former Best New Chef in America. His statement comes as no surprise to those who have followed his career trajectory, which includes partnering in 2010 with restaurant visionaries Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick to form Major Food Group, a culinary empire that is redefining the dining experience around the globe. The trio’s concepts include the original location of chef Carbone’s namesake restaurant in New York City, a restaurant that had origins steeped in historical preservation. Before the restaurant opened in 2013, the partners were seen researching every aspect of their craft by dining throughout the city’s five boroughs, compiling a list of memorable traits that make up old-school Italian restaurants—like a customer being presented with a raw T-bone for inspection before it’s grilled, and a server who can rattle off a myriad of daily specials without breaking cadence. For Major Food Group, Carbone restaurant wasn’t about resuscitating a vanishing art; it was about honoring its ambience and distinctive style of participatory service. Whatever the team is doing, it must be working: The restaurant has received one Michelin star each year since 2014. The trifecta is carrying its tradition of research and respect with its new partnership with The Boca Raton. What started as

a conversation with property owners MSD Partners about consulting for The Boca Raton has evolved into Major Food Group curating four signature venues found on property. “We found that we loved working with everyone,” Carbone says. They include The Flamingo Grill, which offers a fresh, glamorous take on the midcentury American chophouse; Sadelle's, the inventive, perennially packed brunch institution with locations in New York's SoHo and Las Vegas; Japanese Bocce Club, a sophisticated Japanese restaurant with an omakase bar; and Principessa Ristorante, an elegant restaurant featuring dishes from northern Italy. “We were drawn to The Boca Raton for several reasons,” Carbone says. “Aside from the support of the owners, the property’s historical restorations and hearkening back to a Golden Era is something we can dig into. There’s so much significance to this property. Plus, I enjoy

talking to members and guests, and trying to figure out what’s best suited for the next generation of this project.” If Major Food Group is known for one thing, it’s elevating restaurant standards—in every single facet. Fashion wunderkind Zac Posen designed the wait staff ’s tuxedos at each of the group’s four Carbone locations from Hong Kong to Miami Beach, and Vito Schnabel, son of art legend Julian Schnabel, often curates the artwork found in the restaurants. “Major Food Group, with its reputation for the highest level of culinary excellence and ability to make every guest feel like a VIP, is the perfect partner for us,” says Daniel Hostettler, president and CEO of The Boca Raton. “Together, we will
set entirely new standards, and I'm confident the results will be nothing less than extraordinary.” The first of The Boca Raton’s onsite restaurants curated by Major Food is The Flamingo Grill, opened this summer. Designed by Rockwell Group—whose portfolio includes Nobu Downtown in New York, Bleau Bar inside the Fountainbleu in Miami and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas—The Flamingo Grill’s décor is inspired by Florida’s local flora and fauna. The interior features layers of floral patterns, 3D green glazed tile and a custom, hand-painted Portuguese tile mural of the grill’s namesake flamingo. The dining room opens out onto a covered veranda for al fresco dining in cozy seating areas overlooking the resort’s 18-hole golf course.

The thoughtfully curated menu, created by Carbone and The Boca Raton’s Executive Chef Will Cox, features starters like lobster with French curry aioli and pickled green apple, a Caesar salad with ricotta salata and garlic croutons, a chilled heirloom tomato gazpacho with watermelon, and Montauk pearl oysters with a black pepper mignonette. “At The Flamingo Grill, we seek to thrill with the best versions of dishes that feel familiar to guests, prepared meticulously,” Carbone says. “Each night, the lights dim as our charismatic service captains offer an unparalleled culinary experience that’s at once intimate and energetic—the signature style of Major Food Group.” The Flamingo Grill bar and lounge is an intimate and seductive space anchored by a glowing back bar inspired by antique millwork and a bright, custom floral carpet. An eye-catching chandelier provides a subtle nod to the flamingo form with a spray of pink glass feathers above. Cocktail options include the Hemingway Daiquiri with rum, lime and grapefruit, as well as a selection of martinis and an extensive wine list. There’s also an outdoor terrace that features a bar and a menu of lighter bites. “The debut of The Flamingo Grill is a momentous first milestone on this journey,”

Hostettler says. “The Flamingo Grill provides resort guests and members with a one-of-a-kind experience, setting the standard for what is to come.” What’s to come is a global dining experience that takes place on one property. The world of flavors includes Palm Court, a cocktail lounge with a light bar menu that features European cuisine; Marisol, a Greek-inspired restaurant with ocean views at Beach Club; the Beach Club Lounge, which serves tapas from around the world, including dim sum, sushi, sliders and other sharable bites; Flybridge, a highly focused seafood menu at Yacht Club; and Mulligan’s at Harborside Golf Course, which has a revamped menu with casual offerings of classic fare. Hostettler is the driver of much of the property’s new culinary offerings. As he puts it, “Each of our restaurants fits a niche, and we’re curating for all types of guests and members.” That includes the new Maison Rose, a macaron-and chocolate-focused bakery with seasonal and imaginative flavors. Hostettler says it’s The Boca Raton’s version of a high-end candy store or chocolate shop, led by Executive Pastry

Chef Sebastien Feneyrol, whose background includes working at the famous Ladurée Paris under famed pastry chef Philippe Andrieu. The elegant confectionary store is near the lobby in Cloister, in an ideal location for members and guests who need a hostess gift on their way out the door. To add to the luster, Hostettler says revolving flavors of macarons will be displayed in the lobby, similar to a jewelry display, complete with a pin-spotting presentation. The property is also home to a new supper club, where members can enjoy live entertainment and a multi-course meal. Hostettler describes MB Supper Club as a “reincarnation of the members’ clubroom that features different themed entertainment—be it a piano night, American standards, Latin music or big band classics—each night.” The cuisine itself is a contemporary interpretation of classic American dishes, such as steak Diane, baked Alaska and shrimp scampi. Using dishes dating from the 1950s that the team found in the property’s cabinets, the room has a very “Mad Men” feel to it, Hostettler says. Designed alongside Colin Cowie, the space is an homage to the Monkey Bar, the beloved former speakeasy on the property. Wallpaper with monkeys lines the room’s perimeter, and deep dark green lacquered columns and a gold ceiling completes the bygone-era vibe. “Our new food and beverage options are an extremely exciting moment not just for The Boca Raton, but for the entire region,” Hostettler says. “We’re proud to lead the change and offer an array of thoughtful, elevated dining experiences in our area.”

COASTAL This Colin Cowie-designed beachside ceremony transported the wedding party to Sardinia—at The Boca Raton

T DIDN’T HIT MARK CURCIO until he started walking down the aisle. Walking arm in arm with his two daughters, Heather and Ashley, Curcio says when he arrived at his beachside wedding ceremony to Patty Balen, he began to cry. “When I arrived, I realized that everyone at the ceremony were all my friends and family,” he says. “They came here to see me marry Patty, who they know is my absolute soulmate. And it just hit me what a really special moment this was when I reached the sand to see everyone.” A businessman from New Jersey, Curcio says it was an easy decision to have a wedding at The Boca Raton. With its picture-perfect coastal background, elevated food and beverage offerings, and having celebrity event planner and lifestylist Colin Cowie serve as the wedding planner in collaboration with the hotel’s onsite catering team, The Boca Raton Beach Club became the couple’s ideal venue. Balen had long envisioned an outdoor wedding by the beach, even if it took place during Florida’s summer. “The moment I saw Marisol, I thought this place was so beautiful,” says Balen of the dining venue that was designed in partnership with Cowie. “We always wanted to go to Sardinia to get married there, but then COVID came. So when I saw Marisol with its location next to the blue water, with the sun hitting it perfectly, I thought this could be our little Sardinia.” The 115 guests experienced a Cowie-designed wedding, complete with what Curcio calls the celebrity wedding designer’s “passion for detail.” “The way Colin set everything up, it felt like we were no longer in Boca Raton,” Balen says. Earth-tone colors were present throughout the night’s various onsite venues, including dried pampas grass and roses in mauve—brought to life by event creators

Boca by Design. Despite being transported to Sardinia, the wedding included typical Florida summertime moments, including a sprinkling of rain after the ceremony. Still, the light shower couldn’t put a damper on the celebration. The evening’s food and beverage delights were created by the property’s culinary team. The cocktail reception included a raw bar with langoustines, jumbo prawns, East Coast cold water oysters and West Coast Kumamoto oysters on two monogrammed stations in ice. There was even a caviar canape that featured 24-karat gold potato croquette. The plated dinner included a choice of grilled prime Creekstone bistecca or roasted yellowtail snapper. Dessert featured the multi-tiered wedding cake, as well as a rose sorbet and chocolate melting sphere with yuzu Mandarin cremeux. Before the couple departed for their honeymoon to the Turks and Caicos, Curcio says he wanted his new bride and guests to realize the fundamental reason that this wedding was taking place. During his vows, Curcio, a widower who admits he wasn’t sure he’d find love again, remembers saying to Balen, “Everyone in this room is filled with love, thanks to you. I love that you’re part of my life. I hope we get this long journey together. I feel like I was given a second life, and I have you to thank.”

WEDDING PLANNING WITH COLIN COWIE Luxury event planner and designer Colin Cowie—who’s created events for Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah Winfrey and Kim Kardashian—shares the touches that can make moments even more special. Every wedding is different, but what’s a common thread in your events? “Our team does our best to bring weddings alive. That’s the difficult part: Giving an event a soul. It’s when you give surprise elements, where we can make you feel really special and like the only person in the room, that truly makes a wedding stand out. There’s an emotional seduction that we need to tap into.” How can you make that happen? “We are emotionally connected to our couple. I start with learning about the couple—your favorite colors, what concepts you respond to, things like that—and then I give them images of what they want through mood boards. I also learn about the DNA of the venue to see what’s most organic to the process and what’s possible.” Why go to such lengths? “Everything I do is categorically about you. What resonates with you about these elements that you can touch, taste, smell, see and hear? And there may be several dozen items that resonate, but what are the ones that stick with you? It comes down to editing. I’m a great believer that great style comes from ruthless editing.” You’re known for your luxurious events, but how do you personally define “luxury?” “Luxury is how I make you feel. I’ve planned countless weddings, and none of them are ever the same. For us to deliver, it has to be the very best—and it has to be for you.”

espite a less than perfect childhood, Elizabeth (Beth) Bennett grew up learning how NOT to manage money and changed her path to protect her future. After graduating from Penn State University with a BS in accounting and earning an MBA from Meredith College, she worked in many wealth management positions and later continued the legacy of Chesapeake Financial Planning & Tax Services where she made it her calling to help clients navigate their finances with sensitivity, understanding and professional advice. “Interestingly, only 15% of financial advisors are women. I think we as women are very good at listening, then executing and implementing a plan. But we listen differently. Sometimes it’s a hand holding process and sometimes, it’s more like, let’s jump right in and let’s get this done. It really depends on what my client needs at that point in time,” she says. Beth is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and a Certified Financial Fiduciary. She and her mostly women firm provide a full scope of financial services from wealth management and preservation, insurance, taxes and family wealth transition. What truly hits home for her is when a client who has suddenly lost a spouse, gotten divorced or disabled and their financial world is turned upside down, without a clue as to how to handle finances. “I want to make sure my clients’ children don’t need to take care of their parents. Not only does that involve financial planning, it’s long-term health care planning, working with an estate planning attorney and a CPA as your “financial team” to be able to have everything coordinated for them. If I can help another woman feel secure, whether due to a life changing event, or after they’ve worked all of their life and they have amassed a certain amount of wealth so they can retire comfortably, those are the things that make my heart sing. There’s nothing like sitting across from a client and saying, you’re going to be okay, and here are the numbers in black and white,” she says.
