Concept
For my Typography Book Jackets I chose three of the famous Jane Austens books; Emma, Sense & Sensibility and Pride & Prejudice. Austen is my favourite author and I have always been in love with the style of the Regency Period. I tried to incorporate different materials such as ribbon, doilies, pearls, flowers and tea leaves into my book covers as they reflect the period in which the books were written. The style I went for is also very girly and elegant as the books are love stories and aimed mostly at women and girls. I really enjoyed creating these books covers and I hope you like them too!

The process took a lot of time, effort and thinking, but I got there in the end. I had an idea of simple, modern looking book cover designs, using ribbon as my main medium. However, it didn’t go exactly according to plan, it was too simple and the ribbon didn’t vectorise as I hoped, so I decided to re-evaluate and think again.
“I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the COVER which look orBACK the words, laid the foundation. It design is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun...”

I decided to keep the simple colours and arrangement of the blurbs in my final designs but completely changed the front covers. I kept the vectorized ribbon typography and used them as reference for the arrangement of type on all covers. I experimented with different materials and made sure that everything related to the era. I played around with a range of colours and editing to ensure I got the best result. Even though the process took a lot of time I am satisfied with the end result. For most of them I arranged the letters and then took photographs, uploading and editing them in photoshop before creating the nets in Indesign. I decided to have hardcovers because I personally prefer hardcover books to read. The size will be in A5 as they will be easier to hold and put on the bookshelf.
Manifesto
For all three books I wanted them to be created using materials that were used at the time in which the books were written. I included materials such as ribbon, pearls, doilies, flowers and tea leaves. I decided to do all blurbs and spines the same style and changed the colours and front covers for each. All typography is in a scripted style that is inspired by Jane Austen font and Edwardian script. I arranged all letters with ribbon and vectorized them, using the style as a guide for the arrangement of the covers. Emma Emma is about a matchmaker who likes to set all her friends up. She is certain that she is quite capable being independent on her own without falling in love. I chose to reflect the feminity of Emmas character through maing the letters out of flowers arranged on a doily. I wanted it to be very simple and clean. I then photographed the arrangement and further edited on photoshop. This is most probably my favourite cover of the three as I like the simplicity of it. I chose purple as the blurb to match the colour of the flowers.
Sense & Sensibility This book is about two sisters looking for love that have completely different characters. I tried to reflect this through using two different techniques for both words, pearls and doilies. I decided to arrange both words in elegant scripted writing which I created myself, as it reflects the calligraphic style of the Regency Period. I also placed the materials on my brown wooden floor as wood has a natural vintage look about it and I wanted this as my background. I also used blue for the blurb because it is a soft colour that compliments the brown front cover. Pride & Prejudice This is my all-time favourite story. The protagonist in the story has prejudices against people and the rich and handsome Mr Darcy is full of pride. They learn to sort out their weaknesses and fall in love. I wanted to display the contrast between pride and prejudice through light and dark tones. I used tea leaves to create the word pride and stencilled out the word prejudice to put on top of a floral background. I made sure to keep them in the same scripted style of the period. There is mixture of colours, pink representing love, black representing hate and white representing hope. These are all themes in the books.
