SEASON OUTLOOK The George Washington men’s soccer program celebrates three of the best teams in its 43-year history in 2009. It has been 35 years since coach Georges Edeline took the Colonials to their first NCAA Tournament in 1974; 20 years since George Lidster led GW to a school-record 14 wins and its first NCAA Tournament victory in 1989; and five years since the 2004 team rebounded from a 1-8-3 start to win the Atlantic 10 Championship and upset North Carolina to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The 2009 Colonials are looking to make history of their own during this year of anniversaries and with nine starters, 10 seniors and 22 letterwinners returning, they have the experience and leadership needed to produce a special season in Foggy Bottom. Last fall, GW came achingly close to qualifying for its first A-10 Championship since capturing the 2004 crown, allowing a go-ahead goal in the final 15 minutes of its regular-season finale to lose the point needed to advance. This year’s senior-laden team, according to Lidster, is “hungry and wants to go further.” That hunger translated into a solid Spring 2009 season in which the Colonials went undefeated over a five-game schedule that featured the likes of NCAA Tournament participants George Mason and Loyola (MD) and local professional side Real Maryland.

FOR WARDS With nearly 90 percent of its goals (32-of-36) and points (86-of-99) returning, GW will boast one of the A-10’s and NCAA’s most potent attacks this fall. The Colonials finished second in the conference and seventh in Division I with a 2.12 goals-per-game average in 2008. Senior All-America candidate Andy Stadler spearheaded the offensive outburst last season, racking up 14 goals and 31 points, tied for eighth-most in program history, en route to being named First Team All-Atlantic 10 and First Team All-Middle Atlantic Region, the first

Colonial to receive the honor since All-American Mario Lone in 1989. Stadler tied for third and fifth in the nation in goals and points per game, respectively, in 2008 to move into 10th place on GW’s career goals (22) and points (57) lists. A similar spectacular season could put Stadler among the program’s top five all-time scorers and would likely spell team success for GW in 2009. Assisting Stadler up top is reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Conference pick Yoni Berhanu. Berhanu finished third on the team with four goals and 11 points during an impressive debut season in which he was also named to College Soccer News’ Freshman All-America Second Team. Redshirt senior Mike Rollings returned to the form that saw him earn A-10 All-Rookie Team honors in 2005, equaling his career-high with nine points on three goals and three assists last season. Junior Steve Wujek, who provided two goals off the bench in 2008, Stadler, Berhanu and Rollings combined for 23 of GW’s 36 goals and comprise four of GW’s top seven returning scorers. Sophomore Aldin Dervisevic saw time in just one match last fall, but gained added experience during the spring season. Freshman Seth Rudolph, an Illinois All-State selection, totaled a Belleville West Highrecord 23 goals in 2008 to finish his four-year career with 53 tallies.

2009 Colonials Men’s Soccer

The Colonials will be most experienced across the middle of the pitch with five senior midfielders anchoring the position this fall. Seniors Erick Perez-Segnini, Kyle Albrecht, Luke Wildy, Mike Briscoe and Andrew Kroculick have all been battle-tested the past three years and should prove to be one of the top midfield corps in the A-10 in 2009. Perez-Segnini was recognized for a solid 2008 campaign with A-10 honorable mention All-Conference accolades after finishing second on the team with five goals and 12 points. Perez-Segnini and Kroculick, who added a goal and an assist in 13 matches last season, will control the flanks.

SEASON OUTLOOK Wildy, Albrecht and Briscoe return to patrol the central midfield after combining for eight assists last fall. Wildy and Albrecht are excellent distributors and provide a more offensive look, while Briscoe gives a defensive presence to the middle. Redshirt junior Will Doar and junior Marcus Ranney supply Lidster with added size and work-rate at wide midfield. Freshman Mattia Melillo, a First Team All-Maryland and Washington Post All-Met selection, should bring a scoring mindset to the midfield. He totaled 48 goals during his scholastic career at Walkersville High, including 14 while earning area Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2008.

der to see Division I action after playing 34 minutes in 2008, while redshirt sophomore Erik Haug has spent his first two seasons training. Heralded rookie Brendan Lafferty could prove to be the solution. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound freshman was named to the A-10 Preseason AllRookie Team and is among College Soccer News’ “100 Freshmen to Keep an Eye On in 2009.” Lafferty earned NSCAA/adidas Youth AllAmerica and USSF Northeast Starting XI honors as a member of the Albertson Soccer Club (NY) in 2008.

HEAD COACH GEORGE LIDSTER eorge Lidster, the winningest coach in the 44-year history of GW men’s soccer, is in his 22nd season at the helm of the Colonials program. Lidster posted his 12th winning season as GW head coach with an 8-6-3 mark in 2008. In 21 seasons, Lidster has amassed a school record 178 victories and boasts a career mark of 178-167-49 (.514). Under Lidster’s direction, the Colonials have made three trips to the NCAA Tournament (1989, 2002, 2004) and 10 Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament appearances, including winning league tournament titles in 2002 and 2004, and the 1992 regular-season championship. In 1989, he led GW to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and a team-record 14 victories, including a 3-1 decision against George Mason on Nov. 11, 1989, which marked the program’s first NCAA tournament triumph. Fifteen years later in 2004, Lidster guided the Colonials to their second NCAA victory, a 1-0 upset at North Carolina in the first round, and an improbable 10-9-4 record after starting the season 1-8-3. Lidster has been named the Atlantic 10 Coach of Year twice. He was recognized for the first time after the team’s highly successful 1989 campaign — his third season at the helm of the program — and he earned co-Coach of the Year laurels after leading GW to its first regular-season A-10 title in 1992. In addition to his conference honors, Lidster was named the NCAA South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 1987, his first season in Foggy Bottom, after piloting the Colonials to a 10-5-3 overall record. He was one of only eight regional coaches selected nationwide. Early in his stint at GW, Lidster mentored two-time All-American Mario Lone, and had three of his players earn Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honors (Kenny Emson in 1987, Lone in 1989 and 1991, and Marcelo Valencia in 1992). In addition, 21 players have earned a total of 37 all-conference accolades and nine players have earned A-10 all-rookie honors on his watch. Many of Lidster’s charges have also been recognized on the regional level, including Lone, Valencia, Ben Ferry — who owns the NCAA single-season assist record (24 in 1997) — Matt Osborne and most recently, Andy Stadler, who earned first-team NSCAA Middle Atlantic AllRegion honors in 2008. In addition to their on-the-field success, the Colonials also have been successful in the classroom under Lidster. His 2002 squad earned the prestigious NSCAA Academic Team Award for exceptional academic performance and the program has earned the NCAA’s Public Recognition Award for Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in both 2007 and 2008. In 2002, Matt Osborne was named Verizon’s Academic All-America Player of the Year for men’s soccer. In 21 seasons, Lidster has had 26 players earn A-10 Academic All-Conference recognition. Lidster began his coaching career in 1984 as an assistant coach under the late Gordon Bradley at George Mason and helped the Patriots reach three NCAA tournaments before taking the reins at GW in 1987. A native of Durham, England, Lidster began his playing career with Newcastle United and Darlington FC before attending Loughborough University, where he received a teaching certificate in physical education in 1975. Lidster moved to the United States and received a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1984 from the University of Illinois-

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH MIKE MADIGAN

Craig Jones, four-year letterwinner for the Colonials from 1995-98 and volunteer assistant coach the past seven seasons, is in his first season as the team’s top assistant after being promoted in June. “Craig is a highly qualified, innovative coach with strong ties to the local soccer community,” said head coach George Lidster. “His experience and knowledge of the game will add another dimension to our program.” In addition to Jones’ current duties in training and game management, he will assist Lidster with recruiting, scheduling and goalkeeper workouts. Jones was named 2008 Virginia Youth Soccer Association Boys Competitive Coach of the Year after leading his Virginia 1992 team to the title game of that year’s ODP National Championship. Along with his work at GW and VYSA, Jones also serves as the Boys Development Academy Director for the DC Stoddert Soccer Club in Washington, DC. His responsibilities include coordinating training services and designing age appropriate curriculums for year-round soccer training programs. Jones holds a USSF ’A’ Coaching License and is currently a staff coach for the Region I Olympic Development Program and the Virginia State ODP program where his team recently finished runner-up at the US Youth Soccer ODP National Championships. Jones also is a Virginia State Education instructor, teaching license courses to soccer coaches in Virginia and the District. He has served as the director of numerous college and residential summer soccer programs in both the U.S. and Europe and is the founder of the DC Soccer School, which offers soccer services to youth players in the metropolitan area. Jones earned a UEFA License in 1998 and a NSCAA National Diploma in 2003. Jones played and captained the Wales National Youth Team prior to his four-year career at GW. He started all but one of his 63 matches played, totaling 28 points on 12 goals and four assists. Following his collegiate career, Jones competed semi-professionally in England and Wales before returning stateside to pursue his coaching licenses. The Wales native graduated with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from the University in 1999 and currently resides in Washington, DC.

Mike Madigan is in his first season as a volunteer assistant coach in charge of goalkeepers on head coach George Lidster’s staff. 2009 Colonials Men’s Soccer

George Washington Athletic Hall of Fame GEORGES EDELINE Georges Edeline was inducted into the George Washington Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988 in recognition for an outstanding career as a Colonials soccer player. The native of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, played for the Colonials from 1967-70, captained the squad in 1970, and was twice voted team MVP. Edeline was named coach in 1973, a post he held for nine seasons, compiling a 70-39-9 record. Three of the teams he coached participated in NCAA postseason competition. He was the first GW soccer player to enter the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

DR. PATRICK FASUSI Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000, Dr. Patrick Fasusi, a native of Lagos, Nigeria, was an outstanding soccer player at GW for four seasons (1974-77). A center forward and sweeper for the Colonials, he was a four-time All-South selection by members of the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America. Fasusi played on two NCAA tournament teams (1974 and 1977) in his four-year career. Fasusi was the team’s MVP in both his junior and senior seasons, and was the first soccer player to earn the University’s Outstanding Men’s Senior Athlete award in 1978.

KENNY EMSON Kenny Emson, inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998, won four letters in soccer (1985-88) and captained the Colonials team in 1987 and 1988. The Worcester, England, native played midfield at GW and earned the Most Valuable Player honors in men’s soccer in both 1986 and 1987. His career points (69) and goals (27) rank him sixth and seventh, respectively, on GW’s all-time lists while he also ranks ninth in career assists with 15.

DERYA YAVALAR Derya Yavalar was a standout in all four seasons he donned the Buff and Blue (197275). Inducted in 1997, Yavalar still ranks third all-time in career goals with 34, and holds a record for most goals scored in one match with five, a mark that has stood the test of time for close to 30 years. Yavalar, a native of Izmit, Turkey, also ranks fourth all-time in total points with 80. He was a key factor in the Colonials earning their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in 1974. He scored 15 goals in 11 matches and was 28th in the nation in scoring while earning All-South soccer team honors.

MARIO LONE Mario Lone, inducted in 2006, won four letters in men’s soccer at GW between 1988-91 and is the University’s career leader in points (117) and goals (50) and is tied for seventh in assists (17). He also owns the single-season mark for most points (46 in 1989) and shares the record for most goals in a season (19; 1989). A native of Guatemala City, Guatemala, Lone earned numerous honors from the Atlantic 10 Conference during his productive athletic career, including Player of the Year in 1989 and 1991, A-10 Rookie of the Year in 1988, and first-team All-Conference in both 1990 and 1991.

MARCELO VALENCIA Inducted in 2008, Marcelo Valencia earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors in each of his four seasons (1991-94) and is the only player in GW soccer history to notch more than 25 goals and assists in a career. As a sophomore in 1992, he was named A-10 Player of the Year and earned NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region first-team honors. Statistically, Valencia ranks third on the Colonials’ career points list with 94, second with 40 assists and seventh with 27 goals. Following graduation in 1995, he played professional soccer for five seasons for the Washington Warthogs (CISL), Philadelphia Kixx (NPSL), Hershey Wildcats (A-Lg.) and Baltimore Blast (NPSL).

The George Washington University Athletic Hall of Fame accepts nominations annually. G W A N D WA S H I N G T O N , D C GW: SOMETHING HAPPENS HERE The exceptional opportunities, resources, and experiences of The George Washington University await you — in the classroom, on campus and in the city. As an institution of higher learning and academic research, we have the “added attributes” of offering students an academic and social life in the world-class city of Washington, DC. As a result, we attract an exciting mix of students and faculty to GW. We create and support a unique, fun and competitive atmosphere for talented students and faculty from across the globe. We are able to capitalize on the energy and excitement of a national and international city and match it to the opportunities we offer on our campus and in our classrooms. Washington is perhaps the most livable major city in the country. With more than 40 colleges and universities and nearly 400,000 students, student life is a major aspect of the nation’s capital. GW’s two DC campuses are perfectly situated to make the most of that student life scene. Our Foggy Bottom Campus has well-defined and recognizable gateways and our Mount Vernon Campus offers a green suburban oasis. GW prides itself on the nearly seamless fit between both campuses and the city. But living here also means living in a “luxe” GW residence hall according to MSNBC. Under the expert care of GW Housing Programs, about 8,000 students live in the University’s 32 residence halls, 26 situated in Foggy Bottom and six on our Mount Vernon Campus. GW has multiple Living and Learning Cohorts that are available for students interested in the performing arts, foreign languages, world cultures, healthy living, politics and business leadership, among others. Our residence halls offer data, voice and cable TV connectivity. Since GW recognizes the connections between a sound body and mind, the Lerner Health and Wellness Center is a showcase of fitness and wellness opportunities. With its 100-station cardio-exercise area, free weights, indoor track, squash and racquetball courts, and 25-yard lap indoor pool, GW enhances the quality of student life and supports students’ interests in intramural sports, club sports and other recreational and wellness activities. GW students also have the opportunity to take “The Vern Express” to Mount Vernon for more recreational fun on

our NCAA regulation softball, soccer, and lacrosse fields as well as enjoy our outdoor pool and tennis facilities, superb outdoor intramural and recreational facilities, and a low-ropes outdoor challenge course. When it comes to dining, GW’s own J Street, WOW Wingery, Ivory Tower, Gelman Library Starbucks and Ames Dining Room are where you’ll find convenient campus meals. Combined they offer vegetarian and kosher options, as well as hot meals, grabn-go, all you care to eat, brand favorites, salads, specialty coffee, groceries, and other specialty food and ethnic meal choices. You can dine on campus and in the city by using our declining balance and flexible spending program known as Colonial Cash, which is managed online and administered through our GWorld card program. Colonial Cash can also be used for a variety of retail, convenience, beauty, mail and residence hall laundry services, and GW Bookstore purchases. GW student life is also about honoring school traditions and starting new ones. In addition to more than 350 student-run organizations, the Student Activities Center, based in the Marvin Center, offers programming to educate and excite students throughout the year, from Midnight Breakfast to Stress Free Zone. Other programs include AIDS Awareness Week, International Week, Welcome Week and Greek Week. School spirit and Colonials varsity athletics are a huge part of GW student life. If you include the 22 NCAA Division I GW sports teams and the 50 club and intramural teams with the local professional sport attractions including the Capitals, Redskins, Nationals, Mystics, United and Wizards, you will find a city full of collegiate and professional sports enthusiasts. So, you can see why we proudly say, Something Happens Here in the Classroom, Campus and City. www.GWsports.com

Architectural concept rendering of the renovated Charles E. Smith Center, the home of George Washington Athletics.

CHARLES E. SMITH CENTER Charles E. Smith Center has served as the Department of Athletics and Recreation’s home since 1975. A three-level building covering nearly an entire city block, Smith Center serves the University as well as the neighboring Foggy Bottom community. Due to the recent magnanimous gift by the Robert H. Smith and Charles E. Smith Family Foundations and the Robert P. and Arlene R. Kogod families, Charles E. Smith Center is in the midst of a major threephase, three-year multi-million dollar renovation. The interior upgrades will feature an academic center for studentathletes, improved general admission and club seating in the basketball arena, new locker rooms, remodeled office space to centralize athletic operations including those currently located elsewhere on campus, enhanced athletic training and weight room facilities, and a renovated natatorium (pool area). The exterior concepts include a dynamic new main entrance along 22nd Street, which will present a revitalized box office and concession concourse, and a new VIP entrance along F Street. The project is consistent with the 2007 Foggy Bottom Campus Plan and reinforces 22nd Street as the core of the campus. The renovation project is expected to be completed by early 2011, during which time the building will remain open without interruption of planned events. Located at 600 22nd Street, NW, the main arena of Smith Center seats 5,000 spectators and is the home of GW volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and gymnastics. Also, many special events are held in Smith Center, including annual commencement ceremonies for several of GW’s schools, as well as musical and comedic performances. Recent appearances have been made by Billy Crystal, Ray Charles, the Beach Boys, Bill Cosby, Jerry Seinfeld and Robin Williams. In addition to the main arena, the facility includes two auxiliary gymnasiums, which are used for gymnastics and baseball practice as well as basketball, volleyball, badminton, indoor soccer and many other activities. The facility includes an eight-lane, 25-yard pool, which is also the home of the Colonials swimming and water polo teams. The pool features an aquatics scoreboard manufactured by Colorado Time Systems with an eight-lane display as well as a new records board, both installed in 2004. In addition to recreational swimming, the pool is used for scuba diving classes. In 1995, both upper baseline seating areas were renovated and feature chair-back seating. The arena has hosted a USA vs. Cuba volleyball match and the USA women’s basketball national team. Smith Center underwent a multi-phase renovation in 1996 to further accommodate the needs of GW athletics and special events. The renovations allowed for an expanded fitness center, more space and larger locker rooms for varsity athletics. Smith Center features a scoreboard system installed in September 2004. The state-of-the-art BARCO system includes a center-hung scoreboard with four high-resolution video screens, two auxiliary scoreboards, two LED displays as well as basketball shot clocks, locker room clocks and time-of-day clocks. September 2005, the lower season ticket holders section was renovated with new chairback seating.

LERNER HEALTH & WELLNESS CENTER Opened on Aug. 29, 2001, the four-level, multi-million dollar Lerner Health & Wellness Center across 23rd Street from Smith Center affords students a state-of-the-art recreational facility. The building houses four basketball courts; four racquetball courts; six international squash courts; free weights and cardio equipment; a jogging track; a three-lane, 25-yard lap pool; locker rooms; steam and sauna rooms; Recreational Sports offices and meeting rooms, as well as underground parking for 110 vehicles. For individual fitness, aerobics classes are held as well as clinics ranging from weight training to therapeutic massage techniques. Exercise bikes and a running track circling the upper level are available as are free weights and Lifefitness weight machines for circuit training.

MOUNT VERNON ATHLETICS FACILITY The GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Facility is home to Colonials soccer, lacrosse, tennis and softball. The facility includes a synthetic turf field for soccer and lacrosse, a softball diamond, a six-lane, 25-yard outdoor pool, 11 hard courts for tennis and a small gymnasium. The facility also includes newly-renovated coaches offices, locker rooms and support areas for these teams.

ACADEMIC SUPPOR T SER VICES The GW Department of Athletics employs five full-time academic support staff members, 30-40 tutors to help 400-plus student-athletes. Because of the unique challenges created by the transition to both college academic and athletic competition, the academic coordinators — along with student-athlete peers — provide ’Welcome’ activities for freshmen as well as other opportunities to discuss issues such as time management, campus resources, study strategies and adjustment to the college experience.
