A book to help parents support and communicate with their child after diagnosis. Empowering and practical, this guide is the perfect companion for parents who are finding it difficult to tell their children about their autism diagnosis. It provides a realistic yet uplifting approach to autism, treating it not as a disability but as a difference. It advises on how and when to talk to autistic children with both high and low care needs, and provides guidance on supporting children’s relationships with peers at school, as well as how to broach the conversation with the child’s siblings. Concise and easy to read, The Little Book of Autism FAQs answers parents’ questions with accessible language, preparing them to approach this difficult conversation in a constructive manner.

A guide to help children with autism develop the skills for simple conversation. Do you want to help your child on the autism spectrum to verbally communicate with you and others? You’ve picked up the right book. The Autism Language Launcher gives you something totally new: a step-by-step guide that ignites language lift-off by using methods such as tapping into your child’s innate intelligence, going with your child instead of against your child and providing techniques that work with adults on the spectrum. Written for parents, relatives, professionals, educators, or caregivers of a child or adult who is not yet verbal, making some sounds, using some words, speaking in single words, or using two-word phrases, this book uses the author’s decades of experience with children and adults on the spectrum. Kate also demonstrates how to effectively address your child’s echolalia, repetitious language, and repetitive questions in a way that your child will find supportive, bonding, and even joyful.

“Davida Hartman gives parents an honest, nuanced and above all empowering and heart-warming answer to perhaps the most pertinent question they have: Do we tell our child that he/she has autism?” Peter Vermeulen, Autism in Context, Belgium

“Reading this book is like having an in-home consultant - or better, a knowledgeable friend - to cheer you on and guide you along. Wilde uses real life examples and practical bullet points to support and inspire you in helping your child of any age to gain more speech. This is the only resource you’ll need to help your child’s communication grow!” Cindy Rinna, mother of two autistic children

“This is a fantastic book... The strategies discussed are therapeutically sound.” —Youth in Mind

KAY AL-GHANI People often ask what inspired me to write the story of The Red Beast. As with all my books, it is always a child. Many years ago, I worked with a boy, who had Asperger Syndrome. He who would often, without warning, throw himself into a violent rage. The school strategy, in those days, was to use safe handling and remove him to a soft playroom, where he was left to calm down. However, sometimes staff and children would get injured, as they attempted to do this. I thought I’d try a new strategy. One that I had seen used effectively on a frightened bird. Approaching him from the rear, I would quickly wrap him in a weighted blanket and gently lower him to the floor. Then I would start to read his favourite story. He very quickly calmed – as did the rest of the children in the class. Encouraged by my success, I went home and wrote the story of the Red Beast and asked my autistic son, Haitham, if he could draw some pictures to go with it. Two weeks later we had a break through moment when the child looked at me and said: “Red Beast is awake - get my blanket!”

All Birds Have Anxiety KATHY HOOPMAN

Kathy Hoopmann 2017 / £9.99 / hb / 72pp / 6–99

Over the past 20 years, I have had 22 books published, with translations into 18 languages. Over half of those books deal with neurodiversity and mental illness, in fiction and non fiction, for children and adults. My best sellers are definitely my photo books and at a guess, I have looked at over 3 million images in my search for the perfect cat, dog and bird pictures. All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome, All Dogs Have ADHD, Inside Asperger’s Looking Out, and All Birds Have Anxiety are not so much written, as painstakingly and lovingly crafted. Of course, I put just as much care into my fiction books too, and Elemental Island, that I co-wrote with J.S. Kiss, is a place I would definitely like to visit. I was thrilled when two of my books were adapted as graphic novels. Mike Medaglia and Rachael Smith are artistic geniuses in the way they brought Blue Bottle Mystery and Lisa and the Lacemaker alive. But I have to admit that the highlight of my writing career has been when people contact me to say that their lives have been changed for the better because of my books. There is no higher praise for an author! So my writing journey has been full, exciting and very, very rewarding and I hope will continue for much longer yet.

The Spectrum Girl’s Survival Guide

How to Grow Up Awesome and Autistic Siena Castellon Foreword by Temple Grandin Mar 2020 / £12.99 / pb / 256pp / 12–18 years / 10 b/w cartoons / ISBN-9781787751835

SIENA CASTELLON I wrote The Spectrum Girl’s Survival Guide: How To Grow Up Awesome and Autistic to provide young autistic girls with the type of information and guidance that I wish had been available when I was growing up. I found that most of the books in existence were written for autistic boys and by adults who are not autistic. Since autistic girls have very different challenges and pressures than autistic boys, I found these books unhelpful. I have written my survival guide from the perspective of an autistic teen girl and provide relevant insights and advice on a wide range of areas, including navigating the perils of social media, crushes and dating, taking care of your body, finding your fashion style and understanding and managing your emotions. I hope that my book will provide current and future generations of autistic teen girls with helpful tips, tricks, insights, information and guidance that will aid them in navigating their teen years and will help them to realise that they are not alone in their struggles.

The ultimate go-to guide for autistic teenage girls, written by a multi-award-winning and internationally recognised teen autism campaigner. “Never be ashamed of being different: it is this difference that makes you extraordinary and unique.” This essential go-to guide gives you all the advice and tools you’ll need to help you flourish and achieve what you want in life. From the answers to everyday questions such as ‘Am I using appropriate body language?’ and ‘Did I say the wrong thing?’, through to discussing the importance of understanding your emotions, looking after your physical and mental health and coping with anxiety and sensory overloads, award-winning neurodiversity campaigner Siena Castellon uses her own experiences to provide you with the skills to overcome any challenge. With practical tips on friendships, dating, body image, consent and appearance, as well as how to survive school and bullying, The Spectrum Girl’s Survival Guide gives you the power to embrace who you are, reminding you that even during the toughest of teen moments, you are never alone.

“Her work makes it very clear the great things that autistic people are capable of… Siena has helped many people have a positive attitude.” – Temple Grandin, from her foreword to The Spectrum Girl’s Survival Guide

KNOW YOUR SPECTRUM! An Autism Creative Writing Workbook for Teens Know Your Spectrum!

An Autism Creative Writing Workbook for Teens Finn Monahan Jan 2019 / £18.99 / pb / 288pp / 12–18 years / World rights available / ISBN-9781785924354

“Know Your Spectrum! is a much-needed resource: an innovative, insightful and extremely practical guide for young autistic people. Written in a clear and attractive style, and packed with useful information and ideas, it will empower them to embrace their neurology, develop their own strategies and learn how to self-advocate based on their personal spectrum of autism.” —Maura Campbell, Senior Editor and Features Writer, Spectrum Women Magazine

A creative writing workbook that helps autistic teenagers understand their individual experience of autistic behaviours and their own personal strengths and difficulties. Not everyone with autism is the same. This workbook will help teenagers recognise their own individual spectrum of autistic behaviours, and reflect on the specific challenges they face, their own strengths and how they relate to other people. Using creative writing activities, this book helps teenagers to identify connections between events and their emotions - which can be difficult for people with autism - while improving their writing skills through fun activities. A range of examples of poetry and short stories are included to make each activity accessible to all levels and to show how writing narrative and poems can help support personal reflection. The book encourages the reader to explore the core aspects of autism including social communication, executive function, and sensory processing, and then allows the teen to create a template of their own spectrum of abilities within autism. This unique understanding of autism can then be used to develop individual strategies and encourage self-advocacy. Using this book collaboratively with teachers or parents means the teen can be supported in a way that is specific to them.

“Thankfully, we have reached a point where society recognizes that all people, including those with a developmental disorder such as autism, are sexual beings who have a right to knowledge and to be safe. But there are aspects of sexuality that are challenging and not easy to teach. These attractively illustrated books, with their clear, anatomically correct pictures and simple, unambiguous text, deal bravely with these topics and will facilitate discussion and learning. They will be a very welcome addition to the bookshelves of families who have an adolescent boy on the autism spectrum.” —Sarah Attwood, author of Making Sense of Sex

“In very simple, unambiguous text and quite graphic pictures, we see Ellie beginning to grow up and the signs that she notices as she does so - hair in unusual places, spots, enlarging breasts, hips, and periods...while meant for girls on the autistic spectrum, this could be of real use to any young girl facing the challenges of growing up.” —HealthyBooks

A collection of 50+ personal accounts about living and ageing as an autistic adult (including Asperger’s and high functioning autism). This collection of narratives from autistic adults is structured around their decades of experience of life, covering 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60 and 70s+. These are varied and diverse, spanning different continents, genders, sexualities and ethnicities, yet the editor highlights the common themes that unite them and skilfully draws out these threads. Each chapter is based on accounts from one age group and includes accounts from people of that age, giving an insight into the history of autism and signifying how gaining a diagnosis (or not) has changed people’s lives over time. The book is about ageing with an autistic mind, and helping the reader find connections between neurotypical and neurodiverse people by acknowledging the challenges we all face in our past, present and futures.

Twelve couples share their experiences including the challenges and benefits autism can bring to a relationship. Comprised of the accounts of twelve heterosexual couples in which the man is on the Autism Spectrum, this book invites both partners to discuss their own perspectives of different key issues, including anxiety, empathy, employment and socialising. Autism expert Tony Attwood contributes a commentary and a question and answer section for each of the twelve accounts. The first book of its kind to provide perspectives from both sides of a relationship on a variety of different topics, Neurodiverse Relationships is the perfect companion for couples in neurodiverse relationships who are trying to understand one another better.

“Too often, we forget that roughly 75% of Autistic people are adults. How to support neurodivergent employees, customers and clients in the workplace. Estimates suggest that up to 20% of employees, customers and clients might have a neurodivergent condition - such as dyslexia, autism, Asperger’s, ADHD or dyspraxia - yet these individuals often struggle to gain and maintain employment, despite being very capable. This practical, authoritative business guide will help managers and employers support neurodiverse staff, and gives advice on how to ensure workplaces are neuro-friendly. The book demonstrates that neurodiversity is a natural aspect of human variation to be expected and accepted, rather than a deficit to be accommodated.

Provides strategies for promoting positive wellbeing and good mental health in autistic adults. Breaking away from neurotypical ideals of happiness, this book offers simple techniques and exercises to help adults on the spectrum combat negative thoughts and improve their mental health. Practical and engaging, it tackles communication skills, self-awareness, workplace coping strategies and more, with a refreshing positive psychology approach.

“Exploring autism and happiness is not new, however, this book dissolves the mystery - not imposing a neurotypical view of happiness on autistic individuals is key. Positive psychology uncovers individual autistic dispositions, emphasises strengths and connection to meaning, facilitating happiness that builds into secure and content wellbeing.” —Dr. Wenn B. Innovative guide to rethinking autism and autistic learners in inclusive school settings. This book presents original, empirical research that reframes how educators should consider autism and educational inclusion. Rebecca Wood carefully unpicks common misapprehensions about autism and how autistic children learn, and reconsiders what inclusion can and should mean for autistic learners. Drawing on research and interwoven with comments from autistic child and adult contributors throughout, the book argues that inclusion will only work if the ways in which autistic children think, learn, communicate and exhibit their understanding are valued and supported. Such an approach will benefit both the learner and the whole classroom. Considering topics such as the sensory environment, support, learning and cognition, school curriculums, communication and socialisation, this much needed book offers ideas and insight that reflect the practical side of day-to-day teaching and learning, and shows how thinking differently about autism and inclusion will equip teachers to effectively improve teaching conditions for the whole school.

“Rebecca Wood has opened the door for any teacher who wants to do better for autistic pupils. I urge all educators to embrace the key messages in this book, your pupils and their parents will thank you for it.” —Charlene Tait, Deputy Chief Executive, Scottish Autism

*Gold Medal Winner in the Sexuality/Relationships Category of the 2011 IPPY Awards* *Honorary Mention in the 2010 BOTYA Awards Women’s Issues Category* Girls with Asperger’s Syndrome are less frequently diagnosed than boys, and even once symptoms have been recognised, help is often not readily available. The image of coping well presented by AS females of any age can often mask difficulties, deficits, challenges, and loneliness. This is a must-have handbook written by an Aspergirl for Aspergirls, young and old. Rudy Simone guides you through every aspect of both personal and professional life, from early recollections of blame, guilt, and savant skills, to friendships, romance and marriage. Employment, career, rituals and routines are also covered, along with depression, meltdowns and being misunderstood. Including the reflections of over thirty-five women diagnosed as on the spectrum, as well as some partners and parents, Rudy identifies recurring struggles and areas where Aspergirls need validation, information and advice. As they recount their stories, anecdotes, and wisdom, she highlights how differences between males and females on the spectrum are mostly a matter of perception, rejecting negative views of Aspergirls and empowering them to lead happy and fulfilled lives.

A unique look at women and girls with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The difference that being female makes to the diagnosis, life and experiences of a person with an ASD has largely gone unresearched and unreported until recently. In this book Sarah Hendrickx has collected both academic research and personal stories about girls and women on the autism spectrum to present a picture of their feelings, thoughts and experiences at each life stage. Outlining how autism presents differently and can hide itself in females and what the likely impact will be for them throughout their lifespan, the book looks at how females with ASD experience diagnosis, childhood, education, adolescence, friendships, sexuality, employment, pregnancy and parenting, and aging. It will provide invaluable guidance for the professionals who support these girls and women and it will offer women with autism a guiding light in interpreting and understanding their own life experiences through the experiences of others.

“This book adds to our knowledge by providing an insightful, sensitive analysis of the pattern of behaviours in females from childhood through to old age... This book endorses my clinical experiences in working with females in the autism spectrum and validates the importance of diagnosis at any time in a person’s life.” —Dr Judith Gould, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Director of The Lorna Wing Centre for Autism

A candid, first of its kind insight into growing up as a gay trans woman with autism, undiagnosed until adulthood. “So while the assumption when I was born was that I was or would grow up to be a neurotypical heterosexual boy, that whole idea didn’t really pan out long term.” In this candid, first-of-its-kind memoir, Laura Kate Dale recounts what life is like growing up as a gay trans woman on the autism spectrum. From struggling with sensory processing, managing socially demanding situations and learning social cues and feminine presentation, through to coming out as trans during an autistic meltdown, Laura draws on her personal experiences from life prior to transition and diagnosis, and moving on to the years of self-discovery, to give a unique insight into the nuances of sexuality, gender and autism, and how they intersect. Charting the ups and downs of being autistic and on the LGBT spectrum with searing honesty and humour, this is an empowering, life-affirming read for anyone who’s felt they don’t fit in. A ground-breaking memoir that explores how the author’s gender identity and sexuality interrelate with her autism diagnosis. It follows the author from childhood through to her late twenties and includes wide-ranging essays on autism and gender.

“Hauntingly relatable, Uncomfortable Labels is an incredibly necessary tale of living at the intersection of transgender and autistic identities. Humorously and accessibly written, Laura Kate Dale’s story treads grounds scarcely discussed in memoir. A valuable addition to any library collection - personal or academic - on disability or gender issues.” —Jes Grobman, writer and sexuality educator

Radical and emotionally raw, this book pushes the boundaries of trans representation by redefining ‘trans’ as an identity with its own power and strength, that goes beyond the gender binary. ‘All those layers of expectation that are thrust upon us; boy, masculine, femme, transgender, sexual, woman, real, are such a weight to carry round. I feel transgressive. I feel hybrid. I feel trans.’ In this radical and emotionally raw book, Juno Roche pushes the boundaries of trans representation by redefining ‘trans’ as an identity with its own power and strength, that goes beyond the gender binary. Through intimate conversations with leading and influential figures in the trans community, such as Kate Bornstein, Travis Alabanza, Josephine Jones, Glamrou and E-J Scott, this book highlights the diversity of trans identities and experiences with regard to love, bodies, sex, race and class, and urges trans people - and the world at large - to embrace a ‘trans’ identity as something that offers empowerment and autonomy. Powerfully written, and with humour and advice throughout, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of gender and how we identify ourselves.

“Juno’s writing is brilliantly personal, honest and always funny. Here, the thought and theory is led by feeling and is so much more powerful for it. Her interviewees are among the most important trans and nonbinary people in the world today. Trans power is not to be missed!” —Amelia Abraham, author of Queer Intentions: A (Personal) Journey Through LGBTQ+ Culture.

The go-to accessible guide to working memory issues for kids with SpLDs and the adults who care for them. Why can’t I remember what my parents just asked me to do? She presents key tips and strategies, such as the benefits of eating chocolate or of barefoot running, that will help children both at home and at school, and includes a section at the end for adults describing how we can test for working memory issues.
