INTENTIONS I am an experienced Part 1 Architectural Assistant. I have worked for 9 months in practice at ICA Architects and I am now looking for a new practice to join before I go back complete my masters programme in September 2018. I would like more experience in detail design and construction as well as to continue to hone my skills in feasibility and earlier RIBA work stages. I am interested in communications out side of the office to help me evaluate the performance of documents I produce. I would also like further experience 3D modelling with Revit or ArchiCAD. My primary interests in Architecture are currently in communication and representation of architectural information and the design of dwelling spaces; be that conventional or less so. However, my main concern in this second year of placement is to expand my knowledge of buildings other than hotels.

ARCHITECT URE 6

ICA ARCHITECTS PART 1 ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT

I have enjoyed my first experience of practice; at ICA I have learned a lot about the planning process, producing pre-application documents and Design & Access Statements, aiding in design development and some office management procedures. I also spent some time working within the in office marketing team editing and producing brochures and publications. I worked on a number of projects at ICA including a Moxy hotel in the Spinningfields district in Manchester, a community stadium in East Kilbride, and an Ibis hotel in London. In all my tasks I learned a lot from the other members of staff and was able to make some contributions to the office with my own knowledge as well such as aiding in the switch over to InDesign.

7

INVICTA HOUSE On this project I began by editing elevations in AutoCad and updating the SketchUp model. I made physical development models as well as drawing up files for a high quality context model to aid in the planning application. I had a key role in producing the Design & Access Statement for this project. I was given an exemplar and used this as a template, working closely with the project architects, I put together the document. I conducted site analysis and historic research, I also made diagrams, drafted text and made changes as instructed with each review of the document.

EAST KILBRIDE COMMUNITY STADIUM For this project I made requested design changes to the sketch proposals and updated the existing SketchUp model. We were in dialogue with the client over the treatment of an entry point, I modeled the options that had been discussed to help demonstrate to the client the visual impact of the corner entrances different finish styles. I also produced visualisations of the proposal using SketchUp and Photoshop. I helped prepare the design document, sourcing maps, researching local history and editing location and site plans. I mostly used AutoCAD and Photoshop to fulfil these tasks.

OTHER ACTIVITIES I worked in similar capacities in other projects generally in earlier stages of the design process; putting together D&A, feasilbility and design development documents. I also folded drawing packs and edited AutoCad and SketchUp files. I helped complete a retrospective catalogue of projects to be used for marketing purposes and drafted case studies for publication. I also built development models.

HOMELY: ASA EXPO 17 “

SHORTLISTED COMPETITION ENTRY. EXHIBITED IN BANGKOK MAY 2017

My entry “Vacate to where the Vocation is” to the Homely International Ideas Competition was shortlisted and exhibited at the ASA Expo in Bangkok. The brief for the competition was to communicate a vision of the future of ‘home’. The project was concerned with the rise of freelance workers and how architecture could be used to support this new thriving community of international nomadic professionals who chase their career where ever it takes them. This new lifestyle required an new ‘home’ typology to accommodate the changing needs of this satellite like workforce. The project was informed by research commissioned by the European Union in the ‘Future Working Report: The Rise of Europe’s Independent Professionals’ by Patricia Leighton Professor of European Social Law at IPAG Business.

9

WHAT IS THE ATTRACTION TO FREELANCE WORKING? Freelance professional work for themselves. They proccure their own jobs within other institutions or in collaboration with other freelances and organisations. They self regulate and are autonomous.

THIS LIFESTYLE APPEALS TO THE INTREPID MODERN PROFESSIONAL. However, working independently means that there is little security and no promise of long term work so these workers can be encouraged to chase their jobs where ever they may take them. Within the free movement of Europe this provides huge opportunity for international experiences and a vast jobs market.

THE LABOUR MARKET. A new style of working is growing in popularity in modern Europe. Rejecting the traditional employee employer relationship is picking up speed with professionals choosing to be their own boss and seek work on their own terms with their own unique skill sets.

HOW DOES THIS NEW WORKING PHILOSOPHY EFFECT THE SENSE OF “HOME”? MILLION

This type of work goes by a number of different titles such as:

There is a branch of the Freelance community emerging self identifying as DIGITAL NOMADS. They claim to find home or a workspace where ever they can find an internet connection. This completely frees up their geographic location to explore and be inspired by all the while still working to sustain themseleves. Some stay in their home cities and others travel between jobs. This raises the question of HOME.

STAGE 1: CONNECTIVITY.

STAGE 2: URBAN BOTHY FESTIVAL

Create an app or website that connects the culture of Airbnb and the professional networking of Linked In to provide a new accomodation market for international freelance workers and skill professional tennents for hosts.

Celebrate each cities Freelance workers with a festivals in the city by setting up a temporary village of accomodation and a market square to host training workshops, advertise skills to potential employers and network. “Bothys”could be sponsored by job finding sites, employers of freelances or by individuals. It could be part of a student competition or tourism event.

Build a profile, host in your own city and they’ll host you!

This idea was inspired by the Shabby Shabby Apartments in Munich which were put up for rent on Airbnb as public program summer 2015.

STAGE 3: FLEXIBILITY

STAGE 4: INTEGRATION

An alternative approach to expanding the project would be to look at designing houses with the provision for short term sub letting of secondary space. Areas of flats like studies or storage that can be temporarily locked off at the preference of the user and let out when required.

If the informal hosting method of accommodation takes off and then the platform could begin to develop into a formal proposal outlined in social housing schemes. Designing living complexes with a number of short term let micro apartments for workers to which could be used to generate money to improve the area for the local residents, or for the communal services.

TO PLAY: PAVILION INTIMATE ARTS PAVILION, FESTITVAL OF ARCHITECTURE,GLASGOW. STRATHCLYDE UNIVERSITY Y3 During my 3rd year Undergraduate Thesis I designed a space for the performance of Spoken Word Poetry and Life Drawing for the festival of Architecture in Glasgow 2016. I began looking at what created these spaces where it felt different to other types of performance. I realised it was because of the blurred line between the audience and the performer. The ad hoc nature of the art form and the way in which the tools for participation are possessed by all. The beauty of the open mic and informal roster. During life drawing classes a similar atmoshphere is obtained. The topics the poets can bring to the event can be very raw, stripping themselves orally naked for you to study their words and thoughts. A similar humble air floats around a life drawing class, an appreciation of strength and form of others which you then translate into some meaning to yourself.

TO LIVE: HOUSING URBAN HOUSING, MIXED FAMILY DEVELOPMENT, MERCHANT CITY, GLASGOW. STRATHCLYDE UNIVERSITY Y3 I designed this Urban housing scheme for the Merchant city area in Glasgow in an attempt to address the issues of space standards and family living in the inner city. I tried to imagine an alternative living arrangement that encourages community living and a safe environment for parenting and playing. It was inspired by discovering and analysing the failings of the barren Glasgow Harbour development and cohousing developments in Copenhagen. The block consisted of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom flats all with access to communal break out spaces and multifunctional areas to increase space and usability of access spaces such as landings. The break out spaces were glazed areas between the flats which are accessed by sliding doors. Privacy is maintained between these more public living spaces when required by curtains and blinds. At street level the development is commercial creating a threshold of privacy and safety away from the active city street. The blocks are linked by a shielded aerial garden inspired by the New York Highline. A private garden area for out door play with the safety of supervision from each flat and the community as a whole.

DESIGNING PLACES 1ST PLACE IN SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT STUDENT COMPETITION 2015 8HOUR LIVE STUDIO CROSS DISCIPLINARY TEAM COMPETION AT THE LIGHTHOUSE, GLASGOW. I was a member of the 1 st place winning team at the 2015 Scottish Government designing places student competition. We were a randomly assorted team of architecture, landscape architecture, property management, urban designers and development students who came together to produce the winning masterplan for the Raploch in Stirling. We were briefed on the day and devised a street structure to try and unite divided community. We sought to do this by providing views of local monuments down streets, putting an emphasis on children and the school they share and breaking up historic demarkation lines between the communities by obscuring the visual cues and creating a series of squares with different environments, amenties and services. All teams were given the m2 requirements for each type of space to be placed in the masterplan and distributed it accordingly. I was particularly interested in devising ways of obsucing historic negative symbols in the community while trying to reserve as much of the original structure as possible to try and protect the indigenous communities. All the while trying to balance the need to shake up perceptions in an effort to disipate frictions between the north and south of the town.

MODEL MAKING 28

MODELMAKING FREELANCE MODELMAKER 2014-2017 I have always loved modelmaking since the beginning, and prior, to my architectural education. After an internship with Finch & Fouracre in the summer of 2014 I continued to freelance around my studies and went on to do further freelance work for Abacus Modelmakers as well. Through Abacus I became part of the group of model makers working for studio Nathan Coley building “The Lamp of Sacrifice exhibition in November 2016. I have done private commisions such as a context model for Collective Architecture. Currently in my Architectural Assistant post I make development and context models for the office. I work in wood, plastic and modeling foam/modelboard. I am trained in the use of a variety of tools and workshop machines and I really enjoy my time making, be that in the office with a scalpel or crafting in a workshop.

29

Some models I worked on while I was working for Finch & Fouracre.

30

One of the projects I worked on for Abacus Modelmakers was the prop for the BBC Drama “The Replacement which appears in the opening scene and throughout the short thriller series.

31

“The Lamp of Sacrifice is currently exhibited in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art as part of NOW - Nathan Coley. The exhibition continues until September 2017.

OTHER PROJECTS 34

GRAPHIC DESIGN PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL During my Architectural career so have developed an amateur interst in graphic design through developing my own brand and working with the branding standards of companies I represent. During my time at ICA I worked on developing their marketing and brochure design and helped complete a catalogue of past projects in an accessible and visually effective format. I also designed a series of case studies. These booklets and resources can be seen as part of my physical portfolio.

35

A previous brand I developed for myself last year. It consisted of both digital and paper based media.

MOBILELAND VOLUNTARY PLACEMAKING IN CATHCART. Mobileland was a voluntary student designed and led community engagement program set up in the New Gorbals area of the city outside the iconic Alexander Greek Thompson Church. All members submitted their vision for the project and we worked together to come up with the most effective scheme. We did planting exercises with local school, involved local artists and built furniture. Last summer we planted a field of sunflowers across the site yellowfield featured on STV and Urban Realm. We interacted on weekends with locals, having BBQ’s and playing games. Learning the history of the space from its inhabitants and gathering primary research and feedback to improve our ideas.
