This is a response regarding the article “The false gospel of homosexuality” printed in the religion section of the Southern Accent on February 5, 2015. Comments flooded in as soon as the picture hit Twitter. It was a snapshot of an article titled “The false gospel of homosexuality” in the most recent issue of the Southern Accent. It circulated around different universities and soon hit home to a few large LGBT communities. One LGBT group even posted a powerful paragraph on Facebook stating their discontent, pairing their words with the same snapshot of the article. At the same time, convocation was occurring on campus from President Gordon Bietz on the topic of homosexuality. The hashtag “#SAULGBT” whirled around social media with mixed feelings of anger, confusion and even support. The first thing that people wanted was an immediate apology from the newspaper. The second thing was an explanation of how something like this could ever get in print. The article was written in the religion section of the Accent. It was not written in the news section. There is a green bar at the bottom of the article that states, “The viewpoints on this page do not necessarily reflect those of the Accent, Southern Adventist University, or the Seventhday Adventist church.” The author is the religion editor of the Accent. As such, his rights include writing about religious beliefs, voicing own opinion and encouraging thought for readers. He does not need to state an apology for his article. However, because of the amount of feedback from readers there will be a letter from the editorinchief in next week’s issue. The readers of this article and the Accent are always welcome and encouraged to write, comment and express own opinions. If you choose to respond, we strongly encourage civil dialogue. The Accent has the right to refuse any article written, just like it has the right to publish one. Keep in mind that there is a difference between those who have access to the power of press and those who rise to the occasion and submit the pieces by deadline. Written pieces can be emailed to accent@southern.edu by 5 p.m. EST Monday. If you read this whole thing just now and have no idea what article everyone is talking about, read it here.
