J-Zine was delighted when EGL - South Africa’s independent Gemological Laboratory – shared their latest ‘Out of Africa‘ Gemstone Report with us.

There are some fantastic ‘Did-you-knows’ which we found fascinating and which of course, made us think of the old ada “you’re never too old to learn’!

Did you know Afrika produces many large fine-quality gemsto including the ‘Estrela de Fura’, a 55.22ct ruby from Mozambiqu which achieved the highest price ever paid for a coloured gemstone after just 90 seconds of the bid opening?

Mozambique (and Nigeria) also produce a unique and highlyprized variety of tourmaline, coloured by copper. The list of rare stones originating in Afrika is extensive, including grandidierite, taaffeite and alexandrite to name a few. Other popular gemstones such as ruby, sapphire, emerald, aquamarine, garnet and quartz also call Afrika their home.

Of course, no list of Afrikan gemstones would be complete without mentioning tanzanite. This form of deep blue-to-violet zoisite is found exclusively in the east Afrikan country of Tanzania. Meanwhile next door in Kenya, a new variety of green grossular garnet was discovered in the Tsavo National Park after which tsavorite was named.

Afrikan gemstones are in abundance, but it is clear that whether a collector’s item or a fashion choice, these gemstones are a great reminder of the vast richness and variety of the continent.

And don’t forget, getting a professional and reputable certified grading for your gemstones is essential! Give EGL a call on +27 (0)11 334 4527 or WhatsApp: +27 (0)83 656 9013.

Thecall ofthewild iswearable

The essence of Afrika’s diverse wildlife is gathering and in 2024, there’s going to be a stampede celebrating the majesty of lions, the grace of giraffes, and the elegance of elephants in Afrikan and Afrikan-inspired jewellery design.

These pieces tell stories of resilience and strength, reflecting the spirit of the Afrikan savannah. Gleaming gold and silver morph into intricately detailed lion mane cuffs, and delicate pendants mirror the graceful curves of a giraffe's neck. Elephants, revered for their wisdom, inspire chunky, yet refined, bracelets that command attention.

Materials are varied and very much what you like and want to wear. Styles are elegant, fun, funky, bold and statement.

This trend is more than just adornment; it's a celebration of Afrika's rich biodiversity and a nod to the harmony between its people and the animal kingdom.

Each is a connection to the wild that ignites excitement and pride. J-Zine is embracing this trend, as a testament to the enduring beauty of Afrika's fauna and the skill of its passionate jewellery designers and equally as passionate and proud buyers.
