letter from the editor: jack malki While the past 15 months has brought with it many challenges and an upheaval of the goods and services market, one thing that is for certain is the importance of preserving good relationships with your customer base. Good customer service sits at the heart of our business. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Jet Technologies has strived to deliver an unrivalled level of customer service, which has been invaluable in supporting our customers during an incredibly challenging time – whether due to slow-downs or spikes in business brought about by the pandemic. While this commitment works both in favour of our customers and our business, achieving and maintaining good service throughout the pandemic was only possible by delivering on our core values – expertise, partnership, reliability, and trust. After 40 years as a leader in the printing and packaging industry, Jet Technologies’ dedication to providing support for its customers during the pandemic is testament to its resilience.

In March we hosted our Digital Innovations session, potentially the first face-to-face gathering of its kind in 2021 for the industry. The event showcased the recently launched Screen L350UV SAI S and hosted conversations around the growth of digital. It was great to see our customers, supply partners and media at the event. We are looking forward to having more such interactions in the coming months. We hope you enjoy reading this edition of Jet Life which also highlights our story of 40 years in the industry amongst other stories!

3 key COVID trends impacting industry Jet Technologies has revealed three key developing trends they have witnessed as a result of COVID-19, which are having an impact on, and changing the shape of, the printing industry into this year. The company says Just in Time (JIT), global supply chain constraints, and digital printing are the key trends to have emerged from COVID. Jack Malki, director, Jet Technologies says, “2020 was a really challenging year for so many businesses, including those in the printing and FMCG industries. There were a number of big shifts in the market, including changes in demand and challenges in the supply chain, which are having an ongoing impact as we move through 2021. “With a vaccine starting to roll out, this year brings a more positive outlook, however, we expect many of these changes will continue into the future.” The JIT trend in the FMCG industry, in which retailers have just the right amount of stock to fulfil orders, is not a new one. However, what Jet found new, was that throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, FMCG brands in Australia and overseas have been forced to optimise their operations and JIT because of the unprecedented spikes in demand in FMCG retail.

A good example is Jet Technologies’ customer, Natures

Throughout the spike in demand, Natures Organics had to work closely with suppliers to maintain the required production and supply levels required by major grocers, retailers, and consumers. Secondly, Malki has seen supply chain challenges impacting many businesses in Australia, including the printing and FMCG sectors, with the global pandemic and the US-China trade war, and these issues are ongoing. These challenges caused Australian businesses to experience massive delays and sharp cost increase in receiving supplies from overseas due to reduced international movement of goods with less air traffic. “These constraints have led to a rise in Australian businesses recalibrating and looking to onshore their supply chain,” Malki says. “This means local suppliers have seen rising demand, with an example being FMCG brands switching their label, packaging and ingredient needs to local suppliers where they can.” Finally, according to Malki, throughout the pandemic, digital printing has grown exponentially, and this is set to continue into the future. Internally, Jet’s supply volumes to its inkjet customers have more than doubled during this period. “This strong performance in digital printing is down to it being more flexible and having a higher productivity rate to help

turn around printing jobs faster, which is particularly important when printing labels for FMCG brands,” says Malki. For example, according to Jet, Sticky Labels – which supplies labels to Natures Organics – was able to quickly react to individual customer needs, such as sudden surges in demand, label changes or promotions, thanks to its recent investment in digital inkjet label printing. “Sticky Labels is able to deliver its FMCG customers high quality labels faster using the Screen GP L350UV digital label press,” Malki adds. “The L350UV is a reliable and flexible automated label production system, which has increased Sticky Labels’ efficiency and productivity.”

Jet Life | Issue 1 | 2021

“With so much uncertainty about future demand, FMCG brands can no longer plan three months out and are working within drastically smaller planning windows,” says Malki.

Organics, where in 2020, demand for its environmentally friendly personal care products surged 70 per cent during the pandemic.

Jet Technologies celebrates years of family success

Jet Technologies celebrates 40 years of service, innovation, and expertise in the Australian and global industrial printing and packaging industries

Jet Technologies is celebrating turning 40, continuing its legacy of providing stellar service, innovation, and expertise in the Australian and global industrial printing and packaging industries. Now a renowned Australian family-owned and operated business, Jet Technologies commemorates its 40-year history as a leading specialist importer and distributor of printing and packaging products.

Italian manufacturer of gravure printing presses, and from there grew the print division of the company.

“Jet Technologies is proud to be celebrating its 40th anniversary as a leader in the industry, and to be showcasing the hard work of its industry expert staff who continue to deliver their customers in Australia and globally, the knowledge and practical knowhow to provide premium quality products and outstanding service,” Jet Technologies director Jack Malki said.

Working originally from offices in Sydney’s Bondi Junction, the team quickly expanded, and in 2001 moved to a larger location in Alexandria and became Jet Technologies. With further growth, including the addition of new team members in South Australia, Victoria and New Zealand, Jet Technologies moved to even larger locations with warehouses in Mascot and then its current headquarters in Rosebery. The Rosebery site features a state-of-the-art demo centre and a purpose-built ink management facility. Jet Technologies now also has a state-of-the-art office-warehouse in Melbourne.

The story of Jet Technologies began when its managing director Albert Malki and his family made their journey from Italy to Australia back in 1980. When Albert and his family immigrated to Australia, hardly able to speak English, the landscape was vastly different, with difficulties faced in assimilating into the Australian culture. With this very obstacle in mind, Albert decided to start a company called Jet Overseas Trade to facilitate trade of a varied range of products between Australia and Europe. Industrial products were added over the years, including surfactants and aluminium. By the late 1980s, Amcor requested the assistance of Jet Overseas Trade in working with the Cerutti Group, an

“We pride ourselves on our strong family-based values, which we translate to our staff and our culture; investing in our staff to build long-lasting relationships with our customers, and striving to deliver genuine and expert service always,” Albert said.

“Today, we have grown and diversified significantly into the divisions of industrial, packaging, and printing – now employing over 70 staff and operating from locations across Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Singapore, alongside a range of leading supplier partners including Screen GP, Kocher + Beck, ESKO, Flexo Wash, Pulse Roll Label Products Ltd., Crown, Goglio, ILPRA, and LG,” Jet Technologies general manager Daniel Malki said. Albert continues to lead Jet Technologies and is supported by the second generation of the family business, with director Jack Malki and general manager Daniel Malki.

Jet Technologies’ Digital Innovations session a success Jet Technologies recently hosted a Digital Innovations session at its Sydney demonstration centre, bringing together prospective and existing customers, supply partners and media at the event. The Digital Innovations session, potentially the first face-to-face gathering of its kind in 2021 for the industry, showcased the recently launched Screen L350UV SAI S and hosted conversations around the growth of digital. The company’s director Jack Malki told Sprinter that the event was a success and he was glad that Jet Technologies facilitated an industry event for people to mingle again following COVID-19. “It has been an odd year and we’re excited to have any kind of event. It was very hard to know what to expect in terms of numbers and attendance, because people in other states are still a bit twitchy about travel. We in NSW are very comfortable about attending events locally, so a lot of our attendees have been local,” he said. “We didn’t have as many interstate visitors as we

would have liked but given the situation, we are thrilled to have the number of visitors that we’ve had. It’s also the first face-to-face event for our industry for the year and we’re just thrilled with that. I think everyone was happy to be here as well. “It’s just the start to having more ‘normal’ situations in future.” At the event, Malki also gave a rundown of the company’s relationship with Screen, which has been ongoing for the last 12 years. “We’ve had a relationship with Screen that branches beyond the team here in Australia. We also have a relationship with the team in Japan. Screen has a solid, reliable team and without them, this partnership wouldn’t have worked,” Malki said. “Whoever has a Screen machine knows that they are always a call away and they are there whenever needed. They have so many areas of great expertise and a very strong global presence.” Malki also spoke about some recent trends he has noticed in the digital and packaging industries.

“Labels and packaging has grown year-onyear and that’s quite impressive. It is in a better position than some other markets. In terms of digital and inkjet, we have seen it grow by more than two times in terms of square metres,” he said.

L350UV SAI S has jumped by 20 per cent in colour printing from the past model (regardless of number of colours, repeat or otherwise) and 67 per cent with its highest opacity white – going from 30m/min to 50m/ min in all instances.

“At the moment, we’re also seeing some great supply chain disruptions, resulting in challenges in getting things out of Asia in the same sort of way or cost as before. And with consumers demanding solutions ‘now’, inkjet has been on the rise locally.

The addition of orange and blue to the current configuration, along with CGS colour matching using CxF data, enables printers to achieve an extremely wide range of the colour gamut, with extremely high levels of repeatability. The extra colours also provide a noticeable ink saving.

“So, I think we’re going to see increased growth in packaging and exponential growth in digital packaging. With the new Screen L350UV SAI S press, we’re able to do a lot of things on a lot of different materials successfully – this is a machine that is going to last many years.” Screen GP managing director Peter Scott provided more detail around the Screen L350UV SAI S press, saying that “it stands for being colourful, providing stability, ensuring accuracy, and integration, resulting in a flexibility to meet the demands of today”.

According to Screen and Jet Technologies, productivity with the

The L350UV SAI S is also able to print on an extremely wide range of local and imported materials. The companies mentioned that the current installations in Australia and New Zealand report uptime in the range of 92 to 97 per cent, including the oldest installations that are approaching five years. At the event, the companies also mentioned that the L350UV SAI S unit they had at the Digital Innovations session has been sold, with more details around this announced at a later date.
