Meet Adela Raicu, Our Student Volunteer Liaison Adela Raicu is the Student Volunteer Liaison for our three communities. Here, she gives us insight on her background, her volunteer experience and the new student volunteer position. Facts about Adela: • I was born in Bucharest, Romania. • I absolutely love traveling: I have lived in three other countries including Romania, Japan and Canada. I have traveled to many other places, but my favorite has been Israel. I think traveling to different places from a young age has greatly impacted who I am as a person and I love learning about different cultures and people.

• I have 5 siblings, all of them girls, and I am the third oldest. • English is my third language, after Romanian and Japanese. I can also speak French, and understand Spanish. • I went to Shorewood High School, where I was on the tennis, gymnastics and track team. • I go to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where I am a sophomore and study psychology. Volunteer Experience at JHCC: • This is my second year as a Bonner AmeriCorps Leader at UWM, and I complete 300 hours of service at various sites, yearly. I am doing most of my service here at the JHCC this year, and hope to continue next year as well. See “Meet Adela,” page 2 Volunteer Venue | Spring 2015 | page 1

Meet Adela continued from page 1

• I began volunteering here my sophomore year of high school. I enjoy doing friendly visits with the residents, and helping Beth out in her office. Also, I have been on various outings with residents that I have enjoyed, such as the zoo. As Volunteer Liaison: • I recruit volunteers as well as make our new and current volunteers comfortable. I assist Beth Draper, volunteer coordinator, with assembling orientation materials and organizing volunteer information. • Part of my job as the Volunteer Liaison is to be a resource for volunteers if they have any questions about anything.

Student Volunteer Social To celebrate the hard work of our student volunteers, and to welcome new volunteers to the JHCC, Beth and Adela planned an event that would serve as a meet and greet for student volunteers. It is important for volunteers to know one another, as well as staff, on a more personal level in order for them to feel comfortable and enjoy doing service here.

The student volunteer social took place on Sunday, February 15, in the Rubenstein Pavilion and included several activities. The afternoon began with short speeches, continued with an icebreaker to give the volunteers an opportunity to socialize, and showed the volunteer video that described opportunities for volunteers. There were refreshments, pizza, and an ice cream sundae bar, followed by a raffle. A great time was had by all who attended! Look for another student volunteer social in the future.
