In 2014, many big challenges of Jesuit Mission in Cambodia began to take root while others came to fruition.

Jesuit Service Cambodia, for the very first time, commissioned a specialized group of development consultants to conduct an over-all program evaluation and organizational assessment. This gave us a good opportunity to look back and give thanks,

Also, the ‘Education Mission Leadership Team (EMLT)’ established their activities such as the ‘summer school’ and ‘kindergarten’ in DeiLo village smoothly. For the spiritual and intellectual apostolates, the foundational publications for the Ignatian spiritual direction ministry –The Spiritual Exercises and Autobiography of St. Ignatius– was finally translated to Khmer and published in Cambodia. Given all this, I’m very grateful to you all for the generous support you provide. This makes all our work possible. I see the Lord’s will in your generous support. Thank you very much.

Jesuit Mission in Cambodia

Jesuit Mission in Cambodia The beginning of the Jesuit mission to Cambodia dates back to 1980. Â From 1980 to 1990, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) was present among Cambodian refugees and displaced persons. They sought safety from the evils and devastation of war in the refugee camps on the Thai border while civil war continued to rage within Cambodia itself. In 1990, JRS signed an agreement with the Cambodian Ministry of Social Action and established an office in Phnom Penh. And it set out as Jesuit Mission to serve the poor of Cambodia. Jesuit Mission seeks to safeguard the rights and the future of the poor. Our desire is to continue to serve the most disadvantaged among the poor.

infrastructure development, health, and wheelchair since the beginning. The activities of JSC are divided into the Rural program - Metta Karuna - and the Special program. The Special program consists of Banteay Prieb, RDAS program, Ecology program, Ear clinic, Publishing Project, and Light of Mercy Home. JSC are present in 8 places: Phnom Penh, Kampong Thom, Siem Reap, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, and in the bordering provinces of Kampong Speu, Kampong Chnang and Kandal. Banteay Prieb, the vocational school for People with disability is located in Kandal district. Mekong Wheelchair and the office of Rural Development project which works with Farmer Solidarity and Khmer women Association in local communities are within Banteay Prieb compound.

JSC office in Banteay Meanchey is very active in its education projects. Since 2013, various new education projects have been conceived and established. ‘Children Tree Planting Project’ and ‘Radio Advocacy Project’ are some of projects already established.

Children Tree Planting Project Through this project, children are encouraged to plant trees in their school land. While children take care of the trees planted in groups and observe the trees are growing, they also learn environmental awareness, community spirit, a sense of accomplishment and biological knowledge. In this year, totally 137 trees have been planted by 685 children during 4 times tree planting activities. Everyday, during a break in the class, children in charge of watering rush to the trees. They water

19

the trees with inquisitive eyes. Children knows well about the trees they have planted and they take pride of their own trees. When asked, “Why this one is growing slower than the other trees?”, one child answered, “It will become a bigger tree at the end.”

Radio Campaign project JSC office in Banteay Meanchey runs a radio campaign for the community general education through the local radio. In 2014, the campaign was broadcasted 6 times. Each was about ‘mine awareness’, ‘women’ rights’, ‘children’s rights’, ‘environment’, ‘disability’, and ‘human rights’. Our radio program is aired Thursday in Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap and the north of Battambang.
