01 DEGREE PROJECT STUDIO: ANIMAL SHELTER AS ADAPTIVE REUSE OF THE OLD SAN DIEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY This project is the creation of a new and meaningful animal shelter typology to encourage increased adoption rates by establishing a supportive and inspiring environment for sheltered animals and for the variety of people who pass by, visit, work and volunteer at the facility.

PROGRAM: ANIMALS ON PERIMETER House animals along the perimeter as much as possible to promote a lively facade, allow animals to gain access to natural light and ventilation and increase foot traffic, visitors, and adoption.

GREEN SPACE: THE URBAN CONTEXT
Creating a green roof will enable a dog park for the community. Residents in surrounding high rises will have ample views onto the playful roofscape. A linear park is planned for E. Street and there is increased landscaping along the building edge.
FORM: INCREASE TRANSPARENCY
An atrium with clerestory windows in the center of the building will allow for daylight to get into the center of the space, creating more transparency, centrality in the public areas, and verticality within the three story building.

The materials of the existing building will remain, which consists mainly of a stucco and stone facade, 20’ reinforced concrete structural bays and floor slabs. The facade will be cleaned and painted, and new signage and window motifs will be added to promote a lively facade. The most significant change to the existing building is the atrium, which is currently a clerestory at the third floor. The clerestory is raised up two levels to create a four story atrium space that brings light into the back and center of the building. SECTION XX
SOUTH ELEVATION
Sustainability and efficiency are a primary design driver while incorporating functional and safety requirements for an animal care facility. The building has several passive strategies including a compact design, natural daylight and cross ventilation opportunities (both increased by the added atrium space). Other active strategies include adding a green roof, an efficient photovoltaic system on the roof, and replacing the glass with low-e, double glazed windows, especially on the west and south facades. The waiting area features semi public booths for counseling and adoption facilitation.
The lobby features touch screens to include featured pets, success adoption stories, and more.

Dog kennels face green walls to separate from play yard and to mitigate noise and the layout creates a unique circulation pattern throughout the space.

02 TALL BUILDING STUDIO: SPECTACULAR SUSTAINABILITY The POST (Post Office Sustainable Tower) is a high rise residential building with 400 units on top of the historical San Diego Post Office.
PARTI/CONCEPT DIAGRAM
COMMUNITY Residents come together and form a community by enjoying a common space at every seventh floor that serves as both a structural diaphragm as well as a place for people to gather. This space leads up to seven levels of atrium for residents to engage with their neighbors and interact with the space.

SPECTACULAR SUSTAINABILITY Sustainable strategies include undulating balconies along the south facade. Units provide shade for units below without obstructing views. At every seventh floor units are omitted to provide cross ventilation and light into atrium spaces. At these levels there are green roofs that incorporate solar panels. The atrium space is clad with green walls inside and outside that helps the building become more efficient, filters storm water, reduces pollution, and aesthetically improves the intrinsic benefits of nature in the building. 03 AFFORDABLE HOUSING: PRACTICE STUDIO WITH GENSLER An affordable housing project in the Midway District of San Diego that engages users to participate in urban farming and go through a process for acclimating into society through job training and professional development. The studio was created to prepare IPAL students for professional practice by designing a project in collaboration with Gensler and Principals Darrel Fullbright and Steven Shinn.

THREE STEP STRATEGY Two other students decided on adjacent sites for this project. The overall strategy for all three sites is a three step approach, where residents receive individual, necessary healthcare, are then exposed to education, and subsequently are prepared with job training and development. This project has a focus on step three: job training and development. The projects were done separately, but with the others in mind and access points to the adjacent sites.

LARGE SCALE PROBLEM | SMALL SCALE SOLUTION JOB TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT: Each micro-community will provide professional skills paired with life skills training and job placement assistance. A SENSE OF BELONGING AND EMPOWERMENT AS COMMUNITY MEMBERS: Micro-communities are intended to give users a sense of place and belonging, increase self esteem, and build support networks. PRODUCTIVE, HEALTHY, MEANINGFUL: Each community has it’s own garden that will provide a source of healthy food and a meaningful form of work. At the ground level there is a shared community garden.

RISE Science Center is located at the public corner to engage community and provides an additional space for learning.
(EXPERIMENT)AL LEARNING The RISE Science Center occupies the main public corner and faces the future East Village Green Park. The Science Center is open to the public and provides an interactive, high sensory area for students. Play and tactile sensations enable sensory learning and creativity. The Science Center is equipped with a planetarium, water play area, soft play area, technology zone and more.

RISE Educational Village aims to provide children with special needs a place for education as well as a second home where they can reach independence through healthy, structured environments, such as nature and gardening. The two main stimuli zones, the sensory garden and gymnasium, have direct visual connections to the future East Village Green. This direct link to nature can improve health and increase learning.
An outdoor terrace for each classroom as well as a sensory garden at the ground level create a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor and allow a visual and direct link with nature. Oversized hallways that lead outside allow for accessibility as well as informal teaching to occur. Children can never feel lost in the continuous circulation, can tuck away into niches, or let out energy in these interstitial spaces that circle around to outside.
PRIVATE VIEW OF GARDEN
LAYERING OF SPACE For children who are sensitive to, or are distracted by environmental noises, acoustic design, colors, materials and a series of personal spaces are essential in the classroom. The classroom consists of a teaching area, a small group room shared with an adjacent classroom, a calming or one-on-one room, an elevated personal space with weighted blankets, and a technology area. Directly outside the classroom, children can store belongings as well as reflect in a personal niche space.

OWNERSHIP + FLEXIBILITY
The spectrum of special needs varies greatly, so every student will be accommodated according to his/her needs. A layering a spaces and different activities will make each child’s day unique. This individualized education approach will enhance social skills and help students reach independence.
Students are able to have a sense of ownership in the classroom. The flexibility of the space allows it to be customizable and rearranged for the individual student. Classroom learning and activities intend to minimize the sensory environment through muted colors, natural materials, sound acoustics, simple shapes, intimate spaces, and natural lighting.

05 BRIDGING THE GAP IN TIJUANA A pedestrian bridge and community center that includes shopping, cafes, a theater space, and more to engage commuters, locals and tourists alike at a major border crossing between San Ysidro and Tijuana.

08 CONCEPTUAL DESIGN PROJECT After a three week trip to Peru, the studio took place back in San Diego where the project consisted of a process of documentation through photographs, drawings, digital drawings, a model, and collages.
