LETTER FROM THE TOP

WELCOME

WELCOME TO the Boca Raton Resort & Club! Our celebrated Resort was founded by architect Addison Mizner, the visionary behind the modern resort experience. Boca Raton Resort & Club abides by Mizner’s vision to this day: We are devoted to imbuing the member and guest experience with a sense of personal engagement that goes deeper than the typical weekend or vacation getaway. Our goal is to give you a truly transformational luxury experience—to help you create resonant, lasting memories. Our Resort offers plentiful opportunities for personal development, curated adventure and pure enjoyment. Examples include the Beach Club’s elevated “Sea Level” program, world-class dining at 13 restaurants, landmark golf courses and the Waldorf Astoria Spa, voted No. 1 Spa in the World by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards. At The Yacht Club, our luxurious waterfront hotel, guests enjoy magnificent views from private balconies and receive special attention from personal concierges. The Resort is further characterized by its graceful architecture,

verdant beauty and unique access to both a pristine ocean coastline and the Intracoastal Waterway. Fishing boats, charter watercraft and the 165-foot yacht Moonraker are docked just yards from our many guest rooms. We take pride in continuous improvement of our grounds and facilities; in addition to a newly renovated health club, we recently completed a $3 million renovation of our golf courses, updating the greens and fairways. To encourage our guests to return time and time again, we are continually introducing interesting new programming. Our popular Artist-in-Residence series offers members and guests in-depth experiences featuring luminaries in the worlds of music, dance, haute cuisine, fine wine and the visual arts. Our monthly calendar offers something for all ages and interests—we have featured everything from Maserati driving experiences to beach yoga to bocce tournaments and much, much more. We hope you will immerse yourself in the special kind of luxury our Resort is known for—luxury based on exemplary service, unique experiences and the promise of personal fulfillment. We are delighted to be your destination of choice, and thank you for your time with us. Sincerely,

John Tolbert

THE QUEST CONTINUES

THE RESORT has always quietly given back to the community, but it recently made a 6-year-old’s wish come true. Born with a congenital heart defect, little Anna Kuhn had always said she wanted to be a mermaid television news reporter. Five heart surgeries later, she and her parents qualified for a Make-A-Wish trip that brought them from York, Pennsylvania to the Resort. When the family checked into the Resort, the room was festooned with mermaids. The family took Anna for a walk on the beach while she collected shells in a basket—and that’s when she spotted two mermaids perched on the rocks on a jetty and immediately struck up a conversation. Everything went swimmingly, and later, at the pool, they even outfitted her with a mermaid tail for good measure.

MAKING WISHES COME TRUE

MIZNER’S QUEST—the self-guided family Resort tour—has gone digital. After purchasing a new Resort Passport, guests will receive the password to accept the Mizner’s Quest challenge with more than 40 clues to points of interest, including history, architecture, nature, wildlife, recreation areas, restaurants, lounges and lots more. This 2018-style scavenger hunt can be sorted by “category”—family, kids or adult-only. Users can view other Quest participants in real time and compare success rates, and there’s even a GPS map function to assist guests lost in Resort Land. One thing that’s stayed the same: The Quest still includes a trip to Serendipity for a scoop of complimentary ice cream.

BOCA RATON RESORT & CLUB: HISTORICAL TIMELINE 1926: On Feb. 6, 1926, the Cloister Inn, modeled after a Spanish castle by architect Addison Mizner, opens as the most expensive 100-room hotel of its day at $1.25 million. 1928: The Inn is purchased by Philadelphia utility magnate Clarence Geist and expands to include more guest rooms, the former Cabana Club and a new golf course. 1930: The Cloister Inn reopens after $8 million in renovations as the Boca Raton Club. They call the property “the most elegant barracks in history.” 40

VISITING CHEF PROGRAM CATCHING BIG AIR THE SALT Life goes airborne at the Resort these days with the new Flyboard Experience, where guests are hydro-powered by a hose connected to a Jet Ski, which lifts them up and allows them to fly through the air. Really. It’s the next generation of personal water sports, and it’s available through Costa del Este Watersports at the Resort. Check out the weekly flyboard shows to see how it’s done—every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m. at the Tower Pool Marina.

THE RESORT’S emphasis on providing members and guests with everchanging experiences is showcased in its visiting chefs program. This year, one of its culinary rock stars is Kerry Heffernan (at right) of Grand Banks restaurant in New York. Heffernan, who was a runner-up in the fourth season of “Top Chef Masters,” will incorporate his sustainable seafood practices into a curated dinner menu at the Resort. Heffernan graduated second in his class from the Culinary Institute of America and honed his skills at highly regarded restaurants such as Montrachet, Le Régence, Bouley and Mondrian with Tom Colicchio before landing his first job as chef de cuisine at One Fifth Avenue. Heffernan later became the executive chef of the Westbury Hotel’s famed Polo restaurant, the training ground for such extraordinary talents as Thomas Keller and Daniel Boulud. Soon afterward Kerry opened Union Square Hospitality Group’s Eleven Madison Park as its executive chef, and eventually became partner. Under his leadership, the restaurant received numerous accolades, including a tie with Per Se on Zagat Survey’s “Top 20 Most Popular Restaurants in New York,” The James Beard Foundation’s award for Outstanding Service in America, and Esquire’s “Best New Restaurant.” Heffernan is currently the chef at Grand Banks, a seasonal oyster bar and galley on the deck of a historic cod fishing schooner moored at Pier 25 New York.

GOOD VIBES VACATIONS THESE days are all about new experiences, getting away from it all, luxuriating in downtime— and now, maybe luxuriating in a little downward dog time! The Resort’s KarmaVibes events, held on selected weekends, are yoga sessions on the croquet lawn that celebrate mindfulness, balance and rhythm, with all proceeds benefiting 42

GOLF REIMAGINED FOR CLOSE to a century, golfers from around the world have come to play the revered course at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, which was once played by some of the game’s greatest legends, like Tommy Armour and Sam Snead, and recently underwent a massive renovation. Resort guests and club members may choose from the Resort Course and the Country Club Course, plus two golf schools. Dave Pelz is golf’s go-to instructor for all things short game, offering one-day clinics, two- and three-day golf schools and private group lessons. The Kellie Stenzel Golf Academy (see page 68) also offers private lessons, clinics and the option of a full-day school with on-course instruction. In short, there’s something for all ages and levels of experience at Stenzel’s academy. Call 561/447-3419 to make a reservation.

RETAIL THERAPY WITH A LITTLE SPARKLE THERE’S A new girl at the Resort— Michelle Farmer—of the Michelle Farmer Collaborate, a boutique off the lobby described as an “expertly curated platform” of her own brand and other emerging brands of clothing and jewelry. We’d call it fashion-forward but easy— luxury with a coastal vibe—and perfectly situated for your shopping convenience (Think of a new Michele Farmer dress as an appetizer on your way to dinner.) Also in the Cloister lobby is Altier Jewelers, and the whimsical Egg & Friends children’s wear shop, stuffed with exquisite luxury children’s clothing—and more cuteness than should be legal. v

DINING

THE RESORT’S impressive collection of chef-driven restaurants would be enough to dazzle any guest. But rock-star chefs are just part of the story; the Resort has been on the vanguard of the fresh, sustainable food movement for years, even before it became a thing in the culinary world. Overseeing it all is Andrew Roenbeck, who started out as an executive sous chef, then the Resort’s executive chef, just as the country’s culinary landscape evolved. Today at the Boca Resort, each restaurant has its own identity

and ability to satisfy specific guest cravings: Mediterranean-inspired Tuscan at Lucca; “sea to table” at the SeaGrille; sophisticated New American at the blue; California cool at Shaka. The list goes on. The emphasis? Each restaurant should be outstanding. Roenbeck attributes the changes in Resort restaurants to a well-traveled clientele. “(They) understand what good quality food is and what poor quality food is,” he says. “There’s nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.” Roenbeck says food is going in a “great positive direction. I think we’re going to continue to see an expansion of great grains—farro, spelt, lentils. And understanding that food and the robustness of flavor is going to come from vinegars, acids

and spice. That bold spice is going to come through lots of different avenues. There’s a spice out there that we use more and more called togarashi—it’s an Asian spice that a couple of years ago people wouldn’t know what the heck it was. But to sprinkle that … to get into a much more dynamic, multilevel spice like the togarashi—that sense really is umami, and that’s where we’re looking to bring food.” The Resort has long had its own

garden, and it even brings in its own honeybees. But with its own half-mile of private beach, it is particularly suited for connecting seafood to guests. Especially with such spectacular restaurants like the blue, Morimoto and the SeaGrille—restaurants that depend on achingly fresh seafood with little manipulation from the chef. So Roenbeck did what he always does: He figured out a way to make it so. To be fair, it was an idea that came from Roenbeck’s own chefs—chefs who are avid fishermen and who routinely angled on their days off, casting lines off friends’ boats. With a little bit of connecting, Roenbeck soon hooked up with four local fishmongers who started continued on page 58

[ SEAGRIL LE ] Donna Wynter ➤ As befitting a restaurant that draws its inspiration from cuisines all over the world, SeaGrille chef Donna Wynter is herself quite the culinary world traveler. The Jamaican native graduated from the French Culinary Institute in New York City, then went to cook in Bangkok, Paris and Beijing before disembarking in Miami and immersing herself in its thriving LatinCaribbean restaurant scene, cooking at such highly regarded local eateries as Palme d’Or and Baleen, as well as her own Donna’s Bistro. Words to Cook By: “At SeaGrille the cooking is all about simple and easy—not contrived— well-seasoned and bold flavors. We don’t do heavy sauces; we try to be very light and fresh, using local ingredients as much as possible.”

[ T H E BLUE ] Christie Tenaud ➤ Although her restaurant career began at age 18 as a hostess at an Orlando pizzeria, it didn’t take long for Christie Tenaud to realize her real passion was for the crazy, exhilarating bustle of a professional kitchen. In time, she caught the eye of James Beard award-winning chef Melissa Kelly, who promoted her up the ladder to chef de cuisine of Kelly’s Arizona eatery, Primo. After a stint at New York’s Essex House, Christie arrived at the Resort in November 2013. Christie Tenaud’s vision of her New American restaurant on the 27th floor of the Resort is limited only by her imagination. “That’s what I like most about my role within this restaurant: We can do whatever we want,” Tenaud says. That comes out in homemade pasta dyed pink with beet juice or scallops crudo, reinvented shrimp étouffée influenced by her love of Louisiana, Asian-inspired mussels or oysters cooked five different ways. Words to Cook By: “My philosophy is that of elegant simplicity. The blue is a New American restaurant, and I borrow flavors from different styles of food, whether they be Southern, Miami Cuban or New England.” 54

Words to Cook By: “I cook from the heart. I spend time in the dining room finding out what the guests like and don’t like. The guests are the most important people, our toughest critics. They are the people we cook for. I always try to find the freshest ingredients and let them stand on their own. It’s not about finding the most expensive ingredients.”

Since he started at Lucca four years ago, he’s watched the restaurant grow—from the number of patrons to the quality of the food. Lately, that means making organic whole-wheat pizza dough and fresh, homemade pasta daily. “We try to keep things simple, let the ingredients speak for themselves, make sure we’re sourcing good quality ingredients,” Pile says. Words to Cook By: “We always try to be as seasonal as possible, that’s kind of our main goal—to make sure we’re appropriate for the seasons. We’re changing; we’re always evolving.”

[ MORIMOTO ] Takao Soejima ➤ Cooking for Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto demands exceptional skill and dedication. Luckily, chef Takao Soejima has plenty of both; no wonder he’s been in command of the stylish restaurant since it opened. His culinary education began as a child at his mother’s side, preparing rice and miso soup. He then went to work in sushi restaurants on the East and West Coasts before taking a position at Morimoto in Philadelphia, where he rose to be head sushi chef. His signature dish is the classic miso soup, which Soejima says “was the first thing I learned to make in my cooking class in fourth grade. It is very easy to make, but it’s really hard to make it well.” Words to Cook By: “We don’t take any shortcuts to make good food. It takes time and skill and lots of love, but the result is so obvious that it separates us from that ordinary

DINING continued from page 53 texting him with the day’s catch. Thus began the negotiations. “The same fish was going past me, then going to the market at Palm Beach and then coming back to me four to five days later, all because cash is king. So we eliminated that, and now we’re the first stop,” Roenbeck says. “The other thing the fishmongers were worried about was that we’d take too much fish,” Roenbeck adds. “Our volume is always high. So they told us we can’t buy every single fish from them. They said they were afraid of putting all

their eggs in our basket. So they try and balance that with me as well.” The fishmongers regularly catch tuna, swordfish, grouper, snapper, yellowfin, mutton snapper, wahoo, cobia and barrelfish. Some days Chef Roenbeck gets a text saying they have 150 pounds of mutton snapper, and he responds, “I’ll take it all.” Roenbeck’s excitement translates to each Resort chef who gets to use the fresh fish in his or her dishes. “As a chef, you can feel the quality difference the minute you start to fabricate the dish,” he says. “It’s a textural difference, and there’s definitely a color. The fish is almost translucent. The fish coming four to five days later is going to start to become a little cloudy. The sweet flavor of a fresh fish is indescribable.” v

THE INFLUENCERS THE BOCA Resort is more than beachfront and architecture, luxury and fine dining. It is a destination defined by the quality of the experience it offers, with a curated array of diversions and amenities, and a network of achievers who share that vision. Here are a few of the people who bring that vision to life. 66

THE WORDS “Whispering Angel” have become synonymous with the mad appetite for rosé, and the man to credit for that—as well as the renewed mainstream interest in the pink varietal—is winemaker Sacha Lichine of Chateau d’Esclans in Provence. He also produces Rock Angel, Les Clans and Garrus rosés, but Whispering Angel has become so popular that it’s considered as essential as water in upscale locales like the Hamptons and Nantucket. It’s also on offer at the Resort’s various bars and restaurants. Lichine, who lived in Boca Raton with his family part-time until recently, says that forming a relationship with the Resort simply made sense. “The Resort—with its proximity to where we lived and its features and amenities in addition to its outstanding and well-deserved reputation—made us want to collaborate,” he says, noting that his family often enjoyed leisure time at the property. The Chateau d’Esclans brand, which Lichine established when he purchased the Chateau d’Esclans estate and vineyard in 2006, shares many qualities with the Resort, he says. “Understated elegance comes

to mind, as does quality relative to delivering a particular standard of living,” he says, about their common traits. “I produce world-class rosé, and the Resort is certainly in keeping with this proposition. So the synergy between both is evident.” He says the Resort is the ideal setting for sipping a glass of his vino. “I think of people enjoying a glass of Whispering Angel at any of the club’s venues where it is served and, as mentioned above, noting an excellent fit,” he says. “Having this experience at the Beach Club while facing the ocean resonates powerfully towards that end, and it really is unique, because the environment of the Resort physically transposes its members who come to relax and live well. You could say that our rosé adds a complementary consumer element to this agreeable experience.” Born in Bordeaux and educated in the States, Lichine learned about winemaking from his father, Alexis, who’s known as the “pope of wine” and wrote the respected reference book Wines of France. As a young man, Lichine started offering wine tours of France, became a sommelier and worked for a wine wholesaler and distributor before taking over the family’s Château Prieuré-Lichine at age 27. He later sold that property to acquire his current one and set out on his own. After taking the helm of Chateau d’Esclans, Lichine had a hunch that rosé was due for a resurgence—and an update in quality. He focused on creating a superior product and traveled throughout the United States to introduce it to vendors and convince them to sell it. Tasting was believing, and the trend took off.

KELLIE STENZEL GOLF RUNS in the family for Kellie Stenzel: Her grandfather was a PGA professional, and her father played on the PGA Tour. So it should come as no surprise that Stenzel, after playing professionally for five years, is now considered one of the best golf instructors in the business. Her accolades include being named one of the Top 100 Teachers in the nation by Golf magazine for 16 years running as well as a Top 50 Teacher by Golf For Women magazine and one of the top teachers in New York by Golf Digest. Today, she’s the lead instructor at the Resort’s Kellie Stenzel Golf Academy. She says the partnership is a perfect fit. “My brand and the Resort both have quality and full service as top priorities,” she says. “My instructional team and I look to provide each and every person who visits us with a quality, fun, comfortable atmosphere where they receive whatever they desire to improve their games. From private lessons and clinics to golf schools and ju-

nior events, we look to give each and every golfer a better game, which always makes it more fun.” Stenzel says she tries to provide a memorable, multifaceted experience that is about more than solely athletics: “A unique and multilayered experience is a part of both the Resort and our academy.” For example, at the junior camp, children not only improve their golf handicaps but also enjoy meeting guest instructors, spending time at the gym, visiting the beach for bunker practice, participating in contests and more. “We pride ourselves on being family-oriented, and the instruction and the programs the Resort offers shows this commitment,” she says. “I was playing with my family recently, and our son, Matthew, had his first birdie on a par 4 at the Resort. This experience, like many others at the Resort, creates memories, and that is what it is all about.” Originally from Geneva, New York, Stenzel played four years of Division I women’s golf while attending Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. As a senior, her team came in second nationwide at the NCAA finals. She then traveled the world as a pro on the Futures Tour, the European Tour, the Asian Tour, South African Tour and the Australian Tour. The Palm Beach Gardens resident is also the author of three books, The Women’s Guide to Golf: A Handbook for Beginners, The Women’s Guide to Consistent Golf and The Women’s Guide to Lower Scores.

MICHELLE FARMER WITH BOUTIQUES in the Hamptons, Palm Beach and Puerto Rico, jewelry designer Michelle Farmer has talent to spare. But she doesn’t hog the spotlight. Her business, Michelle Farmer Collaborate, features her designs alongside jewelry, apparel and home décor by a variety of emerging brands. The common denominators of these products are quality craftsmanship and a fashionforward approach. Farmer, who divides her time between Palm Beach and the Hamptons, recently debuted her boutique, Michelle Farmer Collaborate at the Resort, in the lobby, offering resort wear and fine jewelry. The designer says she knew her concept would be right at home at the Resort after meeting with President John Tolbert and touring the grounds. “We fell in love with his vision, the architecture and the hotel’s exceptional customer service,” she says. “The majority of our stores have a light and airy vibe with a twist of Old World charm.” Her penchant for exceeding clients’ expectations dovetails with the Resort’s approach. “We are all about creating an exceptional experience for our customers and helping them take home a special memory from their trip,” she says. “We found that the professionalism of the hotel’s staff, the gorgeous architecture and the location made it an easy choice for us to open a store with the Boca Resort. We treat every person that walks through our doors like they are a guest in our home, and go out of our way to accommodate clientele in any way possible.” Just as the Resort offers a uniquely curated experience for

members and guests, so, too, does Farmer carefully select her merchandise. “We pride ourselves on having a beautiful curation of unique designers from across the globe along with my own designs. [We] also love to support local designers wherever we open our stores,” she says. “In most cases, the collections we have cannot be found in any other stores or they are one-of-a-kind. We find that this creates a fresh and exciting shopping experience.” She adds that the boutique also provides custom jewelry design and plans on hosting several special events, like trunk shows, during season. Farmer had been designing her own jewelry for five years before launching her self-named collection in 2001. Her second collection, unveiled in 2003, made a splash in Palm Beach, New York, St. Barth’s and East Hampton. After opening a boutique in East Hampton in 2006, she launched Michelle Farmer Collaborate. Her style merges contemporary design with a vintage vibe and a bohemian sensibility, featuring precious and semiprecious stones and baroque pearls.

JIMMY CONNORS FEW PERSONALITIES in the annals of tennis have been as big and bold as Jimmy Connors. Known for his competitiveness and bawdy behavior as much as his game-changing flat backhand, he held the world’s No. 1 ranking for 160 weeks straight from 1974 to 1977, setting a record at the time. He won eight majors and still holds three “open era” men’s singles records for titles won (109), matches won (1,256) and matches played (1,535). Over the years, his rivalries have become the stuff of legend. During his prime, Connors went head to head with contemporaries such as Brian Gottfried, Phil Dent, Harold Solomon, Raul Ramirez and Dick Stockton, as well as older players like Arthur Ashe and Ilie Nastase. Even as he aged, he didn’t shy away from young guns such as Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl and, in particular, the equally hot-headed John McEnroe, with whom he sparred 34 times between 1977 and 1991. Connors had one of the most impressive comebacks of all-time

when, in 1991, he reached the U.S. Open semifinals at the age of 39. Like McEnroe, Connors has done tennis commentating and analysis in his later years, and the two even commentated side by side at Wimbledon for three years, sparking heated debate. In 2013, Connors published The Outsider, his autobiography, which won for “Best Autobiography/Biography” at the British Sports Book Awards. Connors, who lives in South Florida, is now the resident tennis professional at the Resort, in partnership with Boca Tennis Academy, and members and guests have the chance to rub elbows with the Grand Slam champ during the Jimmy Connors Experience. This package, available for a half day or a full day, may include tennis, golf, speaking engagements or even a dinner with the pro. Connors spoke to World Tennis magazine in 2015 when he first came to the Resort and had introduced the Legends of Boca Experience, a four-day package featuring one-on-one time with the pro: “I now am a part of a new family of people in Boca. … It’s a great new change with a brand that can really take tennis to a whole new level. I really want people to come to Boca and to learn to play with us; you’re in the best surroundings, the best place to hone your skill and take your game to a higher level. The Legends of Boca is such an exciting experience, and you get to meet a lot of interesting, great people.”

MOLLY HILLENBRAND WHEN SHE isn’t at home in Boca Raton, Molly Hillenbrand is jetsetting across the globe, enjoying luxurious resorts and experiences along the way. And she shares every magical moment of her travels on her Instagram account, Allure of Travel, which has nearly 54,000 followers. She also runs the branding company HillenBRAND, which manages social media accounts for small businesses, and does event planning, sometimes in tandem with the Resort’s Boca by Design. To serve these various roles, Hillenbrand taps her experience as a publicist in New York City and as the owner of luxury children’s stores in Princeton, New Jersey and Chicago. Hillenbrand recently teamed up with the Resort to help promote its special events and to “create once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for its members and special, intimate luxury evenings curated for all the different members of the Resort.” She adds: “I love the Resort because I believe it offers its members incredible opportunities to experience so many different events in luxurious surroundings with fascinating people. Whether it’s yoga on the croquet lawn or a wine

tasting dinner on the greens, it’s always magical and breathtakingly beautiful, and you can tell that every effort is made to cater to each member’s needs. Every event I attend, I walk away meeting new friends with similar interests.” In fact, she notes that the Resort is a “home away from home” for her and her two daughters, and a place where they always feel welcome. They even enjoy a staycation every year before Christmas to enjoy the holiday activities, restaurants and Beach Club. “As a single mom in this community, it’s been a wonderful place for me to enjoy a happy hour with my girlfriends or attend these fun, cultured, luxurious events,” Hillenbrand says, “but this is also an exceptionally family-friendly resort, where my two girls and I love to spend the day by the pool or at the beach and grab a sundae at Serendipity after dining at my girls’ favorite restaurant, Lucca.” She also has a soft spot for the Waldorf Astoria Spa at the Resort. “The spa is one-of-a-kind and offers complete relaxation with the gorgeous private pool and the best stone massage I’ve ever had,” she says. “My girlfriends and I have loved coming here when we need to relax and unwind or celebrate each others’ birthdays or a special occasion.” v

NO MATTER where you look, there’s water, water everywhere at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. And there’s no better place to take advantage of everything the ocean has to offer than the Boca Beach Club and the Resort’s pristine halfmile stretch of private beach. To enjoy the beach and sea in all their glory, guests may opt for the Sea Level Experience, which the Resort debuted last year to bring beachfront luxury to new heights and complement its existing amenities. You may not want to get up again after settling into your own king-sized day bed—designed by Boucher Brothers, and the first of its kind on Florida’s east coast— replete with luxurious pillows and linens. Queen-sized day beds are also available, as well as upgrades such as oversized Bliss Lounge chairs, clamshell chaise lounges and umbrellas. While soaking up the sun and the sea breezes, you’ll enjoy firstclass service from head to toe (literally), including a personal beach attendant to grant your every wish and complimentary hand and foot massages from a reflexologist. Other perks include sunglasses cleaning, phone-charging equipment, a waterproof phone pouch and an Aquavault safe to lock up your belongings while you stroll on the beach or take a dip in one of the Beach Club’s three swimming pools. No aspect has been overlooked. The Sea Level experience also offers three daily refreshments to keep guests happy and cool. The Sunrise Amenity, from 10 to 11 a.m., features a tasty welcome 76

body-boarding for the ultimate “surf-on-turf” experience. Special events throughout the year feature competitive surfer meet-andgreets and special FLOW Tour competitions. Brush up on those surf skills and take advantage of Surf Boca, which offers group and solo lessons—plus clinics—in the ocean for adults and children. The Surf School includes a rash guard, a customized video, photos and onehour use of a surfboard. Grab a paddleboard to see what the whole “SUP” movement is all about; the generously sized boards are great for stand-up paddleboarding novices and for cruising, crosstraining and tackling small waves. Or take in views of the shoreline on a kayak. This water sport has grown in popularity over the past decade, and it’s a great chance to connect with nature in an ecofriendly way. For a closer look at

Boca Raton’s famed Red Reef, teeming with colorful fish and marine life, dive under the waves on a snorkeling adventure.

ON THE FLY To rev things up, opt for a WaveRunner ride or tour—or try the hottest new water sport, flyboarding. This exhilarating experience begins with training from a certified instructor. (Don’t worry about a wait; most guests are flying within minutes.) Strap on the flyboard, which is attached to a Jet Ski with a hose, and begin flying across and above the water. With some simple maneuvers, you can hover, dive, spin and soar up to 25 feet into the air. Many Resort guests call flyboarding the highlight of their vacation. Other aquatic activities at your fingers include boating, boogie boards and skim boarding—plus banana rides and floats so the little ones can enjoy the fun, too. If they just want to build a sand castle or fly a kite while running along the sand, that’s no problem. From sea to shore, the Resort has thought of every detail to make your waterfront experience an unforgettable one. All you need to do is dive in. v

DESTINATION CELEBRATION Personalizing your Resort revelry is all the rage, say our event-planning experts.

WHEN IT comes to planning a special event, you want yours to be an affair to remember. And, with its rich history, natural beauty and first-class amenities, there are few event venues as unforgettable as the Boca Resort. No matter what you’re planning—from weddings and reunions to birthday celebrations and girls’ getaways—the Resort is the prefect backdrop for embracing the hottest trends in special events. Just ask George Petrocelli, director of catering at the Resort. He says that one of the biggest wedding trends he’s seen lately kicks in long before the big day even begins. He calls it “shredding for the wedding.” “With awareness of a healthier lifestyle, many couples desire to be

in their best shape for their wedding day,” he says, noting that the Resort’s health club is a great place to break a sweat. “In addition to the basic diet behaviors, committing yourself to an intense workout routine [is important]. Whether you hire a personal trainer or participate in an overall class, cross training, core strengthening and spinning workouts will help you achieve this goal.” Another pre-event category where brides and grooms are making their mark is with memorable invitations featuring details like custom calligraphy; tropical, watercolor and ombré designs; and foil lettering. “Wedding invitations should reflect the personality and unique style of the couple,” Petrocelli says. “Certainly, the theme as well as the destination for the nuptials should be incorporated into the overall design. When your guests receive the invitation, not only do you set the tone for the grand day, you tease them for what is yet to come.” Part of the planning process that many couples

are skipping these days is booking a kennel (or doggie day care) for Fido for the wedding day. “More and more brides and grooms are including their furry friends in their weddings,” he says. “Whether it is a surprise social media engagement announcement, an upstaged ring bearer, a fashionable flower girl or fun-loving photos, pets of all sorts are incorporated into these memorable moments.” When it comes to décor, rose gold is very much en vogue. Petrocelli suggests incorporating it into linens, table runners, vases, centerpieces, place settings or the wedding cake. Another popular trend is using hanging decorative items that set a distinctive mood. For example, a floral sphere above the sweetheart table or a lucite picture frame inscribed with guests’ names (instead of a seating chart or place cards) are great options that the Resort’s onsite Boca by Design event planning service has executed.

92

|

After all the aforementioned shredding, indulging in over-the-top food and drink is in order for the couple—and their guests. “Today’s expectations have never been higher,” Petrocelli says. “With the popularity of network culinary programs and the latest consumer apps, guests’ palates are more discerning. They are very specific in their likes and dislikes and can clearly articulate flavor profiles. Brides and grooms not only want the food to taste good, they want the menu to tie into the entire experience.” He says that includes dishes that reflect one’s heritage or upbringing or hearken back to a favorite vacation or an alma mater. To start the evening, Petrocelli says “shots and bites” are a popular option these days and can include pairings such as margaritas and shrimp tacos, vodka and caviar or local ale and a burger. For a sweet ending, many couples are opting for dessert stations and bars centering on nitrogen-churned ice cream or hot chocolate. That hands-on approach has become a fan favorite at all types of events, says Colin Cowie, celebrity event designer and lifestyle guru: “‘Make your own’ stations have been blowing up. Guests are able to craft their own mimosas, sangrias and more with drink stations. Similarly, cocktail food

has taken a turn from the typical chicken skewers and finger sandwiches toward fully constructed ‘mini meals.’ Mini eggs Benedict, potpies and even chicken and waffles have made an appearance.” Another kind of station you may not have considered—a phone charging station—is essential for a special event with many teens or young adults, such as a bar/bat mitzvah, a sweet 16 or a quinceañera. “Phone-charging stations are huge,” Cowie says. “Every young adult has their phone glued to their hands, and the worst thing that can happen during a party is for it to die.” He’s also eschewed the station for something a bit more appealing: “We’ve hired a male model to be in charge of holding and charging guests’ phones all night. He would walk around with a jacket that was filled with cords and power supply—just in case!” Yet another digital innovation

that can help distinguish your event is to create customized emojis for the big day. “Since the birth of emojis, everyone wants one that looks just like them,” Cowie says. “For a chic NYC birthday party we threw, we designed emojis of the birthday girl that were sent before, during and after the party to all of the guests.” Sarah Renee Lowell, owner of Sara Renee Events in Parkland, agrees with Petrocelli that personalization is all the rage right now for weddings, with brides and grooms creating custom logos, offering signature cocktails and even bringing in chefs from their favorite restaurants for catering. Some of those signature cocktails might be ontrend “batch” drinks, which are “not individual bartender drinks but big vats of custom-mixed punches and cocktails,” she says. She also notes that having a DJ accompanied by an instrumentalist, such as a guitarist or a banjo player, is more popular than a full band these days: “It gives the best of both worlds.” For milestone birthday parties, staying on top of the tech factor goes a long way with young guests, Lowell says. That includes custom Snapchat filters, tech gadget favors and custom hashtags. “With teens, we really try to do as much branding as we can,” she says. “It’s all about coming up with amazing slogans and logos.” v

A RESORT LIFE, WELL-LIVED Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is easy with the Resort’s multitude of indoor and outdoor programs and activities.

THE BOCA Raton Resort & Club is famously known as a luxurious destination for families and individuals around the world. But what some do not know is the comprehensive, personal approach that applies to each individual that starts or continues his or her wellness journey at the Resort. Although there’s plenty of pampering going on at the Resort Spa, there’s just as much hard work at the Health Club and Beach Club— mentally and physically. The varied programs, trainers and classes give guests and members the necessary means to nurture bodies and minds in a way that appeals to them. Don’t forget nutrition, either. Resort restaurants have plenty of healthy options to stay the course.

INSIDE TRACK The Resort offers several options to accomplish personal wellness goals, whether through a membership or as a guest. Following a $1 million renovation three years ago, the Resort’s onsite 98

Health Club equips visitors with everything they need to achieve their fitness ambitions. New to the Health Club this fall is the InBody fitness assessment system. “It’s a noninvasive fitness assessment system,” says Jodi Sullivan, senior director of fitness and wellness. “It’s like stepping on the scale, and you get an enormous amount of information: Your BMI, heart rate, etc. It gives the participant a good view of where they stand.” After using the InBody system, a guest or member can integrate a variety of fitness equipment, classes and trainers to pursue their wellness needs. “We offer all state-of-the-art cardio equipment,” Sullivan says. Each and every Life Fitness machine has a viewing screen to track workouts. “For me, cardio can be daunting,” Sullivan adds. “With this cardio equipment, you can be biking somewhere in Arizona. It’s a really neat way to keep you entertained.” Another popular spot within the Health Club is the stretch area. “We really wanted to focus on having that open area,” Sullivan says. Here, guests and members can stretch before and after workouts, complete a yoga routine, or take a moment or two for relaxation and reflection. There’s a functional training Synergy machine by Life Fitness, kettlebells, a boxing bag and TRX bands in an adjoining room, too. If group exercises are more appealing, the Health Club offers 66 classes per week. Many of

EXOTIC ESCAPE After a hard day’s workout, guests and members can restore their bodies and minds with an afternoon (or entire day) at the Resort Spa. Named the “No. 1 Spa in the World” in Condé Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice Awards in 2014, the Waldorf Astoria Spa at the Boca Resort supports individuals on their wellness journeys by providing self-care massage, body wraps and other holistic experiences. these take place in the renovated yoga studio above the club. Each class is an opportunity for participants to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility or boost their heart rate, depending on personal fitness goals. “We have barre classes, Pilates, boot camp classes,” Sullivan says. “Zumba is quite popular, as well as yoga.” Taking advantage of the Resort’s beautiful surroundings, yoga classes are offered on the beach at the Beach Club and by evening candlelight in the Spa Garden at the Resort. Personal trainers are available for one-on-one or small group sessions. The Resort has between eight and 10 accredited trainers on staff. “They are certified through various organizations: Pilates, functional training, connective exercise,” Sullivan says. “They’re quite skilled and can accommodate a wide demographic.”

for a game of bocce ball, a round of golf, private tennis or golf instructions and surf lessons. Walks through the Resort gardens, by the pool, or even a stroll along the beach are wonderful ways to incorporate wellness into a daily routine. “We’re really lucky to have the croquet lawn right across the street from the Health Club,” Sullivan says. “It’s a popular place to host group events in the morning.” For example, the lawn is the perfect place to host a group tai chi session, for 100 people or more. Rounding out the plethora of outdoor wellness activities available at the Resort is the bike rental. Sullivan says a new line of beach cruisers and sport trek bikes are conveniently accessible for adults and children staying on property. “They love taking advantage of the great outdoors,” Sullivan says. “Some will go from here over to the Beach Club. Some will rent a bike for the day and take it around the Resort or the beach.” No matter where cyclists end up, Sullivan says having the option to explore the Resort and surrounding space is extremely attractive.

Granada, Spain, the Spa allows guests and members to mentally and emotionally escape and rejuvenate without leaving the Resort. Just past the main entrance and plush, spacious men’s and women’s locker rooms is the Ritual Bath, a Spa staple. Smooth stone, carved marble and colorful, handcrafted tiles complement grand arches and a central whirlpool, surrounded by nine individual mineral baths. Forty-four treatment rooms are available to help individuals reach their goals with a relaxing Vitamin C facial, a signature Artisan Massage or even a customized treatment package. This distraction-free

environment provides serenity and natural healing with personalized service. “[We want to] remove discomfort to help with relaxation, circulation and stress relief,” says Vanessa Carter, the spa director. “It’s results-driven to help individuals with their needs.” Additionally, the spa offers a full-service salon catering to every aesthetic demand: haircuts, styling and coloring, manicures, pedicures and packages, Carter says. There’s also a private outdoor pool and a café full of healthy menu options. With such abundant wellness opportunities, it’s impossible to get bored or veer off track from fitness goals. The Resort has options everywhere, inside and out, for kids, adults and families. “We’re really looking to present a journey to our members and guests,” Sullivan says. Start that journey today. v

LUXURY GETAWAYS Escape the day-to-day with a Waldorf Astoria vacation.

THE BOCA Raton Resort & Club is just one of many fine Waldorf Astoria and associated brand hotels around the globe. Continue the Boca Resort magic at one of our sister properties on your next business trip or vacation, and have the world of luxury and superlative lodging at your fingertips.

T H E G RA N D WA IL E A JUST A 23-minute flight from the bustling Hawaiian capital of Honolulu sits the three islands of Maui, its more tranquil southeastern neighbor. Less dense with tourists than Oahu, it’s a place where modern luxuries and timeless natural habitats comingle. The Grand Wailea, a 40-acre Waldorf Astoria resort, anchors Maui’s sunny south side, an aquatic paradise full of crescent-shaped beaches and islets,

sprawling oceanfront parks and a coral reef teeming with turtles and tropical fish. The resort itself channels Maui’s status as one of the globe’s most enticing water worlds, immediately evident from the grand waterfall greeting visitors at the entrance. The natural elements were a driving force for developer Takeshi Sekiguchi when he opened the resort in 1991. “It was based on a love he had for nature and also on Hawaiian elements of water, plants and flowers,” says Yvonne Biegel, director of public relations and marketing. “There’s water elements flowing throughout the resort, so

it’s similar to the Hawaiian land division of Ahupua’a, which is like ‘from mountain to ocean.’” Grand Wailea’s most impressive water feature is its Wailea Canyon Activity Pool, a 2,000-foot-long, 770,000-gallon structure of nine individual pools connected by a river. This allows guests to experience the excitement of whitewater rapids and gentle currents without leaving the pool area itself. Other features within the activity pool include six waterfalls, a Tarzan rope swing, three Jacuzzis, a swimup grotto bar and the world’s first water elevator—a surreal way to travel that needs to be experienced to be believed. The same goes for the Fishpipe, a unique barrel ride that simulates a waterslide as it moves up to three people at a time at 11 mph. Biegel compares the experience to being inside a bingo ball as it dances around a blower machine. A more relaxing water escape can be found

at the Hibiscus Pool, a nearly 5,000-square foot, adults-only destination identified by the giant hibiscus flower designed with mosaic tiles on the pool’s bottom. As the largest spa in Hawaii, the resort’s Grand Spa is its own aquatic sanctuary. Guests who book a spa treatment begin with an hour-long immersion into the Healing Waters of Maui, a series of five specialty baths featuring therapeutically vetted essential oils and native plants, minerals, herbs, fruits and spices. “It gives you an hour to relax and get into the zone, so that when you go into your massage, you’re not spending the first 15 minutes trying to relax and get into the massage,” Biegel says. “People love it.” Back on dry land, visitors can enjoy the Grand Wailea’s three golf courses, extensive art collection and top-shelf restaurants, including the recently transformed Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, with its island cuisine and handcrafted cocktails, and Bistro Molokini, with its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Unlike some vacation spots whose appeal is seasonal, there is no bad time to visit Maui. “Hawaii always has great weather year-round,” Biegel says. “When it’s snowing by you, it’s warm and sunny here.”

The iconic Hotel Del Coronado; below, its quaint beach village

T H E H OT E L D E L CO RO N A DO THE HOTEL Del Coronado— known by its countless repeat guests as simply “The Del”—has enough history to fill a Ken Burns series. When the destination opened in Coronodo, California, in 1888, it became the largest resort hotel in the world, standing today as the second-largest wooden structure in the U.S. It has hosted every president from John F. Kennedy to Barack Obama, and other world leaders and monarchs stretching back to William Henry Harrison, King Kalakaua of Hawaii and Edward, Prince of Wales. Its Hollywood guest list is no less im-

pressive, from Rudolph Valentino and Mae West to Brad Pitt and Oprah Winfrey. Just across the San Diego Bay, the Del has evolved for generations on the strength of its glittering beachfront locale, the standard of excellence in its dining and spa services, and its one-of-a-kind amenities. Times have changed since the early years of the hotel, which counted an ostrich farm among its guest activities. Today, visitors can don a colorful fin and channel their inner Ariel in the Mermaid Fitness program, a 45-minute fusion of swimming, cardio, strength training and core exercises. You can also enjoy s’mores and fireside franks at a private beach fire pit. Around Halloween, share your favorite spooky story around the flickering light, and you might receive a cameo from

Everyone is welcome at “The Del.”

“Kate Morgan,” the Del’s resident ghost! Elsewhere, you can partake in a glass of vino while painting the San Diegan skyline, with instruction from a master artist. And if you visit during the holiday season, you can lace up a pair of bladed boots for Skating by the Sea, where the giant ice rink on the Windsor Lawn will be illuminated with winter cheer. These are a few of the guest upgrades that have steered the property into the 21st century, as it continues to generate headlines. The Del officially became a Hilton Curio Collection hotel this past summer, and within months it brought exciting polo professionals to the resort for a Labor Day weekend special event. It also announced the hiring of Stefan Peroutka, a classically trained chef with an impeccable resume, as its executive chef. The Austrian-born toque presides over the resort’s seven restaurants, including the locally inspired seaside enclave 1500 Ocean; the legendary, regionally inspired Crown Room Brunch; and Eno, an artisan pizzeria with a neighborhood ambience. Through the changes, the hotel’s iconic brand—and its 130-year history—has lost none of its timeless charm. Whether you indulge in a Coastal View Room, an Ocean Towers Suite or an uber-luxe Beach Village Suite, the Hotel Del Coronado invites its guests to party like the royals and rock stars that have come before them. What’s good enough for Clark Gable is good enough for us. 106

T H E WA L D O RF A STO RIA BE VE R LY H I LLS THE WALDORF Astoria Beverly Hills is worth the wait. Ten years after its 2008 approval, at an estimated cost of $200 million, the brand’s first new build in California has opened to the public, and it conjures the very sort of Hollywood royalty that will populate its rooms each awards season. The hotel’s location is as plum as it gets. It sits at the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica

boulevards, overlooking L.A.’s Golden Triangle district, which includes the legendary Rodeo Drive. Once inside, the Waldorf doesn’t hide its wow factor, with the lobby’s gold-accented marble floors, custom-designed chandelier and artful symmetry encapsulating the vintage art deco style that continues across the sprawling property. According to Managing Director Luc Delafosse, the design is “inspired by the contemporary interpretation of Hollywood glamour and the Streamline Moderne style of the 1930s and ‘40s,” courtesy of renowned interior design firm Pierre-Yves Ro-

chon, whose projects include the Shangri-La in Paris and the Savoy in London. “In the public spaces of the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, guests will discover chic touches throughout the hotel, from the triple-height lobby to hand-painted murals and elegant Lalique installations,” Delafosse adds. “Richly upholstered furniture in soothing tones of celadon, taupe and white is accented by spectacular pieces of art, creating an environment that is both sophisticated and relaxing.” The hotel boasts 170 rooms— including 51 suites—and its guest activities stretch to its sun-dappled apex, where rooftop yoga is offered on weekends. This is also where visitors can take a dip in the rooftop pool, and where diners can enjoy lobster burgers and pretzeldusted calamari at the Rooftop by JG, which one critic has called “L.A.’s coolest new rooftop bar.” The JG stands for Jean-George

Vongerichten, the acclaimed chef who designed all three of the hotel’s culinary concepts, including its signature fine-dining destination, Jean-George Beverly Hills. It’s where you’ll find everything from caviar to pizza. “A savvy businessman, restaurateur and one of the world’s most famous chefs, Vongerichten has an impressive three-star Michelin background,” Delafosse says. “Through his extensive involvement in every aspect of his restaurants—from concept to menu to architectural design, as well as staff selection and trainings—[he] is constantly developing fresh ideas inspired by his travels to impact the global culinary landscape.” Guests can also partake in Los Angeles’ only La Prairie Day Spa, featuring products from the famed Swiss beauty brand, and a 24-hour fitness center with top-of-the-line workout equipment and technology. That tech-savviness extends to the guest rooms, where iPads allow users to adjust lighting, drapes and entertainment at the touch of a screen. Combine all of this with True Waldorf Service— the personal touches and bespoke details tailored to each individual guest, from pre-arrival through departure—and it’s easy to see why Forbes recently declared that, “as luxury entities go, [the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills] is a game changer.” v

Q&A: DONALD MARTINY This abstract artist creates poetry in motion, from New York City’s Ground Zero to the walls of the Boca Resort.

THE PAINTINGS of Donald Martiny feel alive. Deceptively simple yet cerebrally complex, the artist’s bold, colorful, aggressive brush strokes, formed from polymer and saturated pigment, evoke unity and flight. This might be a reason he was commissioned by One World Trade Center to create uplifting installation art for the resilient monument’s interior. Like the new building, his works conjure the sense of a phoenix rising. A New York native whose work has enjoyed 22 solo exhibitions since 2010, Martiny is one of more than 35 artists represented by Deborah Sponder, who maintains an eclectic gallery at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, and who is responsible for the breathtaking sculptures and paintings that dot the property. Martiny’s work can 108

|

be seen in the Palm Court and the Baker Sponder Gallery. In this candid interview with Mizner’s Dream, Martiny shares his process, objectives, unique approach to naming his paintings and much more. Can you describe your process? How does a painting begin? I begin by making many small sketches in oil or acrylic paint on paper. A wall in my studio is literally covered with these. I remove the ones that don’t excite me over time, while weeks, months or even years later I develop the ones that still interest me into finished paintings. My large works involve an enormous investment in time, energy and materials. A large painting can use as much as 30 gallons of paint, so I want to feel confident that I can stand behind the work before I commit. I paint on the floor with large brushes or with my hands. It’s extremely physical. Some painters paint from the wrist, some from the shoulder; I use my whole body as I move around the painting. Once the painting is dry, I lift the paint off the

floor and place it onto a piece of aluminum and trace the form. I then cut the aluminum to the shape of the painting and mount the paint onto the aluminum. Your paintings have a sense of immediacy and rawness, complete with rough, self-reflexive globs and smears. What’s your logic behind this style? I am interested in visual language. What I want to do with the paintings is to establish this relationship of NOW. You (the viewer) are in the moment, in front of a painting … and something happens. I want the space between the painting and the viewer to become activated. This, I hope, will encourage the viewer to engage and form a relationship with the work. In museums or galleries, viewers look at works from afar, then step up close to view the brushstrokes. I believe we all do this to see the process; to see how the painting was built, perhaps to experience the making of the work in a visceral way. By making oversized brushstrokes, the viewer is immediately placed up close to the work. The intimacy is immediate. There is no illusion in my work. Historically, rectangular-shaped paintings serve as portals—windows or doors we look through to view a scene in another space or time. I want my paintings to live in the same space as the viewer, to reach out to the viewer and to have a dialogue with the space around the work as well. How do you know when a work is done? That is an excellent question. One answer is that they are never done. While the painting may not change, the viewer is different each time they see the work. So the 110

Art Walk.indd 110

|

experience of looking at the work is never exactly the same. I want the work to thrill me and inspire me. How can I expect it to excite another viewer if it doesn’t work on me? I get very excited about my work. That said, I will sometimes make the painting again and again until I am satisfied. I recently made a large work at least seven times. It completely took over my life and my studio for months. I was thoroughly exhausted when I finished it. But it was worth it. What attracts you to the abstract form? As a student I decided I needed to be able to make art that looked like the art I was seeing in museums before I could give myself permission to move forward and find my own voice. I studied life drawing, figure and landscape painting for many years. But eventually I needed to find my own way. Rather than re-present an image, I wanted to present a new image. Light, form, color and texture are the elements that directly affect a pure experience and feeling. I found that more interesting than storytelling, symbols or metaphors.

S C U L PT UR E TO UR S AND MORE ➤ In addition to visiting the Baker Sponder Gallery in the Resort lobby, guests and members can enjoy a self-guided sculpture tour, where works by blue-chip artists including Fernando Botero, Lynn Chadwick, George Sagal and Boaz Vaadia tower like sentinels throughout the property. These tours can be supplemented with audio and web-based information by following the telephone symbol or QR code on the text panel of each sculpture. For still more artistic nourishment, Resort guests are invited to visit the Baker Sponder Gallery’s new flagship location, which opened in September 2017 at 413 E. Palmetto Park Road—walking distance from the Resort. In season (November through April), the gallery’s exhibition schedule will rotate bimonthly with one- and two-person shows.

the past or worrying about the future. It brought me to the present and now, somehow, I feel hopeful. I feel I can go on. Please tell the artist thank you for me.” That was the best compliment I could have ever received. Of course, that is an extreme case. How do you define the enigmatic titles of your paintings? I believe you are referring to my extinct language series. Years ago I spent some time in the Amazon jungle, in the Madidi rainforest. I stayed with a small group of indigenous people who spoke a language that less than 200 people spoke. The language was a basic part of their culture, a way of seeing things, defining things. It occurred to me that, as an artist, I am inventing my own language—my own way of seeing things. So I decided, for that series, to name my paintings after extinct languages. The paintings at the World Trade Center are named after the two languages that were spoken in lower Manhattan before the settlers arrived: Lenape and Unami.

What do you hope audiences experience when seeing your work? I only know how I experience the paintings. I work hard to make paintings that are joyful, positive and hopeful. I am sure people respond in many different ways to the works. When I had just installed one of my monumental paintings at One World Trade Center, a man entered the building clearly very troubled and agitated. He had a very dark mood about him, hands shaking, lips trembling. He looked down at the floor, then at the painting, then at me. He quickly walked towards me and said, “I just had the worst 48 hours of my life. I honestly didn’t know if I was going to make it. Then I entered this building and saw this lovely painting. It completely changed my mood. It shocked me out of thinking about

Why is the Boca Resort a good fit for your work? I show my work here because of my relationship with Deborah Sponder. She and the others at the gallery are wonderful people. They understand my work, what I am trying to do, and I trust them completely. I am a fan of the other artists they represent, too. Additionally, the light at the Boca Resort enhances the color and texture in the work, much like the light in Nice added life to Dufy and Matisse’s palettes. As you mentioned, your work was commissioned by One World Trade Center in New York. What did this commission mean to you, and how does your work “play” in such a surrounding? The paintings were commissioned by Douglas Durst, and are on permanent loan to the building from the Durst family. Because the paintings were too large to bring into the building (bigger than any of the doors), I moved my studio into the building and made the paintings on site. It took two months to make them. I thoroughly enjoyed responding to the space, the light and the movement of the people in the building. I am honored to have work in the most iconic building in the western hemisphere. v

This is the Concours d’ Elegance, and it comes to the Boca Resort February 23-25, 2018. Comedian and TV star Tim Allen will be the gala comedian headline entertainer. Allen starred in the long-running hit ABC series “Home Improvement,” where he garnered a Golden Globe Award, an Emmy nomination and the People’s Choice Award for “Favorite Male Performer in a Television Series” for eight years in a row. In 2011, he returned to 112

His other films include starring roles in the box-office hits “Wild Hogs,” “Galaxy Quest” and “The Shaggy Dog.” Allen will join Jay Leno, from the “Jay Leno’s Garage” TV series, as a celebrity judge. Auto enthusiasts can view Marques of the Year, Lincoln-Mercury and a very special presentation by the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA), “Cars Throughout the Decades of the Past Century.” The Boca Raton Concours d’ Elegance is the world’s largest by a charity, and fully

benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County—and the 12,500 at-risk youth it serves. The Concours was founded and directed by Rick and Rita Case of the Rick Case Automotive Group, who have continued their leadership and hands-on involvement over the last 12 years. “The entire Concours team is comprised of a group of more than 300 volunteers who donate their time to the planning and execution of the event,” says Brian Quail, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. “In 2017, the event attracted thousands of attendees and to date has raised more than $10 million for our organization.” The following is the schedule of events: • Friday, February 23: The weekend starts with the duPont Registry™ Live Hangar Party at Atlantic Aviation at the Boca Raton Airport. Guests will experience gourmet tastings from more than 20 of South Florida’s finest restaurants and indulge in an array of fine wines and spirits as well as live entertainment. Guests can also peruse an impressive selection of exotic cars, motorcycles, extravagant boats, private jets, premier vendors and more. Additionally, guests can meet Indy 500 race car driver Jack Harvey on behalf of AutoNation’s partnership. • Saturday, February 24: This is a day of educational automotive seminars designed for the true automotive collector enthusiast. The Grand Gala Dinner, Auction & Show will follow, featuring a cocktail hour and silent auction, gourmet dinner and live auction, including one-of-a-kind trips and experience packages, luxury jewelry and more. The Automotive Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to Norman Braman, founder and owner of Braman Motorcars. The National Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to Bob Carter, Executive VP of Toyota North America. The evening will be capped by a

stellar performance by one of the most respected and successful comedians in the country, Tim Allen. • Sunday, February 25: This day will feature the Boca Raton Concours d’ Elegance automobile and motorcycle exhibition with celebrity judges Jay Leno and Tim Allen, who will walk through the show field meeting automobile and motorcycle owners and event attendees as they search for their favorite automobile and motorcycle to present the Jay Leno Big Dog Garage Award and the Tim Allen Award. Guests from around the world will experience an automotive showcase like no other, featuring vehicles and motorcycles from an array of time periods. Other judges include Chief Judge Dr. Paul Sable and Chief Honorary Judge Steve Moskowitz, Executive Director of AACA. Additionally, Grand Marshal Wayne Carini, host of “Chasing Classic Cars,” joins the group for another stellar year along with Master of Ceremonies Bill Rothermel and Tom duPont, who will select the finest vintage, antique, classic and exotic vehicles based on period, presentation and overall style. Also judging will be David Schultz, chairman of the 2017 Lincoln Motor Car Foundation. Once the show kicks off, guests are invited to walk through a series of vendor tents and enjoy a selection of gourmet food, wine and cocktails from more than 20 of South Florida’s finest restaurants at the Concours d’ Gourmet Pavilion. An exclusive brunch with Jay Leno and Tim Allen happens Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m., where guests can join Leno and Allen for dining and a Q&A session. ASSET & LAWSUIT PROTECTION to Protect Everything You Own From Everyone, Every Time! Lawsuits have become the next biggest business, especially since the economic downturn. They’re a cheap way for people to make lots of money, often with an investment of just a few hours’ time. Consider -- the plaintiff may never even have to prove a thing; the prospect of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills can scare a defendant into opting for a settlement without ever putting up a fight. Even if he did nothing wrong. No one’s immune from lawsuits, but people with a lot of assets showing are especially vulnerable. If someone thinks you’ve got a lot to lose – and thus, they’ve got a lot to gain – you become a choice target. People who are less affluent are vulnerable in a different way: If a person with $100,000 in assets gets sued for $1 million, they’ll be wiped out, whereas the person with $5 million can survive a $1 million lawsuit.

Protect your assets with liens. What is a $100,000 car worth if you owe $95,000? What is a $1 million house worth if you owe $950,000? Take out lines of credit. Record mortgages against your property. Make all of your assets valueless. Become an unattractive candidate for a lawsuit. Transfer your assets to a protective entity. The key to Asset Protection is to own nothing while controlling everything. Transfer any non-exempt assets out of your name to protective entities such as trusts, LLC’s (limited liability companies), limited partnerships, etc. Utilize International Asset Protection. Enjoy an even greater degree of privacy and debtor protection with the many additional legal and procedural obstacles that creditors have to face in International jurisdictions. Keep your plan up to date. Laws change every year. Have your plan reviewed yearly.

Don’t rely solely on liability insurance. Buy as much insurance as you can; it’s cheap and it helps you sleep at night. But realize that 70 percent of claims are not covered.
