I try as hard as I can to help others find a way to do what they love

4

JESSICA HISCHE

Jessica Hische grew up in Pennsylvania, raised by two non-creatives that decided it would be OK to let their little girl pursue a seemingly impractical career. She ended up attending a wonderful art school thanks to an amazing high school teacher and an admissions counselor that took a chance on her under-developed portfolio. Hische has been on her own as a letterer, illustrator, type designer, and relentless procrastiworker since 2009 and has worked for (and continue to work for a lot of wonderful clients like Wes Anderson and Penguin Books.) She states, “I love what I do for a living and try as hard as I can to help others find a way to do what they love.

‘Github Passion Projects’ “Julie Ann Horvath (art director) is a badass. She’s a lady who codes and sets up Passion Projects at Github, which is a series of talks by inspiring women. She asked me to help with the logo design and then later to brand a conference in a similar style and I was of course on board. I was happy to participate in the speaker series, and even stole a sparkly dress from the Github bathroom to wear during it.” - Jessica Hische.

BOBBY HAIQALSYAH

Bobsta14 is the alter ego of Bobby Haiqalsyah; a freelance graphic designer with a love of type and illustration. He became a chef for many years before hanging his knives and apron to focus on his graphic design career. He spent a few years in the branding, media, and advertising industry now settling in Melbourne. Haiqalsyah states, “Im now commonly found hustling type, connecting people and making things happen. The alias is there because it is easier to spell than his last name (pronounced: High Culture or something like that).

Melbourne “Knativo.co is an initiative that sources design by local artist and printer to create a unique design that signifies their cities. I was asked to create a design that signifies Melbourne which is known as the garden city and the home of Aussie rules football, I tried to convey that sense of a garden and the shape of a footy oval as the base of the design. - Bobby Haiqalsyah.

‘As Free As The Ocean’ Print “When I am lost or feel as though I need to let my mind wander, I go to the ocean. I hope to be as free spirited as the ocean and some how bottle that feeling and take it home. This is what this print is to me. This print is perfect for the home and workspace. This print has been created on 300-gsm white cotton paper stock.” - Jasmine Dowling.

SCOT T BIERSACK

Scott Biersack is a Letterer, Illustrator and Designer. He states, “If you know me well enough, you know that I can never stop creating. Once I start something, I have to finish it.” Biersack has a wide variety of passion projects that he constantly works on, such as Skate Letters & Chalkboard Saturday. He is a strong believer in the sayings “practice makes perfect” as well as “follow your bliss”. He says, “as cliché as they might sound, I have found from personal experience that anything is possible.” Through hard work, determination, and lack of sleep, he has truly grown to love what he does.

Monday Motivation “Every Monday, State Bicycle Co. shares on their social media what they like to call, “Monday Motivation”. Usually their motivation was some typeset wording overlaid on an image. I have been lucky enough to have designed their Monday Motivation pieces for a few months. Adding my hand-lettered touch, each piece is unique & handcrafted. Follow their social media outlets to get Monday Motivation for yourself !” - Scott Biersack.

A letter can go from contemporary to traditional or happy to sad in a single stroke

28

LUKE LUCAS

Luke Lucas is a freelance creative, art director, illustrator, designer and typographer living on the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia. He states, “I love that the same word, passage or even letter can be treated in bunch of different ways and embody entirely different meanings. That and through subtleties like a slight shift in line weight, the elongation of a tail or the arc you use, a letter can go from contemporary to traditional or happy to sad in a single stroke.” Typography isn’t the only thing that he does but it’s the type of work that he enjoys the most.

29

30

Lifelounge Luke Lucas is the Co Founder/Creative Director (1999-2011). Lifelouge has taken on many forms over the last 12 years but the fundamental values that they were bound by during my time there was the genuine desire to create and represent the kinds of things that people like ourselves can be entertained or inspired by. Among other things, through Lifelounge he created one of the longest serving online creative portals website, 14 editions of the contemporary culture print magazine Lifelounge (2005 - 2011) and a multi-award winning creative agency.

‘Bells

Whistles’

“This project is an ornate hand drawn lettering for New York based musician and producer ‘Blockhead’. It is designed in collaboration with illustrator Owen Brozman. I was asked to design the album title and artists name to be placed within the cover art. The design is based on an ornamental calligraphic script that was hand drawn in a circular composition. Flourishing has been utilised to balance and compliment the lettering.” - Andy Letherbridge

40

WINSTON SCULLY

Winston Scully classifies himself as a ‘Jesus-loving, beard-growing letterer and designer’ based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He has a passion for all things design, art, and tech. 42

Cascadia “Every time I create a piece of vector lettering, I print it out and check any irregularities. Cascadia is a fictional brand I developed for my senior project class, it is a local record store based in the pacific northwest. This is the logo design, though I was required to develop a full branding system with collateral, signage and packaging. - Winston Scully.

BOB EWING

Bob Ewing is a letterer and designer based in Indianapolis, IN. Ewing states, “I am blessed with a beautiful wife, who keeps the ground beneath me solid and beautiful daughter, who keeps me on my toes.” He took a roundabout path to design. After a 4 year stint in Ball State’s renowned architecture program, 2 years of being a commercial electrician and a year of being a trim carpenter in sunny Florida; he ended up at Ivy Tech’s Visual Communication program in Indianapolis. Ewing’s life path gives a completely unique and well-versed view on design. He also understands that design is not a career, it is a lifestyle. Ewing specialises in lettering, logo design, branding and illustration.

47

48

‘The Lit tle Things’ “This lettering piece was created for Chris Stegder’s To Resolve Project. ‘Enjoy the little things’, was my New Year’s Resolution for 2014. Remember to enjoy the little things in life this new year, these will be the things you will miss most when they are gone. Unplug and enjoy the people around you. This was my motto for 2014. Hopefully by having it as my iTelephone wallpaper, it will be a reminder every time I pick up my phone. ” - Bob Ewing.

53

54

‘We Cannot Not Change’ This artwork is a lettering piece inspired by Raquel Pelta’s talk, Spiekermann’s poster and Paul Watzlawick work. Through combining both ideas “Graphic design and typography for social change” and “One cannot not communicate,” it gave me the inspiration to create a piece based on the idea of ‘change.’ The first idea behind it is that in our physical human nature, (illustrated in the background) change is inevitable. The second concept, related to the world of ideas, is that change is an imperative to improve social conditions, create a sustainable living, respect nature as our own family and educate ourselves to reach awareness of our actions.” - Maria Montes.

Offscreen Magazine Coaster “Kai Brach the editor and designer behind Offscreen Magazine, a print magazine about the human side of websites and apps, commissioned me to create some beautiful lettering with the message ‘Coffee & Code‘ (nerds love that combo!) to go on a coaster as an insert into the magazines 6th issue. The lettering was printed on to 650gsm uncoated Les Naturals anthracite stock with white hot-foil-embossed lettering, and it looks and feels delicious.” - Carla Hackett.
