Jul 2020 | £16.99 | 176pp | pb | World rights available | ISBN-9781787752924

Written by two experienced clinicians working with young people, this book covers topics including identification of both conditions, diagnosis and the recovery process, challenging current thinking and promoting new ways of working to promote treatment and awareness. Autism and eating disorders often present in similar ways, whether through restrictive or selective eating behaviours, or rigid or obsessive thought patterns. As a result, individuals may receive treatment for one condition with the other – although present – going undiagnosed. This is a practical guide for the adults supporting this group of teens, recommending changes in policy and practice in order to improve the care of young people experiencing these conditions. Drawing on in-depth case studies highlighting the need for young people and their families to feel understood and listened to, the authors show how we can empower these young people to reach their full emotional and physical potential.

Finding Your Fashion

THE IMPORTANCE OF

112

Style

Don’t be afraid to create your own uniform. I’ve found a simple and timeless style that works for me. I gravita te towards black, which means 99% of my clothe s are black. I wear black Levi high-waisted slim jeans that I wash over and over until they’re really soft. I wear a selection of classic sweats hirts that are made of highquality ultra-soft cotton . I’ve found that sweats hirts are more versatile than people give them credit for. I have some that have a weave that makes them look like sweaters and some that have a lace overlay , making them trendier than just a plain sweatshirt. Since I get cold very easily, I always layer with a cotton or velvet cardigan, hoodie or a blazer. My outfit is versati le and classic enough that I can wear it to school and also wear it to my after-school job. 23 I want to empha size that what you wear doesn’t define who you are. There are things that are so much more important, such as being kind, generous, thoughtful, accepting and forgiving. You probab ly have most of these traits in abundance. Having said that, sometimes autistic teen girls are judged by their peers for what they wear and can be mercilessly teased and bullied for it. You may want to dress in a way that helps you to blend in, so that instead of focusi ng on what you’re wearing, people can focus on your positiv e qualities, such as your sense of humor, intellig ence, honesty and trustworthine ss.

WEARING A BRA

Some autistic girls resist wearing a bra. You may find them uncomfortable and perceive them as unnecessary. 113

With their trademark candour and empathy, Juno Roche gives voice to a generation of gender explorers who are making gender work for them, and in the process, reveals a kinder, more accepting world, that we should all be fighting for.

Just to be completely crystal clear and not leave a single shred or sliver of doubt in anyone’s mind as to why I’m writing this book, ‘I believe that children who are questioning and exploring their gender or simply making gender do what they need it to do in order that they can lead happy, functional and aspirational lives, are the future of this planet. They are the gender explorers and gender bosses that we all so desperately need.’ Yes, I feel as strongly as that, I believe that they are our future. These young trans and non-binary people are managing to ignore the enforced dominant script of gender in which we have no control and writing their own scripts from scratch to fit their lives. They are resolute in wanting to be the best that they can be, they want to be happy. And they want to be happy now! Just happy. – Extract from the book

In Their Shoes Navigating Non-Binary Life Jamie Windust A fun and sassy guide to living your best non-binary life, written by a rising star in the trans community. There is no one way to be non-binary, and that’s truthfully one of the best things about it. It’s an identity that is yours to shape. Combining light-hearted anecdotes with their own hardwon wisdom, Jamie Windust explores everything from fashion, dating, relationships and family, through to mental health, work and future key debates. From trying on clothes in secret to iconic looks, first dates to polyamorous liaisons, passports to pronouns, Jamie shows you how to navigate the world and your evolving identity in every type of situation. Frank, funny, and brilliantly feisty, this must-read book is a call to arms for non-binary self-acceptance, self-appreciation and self-celebration.

Being non-binary, for me, means that there is no one way that I should look. Many people think that if you’re nonbinary, you have to express your gender in an androgynous manner. However, that’s simply not true, because your gender expression is limitless. There is no way in which we should look. There’s no way that any gender should look, but the binary way in which people gender themselves comes with societal pressure to conform to traditional expressions of looking one way or another. Although it’s completely valid for cis people to express their gender however they see fit, for me and many non-binary people, identifying as non-binary means that all of the arbitrary rules of how we should look just don’t exist anymore. Freedom. Gender freedom. Fashion freedom. My gender expression had always been feminine, even before I came out as non-binary. I always loved the elegance and drama of femininity. It was just so beautiful to me. I always used to think about how, when I was going out to dinner or somewhere fancy, it was infuriating that I was expected to take ten minutes to get ready. I was expected to throw on some fancy trousers and a shirt and tie, and then just be ready. I wanted to be able to take my time and have that moment of feminine elegance. When I was fourteen or fifteen, I used to always think, ‘God, why can’t I wear a ball gown to this family meal that’s just going to be at Pizza Express?’ Seeing pop stars and film stars all glammed up on the TV made me resent the fact that I wasn’t allowed to do that. It just never sat right with me. Why wasn’t I allowed? Who was telling me I couldn’t? – Extract from the book

Far too many autistic people are currently in inappropriate institutional placements, putting their basic human rights at risk and experiencing a poor quality of life. This book will help practitioners to develop high quality community support to facilitate discharges and prevent admissions, by providing them with effective, practical strategies to communicate with and more effectively support autistic people right across the spectrum. Common assumptions and beliefs are challenged, including the idea that ‘behaviours’ are an inevitable part of autism, and practical approaches are offered to promote autonomy, respect for human rights and empathy with autistic perspectives as a basis for preventing distressed behaviour. This will enable practitioners to support and empower all autistic people to achieve a good quality of life in their communities.

And when was the last time you felt awumbuk…I mean really felt it deep down in your soul? So, I’m assuming you didn’t know that basorexia is feeling a sudden urge to kiss someone, and awumbuk is feeling empty after guests have left your home. But just because you hadn’t heard of them, does that mean you’ve never felt them? How about something simpler, like sadness? If you had never heard of the word sad, could you still feel sad? And, if you could, how would you know that you were feeling sad? It wasn’t until you were about two years old that two parts of your brain – the dorsolateral cortex and anterior cingulate – started to mature, and these are the drivers of verbal fluency. Only at this point did you begin to use words as symbols to represent your feelings. And this is huge. Gradually you were able to direct your attention towards how you were feeling. You could think about your emotions rather than simply experiencing them. – Extract from the book
