 Autism Autism

Being Twice Exceptional Melanie Hayes Defining the common experience of ‘twice exceptionality’ for adult autistics: what it is, how it manifests, and how personal skills and strengths can actually be used to help address areas of struggle or weakness. Twice exceptionality (2e) is not well understood. While many parents, educators, and professionals are working to bridge the knowledge gap and help 2e children, there is still a great deal we do not know about how life turns out for those children once they grow up. How do 2e adults deal with the complex aspects of being an adult? What are your prospects if you are brilliant, but can’t get into college? What if you fail at work because you don’t know how to fit in socially? This book provides first-hand stories about the experiences of 2e adults, offering compassionate coping strategies for overcoming and rethinking the tough parts. It champions radical acceptance of 2e people and celebrates their unique outlook on the world.

“Dr. Melanie Hayes has translated her warmth, compassion, and expertise as an educator and clinician into a deeply respectful and enlightening book about understanding and embracing twice-exceptional adults with autism. She brings the complexities of being 2eA to life and offers sound advice, comfort, and a guide for living a meaningful life.” – Dan Peters, Ph.D, Licensed Psychologist Executive Director, Summit Center Feb 2022 | £16.99 | 240pp | pb | ISBN-9781787759626

The Continuum of Restorative Practices in Schools An Instructional Training Manual for Practitioners Margaret Thorsborne and Dave Vinegrad Foreword by Brenda Morrison

This invaluable manual looks at the continuum of practices in schools implementing restorative approaches to problem-solving. This ‘how to’ guide offers guidance on the issues of carrying out restorative practices, including coping with day-to-day problems, and offers worksheets for practical daily use. Beginning with challenges to orthodox thinking about behaviour change, it goes on to describe a multitude of approaches to respond to minor incidents in school settings, then takes a close look at using restorative approaches to bullying, before it finally focuses on the formal end of the continuum.

“This book is so much more than a ‘How To’ manual for restorative practices in schools. By offering a continuum of responses it lays out a whole-school approach to the full range of relationship issues supported with excellent advice on decision-making and a powerful chaptter on ‘What ifs?’” – Maurie Abraham, Principal, Hobsonville Point Secondary School Feb 2022 | £35.00 | 224pp | pb | ISBN-9781839970412

Queer Body Power Finding Your Body Positivity Essie Dennis A radical call to arms for queer body positivity, providing inspiration, support and personal stories. As a young, queer, plus-size person, Essie Dennis has spent a lot of time feeling like they weren’t enough – not queer enough, not feminine enough, not perfect enough. When they took to social media to share how they felt, they were overwhelmed by how many others felt the same: • I look too masculine to be non-binary • I look too feminine to be a lesbian • Am I too fat for drag? Inviting you to challenge accepted beauty standards and the concept of ‘the perfect body’, Essie takes everything they have learned on their journey to self-acceptance and body satisfaction to help guide you towards loving your queer body. From gender, sexuality and reclaiming your body, through to food, politics, social media and fatphobia, this radical book starts a conversation about body image and mental health that queer people are so often left out of. Fiercely and unapologetically written, and with honest advice and powerful stories from a diverse range of queer people throughout, this is an inspiring and necessary book that will show you that you are enough. Mar 2022 | £14.99 | 240pp | pb | 15–99 years | ISBN-9781787759046

About the Author Essie Dennis is a queer activist and writer. As a plus-size model they promote body positivity through their popular social media channels and have written widely on queer mental health and body image. This is their first book.

Extract from the Book: I hope that my own lived experiences will resonate, alongside the contributions of other queer people that I interviewed for this book. I want it to open up a dialogue about queer mental health and body image. It is not easy to feel like there is not enough space for you in the world or that your body and self-image will never be accepted. I have learned that when it feels like all that is good and easy in the world is not meant for you, you must simply carve out a space for yourself, sit down in it and say, ‘I belong.’

SHORTLISTED FOR THE POLARI BOOK PRIZE 2020 “All those layers of expectation that are thrust upon us; boy, masculine, femme, transgender, sexual, woman, real, are such a weight to carry round. My Black Motherhood Mental Health, Stigma, Race and the System Sandra Igwe A passionate first-hand account of what it is like being a Black mother coping with postnatal anxiety and depression – and how Black women are let down when they are most vulnerable. Joyful. Graceful. Blessed. Strong. Anxious. Depressed. Stigmatised. Stereotyped. What happens when motherhood isn’t what you expected – and when you reach out for support, you are met with judgment and prejudice? Sandra Igwe shares her journey as a young Black mother, coping with sleepless nights, anxiety and loneliness after the birth of her first daughter. Burdened by cultural expectations of the ‘good mother’ and the ‘strong Black woman’ trope, her mental health struggles became an uphill battle. Black women are at higher risk of developing postnatal depression but are the least likely to be identified as depressed. Sharing the voices of other mothers, Sandra examines how culture, racism, stigma and a lack of trust in services prevent women getting the help they need. Breaking open the conversation on motherhood, race, and mental health, she demands that Black women are listened to, believed, and understood. About the Author Sandra Igwe is the Founder of The Motherhood Group, a platform and safe space to support the Black motherhood experience, through events, workshops, peer-to-peer support, collaborative projects, training, advocacy and campaigning. Sandra is co-chair of the National Inquiry into Racial Injustice in Maternity Care and a trustee of Birthrights charity.

Extract from the Book I sat on the edge of my bed, arms shaking and aching because I held her for so long. It was airy dark, with just the illuminating night light on, and although I sang her favourite lullaby that somehow made her unwind, my voice could not be heard. I stayed silent on what I had experienced from the 3rd of March 2016: my treatment, the expectations, my perinatal mind, being dismissed. I was unable to hear and be heard by all the other black mothers that, like me, had embarked on their journey into motherhood. Born and raised in Southwest London, I watched my Nigerian mother do absolutely everything for me and my three sisters.

She just did it all, cleaning, cooking, braiding our hair, ironing our uniform, taking us to church – the list went on. Sometimes I struggle to even remember her just sitting down and resting, I mean, what was rest when there was always something to be done. From the gaze of my young and naive eyes, there was a perception that she always seemed to float through motherhood like a swan gliding over a still lake. If there was any frantic leg work going on under the water, it was never obvious to me or my sisters. Motherhood looked easy, effortless, my personal calling and I looked forward, eagerly, to the day I would be a mother.

Turn the Tide on Climate Anxiety Sustainable Action for Your Mental Health and the Planet Megan Kennedy-Woodard and Dr. Patrick Kennedy-Williams Foreword by Arizona Muse – Founder and Trustee of Dirt Foundation for the Regeneration of Earth

How to understand and manage your psychological responses to climate change to protect your mental health (and the planet). It’s hard to watch the news, scroll through social media, or listen to the radio without hearing or seeing something disturbing about the climate emergency. This can trigger all sorts of emotions: worry, anger, sadness, guilt, and even grief but also often over-looked positive emotions like motivation, connection, care, and abundance that support mental health and climate action for sustainable longevity. Written by psychologists with extensive experience in treating people with eco-anxiety, this book shows you how to harness these emotions, validate them, and transform them into positive action. It enables you to assess and understand your psychological responses to the climate crisis and move away from unhealthy defence mechanisms, such as denial and avoidance. Ultimately, it shows that the solution to both climate anxiety and the climate crisis is the same – action that is sustainable for you and for the planet – and empowers you to take steps towards this.

“Are you losing sleep worrying over the Climate Crisis? I am. Do you feel powerless when confronted but such a huge global issue? I do. Is Climate Change starting to affect your mental health? Expert advice from bestselling author Dawn Huebner to help 6 to 12 year olds manage sadness and fear about troubling world events. When children learn about something big and bad – even when they hear only bits and pieces – their brains get busy trying to make sense of it. Where did it happen? Why did it happen? And especially, will it happen again? Something Bad Happened guides children ages 6 to 12 and the adults who care about them through tough conversations about national and international tragedies. The non-specific term “bad thing” is used throughout, keeping this a flexible tool, and so children are never inadvertently exposed to events their parents have chosen not to share. Fear, sadness and uncertainty about the “bad thing” all are normalized, and immediately usable coping tools provided. 2019 | £10.99 | 80pp | pb | 6–12 years | ISBN-9781787750746
