Ultimate Goal: Prevent glove box safety incidents by encouraging a collaborative, team-focused and open approach to dealing with contamination issues.

Intervention #1

Standards & Procedures Guide Summary This intervention is designed to provide everyone in the lab including the supervisory members and glove box performers with a centralized point of reference. Such a document is intended to help performers to more accurately diagnosis, correct, and report glove box contamination issues and once developed should be provided to all group members and updated yearly. It will be developed in conjunction with the glove box heads and highlight the importance of team-work in dealing with issues related to contamination.

Notes on Delivery A printed book that is easy to access and carry in the lab will provide performers with a useful resource. Given the prevalence of cell phones in the lab, a copy of this document in blog format would be equally as easy to access and would reduce printing costs and prevent lost guides. In order to ensure that those without cell phones have easy access to the guide, both a printed and digital copy should be developed. Print Advantages: ◊ Easy to carry ◊ Easy physical access

Print Disadvantages: ◊ Poor Durability ◊ Easy to lose ◊ Easy to spill on

Mobile Advantages: ◊ Easy to carry ◊ Easy physical access ◊ Difficult to lose Mobile Disadvantages: ◊ Not all staff carry a cell phone ◊ Connectivity issues

A Diagnose glove box contamination cooperatively. B Correct glove box contamination using teamwork. C Report contamination experiences openly.

Intervention #2

Contamination Support System Summary For novice performers expected to adjust to regularly working in the glove box environment, contamination issues can be daunting. This intervention includes a graphic computer-based support aid that will be designed to be used collaboratively with a senior lab member. It will involve a decision making process that outlines possible errors, diagnoses, and eventual corrections that will need to be confirmed by a supervisor. This will be a useful tool for encouraging a collaborative and team-focused diagnosis and reporting process and developed with the aid of the glove box heads.

Notes on Delivery Computer-based technologies allow for the integration of detailed graphics and multiple hyperlinks that can guide the user through the process of making complex decisions. All of the lab members currently have laptops that they use on a daily basis, in addition to the two communal computers that are available for usage, which will allow for easy access to the system. Online Advantages: ◊ Allows for video, sound, images, and hyperlinks ◊ Allows for high degree of interactivity ◊ Able to guide the user through different scenarios Online Disadvantages: ◊ Connectivity issues ◊ Time intensive development

Intervention #3 Coaching Training Summary For this intervention it is recommended that the supervisory staff take part in an online course on topics related to coaching and supporting performers. Currently, the glove box heads have received limited formal or informal training in this area. An up to date course on transformative leadership should serve this population well and ensure that intervention 4 (Coaching Program) is well supported.

Notes on Delivery

Performance Need  Knowledge & Skills

Due to limited resources and the small size of the management a seminar available online would be the most feasible option for a single research group. In the event that more research groups sign on to the program, a formal chemistry program could be developed in a face to face setting or online setting

Target Audience  Glove Box Supervisors  Group Professor

Online Course Advantages ◊ Reduced overall cost ◊ Can be accessed at different times throughout the year Online Course Disadvantages ◊ Will only target general leadership skills ◊ May be difficult to transfer skills to the particular lab context

Stage  Before full implementation of the campaign Medium (Form)  Online (Outsourced Class) Style  Interactive  Illustrative  Focus on transformative leadership

D Recognize the benefit of cooperation, teamwork and openness in reducing safety incidents.

Intervention #4 Coaching program program Summary This intervention will include a formalized system for novice level performance to communicate with a supervisor about their work in the glove box and issues that may have arisen with regards to contamination. Furthermore, supervisors will provide constructive mentorship and feedback with regards to procedures and standards and identify ongoing bottlenecks that arise Meeting agendas, checklists, and schedules will be developed to be administered in face-to-face meetings. The coaching academic literature and white papers will be utilized during development.

Notes on Delivery In person meetings will take place in several settings: the glove box working space, conference rooms and the group office space. A coaching guide book with be created to be used in these sessions and to track the progress of the program. In Person Advantages: ◊ Personal ◊ Rapid Communicative ◊ Opportunities to ask questions

Print Advantages: ◊ Long term record ◊ Can be detailed ◊ Facilitates a formal processes

In Person Disadvantages: ◊ Hard to capture the entire interaction ◊ Hard to substantiate in the event of a conflict

Print Disadvantages: ◊ Easy to spill on ◊ Easy to lose ◊ Confidentiality issues can arise if not stored properly

A Diagnose glove box contamination cooperatively. B Correct glove box contamination using teamwork. C Report contamination experiences openly. D Recognize the benefit of cooperation, teamwork and openness in reducing safety incidents.

Intervention #5 Viral Campaign Summary In light of the fact that all of the group membersʼ research depends on the health of the glove box a visible campaign that addresses the importance of working in a team-focused environment will be developed with both print-based media posted in the lab and videos posted online. The campaign will use strong imagery to personalize the issue of contamination and to promote a team-focused approach to dealing with it. Metaphors will be used comparing glove box contamination with the common cold as cold contraction and glove box contamination follow similar paths. Furthermore, cold and flu advertising is a well established genre.

Notes on Delivery Print based media can be easily posted in high traffic areas for the biggest impact and to reduce costs; furthermore, online videos available in a centralized location (e.g. on the same website as interventions 1 and 2) will employ a cohesive and single point of reference. Print Advantages: ◊ Can be posted in high traffic areas Print Disadvantages: ◊ Poor durability ◊ Easy to deface ◊ Printing costs ◊ Poor interactivity

Online Advantages: ◊ Can showcase the whole campaign and link to other interventions Online Disadvantages: ◊ Connectivity issues

Intervention #6 Team Progress award program Summary This intervention is intended to reward good performance and to promote a collaborative and team-focused perspective of success. Research performance is inherently linked to glove box performance, and given that all members of the group use and maintain the glove box a team-focused approach is imperative for success. Each time the group maintains glove box conditions for a four month consecutive period a group event to celebrate will occur. In order to determine this supervisors will use information from the coaching program and their own glove box maintenance.

Notes on Delivery Upon completion of the target, the glove box supervisors will send out a survey asking the glove box teams what activities they would like to participate in. A limited budget will be in place for this outing so the options will reflect this. A small trophy can be used to document each time the standard is met. In Person Advantages: ◊ Personalized ◊ Community building In Person Disadvantages: ◊ Potential for interpersonal conflict ◊ Different personal preferences and cultural values (e.g. drinking alcohol) can make it difficult to reach a consensus on an appropriate event
