The Child’s World
The Essential Guide to Assessing Vulnerable Children, Young People and their Families
Edited by Jan Horwath and Dendy PlattThis definitive textbook provides accessible information on best practice for assessing the needs and strengths of vulnerable children and their families. It explores the challenges that practitioners face routinely - with suggestions as to how to address them - as well as the established areas for assessment, of children’s developmental needs, parenting ability and motivation, and socio-economic factors.
This new edition has been extended substantially to include recent practice, policy and theoretical developments, such as understanding the lived experience of children, young people, and family members. It also considers children’s neurological development, assessing parental capacity to change, early help assessments, emerging areas of practice such as child sexual exploitation, and working with asylum-seeking and trafficked children.
Crucially, this updated edition takes a broader approach in offering relevant information to a range of professionals working with vulnerable children. The importance of inter-professional working is emphasised throughout.
“If there is a ‘Highway Code’ for children’s social work then this book is it. Updated to reflect recent developments it retains its timeless and classic quality. An indispensable text for all social work practitioners and teachers.”

Risk, Rights, Resilience and Relationships
Edited by Dez HolmesFocusing on young people and adolescence, this book explores the complexity of contemporary adolescent safeguarding. It highlights evidence-informed practice and innovation in this area at the work, serving as an accessible and invaluable resource for all working with and supporting young people facing risk and harm.
Core themes covered by the book are the nature of harms facing some young people, the potential pitfalls of some professional responses, and the current legal framework for safeguarding young people where harm occurs outside the family home. It includes an overview of adolescent development, and argues for a holistic, systemic response that addresses the structural disadvantage facing many young people at risk and incorporates participatory and trauma-informed practice designed to promote resilience. It draws on innovative approaches in local areas, such as Transitional Safeguarding, to make the case for a person-centred, evidence-informed and rights-based approach to safeguarding young people.
As well as being invaluable to practitioners, managers and strategic leaders working in this field, this is also ideally suited to be a text for any social work course or professional development programme on adolescent safeguarding practice.

Manual Handling in Health and Social Care, Second
Edition
An A-Z of Law and Practice
Michael MandelstamManual Handling in Health and Social Care is written for all those involved in the manual handling of adults or children - including those carrying it out, assessors, managers and commissioners.
It lays out the current legal requirements in a non-technical way and includes case studies illustrating the law applied in practice, across health, social care and sometimes educational settings. The book applies to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. An extended introduction sets out challenges, past, present and future, including safety, balancing risk with duties to meet people’s needs, human rights, avoidance of blanket policies, mental capacity, safeguarding, the limited resources of statutory services and single-handed care. It also considers some of the legal implications of increased use of technology (including remote assessment), as well as the “mechanisation” of care and its application to manual handling.
The main part of the book is in the form of an A-Z guide, providing quick access to relevant legislation and common law (negligence) rules applying to personal injury cases. It covers also, extensively, judicial review legal challenges to decisions, when people and their families disagree with manual handing decisions that have been made. In addition, relevant ombudsman cases are included.
The book will be essential reference for staff and managers in health and social care settings, students, legal professionals and all those working to ensure good practice and compliance with the law.
Michael Mandelstam provides independent legal training to local authorities, the NHS and voluntary organisations. In the past, he worked at the Disabled Living Foundation, a national voluntary organisation, and for a few years at the Social Services Inspectorate at the Department of Health. He holds postgraduate qualifications in law, information studies and the history of science and medicine.

Unseen Lives
The Hidden World of Modern Slavery
Kate Garbers
...a fully grown man utterly broken by what he had experienced, physically and mentally exhausted with physical evidence showing the overt signs of the abuse he had been through.’
This is how Kate Garbers met Riso, a man who had been trafficked and in forced labour for months, with no way out. Modern slavery is far closer than we think. Yet it is largely unseen and unknown to most of us - a crime against humanity hidden in plain sight.
In this revealing exposé, Kate Garbers shares moving stories of survivors she has met and shares insights she has gained through over a decade of anti-slavery work. Survivor stories are complemented by a forensic account of how modern slavery works and the many forms it can take - from forced labour to organ harvesting - and how it is enabled to continue by our current laws and systems.
Unseen Lives also provides a vision of hope for those looking to challenge and dismantle modern slavery, laying out what changes we need to make as individuals and as a society in order to effectively tackle modern slavery and improve the support of survivors.
Kate Garbers has worked in the anti-slavery sector since 2009. She is Founder and former Director of Unseen UK, a charity that provides safety, hope and choice to survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery.

Pulling Through
Help for Families Navigating Life-Changing Illness
Catherine Jessop
“And at that exact moment, the earth tipped, and we all slid into a parallel universe...”
On Christmas Day 2016, the Jessops were just an ordinary family, but on Boxing Day, one near-death experience swept them all into the bewildering world of hospitals and serious illness, and their lives changed forever.
Pulling Through is a handbook of everything Catherine has learned on their journey. It covers many practicalities, such as explaining hospital tests and scans, jargon-busting medical terms, finance, rehabilitation and more. But it also illuminates the emotional aspect of illness and how massively it affects family and friends. There are chapters on the power of nature, music, counselling, optimism and humour, and how to look after the mental health of both patient and carer.
This is a book of hope, help and reassurance on every aspect of coping with life-changing illness in the family: the good, the bad, the funny, the sad, and the useful. If you, or someone you know, has a life-changing illness, then this book is here to help.
Catherine Jessop is a writer with a background in publishing and marketing, as well as a full-time carer for her husband Alan, who has a permanent brain injury following autoimmune encephalitis. She has also worked in primary schools with children with learning difficulties and special needs. She writes a weekly blog promoting a variety of independent publishers for Compass Independent Publishing Services. She has three children, two stepchildren, four grandchildren and a dog, and lives in West London.
“I recognised so much in Catherine Jessop’s story: the lottery of healthcare, the need to rapidly learn on the job how our health and social care systems work, the mundanity of many of the daily trials - such as hospital parking, the emotional roller-coaster, and the way life splits into ‘before’ and ‘after’. And I cannot recommend Pulling Through highly enough. It covers really tough territory with honesty, insight, humour and a determination to support others who may suddenly find themselves plunged into this ‘after’ world - not only through encephalitis but any number of life-altering illnesses and conditions. Pulling Through is so much more than a guide to what happens next and how to survive it. It is a voice penetrating the chaos and muddle of navigating care with the message ‘I’ve done this. I can help you do it too’.”

Social Work, Cats and Rocket Science
Stories of Making a Difference in Social Work with Adults
Elaine James, Rob Mitchell and Hannah Morgan. With Mark Harvey and Ian Burges
Forewords by Lyn Romeo and Mark Neary
This book tells stories of just how powerful social work can be. At its heart are stories drawn from frontline practice, ranging from first interviews through to complex decisionmaking.
Along the way, we meet the social worker who assessed a cat (though for all the right reasons). We witness the cost of failing to protect the rights of adults, exemplified in the tragic death of Connor Sparrowhawk. We also see the transformations that can happen when social workers really get it right - as in the case of Peter, whose love of balloons led them to feature in his care plan. These stories from practice are combined with guidance and reflective exercises to offer valuable practice wisdom and learning for new and experienced social workers alike.
By turns funny, wise and moving, this book articulates the personal and professional qualities needed to practise rights-based social work. It reveals the potential of the profession to make a difference to the lives of individuals and to communities.

Social Work with Autistic People
Essential Knowledge, Skills and the Law for Working with Children and Adults
Yo Dunn
Forewords by Alex Ruck Keene and Ruth AllenThis book will help social workers and practitioners to find achievable solutions to support autistic people - including those with complex needs - to live fulfilling lives in their communities.
Far too many autistic people are currently in inappropriate institutional placements, putting their basic human rights at risk and experiencing a poor quality of life. Good quality support for autistic people is achievable, even in a social care system under pressure. This book will help practitioners to develop high quality community support to facilitate discharges and prevent admissions, by providing them with effective, practical strategies to communicate with and more effectively support autistic people right across the spectrum.
Common assumptions and beliefs are challenged, including the idea that ‘behaviours’ are an inevitable part of autism, and practical approaches are offered to promote autonomy, respect for human rights and empathy with autistic perspectives as a basis for preventing distressed behaviour. This will enable practitioners to support and empower all autistic people to achieve a good quality of life in their communities.
Yo Dunn is an independent trainer and consultant who works across the public sector, specialising in autism and law. She creates and delivers high level training for social workers on the legal frameworks of social care, safeguarding and autism for a variety of clients, including many English local authorities.

NHS Continuing Healthcare
An A-Z of Law, Practice, Funding Decisions and Challenges
Michael Mandelstam
This authoritative guide to the law of continuing healthcare provides clarity on a contentious issue for those in long-term care: which adults are eligible for full NHS funding, as opposed to self-funded social care.
Written by seasoned legal expert Michael Mandelstam, it provides practitioners with clear information on both the letter and spirit of the law, written in an accessible style suitable for a wide range of health and social care practitioners. The book gives all the need-to-knows in a handy A-Z format for quick reference, including key legal rules, guidance and case law.
It contains also an extended analysis, with detailed evidence, of NHS continuing healthcare over the last 30 years up to the present. This is critical in order to understand why the rules are so complex, confusing and sometimes disregarded, and why decisions can seem counter-intuitive, unfair and difficult to challenge.
The book is essential reading to assist the making of decisions that are fair, lawful and transparent.
Michael Mandelstam provides independent legal training, advice and consultancy to local authorities, the NHS and voluntary organisations. In the past, he worked at the Disabled Living Foundation, a national voluntary organisation, and for a few years at the Social Services Inspectorate at the Department of Health. He holds postgraduate qualifications in law, information studies and the history of science and medicine.
“This excellent book should be essential reading for the Secretary of State for Health and all health service managers and social workers involved in CHC decision making. It is my hope this book will put the woeful application of CHC decision-making back under the spotlight and into the national conversation.”

My Black Motherhood
Mental Health, Stigma, Racism and the System
Sandra IgweJoyful. Graceful. Blessed. Strong. Anxious. Depressed. Stigmatised. Stereotyped. What happens when motherhood isn’t what you expected - and when you reach out for support, you are met with judgment and prejudice?
Sandra Igwe shares her journey as a young Black mother, coping with sleepless nights, anxiety and loneliness after the birth of her first daughter. Burdened by cultural expectations of the ‘good mother’ and the ‘strong Black woman’ trope, her mental health struggles became an uphill battle.
Black women are at higher risk of developing postnatal depression but are the least likely to be identified as depressed. Sharing the voices of other mothers, Sandra examines how culture, racism, stigma and a lack of trust in services prevent women getting the help they need. Breaking open the conversation on motherhood, race, and mental health, she demands that Black women are listened to, believed, and understood.

Black Again
Losing and Reclaiming My Racial Identity
LaTonya Summers
“I was driven by the belief that if I wanted to go somewhere I’d need to be something other than Black.” LaTonya Summers was only six years old the first time she unconsciously tried to be “more white”. Recollecting experiences from her childhood in foster care through to her life today as an Assistant Professor and mother, LaTonya examines how her perception of self was affected by internalized racism and led her to adopt white norms - influencing everything from her music and clothing choices to her speech and values. Join LaTonya in her journey of realization - how all those years assimilating, stretching and pressing for whiteness harmed her, and how, in a world that sees her as Black, it’s about time she did too.
Discover how LaTonya has truly “made it” by embracing and endorsing the Afrocentric norms and values that have sustained her and her family better than any white picket fence ever could.
