A LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER

Dear Friends of JKP Just over 30 years ago, JKP opened for business on my kitchen table – yes, the press is that classic of independent publishers, the company that started on a wing and a prayer, and then found real things to do in the world. I bought a very small list (8 books) in social work from Kogan Page, and with 13 years of marketing experience, but absolutely none in any other part of the business, rolled up my sleeves. With an enormous amount of help from other people (not least two small daughters, excellent envelope stuffers), within a year we had a small office and some book contracts. Now we publish 250 books a year, and have an office in Philadelphia as well as our London base – there are 40 of us in the King’s Cross office, and 6 in America. We have spread far beyond social work, into autism, arts therapies, education, religion, Chinese medicine, and gender diversity to mention just some of the areas in which we publish. None of this would have been possible without so many amazing authors – we are really grateful to the many, many people who have supported the company over the years and felt aligned with our goal to make the world a better place through their work. If you would like to join them in writing for JKP, we would be thrilled. For our anniversary catalogue, I am especially excited about The Moral Heart of Public Service, published with the Westminster Abbey Institute, which addresses questions of central importance to our uncertain times. In the pages that follow you will also find the first books in our gender diversity list, which address key issues of understanding, and of inclusion. We have exciting new books coming out this year, on autism, and indeed on all the subjects on which we publish – and we are expanding our children’s list. We are all at JKP so glad to be publishing such positive books at a time when so much looks so uncertain. Thank you very much for your support
