elcome to Boca Raton, an award-winning city in which to live, work and visit. At the epicenter of Boca Raton is the Boca Raton Resort & Club, where it all started. More than 90 years ago famed architect Addison Mizner acquired more than 1,500 acres to formulate a master plan for the city of Boca Raton. Consistent with today’s developers, Mizner built the Cloister Inn (the east side of the Cloister building) to give homebuyers a taste of what the Boca Raton lifestyle would be. Fast forward to today, as city leaders make Boca Raton an example of modernizing a city while retaining a great respect for its past. The visionary development that continues in 2015 will make Boca Raton one of the top pedestrianfriendly, affluent waterfront communities in the country. The Boca Raton Resort & Club has run a parallel course with the city in terms of its own modernization, one that we can only trust would make Addison Mizner proud. Since 2005, more than $250 million as been spent to elevate the facilities of the Boca Raton Resort & Club above today’s luxury traveler’s standards. Of late, the historic Cloister building, restaurants, public areas and health club all have undergone considerable redesign and investment. The Beach Club just celebrated its 5th anniversary after being redesigned and renovated, reopening in 2009. The newest addition to the Resort programming is the Flow House, featuring the FlowRider™ and Shaka Bar and Grill adjacent to the Great Hall. The Boca Raton Resort & Club is at the peak of its form, and continues to evolve as an international luxury destination. This, combined with an incredible team of hospitality professionals—many from some of the finest hospitality and culinary schools—assure you a memorable stay at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. Again, welcome to our city and to this legendary Resort. Know that all 1,800 of our associates view it as a privilege to earn our livelihoods here, and an even greater privilege to serve you. Sincerely,
Richard Hayduk

SURF’S UP!
It’s here, and it’s radical! Check out the Resort’s new FlowRider, master of the “sheet wave” that re-creates the challenge of ocean waves in an enclosed pool. This exciting new addition to the Resort promises thrills for the whole family—and yet another way to learn how to body surf or traditionally surf—in our own backyard. Water sports are big at the Resort, and its new surf school dovetails nicely with FlowRider fans and those who want to tackle real ocean waves. Morgan Baer, whose company Costa del Este runs the Resort’s water sports program, says surfing is a natural, considering the Resort’s location. The warmer, generally calmer, waters that hug South Florida’s coastline are inviting for people of all ages and abilities who want to surf, paddleboard, kayak, snorkel, sail, drive a Jet Ski and more. Aspiring surfers—children and adults— learn to ride the waves at the Beach Club. Members and guests may choose among three-hour weekday clinics, private lessons and one-hour daily surf classes—or slip right over to the FlowRider to hone their skills.

Monkey Man
Addison Mizner is the iconic architect of Boca Raton and Palm Beach, and it is his vision that defined the Boca Raton Resort & Club in the early years of the Florida land boom. Aside from his legendary architecture, Mizner is also known for his love of exotic pets, specifically a spider monkey named Johnnie Brown. Legend has it that Mizner—clad in silk pajamas, with Johnnie Brown on one shoulder and a macaw or a toucan on the other—would wake the hotel’s chef late at night for a midnight snack he invented, the “Bocaroon”— a chocolate, orange and coconut macaroon. Mizner ate the chocolate himself, gave the monkey the orange and shared the coconut with his bird. Today, Johnnie Brown is buried in Palm Beach—one of only two graves on the island. He was laid to rest in the courtyard of Via Mizner, Addison Mizner’s self-styled home off Worth Avenue. His epitaph reads: “Johnnie Brown, the human monkey.”
1988: The property
becomes known as the Boca Raton Resort & Club and acquires the Boca Country Club on Congress Avenue, about seven miles from the Cloister, featur-
ing luxury homes and condominiums, a championship 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, a fitness center and dining facilities for hotel guests, club members and property residents.
1991:
The Boca Raton Resort & Club undergoes an $11 million renovation, bringing the total refurbishing expenditures to $55 million since 1983.
The UlTImaTe GolfING TradITIoN Golf at the Boca Raton Resort & Club is a time-honored tradition. For almost 80 years, golfers from around the world have been coming here to play a course that was once the domain of golf legends like Tommy Armour and Sam Snead. Opened in 1926, the majestic 6,253-yard, par-71 course has been offering golfers legendary holes and eyecatching beauty. There are few holes anywhere like the Resort’s 13th, with a waterfall in front of the tee and a stream that winds away from the challenging green. The signature hotel course is one of two courses available to hotel guests and club members. With 100-yearold banyans lining wide fairways, golfers can easily get a sense of what it might have been like to play the game with The Silver Scot and Slammin’ Sam, as Armour and Snead were known, respectively.
Boca Raton Resort & Club is proud to offer the latest instructional programming utilized by the best golfers in the world. Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Golf Fitness Instruction will help you realize a fuller potential in your golf swing. Each session is tailored by analyzing your specific strengths, flexibilities, injuries and swing fundamentals. Using this combined approach, the Resort develops the most efficient swing that is unique to each individual. Your TPI golf instructor will also recommend future courses of action to benefit your continued growth and wellness following each session. With a team of TPI golf, fitness and medical professionals located here at the Resort, your game and your health will surely trend in a positive direction. For more information, call Jimmy Gascoigne, PGA head golf professional and Level 3 TPI golf instructor, at 561/447-3411.
All That Glitters
There’s nothing like a little bling to add sparkle to a holiday. And Altier Jewelers off the lobby of the Resort is the perfect place to indulge yourself—or someone you love. Originally founded by Joseph and Marjorie Altier in 1960, Altier Jewelers was the first jewelry store in Boca Raton. Today, Altier Jewelers is owned and operated by Cutler Altier, a thirdgeneration grandson of the founders, and offers watch experts, GIA Graduate Gemologists, and master jewelers and watchmakers. The Resort branch of this fine jewelry store specializes in great service, and shows that the best things do, in fact, come in small boxes.
GIVING
With great wealth comes great responsibility. There are more than 1,100 charities in Boca Raton, one of the top 30 grant makers in Florida and hundreds of philanthropists who routinely put their money where their mouths are. It’s hard to top that kind of heart in a community.

A Chef for All seAsons Chef Andrew roenbeck oversees the entire culinary landscape at the Boca raton resort & Club, attending to the smallest of details along the way. And this year, it’s all about healthy choices.
B
oca Resort executive chef Andrew Roenbeck began prepping to run the Resort’s $70 million-a-year food and beverage operation as a boy on Long Island, N.Y. As one of 10 children—six brothers and three sisters—meals were “mini-banquet events at breakfast, lunch and dinner,” he recalls, events mostly staged by his father and grandfather, who did most of the cooking with the kids expected to pitch in, guided by a daily schedule written up by his parents. With his family’s encouragement, Roenbeck went from accomplished amateur to trained professional, attending the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., and graduating in 1982. After stints in France with renowned chefs like Alain Ducasse and Roger Cuisinier, he hit the road opening restaurants for Interstate Hotels & Resorts before leaving to open the Trump Taj Mahal in 1989. Two years later he joined the Resort, where he oversees a culinary team of more than 150, with 13 on-site kitchens manned by 15 chefs who report directly to him. Today he’s as much CEO as he is chef, and he freely gives credit to the chefs doing the hard, relentless work in all those kitchens. “I surround myself with very, very good, hardworking, dedicated chefs,” he says. “I can only do what I do with a strong team around me.”

You say your job is more head of a multimillion-dollar business than it is the hands-on work of being a restaurant chef. As executive chef of the Resort, what exactly do you do? A couple of things. One is to make sure the Resort is current from a food perspective, but also to balance that with a business sense, to make sure we’re moving forward and delivering the creativity our guests and members are looking for, while at the same time being good stewards for our ownership. The way I explain it to my team is that we’re sitting on a chessboard, and my role is to look five or six moves down the board. We’re such a large operation that to make changes and get them translated through 158 cooks and 15 chefs in a $70 million-a-year food and beverage operation, it takes time.
“Farm-to-table” dining has gone mainstream. “Fresh, local and seasonal” is the new culinary mantra. how does that play at the Resort? When things are in season we definitely try to [purchase them]. We have a tomato broker who goes into the market and picks them; we
have specialty representatives like that. At SeaGrille [the menu] is purely driven by what’s locally available from the fishmongers. If I can’t get pompano because the weather is poor I’m not going to be serving pompano. I think it’s crazy to bring fish in from up north, all the way from the Mediterranean. A lot of people are responding to cobia, wahoo and triggerfish—great, fresh local fish.
What about growing your own? One of the initiatives this season is to enlarge [the Resort’s] garden. We’re looking to develop it outside the private dining room in Lucca, and we’re looking to do it at 501 East as well. We’ll plant according to the menu; a couple different varieties of small tomatoes, basil, lots of lemon thyme, rosemary. We have a new horticulturalist on the property, Wesley Richards. He’ll sit with the chefs and plan out what’s going to work well in terms of seasonality. He has all the resources to help get everything up and running. And he’ll maintain the garden on a weekly basis.
Another major culinary trend is eating healthier. What’s the Resort doing in that regard? A [new] initiative we have is called Enlightened Lifestyle (see page 86). On every single menu we’re featuring dishes with the EL logo. They’re chef-inspired, robust, current, healthy; we’re trying to back out of the butter and cream but still [offer] great, robust flavors with different spices and herbs, olive oil and vinegars. Five years ago at these afternoon breaks for large corporate groups, we would either bang them up with sugar, sugar, sugar or we caffeinated them. You know what I replaced them with? A break called “I’m Nuts for This Stuff”—about eight different types of warm, sea salt-roasted nuts. They make their own trail mix. The other break we do is with NutriBullets. It’s like half salad bar and half fruit bar. I give [guests] a 22-ounce cup, and they go get their kale, their apples, their honey, whatever, put their carrot juice, coconut water or whatever in it, then bring it over to a separate station with 20 NutriBullets. We pour it in, blend it up, stick a straw in it and give it right back to them. They’re walking around drinking green monster coconut water power drinks—from a three-martini lunch to a guy walking around with kale in his teeth.
so obviously your guests are responding to it.
i think the trend is to robust, big flavors. To a lighter cuisine but much more international with definitely with a healthier twist.
64
mizner’s dream
Absolutely. The demand is there. When we’re writing menus we’re definitely much more conscious of the health aspects of [dishes]. That doesn’t mean it has to be a bland, uninteresting food profile. We just changed Serendipity, trying to put a healthier spin [on the menu]. [For example], every day we’ve got nine fresh salads. And these are ‘cheffy’ salads, not chicken salad and tuna salad. There’s one with three different roasted heirloom carrots. There’s one called the Powerhouse Green Salad, with shaved Brussels sprouts, broccolini, tabouli, roasted tomatoes, wilted kale. It’s the No. 1 selling salad.
What other trends do you see on the horizon? I think the trend is to robust, big flavors. Lighter cuisine but much more international and robust, and definitely with a healthier twist. [For example], Americans were so anti-curry because they’d never experienced great curry. I couldn’t give curry away. Now if I put curry in a roasted cauliflower salad they just gobble it up.

Love stories
Weddings at the resort are a turnkey experience that always leads to happily ever after.
W
hile the marriage of Emma Simpson and David Baer represented a meaningful union of two separate families, it also saw the coming together of two longtime Boca Raton institutions: Baer’s Furniture, which the groom’s family owns, and the Resort, where the union took place, in early May 2014. In seeking a venue, the couple, who initially met through mutual friends in 2011, knew that they wanted a place that would serve as a true getaway for out-of-town guests yet be convenient and comfortable for their South Florida families as well. David and Emma visited half a dozen venues, and the Resort was their final stop.

“We visited the Resort on a day that it was pouring outside, and we fell in love with it, even in the rain!” says Emma, a kindergarten teacher. “David and I both knew, almost immediately, that it would be the perfect place for a wedding. If we loved it on a day that it was pouring, then we’d love it on a bright, shiny, May day!” They weren’t the only ones who loved their choice. During the four-day wedding weekend, every one of their 100-plus out-of-town guests stayed at the Resort, enjoying all the on-site amenities. “They all loved it,” Emma says of their guests. That time together with family and friends was one of David’s favorite parts of the entire experience. “Just spending the time at the Resort with the people we love most in the world [was] unforgettable,” says David, who manages

the Baer’s showroom in Boca Raton, just north of the Resort. “Golfing, poolside with family and friends, and relaxing at the spa, in addition to the wedding events, made the biggest difference to me in the long run.” The couple worked almost exclusively with the Resort’s on-site vendors—including wedding specialist Jillian Stevens and Boca by Design, the on-property event planning and production gurus—to personalize their big day and surrounding events with their unique sense of style. Special touches included a Serendipity ice cream station (David and Emma aren’t cake fans), Dandee Doughnuts for an end-of-reception treat, the use of protea flowers (a South African flower, which served as a nod to one of the couple’s first trips together) and a bourbon bar during the rehearsal dinner. “The flowers were spectacular. Brett Woods from Boca by Design really went above and beyond with the flowers,” Emma says. “Looking back at

A DJ spun tunes while guests enjoyed hours of dancing and a bar serving top-shelf liquor at David’s request. The Pompano Beach residents agree that working with the Resort team was “awesome,” David says. “They were very professional, well prepared and patient. Everything we could have wanted was accounted for, and everything controllable went off perfectly.” Adds Emma: “It was better than both David and I imagined it could be. ver the past 15 years, there has been a marked sea change in modern medicine—shifting from a reactive focus, which treats existing diseases and conditions, to a proactive one, which prevents the formation of diseases in the first place. Research shows that this approach will not only save lives but also save the country billions of dollars in medical costs. That approach is called preventive medicine, and that is the focus of the new Enlightened Lifestyle (EL) program at the Resort, launching late 2014. Spearheaded by Resort president Richard Hayduk, EL is an initiative to improve the health and well-being of members and guests by bringing together the property’s health and wellness services and amenities. From the fitness, golf and tennis centers to the spa, restaurants and Enlightened Lifestyle Medicine, EL’s objective is to help individuals and families optimize their well-being through education and behavioral change. “To address the growing interest in health and wellness, the Resort launched the Enlightened Lifestyle to support members’ and guests’ healthy lifestyle,” says

Jodi Sullivan, senior director of fitness and wellness at the Resort. “Although the definition of ‘wellness’ varies by individual guest and member values, nearly all seek some form of wellness during their stays and as part of their Resort memberships.” That translates to complimentary year-round events and personalized programming such as lectures from renowned specialists on subject matters ranging from women’s health to stress reduction, sports stretching and flexibility clinics, and consultations on setting fitness goals and safe usage of equipment. “EL will have an initial pathway that will determine a members’ baseline, and from there the program will offer various components to improve their lifestyle or help them maintain their healthy lifestyle,” Sullivan says. Some of those components include nutritional counseling; weight loss programs; children’s weight management; consultations to evaluate overall health and well-being; blood tests to evaluate biomarkers, nutrition and inflammation; and genome testing to identify the risk factors for the development of chronic illness. In addition, the program will offer on-site

chiropractic services and expand the Resort’s yoga offerings to include Sunrise, Sunset and Full Moon Yoga and yoga with meditation. Resort guests, even if they’re in town for just one night, will be able to maintain their healthy lifestyle thanks to EL’s a la carte menu of services. For example, through the Spa with Purpose program, a guest with muscle tension could enjoy a purposeful massage treatment targeting areas of concern. The same goes for fitness: Guests can participate in very specific personal training programs for corrective exercise tailored to their needs. EL will also introduce nutritional programs throughout the property, beginning with healthy menu options at the Resort’s restaurants, denoted by special icons for easy ordering. Members and guests can enjoy further nourishment with fresh juices from Boca Raton’s Juiceateria, available at the main fitness center and inside Serendipity. Sullivan, formerly senior director of global fitness for Hilton Worldwide, is charged with developing customized solutions and wellness programming. She channels her background as a competitive figure skater and certified personal trainer, as well as her education and training in areas of corrective exercise and functional training. “Through a collaborative approach ...we’ll bring purposeful healthy solutions to life,” Sullivan says. She’s working alongside Hayduk; Cindi Moreno, director of spa and wellness at the Resort; and Dr. Robert Willix, founder of EL Medicine. Adjacent to the spa, EL Medicine is a new practice designed to pro-
mote a healthy lifestyle and complement the EL initiative. The mission of EL Medicine is to empower patients to become the best versions of themselves. The medical team—including Dr. Willix, a former cardiac surgeon; Dr. Cesar Pellerano, a preventive cardiologist; and Dr. Kenneth Janson, a urologist—gives strategic advice and guidance by merging conventional medicine with integrative and energetic forms of medicine. In 2015, members and guests can look forward to even more wellness events and programming from the EL program, including health-related speakers, cooking demonstrations, golf and tennis clinics, spa events with mini treatments and more. “The ultimate goal is to create an elite wellness program where members and guests can maintain their healthy routine. From food and beverage to fitness, they can get it all at the Resort,” Sullivan says. “It’s one-stop shopping, so to speak.” But that doesn’t mean EL is one size fits all, she says: “It will be customized and tailored to members’ and guests’ needs. The goal is for it to be memorable, easy and personal.”

T
he Boca Raton Resort & Club has long been associated with reveling in vacation luxury, fine dining and sports like golf and tennis. Although the majestic Resort still exudes an aura of timeless elegance, these days it also offers an edgier vibe, a more contemporary translation of the luxury vacation experience. Guests don’t summon the front desk; they text a concierge. People work out and surf and do yoga in the moonlight; people may have dinner by the pool as often as they make reservations at one of the Resort’s sumptuous restaurants. This brave new world in the hospitality industry is driven by younger, affluent families who value experience as much or more than ambience. They are people who want a vacation to rock their worlds—and the Resort management team led by president Richard Hayduk is committed to giving it to them. “When our leadership team came in, we saw this great iconic American luxury resort approaching 90 years of age—but it had really plateaued,” Hayduk says. “It was one of the top luxury meeting destinations in the country, but it needed some level of modernization. When Blackstone purchased the property in December of 2004, it began immediately on the modernization, such as the lobby, the Palm Court [and] bringing in celebrity chef Masahuru Morimoto.” The renovation of the crowded old lobby, with its Mexican tile floors and hand-painted ceiling tiles, was both
controversial and refreshing; what emerged was a reconfigured airy and sleek common space, followed by the complete overhaul of the aging Beach Club, a reorientation of the piazza to maximize its water views, and systematic, year-by-year improvements to rooms and amenities. By 2013, leadership at the Resort also saw a need to ramp up the programming, and surfing was a natural. The property has a dazzling beachfront and the kind of unintimidating East Coast water conditions that allows beginners to learn to surf. The Resort brought in proven instructors, and the surf school was an immediate hit. Still, the team knew they couldn’t rely solely on real-life weather and surf conditions. Moreover, there was room by the Tower Pool to change things up. Enter the thrilling FlowRider attraction, a system that uses special “sheet waves” to offer guests exciting rides— at all different skill levels. Between surfing and the FlowRider, recreation at the Resort assumed a more radical shift, which Hayduk thinks mirrors Boca Raton itself. “It’s part of surfing, which has that rebel rogue thing,” he says. “When you think about it, that’s Boca Raton. Boca is between Palm Beach and Miami, and the city has an edge to it. The Resort as its epicenter fits into that mode. This is not Seinfeld’s parents’ Boca Raton. This is luxury with an edge.” The FlowRider exemplifies that outlaw surfer vibe

perfectly; it was invented by California waterman Tom Lochtefeld in 1988, who says it started in his bathtub a year earlier. “This tub was not just an ordinary Kohler,” he explains. “It was my custom design, with a picture-window view from La Jolla Cove to Black’s Beach. It had a flying swan spigot, two outback shower heads and eight custom Jacuzzi jets with a five-horsepower pump. Not one to just relax in the lap of luxury, I hooked up a series of hoses to those jets and started squirting water up molded plastic sheets. Voila, the FlowRider® Stage One.” Lochtefeld refined the concept using wave tanks at the Scripps Institute in La Jolla, and the first FlowRider opened in Texas in 1991, spreading throughout this country and abroad; it’s now a popular feature on Royal Caribbean cruise ships. The FlowRider generates waves known as “sheet waves” that emulate ocean waves in an enclosed system. Lochtefeld says the experience is not as much like surfing as it is like “skateboarding a half-pipe with water as a medium.” It’s an attraction that appeals to families, which Hayduk says is a growing force in luxury vacation destinations these days. The emphasis on surfing and water sports is only one of the Resort’s innovations when it

rom the outside looking in, Boca Raton might seem all pretty and superficial. Nonsensical, even. After all, we’ve seen those pretty images in the national press. Don’t all Boca women obsess over a good sale at Nordstrom and luncheon centerpieces and Pilates at noon? Don’t the men come home at 9 every night to kiss the kids after they’re asleep, their Gucci suits only slightly rumpled? But those outsiders? They’re so ill-informed. Indeed, we know the real Boca Raton, and that’s to say we know all of Boca’s lovely attributes. Boca Raton is a pretty, friendly place to live, and we mean live. The parks are incredible, the schools are A-rated, and the beaches are to-die-for. In fact, the city had the foresight more than 40 years ago to buy up five miles of beachfront to ensure its coastline would remain pristine and undeveloped. Take that, Palm Beach. (We kid.) In Boca Raton, there’s room for all walks of life, from the charity gang that raises money for every cause known to womankind to the (sometimes pesky) volunteers that cram city commission meetings and keep everyone up on their environmental toes. From fine art to fine restaurants, from playgrounds to powerful industry leaders, from sunshine to shopping, Boca Raton is a city that welcomes its residents—new and old—with open arms and cheerful hearts. “We had some pioneers before us who really laid the groundwork for what Boca would be like today,” says Mayor Susan Haynie, who’s lived in the city for 42 years. “That really set the tone for our beautiful community.” Aw shucks. The secret’s out.

While all the tourism folks in all the beachfront communities across the world might say their beaches are the best, there is something inarguably wonderful about Boca Raton’s oceanfront land. Beaches When we say Boca residents love “beaches,” we don’t mean that sad, sad movie that will leave your makeup all runny. We mean real beaches—as in sand and surf and sun. While all the tourism folks in all the beachfront communities across the world say their beaches are the best, there is something inarguably wonderful about Boca Raton’s oceanfront land. It’s unspoiled. That is, while the rest of South Florida has watched its beachfront give way to restaurants and condos and not-so-nice funky shops, Boca’s shoreline has no such private development. Why? “Back in the 70s, the community saw what was happening to the south of us and created a separate taxing entity,” Mayor Haynie remembers. “They purchased five miles of publicly owned beach, and that’s what we have today.” Indeed, through the years, the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District has bought up 67 more acres so that the parks could extend west

of the dune line—and those purchases led to the creation of Red Reef Park and the city’s oceanfront municipal golf course. (“Fore!” never sounded so good.) Haynie and others who love their fair city consider this early preservation effort one of the keys to Boca’s beauty today. “We have really benefited from some long-term visionaries,” Haynie says. Speaking of visions, the city’s dog park is one of the few places along our coast that welcomes furry family members. “It’s incredibly popular,” the mayor says. And just by showing that you’re a city resident—with a utility bill or a driver’s license or a tax bill—you can rent space at one of these lovely parks and put on the birthday party of your kid’s dreams. Most of the beaches have lifeguards on duty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. While there is a charge for parking, there’s also a way around that. Ride your bicycle—and chain up for free. The city’s inland parks provide lots of amenities, like pavilions, baseball fields, soccer fields, and just plain old green space for relaxing. Yes, under trees.

Boca Raton has been named No. 2 in the country in terms of the best place to start a new company and, for that, you can largely thank the personal computer. Indeed, Boca Raton fancies itself America’s “Silicon Beach,” with a slew of tech outfits sprouting up through the years. And the reason? Many of today’s industry stalwarts were spawned by veterans of IBM, which officially opened a plant in the city in 1970. (Of course, the secret planning sessions with Arvida Corporation about the land began in 1965, even before Interstate 95 was completed all the way through Palm Beach County.) IBM’s choice of Boca Raton for its new headquarters during the tech world’s burgeoning decade of change affected everything about today’s city: education, recreation, politics. And industry. Today, the business park that started with that Arvida land remains a cornerstone in Boca business and industry. Beckoned by warm weather, beautiful beaches, good schools and the welcoming attitude of local business and Chamber of Commerce leaders, Boca Raton’s top 12 employers account for a work force of more than 20,000. The top companies? Florida Atlantic University. Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The Boca Raton Resort & Club. The City of Boca Raton. NCCI. The Continental Group. IBM (still). Applied Card System. GEO Group. Lynn University. Lexis/Nexis. And just this past December, Office Depot Inc. chose Boca Raton as its global headquarters, a decision announced after the company merged with OfficeMax.

“Both Florida and Illinois have many positive attributes,” said chairman and CEO Roland Smith, when announcing the company would leave Naperville, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. “But our analysis concluded that Boca Raton provides the best platform for us to achieve planned synergies, leverage assets to drive improved profitability, and launch a compelling vision for the future.” We couldn’t agree more.
shoppIng, dInIng, etcetera They go hand in hand, right? You catch a bite to eat—something fresh and different and yummy—then do some window-shopping in a place like no other. And that’s why so many visitors and residents love Boca Raton. At the heart of the downtown shopping and restaurant district is Mizner Park, the Mediterranean-style outdoor center that was built in 1991—right over the site of the city’s former star: the old Boca Raton Mall. Since then, Mizner Park has grown as the cultural, dining and shopping center for all of South Florida. The chic central park area—called Plaza Real—is platted between two main roads, with stores and restaurants on the perimeter. Twelve years ago, a new outdoor amphitheater was built, and today this beautiful performance center draws big names, especially at its annual Festival of the Arts Boca. The Boca Raton Museum of Art provides an additional touch of culture, as

does the Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center. Mizner Park has not only brought tourists and locals to the area, but it also draws developers, who love this area’s booming economy. (But first, they have to get past the persnickety city planners who enforce a very strict development code. Hey, even McDonald’s had to change its arches for Boca Raton!) While Mizner Park is the city’s eastern star, the entertainment district extends west to the city’s beloved (and luxurious) Town Center at Boca Raton. Remodeled in 1999, Town Center remains a shining jewel in the city’s repertoire. Indeed, Town Center is quite the attraction—who needs roller coasters to draw them in?—and boasts an international reputation. Just west of I-95 on Glades Road, the mall has 220 specialty stores, including Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Steve Madden, Coach, Williams-Sonoma, Tiffany & Co., Macy’s and Neiman Marcus. And we can’t forget shopping at two other city favorites, Royal Palm Place and the Shops at Boca Center. When it’s time to sit and relax, Boca Raton restaurants are renowned. Whether you want casual, contemporary or a knock-it-out-of-the-park New York strip, this is a city that fills you up and sends you home happy—with lots of cute stuff in your shopping bags.

From the best Montessori preschool programs to renowed private schools like Saint Andrew’s to the relatively new medical college at Florida Atlantic University, Boca boasts five charter schools, 20 public schools—most of them A-rated under the state of Florida’s grading system, which is keenly observed by local parents—nearly two dozen private schools, and five colleges and universities (FAU, Lynn University, Palm Beach State College, Everglades University and Digital Media Arts College). What this means is that south Palm Beach County draws not just commuter college students but also transplanted out-of-towners who work here, live here, study here and play here. Maggie Barszewski, an urban planner who has lived in Boca for 13 years, has two daughters coming up through the public schools. Though middle school is supposed to be the scary time, Barszewski says they were “super impressed” with Boca Middle. “The teachers there were amazing,” she says. “Just amazing.” She’s having a similar love affair this year with Boca Raton Community High School. “Boca High really has its act together,” she says—no small compliment coming from an involved parent. And then, there’s higher education. Since opening in 1964, officials at FAU—the first state university in southeast Florida—have worked to play along with the larger universities, raising admissions standards, increasing

research funding, building new facilities and establishing key partnerships with major research institutions. Lynn University opened in 1962 as a private women’s junior college, and in those early days was called Marymount College. Today, Lynn is a private four-year university that also offers post-graduate studies and draws students from across the globe. Lynn’s most recent claim to fame? It hosted the last presidential debate in the 2012 race for the White House. Perhaps no one was more surprised than university president Dr. Kevin M. Ross, who called the decision “not an obvious choice.” But the idea grew on him, pretty darn quickly.
thE EnvironmEntal diffErEncE A lot of city leaders have recently unearthed their environmental consciences, but in Boca Raton living green is old hat. The city passed its sea turtle protection ordinance back in 1986, and has since worked with the Boca Raton Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program in monitoring and counting sea turtle nests along Boca beaches. The specialists also work together to manage construction, vegetation and beach nourishment. The oceanfront lighting program, which controls beach illumination over the summer nesting season, has served as a prototype for other beach communities. And Boca’s big businesses were some of the first to latch onto the importance of LEED buildings—that is, Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, which is part of a national certification program that recognizes bestin-class environmental construction and practices. (Today, Boca has dozens

of LEED buildings.) Recycling has been hip for decades in Boca Raton, and the number of businesses with workplace recycling programs is well above the national average. And the practice of taking wastewater, cleaning it up, then piping it back to homes and businesses for irrigation-only has been in place since 1997. Golf courses have long used this “reclaimed” water to keep the greens green. But Boca’s In-City Reclamation Irrigation System—or IRIS— allows not just businesses and parks to use reclaimed water; private residences can use it, too. All these things matter, and not just in the causeeffect way. (That is, turn down the lights and watch the loggerhead hatchling numbers go up.) This kind of community sensibility draws people who appreciate Boca’s environmental beliefs, says resident Monica Mayotte, chairman of the Boca Raton Green Living Advisory Board. Comprised of all volunteers, the Green Living board works with city officials to keep environmental decisions at the top of the to-do list. “I got involved after I saw ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ in 2006,” Mayotte says. In 2010, the committee came up with a list of “81 different things” the city could do to get greener, everything from composting to landscaping to energy and water conservation. Then they kept showing up at City Hall. “We didn’t

want the report just sitting on some shelf,” she says. Today, the volunteer board is working with students at FAU to set up a program that would certify neighborhoods “green” when residents meet certain environmental criteria. Says Mayotte: “How cool would that be to see all those green dots on a map?” Cool? Heck yeah. If you’re a green geek. { Bee Gees } u These multi-platinum recording artists (who could be seen every Sunday back in the day having breakfast at Jimmy’s East Side Diner in downtown Miami) recorded several of their hits at Miami’s Criteria Studios. Brian wanted to photograph them in their Miami Beach mansions with all their gold and platinum albums on display, but found out that these unassuming Brits did not have such a display—so he re-created the gold record walls with 100 spray-painted LPs bought at a local record store.

SouTh Florida iconS South Florida has been home for celebrities, sports stars and all kinds of characters for decades. pulitzer prize-winning Miami photographer Brian Smith shares some of his favorite celebrity shots—and how he got them.
{ dwyane wade } p The Miami Heat All-Star guard since 2003 and three-time NBA champion was photographed on the eve of the 2006 NBA Finals. Wade, who showed up for the shoot undeterred by a 103-degree fever, revealed his champion’s persona when Brian handed him a gold-painted basketball and told him to picture it as “the gold ball at the top of the NBA championship trophy.” Two weeks later, Wade was hoisting an NBA championship trophy with the gold basketball on top. Any correlation between these two events? Brian would like to think so.

{ Dave Barry } q Brian photographed Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Miami Herald columnist Dave Barry, who has humorously quipped that dysfunctional South Florida deserves to be disowned by the rest of the nation, for a promo for a TV series based on Dave’s columnist persona. Inspired by the joke “What’s black-and-white and red all over?”, Brian created a red set, complete with furniture painted red—which was unfortunately still a little sticky on the day of the shoot, causing a bemused Dave to stick to the chair. It all seemed to be worth it, as Dave, a guitarist in Stephen King’s band the Rock Bottom Remainders, used the picture for his Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs.
{ romero Britto } p Brian caught up with this Brazilian artist—whose art is displayed worldwide from London to Singapore—in his Midtown Miami studio. As Brian arranged the shot from all the art and clutter filling the studio, Romero suggested that he don a green suit to complement his motley art. Thus, Britto’s colorful personality was captured, surrounded by his art and illuminated with a large studio light filtered through silk to mimic light coming through a nonexistent window.
{ leslie NielseN } u Nielsen, the legendary Canadian actor and Fort Lauderdale resident, axed all of Brian’s wacky concepts for his photos, insisting on wearing a tuxedo. So Brian complemented it with a Bond-style martini glass full of sudsy beer. Leslie let his “Airplane”/ “Naked Gun” characters shine through for the shoot, and even to the end, he still has his audience chuckling with the epitaph “Let ’er rip” on his gravestone at Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale.

{ Shaquille O’Neal } q Shaq, the former Heat star who was instrumental in the team’s 2006 NBA championship, was photographed at South Beach’s Delano Hotel using a giant lobby chair as a suitable prop for this 7-foot-plus giant. Screening off the Delano’s lobby for the shoot didn’t dissuade one determined fan, who circled the lobby to sneak in a picture with the NBA champion: It was the actor Jamie Foxx.

{ Gloria & Emilio EstEfan } q This seven-time Grammy-winning Latin powerhouse couple has been friends with Brian since he photographed the Miami Sound Machine for the Miami Herald. He always wanted to photograph them in a 1950s Havana nightclub setting and finally got the chance with an assignment for People en Espanol’s 10th anniversary issue. The look was set using a vintage ’50s wardrobe and props—with a smoke machine and ’50s-style lighting.

{ SylveSter Stallone } p This graduate of the University of Miami’s acting school was photographed at his Coral Gables mansion. Faced with how to capture the scale of the star’s palatial digs, Brian used the simple approach by shooting Sly against velvet drapes, lit with a single light—with the partially visible main staircase in the background to give a hint of the grandness of the place—that highlighted Stallone’s Greco-Roman features and chiseled physique.

Florida native, born in Plantation, Carl is also a Florida Humanities Council Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, and a Miami Herald journalist and columnist since 1976. Brian and Carl are old friends, having worked together at the Herald, so Brian knew Carl hated portraits as much as he loved fishing. Brian and Carl came up with a compromise: Carl would get wet if Brian hurried up and took the picture so Carl could go fishing. Brian added drama to the scene by using Polaroid Type 665 Positive/Negative film, which he manipulated in the process, causing the darkest shadows to “solarize,” or reverse from dark to light (a process invented by surrealist artist and photographer Man Ray). mizner’s dream

{ Gene Hackman } u Islamorada’s famous retiree, who has won two Academy Awards for playing tough characters in his films, proved to be entirely the opposite in person. He was kind and cooperative— and showed up early for the shoot without any entourage. Brian added his own drama by shooting from a low angle with dramatic sunset-type lighting.
{ DonalD Trump } p A prominent figure in Palm Beach society, property developer and casino tycoon Donald Trump was photographed at his Mar-a-Lago mansion. Spotting the mansion’s poolside swan sculptures, Brian had the idea of turning their wings into Donald’s angel wings. Much to the horror of Donald’s “people,” Brian’s stylist wife Fazia discarded the “Donald-approved” dark business suits and found white suits for the photo to match the wings, not knowing how Donald would react. Donald showed up—and, much to their relief—remarked that he had always wanted to do a shoot in a white suit. He liked the look so much that he bought one!

has photographed Venus and Serena on several occasions in their Palm Beach homes, starting when they were just 13- and 14-year-old tennis prodigies destined for stardom. This particular assignment was given to Brian just a few hours before Serena was due to fly to Rome. So, with little time to spare, he flew up the Turnpike, arriving just as the sun was setting. Luckily, Serena jumped into action to help an old friend get the shots that he needed before the light completely disappeared.
Brian Smith, Miami Beach resident, Pulitzer Prize winner and former Miami Herald photographer, is a highly sought-after portrait photographer and lecturer who has seen his images published in many major publications. ASSET & LAWSUIT PROTECTION to Protect Everything You Own From Everyone, Every Time! Lawsuits have become big business, especially since the economic downturn. They’re a cheap way for people to make lots of money, often with an investment of just a few hours’ time. Consider -- the plaintiff may never even have to prove a thing; the prospect of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills can scare a defendant into opting for a settlement without ever putting up a fight. Even if he did nothing wrong. No one’s immune from lawsuits, but people with a lot of assets showing are especially vulnerable. If someone thinks you’ve got a lot to lose – and thus, they’ve got a lot to gain – you become a choice target. People whoare less affluent are vulnerable in a different way: If a person with $100,000 in assets gets sued for $1 million, they’ll be wiped out, whereas the person with $5 million can survive a $1 million lawsuit.

Inventory your wealth. Most people have a lot more than they think. Take stock of valuable domain names, telephone numbers, intellectual property, potential inheritances, and other liquid and non-liquid assets. Convert non-exempt assets into exempt assets. State laws protect some personal assets from lawsuits and creditors. Those assets typically include your primary residence; personal items such as furniture and clothing; pensions and retirement funds; and life insurance. Find out the exemptions for your state and convert non-exempt assets (i.e. cash) into exempt assets (i.e. life insurance). Don’t rely solely on liability insurance. Buy as much insurance as you can; it’s cheap and it helps you sleep at night. But realize that 70 percent of claims are not covered. Your coverage may be inadequate for a particular suit; your insurance company may go bankrupt. Having insurance and an asset protection plan is the belt and suspenders approach to hanging onto your pants. Don’t title your assets solely to your spouse or to “straw men.” They may have more financial problems than you.

Protect your assets with liens. What is a $100,000 car worth if you owe $95,000? What is a $1 million house worth if you owe $950,000? Takeout lines of credit. Record mortgages against your property. Make all of your assets valueless. Become an unattractive candidate for a lawsuit. Transfer your assets to a protective entity. The key to asset protection is to own nothing while controlling everything. Transfer any non-exempt assets out of your name to protective entities such as trusts, LLC’s (limited liability companies), limited partnerships, etc. Utilize International asset protection. Enjoy an even greater degree of privacy and debtor protection with the many additional legal and procedural obstacles that creditors have to face in International jurisdictions. Keep your plan up to date. Laws change every year. Have your plan reviewed yearly.

“FROM CENTRAL PARK TO MIZNER PARK” Senada Adzem at Douglas Elliman in Florida is the trusted advisor to global leaders in business, entertainment and diplomacy, with over $250 Million in real estate sold since 2006. She consistently delivers profit gains for her clients within highly competitive U.S. real estate investment markets. Senada is recognized as a national real estate expert by CNBC, Bloomberg and CNN Money, where she is a frequent guest on national shows including the “Secret Lives of the Super Rich”. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Post, Bloomberg, the Sun Sentinel and many other leading publications also recognize Ms Adzem’s expertise. When handling real estate needs for her discerning clients, Ms. Adzem is dedicated to providing professionalism, knowledge and inherent business sense.
Q: What does it take to be No. 1 at Douglas Elliman in Florida? A: Given the caliber of my colleagues at Douglas Elliman, the #1 company in New York with over $12 billion in annual sales volume and a
tremendous presence in Florida, it takes remarkable performance and relationships to become the top-producing agent in the state. While my record-breaking $24.6 million transaction at St. Regis in Bal Harbour and my $10.4 million penthouse sale at One Thousand Ocean are newsworthy, I handle each property with as much diligence and attention to detail. I also handle a significant amount of off market transactions, particularly for clients who do not want their names in the press.
Q: What are the keys to your success? A: Applying my New York work ethic, standards and client base has been a major key to success in Florida real estate. As VP of Marketing at
Trump International in New York, I moved to Boca Raton in 2006. Donald J. Trump is well known for being the toughest boss in America, and I learned from him not to think “outside of the box” but to “erase the box” and shift the paradigm. What that means to me is that you must be aggressive and market where the money is. Moreover, you must provide tremendous value to clients - be it that you and your team speak 10 different languages and understand how to think ahead on clients’ behalf for tax or estate planning reasons. The support of my team is paramount, as we all have such diverse backgrounds, skills and market knowledge. I serve on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Beach County, the Development Council of the Humane Society of the United States, and was honored with the Award for Outstanding Leadership by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
