Stimming Rose Stimming is an action or a noise that you repeat over and over again when you are excited, worried or angry. This could be jumping up and down, making lots of random noises, clapping your hands, flapping your arms, chewing things, kicking your legs, biting your nails, biting your lip, fiddling with your hair, repeating phrases from the TV, saying the same word over and over again, rocking backwards and forwards, bouncing, picking, watching the same bit of a TV show over and over again, opening of your mouth into unusual poses, standing on your head, talking in accents or a baby voice and many, many more. 30 You shouldn’t worry about stimming; you should just do it! (Although you may want to explain to your friends what it’s all about!) Stimming makes me feel zoned out of the world and I can only think of the thing I am happy about – it blocks anything else out. If I’m stimming because I’m not feeling good, like if I’m nervous, then flapping my hands or fiddling with something distracts me from the bad feelings and blocks them out.

When

DIFFERENT ISN’T WRONG

You might have heard people say things like, ‘Autistic people don’t have social skills or empathy.’ That just means they don’t know much about autism! These things are not something autistic people do ‘wrong’; they are things that autistic people do differently. The idea of autistic people

That isn’t the way emotions work for most people. For most of us, emotions are a bit like a rollercoaster. They might be ‘up’ (happy or excited) one day and ‘down’ (sad or frustrated) the next day. Emotions can change quickly. And for autistic people (like us) – and autistic meerkats like Min! – emotions can be scary and confusing as often we can’t pinpoint which emotion is happening and why. What does your comfort zone feel like? What are you doing when you are in your comfort zone? Tanya would be knitting and listening to an audio book or watching a show using noise-cancelling headphones. Or she might be building something from Lego – Star Wars Lego is her favourite. Yenn would be writing a book or a blog post, listening to music or talking to an audience about autism. If Min was in their comfort zone, they would be making some art or building something, probably listening to music on headphones while they did it. What s the comfort Zone? 17 ACTIVITY: Your comfort zone List, below or on a piece of paper, three things/ activities that help you to be in your comfort zone. 25  Chapter 2  Is There Anything ‘Wrong’ with Me? No, there isn’t. Some people think autism is a problem or a negative thing. They might say things about how autism is a bad thing and autistic people are ‘wrong’ or ‘broken’. Sometimes adults might think that it’s sad to have an autistic child. This just makes autistic kids feel bad about being themselves and doesn’t help anyone, including parents. When people say things like this, it can be very hurtful for autistic kids (and adults). Yenn remembers when they were young, everyone thought there was something ‘wrong’ with them and tried lots of ways to ‘fix’ Yenn. In fact, Yenn was not ‘broken’ – they mostly just needed some understanding and kindness. THE AWESOME AUTISTIC GUIDE TO BEING PROUD 26 WHY DO SOME PEOPLE THINK THIS? So where does this idea that autistic kids – and adults – are ‘broken’ or ‘wrong’ come from? That is quite a complicated question but a lot of it comes from autism being seen by some people as a ‘disorder’. Do you feel ‘disordered’? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t, but it is usually the case that autistic kids and adults do a lot better when they are supported, heard and understood. As we saw in the last chapter, autism does not need to be a problem; it just means we are a bit different.

THE AUTISTIC GUIDE TO ADVENTURE Sensory Expectations Sensory seekers, this one is for you! Riding a BMX stimulates your vestibular system (the one responsible for balance) through its changes of direction and speed. Your body will experience resistance and impact through the handling of the bike, especially for freestylers. A BMX bike is designed specifically so that it is light enough to manoeuvre on or around almost anything! The thick wheels exist to offer some cushioning against impact, whilst the handlebars are designed to be easy to spin (often without brakes, to enable the full 360 degrees). Getting Started! You can choose to buy the kit that you need for this sport new or second hand, whether that be online or at a local cycling shop. Maybe one of your friends or relatives already has a BMX bike that you could ask to borrow and try out for yourself! In addition to BMX gloves: woven fabric with foam palm reinforcement, insulated lining and elasticated cuffs BMX helmet: plastic shell with foam padding Protective pads: elastic and Velcro straps, plastic shell and foam padding BmX 29 the actual bike, you should wear a helmet and a set of protective pads to keep you safe. To get started with learning, you have a number of options. Have a go and figure it out along the way; ask an experienced friend or relative to teach you; watch some video tutorials online; or, head down to your local skate park and ask the friendly neighbourhood kid to show you what they know. One top tip before you ride anywhere is, if your BMX bike doesn’t have brakes, you will have to use the sole of your shoe pressed against the back tyre to slow down and/or stop. Support Recommendations If you decide to pursue freestyle BMX, it’s worth thinking about how you would feel spending time at a skate park where there are likely to be lots of other riders. If socializing is not your thing, consider planning your practice sessions for quieter times in the day or giving racing another chance (as this generally doesn’t involve quite as much social interaction). If being a freestyler at the skate park is the route for you, keep in mind that wooden ramps and obstacles absorb more of your impact whilst performing tricks than their concrete counterparts. Always respect your own sensory limits: if you begin to feel like you’re not having fun anymore, it’s okay to go home and come back another time. Where in the World? In the Colombian rainforest of South America, on the outskirts of the city of Buga, you can find a house with a difference. It is where BMX freestylers and identical twins Queensaray and Lizsurley Villegas live with their parents. What makes their house so special is that on its roof is a foam-filled pit built from old tyres, mattresses and scrap pieces of wood. When the twins first started their BMX Longlisted for the BookAmazing Awards The Autistic Guide to Adventure Active Pursuits from Archery to Wild Swimming for Tweens and Teens Allie Mason Illustrated by Ella Willis From 8 years to 14 years mA r 2023 | £14.99 | 176pp | pb | 50 b & w I llustr At I o N s AN d photos | I sb N-9781839972171 With lots of space to doodle # The #Actually Autistic Guide to Building Independence Jennifer Brunton Ph.D. and Jenna Gensic M.A. A Handbook for TEENS , YOUNG ADULTS and Those Who Care About Them

Hello, my name is Zane and I have ADHD.

I love to move about all the time as it helps me think. You should see me. I am always fidgeting or tapping or sometimes humming. I am hyperactive as I keep moving, moving, moving.

Soli Lazarus

It makes some grown-ups really irritated and annoyed. If I am told to keep still, it makes me sad and angry. I try very hard to keep still and quiet, but my body works best when I am moving – so I need to have movement breaks. I like doing ten star jumps and afterwards I can focus and concentrate better.

I enjoy jumping on a trampoline, riding my bike and I love to continually bounce a ball. I have so much energy. I take risks, so I often fall over and may hurt myself. It’s okay, as so far, I haven’t hurt myself too bad.

Another interesting thing is what’s going on in the amygdala The amygdala in an ADHD brain is often in a heightened state of fight or flight This means you may be extremely alert and distracted by things in the environment a lot of the time. This would be great if you lived in prehistoric times. You would be alert and would notice the sabre-toothed tiger approaching and you would be ready. warning signs from the amygdala Ha,younever gotme!
We know that medication, exercise, diet and sleep can help these pesky neurotransmitters to fire more consistently.

Gender Identities Crossword Wow! feel like we learned loads from this chapter. Certainly I think it might take time for all of the terms to become second nature. So thought a crossword might be a great way to try out the things you have just learned. Use the descriptions below to figure out which term or word fits. It’s okay if you need to flip back over the last few pages to help you answer them – you’re still learning! Have fun… T U T R C G A R Across 4. Non-binary is not fixed and has no… 6. People who are without gender can identify as… 34 Gender Chapter 3 Pronouns Aren’t People 35 All Is Not What You See! One element that can make misgendering an issue is ‘passing’. Passing is a term we use when someone appears to belong to a social group that they actually don’t. This can be used to describe race, gender, sexuality and disability In terms of gender and pronouns, passing means that someone assumes a person’s gender purely based on the way they look. This means they could very easily misgender someone. Human brains are very complex, but also at their core they are very simple indeed. We truly believe that seeing is believing – how could our brains ever lie to us? Our brains can see a person, hear them tell us their pronouns, and their gender identity, and still refer to them incorrectly. It may feel very hard, and your brain may have very strong feelings about this. Regardless of how someone looks, we always have to respect the pronouns the person uses. The easiest thing to remember is that everyone is unique. We should treat everyone with respect. This means that what someone says is more valid than how we think they look. Remember this the next time you see it happening, or if your brain tries to trick you! Role Model: Indya Moore (they/she) Indya Moore is an incredible person. They are an actor and model. They are best known for playing Angel in a TV show called Pose. Indya is transgender and non-binary and uses they/she pronouns. They have created so much visibility for our com- munity by working with fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, and have even attended the Met Gala in New York. They are not always comfortable being called a role model. They told Dazed that: I’m honoured to be that for other people, but 43 PronounS aren’t PeoPle COVER COMING SOON
