MEET THE NEW LTG PHILIP NOKEO WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2014 philipcnokeo@gmail.com 206-355-1984 “Hi guys! My name is Philip Nokeo and I’m a junior at West Seattle High School. I’m into cars, games, and food! I’m the type of person that likes to travel around the world and experience new things! When I grow up, I want to work for Apple or Microsoft to help develop phones or other electronic devices.” “I plan on strengthening the division by encouraging clubs to host events or socials that will keep members up to date and active in Key Club. For example, I will encourage clubs to have a potluck or go bowling as a whole. This will allow members to become comfortable and used to socializing with people from their own school, before attending an actual DCM. Another goal is to not only keep the division active and strong as a whole, but also active and strong in each school.”

ELIMINATE PROJECT & KCCP ELIMINATE PROJECT Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT). Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every nine minutes—nearly 60,000 newborn children every year. A significant number of women also die due to maternal tetanus. The effects of the disease are excruciating—tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. MNT is completely preventable it only costs $1.80 to protect mothers and pass on immunity to their children. MNT has also recently been eliminated in China, so keep on fundraising so we can eliminate MNT from the rest of the world! Watch this video for more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tw cZsxza9nQ

KIWANIS CHILDREN’S CANCER PROGRAM The Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Program (KCCP) was founded in 2010 by Past Governor Frank Morehouse of the PNW District of Kiwanis International. Past Governor Frank’s inspiration was a young cancer patient named Penny, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Penny eventually lost her battle with cancer and KCCP is dedicated to Penny’s memory. Each year, thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer and with the help of research, their chances of surviving have tripled. Finding a cure for children’s cancer will benefit cancer patients worldwide because although research of adult cancers does nothing to help cure children’s cancers, research of children’s cancers can help find a cure for adult cancers. The hospitals we support are: the Doernbecher Children’s hospital; the Seattle Children’s Hospital; and the British Columbia Children’s Hospital. Let me know if you have any questions!

PROJECT EDUCATE PROJECT EDUCATE Jamaica is known for its blue Caribbean beaches, its rich blue mountain coffee, Bob Marley, the fastest man in the world - Usain Bolt – and its food, but people often fail to recognize the hardships people face in this paradise. The 2012-2013 PNW District Project is Project Educate – our goal is to raise $30000 to send to three schools in Jamaica to provide library equipment, student assistance, and classroom materials to improve the quality of education.

HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT PROJECT EDUCATE? 1) Like the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/p nwprojecteducate?fref=ts 2) Visit our blog at projecteducateja.wordpress.co m 3) Buy a Project Educate shirt for $15 from your club president! 4) Buy a Project Educate wristband for $1 5) Write a letter to a student in Jamaica 6) Help fundraise money! Our divisional goal is $3000.
