This project is the creation of a new and meaningful animal shelter typology that will encourage increased adoption rates by establishing a supportive and inspiring environment for sheltered animals and for the variety of people who pass by, visit, work and volunteer at the facility. The project will provide a better work environment for staff and volunteers, will integrate an educational program for the public, will seek dynamic interaction between humans and animals, and create an overall better shelter experience.

It’s buzzing with positive energy here. Everyone is in good spirits, some people enjoy a cup of coffee, others grab a beer on the rooftop. Children are practicing how to read and vets in training are learning how to microchip cats. Visitors bend down to pat heads and scratch bellies. Downtown dwellers are surrounded by adoptable animals or watching their own pets romp around. Welcome to the East Village Animal Care Facility and Community Center.

PROGRAM: ANIMALS ALONG THE PERIMETER

FORM: INCREASE TRANSPARENCY

GREEN SPACE: THE URBAN CONTEXT

• House animals along the perimeter of the building as much as possible to promote a lively facade and for animals to gain access to natural light and ventilation, which enhances circadian rhythm. • This strategy will increase foot traffic, visitors, and adoption.

• An atrium with clerestory windows in the center of the building will allow for daylight to get into the center of the space. • This strategy creates more transparency and centrality in the public spaces of the building, while the perimeter is designated for more private animal adoption courtyards and services. • The atrium presents more verticality within the 3 story building.

• A green roof will serve as a community dog park • Residents in surrounding high rises will have ample views onto the playful roofscape. • A linear park is planned for E. Street, which will be an enhancement to draw users into the space. • Increased landscaping along the building perimeter.

EXISTING BUILDING

SUSTAINABILITY

The materials of the existing building will remain, which consists mainly of a stucco and stone facade, 20’ reinforced concrete structural bays and floor slabs. The facade will be cleaned and painted, and new signage and window motifs will be added to promote a lively facade. The most significant change to the existing building is the atrium, which is currently a clerestory at the third floor. The clerestory is raised up two levels to create a four story atrium space that brings light into the back and center of the building.

Sustainability and efficiency are a primary design driver while incorporating functional and safety requirements for an animal care facility. The building has several passive strategies including a compact design, natural daylight and cross ventilation opportunities (both increased by the added atrium space). Other active strategies include adding a green roof, an efficient photovoltaic system on the roof, and replacing the glass with low-e, double glazed windows, especially on the west and south facades.
