O1O1 SOAR To celebrate the beginning of 2017, the year of rooster. The golden feather not only represents rooster, but also pays homage to Alexander McQueen, the documentary “Savage Beauty was the inspiration for this design. A master of his own crafts, McQueen is so focused and determinant to perfects his artistry, that it almost became an obsession. McQueen is an inspiration to all designers, with this design I wish we could all soar.
O1O8 Watercolor The combination of watercolor sketches for a design at work. I spent a week doing watercolors at work, which made me feel like a design student back in school again. The colors and abstract patterns are meant to represent the four seasons.
O115 Unapologetic Inspired by the movie “La La Land” and my recent favorite word of that week “unapologetic”. I wanted to capture the Hollywood glamour and also the spirit of the relentless artist. Artistically speaking when one thinks of the word Unapologetic one would think it's bold and harsh, but I wanted to play with the contrast so I used hand drawn script and almost fluent-like font on the word Unapologetic, to play with the irony. And also to send the message that designers and all types of dreamers often are not taken seriously, we live in our own world of colors and doodles, but we are unapologetic about it, because we know how much work we put into it every day.
O122 Lines A study of lines, and how the movement of lines can form something entirely different and even arise emotions.
O129 NEW This is a practice on typography and calligraphy, and to celebrate the beginning of lunar new year. Usually posters for Chinese New Year would use words like " 福 "(Joy) or " 春 "(Spring), but I wanted to design a new concept. I wrote the Chinese word for "New" in calligraphy which is " 新 ", but hid the number 2017 inside the character. Therefore this poster only has one Chinese word on it, but it symbolizes the beginning of a new year: 2017.
O2O5 Flying Over I am a big fan of movies such as “Interstellar” and “The Martian”. Not only because of the space travel aspect, but mostly because of the beauty they captured. One thing I’m particular drawn to is the spacecraft centrifuge. I am a beginner to 3D modeling, but I knew one of the first thing I wanted to create in 3D is a simplified/abstract version of the spacecraft centrifuge.
O219 Line Gradient Originally designed as the pattern for a hotel project carpet, then it became an obsessive study of lines. Creating a pattern using only lines: different length, different thickness, and different colors.
O226 MORE A combination of designs I did in the past (pattern design, print design, etc.), I used them to practice my 3D modeling skills. Together they form the word “MORE, symbolizing my goal for this year: to do more, to learn more, and to achieve more.
O312 Line Study Part III of the line study. This time I attempt to create depth using lines. I have always been fascinated with contour lines since I was a kid in school. This is my version of a contour map.
O326 Grid A design inspired by Bradley G Munkowitz's UI work for the movie “Oblivion. Being in an interior design firm, I'm surrounded by these beautiful and complex construction drawings. As a person who is obsessed with grids and alignments, I decided to design a poster covered in all types of grid system and obsessive alignments. At the same time pay homage to Bradley G Munkowitz.
O423 Probability A celebration of probability and a nod to the movie “The Imitation Game. I have never been a religious person, but I believe strongly in probability. The chance of me doing something at a particular moment which lead me to my next action and set a chain of reactions in motion. I selected the inner dots and the outer dots within each circle randomly. What are the odds of two circles being completely identical.
O43O Wired This is part II of the grid exercise; in this design I took the grid system further by adding curve lines form by 1/2 or 1/4 of a circle. After I mapped out the line and dot grid, I connected the circles with these wire-like curves. The result was this machine-like pattern, like the motherboard of a complex machinery. The result is a ripple like pattern, similar to the organic flow of a river. Or if one looks at it long enough, one can maps out the resemblance of a haloed deity figure. As a designer, lines, shapes, and patterns are my belief.
O528 Make A Wish My first attempt to draw something in this scale, at the same time I challenged myself to practice handdrawn typography.
O7 O 9 Designer Cube I began the process by designing a series of icons and patterns for six different aspects of the interior design industry: Design / Construction / Sustainable Design / Material and Textile / Air Purification / Electric Mechanic Then I placed one icon on each surface of the cube; it now works like a customized dice for designers. With this Designer Cube, one can create limitless pattern combination by placing different icons next to one another. It also serves as a symbol that each aspect of design is just as important as the other.
O716 FLOW A practice on signage design with glass and neon lights. The construction part of the design may be a little unrealistic; the entire structure is held together by glass boxes and metal bars only. But the main propose of this project is to practice signage lighting effect and camera angles; how to create architectural signage with unconventional structure.
O917 One Man CafĂŠ It began as a practice on 3D modeling and attempt to create a platform for a cafĂŠ branding design. It then quickly evolves into something a lot more complex. The project became an appreciation towards interior design and the demonstration of how complicated the art of branding really is. *All furniture and decorative objects (coffee cup, plants, etc.) are resources from the 3D Warehouse.
1OO8 Moon A design practice on package design for Moon Cake during the Moon Festival. The golden moon cake inside the dark gray package resembles the yellow moon in the night sky. The cut-out of the box is actually rabbit silhouettes (symbolic animal of the Moon Festival), and the sliver icons on the box are moon cycle.
1225 Golden Wreath I started off this year with golden feather design symbolizing the year of rooster. It’s only fitting that I end this year with golden feathers. This is the 3D model of the golden wreath motif I designed for my company’s Christmas Card. The design also celebrates the company’s 45th anniversary. I choose to use the 3D model instead of the actual card design to represent the end of this year because one of my major achievements of this year is that I finally step into the world of 3D digital art. I want this design journal to not only serves as a design diary, but also to mark my progress of this year, from the beginning to the end.
