01 CONCEPT
DIAGRAMS
STATEMENT(S) PROGRAM: ANIMALS ALONG THE PERIMETER
GREEN SPACE: THE URBAN CONTEXT
FORM: INCREASE TRANSPARENCY
THE MAIN IDEA FOR THIS PROJECT IS TO REVERSE THE TYPOLOGY OF A TYPICAL ANIMAL SHELTER AND MAKE IT AN ENGAGING PLACE FOR THE COMMUNITY, VISITORS, STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND ANIMALS. HOUSING THE ANIMALS ALONG THE PERIMETER PROMOTES A LIVELY FACADE AND ALLOWS THE ANIMALS ACCESS TO NATURAL LIGHT AND VENTILATION. THIS WILL INCREASE FOOT TRAFFIC AND INCREASE ADOPTION.
CREATING A GREEN ROOF WILL ENABLE A DOG PARK FOR THE COMMUNITY, WHICH IS LACKING IN DOWNTOWN. RESIDENTS IN HIGH RISE BUILDINGS SURROUNDING THE SITE WILL HAVE AMPLE VIEWS ONTO THE PLAYFUL ROOFSCAPE. A LINEAR PARK IS PLANNED FOR E. STREET, WHICH WILL BE AN ENHANCEMENT TO DRAW USERS INTO THE SPACE. INCREASED LANDSCAPING IS NECESSARY ALONG THE BUILDING AS THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO TREES OR PLANTS.
AN ATRIUM WITH CLERESTORY WINDOWS IN THE CENTER OF THE BUILDING WILL ALLOW FOR DIRECT SUNLIGHT TO GET INTO THE CENTER OF THE SPACE. IT ALSO CREATES MORE TRANSPARENCY AND CENTRALITY IN THE PUBLIC SPACES OF THE BUILDING, WHILE THE PERIMETER IS DESIGNATED FOR MORE PRIVATE ANIMAL ADOPTION COURTYARDS AND SERVICES. THE ATRIUM PRESENTS MORE VERTICALITY WITHIN AN OTHERWISE STOUT BUILDING.

SYSTEMS: STRUCTURAL
05 SYSTEMS
The main structure will consist of the existing building’s materials as to reduce costs. Structural elements include 18x18” columns at 21’ bays longitudinally and 22 1/2’ bays latitudinally. There are shear walls at the egress stairways and elevators. Concrete slabs act as diaphragms to accommodate the span. One major structural element that will change from the existing building is the atrium at the second floor where there is currently floor area being used. The roof will also raise above the third floor to create a sense of height within the stout building.

SYSTEMS: MECHANICAL
Roof structures over kennels will house systems for animals. Public spaces and animal adoption spaces will be separated into zones. Other zoned spaces include veterinary areas on the second floor and possibly offices. The system will be a key component to comfortability and a positive adoption experience. Room temperature should be between 72 and 78 degrees with six to twelve air changes per hour. Forced air systems work best in this typology with additional radiant heating in the floor slabs for the kennels and additional heating for the exotics and reptiles.

05 SYSTEMS
SYSTEMS: ELECTRICAL
Feature Lights: Larger lights in big spaces will be something custom and on-theme with the typology such as a collar or giant tennis ball. Track Lights: track lights along the public space walls will help highlight feature success stories and other photos of animals on the walls. Pendant Lights. Pendant lights will hang from structure or ACT and act as a grid system in higher volume spaces such as the atrium and exercise yards. Up lights. Up lights will be executed in kennels to highlight animals and bounce of “gable roof” structure”. ACT lights. Recessed ceiling light fixtures are a cost effective and inclusive method for ensuring all spaces are well lit.
