THE MUSIC IN MUSIC THERAPY

Psychodynamic Music Therapy in Europe: Clinical, Theoretical and Research Approaches Edited by Jos De Backer and Julie P. Sutton Foreword by Professor Paul Williams

May 2014 • 368pp • 9781849053532 • pb • £29.99 • $49.95

Bringing together a wide range of European thought on music therapy practice, this book provides a deeper insight into the aspects of the therapeutic process which are enabled by music. With a theoretical, psychodynamic approach and high quality clinical case material from across Europe, the editors stress the role of music within music therapy and show how essential the musician is within the identity of a music therapist. The first of its kind, this comprehensive text is an invaluable resource for experienced music therapists worldwide, alongside students and trainees. ‘The contributors to this book show how it is possible to connect with important, unspoken truths in the lives of individuals, including very severely disturbed individuals, through music, and in so doing render new opportunities for expression of subjugated aspects of the self.’ • from the foreword by Professor Paul Williams ‘The Music in Music Therapy explores music and musical processes as central to music psychotherapeutic practice, primarily through case studies by clinicians from throughout Europe. With a focus on psychodynamic music therapy and the inclusion of cases with a variety of clientele, the book is a welcome addition to the growing literature addressing the role of music in music therapy. In addition to being drawn into the clinical presentations, I am excited and enriched by reading the theoretical material and perspectives on music therapy research that are included.’ •Professor Barbara L. This innovative and comprehensive book demonstrates the effective use of a 2,500-year practice within the framework of expressive arts for health and well-being. Mindfulness has been utilized in the lexicon through other names such as ‘presence’ or ‘attunement’ or ‘flow’ or ‘witnessing’ but here, through historical background, theory and current day mindfulness-practices, the authors gathered take contemporary psychological inquiry to a new wave of application and understanding. I am sure this book will have a great impact and be utilized in the training of practitioners for many years to come.”

Music therapy can be a profound physical, emotional and spiritual support at the end of life. This book looks at a wide variety of cases, explaining how music therapy can be used effectively. It highlights particular components of working with this group, such as creating a therapeutic relationship, helping patients to reach final goals, working within cultural contexts and dealing with difficult emotions, all within the parameters of the musical experience. It also explores the unique needs of people with disabilities or mental illness, and how to support the families of the dying. Therapeutic and philosophical insights related to the dying process are included. END OF LIFE CARE

A Guide for Therapists, Artists and Arts Therapists Nigel Hartley Foreword by Professor Dame Barbara Monroe 2013 • 272pp • 9781849051330 • pb • £25.00 • $39.95

This thoughtful book covers everything from the philosophy behind the practice of working working with people at the end of their lives, to the diverse roles in the multi-disciplinary team, as well as current challenges and opportunities facing end of life care, with an emphasis on how therapy and arts therapies can be integrated effectively. It also looks at palliative care models that address all aspects of a patient’s wellbeing and conveys the latest research and challenges in the field, bridging the gap between theory and the realities of working with patients on a daily basis. Using material from artists and therapists working in the field, the varying demands of inpatient, outpatient and home care are described, as well as the processes of bereavement, how to handle the practicalities of loss and the help that therapists can give at this stage. How artists and therapists with experience of working at the end of life can be involved in other areas of care such as supporting older people in care homes and those living with dementia is also discussed. The book also introduces the important area of health promotion, and how there is a growing responsibility to change people’s attitudes towards death, dying and bereavement. Clear, practical examples are given as to how this might be achieved. ‘Nigel Hartley’s book brushes aside the mystique of music and arts therapy, showing clearly how and why they work. As well as providing a full overview of current practice, he makes positive suggestions for encouraging teamwork and communication, and his highly readable style is shot through with compassion for patients, families and therapists themselves.’

NIGEL HARTLEY is Director of Supportive Care at St. Christopher’s Hospice, London and has worked in end of life care for over twenty years. He is an experienced manager, counsellor, musician, teacher and music therapist. Nigel has chaired both the Association of Professional Music Therapists (UK) and the British Society of Music Therapy and led the organising committee for the 10th World Congress of Music Therapy. Use of the arts in palliative care settings is a powerful and effective way of addressing the practical, psychological, social and spiritual issues faced by service users in end-of-life care. This book uncovers the possibilities for using the creative arts and provides guidance on how to implement arts projects successfully. ‘The book is a brave and sensible move by Hartley and Payne. Brave, in encouraging more “group think” from professions often in conflict regarding issues of funding or professional boundaries. Sensible, because the common ground for these professions, creativity, has so much to offer palliative care: a book of this kind has long been needed’ • British Journal of Music Therapy, Julian O’Kelly, day hospice manager and music therapists at the Princess Alice Hospice, Esher, Surrey, UK

These moments are crucial to the therapeutic process, and there is increasing interest amongst music therapists in understanding how they come about and whether there are ways of initiating them. The contributors to this ground breaking book look at methods of micro process analyses used in a variety of music therapy contexts, both clinical and research-based. They outline their methods, which include using video and audio materials, interviewing, and monitoring the client’s heart rate, and also give examples of the practical application of microanalysis from their clinical experience, including work with clients who have psychiatric illness, autism and other conditions.

Chapters cover AMT in counselling and rehabilitation, with adults and children and with nonverbal clients. A concluding section discusses aspects of the training of music therapy students. Written by experienced and highly regarded analytic music therapists, and edited by Johannes Th. Eschen, one of the first ever AMT students, this book will be of interest to practitioners in many branches of music therapy and related disciplines.

The stories and reflections in this book describe powerful encounters between nine music therapists and their clients. These clients include four-year-old Giorgios, who is terminally ill; Wendy, a passionate, battered child who has been rejected by her mother; Olive, suffering from senile dementia; Martha, whose successful life is in crisis; and Steve, who is living with HIV/AIDS. Through music therapy the clients - and therapists - discover their creativity, and, in the process, come to terms with suffering. The stories reveal the passion and integrity of nine music therapists who themselves undergo profound changes as a result of their work.

CONSTRUCTING MUSICAL HEALING

2000 • 304pp • 9781853024832 • pb • £27.99 • $44.95

Drawing on literature from philosophy, anthropology, psy chology and musicology, BoyceTillman looks at musical traditions and notions of healing in different societies. Her work includes a number of case studies in various cultures - spirit possession cults in Africa and shamans in various traditions. It explores contemporary musical practice in the New Age including neo-shamanism and notions of musical healing in Western musical aesthetics. The use of music in Western medicine is also studied, as Boyce-Tillman draws together a theory of what actually occurs when music is associated with therapeutic intention and examines the role of music within healthcare, education and the community.

By drawing extensively from current literature on music and developmental psychology, music therapy, psychotherapy and music theory, this book encourages music.
