hilanthropy has always been a central element in Suzy Ettinger’s life. At a very young age, Suzy’s parents instilled in her the importance of giving back. As a young girl, Suzy and her twin sister Sally volunteered at Mt. Sinai Hospital. “I’ve been giving back to the community all of my life,” said Suzy. “It has been extremely rewarding.”

Suzy first started her involvement with the Jewish Home and Care Center after receiving a call from Nita Corré. “I remember when Nita called me about serving on the board of directors, and I saw it as the perfect opportunity to begin my involvement with the community,” she said. That phone call took place over twenty years ago, and Suzy has maintained a strong presence in our communities ever since. Suzy said, “I’ve so enjoyed my many years of participating with the organizations and the people here.” Suzy’s passionate involvement extends well beyond our communities. She currently sits on nine boards

Sarah Chudnow Community Celebrates Ten Years of Senior Living in Mequon Gala Event Draws Capacity Crowd

Schultz, Administrator, Sarah Chudnow Community Like a beautiful piece of artwork that has stood the test of time, the Sarah Chudnow Community presented itself in classic style during the tenth year anniversary celebration held on Wednesday, August 19, 2015. Paul J. Schultz, Administrator and Executive Director of the Sarah Chudnow Community (SCC), greeted many of the guests and residents as they entered. Guests enjoyed a variety of beverages and a wide selection of expertly prepared hors d’oeuvres prepared by SCC’s own dining staff. Entertainment was supplied by the well-known musical headliner The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band, who had many guests dancing and singing along throughout the event. An impromptu rendition of “Happy Birthday” featuring Cantor Jeff Conn, Rehab Admissions Coordinator Larry Ladin and former Chairman of the Board Daniel Chudnow was also a highlight. The three-hour event was held in Posner Town Square located in the heart of the facility. The celebration was attended by SCC residents and their family members, staff, board members and members of the surrounding community. Memory Café Grand Opening

The Adult Day Center celebrated the grand opening of the Memory Café with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Pitch’s Express restaurant in the McKinley Marina Round House on Wednesday, August 26. Chai Point Senior Living Director Debbie Rosenthal Zemel led the event, and former Governor Martin Schreiber spoke energetically about his enthusiasm for the Memory Café. Television’s Fox 6 News covered the event.

ReCharge! ReCharge! is an interactive brain and body fitness class. It is an opportunity to engage in brain exercises that can help improve memory, focus and concentration among friends. Studies suggest that the more mentally active people are throughout their lifetimes, the stronger the connections are between brain cells. Controlled lifestyle choices, regular physical and mental fitness exercise have a direct effect on the brain.

A Memory Café is a social gathering place for persons with early-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease and their families, friends, and caregivers. Memory Cafés began in the United Kingdom. They offer opportunities for socialization to people with memory loss and their family care partners and friends. The idea for the Memory Café has gained much traction in the United States in recent years, so that there are now over 100 cafés in cities and towns across the nation with 18 in metro Milwaukee. The Memory Cafés are part of a current movement towards dementia-friendly and dementia-capable communities. “People tend to isolate themselves in their homes, and their world narrows,” explains Dana RubinWinkelman, social worker at Chai Point. “This makes it so difficult for people to socialize, and it makes them depressed. SCC not only celebrated its 10-year anniversary, but also had the privilege of honoring the residents who live here, with special recognition for two residents, Ann Sherman and Jean Weinberg, who have been with us since the doors opened back in February of 2005!

with a special place where they’re making a connection with others, which is so important for mental health and well-being.” The Adult Day Center Memory Café is being held at Pitch’s Express restaurant on the beautiful McKinley Marina on the third Wednesday of each month, April through October, and at Miss Katie’s Diner in the winter months. The spaces at Pitch’s Express restaurant and Miss Katie’s Diner were generously donated by an Adult Day Center family member.

Partners in our Memory Café initiative include Milwaukee County Parks, the Alzheimer’s Association, the Aging Disability and Resource Center and the Milwaukee County Department on Aging. “This all goes along with our mission, which is to wrap our arms around participants and family members,” said Dana. “We’re truly taking care of the whole person. We offer so much to the community. We have ReCharge! and the Adult Day Center, we have the SPARK program, and more. We exist to build kehilla [community].” The Adult Day Center Memory Café serves as a wonderful stepping stone for individuals with memory loss to get connected early with our organization and develop relationships before a crisis occurs, ensuring a smoother journey.
