Professional career development HANDBOOK FOR PRACTICE LEARNING IN SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL CARE THIRD EDITION Knowledge and Theory

EDITED BY JOYCE LISHMAN

THE SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR NEWLY QUALIFIED SOCIAL WORKERS SECOND EDITION Hitting the Ground Running HELEN DONNELLAN AND GORDON JACK

Aug 2015 • 496pp • pb • £24.99 • $49.95 9781849055710 • eBook-9781784500108

Nov 2014 • 248pp • pb • £18.99 • $34.95 9781849055338 • eBook-9780857009555

Comprehensive and fully updated, this is the classic companion to practice learning in social work and social care summarising theory, knowledge, research and evidence.

This book gives social workers everything they need to know to succeed in the workplace as they move from student to newly qualified worker. Easy to read and practical it tackles the key challenges they are likely to face.

This book, as with the previous edition, represents excellent value for students from the beginning of their social work education through to their assessed year in employment. Given the range of core and specialist topics covered, students will find chapters that are relevant whatever practice context they find themselves in while on placement, as well as across their taught social work curriculum. It will equip students to engage in critically reflective learning and evidence informed practice. The writing style is consistently accessible and strikes a balance between clarity of explanation and depth of analysis. By signposting students to the most relevant further reading it manages to achieve both breadth and depth in one accessible volume, combining brevity with thorough coverage of the topics. - Mandi MacDonald, Lecturer in Social Work, School of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work, Queens University Belfast JOYCE LISHMAN is Emeritus Professor of Social Work at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, UK. She is joint Editor of Social Work: An Introduction, published by Sage. Joyce has written extensively on social work and practice learning and evaluation as well as having been the General Editor of the Research Highlights in Social Work series, published by JKP, for many years.

LEADING GOOD CARE

This is definitely a book that does what it says on the tin and more! I have to take my hat off to its authors as it is no mean feat to cover all the variations that exist in regulations, guidance and standards for newly qualified social workers across the UK. What I like about this publication is that it explains to NQSWs what they are likely to be experiencing and so would be well worth using contemporaneously as it provides some invaluable pointers about how to take control of their destiny rather than just being swept along by the momentum. Finally, transition is a core thread of this book which is vital in explaining the journey. I would therefore recommend this as an essential companion for both students and NQSWs as it will help to put them firmly in the ‘driving seat’. - Nushra Mansuri, Professional Officer (England), British Association of Social Workers (BASW) HELEN DONNELLAN is Research Project Development Manager at the University of Plymouth. GORDON JACK has more than 30 years’ experience in social work practice, education and research with children and families, and is currently Professor of Social Work at Northumbria University.

The Task, Heart and Art of Managing Social Care FOREWORD BY DEBBIE SORKIN

Written for the hard-pressed manager of social care, Leading Good Care cuts through the obstructions of red tape and procedures to focus on task, role and practice. Managers will discover in this book understanding, inspiration, confidence and the authority to lead their service.

This book wants reading for several reasons. It is a book from the heart and highly readable. It identifies straightforwardly, matter-of-factly and scathingly the mindless, blinkered and harmful bureaucracy which has infected and distorted the social and health care system. Yet, in the face of these identified evils, it cleaves to optimism and independence of thought throughout and a determination that things can, and must, change. It discusses systems and ideas, but is written by an author with a detailed practical knowledge of care and who uses, throughout the book, care settings to illustrate in depth the issues as played out in the real world. Above all, this book challenges managers to break out of the vicious circle within which they can all too easily become enmired and ultimately, to lead good care. - Michael Mandelstam, author of How We Treat the Sick: Neglect and Abuse in our Health Services

Sept 2015 • 376pp • pb • £27.99 • $45.00 9781849055857 • eBook-9781784501457

Full of innovative techniques for carrying out social work research, this book will help students, practitioners and academics engaged in research to understand and apply creative methods. With extended case studies of research projects, it reveals effective strategies for undertaking original social work research at all levels. A valuable reference to help practising researchers not only to understand but also to apply innovative approaches to social work research. Featuring extended case studies of actual research projects, the book provides an overview of a number of central features and qualities of social work research. It incorporates both distinctive methodological features, such as approaches to participatory inquiry, and provides accounts of researcher strategies to address particular challenges, such as carrying out studies with hard to reach populations. This book combines important methodological insights with pragmatic guidance on commonly experienced problems and how these challenges can be overcome. This is a key resource for social work and social care students, social work practitioners and academics engaged in research.

JOHN BURTON has worked in social care since 1965 as a practitioner at all levels, and as a manager, writer, trainer, researcher, inspector and consultant. He has campaigned to raise standards of care and has made such campaigning practical by leading the transformation of several care homes and of a voluntary organisation running homes. He is currently a member of the steering group based at the National Skills Academy (Social Care) for advancing the professional status and practice of Registered Managers.

NEW RELATIONSHIP-BASED RESEARCH IN SOCIAL WORK Understanding Practice Research EDITED BY GILLIAN RUCH AND ILSE JULKUNEN FOREWORD BY IRWIN EPSTEIN

Mar 2016 • 256pp • pb • £29.99 • $60.00 9781849054577 • eBook-9781784501129

Relationship-based research is founded on the idea that human relationships are of paramount importance and should be central to social work research and practice. Drawing on psychodynamic and systemic understandings of research and practice, this book offers practitioners and academics an insight into what constitutes relationship-based approaches to research. These ideas are brought to life by illustrative case studies of research projects carried out in England and Finland, where the concept originated. The authors clearly demonstrate how this approach can be applied across the social work sector and provide a model for practice. This will be a key reference for social work students, practitioners on post-qualifying courses, research students, and consultant and senior practitioner social workers promoting research-informed practice.

This practical resource provides professionals with techniques for developing a more balanced lifestyle. The author discusses the meaning of whole life balance and explains how it can be achieved in reality with some simple, straightforward strategies.

In this brilliantly written book, Dr Clouston presents a thought-provoking reconceptualization of the notion of occupational balance. She argues that living a balanced life means resisting the neoliberal capitalistic pressure to value “doing” over other aspects of life, and instead pursuing personally meaningful occupations that enable “doing, being, becoming, and belonging”. This is a must-read textbook for anyone who is interested in ideas about meaningful living through focused engagement in valued occupations. - Moses N. Ikiugu, PhD, OTR/L, Professor and Director of Research, Occupational Therapy, University of South Dakota

Professional career development: Supervision

NEW CRITICAL SUPERVISION FOR THE HUMAN SERVICES

A Social Model to Promote Learning and Value-Based Practice CAROLYN NOBLE, MEL GRAY & LOU JOHNSTON Apr 2016 • 240pp • pb • £22.99 • $37.95 9781849055895 • eBook-9781784500436

Practitioners in the helping professions today operate in challenging settings where budgets have been cut dramatically, and progression and success are too often defined primarily by key performance indicators and strategic outcomes. Tensions arise when such pressures conflict with helping professionals' core responsibilities to provide excellent care, advocate for patients or service users and to seek social justice. This book introduces a critical model for supervision which addresses not only the human relationships and interactions involved in work, but also the financial, political and managerial environment in which the work is carried out. It identifies how reflective practice alone is not enough to bring about transformational change, and outlines how practitioners can learn in and through supervision, drawing on ideas from critical pedagogy and organisational learning. Practice examples are included to demonstrate the use of this approach within contemporary human service environments. Providing a new approach for effective supervision, this book will be of interest to practitioners, managers, researchers, academics and students working across the human services, including health care, social services and criminal justice.

BEST PRACTICE IN PROFESSIONAL SUPERVISION A Guide for the Helping Professions ALLYSON DAVYS AND LIZ BEDDOE June 2010 • 256pp • pb • £19.99 • $34.95 9781843109952 • eBook-9780857003843

Viewing supervision as a place for learning, this guide considers how supervision can assist practitioners to develop professional resilience and manage the stresses of complex work environments. It also includes specific chapters on supervision of clinical student placements and in child protection settings.

Too many highlights really including - “one-page profiles”, “personalisation” and “person centred practices” because they have resonance across all spheres of Nursing. They make you sit up, think and reflect on your own work. - Nursing Times people with intellectual disabilities, dementia and mental health issues.

Each of the practices is designed to support the individual and put what is important to and for the person at the forefront of their care. Each practice has been tailored so that older people can express more easily what does and does not work for them. 'What's happening to me?' Successful translator and linguist Helga Rohra was understandably good with words - that is, until she found herself getting in a muddle when she spoke. She started to forget the way home, even though she could remember her address. Her confusing symptoms increased and Helga was diagnosed with dementia at age 50 - but she hasn't let herself be labelled with the usual stereotypes. With entertaining vim Helga shows that her life is still as abundant and self-determined as ever, dismantling the negative stereotypes that often surround a dementia diagnosis. She speaks frankly and with humour about her diagnosis and life with young onset Lewy Body Dementia. She explains the changes in her everyday life and the challenges she faces, and shares practical tips that prove it is possible to live well with dementia. Helga also talks about her activism work, which has made hers one of the key voices internationally in dementia advocacy.

Helga writes of the trauma of diagnosis, and seeking support. Yet her fighting spirit meant she became a great advocate for living positively with dementia. This book is a testimony to her amazing resilience, despite her daily battles with this invisible condition. Helga is a true dementia expert! - Christine Bryden, author of Who Will I Be When I Die?, Dancing with Dementia, and Nothing About Us, Without Us!

Introducing life story work, a way for people with dementia to connect with their relatives, carers and the professionals working with them. This evidence-based book explains the many benefits of life story work, with practical guidance for introducing it in a variety of settings. The authors show how life story work can empower people with dementia to inform care practitioners and family members what care and support they may need now and in the future, by taking into account their past and their future wishes and aspirations. The book includes practical information on how to get started, ethical considerations such as consent and confidentiality, and considers issues of diversity and how to address them. The voices of practitioners, researchers and family carers sit alongside those of people living with dementia to present a wide-range of perspectives on life story work.

People from a wide range of backgrounds reflect on their experiences of living with dementia, and what impact the condition has had on their lives. This timely collection offers a much-needed opportunity to hear the voices of people with dementia, as they demystify the condition and break down stigma and stereotypes.

People with Dementia Speak Out is a celebration of people living, loving, learning, changing and growing with dementia. It is a rich and multi-dimensional collection of first-person accounts from people living with dementia. Each story combines people’s reflections on their life stories - which are hugely diverse - woven together with accounts of their growing awareness of difficulties and the impact of dementia on their lives. These stories are about identities and how dementia becomes another aspect of people’s lives - but not the only aspect. This collection has been thoughtfully edited by Lucy Whitman, who usefully shares her reflections on a complex editorial process that succeeds in retaining the diversity of experience, personality and language style that in turn helps to convey the realities - the highs and lows of how dementia is incorporated into people’s lives and identities - and the sheer resilience with which people respond to such major life changes. - Rachael Litherland, Co-director,Innovations in Dementia CIC

Truly inspirational, totally realistic account of living positively with dementia

Insightful and inspiring presentations by the foremost dementia advocate, compiled here for the first time, provide new ways of understanding dementia and better ways to ensure that the voices of people with dementia are heard.

Christine Bryden was a top civil servant and single mother of three children when she was diagnosed with dementia at 46. Since then she has gone on to challenge almost every stereotype by campaigning for self-advocacy, writing articles and speaking at national conferences. This book is a vivid account of the author's experiences of dementia.

You must read Christine Bryden’s book if you have any connection with dementia (and even if you do not, because at some point you will). Christine speaks to us elegantly and forcefully from that other “country” of dementia as one of its leading ambassadors. She humanizes this condition, and takes you along on her journey through this territory. No one can truly say that they “understand” dementia until finishing this stirring and totally candid volume. Do so - today. - Cameron J. Camp, Ph.D., Director of Research, Center for Applied Research in Dementia, Ohio, USA CHRISTINE BRYDEN had a high-powered job in the Department of the Australian Prime Minister and was a single mother of three children when she was diagnosed with dementia in 1995. Since then, she has gone on to challenge almost every stereotype of people with dementia, speaking at national and international conferences and campaigning for selfadvocacy. In 2003, she was the first person with dementia to be elected to the Board of Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI). Christine lives with her husband, Paul, in Brisbane, Australia. She is the author of ‘Dancing with Dementia’ and ‘Who will I be when I die?’, both published by JKP.

FOREWORD BY DR SHIBLEY RAHMAN AND GLENN REES Jan 2016 • 392pp • pb • £13.99 • $24.95 9781849056083 • eBook-9781784500733

Drawing on her own experiences, Kate Swaffer explores the daily challenges faced by those diagnosed with young onset dementia. Challenging the notion of ‘prescribed disengagement’, Kate offers a fresh perspective on how to live beyond dementia, and how family, friends and dementia care professionals can support people post diagnosis.

Before being diagnosed with younger onset dementia, Kate Swaffer loved to study, to learn, to be of service to others. Now living with dementia, she has not changed in these respects whatsoever. Her wonderfully illuminating book should be required reading for people and families living with dementia. - Steven R. Sabat, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Georgetown University, Washington D.C., U.S.A.

A comic about dementia ALEX DEMETRIS Dec 2015 • 32pp • pb • £7.99 • $12.95 9781849057097 • eBook-9780857012500

When Pete started hallucinating clowns in the corner his son knew something wasn’t quite right. Here, Alex Demetris draws on his father’s experience of Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) to shed light on the condition. Exploring both physical and mental changes, this comic shows how LBD symptoms affect people with the condition and their loved ones.

I’m a doctor, and I learnt things from this comic because it is, in fact, an ideal way to learn - the reader is introduced to an individual, a family, rather than a disease or condition. I felt like I had been introduced to Demetris’ family and tagged along on a visit to the nursing home in which ‘Dad’ (Peter) now resides. The author adds enough factual material to inform without overloading or losing the reader. The gentle, ironic humour and gorgeous muted colour scheme make for an enjoyable read, despite the serious subject matter. - Ian Williams, Graphic Medicine

NEW HIDDEN CAMERAS

Everything You Need to Know About Covert Recording, Undercover Cameras and Secret Filming JOE PLOMIN Feb 2016 • 224pp • pb • £12.99 • $19.95 9781849056434 • eBook-9781784501365

The complete and authoritative guide to the use of hidden cameras to expose abuse or wrongdoing. Secret filming is no longer the preserve of specialists, professional journalists and private investigators. Drawing on the author's own experience producing undercover documentaries and wearing secret cameras, this book explains covert recording for the general public, including specific advice on the practicalities of using a phone or covert camera to record evidence. It considers the legal and ethical issues and provides vital information for anyone who may use or encounter secret filming, including the people or organisations that might be filmed, regulators, social workers, local government officials and anyone who may encounter it in court. It also looks to the future of covert filming and the implications of technological advances, such as drone cameras.

In the wrong hands, secret cameras can ruin lives - but they can also prove wrong-doing and do good. BBC Panorama producer Joe Plomin takes the reader through the ethical minefields in this ground-breaking book. - John Sweeney, BBC reporter

NEW WHISTLEBLOWING AND ETHICS IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE ANGIE ASH May 2016 • 176pp • pb • £17.99 • $29.95 9781849056328 • eBook-9781784501082

Those who speak up about poor, corrupt or unethical practice often do so at a great personal cost. This timely book explores our understanding of the ethics of whistleblowing and shows how managers and organisations can support individuals speaking out. While some professional guidelines formalize duties to speak out where there are concerns about poor or harmful practice, workplace cultures often do not encourage or support this, and individuals frequently find themselves victims of a backlash. This book looks at the social, cultural and systemic reasons that make speaking out about poor care so risky. The book looks at the ethics of whistleblowing, and why some people speak out about corrupt or harmful practice, but many do not. It offers a practical framework for creating ethically driven health and social care organizations that support and protect individuals speaking out. Whistleblowing and Ethics in Health and Social Care is essential reading for students, professionals and decision makers across health, social care and criminal justice.

This is a very important and timely publication given all the recent interest in and publicity about whistleblowing in the public sector with a particular focus on health and social care. Ash quite rightly encourages the reader to unpack the various layers that shroud this activity and in my view she has produced a critical analysis that should both provoke debate and be actively referenced in current and future debates. A must read for all health and social care professionals. - Nushra Mansuri, Professional Officer (BASW England)

It delivers clear information for occupational therapists and anyone considering using a weighted blanket to help with sensory processing disorder, autism, sleep disorders, fibromyalgia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and more.

When I was a child, I craved deep pressure and I liked lots of blankets on the bed to help me sleep. When I got older, I built a squeeze machine to apply deep pressure to help calm me. Sensory problems are very variable. A weighted blanket is likely to be most effective for children or adults who seek deep pressure. For children with an autism diagnosis, some individuals will respond well to a weighted blanket and for others it will have little effect. This book contains lots of good practical advice on how to use and make weighted blankets. It will be a great resource for individuals who are calmed by deep pressure. - Temple Grandin, author of The Autistic Brain and Thinking in Pictures

RESTORATIVE THEORY IN PRACTICE

Insights Into What Works and Why BELINDA HOPKINS Oct 2015 • 248pp • pb • £24.99 • $39.95 9781849054683 • eBook-9780857008473

Restorative practice is an innovative approach to thinking about, and addressing, conflict and bullying, as well as disruptive, challenging and criminal behaviour. The approach is increasingly used to transform the culture of organisations, institutions and services and the way people communicate with one another. In this book, ten practitioners describe a restorative encounter as seen through the lens of their own theoretical model. The book's unique structure is modelled on a restorative practice known as Circle Time- comprising of a Check-in, a Main Activity, and a Check-out. In the Check-in the practitioner explains how their own theoretical model informs their practice; in the Main Activity they comment on the same case studies to highlight how each theory can deepen our understanding of what might be happening and why; and in the Check-out they reflect on what they have learned from reading each other's contributions. This is a unique exemplar of how restorative theory and practice can influence how practitioners think, learn and write about restorative practice.

As restorative justice continues to grow, expanding into new contexts and guided by practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds, it is critical that we maintain a solid foundation in the core guiding principles of the field and a strong connection to theories that support the work. Such a focus on restorative justice praxis brings together practice and theory, each informing the other and resulting in action that is guided by critical reflection. Belinda Hopkins contributes to this much-needed praxis by collaborating with ten leaders in the field of restorative justice who share the theories that support their work. This is not just a theory book, however; each of the theories is situated in ongoing work and applied in practical ways. This will definitely be a text I use in my classes. - Katherine Evans, Assistant Professor, Restorative Justice in Education, Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA

Spiritual Experiences in Severe Distress, Illness and Dying DR MONIKA RENZ Conventional coping strategies can be pushed to their limits when people find themselves in situations of suffering, illness, and dying. Moved beyond their everyday consciousness, individuals often have spiritual experiences of grace and encounters with the transcendent or the divine. The author shows how care providers can support patients in their suffering and how they can recognize patients' spiritual experiences. Explaining different types of experiences of transcendence such as seeing angels or feelings of otherness and presence, this book will be of valuable use to professionals working in palliative and spiritual care, such as spiritual caregivers, therapists, nurses, and physicians. The book entails a new approach to spiritual care which opens a space of hope wherein grace may happen even amid pain, suffering, illness and dying.

Decreased libido is a common effect of cancer treatment, but it can be awkward to talk about and it is often brushed under the carpet. Elizabeth Shefrin doesn’t shy away from this most intimate of topics, and in this embroidered comic she shares with gentle humour how her husband’s cancer treatment affected their sex life.

Sharing experiences of living with post-traumatic stress disorder, this documentary-style comic follows two exmilitary personnel. From looking for quick exits in coffee shops to re-experiencing traumatic events without warning, they explain how the illness affects them and discuss coping strategies and treatments.

Sima’s work is at once single-panel comics and yet also meditations on the everyday profound experiences of health and illness. The simplicity of the stitched lines reveal the depth of the moments depicted. Her work both echoes the ancient and gestures to the future. - MK Czerwiec, RN, MA, www.comicnurse.com

TRAUMA IS REALLY STRANGE

STEVE HAINES has been working in healthcare for over 25 years and as a bodyworker since 1998. Understanding the science of trauma and pain has transformed his approach to healing. He has studied Yoga, Shiatsu, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE). He is a UK registered Chiropractor and teaches TRE and Cranial work all over the world.

STEVE HAINES ILLUSTRATED BY SOPHIE STANDING Dec 2015 • 32pp • pb • £7.99 • $12.95 9781848192935 • eBook-9780857012401

Revealing the strange nature of trauma and exploring how trauma resolution involves changing the body’s physiology, this engaging comic explains the science of trauma in easy-to-understand terms. With a positive emphasis on human resilience, it encourages better understanding of trauma and describes some simple Trauma Releasing Exercises. WE LOSE CONNECTION WITH OUR BODY OR PARTS OF OUR BODY. IT IS HARD TO STAY PRESENT AND GROUNDED.

‘I’M SHAKING, IS THIS NORMAL?’

SHAKING AFTER A DRAMATIC EVENT IS OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH FEAR. SHAKING UNCONTROLLABLY FEELS BIZARRE AND TOO MUCH.

WE CAN USE THREE STATEMENTS TO HELP UNDERSTAND WORKING WITH AND OVERCOMING TRAUMA.

1. ‘THERE IS TRAUMA.’ TERRIBLE THINGS HAPPEN TO HUMAN BEINGS.

A USEFUL MODEL IS TO CONSIDER STRESS, PTSD AND DEVELOPMENTAL TRAUMA AS A CONTINUUM.

STRESS

DISSOCIATION CAN BE TERRIFYING, BUT IT CAN ALSO BE VERY HARD TO SPOT. THE CENTRAL FEATURE IS THAT BRAIN IS IN THE HABIT OF NOT FEELING.

DISSOCIATION IS DIFFICULT TO IDENTIFY AS ‘WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WE DON’T KNOW.’ OLD PARTS OF THE BRAIN ARE TRYING TO STOP US SENSING, DISTANCING US FROM THE BODY AND LIMITING OUR PERCEPTION.

LETTING OURSELVES SHAKE CAN BE A VERY POWERFUL TOOL AND CAN BE USED LIKE A SAFETY VALVE TO CLEAR EXCESS ENERGY. WE CAN LEARN TO INTERACT WITH SHAKING, RATHER THAN TRYING TO DAMPEN IT DOWN ALL THE TIME. SHAKING CAN BE UNCOUPLED FROM EMOTIONAL INTENSITY.

2. ‘WE CAN OVERCOME TRAUMA.’

FEEL ME

PTSD

DEVELOPMENTAL TRAUMA

TRAUMA CAN BE A SINGLE EVENT OR A PERIOD OF EVENTS AFTER WHICH WE KNOW WE ARE DIFFERENT: AN ACCIDENT, BEING ATTACKED OR ABUSED, OR A SUDDEN LOSS.

RESTLESS LEGS AND TENSION SHAKES ARE VERY COMMON WHEN WE ARE OVERWHELMED.

3. ‘HEALING TRAUMA IS ABOUT MEETING THE BODY.’ IN TRAUMA, OLD PARTS OF THE BRAIN CHANGE HOW THE BODY WORKS. BY PAYING ATTENTION TO FEELINGS IN THE BODY AND LEARNING TO SELFREGULATE WE CAN REBOOT THE BRAIN.

PTSD EMERGED IN THE EARLY 1980s AS A UNIFYING CONCEPT AFTER INSIGHTS FROM VIETNAM VETERANS AND WOMEN WHO HAD EXPERIENCED SEXUAL VIOLENCE.

WE ARE ‘WIRED TO SURVIVE’. WE WOULD NOT BE HERE AS A HUMAN SPECIES UNLESS WE HAD EVOLVED WAYS OF RECOVERING FROM THAT LION ATTACK (OR SUDDEN LOSS OF A LOVED ONE, OR BEING ABUSED, OR BEING IN AN ACCIDENT…).

SHAKING IS BEST UNDERSTOOD AS A WAY OF EXTINGUISHING FEAR AND DISCHARGING ALL THE ENERGY MOBILIZED FOR FIGHTOR-FLIGHT. PEOPLE CAN RELY ON THINKING AND FUNCTION PRETTY WELL, BUT OFTEN REPORT THEY FEEL CUT OFF, LIKE AN OBSERVER.

(MORE ON THE STRANGENESS OF SHAKING LATER.)

The ‘I’m shaking, is this normal?’ quote is from a young girl after watching her first deer be killed. Her dad does an amazing job of reassuring her and helping her discharge, check YouTube: ‘Savannah’s first deer hunt’.

The amount of people who experience restless leg syndrome (RLS) is surprisingly high: ‘RLS affects 5%–10% of adults in the general population, and is associated with various chronic conditions’ (Li et al 2013).

‘As I learned more about how people manage to withstand extremely aversive events, it became all the more apparent to me that humans are wired to survive. Not every-body manages well, but most of us do’ (Bonanno 2010).

These three statements are drawn from the work of Dr David Berceli, creator of Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE). The body is central to healing, as often ‘there are no words to describe the depth of human experience the trauma survivor has been plunged into’ (Berceli 2008a).

ANY DEFINITION OF TRAUMA NEEDS TO ALLOW FOR ACCUMULATED OVERWHELM, WHICH CAN OCCUR OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. SUSTAINED, EARLY DISTRESS CAN HAVE DEVASTATING CONSEQUENCES.

THE TERM ‘DEVELOPMENTAL TRAUMA’ RECOGNIZES THAT GROWING BRAINS ARE MORE VULNERABLE. EARLY EVENTS LEAVE DEEP IMPRINTS THAT INCREASE THE COMPLEXITY OF HEALING AND FINDING SAFETY.

‘For every soldier who serves in a war zone abroad, there are ten children endangered in their own homes’ and ‘The consequences of caregiver abuse and neglect is vastly more common and more complex than the impact of hurricanes or motor vehicle accidents’ (van der Kolk 2014).

In the space of a short comic book it is hard to do justice to the many terrible things that can overwhelm human beings. Focusing on our resilience and ability to endure is in no way meant to underplay the suffering and complexity of surviving intense fear, helplessness or horror.

PAIN IS REALLY STRANGE STEVE HAINES ILLUSTRATED BY SOPHIE STANDING June 2015 • 32pp • pb • £7.99 • $12.95 9781848192645 • eBook-9780857012128

In this gripping memoir, Claire eloquently recounts her most troubled times and challenges a purely medical understanding of hearing voices.
